ARKANSAS
CENSUS
REPORTS
1830
- 1930
UPDATED NOVEMBER 20,
2011
Arkansas
was included in the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 and settlers first began coming
into the area. Much land was opened up as bounty
lands for service in the War of 1812 and many more people, including many
Putmans, took advantage of the low land prices to settle in the area. Arkansas
was separated from Missouri and became a Territory in 1819. It then included
all of Oklahoma. On June 15, 1836 Arkansas became the 25th state. It seceded from
the Union in 1861 and was readmitted in 1868.
The
following is a listing of Putman and Putnam families that are found in the
Arkansas Census Reports from 1830 to 1920. There was no census taken prior to
1830 and that was a territorial one, the first Federal State census was taken
in 1840.
In
the 1830 and 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10-14,
15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc. From 1850 on names, ages and states of
birth are shown.
ARKANSAS
1830 CENSUS
In
1830 there was only one Putman/Putnam family listed. That was:
SAMUEL PUTNAM Crawford County
He is
from the New England branch. He is a son of Nathan Putnam and Dorothy Whitney
from Sudbury, Massachusetts. Samuel was born in Sudbury on June 19, 1781. He
married Mary Whitman there on August 15, 1806. He served in the War of 1812 in
Washington County New York. He then seems to have moved with his father,
Nathan, to Lexington, Kentucky right after the War, and then was in Missouri
(of which Arkansas was a part then) around 1814-1816 and in 1819 was given a
land grant in Arkansas for his service in the 1812 fighting. He arrived in
Arkansas in 1819 while it was just a territory, but was there earlier (the
1814-16 date). It is stated that he was in Missouri, but prior to 1819 all of
Arkansas was Arkansas County Missouri. Samuel and Mary will remain near Fort
Smith for the rest of their lives. Mary Whitman Putnam died there in 1846 and
Samuel Putnam died there in 1847. His line goes back Samuel > Nathan >
John > Samuel > John > Nathaniel > John Putnam from England.
ARKANSAS
1840 CENSUS
In
the 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10-14, 15-19,
20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.
SAMUEL PUTNAM Upper Township, Crawford County
The
various state tax lists from 1830 to 1840 indicated both a Samuel junior and a
Samuel Senior, living in Upper Township. Sam junior died in 1837, Sam Senior
will die in 1847. This listing is 01110001 – 0020001. Their kids will be
here in 1850.
REDING PUTMAN Prairie Township, Washington County
The
listing is 0111001 – 000000011. He’s my great great grandfather. Reading
was born in South Carolina on April 20, 1792. He was a son of Daniel Putman and
Prudence Skelton. The older woman is his mother Prudence. He moved with the
family to Kentucky, and then Indiana where his dad died in 1816. He married
Stacy Combs and moved to Illinois. He fought in the Black Hawk War there, and
got ‘Bounty Lands’ in Arkansas for his service. Stacy died in 1827. He then
married a widow, Phebe Marsh Stelle, in 1829. She is with him now. They first
appeared in the 1837 tax list along with his brother William, but were here
about 1836. Reding will be here till he dies in 1865. Phebe will hang in till
1884 when she is 84 years old. This line goes back Reding > Daniel >
Barnet > Thomas > Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas >Thomas Putnam
from England.
WILLIAM PUTMAN West Fork Township, Washington County
The
listing is 2121101 – 0011001. Reding's older brother William and his
family. William was born in Anderson, South Carolina March 15, 1796. He married
Alla Bridges in Gibson County Indiana in 1817. They went to Illinois in 1823
with Reding and then down here in 1836. He is a school teacher as he was in
Illinois and Indiana. William will die here June 16, 1862. Alla will go with a
daughter to Indiana and then to Kansas where she will die August 12, 1887. This
line is the same as Reding’s.
ARKANSAS
1850 CENSUS
JOHN PUTNAM Upper Township, Crawford County
John
Whitman Putnam is listed as 30 years old, born in Missouri (in what is now
Arkansas, but was in Missouri then). John is a son of Samuel Putnam and Mary
Whitman from here and Massachusetts before that. Also here is his brother
Nathan 25 AR, Mary Oliphant 14 AR (daughter of his sister Caroline Oliphant),
Susan Richardson 28 AR (his widowed sister), and the following Richardson kids,
James 12 AR, Sarah 10 AR, Henry 8 AR, Jonah 6 AR, David 3 AR, and a son 6
months. There is Elizabeth McDonald 34 KY and three kids: Samuel 13 AR, John 11
AR and Lucy 8/12 AR. Elizabeth McDonald is another of John’s sisters. She
married Alan McDonald. Then, shortly John will marry Elizabeth Gould
Richardson, and they are here in 1860. He will die in 1862 and Elizabeth will
marry for the third time and be here with some kids and her husband August
Smith.
EMILY PUTNAM Upper Township, Crawford County
There
is a blank line above Emily's name. Nathan should have been listed here and not
above with his brother. Emily Meeks was his wife. Emily 17 MO, William T. 5
months AR, Safron Oliphant 8 AR (niece) and two laborers William Walker and
William Hazen both from KY. Nathan is John's brother. Nathan and Emily will be
heading out to California soon, and be in Los Angeles in the 1852 State Census.
They will remain there. Then in the next listing is a Barrington family. Jane
Barrington is another child of Samuel Putnam and Mary Whitman. The listing is
James C. Barrington 23 KY, Jane 35 KY and she has 5 Thayer kids from her first
marriage to Benjamin Thayer, Margaret 15 AR, Mary 13 AR, John W. 9 AR, Nathan 7
AR and Susan F. 4 TX.
NANCY PUTMAN Mulberry Township, Franklin County
Nancy
is listed as 43 born in KY. With her is a group of children: John 16 AR, Mary
J. 14 AR, Jasper H. 11 AR, Ally F. 7 AR. All of the children are listed as
Bourlands and not Putmans. Also there is William Reeves 56. Franklin County
lies between Crawford and Johnson Counties. I do not know who her deceased
husband was. She will be here still in 1860 and Ally is then called a Putman,
and also here in 1870 and 1880. Nancy is Nancy Hardwick and she married John
Bacon Bourland in 1824 and he died in 1840. She must have married a Putman or
Putnam after that as Alley was born after John died. Only really available one
in the area would have been Sam junior from Crawford County. He was around in
1840, but not in 1850. Best guess is that he was a second husband, except I
have him dying unmarried in 1837. She also went under the name Nancy Merriman
in the 1840s. Very confusing.
BERRY BARTON PUTMAN Horsehead
Township, Johnson County
Berry
is 30 GA, wife Martha Frances Tate his wife 25 GA, Adolphus 6 GA and Mary Ann 1
GA. Berry is a son of Thomas Putman and Mary Barton from the Pendleton District
in South Carolina. Thomas was a brother of my ggggrandfather Daniel. Both were
sons of Barnet and Sarah Putman. When Barnet and Daniel’s kids went to Kentucky
in 1804, Thomas went too, but then about 1817 moved to Hall County Georgia
where Berry was born in 1820. Barry married Martha Tate there November 28, 1843
and came here about 1848. They will be here a year or so, then move to Franklin
County Arkansas. They will stay there till 1856 and go to Grayson County Texas
for a year and return to Sebastian County Arkansas below Fort Smith and stay
there for the rest of their lives. His line is Berry >Thomas > Barnet
> Thomas > Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas Putnam of
Virginia and England before that.

Anderson, South Carolina March 15, 1796. He married Alla Bridges in Gibson
County Indiana in 1817. They went to Illinois in 1823 with Reding and then down
here in 1836. He is a school teacher as he was in Illinois and Indiana. William
will die here June 16, 1862. Alla will go with a daughter to Indiana and then
to Kansas where she will die August 12, 1887
REDING PUTMAN Prairie Township, Washington County
Reding
is listed in Prairie township as 58 SC, Phoebe Marsh Stelle 62 NC (should be
NJ) and Reding junior 20 IL. He’s my great great grandfather. Reading was born
in South Carolina on April 20, 1792. He was a son of Daniel Putman and Prudence
Skelton. The older woman is his mother Prudence. He moved with the family to
Kentucky, and then Indiana where his dad died in 1816. He married Stacy Combs
and moved to Illinois. He fought in the Black Hawk War there, and got ‘Bounty
Lands’ in Arkansas for his service. Stacy died in 1827. He then married a widow,
Phebe Marsh Stelle, in 1829. She is with him now. They first appeared in the
1837 tax list along with his brother William, but were here about 1836. Reding
will be here till he dies in 1865. Phebe will hang in till 1884 when she is 84
years old.

age 38 TN, with his wife Marinda Patterson 33 TN, John 8 AR, Sarah 7 AR,
Margaret 5 AR and Elviry 4 AR. This is James Pervine Putman born in Tennessee
January 8, 1822 to Jahu Putman and Rachel Bond. Jahu was a son of Joseph and
Millie Putman from South Carolina. He married Marinda January 8, 1845. They
were in Williamson County Tennessee in 1850 and here shortly afterwards.
Marinda will die here in 1863, and James will marry Mary Newcome in 1865. He
will be a State Legislator in the 1870s and die in Rogers, Arkansas July 31,
1882. This line is James > Jahu > Joseph > James > Zachariah >
Zachariah > Thomas >Thomas > Thomas Putnam from England.
JOHN B. (BOND) PUTMAN Prairie Grove Township, Benton County
He is
age 30 TN, wife Matilda Bond 27 TN, Mary 7 AR, John 3 AR, Lisett 1 AR. This is
John Bond Putman another of Jahu and Rachel's children. He was born March 18,
1829 in Tennessee and married Matilda Jane Bond in Wilson County on January 4,
1850. He came here with his brother James here around 1852. He will die in the
Civil War in 1862, and Matilda must have died in the 60s as well, as the kids
are all with her mother Martha Bond by the 1870.
GEORGE P. PUTMAN Prairie Grove Township, Benton County
Listed
in Prairie Grove with his brother John. He is 26 TN, wife Mary Caroline Brown
27 NC, William 6 AR. One more of Jahu's kids. He was born in Tennessee July 18,
1833. They will be here through the 1880, but not make it till 1900. They just
had the one son, William James Putman.
A. V. PUTMAN Monticello, Drew County
He is
20 GA a cabinet maker living with several other cabinet makers.
J. S. PUTMAN Ozark, Franklin County
Listed
in town of Ozark as a carpenter 30 TN, wife Sarah A. 22 IL, Francis 4 IL, Mary
J. 2 IL. Best guess is he is James L. Putnam who was with his mother Elizabeth
in Jefferson County Tennessee in 1850.
NANCY PUTMAN Pleasant Hill, Franklin County
Still
living in Pleasant Hill age 51 KY with her daughter Alley 16 AR. Alley is now
listed Putman. I believe that Nancy is Samuel Putman Junior's widow. Nancy is
Nancy Hardwick and she married John Bacon Bourland in 1824 and he died in 1840.
She must have married a Putman or Putnam after that as Alley was born after
John died.
JACOB PUTMAN Mountain Township, Pike County
Listed
as being 49 and widowed since his wife Sarah Johnson died back in Georgia in
1853. He has a son C. (Clinton) E. Putman 14, GA. This is the Jacob Putman who
was a son of Ezekiel Putman born in Hall County Georgia March 13, 1810. They
were in Walker County Georgia in 1840, and in DeKalb County Alabama in 1850. He
had a son Clinton E. age 4 and Richard age 1 then. He will die here before
1870. This line goes back Jacob > Ezekiel > Barnet > Thomas >
Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas Putnam.
J. R. (JACOB RICHARD)
PUTMAN Mountain Township, Pike
County
This
is Richard Jacob Putman. Living near his father Jacob Putman with the Patton
family. He is shown as 11 born in AL (should be GA). His mom Narcisa Patton 32
TN, Bradford 7 AL and Florence 3 AR. Jacob had a son Richard who would have
been 11 in 1860. Narcisa was the common law wife of sorts of Jacob Putman. She
is using her maiden name, because she probably was never married. Narcissa
later will refer to herself as the ‘widow of Jacob Putman’ in a document later
in this decade. Richard will be here living with another family in 1870.
E. C. (ELIJAH COVINGTON)
PUTMAN Pike County
This
is Elijah Covington Putman and his second wife Malinda White. He is 34 GA and a
blacksmith. She is 22 TN. There are no children listed. Kids do appear in the
1870 and 1880 census, all were born in AR. Elijah was married earlier back in
Georgia to Mary Ellen Dodd, and they had several children. It seems Elijah
abandoned them with their Dodd grandparents and took off to Arkansas on his
own. Those kids, John, Rebecca and Henrietta all are still in Georgia and never
will join up with Elijah again. Elijah is a son of Elias and Libby Putman who
was a son of Ezekiel Putman and Hannah Brazelton of Hall County Georgia. His
lineage is Elijah > Elias > Ezekiel > Barnet > Thomas >
Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas >Thomas Putnam.
BERRY BARTON PUTMAN Bate Township, Sebastian County
He
appears again with Martha and some new kids. He was in Johnson County in 1850.
Berry is 40 GA, Martha Tate, his wife, 33 GA, (Thomas) Adolphus 15 GA, Mary 11

AL, Jane 14 AR, Mary 13 AR, Susan 7 AR, Sarah 4 AR, Lucy 3 AR and John 2 AR. He
was here in 1850, but it was part of Crawford County at that time. John is a
son of Samuel Putnam and Mary Whitman from here and Massachusetts before that.
He has married Elizabeth Gould who was previously married to a Robertson. The
two older kids are hers and are Richardsons. The three young ones are Putnams.
John will die in 1862, and his Elizabeth will remarry to August Smith and be
here with the three kids in 1870.

in Greenville, Saline township and is 36 AL. His wife Henrietta A. Turrentine

she dies in 1909 at age 96.

is the widow of William Putman, another son of John and Lucy Putman. She is 24
AL and living in the next house as head of the household. Living with her are a
woman M. L. Turrentine 22 AL, Harrison Turrentine 19 AL, Oscar Love 26 and
probably his wife Catherine Love 21 SC, William Love 32 VA and brother T. R.
Love 24 VA. Sarah is probably a Turrentine as well. William was born in Morgan
County Alabama in 1824, and probably died shortly after arriving here.
REDING PUTMAN Fayetteville, Washington County
Reding
senior 66 SC, his second wife Phebe Marsh Stelle 69 NJ and a cousin Jane Stelle
15 AR. When the Civil War began, Reding was supportive of the Union that he had
fought for so many times in the past. As a result, Rebels burned his house to
the ground in 1862, and Reding and Phebe moved to their son’s home in
Fayetteville. He will die there at age 73 on September 9, 1865. Phebe will be
there till she dies in 1884. Also in the house is Wilson Risley 25 AR and Mary
his wife 23 TN. Now Wilson was a
son of John Risley and Delilah Putman who was Reding Senior’s daughter.
Wilson’s wife is Tennessee Reed who is the sister of Reding Junior’s wife
Elizabeth Reed. Families got along okay.
REDING PUTMAN (JR.) Fayetteville, Washington County
Young
Reding is 29 IL, his wife Elizabeth Reed 24 TN, Ann 4 AR, Robert 2 AR and Mary
1 AR are living next door to his father. Also there is David Evans 11 AR who I
have no clues about. Reding Putman Jr. was born on September 12, 1830 in Putman
Township, Fulton County Illinois. On May 10, 1855, Reding married Elizabeth Reed
in Prairie Township, Washington County. Elizabeth and her family had moved
there from Georgia three years earlier. Elizabeth was the daughter of Robert
Reed and Elizabeth Fagala. She was born south of Knoxville, Tennessee in Sevier
County on June 14, 1835. Reding junior is now a physician in Fayetteville. They
will be here all their lives.
WILLIAM PUTMAN West Fork, Washington County
Reding's
brother William 65 SC, Alla Bridges 59 SC, and children Joseph 20 AR and
Prudence 17 AR. His children William, Calvin, Hazeal and Elizabeth had married
and moved on by 1860. William was born in Anderson, South Carolina March 15,
1796. He married Alla Bridges in Gibson County Indiana in 1817. They went to
Illinois in 1823 with Reding and then down here in 1836. He is a schoolteacher
as he was in Illinois and Indiana. William will die here June 16, 1862. Alla
will go with a daughter to Indiana and then to Kansas where she will die August
12, 1887.
(DANIEL) THOMAS PUTMAN West Fork, Washington County
This
is William and Alla's eldest son, Daniel Thomas Putman 41 IN and his wife
Rachel Musgrove 40 TN and their children Sarah 17, Thomas 14, Lucinda 10,
Malinda 7, Lavinia 4 and Emily 1. All the children were born in Arkansas.
WILLIAM PUTMAN Jackson, White County
William
is 32 SC, his wife Martha is 30 VA and Ann is 7 TN. He is a son of the Harriett
Putman found in Carroll County Tennessee in 1840 and 1850. His folks were
Solomon Putman and Harriett Woodson from Union County South Carolina. His wife
is Martha Overton. They were married in Carroll County Tennessee in November
1852. They are living in Jackson Township in the middle portion of Arkansas. I
do not find him in Arkansas in 1870. I assume he died in the Civil War like so
many others. This line goes back William > Solomon > John > Thomas
> Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas Putnam.
JAMES C. PUTMAN Dardanelle, Yell County
James
27 TN and wife Eleanor 25 TN. He will die in the very late1860s and Eleanor or
Eleanea will remarry to a Charles Lewis on December 19, 1869. In the 1870
listing will be his two children. The children appear through 1900. I am not
certain who he is or who his folks were. Then there is a marriage record of a
James Putman marring Catherine Harrison here August 8, 1867. And another of a
Mrs. M. C. Putman marrying David Farrell here November 5, 1876. So … maybe he
and Eleanea split and each grabbed another spouse before 1870. Just not sure.
WILLIAM J. (JAMES) PUTMAN Riley, Yell County
This
is the son of William and Allie Putman in Washington County. William 31 IL is shown with his wife
Lucinda Sims 32 IN and their children James W. 10 MO and Julia A. 10 MO. He was
living in Lawrence County Missouri in the 1850 census. I believe it is he that
is in Red River County Texas in 1870 with his son James.
ARKANSAS

another of Jahu Putman and Rachel Bond’s kids. He is 36 TN, wife Mary Caroline
Brown 37 NC and son William J. (James) 16 TN. George Putman was born July 18,
1833. He married Mary Caroline Brown on November 28, 1852. Mary was born in
North Carolina in 1832. They are here in 1880.
MARTHA BOND Osage, Benton County
Martha
60 NC is listed with three PUTMAN children, John 13 AR, Florence 10 AR and
Julia 8 AR. These are the children of John Bond Putman and his wife Matilda
Bond. John Bond Putman was born March 18, 1829. He married Matilda Jane Bond on
January 4, 1850. John had died 1862 and it seems that his wife had died in the
1860s as well. Martha is their grand mother.
MARY PUTMAN Lower Township, Franklin County
This
is Mary Freeman Putman, widow of Thomas Whitney Putman from Georgia. She is 35
GA with William 16 GA, Celestia 12 GA, Ella 10 GA and Thomas 7 GA. They are
living in Lower Township, Ozark, Arkansas. Thomas was a son of David Putman and
Lecy Castlebury from Hall County Georgia and a grandson of Thomas Putman and
Mary Barton from South Carolina and then Georgia. Thomas Whitney was born in
1831 in Cherokee County. He married Mary Freeman there on July 21, 1853. In the
1860 census he is listed as a merchant and they had two children. Thomas Putman
was killed in the Civil War in 1863. He served in Company C of the 1st Georgia
Cavalry. After Thomas died, Mary and the children moved to Arkansas. The kids
are all in Sebastian County near Fort Smith by 1880.
NANCY PUTMAN Mullberry, Franklin County
Still
here at age 62 TN (changes every year was AL, KY, TN). With her is Jesse Milton
4 AR, a grandchild. Nancy is Nancy Hardwick and she married John Bacon Bourland
in 1824 and he died in 1840. She must have married a Putman or Putnam after
that as Alley was born after John died. Only really available one in the area
would have been Sam junior from Crawford County. He was around in 1840, but not
in 1850. Best guess is that he was a second husband, except I have him dying
unmarried in 1837. She also went under the name Nancy Merriman in the 1840s.
Very confusing. She was here in the 1840s and will be in 1880.
JOHN PUTMAN White Oak, Franklin County
He is
John Augustus Putman, a son of William Jacob Putman and Martha Hampton from
DeKalb County Alabama. William was a son of Ezekiel Putman from Georgia. John
is 27 AL and Elizabeth Brown 27 TN and children William 3 GA and Joseph 3
months AR. They are living in a household headed by Thomas McBride 42 NC and
Agnes McBride 30 NC. He was born in April 1843. His wife Elizabeth Brown was a
daughter of Benjamin B. and Martha Brown, and was born in April 1842. In 1880
the family will be in Parker County Texas, and then back here in Sebastian
County Arkansas by 1900. John will die there October 28, 1904.
WILLIAM PUTMAN White Oak, Franklin County
He is
William J. Putman, Junior 22 AL, John Augustus Putman's brother. He is living
with a Monroe Burch 34 TN and Mary 36 TN and their family next door to the
above John in White Oak Township. This listing is interesting. Forrester Putman
married Ayrie Burch in Alabama, and his brother married Sally Burch, so Monroe
is kinfolk. He will be in Tarrant County Texas in 1880 and 1900 and married to
Bettie Ann Farmer. His widowed mother Martha will be with him in 1880.
ALEX PUTNAM Talladega, Jefferson County
He is
21 TN and works on a farm with Henry Nicks. Best guess is he is a son of Martin
and Juda Putman from McNairy County Tennessee. He was listed in 1850 as William
1, and in 1860 as William A. 10. Only guy that fits.
SELESTE & ELLA PUTNAM Clark, Johnson County
Celeste
is 12 GA, Ella 10 GA. They are at school and living with a Freeman family. The
Eliza 35 GA is their mom. She is Mary Elizabeth Freeman, now the widow of
Thomas Whitney Putman who died in the Civil War. They were in Cherokee County
Georgia in 1860.
JOHN W. PUTNAM Spadra, Johnson County
He is
a farmer 28 AL, Sarah Poe his wife 18 TN, John 1 TN. He was listed earlier in
Arkansas County. Just moving I guess. He is a son of Howard Mercer Putman and
Sarah Burch, and was born in Benton County Alabama on March 21, 1842. He walked

Richard Jacob Putman 21 GA and living with Robert Coffman and family. He is a
son of Jacob Putman and Narcissa Patton. Narcissa was the common law wife of
sorts of Jacob Putman. She is using her maiden name, because she was never
married. Narcissa later will refer to herself as the ‘widow of Jacob Putman’ in
a document later in this decade. He never seemed to have lived with his father
Jacob. However in a letter his father Jacob wrote in 1863, he was listed as a
son. He’ll be in Texas in 1880 with his wife Nancy Hamilton Hall who he married
here.

two kids Alice 8 AR and James 5 AR are with Charles Lewis 31 MO and his wife
Alina P. 36 TN. Alina would be Eleanea Putman, widow or ex-wife of James C.

Mary 19 AR and William 17 AR at home. Jahu, his father is listed as John 86 SC
SC SC, but a line was then drawn through the name and marked deceased. Jahu
died January 17, 1881 and the census was taken a few months earlier. I guess
the recorder scratched out his name when he was making the final tabulations.
James Putman will die in Rogers, Arkansas on July 31, 1882 of typhoid fever.
MARTIN R. PUTMAN Carrollton, Carroll County
He is
Robert Martin Putman, son of Wilson Putman junior and Rebecca Flemming. The

McCoy 34 MO and no children. They were married here September 11, 1879. He is a
son of Jabel Putman. He came down from Oregon County Missouri and will be in
Eastland County Texas in time for the 1900 census. There also is a 6 year old
James Putman living in the County with a Mickins family, but he is listed as a
nephew born in AR but father born in NY and mother in PA so not certain of the
relationship here. Think he is a son of James brother William Putman.
D. A. (DAVID ALEXANDER)
PUTMAN Bowman, Dorsey County
This
is David Alexander Putman son of Jesse Mercer Putman of Hall County Georgia.
His wife is Fanny Childers. He is 31 GA and Fanny 28 GA and four sons,

She
is listed as 35 TN and widowed. She lives with her aunt Mary Gray 49 KY and her
family.
NANCY PUTMAN Mulberry, Franklin County
She
is 74 AL AL AL, and lives with Hume and Adaline Bourland. Nancy is Nancy
Hardwick and she married John Bacon Bourland in 1824 and he died in 1840. She
must have married a Putman or Putnam after that as Alley was born after John
died. Only really available one in the area would have been Sam junior from
Crawford County. He was around in 1840, but not in 1850. Best guess is that he
was a second husband. She also went under the name Nancy Merriman in the 1840s.
She’s been here since the 1840s.
JAMES PUTNAM Ouachita, Garland County

25 GA, Malinda 23 SC. He looks to be the son of Andrew Jackson Putnam from

Albert Pike in the Quachita National Forest, in Pike County Arkansas on
February 13, 1895 and is in one of the graves in the Putman Cemetery there. I
have a photo of these stones. Malinda's tombstone reads born 1837 died 1895.
She was born in Tennessee on November 29, 1837 and she died in Big Fork,
Arkansas November 18, 1895.

AR are still at home as is a niece Ella Putman 20 GA. Sally or Sarah Carden his
second wife is alive and does appear in this census in Washington County with
her Carden Kids and their daughter Millie Putman 14. I assume they divorced.
WILLIAM PUTMAN Big Creek, Sebastian County
He is
age 26 GA GA GA and his wife Martha Delaney is 24 is from Ohio with no
children. They were married here May 16, 1880. He is a son of Thomas Whitney
Putman and Mary Freeman. He was listed with that family in Georgia in 1850 as 7
years old. In 1870 he was with mom in Franklin County Arkansas. He was born
June 7, 1854. He is married to Martha Delaney, born in Ohio in 1856. They were

was discharged two years later in March 1863 at Port Hudson, Louisiana. After
his mother died, he went to Illinois for a year and then returned to Arkansas.
On January 20, 1869, he married Martha Ann Ward, daughter of Castleton and Mary
Ward.
JOHN PUTMAN Upper Township, Sebastian County
John
is a son of John Putman and Elizabeth Goode. He is now 24 AR and his wife Sarah
is 31 IN. With them are her three children by a prior marriage: Mollie Null 11
AR, Jennie Null 10 AR and Minnie Null 6 AR. Also with them is Mary Taylor 61 IN
KY TN listed as mother in law. This leads me to believe Sarah was a Taylor who
married a Null who had died.
SARAH PUTMAN Fayetteville, Washington County
She
is or was the second wife of Berry Barton Putman. She is 55 NC and with her son
Ed Carden 25 AR, who is an Insurance Agent in Fayetteville and daughter Mallie
J. Carden is 23 AR. Then there is the only daughter she and Barry had, Millie
F. Putman 14 AR. Sarah died August 19, 1881. Her obituary stated she had been
living in Fayetteville for 4-5 years, so she must have been divorced or
separated. She lists herself as being married, Barry states he is widowed.
Guess the second marriage just didn't work out as hoped.
REDING PUTMAN Fayetteville, Washington County
Reding
Junior is 49 IL KY NJ is a hardware store operator and his wife Elizabeth Reed
is 44 GA, Robert 23 AR is a tinsmith, Leigh Reding my great grandfather is 5 AR
and Reding's mother, Phoebe Marsh 93 NJ is with them. Also living with them is Levi Combs 83 --. He is a brother
of Reding senior's first wife, Stacey Combs. There are also some 16 boarders
who were studying at the new University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. They put
up students for years. They had a big house. Also of the first 6 students at
what is now University of Arkansas 2 were kids of Reding and Elizabeth. I
remember back in the 1970s, my folk went back to Fayetteville and were honored
as descendants of the first year of students on the 100th
Anniversary of the school. It was originally called Arkansas Agricultural and
Industrial college back then.
MARY PUTMAN Vineyard, Washington County

in Evansville, Arkansas and was boarding with the James McCormick family. Mary
Belle Putman was born on August 27, 1859. She grew up in Fayetteville and was
educated at what is now the University of Arkansas and graduated from Woodland

born in Virginia on June 8, 1823. Benjamin was born in Virginia on December 27,
1849. He moved to Arkansas with his parents in 1850. This was his second
marriage; being first married to Ellen Holcomb who died in 1882. Benjamin
Deaver ran a general dry goods store in Springdale, Arkansas, where they lived.
They had one child that was born and died on September 10, 1885. Benjamin
Franklin Deaver died in Springdale on July 2, 1903. Mary Belle remained in
Springdale and died there on August 9, 1931 and was buried in Bluff Cemetery in
Fayetteville.

Musgrove 60 TN is the widow of Daniel Thomas Putman. Dan was a son of William
Putman and Alla Bridges. With her is her son William Putman 17 AR. They will
soon move to McAlester, Oklahoma where she will die. William will be in Texas
in 1900 and then back in McAlester with his wife Rosa by 1910.
JOSEPH PUTMAN Lower LaFave, Yell County
Joseph
Henry Putman is 11 AR AR AR and listed as a son of John and Sarah (Braton)
Lackey of Lower Lefarve Township. I have no idea to whom he is related, but I
think it is to William J. Putman, son of Daniel Thomas Putman. A relative
states that Joseph was illegitimate and while his father was a Putman, his
mother was a Brown. Now to further confuse you. I have spoken with a Peggy
Lackey in Arkansas, and she says her husband is a stepson of Emma Putman (a
daughter of Daniel Thomas Putman) who married John Gallagher in Washington
County in 1877. Must be a connection here. See 1900 for his family.
WILLIAM PUTMAN Riley, Yell County
William
10 AR TN AR is listed as a nephew living with William and Rebecca Ray. William
Ray is 26 TN and Rebecca is 20 AR GA AR. She may be a Putman. I believe that
William Putman might be a brother of the above Joseph. William is a son of
William James Putman and Malinda Harrison. They were married here, he was born
here, but they were in Red River County Texas in 1870. Something happened as he
is suddenly back here with relatives. See 1900 Yell County for his family.
JAMES W. PUTMAN Wilson, Yell County
James
14 AR AL VA is a farm worker/boarder with James 27 GA and Alice 18 AR AL VA
BATES in Wilson Township. James and Alice were listed as stepchildren of
Charles and Eleana Lewis here in the 1870 census. I believe (rather guess) they
are children of James C. and Eleanor Putman (see 1860 and 1870 Yell County). Charles Lewis married her here on
December 19, 1869. Alice Putman married James F. Bates in Yell County August
20, 1879.

His wife Alice Ferguson is 46 MO and Walter is 20 AR. John K. Putman was born
September 19, 1851. He married Alice C. Ferguson on November 19, 1874. I have
it that he died in Capron, Oklahoma on October 24, 1934. He was a baker. They
were here in 1880 and will be in Capron, Washington County Oklahoma by 1910.
Alice is listed alone in 1920. I don’t find either in 1930 so the above death
date is probably wrong.

is Martha Anne Bell, the widow of Robert Martin Putman. She is 46 with Dee
