Maine was first established as part of the Plymouth Colony in 1622. France felt it was really theirs. A big part of the French and Indian Wars 1632 till 1759 were because of this and a few other areas. Massachusetts purchased the province of Maine in 1677 and was part of Massachusetts until 1779. The area was contested during the Revolution and especially during the War of 1812 during which the Eastern portion f the State fell under British Control and remained so until 1842 when a Treaty was signed and the present boundaries established. When some of the early Putnam families came to Aroostook County from New Salem, Massachusetts it was part of New Brunswick Canada. Aroostook County wasn’t included in the U.S. Censuses until 1840. Some parts were included in Washington County and other parts in Canada. Frankly if you wander up to Presque Isle, Caribou or Fort Fairfield in Aroostook County, you’ll find yourself well over 130-140 miles into Canada on both sides, Quebec on the West and New Brunswick on the East. Absolute middle of nowhere unless you are interested in growing potatoes or sawing trees down. You also have to realize Maine is as big as the rest of New England put together and less total population than Greater Boston.
In the 1790 census, the columns in the report are for males over 16, males under 16 and females of all ages.
Listing is 1-1-3. He is number 1904, son of Archelaus Putnam (774) and Abigail Goodrich of Danvers, Massachusetts. Caleb was born in Danvers on November 24, 1763. He married Hannah Russell in Middleton, Massachusetts on September 27, 1784. About that time, his folks moved to Wilton, New Hampshire. Caleb and the family are in Newburyport in the mid 1790s and then in Cheshire County New Hampshire around 1797 and are there in the 1800 census. Caleb eventually settled on the coast in Newburyport, Massachusetts. His son James Russell was born here in Topsham in 1789 and his daughter Hannah will be born in Lyme, New Hampshire in 1795. This line goes back Caleb (1904) > Archelaus (774) > Archelaus (286) > Nathaniel (120) > Benjamin (23) > Nathaniel (5) > John (1).
Listing is 1-2-4. John is number 876, a son of Israel Putnam (329) and Sarah Hutchinson of Bedford, Massachusetts. He was born there April 23, 1750, and came up here shortly after the Revolution. He married Joanna Eames in Cambridge, Massachusetts March 22, 1774. John will die here about 1815, Joanna in 1834. This line goes back John (876) > Israel (329) > Israel (126) Benjamin (23) > Nathaniel (5) > John (1).
Listing is 1-1-1. He is actually Stephen Jr., number 1853 in Eben Putnam’s numbering system. He was born in Temple, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire August 11, 1765. He is a son of Stephen Putnam (764) and Olive Varnum. He came to Maine in about 1788 by himself, met and married Sarah Elliot here on December 2, 1789. It was the town’s first marriage. In a few years, his father and more of his family will join him here in Rumford. The family will be here pretty much forever. This line goes back Stephen (1853) > Stephen (764) > Jacob (283) > Nathaniel (120) > Benjamin (23) > Nathaniel (5) > John (1).
In the 1800 census both males and females are broken into 0-9, 10- 15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
He is indexed as Putnam, but can’t find him on the page. He is Stephen’s son who is in Rumford in 1810. Rumford was a part of Oxford County by then.
Listing is 00010 00010. He is number 621, a son of Nathan Putnam (224) and Elizabeth ‘Betsy’ Buffington of Salem Village. He was born in Sutton, Massachusetts on July 19, 1773. He married Elizabeth Newton in Sutton on December 15, 1796. They headed up here pretty much right after they were married. In a few years, they will head a bit further north, and settle in Dixfield, Oxford County. They will remain there. There never were any children. This line goes Oliver > Nathan > Isaac > Edward > Thomas > John.
Listing is 00101 00201. This is Stephen Sr. (764) and his wife Olive Varnum. They have come to join their son Stephen. They, and the family will remain here. Stephen was born in Salem Village on September 24, 1744. He was a son of Jacob Putnam and his second wife, Susanna Styles. They settled in Temple, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire where all the kids were born. He brought most of his family over here in the very early 1790s. He will die here in 1812.
Listing is 212010 30010. Stephen and Sally are the real founding family here in Rumford.
Listing is 11010 02110. John and Joanna were here in the 1780s. John will be around a few more years, and then will die in Monroe (then a part of Hancock County), before 1820. Some of his sons will start popping up there in the 1820s.
Listing is 00100 10100. He is John Junior, and was born in 1778 in Charlestown, Massachusetts. He married Lucinda (Laurinda) Walker here in Anson on February 4, 1799.
In the 1810 census both males and females are broken into 0-9, 10- 15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
Listing is 10010 1130X. There was a 1 in the last column, but it was crossed out. He is number 2087, a son of Henry Putnam (863) and his first wife Mary Hawkes. He was born in Reading, Massachusetts June 28, 1778. He graduated from Harvard in 1802, and married Catherine Hunt of Roxbury (Boston), Massachusetts September 13, 1807. His father had died in 1806, and I would guess the older woman who was crossed out was his stepmother, Lucy Tufts Putnam, who came up here and then went back to Massachusetts and married Jacob Osgood in 1811. Henry was active in town politics. He will be here until 1825, when he will move to New York City and die there in 1827. His son George Palmer Putnam had gone there at the same time. George later (1848) established the publishing firm of G. P. Putnam and Son. His grandson, also George Palmer Putnam, was the guy who married Amelia Earhart, the pilot. This line goes back Henry > Henry > Daniel > Daniel >Benjamin > Nathaniel > John.
Listing is 00100 00000. Not sure who he is, he’ll be out on Mount Desert in the next census. In 1820, he will be married to Susanna Thurston (married about 1811) with some young ones too. By 1850 they will be even further out in Harrington, Washington County. Matt Putnam has come up with a pretty good idea. Eli Putnam (#989) and Elizabeth Harback came up to Livermore, Maine From Sutton, Mass. in 1803. Eli deeded some land he had here to a Thomas Rich around 1810 and returned to Mass where he died about 1814. He had a son who would be the age of this Henry. Matt looked up this census listing and noticed a whole bunch of Rich folks living near him. Then a lot of them moved to Mt. Desert where Henry will move shortly. Based on all this, Henry could well be the son of Eli and Betsy Putnam. Eben didn’t have anything on that family.
X PUTNAM Township 6, Hancock County
Listing is 21010 3001. The page is torn right through the first name. I would venture that this is John and Joanne.
Listing is 32010 10110. Sam is number 1855, the second eldest of Stephen’s kids. He was born in Temple May 29, 1768. He originally married Lucy Styles in Temple in 1794. She came up here and died February 2, 1804. Sam then married Elizabeth Cobb of Norway, Maine on September 16, 1806.
Listing is 32010 00010. The numbers are off, Stephen should be out in the right hand column. This will be Dad’s last census, as he will die here on June 29, 1812. I don’t know when Olive died, but she has passed on by now it seems.
Listing is 31210 12110. He and Sally will ‘assume’ the title ‘Senior” in the 1820 census.
Listing is 10010 00010. He and the next two guys might be related. The towns are all next to each other. Sad news is that I have not a decent clue as to who they all are. William and James will be here again in 1820. William married Deborah Bradford of Kingston, Plymouth County, Massachusetts on March 24, 1808. The IGI lists the marriage in both Kingston and in Maine on the same date, but it was here in Maine. Deborah would probably be Mayflower stock descended from the first Governor of Massachusetts, John Bradford. Now as to a reasonable guess. Look up Eleazer number 409 in Eben’s book. He doesn’t have a bunch of info on that family, but there is a section detailing how Eleazer’s son Samuel was in Topsham, Maine and deeded some land to William Putnam, and further states that William was in Turner, Maine in 1809. Right here. Now, Eben doesn’t list William as a son of Eleazer, but in the vital records of Medford, Mass there is a mention of Eleazer, wife Mary, sons William age 4, John age 3 and Ezra age 1 (in 1765). None of these kids are listed by Eben, but are obviously Eleazer’s. But it is reasonable that Samuel Putnam would quit claim lands in Maine to his older brother before returning to Massachusetts. So, I go with this guy being a son of Eleazer Putnam and Mary Crosby of Medford, and then Chelmsford, Massachusetts. Seems reasonable to me.
Listing is 00100 00000. He is number 1706, a son of Asa Putnam and his first wife Lucy Haynes of Sudbury and then Stow, Massachusetts. He will marry Betsy Ames here in 1813, and they’ll be here forever. He till the mid 1830s, and Betsy into the 1880s.
Listing is 02010 00110. No ideas here.
Listing is 20010 00100. Finally got this guy. He is Simeon Waters Putnam number 2261, a son of David Putnam (988) and Martha Waters. He was born in Sutton, Massachusetts in 1783. He moved here to Livermore with his uncle, Simeon Waters, to learn the trade of hammer making. He was only 12-15 at the time. He married Azuba Morse here about 1804. He will be moving shortly to Freeman, Maine and will remain there. This line goes back Simeon > David > Fuller > Jeptha >Eleazer > John > John.
Listing is 10010 21010. He and his wife Lucinda Walker have been here since the 1700s.
THE
PUTNAMS of Houlton, Washington County
This part of Maine, or really this part of the United States, was so remote being on the Canadian border on two sides, that the census takers probably never knew it existed. In fact, this area was disputed by both the United States and Canada, and really wasn’t a part of the State of Maine at the time best as I can figure. But there are a fair size bunch of Putnams up here. Take a peek at the 1820 census and I’ll give you another preview. They won’t get themselves recorded until the 1830 census, by which time they will have been here about 15-20 years. Amos Putnam’s widow and her kids were here by 1805, Joshua’s kids were here by 1812. Read on.
In the 1820 census males are broken down 0-9, 10-15, 16-18, 19-25, 26-44, 45 and older. Females are divided 0-9, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
Listing is 100010 21010. Henry and Catherine will be here about 5 more years, and then will go to New York City.
Listing is 100010 10010. In 1830, there is a Daniel here 10 years older than this guy. Probably the same guy, and I know who Daniel is. He’s the soon to be listed Silas’ brother. They will both be here in Prospect in 1830. They are sons of John Putnam and Joanna Eames.
Listing is 110010 40010. He was in Deer Isle in 1810, and has since married Susanna Thurston. The eldest son is John Thurston Putnam, who will be around thru the 1900 census in Washington County. Listing is 000010 00000. He’s a son of Samuel and his first wife Lucy Styles. He was born here July 11, 1797. He married Mary ‘Polly’ Keyes here on January 3, 1824.

He married Diantha Thatcher Thurston in Ward or probably Sutton, Massachusetts August 25, 1812. They will be a few miles away in Eddington in 1840 and 1850. Don’t know why he is over on this side of the border. He has just married Hannah Curry March 27, 1820.
You are just going to have to trust me on this one. Houlton is so far up in Maine, right on the border of New Brunswick, Canada, that the census takers just never made the trip up here. Also that area bounced back and forth between the U.S. and Canada then. But, in the very early 1800s, a whole bunch of Putnams and six other families, including a Houlton, from New Salem, Massachusetts were granted land in what will become Aroostook County to establish a school, an offshoot of the New Salem Academy. Amos Putnam (277), and his brother Joshua (278) got the chore of trekking up there to get the job done. Amos died in the late 1790s, so his widow, Lydia Trask Putnam and Josh’s widow, her sister Eunice Trask Putnam, took the gang and hauled their stuff to Boston, took a boat to St. John, New Brunswick, Canada, and then barges to Woodstock, N.B., then headed into the wilderness on horses. They have been here since the early 1800s, but no one knew, or probably cared, that they were here. They were several hundred miles from the last outpost of civilization. Actually things haven’t changed that much today. Real boondocks and potato fields here. Hang around till 1830, and you’ll get an idea of the folks who are here. Lydia died here this spring, April 8, 1820 at the age of 87. Not certain when Eunice died, but it was up here probably in the 1810 time frame. The kids somehow endured the winters (and summers) and a bunch are around for a long, long time. Bob Putnam of Marietta, Ohio who established the American Friends of Puttenham was himself born up here in Houlton. Just got some census info on the Houlton Putnams.

Listing is 220201 1031. He’s in his 40s. Actually this guy is Joshua Jr. He is number 748, son of Joshua Putnam (278) and Eunice Trask. He was born in New Salem on February 8, 1772. He will die here shortly on June 14, 1835. He married Betsy Baker in October 1796. As far as things go, Josh was kinda a latecomer, arriving here in 1812. His line goes back Joshua (748) > Joshua (278) > Amos > John > Nathaniel > John.
Listing is 111101 00001. He is in his late 40s. Aaron is number 745, a son of Amos Putnam (277) and Lydia Trask of New Salem, Massachusetts. He was born in New Salem, Massachusetts July 19, 1773. His brother Abner Putnam will be in Ludlow, Maine (way up north near Houlton) in 1835, according to Eben, but was not there for either the 1830 or 1840 census. Oliver and Betsy (Elizabeth Newton) never had children, so the young couple living here are probably just helping out on the farm.
They have been here since the early 1800s, his wife is Deborah Bradford. The listing now is 000000001 00010001. He is in his 60s, she her 50s. They will not be around for the 1840 census. He will die in 1831, and Deborah will move in with another family. She won’t die until 1848.

This is the son of John Putnam junior and Lucinda Walker. The listing is 01001 30001. He is in his mid to late 20s as is his wife Rhoda. He will be married twice, first to Nancy Jones and later to Eliza Mitchell. Nancy is the one shown here. She will die in 1835 and he’ll marry Eliza July 3, 1839 in Monroe, Waldo County.
Listing now is 112001 101001. He is in his 30s, born here December 22, 1792. He’s another son of John and Joanne. The Daniel above is his older brother. The John in Somerset County is his oldest brother. Silas married Mary Ann Mitchell April 9, 1817.

His line goes back Joshua (748) > Joshua (278) > Amos > John > Nathaniel > John.
JOSHUA PUTNAM 2ND Houlton, Washington County

They are here now and in 1840 may be the family in Guilford, Windham County, Vermont. Can’t find him after that yet, but he sure could move around a lot. Think he went out to Ohio, but never found him there. But Eben has him dying here in December 1830, so just not certain. See the listing in 1840 in Vermont for another thought there.

They will be in Somerset County in 1850.
GEORGE (CYRUS, IRA?) PUTNAM Hallowell, Kennebec County
The index showed a George to be here, but I couldn’t find him on the page he was supposed to be on, but did find an entry on the previous page that looked more like Ira or Cyrus than Geo. This listing was 00101 00001001. He and his wife Harriet Pinkham in their 20s and someone’s mom in her 50s. Probably Cyrus, Sam and Betsy’s kid.

OLIVER PUTNAM Dixfield, Oxford County
Still here. The listing is 00011001 00000001. He and Elizabeth are now in their 60s. They never had children, so the two young guys are just farm help.
SAMUEL PUTNAM Peru, Oxford County
The listing is 1011001 0012001. They are in their 40s. He is Sam Jr. and has his second wife, Sylvia Stephens with him. She was the widow of Daniel Brisbee. They were married in about 1835. In 1850, they will be in Greenwood, Oxford County and will remain there until his death in 1854.

JOHN PUTNAM Madison, Somerset County
This listing is 0001 0001. He’s in his late teens, she in her early 20s. Madison is just South of both Kingfield and New Portland. I would guess he too is one on Simeon’s sons.
DANIEL PUTNAM Frankfort, Waldo County
The listing is 00000001 100001. He is a son of John and Joanna, and was in Prospect in 1830. Now, curious stuff. He was married to Nancy Jones and they had 4 kids. In 1839, he married Eliza Mitchell here and here they are with just a newborn daughter, Nancy. Possibly another divorce, where Nancy took the kids and headed south to civilization. Don’t know. But, in 1850 there is a Nancy Putnam age 63 MA (the exact age, she was born in 1786) living in the ‘poor house’ in Dexter, Maine not far from here, and close to Daniel Jr. Builds up the old divorce theory, even though I have a date of her death in 1835.
DANIEL PUTNAM Belfast, Waldo County
This listing is 0000001 100002. They are in their 40s. He should be number 2108, a son of Daniel Putnam (878) and Hannah Alexander. His brother Israel is in Piscataquis County and will soon be joined by the rest of his sisters. In fact it looks like one is here now. Anyway, Dan was born in Chelmsford, Massachusetts November 27, 1798. He married Marcia or Maria Hatch here on December 27, 1836, and will later marry a widow Mrs. Permelia Hilton on May 12, 1847. They will be here through 1860. Then, I guess it wasn’t cold enough here, he will head to Minnesota and die there in 1876.
SILAS PUTNAM Prospect, Waldo County
The listing is 0212101 0010301. He’s been here a while. Both he and Mary Ann are now in their 40s.

BENJAMIN PUTNAM Prospect, Waldo County
This listing is 00001 00001. An identical listing 8 pages further along the census. Must be a duplicate, moving to a new house and all that. The first listing has him right after his folks. In 1850 there is only one Ben here, so this has to be a simple duplicate listing.
HENRY PUTNAM Harrington, Washington County
The listing is 00020001 02001001. He was here in 1830, and is now in his mid 50s. His wife is Susanna Thurston actually about 48 now.

MAINE 1850
CENSUS

AARON
R. (RANDOLPH) PUTNAM Houlton, Aroostook
County
He is 36 born Houlton ME, his wife Maria Burliegh is 30 born in Holderness NH. Maria is probably Maria Burliegh Parker, daughter of Ezra Parker and Hannah Burliegh. They are living with his brother Jay here in town. Aaron is a son of Aaron Sr. and Isa Patrick. They will be off west in a short while. In 1860 they are in Knox County, Illinois, and in 1870 in DeKalb County, Illinois where they will stay until he dies in 1874. They never had any children.
CHRISTINA PUTNAM Houlton, Aroostook County
She is Christiana Jane Wormwood, the Widow of Amos Putnam. Amos just died a few months back on December 29, 1849. Nice thing in this township only. They not only list the state you were born in, but also the town. Christina is 48 Saco ME, L. H. (Levi Houlton) 30, Sally 22, Alvarez G. (Gonsalvo) 20, Augustus A. (Amos) 18, Lyman (Lyman Orlando) 16, Polly C. (Cook) 14, Isa Angeline 12, Varney W. (Wheeler) 10, Henry H. (Harrison, what else) 8, Charles 6, Maria B. (Burliegh) 4, and Samuel W. (Wormwood) 2. All the kids were born in Houlton ME. Now if you think this is a lot of kids, listen to this. Two daughters, Lydia and Julia have married and are gone, one son, Amos, died December 6, 1953, and yes, there is one more due in September, Frank Lewis Putnam born September 18, 1850. Frank was, of course, posthumous as far as his daddy goes. If you look at the date Amos died and the date Frank was born, this might well have been Amos’ dying act. There were 17 in all. If Amos hung in a tad longer they might have had a double dozen or whatever.
JAY S. (STILLMAN) PUTNAM Houlton, Aroostook County
Aaron’s son is now 47 New Salem MA, Betsy Broad 31 Albion ME, Willard H. 8 and Teresa 5, both born in Houlton ME. Then, if you paid attention back in 1840, I told Aaron was going to die here on February 13, 1849. So Jay being the eldest, he seems to have acquired the main farm and everyone else in the family. Here you’ll find Lydia Wheeler 79 New Salem MA. She is number 743, Aaron’s sister who is the widow of Jonas Wheeler. Isa Putnam 76 Weston MA is Isa Patrick Aaron’s widow. Also there is Jay’s youngest brother Aaron Randolph Putnam 36 Houlton and his wife Maria G. Burliegh 30 Holderness NH. Then there are two Irish folks helping out. No one knows potatoes like the Irish.
LYSANDER PUTNAM Houlton, Aroostook County
He’s the fourth of Aaron and Isa’s four children. He is 44 Woodstock, New Brunswick, Ruth
Libby is 41 Albion ME, Hannah 15, Cordelia 9 (she is going to die in two months on August 26), and Mellin 1, all born in Houlton ME. Then there are Eliza Fall 19 and Shepard Fall 17, both born in Albion ME. Ruth was a Libby and married John Fall previously and these are two of her kids. He is number 1796, a son of Aaron Putnam (745) and Isa Patrick. He was born in Woodstock, New Brunswick on December 27, 1806 while on the way here to Houlton. He married Ruth Libby here in Houlton November 15, 1835. Ruth had been previously married to John Fall, and two of the youngsters here are Fall children. Lysander will be here till he dies September 27, 1886. Ruth was a daughter of Ebenezer Libby and Hannah Smilley. She was born in Albion, Kennebec County Maine July 17, 1809 and will die here in Houlton October 10, 1895.
JOHN V. (VARNUM) PUTNAM Houlton, Aroostook County
Told you about this guy back in 1840. He is now 47 New Salem MA, Aziel 15, Sarah 13, and Black Hawk 12 all born in Houlton. He was married to Elizabeth Jenkins who had died November 15, 1846. Also there is his mother Sally (Rich) Putnam 87 New Braintree MA. Aziel and Sarah are children of Joshua and are also listed at home in the next listing.
JOSHUA PUTNAM Noff, Aroostook County
The town doesn’t exist anymore, I believe it became Cary, Maine. Josh is the eldest of John and Sally’s kids. He is now 56 MA, Lucia Clark 54 MA, Varnum or Varney, a son, 26 MA, Otis 22 MA, Ira Abercrombie 18 ME, Aziel Walden 15 ME, Sarah 12 ME. Also there listed is his mother Sarah Putnam 86 MA this time. This town is several miles south of Houlton. Maybe the added sun and warmth took a year off her age right then and there.
ARTEMAS PUTNAM Portland, Cumberland County
He is a confectioner. He is 43 MA, Sarah H. Priest, his wife, is 39 MA and the have George 12 MA. They are from Cambridge, Massachusetts. He was born in 1806, but wasn’t christened until November 27, 1814 in Cambridge. He is a son of Artemas Putnam (1013) and Mehitable Simons of Cambridge. Artemas Senior was a son of Gideon Putnam (396) and Abigail ‘Abby’ Holton of Sutton, Massachusetts. Gideon took the family early on to Calais, Maine. If you look at a map, you’ll understand why that part of Maine was claimed by both the United States and Canada. Actually I think it was because no one wanted anything that remote. This part of the border was not resolved until 1842, so there were no censuses taken up till now. And it also looks like Artemas Senior wasn’t talked into the trip north anyway. Then, young Artemas here married Sarah H. Priest in Cambridge on August 22, 1837. They were there in 1840 and recently moved up here to sell salt water taffy or somesuch. This line goes back Artemas > Artemas (1013) > Gideon (396) > Jeptha > Eleazer > John > John.

SIMEON (WATERS) PUTNAM Freeman, Franklin County
Kinda back home. He was here in Freeman years and years ago when it was part of Somerset County, now he's moved for the fifth or so time and is back. He is now 66 MA and a saddler, Mahala (Greenleaf) is 50 ME, Esther H. 19 ME, Fuller 17 ME, Vaughn G. (Greenleaf) 15 ME, and Stillman N. (Newell) 10 ME. Also there is Lemuel Bangs 23 ME a coach driver, he is a son of Mahala’s first marriage. Mahala will be here widowed in 1860.
CHARLES (LEE) PUTNAM Freeman, Franklin County

This is going to get more confusing (age wise) in 1860, when it looks like he will have a new wife. The William H. listed here at age 21, will then be listed as Houghton W. age 18.
S. V. PUTNAM Readfield, Kennebec County
This is a she age 21 ME living with Lewis and Priscilla Davis.

CYRUS
PUTNAM Hallowell, Kennebec County
He is a wheelwright 27 ME and boarding. There was a George or Ira or possibly this Cyrus here in 1840, but it was very hard to read the name. Anyway, I think the age was recorded wrongly. He is 37 and is a son of Samuel Putnam and Betsy Cobb of Rumford, Oxford County. He was born August 16, 1812. He’ll be in Lewiston in 1860. He married Harriet Pinkham December 9, 1838 and she was around in 1840, but not anymore.
GEORGE C. PUTMAN Damariscotta, Lincoln County

NANCY PUTMAN Dexter, Penobscot County
She is 63 MA and lives in the county poor house. I really think this gal is Nancy Jones, first wife of Daniel Putnam and mom of the above Daniel in Dixmont. She was married to Dan Sr. in 1830 with four children, including the above Daniel. Then by 1840 she got divorced or something, and Dan Sr. had a new wife, Eliza Mitchell, and no kids. The age is perfect, as Nancy Jones was born in 1786 back in Massachusetts.
JOHN PUTNAM Dexter, Penobscot County
He is 43 NH and works on the Bryant farm. He is a son of John Putnam and Mary Herrick. He was born in Wilton June 8, 1807. In 1860 his mother Mary, brother Lyman and sister Abby will all be here in Dexter. His brother Franklin is in Bangor right now. John will be back in Wilton, New Hampshire with his wife, Abigail Holt, who is still there now and listed as a pauper. Guess he left her, then had second thoughts.

WILLIAM
W. (WALKER) PUTNAM West of the Vien River,
Somerset County
John and Lucinda’s son has now moved out into the Boondocks. They were in New Vineyard, Franklin County in 1840. Now his ‘town’ is Township 3, Range 3 west of the Vien River. Now if you remember back in 1830 he was married to Nancy Jones and had a bunch of kids, in 1840 was married to Eliza and had no kids. Well, I believe the Nancy Putnam in Penobscot County is his ex-wife. His son Daniel junior, from the first marriage, is there also with his wife Abigail Tasker.

Still here, a son of Daniel Putnam and Hannah Alexander from Chelmsford, Mass. He is now 51 MA, a trader, Permelia Hilton, his second wife, is 41 ME. They were married here May 12, 1847. They have several boarders.

HENRY PUTNAM Harrington, Washington County
He has been in eastern Maine since the very early 1800s, and was married here in 1810 to Susannah Thurston. He first popped up in 1810 in Deer Isle and has kept moving northeastward ever since. LEWIS PUTNAM Pembroke, Washington County
He is number 1486, a son of Zadock Putnam (609) and Abigail Elliott of Grafton. He was born there May 16, 1782. I have no idea about a wife. All Eben has in his book is that he lived in Eastport, Maine and left descendants. He hasn’t shown up in any census reports, but if the two following gals are his daughters, he has been way out here since before 1820. This area is so remote, the census guys lust may never have ventured this far out on the eastern coast. Also this area was long disputed with Canada, and may well have been part of New Brunswick in those days. Remember this border area was not resolved until 1842, so you’ll have to look up Canadian records before that. Pembroke is a few miles inland from Eastport. Anyway, he is 68 MA and has Russell (38 MA) and Emily (31 ME) Foster with him. They all live with George (38 ME) and Teresa (30 ME) Head. I would guess that the two wives are his daughters.
