KANSAS
CENSUS
REPORTS
1860 -
1900
UPDATED
DECEMBER 9, 2011
The
first Federal Census was taken in 1860 when Kansas was still only a Territory
as it had been since 1854. In 1861 it became a state, the 34th, just in time to
side with the Union cause in the Civil War. In fact, that was the reason it
became a state and why it earned the name `Bloody Kansas' as it was a fighting
ground between factions prior to the Civil War to decide which way it would go
when Statehood came.
