MARYLAND
CENSUS
REPORTS
1790 -
1930
UPDATED JANUARY 9,
2011
In
the 1790 census, the columns are males over 16, males under 16 and females of
all ages.
In
the 1800 and 1810 census both males and females are broken into 0-9, 10- 15,
16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
In
the 1820 census males are broken down 0-9, 10-15, 16-18, 19-25, 26-44, 45 and
older. Females are divided 0-9, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
In
the 1830 and 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14,
15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.
From
1850 on ages and states of birth are shown. In the actual 1880 census, places
of birth are listed for the person, their father and their mother. In the 1880
Soundex only families with children under 10 are listed. In the 1900 and later
Soundex reports, all families are listed.
Up
until 1900, virtually everyone in the State is descended from Philip Jacob
Putman the immigrant from Germany. He arrived on the ship Phoenix in Philadelphia on September 25, 1751. He then moved to
Frederick County, Maryland. If you want more info, family groups and all that,
go to the German Putman page and then to Philip Jacob Buttman. A lot more info
there.
MARYLAND

1 male under 16, 2 over 16 and 6 females. He is Philip Jacob and Maria Putman’s
son, Johan Adam, or now Americanized to John Adam. His wife is Sarah. Listing
is 1-2-6. They are here through about 1810 and then will head out to Ohio.
Others will come out several years later.
PHILIP PUTMAN Frederick County
Listed
as himself, wife and two sons. He is Philip Jacob Putman Junior. Listing is
2-1-1. He will die soon, and in 1800 his wife Mary Anna and sons John and
Philip will be here.
MARYLAND
1800 CENSUS
In the 1800 census both males and females are broken into 0-9, 10-
15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
JOHN PUTMAN Frederick County
He is
now over 45 as is his wife, Sarah. He has 3 sons and a daughter under 10, 1 son
and 2 daughters in the 10-16 bracket. Listing is 31001 12011. He is Philip
Jacob and Maria Putman’s son. They are off to Ohio soon.
JACOB PUTMAN Frederick County
He is
Philip Jacob Putman 3rd. He is in the 16-26 bracket. His mother Anna Mary is
also there in her 40s. Listing is 00100 00010.
MARY PUTNAM Baltimore City
This
is a strange listing, 00000
0000050. The last two columns represent 'other free persons.' There is
no listing for this Mary, but I guess there are five others living with her.
Perhaps when they transcribed they did it wrong and it was just a 1 in the over
45 column.
MARYLAND
1810 CENSUS
In the 1810 census both males and females are broken into 0-9, 10-
15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
P. PUTMAN Frederick County
This
has to be Philip Jacob Putman. The listing is 02210 22001. He is in his early 20s, has his mother Mary Anna with
him as well as John’s kids it looks like.
MARYLAND
1820 CENSUS
In the 1820 census males are broken down 0-9, 10-15, 16-18, 19-25,
26-44, 45 and older. Females are divided 0-9, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
JOHN PUTMAN 3rd District, Washington County
He
seems to be John Putman, son of John Adam Putman, with his wife Annie Elizabeth
Summers. The listing is 000200
10100. Both are in their 20s.
PHILIP PUTMAN Frederick County
I
don’t find him in the index, but he is probably here. He will die soon as his
wife Catherine is widowed here in 1830. Or he may have died already and
Catherine is with some other family now. Tough when they only list the head of
the household and not everyone there. Gotta wait till the 1850 for that.
MARYLAND
1830 CENSUS
In the 1830 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10-

She
Catherine Smith Putman, the widow of Philip Jacob Putman. In 1840 she is listed
under her full name of Catherine. The listing is 000000 0101001. She is in her 40s with two
daughters at home.
MARYLAND
1840 CENSUS
In the 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10-
14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.
CATHERINE PUTMAN 1st District, Washington County
Philip's
widow is still here. The listing now is 00001 00010011001. Not exactly certain who all the 3 new folks
are. Catherine is now in her 50s and it looks like her son Noah and his wife
Margaret Hines and her mother Mary may have moved in with Cathy. The other
older woman is probably the Susan Putman who shows up in 1850. Not really
certain here though.
JOHN PUTMAN 3rd District, Frederick County
John
and Anne Elizabeth Summers his wife are still here. Current listing is
0111001 0110101. Both of them are
in their 40s with six kids at home.

JOHN H. PUTNAM Cumberland, Allegany County
He
is a boatjoiner 25 NY and his wife Jane J. Cairns is 20 NY. They live next to
Hiram and Mercy Weldon also from New York. Hiram is a boatsman, so maybe they
work together. They are also both listed back home in Rochester, New York where
he is a boat builder. He is a son of Johannes L. Putman and Nancy Smith of
Mohawk Valley, Montgomery County New York. He was born there June 13, 1825. He
married Jane Cairns (possibly originally spelled Cairncross, Scottish) February
3, 1848, and headed out to Rochester. They will be there in 1860. Dutch
folks.

1833 and died August 22, 1913. She was a daughter of Philip Shriver and Catherine
Craeger. John was a farmer in the Creagerstown District of Maryland. According
to the article and a descendant they had twelve children, eleven who 'grew up'.

He is
John Adam's son. He is 57 MD, Annie Elizabeth Summers his wife 54 MD, Julia Ann
18 MD and Hezekiah 15 MD. John was born June 22, 1793. He remained in Maryland
and died in Middletown Valley on August 31, 1872 at the age of 79 years and 2
months. He married Annie Elizabeth Summers March 11, 1819. She was born
December 13, 1795, and died April 3, 1883 at age 83. Anne was a daughter of

They lived on the old farm in Harmony, Maryland in the Middletown Valley area

MD, John H. 9 MD, Samuel 7 MD, Jacob 5 MD, Rebecca 3 MD and Daniel 1 MD. I have
no idea at all who he is. I don’t think he is actually a Putman, the name just
got screwed up in transcription onto the page.

lives two doors or farms down from his dad, John. He is 28 MD, Elizabeth Ann
Summers, his wife, is 25 MD, Jacob Ezra 3 MD and John H. 1 MD. Also there is

NOAH PUTMAN Sharpsburg, Washington County
He is
the son of Philip Jacob and Catherine
Smith Putman. He is 25 MD, Margaret Hines 23 MD, John 5 MD and Mary 2
months MD. Also there is Mary Hines 60 MD who is Margaret's mom. They live next
to the family of John Hines (40 MD) who is her brother. Noah and Margaret were
married here December 14, 1840.
SUSAN PUTMAN 2nd District, Washington County
She
is 50 MD and living with Jack and Catherine Sautz. Catherine is 28 MD. I would
guess Susan is someone's widow and tied into the gang at Catherine Putman’s
place in 1840. This Catherine is probably a daughter as age is right.
