GEORGIA
CENSUS
REPORTS
1820 -
1900
UPDATED
FEBRUARY 3, 2012
Georgia
was an original Crown Colony and contained the entire Southeast. In 1788 it became
the Fourth State. Land Lotteries in the first part of the 1800s opened great
opportunities for free land and a great many came down from the Carolinas to
settle. This then forced the, then resident, Cherokee Indians further and
further West. The 1820 census is the first census that remains. The earlier
ones were destroyed in the War of 1812.
In
the 1820 census males are broken down 0-9, 10-15, 16-18, 19-25, 26-44, 45 and
older. Females are divided 0-9, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
In
the 1830 and 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14,
15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.
From
1850 on ages and states of birth are shown. In the full 1880 census places of
birth are listed for the person, their father and their mother. In the 1880
Soundex only families with children under 10 are listed. In the 1900 Soundex,
all families are listed.

GEORGIA 1820 CENSUS
In
the 1820 census males are broken down 0-9, 10-15, 16-18, 19-25, 26-44, 45 and
older. Females are divided 0-9, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
CHAS F. PUTNAM Chatham County.
000001 20101. He is listed in Savannah. He
should be George Frazier Putnam, son of Henry Putnam from Massachusetts. He
will die here in Savannah in 1845. His dad Henry is number 1048 in Eben
Putnam’s book on the New England line. Henry was born in Medford, Mass. and
died in about 1815. Henry’s last wife and widow Priscilla Groom is presently in
Putnam County. George never married that I am aware of, but he did take over
guardianship of his brother James and sister Adeline when his dad died. But,
I’m not really certain who all these other folks are.
C. (CHARLES) E.
PUTNAM Glynn County
000010 12000. This is Charles Putnam, son of
Dr. Benjamin Putnam and Ann Malcolm. From Massachusetts via Savannah. Charles
was born about 1797 in Savannah. He was a preacher in Glynn and McIntosh
counties, Georgia, mostly in Brunswick. I do not think he ever married. He died
in Darien, Glynn County in 1847.
A. (ANN) PUTNAM Glynn County
301000 10201. This is Ann Sophia Malcolm,
Benjamin Putnam’s widow. Benjamin is number 414 in Eben Putnam’s books. He was
born in Danvers, Massachusetts August 26, 1751. He was a surgeon in the
Revolution and then settled in Savannah in the later 1780s. He received a land
grant in Georgia in 1805, and died shortly after that. Benjamin’s line goes
back Benjamin > Henry > Eleazer > John > John Putnam from England.
JESSE PUTNAM Habersham County
000001 00001. He is a son of James & Joice
Putman from Union County South Carolina. He was born there in about 1773 and
was in Union County in 1800. His wife was named Sarah, but I don’t have a last
name. He’ll be in Bedford County Tennessee next. He will die there in September
or October of 1833. His line goes back Jesse > James > Zachariah >
Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas Putnam from England.
MARK PUTNAM Habersham County
010010
00100. Marcus is a son of Jesse's brother Joseph Putman. He too is going to
Tennessee where he will die shortly.
EZEKIEL PUTMAN Hall County
220201 11110. He is Barnet Putman's son, and
was born in Union County South Carolina in the early 1770s. He married Hannah
Brazelton in Anderson County South Carolina in 1800 or 1801. About 1806, he
went to Warren County Kentucky with his parents and brothers. He was there in
the 1810 census. His brother Daniel moved up into Indiana, and Ezekiel and his
brother Thomas moved back down to Hall County Georgia around 1817 or 1818. They
will be here in 1830, and then move to Cass County about 1831. Hannah will die
there in 1833, and he will marry Sarah Hesterly in 1835. Ezekiel will die in
about 1845 and Sarah will be ‘missing’ by 1850. This line goes back Ezekiel
> Barnet > Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas Putnam from
England.
THOMAS PUTMAN Hall County
320001
21010. He is another of Barnet's son, and Ezekiel’s brother. He was born in the
late 1860s when the family was still in North Carolina. He then moved with them
to South Carolina in 1773 and into Anderson County in the 1790s. He married
Mary Barton there in about 1800. He was the first of the family to move into
Kentucky, getting there around 1803-4, and was there in the 1800. He remained
there till about 1817 when he joined his brother Ezekiel here in Hall County.
Mary will die here in the early 1830s, and Thomas will die here in 1835. Some
of the kids will be here in 1840 and a couple of others will be in Cherokee
County. His line is the same as his brother Ezekiel’s.
CHARLES E. PUTNAM McIntosh County
000200 00000. He is the same as the Charles in
Glynn County. He is a Minister traveling these two counties. He was a son of Benjamin
Putnam and Ann Sophia Malcolm from Savannah. He never married. Family from New
England.
PATMAN
FAMILIES Oglethorpe County
There
are several Patman families here headed by David, John, William and James. They
are here in 1830 and 1840 and then over in Floyd County by 1850 through about
1880. Several of the kids later moved to Texas. I didn’t see them at first
until 1850. Confusion to me came then in 1850 when several of Ezekiel Putman’s
sons moved into Cherokee County in the 1830s and then into the same area of
Floyd County in the late 1840s. I started listing them as Putmans and possible
kids of Ezekiel and his second wife. But a guy simply wouldn’t have two sons
named, David, Elias, and James. I looked at the actual censuses again and the
names not only looked like Patman, they were now indexed as Patman both in
Georgia and later in Texas. No wonder I was confused. I have now, in 2008,
simply erased all these families from the Putman Census stuff and as possibly
connected to Ezekiel Putman. Whew!
PRISCILLA PUTNAM Putnam County
100000 11010. She is Priscilla Croom, the
second wife and now widow of Henry Putnam of Savannah. Another New England
Family from Medford, Massachusetts via Charleston, South Carolina. Henry’s line
is Henry > Eleazer > Henry > Eleazer > John > John Putnam from
England.
GEORGIA 1830 CENSUS
In
the 1830 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14, 15-19,
20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.
MARY PUTMAN Coweta County
112 110001. A widow. No idea who she is. Might
be connected with the Henry Putnam family or Hosea in the next county over.
C. (CHARLES) E.
PUTNAM Glynn County
010001 1. He is a Minister traveling two
counties. He is a son of Benjamin Putnam and Ann Sophia Malcolm from Savannah.
He never married. He will die in Darien, Glynn County in 1847. Family from New
England.

was born in South Carolina in 1801, and married a gal named Arletha Faith
Libby. She was born in North Carolina in 1812. They are in Floyd County by the
1850, and I think in Gordon County in the 1860s when he died. By 1870 his kids
are all around that County.
THOMAS PUTMAN Hall County
12100001 0011. Thomas is now in his 50s like his
brother. His wife Mary Barton had died in the past few years. Thomas will die
himself here in 1835.
DAVID PUTMAN Hall County
00001 00001. He is Thomas Putman and Mary
Barton' son. He was born in Warren County Kentucky on October 19, 1807. His
wife is Lecy Castleberry. They were married here January 7, 1830. Very shortly,
they will move to Cherokee County and he will establish the Putman Gold Mine
there. The family will remain there. David will die there July 5, 1874 and Lecy
on July 19, 1886. They will only have sons, and three will die in the Civil
War.
MALZIE PUTMAN Hall County
00000 20001. She is Malissa Goss, widow of
Wilson Putman. Wilson was the eldest son of Thomas Putman. He married Malissa
here January 12, 1826, and he just died here March 10, 1830. Malissa will marry
Perry Garmon here on December 4, 1831 and she and the kids will be in Lumpkin
County Georgia by 1840. They will then move to Polk County Arkansas with some
of Ezekiel Putman’s kids and remain there the rest of their lives.
HOSEA PUTNAM Pike County
11001 110011. I don't know if he is a son of
Henry and Priscilla Putnam, or someone else. He is a real tricky one. He is in
his 20s and he just sorta pops up here. We will follow him and his kids for a
long long time, but I just do not know who his folks are. My best guess is they
are Henry and Priscilla from Charleston, South Carolina and then here in
Georgia. He states he was born in South Carolina in the 1850 census. Hopefully
there will be more news at 11:00. Anyway, he married Elizabeth Wilson in Jasper
County August 24, 1820. They are in Muscogee County by 1850.
GEORGIA 1840 CENSUS
In
the 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14, 15-19,
20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.
EZEKIEL PUTMAN Cass County (now Bartow County)
He
moved to Cass County in the early 1830s and his wife Hannah Brazelton died here
in 1833. He is now married to Sarah Hesterly, they were married here June 9,
1835. The listing is 101000001 100001. He is in his 60s, Sarah in her 30s. He
will die here in 1845. Sarah will be in nearby Floyd County with the kids
through the 1870 census.
DANIEL PUTMAN Cherokee County
110001 111001. He is Ezekiel's son. He and his
wife Nancy McConnell have just moved here from Hall County. Probably to join in
the Gold Rush that just started here. They will be here till they die, she in
1879 and he in 1888.
ELIAS PUTMAN Cherokee County
102001
02101. He is Ezekiel's son. He and
Arletha Libby also just moved from Hall County. They will soon move to Floyd
County and be there by 1850. Then they will be in Gordon County and in the 1860
listing there he is listed as insane. Elias will die there sometime in the
1860s.
DAVID PUTMAN Cherokee County
130001 000001. He is Thomas Putman and Mary
Barton' son. He was born in Warren County Kentucky on October 19, 1807. His
wife is Lecy Castleberry. They were married here January 7, 1830. They just
moved to Cherokee County from Hall County and he established the Putman Gold
Mine here. The family will remain here. David will die July 5, 1874 and Lecy on
July 19, 1886. He is the one who started this whole Gold Rush thing with his
kinfolk.
CHARLES E. PUTNAM Glynn County.
1210101 01. The minister is still traveling the
area around Brunswick, Georgia. He is a son of Benjamin Putnam and Ann Sophia
Malcolm from Savannah. He never married. He will die in Darien, Glynn County in
1847. Family from New England.
WILLIS PUTMAN Hall County
30011 00001. Willis, Thomas' son is still
remaining in the area. The other older male is his brother, Jesse Mercer
Putman. Willis was born in Kentucky in 1814, and married Amanda Thompson here
on January 28, 1836. She will die shortly on October 4, 1841. Willis will then
marry Martha C. Williamson in Jackson County Georgia on February 7, 1844. They
will have two more kids before she dies around 1848. In 1846, he will sell this
original farm to his brother Jesse and move to Jackson County. But after Martha
died, he returned here and will be here in 1850.
ANDERSON PUTMAN Murray County
10001 100010001. He is a son of Elias Putman
Senior of North Carolina. The older woman is Rebecca McGill, her mother. He was
born in North Carolina in 1814, and came down here in the 1830s. He married
Jane McGill here May 15, 1837. Her mother has been widowed since her husband
John McGill died in 1819. They will be here in 1850, and then over the line in
Polk County Tennessee in 1860 and then back here in Murray County after that.
This line goes back Anderson > Elias > Benjamin > Thomas >
Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas Putnam from England to Virginia.
WILLIAM J. PUTNAM Paulding County
00002 0001. This should be William John
Putman who is married to Elizabeth Carnes. She will be widowed here in 1850
with a couple of kids. As of now I haven’t the foggiest who his folks are. Must
be connected to Hosea, Henry or another New England line.
JACOB PUTMAN Walker County
21001 10001. He is Ezekiel's son, and was
born here in Hall County when the family first came here before going up to
Kentucky for the second time. He was born here March 13, 1810, and married
Sarah H. Johnson on February 28, 1833. They will be in DeKalb County Georgia by

son of Benjamin Risley Putnam and Eunice Morgan. He was born in Saratoga, NY

1381. The line goes back from Gideon > Benjamin > Gideon > Stephen
> Elisha > Edward > Thomas > John Putnam the immigrant to
Massachusetts. They are here in 1860 too. The other couple is his brother
Charles Edwin Putnam (2976) and his wife Mary Louisa Duncan. Charles will be
here too in 1860, and then head out to Illinois and then to Davenport, Iowa

County Kentucky on October 19, 1807. His wife is Lecy Castleberry. They were
married here January 7, 1830. They just moved to Cherokee County from Hall

S. L. PUTMAN Division 15, Cherokee County

2 GA. Not certain who he is. In 1860, there is a Sarah Putman 35 SC and a

Either way, I don’t know who he is.
DANIEL PUTNAM Division 15, Cherokee County

South Carolina. His wife Nancy McConnell is 43 GA. Children are Martha 21 GA,

COVINGTON) PUTMAN
Division 30, Floyd County
This
is Elijah Covington, Elias' eldest son 24 GA and a blacksmith. His wife Mary
Ellen Dodd is only 15 NC and they have a 1 year old daughter, Hannah. Mary
Ellen’s folks, John and Charlotte Dodd from North Carolina, live next door or
more likely Elijah and Mary are living with them. He either left Mary Ellen or
she died. He will soon marry Malinda White. He will then ‘abandon’ all his kids
from his first marriage, leave them with Mary Ellen’s folks, and take off to
Arkansas. In 1860, I find the daughter Minnie Hannah age 11 GA living with Mary
Ann Burns age 26 GA. This may be Mary Ellen and she remarried and then became a
widow again. Or maybe She died as I have been told and Mary Ann simply took
Minnie in. Anyway, Elijah and Malinda will be in Arkansas forever, and both
will die there in 1895. They will have ten kids of their own, all in Arkansas.
To further estrange his first family, Elijah sided with the Union Side, and yet
his family was ‘devastated’ by Union troops when the razed Georgia in the early
1860s. His son John Ezekiel never forgave him.

DANIEL PUTMAN Wild Cat, Cherokee County
Daniel
is a son of Ezekiel Putman and Hannah Brazelton. He is 58 SC and his wife Nancy
McConnell 53 GA. Their children, all born in Georgia were: Henry 24, William
23, Howard 19, John 16, James W. 13 and Nancy 9. Daniel Putman was born April
1, 1802. He married Nancy McConnell in Hall County on September 8, 1825. They
have been here since the 1840s, and will live here the rest of their lives.
Nancy will die here August 3, 1879, and in 1880 Daniel will be living with his
son James and is 78 at the time. He will die January 19, 1888. Both are buried
in the Landmark Baptist Church in Holly Springs, Cherokee County Georgia.

SARAH PUTMAN Woodstock, Cherokee County
Sarah
is a widow 35 SC and lives with her daughter Ann 12 SC. I think she might be
connected to the S. L. Putman who was here in 1850. They had a daughter 2 years
old.
JAMES MADISON
PUTNAM Fayetteville, Fayette
County
Henry
Putnam's son is 50 GA, Susan Milner 45 GA, A. E. (Aryanda) 19 GA, Willie 15 AL,
Jesse M. 13 GA, Susan W. 11 GA, Leola 4 GA. They were in Meriwether County in
1850 listed as Patmans. This is a line from New England before the Revolution.
MIN H. (MINNIE
HANNAH) PUTMAN Rome, Floyd County
She
is 11 GA and living with Mary Ann Burns 26 GA and her daughter Rosaline Burns 8
GA. She is a daughter of Elijah Covington Putman who deserted his family and
moved to Arkansas in the early 1850s. Mary Ann may very well be her mother Mary
Ellen Dodd who was only 15 back in 1850 so ages are perfect.
WILLIS PUTMAN Cummings, Forsyth County
Willis
is now 47 with his third wife Harriett, 33 GA. Harriett was the widow of a
Hawkins and her two daughters, Martha 12 and Julia E. 9, were with her. Also at

then go to Texas with his son Thomas and again marry another widow, Susan Young
there in 1873. He will die in the 1880s in McLennon County Texas.
HEPSAY A. (ANN)
PUTMAN Gilmer County
Hepsey
is a problem. She is a widow 42 SC with three Williams children, Andrew 17 GA,
Louisa 15 GA and Mary 12 GA. Then there are two more Williams kids listed that
should be listed as Putman. They are William W. Putnam 6 GA and Robert C.
Putnam 6 GA. They are twins born July 31, 1854. Hepsey had married John Putnam
September 25, 1855 in Gilmer County. Question is as to who John Putnam or
Putman was, and who he was related to. He may be from the New England family or
the North Carolina Quaker family. He doesn’t fit into any of the Southern
Putman lines.
O. D. PUTMAN Sonora Township, Gordon County
He is
single and a day laborer at age 25 GA. He should be Odian Wilson Putman the son
of David Putman and Lecy Castleberry from Cherokee County. He was home in 1850
and not there now. The age should be closer to 27 though, but must be him. No
one else can fit. He will be married in Cherokee County in 1870.
ELIAS PUTMAN Spring Township, Gordon County
Ezekiel's
eldest is 56 GA. Arletha Libby his wife is 43 NC, Rebecca 18 GA, Savira 15 GA,

7 GA, Palestine 5 GA and Martha 4 GA. Elias is listed as “Insane.” He will die
in the next few years.
JOHN & REBECCA
PUTMAN Spring Township, Gordon
County
John
is 9, Rebecca 5 both born in Georgia. They are living with John & Charlotte
Dodd from North Carolina. In 1870 Rebecca and her older sister Hannah will be
here. Hannah is presently living with Mary Ann Burns back in Floyd County. They
are children of Elijah and Mary Ellen Dodd Putman. Mary died a couple of years
ago, and Elijah is in Arkansas with a new wife, and NONE of the children from
his first marriage with Mary Dodd are there. The Dodds are the kids’
grandparents. John will be in Comanche County Texas in 1880.
POSEY M.
PUTMAN Sugar Valley, Gordon County
He is
a farmer 21 GA, his wife Martha E. (Carpenter?) is 22 NC and they have Savannah

probably are Martha’s folks and siblings. Ages fit. Anyway, he is a son of
Elias Putman and Arletha Libby and was at home with them in Floyd County in
1850. Posey will join the CSA and be killed in the Civil War in Winchester
Virginia on September 20, 1864. Martha is widowed here in 1870 with the kids.
