1840 - 1900

Iowa was a sort of orphan for decades. The Indians held it past 1800 then it became part of the Indiana Territory from 1803 through 1821, then part of Missouri, Michigan and Wisconsin Territories. Finally in 1838 it became a territory unto itself and in 1846 became the 29th State.

The first Federal Census took place in 1840. In the 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10-14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc. From 1850 on ages and states of birth are shown. In 1880 places of birth are listed for the person, their father and their mother. In the 1880 Soundex only families with children under 10 are listed. In the 1900 Soundex, all families are listed.

IOWA 1840 CENSUS

JASON PUTNAM Linn County

Listing is 10001 000011. He is the only form of kinfolk in the state at this time. He is number 3416, a son of Jonas Putnam (1696) and Sally Ward who are somewhere here in the state now in the 1840s. His dad will die here in Iowa in 1851. He was born in Andover, Vermont January 21, 1824. He isn’t married now, so the rest are probably siblings. He will be in Scott County, Illinois in 1850 single, and in 1860 married there.

JOHN PUTNAM Jefferson Township, Clayton County

He is 36 VT, a miner, living with the Baker family from Vermont too. He'll be here and be married to Rachel Philbrick in 1860 and 1870.

WILLIAM PUTNAM District 5, Clinton County

He is 33 PA, Rachel Scott 26 CAN, John W. 6 CAN and Sarah 2 IL. He is probably a son of John W. Putnam of Erie County, PA. Only two families had sons under 5 in PA in the 1820 census. They will be in Rock Island County, Illinois in 1860 and he will be a lawyer then.

ABRAHAM H. PUTMAN Davis County

The eldest son of Elijah Putman and Elizabeth Duff is shown as 32 IN, Elizabeth Moran, his wife, is 30 MD. The kids are: Sarah Jane 10 IL, Elijah 9 IL, Julia Ann 7 IL, Elizabeth 3 IA and William J. 1 IA. Southern Putman Branch.

DANIEL T. (THOMAS) PUTMAN Davis County

The next eldest of Elijah's sons. He is 28 IL, Genet (Jeanette Roundey) 24 NY, and they have a son, Stiles 1 IA. Southern Putman Branch.

ELIJAH PUTMAN Davis County

Dad is 56 SC, Elizabeth Duff his wife 52 SC, Louisa 19, Elijah 17, Green Marion 13, Phoebe 12, Lucinda 8, Mary Ann 6 and Jasper Newton 4, all born in Illinois. Elijah is a son of Daniel Putman and Prudence Skelton. He was born in Anderson County, SC, moved to Warren County, Kentucky, then to Gibson County, Indiana and to Fulton County, Illinois before heading even further west. He and Elizabeth will, however, now remain here all their lives. This line goes back Elijah > Daniel > Barnet > Zachariah I > Thomas III > Thomas II > Thomas Putnam. Southern Putman Branch.

MARY PUTNAM Burlington, Des Moines County

She is 27 MA living with the Browning family. She will be here in 1860 at age 34 NY. She is a daughter of Jonas Putnam and Sally Ward from Vermont and then Queensburg, New York where she was born in 1822. Her folks are somewhere around. Jonas will die in Augusta, Des Moines County June 18, 1851.

RUFUS PUTNAM District 7, Dubuque County

James Rufus is a son of Howard Putnam and his second wife Caroline Bush from Knox County, IN. He is 27 IN, Cinthia (Cynthia Ann Bradley) 23 TN. Rufus and Cynthia were married here January 20, 1843. They will be here in 1860. There are no children listed for some reason, but they have Howard B. 5, William Franklin 3, John 2 and Albert a couple of months old.

EBEN PUTNAM District 7, Dubuque County

He is a son of Eber Putnam and Triphosa Ballard from Knox County, Indiana and the Wabash County, Illinois. He is 22 IN, his wife Barbara Ann (Painter) is 18 PA. They were just married here July 25, 1850 according to the Iowa marriage records, but it must have been earlier as this census was taken in June. No kids listed. The line goes back from Eben > Eber > Howard > Samuel > Jeptha > Ebenezer > John Jr. > John Putnam from England.

A. V. (ABRAHAM VEDDER) PUTNAM Keokuk Township, Lee County

He is 37 NY, a printer, Sarah Houghton, his wife, 36 NY, Cornelius 13 NY, John A. 10 IL, Catherine 6 IL. Also there is Mary Houghton 44 NY, Sarah’s sister. The family was in Morgan County, Illinois in 1840. Abraham is a son of Matthew (Mattius) Putman and Nancy Ann Vedder and was born in Montgomery County, New York March 29, 1813. I don’t find them in 1860, but Sarah is alone with the kids in Sulphur Springs, Hopkins County, Texas in 1870 and 1880. Don’t know what happened as Abe won’t die until 1885 and it will be back in St. Johnsville, Montgomery County, New York.

JACOB PUTNAM District 4, Scott County

He is 38 NY, a farmer, Dosha 28 PA, Chauncy 13 NY, Permilia 11 NY, Margaret 10 NY and James 1 IA. They are gone by 1860. In 1880, the son James will be listed as Allison J. and will be in Jewell County, Kansas, as will his parents. In 1900, he will still be there, and his father Jacob will be there with him.

EDWIN PUTNAM Pleasant Township, Appanoose County

He is listed as Edward, but is Edwin Putnam. He is also shown as 22 (no state given and the age is too young. He was with his father, Newton Putnam, in Wells County, Indiana in 1850 at age 23. In 1870, he is in Jasper County at age 42 VT, so he should be 32 VT now), Sarah (Sarah Ann Oswald, his second wife) is 25 OH, Emma 10 IN, Josephine 6 IN, Joseph 2 IN. The first two children are by his first wife Hannah Oswald, Sarah’s sister.

GIDEON PUTNAM (JR.) Freemont Township, Benton County

He is a farmer, 59 born in Hancock, New Hampshire January 20, 1801, Sarah (Rice) is 53 MA, Charles Edward 21 NH (a teacher), Clara M. 16 NH, William S. (Skinner) 13 NH. He will be here in 1870 as well. Gideon is a son of Gideon Sr. (number 1873 in Eben's books) and Sarah Barnes of Temple, New Hampshire. Gideon worked in Nashua, New Hampshire and about 1847 lost the sight in one eye in an explosion in a stone quarry. The family moved here in 1854. He will die here October 23, 1878. Sarah will die a few months earlier. The line goes back Gideon > Gideon (1873) > Joseph (766) > Jacob (283) > Nathaniel > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John.

ALMA PUTNAM Cedar Township, Black Hawk County

She is 31 VT, living with the family of Jeremiah and Caroline Gay also from Vermont. Both Alma and Caroline are daughters of Daniel Putnam and Pamela French of Bethel, Vermont. Daniel is listed Number 1202 in Eben Putnam's books. Daniel died here September 7, 1859.

L. M. PUTNAM Washington Township, Buchanan County

He is a grain dealer. He is 45 CAN/ENG.

F. C. (FLETCHER CARTER) PUTNAM Shell Rock Township, Butler County

He is 30 VT, Sarah 19 NY. Also there is James Winship 21 NY, possibly Sarah's brother. He is a son of Fletcher Putnam Sr. of Grafton, Vermont and then Florence, New York. The elder Fletcher was a son of Daniel Putnam, number 513 in Eben's books. Fletcher Carter was at home with his folks in 1857 in Wabasha County, Minnesota. His folks are now in Wisconsin. This family will be here running a hotel in 1870.

HENRY PUTNAM Boardman Township, Clayton County

He is 38 VT (actually 29 CAN), Rose King 37 (27) CAN, Horace 8 VT, Howard 8 VT, Jessica 11 VT, Brizzle (son?) 7 IA, Cassandra 7 IA, Sarah 6/12 IA. Interesting, two sets of twins a year apart. Rose will die shortly in 1864, and Henry will marry Elizabeth Beaudette back in Canada in 1865 and then be back here in Lyons County, Iowa with her by the 1880 census. I changed the ages as Henry was born April 18, 1830 in St. Johns, Quebec just across the border from Vermont. He was born with the name Patenaude, and was listed as Henry Putnode in Westford, Chittenden County, Vermont in 1850. Rose was living two houses away at that time. Probably because there were several Putnams in Westford, he changed or had anglicized his name to Putnam sometime in the 1850s while in Vermont.

JACK PUTNAM Clayton Township, Clayton County

He is 44 VT, Mary 41 VT (actually Rachel Philbrick 26 IL), David 9 IA, Esther 7 IA, Alfred 5 IA and John 2 IA. He was here single in 1850. He married Rachel Philbrick here December 5, 1850. She will be here with him in 1870.

B. A. (BENJAMIN AUGUSTUS) PUTMAN Des Moines Township, Dallas County

He is 30 NY (VT) and a tanner. His wife Samantha Purinton is 22 CAN, Milton 2 IA, and Judson 8/12 IA. Also there is Melvina Parinton 16 CAN a teacher. There are a bunch of typos in this one. Benjamin was born in Bethel, Vermont on September 30, 1830. He is a son of Harvey Putnam and Rebecca Steward. He married Samantha Ellis Purinton in Erie County, New York on October 11, 1854. Melvina is Amanda Malvina Purinton and Samantha's sister, and will marry Gordon Needham here. They are in Boone County in 1870 and on, and he will die there June 14, 1896. Samantha goes into the 1900s, and will die here January 7, 1913.

ABRAHAM H. PUTMAN Bloomfield Township, Davis County

Elijah's son is 42 IN (wrongly listed as IA), Elizabeth Moran is 40 MO, Elijah 18 IL, Julia A. 16 IL, Louisa (listed Elizabeth in 1850) 10 IA, Herman (listed William in 1850, and Howard in 1870) 10 IA, Pierce 8 IA, Harriet 6 IA, Mary 4 IA and Augustus D. 3 IA. Southern Putman Branch. They will be in Schuyler County, Missouri in 1870.

ELIJAH PUTMAN Soap Creek Township, Davis County

Daniel and Prudence's son is now 66 SC, Elizabeth Duff 62 SC, Phoebe 23 IL, Jasper N. 17 IL. They also have taken in an orphan, Rebecca Stark 12 IN. Southern Putman Branch.

E. F. (ELIJAH FULTON) PUTMAN Soap Creek Township, Davis County

He is living next door to his father Elijah in Soap Creek. He is 27 IL, Nancy E. Brennan 23 KY, Vernon 2 IA and Eva Louisa 1 IA. Southern Putman Branch.

D. T. (DANIEL THOMAS) PUTMAN Soap Creek Township, Davis County

He is another of Elijah's kids. He is 38 IL, Jeanette Roundey 33 IL, Stiles H. 10 IA, Jiles 8 IA, Miles 7 IA, Harvey (Thomas Harvey) 6 IA, Virgil 4 IA and Horace 1 IA. Southern Putman Branch.

EDWARD K. PUTMAN Eden Township, Decatur County

He is 25 KY, Louisa 22 VA and Martha 5 IA. I don't find him in Kentucky, but he might be one of our 'Southern Branch'.

MELVIN C. PUTNAM Prairie Township, Delaware County

He is 22 ME, Margaret J. 21, Israel (?). He is a son of Simeon Walker Putnam.

S. W. (SIMEON WALKER) PUTNAM Prairie Township, Delaware County

He is 54 ME, Rhoda Watson 54 ME, John W. 19 IL and Orlando 15 IL. They were in De Kalb County, Illinois in 1850. He'll be widowed here in 1870 at age 63. He was born in 1806 in Anson Township, Somerset County, Maine. He is a son of John Putnam and Lucinda Walker of Anson, Maine. John's folks were John Putnam and Joanna Eames of Medford and then Chelmsford, Massachusetts. Simeon married Rhoda Watson in New Portland, Somerset County on October 6, 1826. This John was number 876 in Eben's book. John's folks were Israel Putnam and Sarah Hutchinson of Bedford, Massachusetts. Israel was number 329, and his folks were Israel Putnam (126) and Sarah Bacon of Salem and then Bedford, Mass. The line is Simeon > John > John > Israel > Israel > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John.

JAMES PUTMAN Burlington, Des Moines County

He is a son of Ernestus and Elizabeth (NY Dutch) from Darke County, Ohio. He is a miller 29 OH, Louisa R. Ruble is 22 IA, Alfred 3 IA, Ernestus R. 3 months IA. They are here in 1870 and he is widowed here by 1880.

MARY PUTNAM Burlington, Des Moines County

She is 34 (37) NY a seamstress living with William Rimey. She was here in 1850, and will be here till she dies in 1874. She is a daughter of Jonas and Sally Putnam from Vermont and then New York.

CLARA J. PUTNAM Vernon Township, Dubuque County

She is the daughter of Eben and Barbara Putnam from Indiana, who were here in 1850. She is with her grandparents George Painter and Catherine Helper Painter. She is 3 IA.

RUFUS PUTMAN Vernon Township, Dubuque County

He is James Rufus Putnam, son of Howard Putnam of Knox County IN. He is 38 IN, Syntha (Cynthia Ann Bradley) is 34 IN, Howard 15 IA, William 13 IA, John 11 IA, Albert 10 IA, Polly C. 8 IA, Asa 6 IA, Sarah 4 IA and James A. 1 IA. They were here in 1850 and will be for a spell.

ARTIMUS WALTON PUTNAM Jefferson Township, Greene County

He is a son of Israel Putnam of Rumford, Maine. He will next be off to Utah, having become a Mormon, and stay there all his life. His brothers Horatio Gates, Seth and Simeon will meet him there. Now he is 38 ME a shoemaker, Louisa (Louisa Drucilla Bunker) is 31 ME, Savannah Clarke, eldest son, 8 ME, Lotta (Lottie Viola) is 9/12 IA. Also there is Manda Wilkeson 14 MI.

MARTHA PUTNAM New Oregon Village, Howard County

She is 32 NOR, Louisa 13 WI, Martha J. 9 WI, William H. 8 WI, George 6 WI, Charles M. 2 IA and Adeline S. 10/12 IA.

BENNETT PUTMAN Elk Creek Township, Jasper County

Reding's son is a Doctor 34 IL (Fulton County), Martha Ann Burkhalter is 23, Reding 10 IL, Douglas 8 IA and Fanny A. 3 IA. Bennet's first wife, Susannah Effner died about 5 years ago, and he married Mattie here in Jasper County on September 29th, 1857. Fanny is the only child so far in this marriage. Bennett came out of Fulton County, Illinois and will be in Washington County, Arkansas near his father in 1870 and then back here in 1880. Reding was Elijah's brother. This line goes back Bennett > Reding > Daniel > Barnet > Zachariah I > Thomas III > Thomas II > Thomas Putnam of Virginia. Southern Putman Branch.

EVA PUTNAM Lynn Grove Township, Jasper County

She is 78 KY and has a son John Putnam 21 IL. They are living with John and Margaret Snyder. I don't find these folks in either IL or IA in 1850. She will be here in the County Poor House in 1880 at age 83. So this age is off at this time, probably in her 50s or 60s. No guesses on who these folks are.

GEORGE PUTNAM Graham Township, Johnson County

He is 35 NJ, Mary 21 MI, John 2 IA.

HENRY PUTNAM Iowa City, Johnson County

He is 47 CT, Mary 29 NY, Henry 17 WI and Homer 11 WI.

GEORGE E. PUTNAM Anamosa, Jones County

He is 26 NY, Harriet 21 MO, Clara 2 IA. He is a livery keeper. He is a son of Calvin Putnam (2848) and Mary Chase of Adams, Jefferson County, New York. He will die in Johnson County, Iowa in a few months on September 1, 1860.

R. A. (RUFUS AUSTIN) PUTNAM Monticello Township, Jones County

He is 28 MA and boarding, and is a clerk in a store. He is Rufus Austin Putnam junior, son of Rufus Austin Putnam and Frances Highborn Porter of Fitchburg, Mass. He will be here through the 1900 census. Doesn’t look as if he ever married.

J. D. (JOHN DRURY) PUTNAM Denmark Township, Lee County

He is 24 IL, Hannah E. Shaffer his wife 34 VA. They were married here September 2, 1858. He lives next to T. H. Putnam who is his brother. He is a son of Daniel Green Putnam from Warren County, Illinois. He will move to Yuba, California with his brother Thomas and both will be there (both single) in 1870. He will then go to Santa Ana, California and marry Louisa Murphy there February 2, 1873.

T. H. (THOMAS HOWARD) PUTNAM Denmark Township, Lee County

Thomas Howard Putnam is a son of Daniel Green Putnam. He is 29 IL, Hannah Farley 22 IA and Louisa (Ida Louise) 2 IA, George 10/12 IA. They are from Warren County, Illinois. He too will head to Yuba Township, Sutter County, California. I lose him after 1880. But in 1880, two of his children, George and Mark, are in San Diego living with Hannah’s family. Guess Tom died by then or something.

GEORGE PUTNAM Kingston City, Linn County

George Gideon Putnam is a lawyer, 30 NH, Martha Ann Blackstone, his wife, 27 ME, George W. 4 IA and Edward P. 3 IA. They were married in Nashua, New Hampshire in 1853. In 1870, he will live alongside Gideon Putnam (Jr.) in Benton County. He is Gideon's eldest son. See Gideon for the lineage.

GEORGE C. (CORNELIUS) PUTNAM Cedar Rapids, Linn County

He is 29 NY, Adelia Olivia Medbury his wife is 23 PA, Carrie 4 PA, DeWitt 2 IA, Edwin 2 months IA. He'll be here through the early 1900s. In an Iowa Biographical entry, we see he was born in Livingston County, New York on August 15, 1831. He went to McLean County, Penn. In 1851, where he met and married Adelia and had their daughter Carrie. Then they went to Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1856. They will remain here in Iowa all their lives. His death certificate in 1914, states his father was Barney Putnam. Now, as to parents. Everyone in Livingston County, NY was part of the Dutch family. He is a son of Barney and Margaret Putman from Mount Morris, Livingston County, New York. His folks were there through 1850, and are now in Genesee County, Michigan.

NAHUM D. (DANIEL) PUTNAM Le Grand Township, Marshall County

This listing reads William D., but it is Nahum D. (Daniel) Putnam. He is 27 OH, Mary Spake, his wife, 26 OH George 3/12 IA. His father Daniel B. (Baldwin) Putnam 70 VT is with them. His wife Sarah Margaret Curran should be there as well, but she is not listed. Daniel will die in 1880, Sarah not until 1884. In the 1830 census, there was a Dan Putnam in Huron County, and this is that family. Daniel Baldwin Putnam is a son of Uzziel Putnam of Cass County, Michigan. Daniel was born in Wardsboro, Windham County, Vermont. He went with his father to Ohio, and then back to Michigan where his first wife Louise Marie Ensign died. He married (Mrs.) Sarah Curran and moved to Iowa in 1854. The line goes back from Daniel > Uzziel > Uzziel > Amos > John > Nathaniel > John, the immigrant.

LOUISA & AMANDA PUTNAM Fulton Township, Muscatine County

They are sisters and teachers living with Diantha Henry 52 NY. Amanda is 17 NY, Louisa 20 NY. The daughters are Country School Teachers. Diantha was married to Johannes or John A. Putman from Montgomery County, New York. He died there in 1846 and she remarried to a man whose name looked like Bradley in 1850 where she was widowed for the second time in Medina County Ohio. She and the kids came out here and then got widowed again. The Nathan in Plymouth County is her son too. Dutch family.

N. (NATHAN) W. PUTNAM Plymouth Township, Plymouth County

He is a farmer, 29 NY, Sally Ann 21 MO, Pirle J. (listed as a son, but would be a daughter Pearl Jane probably) is 2/12 IA. He is a son of John and Diantha Putman from New York. His twice widowed mom and two sisters are in Muscatine County. The next entry up to be exact. Warren Putman’s notes state he was in Iowa in 1866, so he moved out right after the War.

(JOSHUA) ALONZO PUTNAM Brooklyn, Poweshiek County

He is 30 NY, Charlotte (Tinker) 18 PA. They were married here in Iowa on December 25, 1859. He is a master carpenter. The Cornelius nearby is a brother. They are sons of Harvey Putnam and Rebecca Steward of Bethel, Vermont. These brothers came here from Cherry Creek, Chautaugua County, New York in about 1857. Alonzo was born in Cherry Creek, Chautaugua County, New York. He will remain here until he dies March 22, 1861 during an epidemic of Typhoid Fever. His only daughter, Lucy, will die then as well. Charlotte will remarry on January 29, 1870 to William Scott, and sometime later marry a Hazelwood.

(HARVEY) CORNELIUS PUTNAM Bear Creek Township, Poweshiek County

Harvey Cornelius is a farmer. He is 34 NY (actually it is VT), Sarah Ann Stewart his wife 31 NY, Francis (son, who will die here in 1871) 9 NY, Helen 7 NY, Daniel (who will die here in 1879) 5 NY, Merton 2 IA and Hartly 1 IA. Harvey Cornelius is a son of Harvey Putnam and Rebecca Steward and was born in Bethel, Windsor County, Vermont on October 19, 1825. He and Sarah were married January 1, 1850 in Cherry Creek, Chautaugua County, New York. His father Harvey was a son of Joshua Putnam and Lucy Lothrop. Harvey Senior was number 2664 in Eben's numbering system. He will be here in Iowa until his death June 17, 1909. Sarah will die here February 5, 1911.

BENJAMIN P. (PERKINS) PUTNAM Cleona Township, Scott County

He is 28 OH a farmer, Lydia W. is 26 VA. He is Benjamin Perkins Putnam. He was with his father Douglas Putnam in Hamar, Washington County OH in 1840 and 1850. He married Lydia Edgerson in Marietta, Washington County, Ohio on February 14, 1860 and headed out here to farm. His grandfather was a part of the original Ohio Company coming from Massachusetts. Douglas was number 1572 in Eben's books, Ben was number 3241.The line goes back through General Israel.

CHARLES E. (EDWIN) PUTNAM Davenport, Scott County

He is a lawyer 34 NY, Mary Louisa Duncan his wife is 26 PA. There are several boarders there as well. There should be some kids, as in 1870 they are still here and have, among others, 4 children born before 1860. He is a son of Benjamin Risley Putnam from Saratoga, New York. Ben is number 1381 and Charles number 2976 in Eben's books. Charles passed the bar in New York and went to Warren County, Georgia to join his brother Gideon there in the 1840s. He then moved to Illinois and then to here. He'll be around all his life.

FRANK PUTNAM Davenport, Scott County

He is 35 ME, his wife is simply listed as 'Mrs.', she is 30 ME, Frank Jr. 4 IA and Virginia 2 IA. Anyway, he is Franklin Reed Putnam, a son of John Putnam (1884) and Mary Herrick and was born in Wilton, NH October 31, 1823. He was in Bangor, Maine in 1850, but that was not where he was born. He will be here the rest of his life, which probably won’t be long as he will die here December 28, 1876.

MANDAN & JULIUS PUTNAM Davenport, Scott County

She is Mandana Putnam 39 VT, Julius Putnam 32 VT. They are sister and brother. They are living with Edwin (OH) and Elizabeth (VT) Fry. She will still be here in 1870 and spells the name Mandan. Julius will be gone. They are children of Daniel Putnam (number 1202 in Eben Putnam's books) from Bethel, Vermont. Their sisters Alma Putnam and Caroline Gay are nearby in Black Hawk County, Iowa. The parents didn't venture west, but the kids sure did. For what it's worth, their brother Daniel Sumner Putnam is in Freemont, Lake County, Illinois and will be there past 1900.

PHILIP PUTNAM Blue Grass Township, Scott County

He is 25 NY, a house carpenter, and boarding here.

JACOB G. PUTMAN Washington Township, Washington County

This is Jacob Junior from Hampshire County, Virginia. He is 37, Ellen Emundson is 37, Rachel 17, Stacy Ann 15, Jacob 13, Thomas 11, John 9, Hannah 7, Charles 5 and Ellen 1. Also there is his mother Rachel 78. She had remarried as her name was listed as Rachel Cresap. Charles Cresap had died in the early 1850s, and she joined her son. Everyone was born in Virginia, except Charles and Ellen who were born in Iowa. A German family.

WILLIAM PUTNAM Wright Township, Wayne County

William Marion is, a farmer, 34 IN, Mary Jane Hayes, his wife, 30 IL, Florence 6 IN and Mary Alice 2 IA. He is a son of Joseph Putman and Polly Hackelman. He was born in Fayette County Indiana, and was with the family in Rush County, Indiana in 1850. Joseph was a son of James Putman and Mary Collins from Culpeper County, Virginia via Pendleton County, Kentucky and a son of John Putman of Culpeper County. He is 80, born in Prussia. Quick note, Germany didn't become Germany as such till well into the 19th Century. Before that it was a series of separate feudal states. Prussia was one, Bavaria another, and so on. His son, I guess, William pops up here as well in 1870.

He is a son of Benjamin and Melvina Putman from Missouri. He is 25 IN, Mary E. is 20 OH, Joseph 3 IA and Saffrona 1 IA. He married Mary Elizabeth Nelson here November 26, 1865. Southern Putman Branch.

CHAUNCY PUTMAN Washington Township, Appanoose County

He is listed as 50 MA, a farmer. His wife Abigail Raesin is 52 NY. Also in the household are: Susan Hendrickson? 29 NY, Frank E. Hendrickson, 15 IN, and Peter R. Hendrickson 9 IN. They were in DeKalb County, Indiana. Same wife but no kids. He had six of them back there.

JOHN G. (GLIDDEN) PUTNAM Chariton Township, Appanoose County

John is listed as 58 VT, a farmer. His wife, Thankful B. Putnam, is 62 VT. The children at home are: John A. (Abraham) 36 VT, a farmer, Anna 31 NY (his wife), and their son Luke 1 IA. Also in the household is George McCloud 27 WV, a farm Laborer. Thankful, his wife, is also a Putnam (cousin). She is a daughter of Abraham Putnam and Sarah Gill of Springfield, Vermont. She is listed as number 2580 in Eben's book. John, himself, is number 1185 in Eben's book. He was born February 3, 1811 in Springfield, Vermont. He was a son of John Putnam and Peggy Glidden from Charlestown, New Hampshire originally. John will be here until 1883 when Thankful will die. Then he will return to Vermont and will die there October 19, 1888 while playing the part of 'Farmer John of ye olden time' in a Harvest Festival Play. Gave it his all, I would guess. This line goes John G. > John > Timothy > Seth > Thomas > Thomas > John.

GEORGE GIDEON PUTNAM Fremont Township, Benton County

He is living right next door to his father Gideon Putnam. He is Gideon's eldest son. In 1860 they were in Linn County, but now are here and will be in 1880. Anyway, George is 39 MA (NH in 1860, MA in 1880), Martha Ann Blackstone, his wife, 36 ME, George 15 IA, Eddie 13 IA and Ernest 7 IA.

GIDEON PUTNAM Fremont Township, Benton County

He is still here and is now 69 NH, Sarah (Rice) 65 MA, William (William Skinner) 23 NH. Also there is his daughter Clara Margaret Blackstone 26 NH and her husband Benjamin B. Blackstone 28 MO.

JACOB PUTMAN Homer Township, Benton County

He is 57 NY, Theodosia 42 PA, Allison a son 21 IA, and William 15 IA. He was in Scott County in 1850 and missing in 1860. Probably Dutch, but I just don't know for sure. They are in Jewell County, Kansas by 1880.

W. S. (WILLIAM SKINNER) PUTNAM Freemont Township, Benton County

I have looked twice and cannot find such a listing on the indexed page. At any rate, he would be Gideon's son who was here in 1850 and 1860. He is listed also with his parents, so this seems to be a dual listing, or he was carried over onto the next page. But it is William.

ALMA PUTNAM Cedar Township, Black Hawk County

She is 41 VT living with the Jeremiah Gay family also from Vermont. Caroline Gay is her sister. They were all here in 1869. The gals are daughters of Daniel Putnam of Bethel, Vermont.

JOHN PUTNAM Big Creek Township, Black Hawk County

He is 3 OH and living with Joseph and Frances Hill and A. J. and Cassie Cushman. His brother Frank 1 OH is there too. They are here in 1880 and we see then that Cassie is their mother and is from Ohio. I think Joe Hill is her brother. They came out here very recently and she married Andrew Cushman here. They are here in 1880 as well.

BENJAMIN PUTMAN Cass Township, Boone County

Benjamin Augustus is 38 VT, Samantha (Samantha Ellis Purinton) is 32 NY, William Augustus (listed Milton A. in 1860 and 1920) 12 IA, Ernest Judson 10 IA, Mary Amelia 8 IA, Ulysses Grant 6 IA, Lewis Orville 4 IA and Eva 1 IA. He was in Dallas County, Iowa in 1860. He's here in 1880, and will die here June 14, 1896. Samantha goes into the 1900, and will die here January 7, 1913. See 1860 for his lineage.

PETER PUTNAM Hazelton Township, Buchanan County

The son of Jacob D. Putnam and Hannah Lewis. They are Dutch from Montgomery County, New York. Peter is listed as 27 NY (born in Cayuga County, New York), a farmer. His wife, Alice (Alice S. Teague), is 22 ENG (Yorkshire, England). The children are: Charles 3 IA, and Cora 6 months old IA.

FLETCHER C. (CARTER) PUTNAM Beaver Township, Butler County

Fletcher is listed as 40 VT, a hotel keeper. His wife, Roxana (listed Sarah in 1860), is 30 NY, a hotel landlady. There were four other men enumerated in the household, as tenants. They were here in 1860. He is a son of Fletcher and Adeline Putnam of Grafton, Windham County, Vermont. After leaving Vermont, the family moved to Delaware County, New York and then to Wayne County, New York where this guy was in the 1850 New York Census. In 1857 the family was in Minnesota, and in 1860 Fletcher was here in Iowa.

ALBERT PUTNAM Sheridan Township, Carroll County

He is 27 NY, Electa Ann Brown is 25 IN, Mary L. 4 IA and Henry C. 2 IA. They will be in Guthrie County, Iowa in 1880, and in Custer County, South Dakota in 1900. His name is Albert Calvin Putnam and was born in New York on December 16, 1842 according to an entry in the IGI. His wife is Electa Ann Brown. Her brother John W. Brown 23 IN is with them. He looks to be the son of Perley Putnam (2850) from Lowville, Lewis County New York. He was home there in 1850 and 1860.

WILLIAM PUTMAN Afton Township, Cherokee County

He is 54 PA and has Mary 14 CAN and John 27 CAN with him. He is a son of John W. Putnam and Minerva Scott from Erie County, Pennsylvania. He was married to Rachel Scott who must have died recently. They were in Clinton County, Iowa in 1850, and in Rock Island County, Illinois in 1860. In 1880 he is in Baker County, Oregon with his daughter Mary who has married Daniel Patterson. Young John will be here in 1880.

SYDNEY J. PUTMAN Girard Township, Clayton County

He is 37 NY, Lizzie 31 NY, Clarence 11 PA and Hattie 2 IA. They are living in a hotel. He may be a son of Sydney Putnam of Madison County, New York (number 2348 in Eben's book), but I don't have a listing of his children. I don't find them in Pennsylvania in 1860.

JOHN PUTNAM Clayton Township, Clayton County

He has been here since 1847. He is now 54 VT, Rachael Philbrick, his wife, 36 IL, David 18 IA, Esther 17 IA, Alfred 15 IA, John 12 IA, Rosella 10 IA, Perkins 6 IA, May 3 IA and Eliza 1 IA. John will die here in 1874. Rachel will remarry A. S. Constantine and be with him and the kids in Bon Homme County, South Dakota in 1880. See that listing, because the story then continues on into Missouri.

ALFRED PUTMAN Clinton, Clinton County

He is 35 MA, a railroad brakeman living in a hotel. He is Alfred Walter Putnam, son of Alfred Putnam & Mary Page from Danvers, Mass.  Alfred is/was married to Madeline Louisa Black, who by the way, in 1870 is in Danvers.  Alfred will die October 20, 1874, in Cedar Falls, Black Hawk County, Iowa in a railroad accident.

He is 23 IL, a tailor, living in a boarding house.

He is 12 WI and living with the Goodwin family.

EARL PUTNAM Union Township, Dallas County

He is 45 NY, a farm worker. His wife, Charity, is 40 NY. The children are: Resina, a son, 21 NY, works on farm, Lorenzo 20 NY, works on farm, James 18 NY, works on farm, John 15 NY, works on farm, Lorain 14 NY, Earl 8 IL, William 5 IL, and Mary 3 IL. Also in the household is Milo S. Briggs, 21 IL. I can't find him in New York in 1850.

RICHARD PUTNAM Van Meter Township, Dallas County

The listing is under Richran, but it looks like Richard (possibly), but in 1880 (in Madison County, Iowa, the place with the Bridges) it is listed Rethvan or Rethran so I have no idea what the real name is. Maybe he lisps. He is listed as 32 OH, a nurseryman. His wife, Tamer, is 22 OH. There are no children.

DANIEL T. (THOMAS) PUTMAN Davis County

He is Elijah's son. He is 48 IL, Jennette Roundey is 43 NY, Giles 19, Miles 17, Thomas 15, Virgil 14, Horace 12, John 9 and May 4. All the kids were born in Iowa. Southern Putman Branch.

STILES H. PUTMAN Davis County

He is the above Dan's eldest and is living next door. He is 20 IA, Susan F. Wishand is 20 IA and they have an unnamed son born in May 1870. The son's name is Thomas, and he will be with his grandfather in 1880. Stiles and Susan were married here November 25, 1869. They are gone in 1880, but in 1900, Stiles is back with his father Daniel Thomas. Don't know what happened. Southern Putman Branch.

She is Elizabeth Duff, the widow of Elijah Putman. She is 68 KY and living with John and Elizabeth Ellis. Elizabeth Jane is her daughter, she is 40 IL, John Ellis is 48 OH. Southern Putman Branch.

Listed as James N., Jasper Newton Putman is a son of Elijah and Elizabeth. He is 26 IL, Eliza Jane Grant is 22 OH and they have Delia 3 IA and Henry 1 IA. Southern Putman Branch.

He is listed as Thurlton, but he is Fulton Putman, another one of Elijah's kids. He is 34 IL, Nancy Brennan is 29 KY, Vernon 12 IA, Eva 11 IA and Ettie 5 IA. Fulton is a cabinet maker. Southern Putman Branch.

JOHN PUTMAN Eden Township, Decatur County

He is 54 NY, Mary Meek 53 OH, Samuel D. 23 OH, Sylvia 18 OH Lenora 17 OH, Mary E. 16 OH and David M. 9 MO. He was part of that huge family in Huron County, Ohio in 1840, 1850. In 1860 they were in Mercer County, Missouri and are now here. John was born in Otsego County, New York, and was a son of David and Mary Putman from Madison County, New York. David was a son of George Putman and Mary Ferguson of Montgomery County, New York. Dutch folks.

FLORENCE & IRENA PUTNAM Prairie Township, Delaware County

Florence is 9, Irena 2 both IA, living with Edwin and Margaret Smith. Maggie may be their mom. Margaret probably had married one of Simeon's sons, John or Orlando.

HENRY PUTNAM Delaware Township, Delaware County

He is Henry Harold Putnam. He is 37 NY, Elvira Stanclift his wife is 32 NY. They will be here in 1880 and in 1900 with a family. He is a son of David Pease Putnam and Nancy Alcott and was born January 6, 1832 in Lee, Oneida County New York. He will die here in Delaware Iowa on May 31, 1910. His dad was from Connecticut. Elvira is the daughter of John and Rhoda Stanclift. She was born September 12, 1837 in Collins, Erie County New York and then came out here to Delaware County with her folks in the 1850s.

IRENA PUTNAM Prairie Township, Delaware County

She is 4 IA and living with her sister Florence 9 IA at the home of Edwin and Margaret Smith. Margaret might be their mommy as I mentioned earlier.

SIMEON W. (WALKER) PUTNAM Delaware Township, Delaware County

Simeon is listed as 63 ME, a gardener. The occupation of gardener, was simply a term for being retired with nothing better to do than putter around the garden. Also in the household is Cornelia Rhodes 63 ME, a housekeeper, and Margaret Nethercut 40 IRL, a seamstress. He was married here in 1860 and in DeKalb County, Illinois in 1850 and in Kane County, Illinois in 1840. Look back in 1860 to see who he is. Now, the Clornelia Rhodes gal is his wife Cornelia Rhoda Watson. I had thought she had died, but they both turn up alive and well in Wausau, Wisconsin in the 1880 at age 71 each.

He is a banker, 39 OH, Louisa R. Ruble 33 IA, Fred A. C. 13 IA and Emily S. 5 IA. I don't find them in 1860. He will be widowed here with Emily in 1880.

LUCIEN PUTNAM Fairfield Township, Fayette County

He is 46 NY, a farmer, Cynthia 41 NY, Helen 23 NY and Alfred 18 NY. He is a son of Edward Putnam, and his first wife Rachel Horton of Grafton, Vermont. Lucien was born in Warsaw, Wyoming County, New York. They were in Winnebago County, Illinois in 1860. His brother Henry is also here in Iowa. See that earlier listing for this lineage. This is a Massachusetts family originally.

He is 50 VT, Mary Jane Wilkins, his wife, 36 NY, Clara 15 WI, Emma J. 13 WI, Arabell 8 WI, Cora M. 5 WI, Mary 3 WI. He is a son of Daniel Putnam (1834) and Rebecca Jane Carleton from Massachusetts and was with them in Rock County WI in 1850.

WILLIAM C. PUTMAN Rockford Township, Floyd County

He is 43 NY, Sarah F. 24 IL, David N. 9 WI, Homer L. 7 WI, Charles W. 5 WI and George W. 1 WI. He looks to be the son of Jacob Putman and Hannah Lewis from Cato, Cayuga County, New York. He was there in 1850. I don't find him in Wisconsin in 1860, but it looks as if he was there. They are in Lancaster County, Nebraska in 1880. Dutch family.

This is John Marion Putman, son of George Putman and Charlotte Crosthwait from Fulton County, Illinois. He is 31 IL, Sarah Miller is 20 VA and they have Mintie 1 year old born back in Illinois. He will die here in 1874. Sarah and the kids will return to Fulton County and she will marry Henry Newton there. In 1880 she and her (by then) 3 kids will be in Putman Township, Fulton County. He is Elijah's son Greene Putman. He is 35 IL, his wife Mary Kelsey is 24 IN, then his kids Frank 14 IA, Jane 13 IA, Tilford (listed as Alford) 11 MO (born in the spell they were in Mercer County, Missouri), Clara 9 IA, Sarah 7 IA, Homer 5 IA, Anna 3 IA and an infant girl 3 months old, probably Mattie. I don't find them in 1880 yet, but they will be back in Mercer County, Missouri where both will live into the 1890s. Southern Putman Branch.

He is 30 NY and living with his brothers Norman and Irvin (Ervin). He will be married in Hardin County, Iowa in 1880. He is a son of Josiah and Lydia Shaw Putnam and was born in Bethany, Genesee County, New York. All these three guys were at home in 1850 and 1860. Josiah was a son of Peter Putnam (2^nd) from Andover, Windsor County, Vermont and from Danvers, Massachusetts before that.

He is 28 NY and living with his brothers Allen and Norman Putnam 32 NY. Look earlier at the listing for his other brother Allen Putnam, that listing will give Norman's lineage.

He is 32 NY, Julia Stratton is 30 NY, Lewis 9 MI, Alice 4 NY. Also there are his brothers Allen 30 NY and Irvin 28 NY. Norman will be here in 1880, Allen will be in Hardin County and Irvin simply split. He is a son of Josiah Putnam and his second wife Lydia Shaw from Batavia, New York.

DENNIS PUTNAM Eldora Township, Hardin County

Dennison (the way he was listed in 1850) is 22 NY, Josephine is 23 PA, W. L. (his full name is Lewis W. or W. Lewis, the W. probably being for William) 3/12 IA. Dennis lives next to William R. Putnam, who is his daddy. He'll be here still in 1880. See his father for this line.

WILLIAM R. (RODMAN) PUTNAM Eldora Township, Hardin County

He is 58 CT, a merchant, Martha L. is 46 NY, Lewis W. 18 NY, Thomas N. 15 NY, Frank 11 NY, Mary L. 16 NY and Fred 2 IA. Martha is his second wife, Mary died in the early 1860s back in Phoenix, Oswego County, New York. William is the youngest son of Jedediah Putnam and Lois Cheeseborough from Preston, Connecticut. He was born there January 22, 1812. He is number 2258 in Eben's numbering system. The line is William > Jedediah > John > Eleazer > Eleazer > John > John. Based on cemetery records, the family will move to Rockwell, Cerro Gordo County shortly. William will die there January 8, 1876, and Martha on March 17, 1897 (Saint Patrick’s Day). The son Frank will die there in 1881. The son Fred will be there in 1900 however. The other son, Thomas, will be in Carrington, North Dakota in 1900.

ERNESTUS J. PUTMAN Center Township, Henry County

He is the son of Ernestus Putman from New York (Dutch folks). He was born in Darke County, Ohio. He is 43 OH, a grocer, Sara Jane (Deem) 43 OH, John D. 20 OH. You can read all about this family back in the OHIO Section.

PHILIP D. (DODDERIDGE) PUTMAN Center Township, Henry County

He is 60 CT, his wife Isabel Carothers is 48 OH, Mary 21 OH, Horace C. 17 OH, Emma C. 15 OH, Alice M. 12 IA. He works in a woolen mill. I can't find him here in 1860 even though he obviously was. In 1850 Philip was in Washington Court House, Fayette County, Ohio and was a teacher, Mary was 2 and living with a McEastland family. I would guess Philip's first wife died about then, and Mary was with neighbors or possibly relatives then. He married Isabella J. Carothers in Fayette County, Ohio August 18, 1850. The family will remain here. Horace will later become the Sheriff of Henry County. Philip was born March 2, 1810 in Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut. His parents were Philip Putnam (Number 1847 in Eben's book) of Wilton, New Hampshire, and Anna Brown of Hartford, Connecticut. He is 33 NY, Anna 25 ENG, Alice 3 IA and Alva a son 1 IA. He lives next door to his dad David Putman.

DAVID PUTMAN Maquoketa Township, Jackson County

He is 55 NY, Malinda 54 VT and Jane 25 NY. His son (Charles, listed earlier) is nearby. The family was in Jefferson County, NY in 1850 and 1860. They will all be in Franklin County, Iowa in 1880.

JACOB PUTNAM Bellevue Township, Jackson County

He is a teamster, 56 NY, Eliza Wicks is 41 NY, George 17 IL, Oscar 12 IL, Martha 10 IL, Jacob 8 IL and Hannah 4 IL. They were in Carroll County, Illinois in 1850 and 1860. I believe that Jacob is a son of Philip Putman and Christina Lucretia Nobles from St. Johnsville, Montgomery County, New York. They are part of the Dutch Putman family.

JOHN PUTMAN Monmouth, Jackson County

He is 36 NY, a carpenter, Julia 33 NY, Edith 12 NY, Frank 18 (8?) NY and Laura 3 IA. I can't tell if these are children or siblings. Hard to read the ages properly.

REDING PUTMAN Jasper County

This is Bennett's son age 20 IL living with George and Elizabeth Sommerville in Fairview Township. He was here with his folks in 1860. They are back in Arkansas, Reding will be off to be with them later this year, marry and head to Kansas by 1880. Southern Putman Branch.

This is Reding's son and he will still be here in 1880. He is 49 KY, Elizabeth Drutz is 34 IL, Israel 12 IA, Mary 9 IL, Prudence 6 IL and Eliza 5 IL. Southern Putman Branch.

E. (EDWIN) G. PUTMAN Richland Township, Jasper County

He is listed as 42 VT, a farmer. His wife, Sarah A. Oswalt, is 36 OH. The children are: Josephine M. 16 IN, Joseph N. 11 IN, Mary Jane 9 IA, Nancy F. 7 IA, Rosetta 5 IA, D. A. a daughter 1 IA. The family was in Appanoose County in 1860 and will be in Clay County, Kansas in 1880. He is a son of Newton Putnam from Cavendish, Vermont and then of Wells County, Indiana. He will die in 1899 in Garfield County, Oklahoma.

MARY PUTNAM Buchanan Township, Jefferson County

She is 14 KS and living with William and Nancy Lowden.

HOWARD PUTNAM Scotch Grove, Jones County

He is a son of James Rufus Putnam, and in 1860 was in Dubuque County, Iowa. Howard is listed as 25 IA, a farmer. His wife, Margaret J. (Margaret Jane Kline), is 25 VA. The children are: Cynthia Ann 6 IA, John W. 4 IA, Adellia F. 2 IA, and Ada F. 4 months IA. Also in the household is John Grimm 30 VA, a carpenter. I find a marriage record in the IGI where Margaret is named Kline, but this John Grimm might be a brother, so I am not that certain here folks. If you look back in either Illinois or Indiana, you'll get this line. It goes back from James to Howard and then back to their Massachusetts roots.

LOUISA PUTNAM Scotch Grove, Jones County

She is 13 IA and living with Sam Peters and a bunch of others.

CHARLES (EDWARD) PUTMAN Mount Vernon, Linn County

He is 30 NH a store clerk, Mary (Mary Ellen Fawcett) 24 OH, Frank (Frank Howard) 3 IA and Carrie (Carolyn Elizabeth) 2/12 IA. He is Charles Edward Putnam, a son of Gideon and Sarah Putnam. He was born in Nashua, New Hampshire July 10, 1839 He served in the Civil War from here in Iowa, and rose to rank of Captain. His folks are still back in Benton County, Iowa.

HENRY PUTNAM Marion Township, Linn County

Henry Benjamin Putnam is listed as 37 VT, a farmer. Alice Child Lillie his wife is 24 VT, and Nellie is 10 VT. Also in the household are: Samuel Stokes, 21 PA, a farmer, and Steven Stokes, 26 PA, a farmer. He is a son of Hiram Babbitt Putnam and Sarah Ellis of Bethel, Windsor County, Vermont. He was at home with them in 1850. He was there with his folks in 1860. Alice will die here December 19, 1877. He will be back in Windsor County, Vermont by 1880 by himself, and be there in 1900 with his second wife Jennie Gifford who he will marry there on March 27, 1881.

John is listed as 40 NY, a wholesale peddler. His wife, Carry, is 22 MA. The children are: Frank 3 WI, Harry 2 WI, and Edgar 4 months WI.

SARAH PUTNAM Marion, Linn County

PETER PUTMAN Columbus City, Louisa County

He is 83 PA and the grandfather of James and Mariah Johnson. There was only two Peter born in Pennsylvania in the 1780s. Both were German as was every family in Pennsylvania up till the early 1800s. They descended from Andrew Butman of Germany and then Maryland. One Peter moved to Ohio and spent all his life there. The other 'headed West as a young man.' Gotta be him. He would be the son of John Putman and Sarah Schneider of Bedford County (where this Peter was born) and then Somerset County, Pennsylvania. I don't remember running across him since about 1815. No idea where he has been, but I'll check.

DANIEL B. PUTNAM Marshalltown, Marshall County

Daniel Baldwin is 78 VT, Sarah (Mrs. Sarah Curren) 72 NY. They live with Edwin and Phoebe Lockwood. Phoebe Ann is their daughter. In 1860 Dan and Sarah were here but living then with their son Nahum. See 1860 for the lineage.

NAHUM D. (DANIEL) PUTMAN Jefferson Township, Marshall County

Daniel Baldwin Putnams' son is still here. In 1880 he is here again. In 1900 they are in Logan County, Colorado. At any rate, he is currently 38 OH, Mary Spake is 37 OH, George 10 IA, Hiram Edgar 8 IA, Mary 4 IA and Grace about a few months old IA.

LIZZIE PUTTMAN Bloomington, Muscatine County

In looking at the writing, she is seems to be a Lizzie Pullman from Germany and shouldn't even be listed here. She may well be a Putman, but it was hard to tell.

He is 32 VT. He is a hotel clerk and also lives there.

WILLIAM PUTMAN Middle Fork, Ringold County

William Riley Putman is 31 NY, Mary Ellen Humphries 22 IL, Helen 1 WI and James 2/12 IA. He is a foreman. William and Mary were married here on November 14, 1867. He is a son of Riley and Hannah Putnam from Charlotte, Chautaugua County, New York. He was at home there in 1850. Riley Sr. was a son of Jesse Putnam and Lucy Coleman from Chester, Windsor County, Vermont.

CHARLES PUTNAM Davenport Township, Scott County

Charles Edwin is an attorney, and was here without kids in 1860, but they are all back together now. He is 45 NY, Mary (Duncan) 38 PA, Joseph Duncan 14 IL (he will die here in 1881), Charles Morgan 13 IA, John Caldwell 11 IA (he will die here in 1879, Henry St. Clair 9 IA, William Clement 8 IA, George Rockwell 5 IA, Elizabeth Duncan 3 IA, Edward Kirby 2 IA and Hamilton (don't have the second name on this guy) 1/12 IA. There is a Therese Putnam 17 NY nearby who might be a daughter, but she is not listed in Eben's books. See 1860 for exactly who he is. Charles will die here July 19, 1887, Mary on February 20, 1903.

MANDAN PUTNAM Davenport, Scott County

She is still here and still boarding with Edwin and Elizabeth (her sister) Ray (Fry in 1860). She is now 49 VT.

PHILIP PUTTMAN Bluegrass Township, Scott County

He is 34 NY, a merchant who is simply boarding. From the spelling of the names, looks like Phil might have a lisp or stutter a bit. He was born in Root, Montgomery County, New York, and never married. He is a son of Abraham Putman and Hannah Osborne from Tribes Hill, Montgomery County, New York. Dutch family.

THERESE PUTMAN Davenport, Scott County

She is 17 NY and a servant to James and Ann Calverwell of England. I have guessed her folks are Charles and Mary Putnam here in town. There are nine other kids in that household, and Therese would be the eldest (if she was part of that family) and had to get out of that zoo and on her own.

POLLY PUTMAN Otter Township, Warren County

She is 17 IN, a servant with Lewis Igo, a stock dealer.

RUFUS PUTNAM Richland Township, Warren County

He is James Rufus Putnam, son of Howard and was in Dubuque County in 1850 and 1860. He is 47 IN, Alice (his second wife) is 26 IA. In 1850 and 1860 he was married to Cynthia Ann Bradley, and she has died. He then married Rosina Alice Eastman. Note the gap between James and Cynthia. He must have remarried about 1863 or 1864. Anyway the kids are: Polly 18 IA, Asa 16 IA, Sarah 14 IA, James 11 IA, Cynthia 5 IA, Charles 3 IA and Mary 1 IA. They will add four more in the next ten years.

JACOB PUTNAM Washington Township, Washington County

This is Jacob Putman from Hampshire County, Virginia. I don't have all the details yet, but the family is German and was here in about 1856. They will be here for a long time to come. Some descendents still live here in the late 1990s. If you look in the regular IOWA Section, you'll get everything on this and the related families.

WILLIAM PUTMAN Wright Township, Wayne County

William Marion is a son of Joseph and Polly from Rush County, Indiana. He was also here in 1860. He is 44 IN, Mary Jane (Hayes) 40 IL, Florence M. 15 IN, Mary A. 12 IA, William F. 8 IA, Emma F. 6 IA and Charles M. 3 IA. Southern Putman Branch. He will be here until he dies December 19, 1873.

WILLIAM PUTNAM Corydon Township, Wayne County

He is 26 NY and a farm hand.

ELIJAH PUTMAN Douglas, Webster County

The son of Hannah and Mr. Putman (big help there). That's what it says in the IGI. The logical choice here would be that he is a son of William R. Putman and Hannah Waters of Clinton County, Michigan. In 1850 they had an Eliza the right age and a John who was the same age as the John living here. At any rate, Elijah is listed as 29 MI, a farm hand. His wife, Nancy, is 28 MI. In 1880, Elijah is back in Shiawassee County, Michigan with a second wife, Delia. Iowa was cruel to him it seems. Also in the household are: John Putman 27 MI, a farm hand, and I assume a brother, and Hiram Volkne 27 NY, and his wife, Mary, 23 NY. Mary is probably his sister.

JOHN PUTNAM Bloomfield Township, Winneshiek County

He is 54 NY, a farmer, Hannah 51 NY, Sereno, a son 26 NY, Edwin 22 NY and Nellie 9 NY. His son William lives next door. John is number 2853 in Eben Putnam's books. He is a son of Malachi Putnam and Sarah Blount. He was born January 2, 1815 in Lowville, Lewis County, New York. Malachi was from Winchester, Massachusetts. This line goes John > Malachi > Andrew > Elisha > Elisha > Edward > Thomas > John.

WILLIAM P. PUTNAM Bloomfield Township, Winneshiek County

He is 29 NY, Nancy Olney 28 NY, Arthur J. (John) 3 IA and Monroe W. 1 IA. His folks John and Hannah are next door and listed just above.

He is 33 PRUSSIA and a janitor. Probably glad to not be working in the Camps. He is probably a son of Bernard Puttmann from Prussia who was shown in 1860 here.

Melvina Baker is now 64 KY and lives with James and Ruth Cooper. She was with her husband Benjamin back in Linn County, Missouri through 1860. He died in the 1860s and she came out here with her son William. In 1900, she will be with her daughter Mary in Woods County, Oklahoma at age 84 and doing just fine.

EDWARD PUTNAM Postville, Allamakee County

He is Edwin Putnam 32 NY NY NY, his wife Martha 22 IA VA IN. They live with his twin sister Emma Reed 32 NY NY NY and her husband Joseph Reed 34 OH. He is a son of John and Hannah Putnam. They were in Winneshiek County in 1870.

J. (JAMES) R. PUTMAN Pleasant Township, Appanoose County

He is 31 born IN, Margaret is 29 PA and Anna L. 4 IA. He is James Putman a son of Benjamin Putman and Melvina Baker from Linn County, Missouri. Before they went to Missouri, they were in Monroe County, Indiana where James was born. Folks moved around a lot in those days. Southern Putman Branch.

The son of John Glidden Putnam. John A. is listed as 47 VT VT VT. He was born in Montpelier, Vermont on October 27, 1833. His wife, Annie, is 41 NY NY NY. The children at home are: Frances 9 IA, and John 7 IA. Also in the household are 1 servant and two laborers. He was here in 1870 with his folks, and will be here straight through the 1910.

JOHN G. (GLIDDEN) Chariton, Appanoose County

He is now 69 VT CT VT and Thankful 72 VT VT NH. John will be here until 1883 when Thankful will die. Then he will return to Vermont and will die there October 19, 1888. His son will still be here though.

GEORGE G. (GIDEON) PUTNAM Fremont Township, Benton County

George Gideon is listed as 50 MA (actually NH). His wife, Martha Ann Blackstone, is 46 ME. The children at home are: Earnest J. 17 IA, and Warren A. 7 IA. Also in the household is Martin Luther 27 IA, but his status is not recorded. He is a son of Gideon Putnam, and has been here for a while. Martha will die here April 26, 188. In 1883, George and his sons Ernest and Edward will head off to South Dakota. George will remarry a Mrs. Peck and will die in Artesian, Sanborn County, South Dakota November 5, 1907. Ernest and Edward will remain there, the son Warren will be here in 1900 and then move to Maryland in 1909 for the rest of his life.

ALMA PUTNAM Cedar Falls, Black Hawk County

She is 42 VT MA MA and lives with her sister Caroline Gay 58 VT MA MA and her husband Jeremiah Gay 58 VT and their family.

John is 13 OH PA OH, Frank 11 OH PA OH. They live with their mother Cassie Cushman 38 OH OH OH and her husband Andrew Cushman 36 IL. These two guys were here in 1870 living with her and her then brand new second husband Andy. No clue at all to her Putnam husband though.

He is a laborer 32 OH OH OH. He is a son of David Putnam Jr. and Hannah Munson. He was at home in 1850 in Hamar, Washington County, Ohio.

Harvey and Rebecca's son has been here since the 1850s. Ben will die here June 14, 1896, Samantha on January 7, 1913.

He is listed as 45 NY. His second wife, Catherine, is 40 OH. The children at home are: Min B. 8 MO, and Clara May 6 MO. He is a brother of Benjamin Augustus Putnam listed above, and a son of Harvey and Rebecca Putnam from Barnard, Vermont and then Cherry Creek, New York. He was in Pike County, Missouri in 1870 and will next be in Louisiana with a third wife Susan.

The son of Jacob D. Putman and Hannah Lewis, Peter is listed as 37 NY. His wife, Alice M. (Teague), is 29 ENG. The children are: Charles 13 IA, and Cora 9 IA. Also in the household are two servants and two boarders. They were here in 1870, and I gave the line back then. Dutch folks from New York.

ROXANNNA PUTNAM New Hartford, Butler County

She is 46 NY and lives with her son Franklin Thomas 29 NY. Strange listing, no one else is living here. Maybe she is a mother in law.

JAY S. (SAMUEL) PUTNAM Union Township, Carroll County

The son of Hezekiah Putnam of Chenango County, New York. Jay was home there in 1850. In 1860 the family was in Yorkville, Racine County, Wisconsin. Jay is listed as 32 NY. His wife, Rebecca Sutton, is 23 IA. The children are three sons: Rush B. 4 IA, Hezekiah I. 3 IA, and Orrie (Orin Jay) 2 IA. Hezekiah was a son of Nathan Putnam, number 2206 and his first wife, Martha Williams of Colesville, Broome County, New York and Fairfield, Connecticut before that. Jay will be in South Dakota in 1900 and then head to Oregon.

ADNEY PUTNAM Victoria Township, Cass County

Adney is listed as 35 VT MA VT. His wife, Emma W. Robinson, is 33 VT MA VT. The children are: Minny E. 11 VT, Walter M. 7 IA, and Ina M. 2 IA. They will be in Adams County in 1900. He is a son of Prentiss B. Putnam and Jemima Chase. He was born in Whittington, Vermont on May 12, 1844. He married Emma Robinson in Lee County and moved here in the early 1870s. This line goes back Adney > Prentiss > Levi > Phineas > Isaac > Edward > Thomas > John.

LOUIS (LEWIS W.) PUTNAM Geneses Township, Cerro Gordo County

Lewis is listed as 28 NY CT NY. His wife, Rena, is 29 IL. The children are: Eda 5 IA, and Charlie 1 IA. He is a son of William Rodman and Martha Putnam and was with the family in Hardin County in 1870. Rena and the two kids are in Bancock County, Idaho in 1900 and in 1920, Rena is in Crook County, Oregon with a son, Ray who was born in Wyoming in 1884, so they were there after leaving Iowa.

MARTHA PUTNAM Rockwell, Cerro Gordo County

She is now 56 NY RI NY, Thomas N. 24 NY, Frank L. 20 NY and Fred R. 13 IA. Her husband William Rodman Putnam died here in Rockwell in 1876. She will be around until 1897 when she too will die.

JOHN W. PUTNAM Afton Township, Cherokee County

He is listed as 37 CND CND CND. His wife, Sarah, is 36 CND CND IRE. The children are Henry 10 IL, and Eddie 5 IA. He is a son of William Putnam and Rachel Scott. They were in Rock Island County, Illinois in 1860 and he was here with his widowed father in 1870. His dad and sister are now in Oregon. Something will happen as by 1900 Sarah will be listed as Sarah Morrison and have a son Ernest (born in 1884) with her in Carroll County, Illinois.

Joseph is listed as 45 MA NY NY. His wife, Cora, is 46 MA. The children at home are: John 16 WI, Robert 14 WI, and Cora V. 9 WI. Also in the household is a boarder, George Bennett, 51 MS.

ALFRED PUTNAM Clayton, Clayton County

He is 23 IA and works on the Maker farm. He is the son of John Putnam who was here in 1870. His family has moved up to South Dakota. He will change his name from Alfred to Albert and marry a gal named Sarah. They will be in McDonald County, Missouri in 1900 along with the rest of the family. His dad has died here in 1878, his mother Rachel has remarried, and will be married again by 1900.

LEVI S. PUTNAM Clinton, Clinton County

He is 41 NY NY NY, Julia A. 54 PA PA PA, his wife. First time here. He is a son of Victor George and Sarah Ann Putman from Johnstown, Fulton County NY. That family was in Lee County, Illinois in 1870, but Levi wasn’t shown. He was at home though in 1850 in NY. He is a railroad engineer, so was probably on the track somewhere. Dutch folks.

FLORENCE A. PUTNAM Clinton, Clinton County

She is 24 IL VT VT and lives with her sister Anna Goodwin and her husband Coming Goodwin. They are daughters of Samuel Porter Putnam and Lydia Bailey. In 1860 they were in West Chicago, Illinois with their mother. Anna or Hannah was already married to Coming.

CHARLES PUTMAN West Side, Crawford County

He is 36 NY NY NY and works on the farm of Robert Evison from England. He looks to be a son of John Putnam (2853) from Denmark, Lewis County, N.Y. He was at home there in 1860, and in Henry County, Missouri in 1870. His folks were in Bloomfield, Winneshiek County, Iowa in 1870. His widowed mother Hannah is there now, and will be here herself in 1900.

ELIJAH F. (FULTON) PUTMAN Bloomfield, Davis County

He is now 47 IL SC KY, Nancy Ellis Brennan, his wife, 43 KY VA VA, Vernon 22 IA, Eva 20 IA and Henrietta 16 IA. Elijah’s son from Fulton County, Illinois. Been here most of his life now. Southern Putman family.

D. T. (DANIEL THOMAS) PUTMAN Soap Creek Township, Davis County

Daniel is now 58 IL SC KY, Jenette Roundey is 53 NY VT NY and still around are Virgil 23, Horace 21, John 18, May 14 and a grandson Thomas 10, all IA. Thomas is the only son of Dan's son Stiles who is missing now, but will be here in 1900 and 1910. Daniel will be around until he dies here August 11, 1902. Jenette will die here July 4, 1904. J. N. (JASPER NEWTON) PUTMAN Lick Creek Township, Davis County

Jasper Newton Putman is Elijah's son. He is 37, Eliza Jane Grant his wife 32, Delta 12, Harry 11, Willard 9, Olive 8, Duff 6, Maud 4, Anne 2 and Daisy 1. Southern Putman Branch.

ELIZABETH PUTMAN Wyacondah, Davis County

She is 81 SC SC VA and lives with her daughter Phebe Breeding 42 IL NC SC and her husband Alexander and their family. She is Elizabeth Duff widow of Elijah Putman. He died here in 1863, Elizabeth will hang in there until January 24, 1887 at almost 90.

MARY PUTMAN Eden Township, Decatur County

Mary Meek is the widow of John Putman from here (1870) and is 60 OH NJ OH. She lives with her parents George and Elizabeth Meek.

HENRY H. (HAROLD) PUTNAM Delaware Township, Delaware County

He is listed as 47 NY CT CT. His wife, Elvira Ann Stanclift, is 42 NY CT VT. The children at home are: Herbert H. 8 IA, Edward A. 5 IA, and Louis J. 2 IA. He is a son of David Pease Putnam and Nancy Alcott and was born January 6, 1832 in Lee, Oneida County New York. He will die here in Delaware Iowa May 31, 1910. His dad was from Connecticut.

EMILY PUTMAN Burlington, Des Moines County

She is 15 IA OH IA and boarding. She is a daughter of the James and Louisa who were here in 1870. She is also listed at home with her father.

JAMES PUTNAM Burlington, Des Moines County

He is widowed now that Louisa has died. He is 49 OH OH OH and has his daughter Emily 15 IA with him. He will die himself here January 31,1900. He is a son of Ernestus Putman from Darke County, Ohio. Dutch family.

DAVID A. (ARCHIBALD) PUTNAM Dubuque, Dubuque County

David A. is listed as 28 IL (WI in 1900). His wife, Mary, is 30 SCT. Their son, David A., is 1 IA. He’ll be here through 1900. He is a son of George Putnam and Catherine Scleithe from Ohio, and was born in Tazewell County Illinois and then was with his folks in Grant County Wisconsin in 1860, whole family missing in 1870 and now he is here just married in 1880. They are here in 1900 through 1920.

DANIEL PUTMAN Rockford Township, Floyd County

Daniel is listed as 60 VT MA NH, a laborer. His wife, Mary Jane Wilkins, is 47 NJ NJ PA, a laundress. The children at home are: Cora 14 WI, and Leota 7 IA. They were here in 1870. In 1860, they were in Bradford, Rock County, Wisconsin. Daniel is number 1834 in Eben's scheme of things. He is a son of Daniel Putnam (1834) and Rebecca Jane Carlton Newbury, Orange County, Vermont where this Dan was born. This line is Daniel > Daniel > Daniel > Amos > John > Nathaniel > John.

ANNABELL PUTMAN Rockford, Floyd County

She is 18 WI VT NJ and a servant on George Wyatt’s farm. She is a daughter obviously of Daniel and Mary Jane here in town.

Charles is listed as 33 NY NY VT, a farmer. His wife, Anna, is 33 ENG ENG ENG. The children are: a son Alvy (Alva) 11 IA, a son Ervy (Charles E. in 1900) 6 IA, and a daughter Harriett P. 4 IA. His folks, David and Melinda, are living next door.

DAVID PUTMAN Reeve Township, Franklin County

He is a farmer 67 NY GER HOLL, Melinda 63 VT MA MA, Jane 37 NY, and a granddaughter Alvira 13 IA NY ENG who is Charles daughter. The family was in Jefferson County, New York in 1850 and 1860 and in Jackson County, Iowa in 1870.
