DISTRICT
of COLUMBIA
CENSUS
REPORTS
1790 -
1930
UPDATED
AUGUST 17, 2011
This
was not a hot spot for Putmans or Putnams until well into the late 19th
and beginning of the 20th Centuries. What we know as Washington DC
now was larger when it began as Virginia supplied a bunch of acres in 1801 that
were returned in 1846. It was still a Territory 1895. Georgetown became a part
in 1895 and it then became the District of Columbia that it is today.
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA 1790-1800-1810 CENSUS
There
were no Putnams or Putmans listed in any of these years. Actually not sure the
District as such existed then.
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA 1820 CENSUS
CALEB PUTNAM Georgetown, Washington DC
He's
Charles Caleb Putnam (1904) from Newburyport, Massachusetts and you’ll read all
about him in the Mississippi Section. He was born October 1, 1793 and was a son
of Caleb Putnam and Hannah Russell of Newburyport, Massachusetts. He came to
Georgetown about 1816 and will marry Margaret Murdock there October 17, 1820. They
will be moving to Tennessee in 1824 and be in Knox County in the 1830 census,
then to New Orleans and then to Smith County, Mississippi in the 1840s. He died
in Madison Parish, Louisiana in 1862, and Margaret died in New Orleans in July
1887. His younger brother Benjamin is with him now. The listing is 01011-00000.
There is a Charles Putnam in his mid 20s in St. Landry Parish Louisiana now in
1820 listed as a manufacturer. I think this is him as well.
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA 1830-1840-1850 CENSUS
There were no Putmans or Putnams listed here in these census reports. However, there is a marriage record of a George M. Putnam marrying Mary Ann Parker in Washington on June 6, 1856. George Melville Putnam is number 2563, a son of Elisha D. Putnam (1150) and Nancy Melville of Charlestown, Sullivan County, New Hampshire. He was born there October 29, 1827. Now, best I can figure, is that Elisha either got a divorce from Nancy (who is single back in New Hampshire in both the 1850 and 1860 census), or just took off with two of his kids, this George and his brother William Francis Putnam (2564). Elisha will die on May 1, 1864 at the home of his son William. William, who married Malinda Thomas, will die here as well on April 30, 1868.
DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA 1860 CENSUS
There were no Putnams or Putmans listed in this report. But I know that the above Elisha D. Putnam, William Francis Putnam and George Melville Putnam are all here.
