Arizona was combined with New Mexico until 1863. There were no Putmans or Putnams listed.

 

 

ARIZONA 1870 TERRITORIAL CENSUS

 

C. (CHARLES) C. PUTMAN  Prescott, Yavapai County

He is 24 MA and boarding. He is a printer. He should be Charles C. Putnam, son of Stephen Putnam (2061) and Augusta Sargent from Boston, Mass. He is also listed with his folks in San Francisco where they have been since the early 1850s. He is also listed there as a printer as he is back there.

The listing is 26 OH OH OH.

 

C. I. (CHARLES ISRAEL) PUTNAM  Silver King, Pinal County

He is 28 IL and an engineer, probably mining variety. He is Charles Israel Putnam, a son of Warner Herkimer Putnam and Mary McGaffee. He was actually born in Dorchester, Ontario and was shown with his folks in the 1851 Canadian Census right after he was born. He was in Dayton, Michigan in 1870 living with his uncle and aunt.

 

CHARLES D. PUTNAM  District 9, Pinal County

He is a cattle rancher. Charles Duncomb Putnam is 53 CAN VT NY, Martha E. Reed is 33 SC SC SC, Charles L. (actually Leland Sanford) 2 CAN, Lucy 1 AZ. Then there are two stepchildren, John 12 GA SC SC and William 10 GA SC SC. They seem to have taken the Putnam name as no other was listed. The marriage record reads C. D. Putman and Mattie Holman November 14, 1876. Martha was previously married to a Holman and the two older kids are from that marriage. He was in Tulare County, California with his first wife Delphina in 1860. His brother Isaac is with him. There is another brother, Warner Herkimer Putnam, in the area and is listed shortly under William Putnam. All three are sons of William Putnam (#1141) and Eleanor Dygert of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. He will die June 9, 1888, and Martha will be widowed in Los Angeles in 1900.

 

ISAAC PUTNAM  District 9, Pinal County

Isaac Dygert Putnam is 48 CAN VT NY and living with his older brother Charles. These are two sons of William Putnam and Eleanor Dygert of Windsor Canada. See pages 410-411 of Eben Putnam's book for more on this family. Isaac will marry Lucy Jennie Read of Augusta, Georgia here in 1881. In 1900, they will be in Augusta, Georgia.

 

W. H. (WARNER HERKIMER) PUTNAM  Florence, Pinal County

He is 58 CAN VT VT and a wheelwright. He is the third brother, Warner Herkimer Putnam of Windsor, Ontario. He was married to Mary McGaffee back in Canada. He will die here in 1892.

CHARLES F. (FRANKLIN)  PUTNAM  Pleasant Valley, Gila County

He is 64 MA MA MA and a farmer. Nora L. his wife of 17 years is 36 IA and they have Israel 14 AZ. Charles was born in Groton, Mass, a son of Osgood Putnam (2122) and Rhoda Ann Hall. Charles left home in the late 1850s, and was in Lavensworth, Minnesota in 1860. He joined the Union Army in Minnesota in 1861, and then moved to Arizona in the early 1880s. Nora is widowed with the kids in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1910 through 1930.

 

H. (HENRY) B. PUTNAM  Globe Town, Gila County

He is 47 IL VT NY and single. He is a conductor on the railroad. He looks to be the son of Henry B. and Pauline Putnam from Rockford, Winnebago County, Illinois.

 

JOHN J. (JOSEPH) PUTNAM  Ranges 19-25, Graham County

John is 40 VA WVA WVA and listed as married, but is widowed. He is John Joseph Putman from Gilmer County, West Virginia, a son of James Putman and his first wife Mattie Lewis. He has been widowed twice now. The kids listed next are his and will be with him in 1910 through 1930 in Mohave County.

 

JOHN & THOMAS PUTNAM  Ranges 19-25, Graham County

John J. Junior is 6 NM ?? TX and Thomas J. is 5 AZ ?? TX. They live with their grandparents Andrew and Martha Lewis from Texas.

 

JOHN & SAM PUTNAM  Phoenix, Maricopa County

John is 28 TX IN MS, Sam is 19 AR IN MS. They live with their mother Suraney 45 MS and her husband of 2 years Henry Armen 56 MO.

 

HAROLD PUTNAM  Range 10, Pinal County

He is 27 MA MA MA single and boarding. He is a clerk. He looks to be the son of John Howard Putnam and Antoinette Parsons from Revere, Mass. He was 7 there in 1880. His folks are moving to Los Angeles soon and he will be there with them in 1910 and single there in 1920 and 1930.

 

EDWARD E. (EVERETT) PUTNAM  Pct. 5, Pinal County

He is 38 CAN CAN CAN and a merchant. He has been married 7 years to Emma Finch 35 CA. They were married here April 16, 1893. She has a child from her first marriage, Scott Whitlock 13 AZ. He is a son of Warner Herkimer Putnam. He was here in the 1870s on, and they will be in 1920.

 

L. R. ( LLOYD RAYMOND) PUTMAN  Congress, Yavapai County

He is 18 OR OR PA and single. He is a miner. He will marry Elizabeth Ann Prout August 30, 1902, and be here in 1910. He is a son of Charles Frederick Putnam and Elizabeth Hutchinson. He was born December 11, 1882. He was at home in 1900 in Redlands, San Bernardino County, California, and they will be right here in 1920 and then in California by 1930.

 

MARION PUTMAN  Chapparal, Yavapai County

He is 36 TX KY KY and single or divorced. He is currently a prospector. He is a son of John Washington Putman of Llano County, Texas and a grandson of Madison DeKalb Putman, Sr. I never find him with a wife, so no name there. He will be here running a boarding house through 1930. He will die prospecting for gold near Blythe, California in 1939.

 

 

ARIZONA 1910 CENSUS

 

HENRY R. PUTNAM  Wilcox Pct, Chochise County

He is 51 WI NY NY, and is alone. He looks to be the son of Harrison and Christina Putnam as shown in 1860 in Houghton, Michigan in 1860 and Winnebago County, Wisconsin in 1870. His folks were from Essex County, New York and Vermont before that.

 

A. J. (ANDREW JACKSON) PUTMAN  Globe, Gila County

He is 35 TX US AR, His wife Jonnie is 35 TX TX TX. He would be a son of John Putman and Sarah McCausland as shown at home in 1880 in Shakleford County, Texas. He will die here in Pinal County January 18, 1918. The death certificate says he was divorced at the time.

 

BELL L. PUTMAN  Globe, Gila County

She is 23 TX TX TX and a servant with Charles Davis. She is Lula Bell Putman, sister to the above Andrew Putman.

 

JOHN P. PUTNAM  Phoenix, Maricopa County

He is 36 TX TX TX, his wife Marguerite is 33 CO. They live with her mother Mary Bradshaw or Brashear 52 MO.

 

JOHN PUTMAN  Cerbat, Mohave County

He is 53 WV and widowed. His kids are James 18 NM WV TX, John Junior 15 AZ, George W. 10 AZ. He is John Joseph Putman from Gilmer County, West Virginia, a son of James Putman and his first wife Louvinia Stull. He is here still in 1920.

He is 48 CAN, Emily E. Finch 46 CA. He is a son of Warner Herkimer Putnam. He was here in the 1870s on, and they will be in 1920.

 

LLOYD PUTNAM  No Twsp listed, Pinal County

He is 28 OR OR PA, Elizabeth Ann Prout 26 NV, Florence 4 AZ, Georgia 2 CA, and Mabel 0 AZ. He is an engineer. He is a son of Charles Frederick Putnam and Elizabeth Hutchinson. He was at home in 1900 in Redlands, San Bernardino County, California, and they will be right here in 1920 with more kids. He married Elizabeth August 30, 1902.

 

M. D. (MARION DANIEL) PUTMAN  Prescott, Yavapai County

He is 46 TX KY TX. He lives in a boarding house. He is a son of John Washington Putman of Llano County, Texas and a grandson of Madison DeKalb Putman, Sr. He was single or divorced here in 1900. I never find him with a wife, so no name there. He will be here through 1930, and die prospecting for gold near Blythe, California in 1939.

EDWARD A. PUTNAM  Bisbee, Cochise County

He is 55 NY, Medie K. 53 NY. He is a secretary in the local YMCA.

 

WILLIAM M. PUTMAN  Spring Valley, Coconimo County

He is 26 TX, Irene 20 TX. He is probably a son of Virgil Putman as shown in 1900 in Hunt County, Texas. He is also listed with them now in Fannin County, Texas. Probably a dual listing.

 

FLORENCE V. PUTMAN  Phoenix, Maricopa County

She is 58 OH and has two laborers/boarders.

 

MARY ANN PUTMAN  Alkire, Maricopa County

She is 54 MN. Also there is her brother W. R. Campbell 55 MN and his wife Barbara 54 WI. Mary Ann was married to Delos Putman from Ohio. They were in Miner County South Dakota in 1900 and 1910.

 

O. E. PUTMON  Phoenix, Maricopa County

He is 48 IL PA NJ, Amanda his wife is 46 IL IL IL and they have Edwin 14 IL IL IL. The listing is indexed as Eastman/Putman so not sure who he is or if he is a Putman or not.

 

PINK PUTNAM  Phoenix, Maricopa County

She is 35 TX MS TX, and living with her sister Julia Bates 47 TX MS TX. She is listed as being divorced.

 

SILAS R. (ROSS) PUTNAM  Chandler, Maricopa County

He is 23 KS living alone. He is a son of Silas O. Putnam and was with the family in 1900 in Leavenworth County, Kansas. He is a grandson of Silas R. Putnam from Vermont. He will be married soon and they are in San Diego in 1930.

 

JOHN J. PUTNAM  Whitney, Mohave County

He is John Joseph Putman from Gilmer County, West Virginia, a son of James Putman and his first wife Louvinia Stull. He is 69 WV, his son George Wesley is 19 AZ. George is a son of his second marriage. George was born in 1900 and will die here in 1945. George will soon marry Maggie Jane Crabtree. John ran away from home at age 12, headed west and became a marshal in several small towns out here. He was twice married, but basically raised three sons by himself. The third son, Thomas, is listed later. John was born November 25, 1850 and will die November 2, 1932 and be buried here.

 

OTHEAL D. PUTNAM  Trout Creek, Mohave County

She is 6 VT and the granddaughter of Annie Williams.

 

THOMAS J. (JEFFERSON) PUTNAM  Bland, Mohave County

He is 26 NM and boarding. He is a son of the John Putnam in this county. He will soon marry Minnie Gray.

 

WILLIE PUTMAN  Casa Grande, Pinal County

Willie is 28 TX TX TX and his son Cecil is 6 TX TX TX. They are rooming with another two families. He is a son of Virgil Putman from Hunt County, Texas, grandchild of Lorenzo Putman from Mississippi.

 

JOHN PUTTMAN  Casa Grande, Pinal County

He is 25 AZ and living alone. He is a son of John Joseph Putman (now in Mohave County). He will be in Mohave County again in 1930. At that time he says he is divorced, so he’ll get married and unmarried in the next several years.

 

EVERETT E. (EDWARD) PUTNAM  Mammoth, Pinal County

He is 58 CAN, Emma E. (Emily Finch) 55 CA. He is a son of Warner Herkimer Putnam. He was here in the 1870s on.

 

GEORGE F. PUTNAM  Summerland, Pinal County

He is 60 IA and living alone. He is the son of Thomas Howard Putnam and Hannah Farley as shown in 1860 in Lee County, Iowa. Folks moved to California in the 1870s. I lose George after 1880. He lives 2 doors away from his brother Mark Putnam.

 

MARK PUTNAM  Summerland, Pinal County

He is listed as Mick, but is the son of Thomas Howard Putman (note different spellings) and was with that family in 1900 in Los Angeles, California. Mark is 58 CA IA IA (was NV in 1900), Mary E. 51 CA.

 

TILDEN J. PUTNAM  Summerland, Pinal County

He is 31 CA and his wife Anna 25 OH. He is a son of the Mark Putnam listed earlier and was with the family in 1900 in Los Angeles. He was born in California February 17, 1888. He lives next door his dad, or probably in the same house.

 

LLOYD (RAYMOND) PUTNAM  Superior, Pinal County

He is 38 OR, Elizabeth Ann Prout his wife 35 NV, Florence 14 AZ, Georgiann 12 CA, Mabel Elizabeth 10 AZ, Elsie Ruby 8 AZ, Charles Robert 6 AZ, Cannon (Luther Kenneth) 5 AZ, Mildred Eileen 4 yrs 5 mos AZ, Arthur Eugene 2 yrs 6 mos AZ and Francis Raymond 7 mos AZ. And there will be one more son, Warren Harding, born in 1921. Whew! He is a son of Charles Frederick Putnam and Elizabeth Hutchinson. He was at home in 1900 in Redlands, San Bernardino County, California. They were here in Arizona in the 1910 census. He will be widowed by 1922, and he and the kids will be in Los Angeles County California by 1930.

 

DAVID F. (FRANKLIN) PUTNAM  Patagonia, Santa Cruz County

He is 59 TX AL TX, Magdalene Mendival 26 MEX MEX MEX, and Rita Cordelia 5/12 AZ. He is a son of Madison DeKalb Putman Jr. and Louisa Casner from Llano County Texas and then San Diego County California by 1868. David was born in Texas January 15, 1876. He has been here and in New Mexico for a while. He will have another wife Lena and more kids and be in San Diego County by 1930 and will die there in 1931. Southern Putman family from Alabama and South Carolina and Virginia before that.

 

CHARLES O. PUTNAM  Sonoita, Santa Cruz County

He is 51 MA, Julia Frances Babcock his wife is 46 MA and Kenneth H. 11 MA. He is Charles Otis Putnam, the son of Herbert E. Putnam, son of Charles (3118) from Marlborough, Mass. They were in Marlborough in 1900 and 1910.

 

FRED L. PUTNAM  Sonoita , Santa Cruz County

Fred is 58 MA, Carrie Augusta Hall, his wife, 54 MA, Dorothy 19 MA. He is a son of Charles and Catherine Putnam of Marlborough, Mass. They were in Medford, Massachusetts in the 1900, and Pasadena, California in 1910. Carrie will die here shortly on August 16, 1920.

 

MARION D. (DANIEL) PUTMAN  Prescott, Yanapai County

He is 57 TX and living alone. He is a son of John Washington Putman of Llano County, Texas and a grandson of Madison DeKalb Putman, Sr. He has been here since the 1890s, and is here in 1930.

 

CORRIDON H. PUTMAN  Bonse, Yuma County

He is 54 NV, Maria A. 37 MI. He is a son of William and Lois Putman from Illinois. They were in Carson City, Nevada in 1870 and 1880. He was in Santa Clara County, California in the 1900 census.

 

 

ARIZONA 1930 CENSUS

 

FRANK M. (MARION) PUTNAM  Los Olivos, Maricopa County

He is 55 SD NY NY and a finisher in a furniture store. Stella May Jones his wife is 58 SD and they have Ruth Ellen 29 SD, Harriet L. 27 SD, and Corlis J. 24 SD. His unmarried sister Mary 75 MI is with them. He is a son of Bela Putnam and Frances Robbins. He was born in Turner County, South Dakota and was just married there in 1900. In 1910 and 1920 they are in Riverside, Montrose County, Colorado. Stella will die here November 30, 1935 and he will be around till he dies December 22, 1945.

 

MARION L. PUTNAM  Osborn, Maricopa County

He is 27 MI MI IN and married to Gertrude W. who is 25 IL. He is unemployed. Marion is a son of Perry Putman from Jackson County, Michigan. His mother Ina was from Indiana. The family was in Steuben, Indiana in 1910, and he was back in Branch County, Michigan in 1920 with his widowed mother,

 

JOHN PUTNAM  Oatman, Mohave County

He is 35 AZ WV TX and divorced. He is boarding. He is John Putman Junior, and a brother of the following Thomas. He was single in 1910, and single in 1920 in Pinal County. So he must have married and then divorced in the last 9 years. He will marry a Mary Myrtle soon. She was born July 5, 1910 and will die here in July 1983. John Junior was born February 14, 1895 and died January 8, 1971.

 

THOMAS J. (JEFFERSON) PUTMAN  Oatman, Mohave County

He is 37 NM US US and is an field engineer in a gold mine. Minnie E. Gray his wife is 27 MEX. They have Thomas G. (Gray) 7 AZ and Mervin N. (Nellis) 1 AZ. He is a son of John Joseph Putman. His dad was from Gilmer County, West Virginia. They were all here in the County in 1920. He married Minnie here in 1922. Thomas was born in 1893 and will die here in 1962. Minnie was born in 1902 and will die here in 1951. They will move to Silver City, New Mexico in 1945. Southern Putman Family from Virginia. The son Mervin was born March 15 1929 and will die August 7, 2007 and be buried in the Fort Bayard National Cemetery in New Mexico. He married Mary Damacia Barela on December 21, 1957 in Grants, New Mexico. Mary died in 1992 and he married a high school sweetheart Betty (Kimmick) Hunt in Silver City, New Mexico June 26, 1999.

 

JOHN J. (JOSEPH) PUTNAM  Whitney, Mohave County

He is still here at age 79 VA. Still runs his farm too. He is John Joseph Putman from Gilmer County, West Virginia, a son of James Putman and his first wife Louvinia Stull. Southern family originally from Fauquier County, Virginia. John ran away from home at age 12, headed west and became a marshal in several small towns out here. He was twice married, but basically raised three sons by himself. He will die here November 2, 1932, and be buried in Kingman, Arizona.

 

FRED L. PUTNAM  Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz County

He is now 69 MA MA MA and still raises chickens. His first wife Carrie Augusta Hall died here August 16, 1920. He has a new young wife Anna B. 40 IL. This is her second marriage as well. He is a son of Charles and Catherine Putnam of Marlborough, Mass. They were in Medford, Massachusetts in the 1900, and Pasadena, California in 1910. He and Carrie were here in Sonita, Santa Cruz County in 1920.

 

CHARLES O. (OTIS) PUTNAM  Sonoita, Santa Cruz County

He is 61 MA MA MA and widowed. He is a rancher. His son Kenneth is 22 MA MA MA. He is Charles Otis Putnam, the son of Herbert E. Putnam, son of Charles Putnam (3118) from Marlborough, Mass. They were in Marlborough in 1900 and 1910. He was here in 1920 and his wife Julia Frances Babcock was alive and with them then.

 

DAVID PUTMAN  Prescott, Yavapai County

He is 63 OR IL MO and retired it seems. Lettie A. Powell his wife is 56 OR. He is a son of John Harrison Putman and Naomi Alberta Tower from Linn County, Oregon. He had just married Lettie in 1911 and was with her in Lane County, Oregon in 1920. He was a veterinarian back in Oregon. Southern Putman family out of Illinois.

 

MARION D. PUTMAN  Prescott, Yavapai County

He is 67 TX KY TX and now widowed. He is a landlord of a rooming house. He is a son of John Washington Putman of Llano County, Texas and a grandson of Madison DeKalb Putman, Sr. He was single or divorced here in 1900. I never find him with a wife, so no name there. He will die prospecting for gold near Blythe, California in 1939.

 

BERWIL C. PUTMAN  Prescott, Yavapai County

He is 22 LA SD LA and single. He is a letter carrier for the Post Office. He is a son of Wilbur Putman and Mattie Rose Crawford. He was born there November 14, 1907. He was at home in Louisiana in St. Landry Parish in 1910 and in Lake Charles in 1920. He will marry Madge Habersatt and be in Phoenix till he dies December 22, 1990. Dutch family that goes back to Herkimer County New York.
