1885 IOWA STATE CENSUS

 

This is a State not Federal Census, but the 1885 & 1895 are a huge help in filling the 20 year void in Federal Censuses from 1880 to 1900.

 

ADNEY PUTNAM  Carl Township, Adams County

He is a farmer 40 VT. His wife Emma Robinson is 37 VT and they have Minnie E. 16 VT, Walter A.11 IA, Ina M. 7 IA and Harry S. 4 IA. He is a son of Prentiss B. Putnam and Jemima Chase. He was born in Whittington, Vermont on May 12, 1844. He married Emma Robinson in Lee County and they were in Cass County in 1880, and moved here in the early 1880s. They are here in 1900 and Emma is widowed here in 1910. New England family.

 

WILLIAM PUTNAM  Douglas, Adams County

He is a miner 26 IL. His wife Rosa is 24 MI and they have Charles 7 MI and Franklin 3 IA. The Charles listed is really a stepson. Rosetta Earle had been married previously to a Sabins guy. Charles is a Sabins and listed so in 1900. William Addison Putnam is a son of Benjamin Putnam and Ellen Angeline Moore, and was shown at home in Champaign County, Illinois in the 1860 Census. His father, Benjamin, was born in New Hampshire, a son of Benjamin Putnam (1948) and Sarah Tenney. Rosetta is a second wife. He was earlier married to Eliza French in Stark County, Illinois. July 20, 1879. She was listed there alone with her kids from a previous marriage in the 1880 census. Must have been a divorce or he just left her. Only lasted a couple of months. He married Rosetta (Earle) Sabins in Cass County, Iowa January 26, 1880. They are in Lincoln County Nebraska in 1900 and 1910. About 1914, he took the family up into Tofield, Alberta, Canada and came back down here sometime in the mid 1920s. In 1930 they are back in Dawson County Nebraska. New England Family.

 

ELLEN PUTNAM  Washington Township, Adams County

She is 60 OH and has John 18 IN and James 31 IN with her. They live with David and Sarah Neal. Sarah 33 IN is her daughter. Ellen Angeline Moore is the widow of Benjamin Putnam. Benjamin was a son of Benjamin Putnam (1948) and Sarah Tenney. He was born June 20, 1819 in Lyndeborough, New Hampshire. They were in Champaign County, Illinois in 1860, and in Salem Township, Steuben County, Indiana in 1870. These three were in Poweshiek County in 1880.

 

EDWIN H. PUTNAM  Postville, Allamakee County

He is a painter 37 NY. His wife Martha is 26 IA and they have Eunice 3 IA and Harry 1 IA. He is a son of John and Hannah Putnam. He was at home in Winneshiek County in 1870 and here in 1880. John is number 2853 in Eben Putnam's books. He is a son of Malachi Putnam and Sarah Blount. He was born January 2, 1815 in Lowville, Lewis County, New York. Malachi was from Winchester, Massachusetts. They are here in 1900. There will be a divorce and Martha and the kids will be in Winneshiek County in 1910. Edwin will be in an Old Soldiers Home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1910. New England Family.

 

JOHN A. (ABRAHAM) PUTMAN  Chariton, Appanoose County

He is 51 VT a farmer. His wife Anna Briggs is 52 NY and they have Frances T. 14 IA, John P. 11 IA. There is a Louis Main 18 IN working for them. He is a son of John Glidden Putnam and Thankful Putnam (a Putnam cousin) from Springfield Vermont. They came out here in the 1860s. His mom died here in 1883 and his dad said to heck with this and went back to Vermont where he will die October 18, 1888 while playing the part of 'Farmer John of ye olden time' in a Harvest Festival Play. Gave it his all, I would guess.

 

JAMES R. PUTMAN  Cincinnati, Appanoose County

He is 36 IN and a plasterer. His wife Margaret Bell is 34 PA, and they have Laura 9 IA and Frank 3 IA. They were married here December 3, 1871. He is James Putman a son of Benjamin Putman and Melvina Baker from Linn County, Missouri. Before they went to Missouri, they were in Monroe County, Indiana where James was born. They are here in 1895, 1900 and on.

 

MARY E. PUTMAN  Franklin, Appanoose County

She is 34 OH and recently widowed. At home are Joseph 18 IA, Sophronia 15 IA, James 13 IA and Jesse 6 IA. Mary Elizabeth Nelson is the widow of William Putman. William was a son of Benjamin and Melvina Putman from Indiana and then Linn County, Missouri. They were in Appanoose County in 1870 and Adams County in 1880. He died about 1883. In 1900, Mary is in Woods County Oklahoma living with her father Joseph Nelson (then 76 OH). Southern Putman Family.

 

ERNEST J. (JUDSON) PUTNAM  Fremont, Benton County

He is 21 IA working on a farm. He is a son of Benjamin Putnam and Samantha Purinton from Boone County. He was home there in 1870 and 1880. He will marry Rosella Dugan in Poweshiek County on September 5, 1892 and they are in Boone County in 1900 and 1910 and in Polk County in 1920 and 1930.

 

ALMA PUTNAM  Cedar Falls, Black Hawk County

She is 54 VT and still single. She lives with her sister Caroline Gay 62 VT and husband Jeremiah Gay. Both Alma and Caroline are daughters of Daniel Putnam and Pamela French of Bethel, Vermont. Daniel is listed Number 1202 in Eben Putnam's books. Daniel died here September 7, 1859.

 

GEORGE J. (JACOB) PUTNAM  Cedar Falls, Black Hawk County

He is 31 WI. His wife Ida Mae Huyek is 34 IL, and they have Fred B. Hust 15 IL, Frank Hust 12 IL and May E. (Ethel) 5 IA. George is a son of Jacob Putman and Mary Jane Marr from Waushara County, Wisconsin. He was home there in 1860 and 1870. He was married in Grundy County, Iowa in 1880. He and Ida are here in through the 1920, and George is widowed here in 1930. Fred and Frank are kids from Ida’s first marriage. In 1880 they were both listed as 10 year olds with last name Hewitt which is probably right. Dutch family from New York.

 

JOHN & FRANK PUTNAM  Waterloo, Black Hawk County

John is 18 OH and Frank 16 OH. They live with their mother Cassie Cushman 42 OH and her husband Andrew Cushman 39 IL. These two guys were here in 1870 living with her and her then brand new second husband Andy. No clue at all to her Putnam husband though. In 1880 they said he was from Pennsylvania. They are all here in 1895 and John is married to Nellie Hubbard here in 1900. Don’t find Frank again though.

 

BENJAMIN PUTNAM  Peoples Township, Boone County

He is a farmer 55 NY, his wife Samantha Ellis Purinton is 47 NY, and they have Ernest 24 IA, Lewis 19 IA, Evie 17 IA, Benjamin 14 IA, Franklin 12 IA, Carrie 11 IA, and Cora 9 IA. Benjamin Augustus Putnam is a son of Harvey Putnam and Rebecca Steward from Barnard, Vermont and then Cherry Creek, New York. He was born September 31, 1830 in Wyoming County New York and married Samantha in Ellington New York October 11, 1854. They came straight out to Dallas County Iowa and were there in 1860, and have been here in Boone County from the mid 1860s on. He will die here June 14, 1896. Samantha goes into the 1900s, and will die here January 7, 1913.

 

MILTON PUTNAM  Peoples Township, Boone County

He is a farmer 27 IA. His wife Ida Theresa Sayles is 19 IL and they have Othie H. (Homer) 1 IA. Milton Augustus Putnam is a son of the above Benjamin and Samantha Putnam. He was born September 11, 1857 and married Ida March 24, 1883. They are here in 1895, and will all be in Tacoma Washington in 1900. Then they will get divorced and he will be back in Des Moines Iowa in 1910 and 1920 all by himself.

 

GEORGE PUTMAN  Byron, Buchanan County

He is 16 IA working on Robert Johnson’s farm. Looks like the son of George Putnam and Adelia Medbury from next door Linn County. He was home there in 1880 and not now.

 

PETER PUTMAN  Hazelton, Buchanan County

He is 42 NY. His wife Alice J. Teague is 36 ENG and they now have Charles 18 IA and Cora M. 15 IA. He is a son of Jacob D. Putnam and Hannah Lewis. He was born September 4, 1834 in Cato, Cayuga County New York. He married Alice out here February 17, 1866. She was born in Yorkshire England. They are here through 1900 in Jefferson County then. They are Dutch from Montgomery County, New York. In a book Genealogy of David Putman, I get "Peter Putman was born at Cayuga, N.Y., September 4, 1834.  In 1858 he went to Iowa, locating at Fairbanks, Buchanan County.  On July 15, 1861, after opening of the Civil War, he enlisted in the 5th. Iowa Regiment (Infantry), Co. C, and went to the front.  After his term of enlistment expired and having passed through all the dangers of war, he reenlisted at Larkinsburg, Alabama, in 1864, and remained in service until the last battle was fought and the Confederate Army surrendered." New York Dutch family.

 

HEZEKIAH PUTNAM  Coon Rapids, Carroll County

He is 68 NY a mechanic. His wife Aurilla Aylsworth is 59 NY and their daughter Hettie is 24 WI. Hezekiah is a son of Nathan Putnam, number 2206 and his first wife, Martha Williams of Colesville, Broome County, New York and Fairfield, Connecticut before that. He and he family have been in Racine County Wisconsin since the 1850s up through the 1880 census. They came over here recently and will go to South Dakota with his son Jay and family, and Hezekiah will die up there in 1893. New England Family.

 

JAY S. (SAMUEL) PUTNAM  Coon Rapids, Carroll County

He is a merchant 36 NY. His wife Rebecca Charlotte Sutton is 27 IA and they have Ky (Hezekiah) 7 IA, Orri (Orin Jay) 5 IA, Herbert A. 4 IA, John 2 IA and Lemuel less than a year old IA. Jay is a son of Hezekiah Putnam and Aurilla Aylsworth of Chenango County, New York. Jay was home there in 1850. In 1860 the family was in Yorkville, Racine County, Wisconsin and are now right here in Coon Rapids. Hezekiah is a son of Nathan Putnam, number 2206 and his first wife, Martha Williams. Jay will be in Custer County South Dakota in 1900 and 1910, and then head to Salem, Oregon by 1920. New Englanders.

 

JAMES PUTNAM  Cass Township, Cass County

He is 25 IA. His wife Eliza Jane Sexton is 26 IA and they have two daughters Marion 4 IA and Jessie 1 IA. He is James Rufus Putnam Junior, a son of James Rufus Putnam and his first wife Cynthia Ann Bradley. He was born in Dubuque County March 10, 1859 and was with the folks there in 1860 and in Warren County in 1870 and 1880. They are here in 1900 and Eliza will die September 15, 1904. He will marry Ulrica Thulin from Sweden here in 1905. They are here in 1910 and on. He will die in Griswold Cass County December 27, 1942 at age 83. Christmas was just too much that year. Ulrica will die here December 30, 1935 also after a hectic Christmas I guess.

 

WILLIAM PUTMAN  Fairfield, Cedar County

He is 24-26 OH single and working on a farm. The age is VERY hard to read.

 

ALBERT C. (CALVIN) PUTNAM  Spring Township, Cherokee County

He is a farmer 42 NY. His wife Electa Ann Brown is 39 IN. They have Della A. 11 IA, Charley A. 9 IA, George L. 3 IA and Harry O. 1 IA. Kids were all born in Guthrie County where they were shown in 1880. He is a son of Perley Putnam (2850) and Prudence Allen from Lowville, Lewis County New York and Vermont before that. His name is Albert Calvin Putnam and was born in New York on December 16, 1842. He was at home there in 1850 and 1860. They are in Cherokee County in 1885 and by 1900 in Custer County, South Dakota. New England family.

 

LEVI S. PUTMAN Clinton, Clinton County

He is 46 NY and his wife Julia Ann is 60 NY. He is a railroad engineer as he was here in 1880. They were here in 1880 and are through 1900. He is a son of Victor George and Sarah Ann Putman from Johnstown, Fulton County, New York. He was at home there in the 1850 Census. New York Dutch Family.

 

EFFIE E. PUTNAM  Adel, Dallas County

She is 9 IA and lives with Daniel 60 OH and Elizabeth Nealley 61 OH who I think are her grandparents. In 1880 she was with her folks, Rethran (?) and Tamar Putnam in Madison County. They were here in Davis County in 1870 and Effie was born here. I think the Nealleys are Tamar’s parents. They were all from Ohio.

 

ELIJAH F. (FULTON) PUTMAN  Bloomfield, Davis County

He is 51 IL a farmer. His wife Nancy Ellis Brennan is 46 KY. They have at home still Eva 26 IA, Henrietta 20 IA and a housekeeper Mary Taylor 37 OH. He is a son of Elijah Putman and Elizabeth Duff from Fulton County Illinois and then here. He was born here June 17, 1833 and will die in Bloomfield on February 27, 1914. Nancy died there August 24, 1910. Southern Putman Family.

 

ELIZABETH PUTMAN  Bloomfield, Davis County

Elizabeth Duff is the widow of Elijah Putman who died here in 1863. She is now 87 KY and is living with her married daughter Lucinda Caraway 46IL and husband Henry Caraway and their family. Elizabeth will hang in here until January 24, 1887 at almost 90 years of age.

 

VERNON PUTMAN  Bloomfield, Davis County

He is 27 IA a clerk in a grocery store. His wife Ella Spencer is 27 IA. They are living with her widowed mother Evaline Spencer 68 PA. He is a son of Elijah Fulton Putman and Nancy Brennan from here. They are in Washita County, Oklahoma in 1900, and in Pawnee County, Oklahoma in 1910. They are in Los Angeles in 1920 and 1930 and he owns a retail grocery store in Glendale. Southern Putmans.

 

ABIGAIL PUTNAM  Fabius, Davis County

She is 69 NY and lives with a Vanderkirk family. She is Abigail Raesin and was married to Chauncy Putnam from Massachusetts. They were in DeKalb County Indiana in 1860 and Appanoose County Iowa in 1870. No ideas yet who he was.

 

JASPER N. (NEWTON) PUTMAN  Lick Creek, Davis County

He is a farmer 41 IL, Eliza Jane Grant his wife 37 OH, Della 17 IA, Harry 15 IA, Willard 13 IA, Olive 12 IA, Duff 10 IA, Maud 9 IA, Anne 6 IA, Daisy 4 IA and Clyde 2 IA. He is a son of Elijah Putman and Elizabeth Duff from Fulton County Illinois and then here. Jack as he was called was born on June 2, 1843 in Fulton County. He married Elizabeth Jane Grant here on November 5, 1867. Jasper or Jack died September 8, 1907 and is buried in Lick Creek, Iowa. Elizabeth is widowed here in 1910 and 1920 and is in Los Angeles in 1930 with her daughter Olive at age 82 OH. His dad Elijah was my Reding Putman’s brother and both were sons of Daniel Putman from South Carolina. Southern Putman Family.

 

HENRY H. (HAROLD) PUTNAM  Delaware Township, Delaware County

He is listed as 52 NY.  His wife, Elvira Ann Stanclift, is 47 NY. The children at home are: Herbert H. 13 IA, Edward A. 10 IA, Louis J. 6 IA and Edith E. 4 IA. He is a son of David Pease Putnam and Nancy Alcott and was born January 6, 1832 in Lee, Oneida County New York. His dad was from Connecticut. Elvira is the daughter of John and Rhoda Stanclift. She was born September 12, 1837 in Collins, Erie County New York and then came out here to Delaware County with her folks in the 1850s.

 He will die here in Delaware Iowa May 31, 1910.

 

DAVID A. (ARCHIBALD) PUTNAM  Dubuque, Dubuque County

He is a grocer 34 WI, his wife Mary Ann is 36 SCOT and they have Archie (David Jr.) 6 IA, Harry 2 IA and Florence 1 IA. They are here in 1895 and 1900. Then Mary will die and he will marry Nellie White in 1908, and be here in 1910 and 1920. Anyway, he is a son of George Putnam and Catherine Scleithe and was born in Tazewell County Illinois and then was with his folks in Grant County Wisconsin in 1860, whole family is missing in 1870 and then he was here just married in 1880. They are here in 1900 through 1920. His second wife Nellie is widowed here in 1930

 

MARION PUTMAN  Dubuque, Dubuque County

He is 28 IA, his wife Hattie 24 IA and they have Leona 1 IA. He is William Marion Putnam, a son of George Putnam and Catherine Scleithe, and was born about the time his folks moved from Tazewell County, Illinois to Grant County, Wisconsin. He was there in 1860. He will be here with Harriet in 1900 and 1910 and then by himself here in 1920. Dutch Family out of New York.

 

ELLIOTT PUTNAM  Fairfield, Fayette County

He is 33 IL single and working on James Flower’s farm. He is Alfred Elliot born in Warsaw, NY December 9, 1851. He is a son of Lucien B. Putnam and his first wife Esther Foster. He is shown there in Fairfield, Fayette County, Iowa in 1870. He will marry Caroline Nus on April 27, 1887, and they are in Clayton County in 1895 and 1900. They will be back here in Fayette County in 1910 and 1920. New Englanders.

 

LUCIAN PUTNAM  Fairfield, Fayette County

He is a farmer 61 NY, His wife Cynthia Crosby is 56 NY and they have Estelle 11 IA. He is a son of Edward Putnam, and his first wife Rachel Horton of Grafton, Vermont. Lucien or Lucian was born in Warsaw, Wyoming County, New York. They were in Winnebago County, Illinois in 1860 and here by 1870. Cynthia will die here in 1889. He then married a widow, Mrs. Phoebe Thomas who died in 1896. He is living with her son George Thomas in 1900 in Buchanan County. He is 76 then and didn’t make it to 1910. New England Family.

 

AMOS W. (WHITNEY) PUTMAN Charles City, Floyd County

He is 43 WI and there is a Jennie Putman 32 WI boarding in the same house who is his wife. He is a traveling salesman. He is a son of Aaron Putnam and Elvira Rosina Smith from Vernon, Waukesha County Wisconsin. He was born there October 19, 1841. His dad was a son of Jonathan Putnam and Abigail Burton from Wilton, New Hampshire. Jonathan is number 1845 in Eben Putnam’s book. I don’t find Amos again.

 

AZOR PUTNAM  Floyd, Floyd County

He is a traveling salesman 42 NY and his wife Jennie is 32 IL. They are boarding. Good Luck.

 

MARSHALL PUTNAM  Pleasant Grove, Floyd County

Marshall Danforth Putnam is listed as 31 MI, born in March of 1854. His wife, Betsey Jane Sneath, is 32 NJ, born in January of 1853. The children are: Della 6 IL, born in July of 1878, Frederick Benjamin 2 IA, born in March of 1883, George Washington, 1 IA, born in October of 1884. Marshall is a son of Benjamin Franklin Putnam and Alma Stone Johnson. He was born in La Grange, Cass County, Michigan on March 12, 1854. Betsy is the first of his three wives. This family was in Owen, Winnebago County, Illinois in the 1880 census, and here in 1895. They are in Pottawattamie County Iowa in 1900. He will then head to California and die in Pomona Los Angeles County in 1943. His line goes back from Benjamin to Uzziel Putnam and Mary Trask from New York, via Vermont and then Massachusetts before that.

 

D. PUTNAM  Rockford, Floyd County

He is 65 WI, his wife Margaret 55 WI, and Cora 12 IA. This is a weird listing. Probably Daniel Putnam and Mary Jane Wilkins. Ages are off, but they were here in 1880 and Mary is widowed here in 1895 through 1920. Daniel was a son of Daniel Putnam (1834) and Rebecca Jane Carleton from Massachusetts and was with them in Rock County WI in 1850.

 

CHARLES PUTMAN  Reeve Township, Franklin County

He is 39 NY, his wife Ann is 38 ENG. They have Alvira 18 IA, Alva 16 IA, Erva (Charles Ervin) 11 IA, Percival 9 IA. He is a son of David and Malinda Putman from Jefferson County New York. They were there in 1850 and 1860 and in Jackson County, Iowa in 1870. Dutch Family from New York.

 

ABRAHAM H. PUTMAN  Hamburg, Fremont County

He is 66 IN and his wife Elizabeth R. Duff is 64 MD and they have Julia 38 IA, Augustus 28 IA and Clara 11 IA. He is a son of Elijah Putman and Elizabeth Duff. Abraham was born on March 8, 1818. He married Elizabeth R. Moran (born in Maryland February 24, 1820) in Canton, Illinois on March 7, 1839. They were in Davis County, Iowa in 1860, and in Schuyler County, Missouri in 1870, and then off to Fremont County, Iowa by 1880. Elizabeth will die here August 31, 1896. He will be here with his son Howard in 1900 at age 82, and will die before 1910. Southern Putman Family.

 

HOWARD PUTMAN  Hamburg, Fremont County

He is 35 IA, his wife Emma Jane Headley is 27 IA. They have Pearl 10 IA, Mertie 8 IA, Minnie 6 IA, Otto 4, IA, Walter 2 IA and Lula less than a year IA. They are here through 1920 and he is widowed here in 1930. He is a son of Abraham H. Putman and Elizabeth Moran from Davis County, and grandson of Elijah Putman and Elizabeth Duff. Southern Putman Family.

 

GEORGE PUTNAM  Colfax, Grundy County

He is a mechanic 29 MA, his wife Nellie King is 27 NH and they have Roy 4 IA and should have Martha 1 IA who wasn’t listed. George William is a son of George Putnam and Martha Blackstone from New Hampshire. In 1860, he was at home with them in Kingston, Linn County, Iowa. George Senior was a son of Gideon Putnam from New Hampshire. He will stay here in Iowa and die in Madison County October 14, 1918. New England family.

 

AUSTIN H. (HERBERT) PUTNAM  Webster, Hamilton County

He is 31 MA a mechanic. His wife Ida May Lyfoire is 30 NH and they have Harold L. 1 IA. He is a son Israel Herbert Putnam (2021) and Sarah Caroline Putnam. They are from Danvers Massachusetts and were there in 1880 and will be back by 1900 and he is widowed there in 1920.

 

GEORGE PUTNAM  Concord, Hancock County

He is a bookkeeper 30 MA, single and boarding. He should be George Frederick Rice Putnam a son of Franklin Putnam and Mary Rice from Reading Massachusetts. Franklin was number 1810, a son of Joshua Putnam (748) and Betsy Baker of Houlton, Maine. George was born in Reading on June 24, 1854. He was with the family in Reading in 1860, and in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1870. He will marry Anna in Cook County, Illinois March 9, 1887. They are in Clayton County Iowa in 1900 and Bottineau County North Dakota in 1910 and 1920.

 

ALLEN PUTNAM  Eldora, Hardin County

He is 45 NY, his wife Phoebe Southard is 29 IA and they have Howard 5 IA, Erle (Earl) 4 IA, Helen 2 IA and Clara less than 1 IA. He is a son of Josiah and Lydia Shaw Putnam and was born in Bethany, Genesee County, New York. He was with a bunch of his brothers back in 1870 in Grundy County, Iowa, and just married to Phoebe in 1880 here in Hardin County. They are here in 1885 through 1910 and Phoebe is widowed here by 1920. New England family.

 

PHILLIP D. (DODDERAGE) PUTNAM  Center Township, Henry County

He is now a retired schoolteacher 74 CT. His wife Isabella Crothers is 64 OH and they have Horace C. 29 OH (express messenger) and Emma 26 OH a teacher. Also here is Isabella’s sister Anna E. Crothers 66 OH. Philip was born March 2, 1810 in Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut. His parents were Philip Putnam (Number 1847 in Eben's book) of Wilton, New Hampshire, and Anna Brown of Hartford, Connecticut. In 1850 Philip was in Washington Court House, Fayette County, Ohio and was a teacher. I would guess Philip's first wife died about then, as his daughter Mary was with neighbors or possibly relatives then. He then married Isabella J. Crothers in Fayette County, Ohio August 18, 1850. The family will remain here. Horace their son will become the Sheriff of Henry County. Horace lists himself now as being widowed and has a son Phil C. (Phillip Crothers) 4 IA with him. I don’t have his first wife’s name. He will marry Louise Magdfrau in 1892 and they are here in 1900 and 1910.

 

CHARLES PUTNAM  Crosses, Howard County

He is a painter 26 IA. His wife Clarinda is 20 WI and they have Olive less than a year IA. In 1860, he was here with his widowed mother Martha from Norway, so no ideas as to his dad except he was from New York or Canada and married Martha in Wisconsin in the late 1840s. They are here in Vernon Springs in 1900 through 1920 and his mother Martha is still with them in 1910 at age 82.

 

ROBERT PUTNAM  Des Moines, Jasper County

He is a farmer 62 KY, his wife Elizabeth Drutz is 47 IL and they have George 12 IA, Ella 10 IA, Josie (Phoebe J.) 8 IA, Delilah 4 IA. The kids were all born here in Jasper County. Robert was a son of Reding Putman (my gg grandfather) and his first wife Stacey Combs. He was born in Putman Township (named for Reding the first settler), Fulton County, Illinois on December 16, 1823, and made the trip to Arkansas with his family in 1836. He then went to Illinois where he married Elizabeth on May 27, 1857 in Morgan County Illinois. They were there in 1860 and here by 1870. Robert will die in Prairie City, Iowa May 30, 1892. Elizabeth is widowed here in 1895 and 1900. Then she and the kids are in Spokane Washington in 1910. Elizabeth will die in Spokane, Washington September 22, 1913. Southern Putman Family.

 

HOWARD PUTNAM  Monticello, Jones County

He is 40 IA and a foreman in a creamery. His wife Margaret Jane Kline is 40 VA and they have John 19 IA and Ada 15 IA. They were here in 1870 and 1880. He is a son of James Rufus Putnam and Cynthia Ann Bradley, and was born December 14, 1844. He married Margaret Jane Kline February 18, 1863. She will die here September 21, 1886, and Howard will marry Sarah Ann Livingston on January 12, 1888. They are here through 1920. Howard will die July 8, 1924 and Sarah on October 13, 1926. R. A. (RUFUS AUSTIN) PUTNAM  Monticello, Jones County

He is 60 MA single and boarding. He is Rufus Austin Putnam junior, son of Rufus Austin Putnam and Frances Highborn Porter of Fitchburg, Mass. He was born in March 1826. He will be here through the 1900 census. He never married.

 

SIMON PUTMAN  Jackson Township, Lee County

He is Simon Kenton Putman 47 OH and his wife Hulda P. Singleton is 46 IL. At home are Frederick 24 IL, James 11 IA, Frank 7 IL. He is a son of Elijah Putman and Matilda Kenton from Champaign County Ohio and the Brown County Illinois. Simon was born in Mad River Township Ohio on January 6, 1839. He served in the Civil War as a Lieutenant in the 3rd Illinois Cavalry. He married Huldah Singleton January 20, 1859 in Mount Sterling Illinois. She was born October 2, 1838 and died January 7, 1907. They were in Mt. Sterling in the 1860, and in Ray County, Missouri in 1870. They were back in Brown County in 1880 and here now and in 1895 and 1900. He died April 26, 1906 in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska. Southern Putman family.

 

FLORA & BERNICE PUTNAM  Cedar Rapids, Linn County

Flora is 16 WI, Bernice 7 IA. They live with Louisa Everette 35 OH. She is the widow of Fred Putnam from New York. In 1870, they were in Milton, Rock County Wisconsin. She was widowed here in 1880.

 

HAZEAL PUTMAN  Cedar Rapids, Linn County

He is a cooper 58 IL. His wife Lydia Miller is 57 OH. They have at home Charles 26 IL (a cooper like his dad. A cooper by the way makes barrels and stuff), Louise or Lois 25 NH who is Charles wife and they have Elsie just born IA. He is indexed as Israel, but is the son of William and Alla Putman. He was born on October 21, 1826. He remained in Fulton County, Illinois after the rest of the family went to Arkansas. He lived in Buckhart Township on the original farm of William and Allie. He was there during the Civil War as his sister Lavina went there to live while her husband was in a Yankee Prison. They were in McDonnough County, Illinois in the 1860s and then in Tazewell County Illinois by 1870 and here in Linn County Iowa by 1880. He will die here in 1891, Lydia in 1912. WILLIAM S. (SKINNER) PUTNAM  Cedar Rapids, Linn County

He is 38 NH, his wife Maggie 38 IN and Irene G. 17 IA. He is William Skinner Putnam, a son of Gideon Putnam and Sarah Rice. He was born in Nashua, New Hampshire. He was here in 1880 and was a teacher. I never new he was married. He was single here in 1880 and will be in 1895. Then by 1910 and 1920 he will be in an Old Soldier Home in Marshall County. Irene would be a daughter of Maggie in a prior marriage. This one didn’t work out as he is single again in 1895 and on.

 

CHARLES B. (BERNARD) PUTNAM  Marion Township, Linn County

Charles Bernard Putnam is listed as 42 MI.  His wife Esther Carroll is 40 NY.  The children are: Clarence 14 MI, Nellie 12 MI, Charles C. 9 IA, and Freddie O. 7 IA.  Also in the household is their stepson Loren A. Collins 14 MI. He was previously to Nettie Phillips who had been married to Albert Collins. This family was in Eaton County, Michigan in 1870. Charles will still be here in 1900, but will be married to a widow, Laura Smith. They were divorced and Esther is still in town, but in her own house. Charles is a son of Orlin L. Putnam and Caroline Brown. He was born in Clarendon, Calhoun County, Michigan. He was at home there in 1860 in Eckford, Calhoun County. His folks are from New Hampshire and then New York.

 

CHARLES E. (EDWARD) PUTNAM  Marion Township, Linn County

He is a bank clerk 45 NH and his wife Mary Ellen Fawcett is 38 OH. They have Frank H. 18 IA, Carrie E. 15 IA. He is a son of Gideon Putnam and Sarah Rice. He was born in Nashua, New Hampshire July 10, 1839. He served in the Civil War from here in Iowa, and rose to rank of Captain. This family was in Mount Vernon, Linn County in 1870 and in Marion, Linn County in 1880. He will be here until he dies in 1913. Mary Ellen will die the following year. He was in Marion Township in 1860 through 1880. They are in Rapids Township in 1900.

 

SARAH PUTNAM  Marion Township, Linn County

She is 48 IL and widowed. She is a nurse. Her daughter Laura is 18 IA. She has been widowed here since 1870. Can’t find her in 1860, but was probably in Wisconsin where her first son Martin was born in 1861. The husband was born in Ohio at any rate.

 

HENRY PUTNAM  Wheeler, Lyon County

Henry is listed as 53 CAN.  His second wife, Elizabeth Beaudette, is 38 CAN. They were married in Quebec in 1865. He was first married to Rose King and was here in Clayton County in 1860 with her. The children at home are: Mary L. 17 IA, Joseph L. 14 IA, Margaret A. 13 IA, Addie M. 11 IA, Alfred A. 9 IA, Lucy Ann 5 IA Charles C. 3 IA and Cecilia R. 1 IA. Based on the children's ages and birthplaces, Henry was here in 1870, but was not listed in the Index. Henry will die here in 1893, and Elizabeth will be widowed in Sioux County in 1900. The son Joseph will be in South Dakota by around 1910. Henry was born April 18, 1830 in St. Johns, Quebec just across the border from Vermont. He was born with the name Patenaude, and was listed as Henry Putnode in Westford, Chittenden County, Vermont in 1850. Rose was living two houses away at that time. Probably because there were several Putnams in Westford, he changed or had anglicized his name to Putnam sometime in the 1850s while in Vermont. Not a Putnam at all.

 

ISRAEL PUTNAM  Perry Township, Marion County

He is a tinner 26 IA and single. He was born in Jasper County May 16, 1858. He is a son of Robert Putman and Elizabeth Drutz from Jasper County. His dad will die in 1892 and Israel will be back with his mom in 1895. That’s the last I find him. Maybe died in the Spanish American War. Robert was a son of Reding Putman and Stacey Combs from Fulton County Illinois. Reding was my gg grandfather. Southern Putmans.

 

GEORGE PUTNAM  Jefferson, Marshall County

He is a farmer 25 IA and his wife Emma Lukehart is 19 IA. George is a son of Naham Daniel Putnam and Mary Spake from here. He will be here till he dies in 1917. Emma is widowed here in 1920.

 

NAHAM D. (DANIEL) PUTNAM  Jefferson, Marshall County

Spelled this was now but Nahum in 1880. Not sure which is right. Anyway, he is 52 OH. His wife Mary Spake is 51 OH. Edgar 23 IA and Grace 14 IA are at home. He is a farmer. He's been here a while, a son of Daniel Baldwin Putnam. He was born in Sandusky, Huron County OH, moved to Cass County MI where his dad used to live, and then the family came here in 1854. They are here in 1895, and then will go up into Logan County, Colorado and be there in 1900. They will then return here to Marshalltown, and both will die here in 1902.

 

GOYNE M. PUTMAN  Osage, Mitchell County

He is a farmer 63 PA. His wife Lavinia Babcock is 62 NY, and they have at home Florence J. 30 IL a teacher, Emmett 28 IL a musician, Herbert 18 IL, Mabel 18 WI. In 1850 and 1860 he was in Laona, Winnebago County, Illinois, which lies directly below Rock County, Wisconsin. He’s only moved a few miles since then. In 1850, he lived right along side his folks John W. and Minerva Putnam. He was born in North East Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania. In 1830, his folks are in Batavia, Genesee County, New York. They moved to Ontario, Canada and then to Illinois in the 1840s. By 1900, they will be in North Milton Precinct, Umatilla County, Oregon. New England Family.

 

HENRY EDSON PUTMAN  Osage, Mitchell County

He is 21 IL and a farmer. His wife Ella May is 19 WI, and they have Estelle less than a year IA. He is indexed Harry Adam, but looks like Henry or Harry Edson. At any rate, he is a son of Goyne M. and Lavinia Putman who are here in town too. He has been listed just as Edson up till now.

 

WILLIAM J. (JACKSON) PUTNAM  Ashton, Monona County

He is a farmer 65 VT. His wife Sarah Weaver is 60 VT. There is Gertrude Bowman 5 IL with them. He is a son of William Putnam (1694) and Esther Hubbard from Windham County, Vermont. He has been there through the 1870. He married Sarah Isabella Weaver in Rockingham Vermont in 1847. They have been in Peoria County Illinois from the 1870s through the 1880 census. New Englanders.

 

CHARLES F. (FRANCIS) PUTNAM  Soldier Township, Monona County

He is a farmer 26 MI. His wife Nancy Margaret Ballantyne is 21 IA and they have Ethel G. 4 IA and Elsie M. 2 IA. He is a son of Eri Carlton Putnam and Eliza Goodrich from here in town. New Englanders Massachusetts to New York to Michigan to here.

 

DENNISON PUTNAM  Omega, O’Brien County

He is a farmer 36 NY. His wife Josephine Boyles is 37 PA. They have Lewis 13 IA, Martha 9 IA, Edson 7 IA and his twin Addie 7 IA, Frank 4 IA and Thomas 1 IA. He is a son of William Rodman Putnam and his first wife Mary, He was born in Phoenix, Oswego County New York. The family came out to Hardin County Iowa in the 1860s. His dad was a son of Jedidiah Putnam and Lois Cheeseborough from Preston Connecticut. He is here in 1900 and 1910. He will die here in 1918, Josephine in 1921.

 

EDWIN PUTNAM  Garfield, Plymouth County

He is 51 VT and now widowed. He has Minnie 13 MO, May 11 MO. He is Edwin Josiah Putnam, a son of Harvey Putnam and Rebecca Stewart of Chautauqua County, New York. He was born September 14, 1832 back in Bethel, Vermont just before the family moved to Cherry Creek, New York. He married Lydia Fidelia Clark in New York on July 17, 1855. They moved out to Missouri about 1868. He was in Boone County Iowa in 1880 with a new wife Catherine who has died. I don’t find him in 1900, but he will be in Louisiana with yet another wife Susan in 1910. New England Family.

 

JOHN B. PUTMAN  Portland, Plymouth County

He is 20 IA a farmer. His wife Madeline is 23 IA. He would be the son of George Cornelius Putman and Adelia Medbury. He was home with them in Linn County in 1870 and 1880. George is a son of Barney and Margaret Putman from Mount Morris, Livingston County. This is a Dutch Family out of Montgomery County New York.

 

AUGUSTUS D. (DAVID) PUTNAM  Center Township, Pottawattamie County

He is a farmer and widowed as he was here in 1880. He is 52 NH. Still at home are Arthur L. 10 IA and Katie J. 7 IA. He also has a family of Haley people, and the widowed mother is his housekeeper. He is David Augustus Putnam, a son of George Putnam and Elizabeth Perkins, and was born in Charlestown, Sullivan County, New Hampshire. His brothers, George McIntire Putman and Lucius Putnam, are here in town too. He will be here in 1900 and die in the next decade.

 

LUCIUS PUTNAM  Center Township, Pottawattamie County

He is 45 NH and still single as is his sister Belle 35 VT. His widowed mother Elizabeth 75 NH is still with them. He is a son of George Putnam and Elizabeth Perkins. He was born in Charlestown, Sullivan County, New Hampshire. The family then moved to Orange County, Vermont by the 1850 census. In 1860 they were in Dixon, Lee County, Illinois and in Ogle County, Illinois for the 1870. They were here in 1880 and his dad had died sometime in the 1870s.

JOHN S. PUTMAN  Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie County

He is a teamster 27 IL, his wife Mary is 26 IA and they have Ida 6 IA. He is a son of Victor and Sarah Ann Putman from New York. He was born in Lee County Illinois in 1858 and was there in 1860 through 1880. In 1900 they were in Stanton County Nebraska. He and Mary are here in Council Bluffs in 1910 and 1920. John is widowed here in 1930. Dutch family originally from Montgomery County New York.

 

HARVEY C. (CORNELIUS) PUTNAM  Deep River, Poweshiek County

He is 59 VT a farmer. His wife, Sarah Ann Steward, is 55 NY.  The children at home are Katie 19 IA, Charles 16 IA, William 12 IA. His dad Harvey Senior 86 VT is living with them.  Harvey will be here in Iowa until his death June 17, 1909. Sarah will die here February 5, 1911. He is a son of Harvey Putnam and Rebecca Steward and was born on October 19, 1825 back in Bethel, Windsor County Vermont. His father Harvey was a son of Joshua Putnam and Lucy Lothrop. Harvey Senior was number 2664 in Eben's numbering system. According to Eben’s book, Harvey Senior died July 24, 1888 back in Cherry Creek New York, but I’ll bet it was more likely out here. New England family of course.

 

MERTON A. (ADELBERT) PUTNAM  Jackson Township, Poweshiek County

He is 27 IA born right here. His wife Alice Annette Blakely is 25 IL and they have Fred E. 1 IA. He is a son of Harvey Cornelius Putnam and Sarah Stewart. He was born in Poweshiek County and was there in 1860 to 1880 with his folks. They are in Plymouth County in 1895, Palo Alto County in 1900, and are in Mahaska County in 1910 and Keokuk County in 1920 and 1930. New England family out of Vermont.

 

WALTER & CLYDE PUTNAM  Redding, Ringgold County

Walter is 9 IA, Clyde 6 NE. They live with Robert and Sarah Hillhouse. Sarah Ockerman 29 IA is their mother. Sarah was married to Samuel Deloss Putman. He was a son of John Putman and Mary Meek. John was part of that huge family in Huron County, Ohio in 1840, 1850. In 1860 they were in Mercer County, Missouri and they were in Decatur County Iowa in 1870. John was born in Otsego County, New York, and was a son of David and Mary Putman from Madison County, New York. David was a son of George Putman and Mary Ferguson of Montgomery County, New York. Sam and Sarah were in Furnas County Nebraska in 1880. They returned to Decatur County, Iowa and he died there August 1, 1881. Sarah will be with her son Walter in Jasper County, Iowa in 1900. Clyde will be in Johnson County, Iowa in 1900 and in 1920. Dutch Family from New York.

 

PHILLIP W. PUTNAM  Blue Grass, Scott County

He is 50 NY single and boarding. He is a merchant and has been here since the 1860s. He never married. He was born in November 1837 in Root, Montgomery County, New York, and never married. He is a son of Abraham Putman and Hannah Osborne from Tribes Hill, Montgomery County, New York. Dutch family. He is here in 1900 too.

 

CHARLES E. (EDWIN) PUTNAM  Davenport, Scott County

He is a lawyer 59 NY. His wife Mary Louisa Duncan is 53 PA. They have Henry St. Clair 23 IA student, William Clement 22 IA a law clerk, George Rockwell 19 IA law student, Elizabeth Dunkin 17 IA student, Edward Kirby 15 IA student, Benjamin Risley 13 IA student. He is a son of Benjamin Risley Putnam and Eunice Morgan from Saratoga Springs New York. He was born there February 19, 1825. He is doing quite nicely. He is a lawyer, President of the Davenport Savings Bank, President of the Board of Education, President of the Academy of Sciences and lots of other nice things. He will die here on July 19, 1887, but his wife Mary will carry on the Arts and Science stuff and will be here going strong in 1900. New England family.

 

WILLIAM PUTMAN  Davenport, Scott County

He is a carpenter 26 IA. His wife Annie Gillian is 28 PA and they have Mary Frances just born here. He is a son of Abraham H. Putman and Elizabeth Moran of Bloomfield, Davis County. Abe was a son of Elijah Putman and Elizabeth Duff. Southern Putman family. They were here in 1885, and are here in 1900 and 1910. Anna Gillian, his wife, will die here in 1917, and he will die here October 15, 1935.

 

ANDREW PUTMAN  Winfield, Scott County

He is 28 IA and born here. But in 1880 he was single here and said he was born in Germany. His brother Francis is 26 IA. No ideas yet as to the folks. He will be married in Rock County, Minnesota by 1900, though kids were born here in Iowa in the 1880s. His wife Annie will be widowed with the kids in Richland County, North Dakota in 1910 and 1920.

 

HORACE PUTNAM  Sheridan, Sioux County

He is a farmer 34 VT and his wife Mary Burke is 35 NY. Children are Dennis 9 IA, Elizabeth 7 IA, George 5 IA, Mary 3 IA and Horace 1 IA. He is a son of Henry Putnam and Rose King. Remember Henry was born with the name Patenaude, and was listed as Henry Putnode in Westford, Chittenden County, Vermont in 1850. Rose was living two houses away at that time. He is 23 MS single and boarding. There are a couple of guys that would fit age wise, but 2 were married by 1882 and one went to Texas with his folks. Not sure.

 

PHILENA PUTNAM  Oneida, Tama County

She is now 85 NY still living with her daughter Lucinda Campney 42 PA and family. She is Philena Buck widow of William Witt Putnam from Bethel, Vermont. The family including Lucinda was in Erie County, PA in 1840 and 1850. That’s where Lucinda was born. New Englanders.

 

JONATHAN PUTNAM  Salt Creek, Tama County

He is a bible agent 51 NY. His wife Mary E. is 34 NY (age hard to read), and Laura C. 17 IA. John is a son of John Putnam and Sarah Maria Southwick from Essex County New York. He was married to Julia there in 1860 and here in Jackson County Iowa in 1870. In 1880 Julia was still there by herself and John has remarried. Laura was a daughter of his with Julia. New England family.

 

JAMES M. PUTNAM  Spring Creek, Tama County

He is a druggist 38 IL. His wife Harriet Maude White is 26 WI and they have Mabel J. 2 IA. Also here is Harriet J. Stearns 61 NY who is Maude’s twice widowed mother. He is a son of James Putman and Letha Darnell from Mount Sterling, Brown County, Illinois. He was born in March of 1851. They were at home in 1850, and then both of the folks died in the mid 1850s. He and his brother William Arthur were both taken in by Letha’s brother William Darnell, and were in Hancock County, Illinois in 1860. He was a farmer until 1877 when he became a druggist in Holland, Grundy County, Iowa. In 1881 he married Maud White daughter of Julian and Hattie White. Maud was born March 31, 1858 and she died November 23, 1904. James died January 9, 1913 in Lakefield, Minnesota. They are in Grinnell Township, Poweshiek County, Iowa in 1900. HENRY H. (HARRISON) PUTNAM  Benton Township, Taylor County

He is 44 VT. His wife Cornelia Ann Chamberlain is 36 NY.  The children are: Jason P. (Prentiss) 15 IL, Flora Belle 13 IL, Etta E. 12 IL, Irving E. (Ellsworth) 6 IA, Charles H. (Henry) 4 IA and Clyde C. (Chester) 1 IA. They were married in Amboy, Lee County, Illinois on November 18, 1868. Henry was born in Somerset, Windham County, Vermont on August 20, 1840. He was a son of Prentiss B. Putnam and Jemima Chase of Whittingham, Windham County. Prentiss' folks were Levi Putnam and Hannah Allen of Sutton, Massachusetts. They are here the rest of their lives. Henry will die here in 1911, Cornelia in 1928.

 

SIDNEY C. (CHASE) PUTNAM  Benton Township, Taylor County

He is a farmer 42 VT. His wife Josephine A. Smith is 42 VT and they have Cora A. 13 IL, Alta J. 12 IL, Edwin S. 9 IA, George E. 1 IA. He is a son of Prentiss B. Putnam and Jemima Chase of Whittingham, Vermont. He was born in Wardsboro, Vermont November 6, 1842. He was here in 1880 and probably in Lee County Illinois near his brothers in 1870. They are here in 1900 and 1910 and he is widowed here in 1920.

 

ASA PUTNAM  Palmyra, Warren County

He is 31 IA, and his wife Sarah Ellen Pyle is 32 IN. They have Charles E. 10 IA. Asa Lloyd is a son of James Rufus Putnam and his first wife Cynthia Ann Bradley. He was born April 6, 1854. They are here in 1900 and 1910, and in Hartford Township in 1920, and Richland in 1930. The son Charles was born April 27, 1874. He will marry Myra Belle Seevers, and they are here in 1900 through 1930.

 

ALBERT PUTNAM  Palmyra, Warren County

He is a farmer 34 IA born in Dubuque. His wife Catherine Nancy Pyle is 32 IN. They have Antonia 12 IA, Laura 10 IA, Wilbur 8 IA, Albert 5 IA and Thomas 1 IA. Albert is a son of James Rufus Putnam and his first wife Cynthia Ann Bradley. He was born in Dubuque March 16, 1850 and will be here till he dies April 4, 1943.

 

CHARLES PUTMAN  Marion, Washington County

He is 27 IA, his wife Mina Jane Bellevue is 28 IA and they have Nellie 3 IA and Oral a son less than a year IA. He is a son of Jacob G. Putman Junior and Ellen Edmundson from Hampshire County Virginia. They are here in 1895, 1900 and 1910. Mina is widowed here in 1920. This is a German Family, Maryland to Virginia to here in Iowa about 1854.

 

JACOB PUTMAN  Marion, Washington County

He is 37 VA. His wife Lucy Ellen Reeves is 25 IA and they have Stacie E. 10 IA and Indiana 6 IA. He is Jacob Putman III, a son of Jacob G. Putman Junior and Ellen Edmundson from Hampshire County Virginia. They are here through 1920. German Family.

Jacob Junior is now 62 VA and widowed. At home are his son John and his family. I’ll list them next.

He is 35 VA born April 27, 1854. His wife Mary Rosella Whitsel is 22 IA, born in March of 1864. They have Mary 2 IA, Stacey 1 IA. He is John William Putman, a son of Jacob G. Putman Junior and Ellen Edmundson from Hampshire County Virginia. He married Rosetta Whitsel on November 20, 1881. They are here in 1900 and 1910. Mary will die here in 1914, John in 1934. He is living with his widowed dad who will die here in July 1894. Mary’s widowed father Isaac Whitsel 73 OH lives next door.

 

THOMAS PUTMAN  Washington Township, Washington County

He is 32 IA, his wife Laura B. Essley is 26 IA, and they have Rachel 8 IA, Vergie (Virginia) 4 IA and Cleva (Cleveland) a daughter less than a year old. He is another son of Jacob G. Putman Junior and Ellen Edmundson from Hampshire County Virginia. He was born March 28, 1849. He married Laura Essley here in 1876. He is here in 1900, but I don’t find him later. German family.

 

GLEN H. (HOWARD) PUTNAM  Warren Township, Wayne County

He is a Congregational Preacher 32 NY and single. His widowed mother Letitia 54 NY is a music teacher and is with him. He is a son of Glen Putman and Letitia Paulison from Glen, Montgomery County New York. He was born there January 31, 1852. They were in New York City in 1860. Then Glen and his mom were in Union City New Jersey in 1880. He is Charles Marion Putman 18 IA single and working on William Branham’s farm. He is a son of William Marion Putman and Mary Jane Hayes and was born here September 18, 1866. He will marry Ivy Alice Gordon here in 1889 and they are here the rest of their lives. Southern Putman family from Fayette County Indiana and Kentucky then Virginia before that.

 

SURENNO D. PUTNAM  Bloomfield, Winneshiek County

He is a farmer 43 NY. His wife Emma Jane is 31 NY, and they have Bertha 12 IA, Hattie 11 IA, Leonard Ray 6 IA. His widowed mother Hannah 66 NY and his brother Charles S. 40 NY a carpenter are with them. He is a son of John and Hannah Putnam, and was here in 1870 with them. John is number 2853 in Eben Putnam's books. He is a son of Malachi Putnam and Sarah Blount. He was born January 2, 1815 in Lowville, Lewis County, New York. Malachi was from Winchester, Massachusetts. They are here in 1895 and Emma is widowed here in 1900 through 1930 when she is 77 years old.

 

FRANK PUTNAM  Decorah, Winneshiek County

Frank Southwick Putnam is 28 NY a traveling salesman.  His wife Prudie is 26 IA. Gertie M. is 6 IA and Gracie M. 3 IA.  He is a son of John Southwick Putnam and Julia Almira Cooley from Crown Point, Essex County, New York. He was shown at there in 1860. They will be here in 1900, as will his widowed mother Julia. New England Family.

 

WILLIAM PUTTMAN  Liston, Woodbury County

He is 23 IA and his wife Maggie Sevening is 20 GER. Two of her brothers and family are next door. William was born in Military Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa in March of 1861. He was there in 1880. They are in Carroll County Iowa in 1895, and then in Jackson County Illinois in 1900. His father was Barnard Puttmann, born in Prussia. In 1850, Barnard was in Burlington, Racine County, Wisconsin with a wife named Gertrude from Germany and his father John who was 64 at that time.

 

FREDERICK PUTTMANN  Rutland, Woodbury County

He is 44 GER, his wife Christina is 42 GER, and they have Charley 12 IA, Lewis 10 IA, Rudolph 6 IA and Amanda 2 IA. The kids were all born in Scott County. Also here are his older sons William 21 GER, Louis 17 GER and Frederick 18 GER. Also here is Christine Florkie 16 GER. Christine is or soon will be Frederick’s wife. I would guess she is as of now. He is a son of Barnard and Gertrude Puttmann from Germany.

He is a traveling salesman 35 NH, his wife Anna C. Rice is 34 OH and they have Harry 8 OH and Eugene 1 IA. He is a son of Henry Harrison Putnam (#2790) and Clementine Permelia Lovering from Croyden, New Hampshire. They were in Bureau County, Illinois before he moved to South Dakota and then here. He is president of Durston-Putnam Crockery Company and will be here till about 1894. They were in Union County South Dakota in 1880. They are in Adair County Missouri in 1900 and Los Angeles County California in 1910 and 1920.

He wasn’t indexed but was here. He is 51 VT.  His wife Emma Robinson is 47 VT. The children are Walter A. 217 IA, Ina M. 15 IA, Harry I. 14 IA, Jessie I. 8 IA, and Flossie I. 6 IA. He is a son of Prentiss B. Putnam and Jemima Chase. He was born in Whittington, Vermont on May 12, 1844. He married Emma Robinson in Lee County and moved here in the early 1870s. They are here in 1900 and Emma is widowed here in 1910. New England family.

 

JAMES R. PUTMAN  Cincinnati, Appanoose County

He is 45 IN and a plasterer. His wife Maggie Bell is 44 PA and they have Frank M. 12 IA and Merle 2 IA. They were married here December 3, 1871. He is James Putman a son of Benjamin Putman and Melvina Baker from Linn County, Missouri. Before they went to Missouri, they were in Monroe County, Indiana where James was born. Folks moved around a lot in those days.

 

JAMES C. PUTMAN  Cincinnati, Appanoose County

He is a plasterer 24 IA. His wife Minnie B. Wilson is 23 IA. He is a son of William A. Putman and Mary Elizabeth Nelson. His folks were married here in 1865 and James was born here in 1870. Then the family was in Adams County in 1880. He married Minnie B. Wilson on May 5, 1892. He fought in the Spanish American War in Cuba, and in 1899 was one of the 13 founders of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Association. Interesting fella.

William is a son of Benjamin Putman and Melvina Baker from Indiana and then Linn County, Missouri. James will be here in 1900, in Texas County Oklahoma in 1910, and back in Wayne County Iowa in 1920 and 1930, Southern Putman family.

 

WILLARD PUTMAN  Franklin, Appanoose County

He is 22 IA born here and his wife Bertha E. Burr is 19 IA also born here in Appanoose County. He is a son of William Putman and Mary Elizabeth Nelson. William was a son of Benjamin and Melvina Putman from Indiana and then Linn County, Missouri. He was in Appanoose County, Iowa in 1870. Willard just married Bertha here on April 8, 1894. They are here through the 1930 at least. Southern Putman Family.

 

ISRAEL PUTMAN  Lincoln, Appanoose County

He is a Methodist Preacher 36 NY single and boarding. He is a son of Aaron Putnam and Jane Ormsby from Peru, Clinton County New York. He was home there in 1860 and 1870. I don’t find him in 1880, but in 1900 he is way out in Lake County Oregon still preaching and single. In 1920 he is still single, still preaching in Whitman County Washington at age 62.

 

JOHN A. (ABRAHAM) PUTNAM  Taylor, Appanoose County

He is 61 VT, and his wife Anna Briggs is 55 NY. Their son John W. 23 IA is still at home. He is a son of John Glidden Putman and Thankful B. Putnam from Montpelier, Vermont. He has been here since 1869. They are here in 1900 and 1910. By 1900 the son John will be married to Mary Miller and they are here through 1910 and then they’ll get divorced. Mary is here in 1910 through 1930. Young John has a new wife Myrtle and they are in Converse County Wyoming by 1920.

 

GEORGE J. (JACOB) PUTMAN  Cedar Falls, Black Hawk County

He is 40 WI, his wife Ida M. Huyek is 44 IL, and they now have Ethel M. 15 IA born in Grundy County and his brother ALBERT PUTMAN 25 WI is with him. George is a son of Jacob Putman and Mary Jane Marr from Waushara County, Wisconsin. He was home there in 1860 and 1870. He was married in Grundy County, Iowa in 1880. He and Ida are here in 1900 through 1920, and George is widowed here in 1930. I don’t find Albert after this. Dutch folks.

 

JOHN PUTMAN  Waterloo, Black Hawk County

He is 29 OH. He popped up here at age 3 in 1870 with his mother Cassie Hill and her new second husband Andrew Cushman. No clues as to her first (Putnam) husband back in Ohio. He will marry Nellie Hubbard and they will be here in 1900. Don’t find him later though unless he is the guy in Los Angeles in 1910 living alone but says married. In 1910 he is 45 OH ME OH. If it is him, then his dad was from Maine for what that’s worth.

 

SARAH PUTNAM  Waterloo, Black Hawk County

She is 57 IL. She is here in 1900 with her married daughter Laura Couch.

 

MILTON A. (AUGUSTUS) PUTNAM  Boone County

He is 36 IA born in Polk County, his wife Ida T. Sayles is 29 IN and they have Othie Homer 10 IA, Oliver Ray 8 IA, Berthie Ellis 6 IA. He is a son of Benjamin Augustus Putnam and Samantha Ellis Purinton from here. He was born September 11, 1857 and married Ida March 24, 1883. They will all be in Tacoma Washington in 1900. Then they will get divorced and he will be back in Des Moines Iowa in 1910 all by himself. The rest of the family is still up there and will be.

 

CHARLES J. PUTMAN  Hazleton, Buchanan County

He is 27 IA, his wife Elsie Wells is 24 WI and they have Everett 2 IA. He is a son of Peter Putman and Alice S. Teague and was born January 11, 1867 in Fayette County Iowa. Both he and his folks were in Buchanan County from 1870 on. He and his folks are in Fayette County in 1900 and 1910. In 1920 he is widowed and in Linn County and his widowed mother Alice is with him. New York Dutch family.

 

LEWIS PUTMAN  Coon Township, Buena Vista County

He is 28 IA born in Boone County December 24, 1865. His wife Martha A. Pray 27 IA born in Marion County, And they have Demia 5 IA, Earl Francis 3 IA and Cora M. 1 IA. He is a son of Benjamin Augustus and Samantha Putnam and was with them in Boone County in 1870 and 1880. He married Martha E. Pray in Boone County on June 12, 1888. They are here in 1900 and 1910. Martha will die after 1910 and by 1920 he will be here with a new older wife Anna who had been married to a Smith guy before this.

He is 24 WI. He is a son of John Hamilton and Basheba Putman from Montgomery County New York. Bert will move to Shawano County soon and is joined with the following Fred Putnam who has married his sister Della

 

FRED PUTNAM  Pettsford, Butler County

He is 30 IL, his wife Della Putman (Dutch Putman father and a Mohegan Indian Mother) 31 WI, and Della V. 5 IL, Steven H. 3 WI and Elard E. 1 WI. He is a son of Stephen Putnam and his first wife Caroline Wheeler from Winnebago County, Illinois. New England line. Della is a daughter of John Hamilton and Basheba Putman from Montgomery County New York. Basheba was a Stockbridge Mohegan Indian and so Della is Indian as well. John Hamilton is on the Dutch line and is here in the County now. Fred and the family are in Chickasaw County in 1900. They are in Shawano County Wisconsin in 1910, 1920 and 1930. They are on an Indian Reservation there.

 

ULYSSES G. (GRANT) PUTNAM  Greenfield, Calhoun County

He is 31 born in Boone Co Iowa, his wife Clara Wells is 34 IA and they have Lloyd 7 IA born right here. He is a son of Benjamin Putnam and Samantha Purinton, and was with his folks in 1870 and 1880 in Boone County, Iowa. He married Clara Wells in Polk County on November 19, 1884. She will die November 27, 1897, and he will marry Nackey Early November 16, 1898. They are in Dallas County in 1900 through 1920.

 

WILLIAM PUTTMANN  Newton, Carroll County

He is 33 IA and his wife Maggie Sevening is 31 GER. They have Catherine 9 IA, Martha 8 IA, William 6 IA, and Frank 2 IA. William was born in Military Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa in March of 1861. He was there in 1880. They are in Jackson County Illinois in 1900. His father was Barnard Puttmann, born in Prussia. He is 26 IA and has his widowed mother Mary L. 71 NY. He is a son of Willim Rodman Putnam from Oswego County New York. They came out here and were in Hardin County when Fred was born. William died here January 8, 1876, and Mary will die on March 17, 1897. Fred will be married to an Eve here in 1900 and they are in Stevens County, Minnesota in 1910.

 

ELLIOT PUTNAM  Sperry Township, Clayton County

He is 43 NY. Caroline Nus his wife is 33 IA, Ernest 6 IA, Arthur 5 IA, Bertha 2 IA. He is a son of Lucien B. Putnam and his first wife Esther Foster. He is shown there in Fairfield, Fayette County, Iowa in 1870. He married Caroline April 27, 1887. They are here in 1900, and they will be back in Fayette County in 1910 and 1920.

 

LEVI PUTMAN  Clinton, Clinton County

He is 57 NY, his wife Julia 68 PA. He is a son of Victor George and Sarah Ann Putman from Johnstown, Fulton County, New York. He was at home there in the 1850 Census. Levi and Julia were here in 1880 on. They are here in 1900.  He is part of the New York Dutch Putmans.

 

FULTON PUTMAN Bloomfield, Davis County

He is 58 IL, his wife Nancy Ellis Brennan is 56 KY and they have Henrietta 30 IA at home. Elijah Fulton is a son of Elijah Putman and Elizabeth Duff from Fulton County Illinois and then here. He was born here June 17, 1833 and died in Bloomfield, Davis County on February 27, 1914. Nancy died there August 24, 1910. Southern Putman family.

 

JASPER N. (NEWTON) PUTMAN  Lick Creek, Davis County

He is indexed as Joseph 52 IL. His wife Elizabeth Jane Grant is 48 OH and they still have Maud 19 IA, Anna 17 IA, Daisy 15 IA, and Clyde 13 IA. He is a son of Elijah Putman and Elizabeth Duff from Fulton County Illinois and then here. Jack as he was called was born on June 2, 1843 in Fulton County. He married Elizabeth Jane Grant here on November 5, 1867. Jasper or Jack died September 8, 1907 and is buried in Lick Creek, Iowa. Elizabeth is widowed here in 1910 and 1920 and is in Los Angeles in 1930 with her daughter Olive at age 82 OH. His dad Elijah was my Reding Putman’s brother and both were sons of Daniel Putman from South Carolina. Southern Putman Family.

 

HENRY PUTNAM  Delaware Township, Delaware County

He is 62 NY, his wife Elvira Ann Stanclift is 57 NY, Edwin 20 IA, Louis 17 IA and Edith 14 IA all born here in Delaware County. He is a son of David Pease Putnam and Nancy Alcott and was born January 6, 1832 in Lee, Oneida County New York. His dad was from Hartford, Connecticut. He was born January 6, 1832. Elvira was born September 12, 1837. They were married here September 3, 1865. Henry will be here until he dies May 31, 1910.

She is 14 and born here in Dallas County.

 

DAVID A. (ARCHIBALD) PUTNAM  Dubuque, Dubuque County

He is 42 IL (is WI OH OH in 1900) and his wife Mary is 38 SCOT. They have Archie (David A. Jr.) 15 and Florence 10 both born here in Dubuque. They were just married here in 1880. He is a grocer. They are here in 1900 and then Mary will die and he will marry Nellie White in 1908 and be here in 1910 and 1920. Anyway, he is a son of George Putnam and Catherine Scleithe and was born in Tazewell County Illinois and then was with his folks in Grant County Wisconsin in 1860, whole family is missing in 1870 and then he was here just married in 1880. They are here in 1900 through 1920. His second wife Nellie is widowed here in 1930. His brother William Marion is in town too.

 

GEORGE P. PUTNAM  Dubuque, Dubuque County

He is 45 IL, his wife Mary Reuter Schmidt is 33 Luxemburg, Mary 11 IA, Winifred 10 IA, Charles 9 IA and William 6 IA. Kids were born in Jackson County. They are in Plymouth County in 1900 and back here in Dubuque by 1910. He is a son of Jacob Putnam and Eliza Wicks from Jackson County. Jacob is a son of Philip Putman and Christina Lucretia Nobles from St. Johnsville, Montgomery County, New York. They are part of the New York Dutch Putman family.

 

MARION PUTNAM  Dubuque, Dubuque County

He is 39 WI and his wife Harriet is 35 MO. They have Laura 12 born here in Dubuque. He is William Marion Putnam, a son of George Putnam and Catherine Scleithe, and was born about the time his folks moved from Tazewell County, Illinois to Grant County, Wisconsin. He was there in 1860 and here in 1885. He will be here with Harriet in 1900 and 1910 and then by himself here in 1920. His brother David is in town too.

 

MARTIN A. PUTNAM  Dubuque, Dubuque County

He is 33 WI and his widowed mother Sarah Jane 57 IL is with him. He just pops up with her in Linn County Iowa in 1870 and no ideas as to his dad.

 

PETER PUTNAM  Oilwein Township, Fayette County

He is 52 NY, his wife Alice S. Teague is 45 ENG. He is a son of Jacob D. Putman and Hannah Lewis from Montgomery County, New York. They came here in the 1850s and were in Buchanan County in 1860. They are here in 1900 and 1910 and Peter is widowed here in 1920 at age 87. Not bad! Dutch Putman family.

 

MARSHALL PUTNAM  Pleasant Grove, Floyd County

Marshall Danforth Putnam is listed as 41 MI, born in March of 1854. His wife, Betsey Jane Sneath, is 42 NJ, born in January of 1853. The children are: Della 16 IL, born in July of 1878, Frederick Benjamin 11 IA, born in March of 1883, George Washington, 10 IA, born in October of 1884, and Harry Deloss 7 IA, born in November of 1887. Marshall is a son of Benjamin Franklin Putnam and Alma Stone Johnson. He was born in La Grange, Cass County, Michigan on March 12, 1854. Betsy is the first of his three wives. This family was in Owen, Winnebago County, Illinois in the 1880 census, and here in 1885. They are in Pottawattamie County Iowa in 1900 and back in Floyd in 1905. He will then head to California and die in Pomona, Los Angeles County in 1943. His line goes back from Benjamin to Uzziel Putnam and Mary Trask from New York, via Vermont and then Massachusetts before that.

 

MARY J. PUTNAM  Rockford, Floyd County

Mary Jane Wilkins is the widow of Daniel Putnam. They were here in 1870 and 1880. She is now 61 NJ. Daniel was a son of Daniel Putnam (1834) and Rebecca Jane Carleton from Massachusetts and was with them in Rock County WI in 1850. Mary is here still widowed in 1900 through 1920.

 

CHARLES B. PUTNAM  Geneva, Franklin County

He is 48 NY, his wife Anna 46 ENG, Alice or Alvira 27 IA, Seven (Charles Ervin) 21 IA and Perry 19 IA. He is a son of David and Malinda Putman from Jefferson County New York. They were in 1850 and 1860 and in Jackson County, Iowa in 1870. they have been here since the 1880. Dutch Family from New York.

 

GREENE MARION PUTMAN  Hamburg, Fremont County

He is 59 IL, his wife Mary Elizabeth Kelsey is 58 IN, and they have at home Cora 23 IA and Maggie 16 IA. He is a son of Elijah Putman and Elizabeth Duff from Fulton County Illinois and then here in Davis County Iowa. Greene Marion Putman was born April 12, 1835. He married Mary Elizabeth Kelsey on August 21, 1854. She was a daughter of Joseph Kelsey and Rebecca Stevens. They were married in Iowa and remained there until 1858 when they moved to Mercer County, Missouri. They were back here in Fremont County by the 1860s. Greene will die here September 12, 1896, and Mary will die February 1, 1899. There are grave markers there in Hamburg, Iowa to that effect. Southern Putman Family.

 

HOWARD PUTMAN  Franklin, Fremont County

He is 45 IA born Davis County January 1851. Emma Jane Headley his wife is 40 IA. They have Pearl 21 IA, Myrtle 19 IA, Minnie 17 IA, Otto 15 IA, Walter 13 IA, Luetta 11 IA, Howard 9 IA, Essie 7 IA, and Ada 2 IA. Whew! And they will have another daughter Zelma in August 1895. He is a son of Abraham H. Putman and Elizabeth Moran from Davis County, and grandson of Elijah Putman and Elizabeth Duff. Southern Putman Family.

 

O. (OMER) A. PUTMAN  Locust Grove, Fremont County

He is 29 IA born in Davis County and his wife Maggie Reich is 29 IL. They have Glen 6 IA, Phillip 4 IA, Mary 3 IA and Ross just born. He is a son of Greene Marion Putman and Mary Elizabeth Kelly from Davis County and now out here. He was born Bloomfield, Iowa October 3, 1865 and home in 1870. In 1900 he is in Gilcrest, Cheyenne County, Nebraska near his brother Frank. His wife was Maggie Reich born in Illinois in February 1866. I don’t find them in 1910, but in 1920 Omer is in Flathead County Montana and says he is widowed. Maggie is in Kitsap County Washington in 1920 and also says she is widowed. Looks like they split up to me. The sons are all in Montana with their dad in 1920 and 1930. Southern Putman Family.

 

ABRAHAM PUTMAN  Madison, Fremont County

He is 76 IN, his wife Elizabeth Moran is 25 MD. Their unmarried daughter Julia Ann 49 IL is with them. He is a son of Elijah Putman and Elizabeth Duff. Abraham was born on March 8, 1818. He married Elizabeth R. Moran (born in Maryland February 24, 1820) in Canton, Illinois on March 7, 1839. They were in Davis County, Iowa in 1860, and in Schuyler County, Missouri in 1870, and then off to Fremont County, Iowa. Elizabeth will die here August 31, 1896. He will be here with his son Howard in 1900 at age 82, and will die before 1910. Southern Putman Family.

 

GEORGE W. (WILLIAM) PUTNAM  Melrose, Grundy County

He is 40 MA, his wife Helen Nellie King is 40 NH, Roy 14 IA, Mattie 11 IA and Francis 6 IA. George is a son of George Putnam and Martha Blackstone from New Hampshire. In 1860, he was at home with them in Kingston, Linn County, Iowa. George Senior was a son of Gideon Putnam from New Hampshire. He will stay here in Iowa and die in Madison County October 14, 1918. They are there in 1900 and 1910.

 

ALLEN W. PUTNAM  Eldora, Harden County

They aren’t listed but were here in 1880 and 1885 and will be in 1900 and 1910. He would be 56 NY, Phoebe Southard his wife 49 IN and they have several of kids. He is a son of Josiah and Lydia Shaw Putnam and was born in Bethany, Genesee County, New York. He was with a bunch of his brothers back in 1870 in Grundy County, Iowa, and just married to Phoebe in 1880 here in Hardin County. They are here in 1885 through 1910 and Phoebe is widowed here by 1920. New England family.

 

CHARLES PUTNAM  Douglas, Harrison County

He is 48 MI, his wife Julia S. Gordon is 47 WI, and they have William 16 MI and Charchon (?) 7 MI. Can’t tell about the youngest kid as not around in 1900 when they are in La Grange Township. He is a son of Orlean Putnam and Amelia Vanderhoof from Cass County, Michigan. He was at home there in 1850, and married there in 1880. I don’t seem to find any of them again.

 

HORACE C. (CAROTHERS) PUTNAM  Mount Pleasant, Henry County

Horace isn’t listed for some reason, but his kids are. Anyway Phillip C. is 14 IA, Isabelle 3 IA and Helen born in December 1894 IA are listed. Horace has been here since the 1860s and will be in 1900 and 1910. He is the County Sheriff here. He is a son of Philip Dodderage Putnam and Isabel Carothers from Fayette County, Ohio. PHILLIP D. (DODDERIDGE) PUTNAM  Mount Pleasant, Henry County

He is now 84 IA (actually it is CT) he is widowed as his wife Isabel Crothers has died in the late 1880s. His daughter Emma 39 IA is with him. Philip was born March 2, 1810 in Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut. His parents were Philip Putnam (number 1847 in Eben's book) of Wilton, New Hampshire, and Anna Brown of Hartford, Connecticut. In 1850 Philip was in Washington Court House, Fayette County, Ohio and was widowed. He married Isabella J. Crothers in Fayette County, Ohio August 18, 1850.

 

CHARLES H. PUTNAM  Crosses Township, Howard County

He is 37 born here in Howard County, his wife Clarinda is 30 WI and they have Genevieve 2 IA. In 1860, he was here with his widowed mother Martha from Norway, so no ideas as to his dad except he was from New York or Canada and married Martha in Wisconsin in the late 1840s. She is here age 66 NOR. They are here in Vernon Springs in 1900 through 1920 and his mother Martha is still with them in 1910 at age 82.

 

ELIZA PUTNAM  Bellevue, Jackson County

Eliza Wicks is the widow of Jacob Putman. Been here since the 1860s. They returned to Carroll County Illinois in the 1880s and Jacob died there around the late 1880s and she returned here about 1890. She is now 65 NY. Jacob was a son of Philip Putman and Christina Lucretia Nobles from St. Johnsville, Montgomery County, New York. She is here in 1900 and then will die before 1910. He is 32 IL, his wife Elizabeth Vandanacker is 31 IA and they have George 9 IA, John 8 IA and Grace 5 IA. He is Jacob Junior son of Jacob Putman and Eliza Wicks from here in Jackson County. He was born September 4, 1862 when the family was in Carroll County Illinois. He married Lizzie here November 16, 1883. They are here in Bellevue all their lives. She will die here November 17, 1937 and he will die here January 18, 1958. New York Dutch Family.

 

OSCAR PUTMAN  Bellevue, Jackson County

He is 39 IL, his wife Arminda Jane Savage is 34 IL and they have Hattie 17 IA, Jacob 15 IA, Miranda 12 IA and Mary 10 IA. He is yet another son of Jacob Putman and Eliza Wicks. He was born October 5, 1855 in Carroll County Illinois. He married Arminda here January 23, 1876. He will be here till he dies on Christmas Day 1907. In an Obituary from the Bellevue Leader, “Oscar Putman, died after being put off the train, as he had no ticket.  He was returning to Bellevue, Iowa, from Green Island, Iowa.  He had slept through the Bellevue stop earlier, and was trying to return there.  The conductor is said to have put Oscar off the train, before he was given a chance to explain what had transpired.  Oscar was put off around 10:30 P.M., and was found about 6:30 A.M the next day.  He was found about three miles down the track, badly bruised and severely injured.  It would seem that Oscar had either been beaten by someone, or possibly he had been hit by another train.”

 

ELIZABETH PUTMAN  Des Moines, Jasper County

She is Elizabeth Drutz the widow of Robert Putman who died in Prairie City, Iowa May 30, 1892. She is 58 KY (should IL) and has Israel 37 IL, George 22 IA, Ella 20 IA, Josephine 18, Delila 15 IA with her. They are here in 1900 and then she and the kids are in Spokane Washington in 1910. Elizabeth will die in Spokane, Washington September 22, 1913. Robert was a son of Reding Putman (my gg grandfather) and his first wife Stacey Combs. He was born in Putman Township (named for Reding the first settler), Fulton County, Illinois on December 16, 1823, and made the trip to Arkansas with his family in 1836. He then went to Illinois where he married Elizabeth on May 27, 1857 in Morgan County Illinois. They were there in 1860 and here by 1870. Southern Putman Family.

 

HOWARD PUTNAM  Monticello, Jones County

He is 50 born in Dubuque County Iowa, his second wife Sarah Ann Livingston is 45 IA. He is a son of James Rufus Putnam and Cynthia Ann Bradley, and was born December 14, 1844. He married Margaret Jane Kline February 18, 1863. She died here September 21, 1886, and Howard married Sarah Ann Livingston on January 12, 1888. They are here through 1920. Howard will die July 8, 1924 and Sarah on October 13, 1926.

 

RUFUS A. (AUSTIN) PUTNAM  Monticello, Jones County

He is 69 MA. He is Rufus Austin Putnam junior, son of Rufus Austin Putnam and Frances Highborn Porter of Fitchburg, Mass. He has been here since the 1850s and still is in the 1900 census. Doesn’t look as if he ever married.

 

SIMON PUTMAN  Jackson Township, Lee County

He is Simon Kenton Putman 57 OH and his wife Hulda P. Singleton is 55 IL. At home are Iris 21 IL and Frank 17 IL. He is a son of Elijah Putman and Matilda Kenton from Champaign County Ohio and the Brown County Illinois. Simon was born in Mad River Township Ohio on January 6, 1839. He served in the Civil War as a Lieutenant in the 3rd Illinois Cavalry. He married Huldah Singleton January 20, 1859 in Mount Sterling Illinois. She was born October 2, 1838 and died January 7, 1907. They were in Mt. Sterling in the 1860, and in Ray County, Missouri in 1870. They were back in Brown County in 1880 and here in 1885 and will be in 1900. He died April 26, 1906 in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska. Southern Putman family.

 

C. B. (CHARLES BERNARD) PUTNAM  Marion, Linn County

He is now 52 MI and wifeless for the second time. Ester Carroll and he are divorced and he will soon marry another widow Laura Smith and be with her here in 1900. Charles is a son of Orlin L. Putnam and Caroline Brown. He was born in Clarendon, Calhoun County, Michigan. He was at home there in 1860 in Eckford, Calhoun County. His folks are from New Hampshire and then New York. He is here with Laura in 1900 through 1920, and is widowed with his married daughter in Buchanan County in 1930 at age 87.

Charles Concord Putnam is 21 IA, his wife Hattie Evelyn Pierce is 20 OH and they have Ethel 5 months old. He is a son of Charles Bernard Putnam and his second wife Esther Carroll. They are here in 1900.

He is 25 MI, a son of Charles Bernard Putnam and his first wife Nettie Phillips from Eaton County Michigan and then here in the 1870s. He is probably living with his dad.

He is 28 MI and a son of Charles Bernard Putnam and his first wife Nettie Phillips from Eaton County Michigan and then here in the 1870s. He is probably living with his dad and two brothers, but you can’t tell in this census report.

 

FRED PUTNAM  Marion, Linn County

He is 19 IA a son of Charles Bernard Putnam and his second wife Esther Carroll from Eaton County Michigan and then here in the 1870s. He is probably living with his dad and two brothers listed above. He will marry Alva Hanson next year and be here in 1900 and in Whitman County Washington in 1910 Idaho in 1920 and Spokane by 1930.

 

CHARLES PUTNAM  Cedar Rapids, Linn County

He is 35 IL, his wife Lois is 32 NH and they have Essie 11 born here in Linn County. He is a son of Hazeal Putman and Lydia Miller (William and Alla Putman’s son) from Fulton County, Illinois and then here in Linn County in 1880. By 1920 he is still in Cedar Rapids but with a second wife named Winifred. In 1930 he is with his married daughter Essie in Santa Barbara California. Southern Putman Family.

 

WILLIAM PUTNAM  Cedar Rapids, Linn County

He is now 48 NH. He is William Skinner Putnam, a son of Gideon Putnam and Sarah Rice. He was born in Nashua, New Hampshire. He was here in 1880 and was a teacher. In 1910 and 1920, he will be at The Old Soldier's home in Marshall County, Iowa. He was briefly married here in 1885.

 

JOSEPH PUTNAM  Wheeler, Lyon County

He is 24 IA, his wife Nellie Weir is 21 MN and young James 1 IA. He is a son of Henry Putnam and Elizabeth Beaudette from here in Lyon County. His folks were from French speaking Canada. His dad died here in 1893, and his widowed mom will in Sioux County in 1900. Joe is here in 1900 and 1910 and in South Dakota by 1920.

 

EFFIE PUTMAN  Lee, Madison County

She is 19 IA born here. She is a daughter of Rethvan and Tamar Putnam who were here in 1880.

 

WILLIAM PUTNAM  Knoxville, Marion County

He is 48 IA, his wife Mary Ann Rizor is 46 IA and they have Loren Rezin 16 IA, Birdie (Verda) 12 IA and Chester 8 IA at home. William Franklin is a son of James Rufus Putnam and Cynthia Ann Bradley. He was born September 1, 1846 in Dubuque Iowa and married Mary here September 19, 1866. Mary was born in Ohio July 22, 1848. She will be here till she dies August 24, 1926 and he will die July 15, 1934. He served in the 21st. Iowa Volunteer Infantry from 5 August, 1862, until he was mustered out on 15 July, 1865, at Baton Rouge, Louisiana. They are here in 1900 and in Union County in 1910 and back here by 1920.

 

EDGAR PUTNAM  Jefferson, Marshall County

He is 32 IA born right here. He is listed as Edward, but is Edgar Hiram Putnam. He is a son of Naham Dan Putnam and Mary Spake from here. His wife Rosa Shank is 30 IL and they have Mary E. 5 IA and Russell D. 1 IA. They are in Timber Creek in 1900 and 1910 and Marshalltown by 1920.

 

GEORGE PUTNAM  Jefferson, Marshall County

He is 35 IA. His wife Emma Lukehart is 29 IA and they have Ben 9 IA, Inez 7 IA and Estella 5 IA, all born here in Marshall County. George is a son of Naham Daniel Putnam and Mary Spake from here and in Timber Creek now. He will be here till he dies in 1917. Emma is widowed here in 1920.
