MASSACHUSETTS 1860 CENSUS

 

RELIANCE PUTNAM  Adams, Berkshire County

She is Reliance Bristol, widow of Jonathan Putnam. She is 55 NY a domestic, Mary Ann 33 MA a dressmaker, Rosalyn L. 25 MA and Martha J. 17 MA. The two daughters work in a paper mill. They were in Pittsfield in 1850, and she will be here through the 1880. Her son Henry is in Lee now. Wish I knew who Jonathan was though.

 

NANCY A. PUTNAM  Adams, Berkshire County

She is 30 MA a shirt maker, and boarding. She might be Jonathan and Reliance’s daughter listed as what looked like Miranda A. in 1850.

 

DAVID PUTNAM (JR.) Becket, Berkshire County

Son of David Putnam and Hannah Chaffe, he is now a farmer 58 MA, Betsy Clark his second wife is 36 MA, Elizabeth 7 MA and what looks like Sarah E. 4 MA. His son Lorenzo is nearby, and looks like the other daughters from the first marriage are all married off now. They are here in Hampden County in 1870, and by 1880 they are still here with Anna (listed Sarah here) and another daughter Lucy born in 1861.

 

WILLIAM M. PUTNAM  Becket, Berkshire County

He is a basket maker 42 MA, Mary Ann Olmstead, his wife, is 41 VT, Rebecca (Fiona in 1850) 19 MA, Climina H. 14 MA, David W. 10 MA, Marietta 3 MA. Also there is his father David Putnam 89 MA. He was in Lee in 1850. Until his dad showed up here, I wasn’t sure who he was. Now I do, he is the youngest son of David and Hannah.

 

DAVID PUTNAM  Becket, Berkshire County

He is widowed and is now 89 MA. His wife Hannah Chaffe had died in Becket May 29, 1859. David will die here July 9, 1862. He is living with his son William just above.

 

LORENZO R. PUTNAM  Becket, Berkshire County

He is a teamster, 28 MA, Mary H. Thayer, his wife, 25 VT, David L. (Lorenzo) 6 MA, Arthur 3 MA, Frank J. 1 MA. He is a son of David Putnam jr. and his first wife. They will be in Monterey, Berkshire County in 1870. In the mid 1870s this whole gang will be in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In 1880 Lorenzo’s on the road and back here, but in 1900, everyone of these guys are in Minneapolis and all married.

 

JOEL, RAMSOM & SALLY PUTNAM  Becket, Berkshire County

The three unwed kids of Joel and Sally Putnam are still together, but are all now in the ‘Poor House.’ Joel is 64 MA, Ransom 58 MA and Sally 61 MA.

 

JOSEPH M. (MELVILLE) PUTNAM  Dalton, Berkshire County

He is 38 MA and works in the paper mill, Ophelia Young is 24 NY, Lillian 4 MA and Alice A. 1 MA. He is a son of Marcus and Phebe Putnam, and was at home with them in 1850 in Blanford, Hampton County. His widowed mom is listed next. He was born in Dalton April 29, 1831, and married Ophelia here January 17, 1855. He will be in Westfield in 1870.

 

PHEBE PUTNAM  Dalton, Berkshire County

She is Phebe Rouse, Jonathan Marcus’ widow from Hampden County in 1850. Some of the kids are around. She is 54 CT, Lucy M. 16 MA, Rufus E. 14 MA. Everyone but Rufus is working the mills. Her other sons Charles and James are presently in Springfield, Hampden County. Marcus was a son of David Putnam from here in Becket. He died in 1855 in Becket. Phebe will be in Westfield with her son Joseph in 1870 and back here in Pittsfield with her son Charles in 1880.

 

HENRY PUTNAM  Dalton, Berkshire County

The last of Marcus’ and Phebe’s kids. He is 18 MA and works on a Smith farm.

 

WILLIAM K. PUTNAM  Great Barrington, Berkshire County

He is a tailor 36 CT, Phebe 27 NY and Charles W. 2 MA. He was single here in 1850. He is a son of William B. and Lorinda Putnam. William B. was the son of John Putnam and Hannah Dillings from Hartford Connecticut. This is part of the ‘Other’ family from Yorkshire England that came to Connecticut in the late 1700s. He will be here through the 1880.

 

HENRY PUTNAM  Hinsdale, Berkshire County

He’s number 2250 and has been here all his life on the same farm. He is now 58 MA a farmer, John 16 MA. He has some hired help from England and Ireland. His wife Eliza died in 1856, and he too will die here in 1863. All the older kids are gone. Gals are married I guess, and both Wolcott and Henry Harrison are in Warren, Jo Davies County, Illinois.

 

HENRY PUTNAM  Lee, Berkshire County

He is a paper maker 32 MA, Clarissa (Clarinda Page Ingalls) 30 MA. He is a son of Jonathan and Reliance Putnam, and was in Pittsfield in 1850. They were married December 8, 1851. They will be in Adams in 1870 and in Franklin County in 1880..

 

WILLIAM H. (HENRY) PUTNAM  Andover, Essex County

He is 35 MA, Caroline E. Jenkins 33 MA, Ira 5 MA and Charles H. 1 MA. He is a son of Israel Putnam (1945) and Mary Hawkes of Andover. They will be here in 1870 as well. He is a merchant.

 

ALFRED PUTNAM  Andover, Essex County

He is now a baker 58 MA, Harriet Shattuck Bradley is 54 MA. He is a son of Amos Putnam (1776) and Desire Felton of Danvers. Been here a while, will still be in 1870 when he will be keeping a boarding house.

 

GEORGE L. (LEVI) PUTNAM  Andover, Essex County

He is 22 VT and a student, probably at Phillips Andover. He is a son of John Putnam and Roxanna Howard from Grafton Vermont. He will be married by 1870 and a school superintendent in Mobile, Alabama. They are in Bodie California by 1880.

 

ASA T. (TAPLEY) PUTNAM  Beverly, Essex County

He is 29 NH, Mary E. Gentler 28 NY, Asa P. 6 MA and Sarah L. 3 MA. He is a son of John Putnam number 2204. He was born December 8, 1829 and married Mary here in Beverly on June 6, 1852. They will move to Lynnfield and then to Wenham where he will remain farming.

 

JOHN PUTNAM  Beverly, Essex County

Here in 1850. He is a shoemaker 58 MA, Huldah F. Cressy is 55 MA, and John H. (Henry) 23 MA. Also still here are Benjamin Cressy 61 MA and his wife Eliza 61 MA. John is number 1783, a son of Edmund Putnam (737) of Danvers.

 

FRANK H. PUTNAM  Bradford, Essex County

He is 20 NH, a shoemaker, boarding with a Perkins family.

 

RUFUS PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is a farmer 60 MA, Abigail Proctor is 61 MA, and Elizabeth E. 28 MA. He is number 2012, and was in Salem in 1850.

 

WILLIAM PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is 56 MA, Augusta Friend 51 MA, Martha L. 18 MA and William Rufus 15 MA. He is number 2014 and was in Beverly in 1850. He lives next door to his brother Rufus.

 

WILLARD PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is 58 MA, a farm laborer and has a daughter Cornelia 25 MA. Best I can figure is that he is number 2000, son of Timothy Putnam (837) of Danvers. But that Willard should be about 64 now. Only thing is that he did have a daughter Martha Cornelia. If this is him, he had married Elizabeth Goodale who has died.

 

MARTHA PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

She is 25 MA and a servant to Mary P. Hunt 53 MA who lists herself as ‘Lady.’ She would be Martha Page Putnam, daughter of Alfred Putnam number 2043.

 

AUGUSTUS PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is a farmer 50 MA, Abbie (Abigail Ann Bower) 48 MA, Abbie B. 23 MA, Charles H. 20 MA, runs an ice cart, John B. 18 MA, a bank clerk, Edward B. 14 MA, and James O. 11 MA. He is number 2018, and was born here, son of Simeon 845.

 

SARAH PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

She is 60 MA and lives with John (34 MA) and Margaret (36 MA) Hall.

 

J. W. (JAMES WELLINGTON) PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is a Universalist clergyman 37 NH, Harriet Osborne, his wife, 27 MA, Eliza O. (Osborne) 3 MA. And James H. (Herbert) 1 MA. They also have an Irish servant, Mary Kelley.

 

HARRIET A. PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

She is a tailoress 30 MA and lives with Daniel & Sarah Ann (33 MA) Baker. She was here in 1850. She, Sarah and the following Hannah are all daughters of Elbridge Gerry Putnam number 1999.

 

HANNAH E. PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

She is 24 MA, a tailoress. She lives next door with Alfred and Nancy P. (42 MA) Fellows.

 

ADRIAN PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is in the next house. He is a ‘gardener (retired)’ 57 MA, Fannie (Frances Flint) is 63 MA, Adrian L. 24 MA, a school teacher, James B. 23 MA a shoe maker, Mary Frances 22 MA. Also there are his son Otis F. 27 MA a milkman, and his wife Adeline 20 MA. Also Samuel Flint 67 MA, Fannie’s brother. He is number 2001.

 

GUSTAVIS PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He lives in the fourth house on the street, and is number 2002, another of Timothy’s sons. He is a shoe cutter 50 MA, Ruth (Colcord) is 54 MA. Also there are their daughter Ellen 27 MA, her Husband Henry A. Perkins 36 MA and their kids George H. 12 MA and Charles P. 4. Since Ellen was single in 1850, only young Charles is hers.

 

ANDREW PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is a mariner 53 MA, Elizabeth Pope, his wife, is 54 MA, Sarah 23 MA, Eugene 21 MA, Harriet A. 18 MA and Louisa 16 MA. Also there are John and Martha Proctor and their daughter Martha. She isn’t his daughter, so don’t know how they fit in, if at all. Andrew is number 1525.

 

EDWIN F. (FRANCIS) PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is number 2073, and now runs a shoe shop. He is 50 MA. He was married to Olivia Woodbury who died October 28, 1856, and he is now remarried (February 1, 1860) to Lucinda N. Preston. She is 38 MA. At home are Addison W. (Webb) 22, also in a shoe shop, Albert F. (Francis) 19 MA and Edward A. (Austin) 15 MA. His daughter Ellen Olivia 24 MA is there along with her husband Ruel Whitehouse 22 MA and their son Frederick 3 MA.

 

EBEN PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is number 856, and is now on wife number 3. He is 75 MA and runs a grocery store, Sophia (Mrs. Sophia Clement) 53 MA. His daughter Mary Ann (2079) a school teacher is 38 MA. Also there are his son Franklin Weston (2084) 28 MA, his wife Mary Wilson 25 MA and their daughter Carrie Lillian 1 MA.

 

JOEL PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is a shoe manufacturer 47 MA, Fidelia Poor his wife is 44 MA, Melvin B. 15 MA, Daniel P. 13 MA and Fidelia 10 MA. He is a son of Elias Putnam (1775) and Eunice Ross.

 

HENRY F. (FLINT) PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

Number 1528 son of Jesse Putnam, and is a shoe manufacturer. He is 46 MA, Sarah D. 25 MA and Clarence H. 2 MA. A lot happened since 1850. Wife and kids all up and gone away, divorce probably. He is now married to Sarah Cressy and has a new son. They will head off to Iowa and have a son there in 1865 and then be in Kansas City, Missouri about 1868, and be there in the 1870 census.

 

NATHAN PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

Nathan is 27 MA, Martha P. is 24 MA. They live with Sarah R. Philaber (?) 43 MA. Nathan is Nathan Tapley Putnam, son of John Putnam number 2204. He married a cousin, Martha Tapley here February 28, 1858.

 

ALBERT PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is a shoe manufacturer 41 MA, Louisa R. 32 MA, Louisa Josephine 13 MA, Eleanor Restieaux 11 MA, Albert Sewell 9 MA, William Preston 7 MA, Phillip Austin 5 MA, and Henrietta Madeline 3 MA. He is number 2066, a son of Samuel Putnam (855) and Polly Herrick of Danvers. He married Louisa Restieauax Kent in Wenham November 11, 1845. He has lived here all his life, but was in Beverly in 1850.

 

THOMAS M. (MEADY) PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is number 2065, another son of Samuel (855). He is a shoe cutter 43 MA, Eunice L. Cram, his wife, is 45 MA, Flora Louise 12 MA, Agnes S. 5 MA, Webster F. 3 MA, and Clarence A. 11/12 MA.

 

SETH PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is number 1979, and is now 79 MA. He is living with Samuel and Polly (54 MA) Wallis. Polly is his daughter. His wife Polly died in 1856, he will die here in 1864.

 

GEORGE A. (ADAMS) PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is a shoe manufacturer 52 MA, his third wife, Lydia Preston, is 40 MA, Angeline 24 MA, Lucinda 12 MA, Mary 3 MA. Also there is Elizabeth Preston 32 MA, Lydia’s sister. He is number 2060, another one of Sam’s sons.

 

JAMES A. (AUGUSTUS) PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is 67 MA, and lives with George and Mary (30 MA) Clark and their family. His wife Sarah Marston has died. He is number 2236, a son of Dr. Archelaus Putnam (962) and Nabby Bishop. He was born December 1, 1792 and will die April 14, 1864.

 

ALFRED W. (WALTER) PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is another shoe manufacturer 28 MA, Madalene 25 MA. They live with David and Abbie (27 MA) Shattuck. He is a son of Alfred number 2043 and Mary Page of Danvers.

 

MOSES PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is number 851, a son of Stephen Putnam (317) and Susannah Herrick. He is now 84 MA, Betsy (also a Putnam) 77 MA. Also there is their daughter Susan H. Putnam (2047, widow of Daniel Franklin Putnam 1539), and her children Daniel Franklin Jr. (3187) 20 MA and Eliza 25. Really kept this family in the Putnam family. He will die here this coming September, Betsy will hang in till 1864.

 

MARY PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

She is 72 MA, Henry A. (Alonzo) 32 MA a shoe manufacturer, and Aaron Foster and his wife Elizabeth 35 MA. She is Mary Herrick, widow of Samuel Putnam (855) who died here in 1856. Henry (2070) and Elizabeth (2069) are their children.

 

DEBORAH PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

She is Deborah Brown, widow of Simeon Putnam number 845. She is now 78 MA, and has some boarders. In 1850, she was living with her son Augustus. Her husband died back in 1834. This is her last appearance in the census stuff. Probably lived into her early 80s.

 

LEAFEY F. PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

She is Leafey Francis 55, widow of Aaron Putnam number 2017. Also there are William C. Putnam 22 MA and Fidelia Putnam 20 MA. The two kids are children of her sister Mary Francis Putnam, who was the widow of Edward Putnam number 2019. Looks like Mary has died too, and the two families kinda consolidated.

 

SIMEON A. (AUGUSTUS) PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is a son of Simeon Putnam (2016), and is an expressman just like his dad. He is 28 MA, Angelina 26 MA, Benjamin F. 10 MA and Clarence L. 6 MA.

 

JOHN P. (PHILLIPS) PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is a teamster 40 MA, Ethel (Bethia Parker Dodge) is 35 MA and Joanna 8 MA. They have boarders. They were in Beverly in 1850. Bethia will be widowed in Everett, Middlesex County in 1870 and have Joanna, then married, with her.

 

JOHN A. (AUGUSTUS) PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is a trader 39 MA, Martha Richards 27 MA, George C. 10 MA, Martha P. 4 MA, Mary B. 2 MA and Alice R. 6/12 MA and there are boarders. He is a son of James Augustus Putnam (2236). He was born February 15, 1821 and will die here in Danvers January 5, 1899. He married Martha September 27, 1847 in Wenham. She was born June 14, 1823 and will die here May 28, 1897. Her ‘original’ first name was Adaline, but she had it changed to Martha March 17, 1841. Martha is a Putnam some 4 generations removed. They were in Wenham in 1850.

 

I. (ISRAEL HERBERT) PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

Number 2021, son of Simeon Putnam (845). He is now 41 MA, a shoe manufacturer, S. C. (Sarah Caroline Putnam) 38 MA, Laura M. 14 MA, Carrie W. 9 MA and Austin H. (Herbert) 7 MA.

 

SIMEON PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

Number 2016, son of Simeon 845. He is an express man 55 MA, Harriet Whittier 49 MA, Mary W. 19 MA, Lydia F. 16 MA (she wasn’t listed here in 1850 and will be in the Danvers State Hospital for the bulk of her life.), and a son Wallis P. 10 MA.

 

JOSEPH C. PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

Indexed as James, but this is Joseph a son of Phineas Putnam (1991). He is now 48 MA, Louisa Roberts 48 ME, and Louisa R. 14 MA. They have some help.

 

JOHN C. PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

Another son of Phineas Putnam (1991). He is a shoemaker 42 MA, Louisa Knight is 39 ME, Samuel C. 15 MA, John F. 14 MA, Sarah M. 12 MA, Ella L. 7 MA, Florence 5 MA, Melissa 4 MA, Charles M. 3 MA and Carrie E. 4/12 MA. He sure doesn’t waste his free time, only missed a couple of years without a new kid.

 

CALVIN PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

 He is number 1529, son of Jesse Putnam. He is now 44 MA, Mary Putnam Pope is 41 MA, Alvira A. (Adelaide) 18 MA, Alice M. 15 MA, Alonzo Calvin 15 MA. Also there are James and Lydia Rinkin. No clue who they are. But, Adelaide and Alice are daughters of his brother Henry (1528). If you look back you will see Hank has a new wife and son. Don’t know if Henry’s wife Harriet Pope died or they got divorced, but the kids are here. Harriet and Mary were sisters. Then the story gets better. In 1850 Calvin was just a carpenter. Well now he joined in with his wife’s brother and the have a lumberyard called Putnam and Pope here in town. Sooner or later, Calvin will take over the whole thing and call it Calvin Putnam Lumber Company with holdings in Maine and all over the place.

 

LYDIA PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

She is a public school teacher 31 MA and lives with Nathan (63) and Eliza (50) Tapley and their family.

 

CHARLES O. (ORIN) PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is a son of Orin Putnam. He is a shoe finisher 23 MA, Mary Ann 23 MA (Nova Scotia in 1870), Addie 2 MA and Clarence 1/12 MA. Also there is Joseph Crosby 8 MA.

 

SARAH J. PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

She is 32 MA and lives with Harriet P. Adams 72 MA. She is a daughter of the next listed Philemon Putnam, and was at home in 1850 with them.

 

PHILEMON PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is now 70 MA and again a mariner after a long career with the Franconia (NH) Iron Works. His second wife, Mary Clark Noyes is 43 NH, Eliza L. 29 NH, Lucy M. 16 NH, Fannie 14 NH. Also there is her mother Selinda Noyes 70 MA.

 

MATTHEW PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is now 75 MA and his wife Hannah Giddings has died in 1856. He is still living with his son Orin, or Orin is with him and has been since the 1840s. I’ll give Orin his own listing next. Matthew is number 1993, a son of Matthew Putnam (835) and Ruth Smith of Danvers. He will die here in 1872 at age 87.

 

ORRIN PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He lives with his dad Matthew Putnam. Orin is a farmer 47 MA, Sarah Nurse 48 MA, George F. 21 MA, Adelaide (Adeline in 1850) 19 MA, Horace G. 16 MA, Albert E. 14 MA, Edward A. 9 MA, Ella F. 8 MA. Also there is John E. Cary 10 MA. Orin’s other son Charles is nearby and now married.

 

EUNICE PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

She is Eunice Ross, widow (and has been for a while now) of Elias Putnam (1775). She is now 71 MA. Her son Arthur A. is out of Law School and is 30 MA, his sister Ellen M 27 MA.

 

JAMES F. (FRANCIS) PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is a shoe cutter 19 MA and lives with Edmond and Harriet LeGroo, also a shoe maker. Harriet is his sister. He is a son of Israel Putnam and Mary Hawkes. He was home in Reading in 1850. He will die here in 1866.

 

B. P. (BETSY PEABODY) PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

She is Betsy Peabody Cross, widow of Eben Putnam number 3066. She is now 57 (think it is really 52) MA and has Harriet 23 MA a public school teacher and Hiram B. 20 MA a student at home. She was widowed here in 1850 as well with these two kids.

 

JESSE PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is number 636. He is now 82 MA and still farming, Elizabeth Merriam is 75 MA. He will die here on February 10, 1861. Elizabeth will hang in till 1887 when she will be 96 years old. Their son John and his family are living with them, but I’m going to give them the next separate listing.

 

JOHN M. (MILTON) PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is Jesse’s son, and is 32 MA, Martha Ann Brown 23 MA, Lizzie (Elizabeth Merriam) 1 MA and “Child” (turns out to be Lucy Amelia) 4/12 MA. John is number 1535, born here March 1, 1828 and married Martha March 18, 1836. He will take over his dad’s farm and be here the rest of his life.

 

FRANCIS PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He lives next door, and is Francis Perley (1527) and is another son of Jesse Putnam (636). He is now 49 MA and still in the shoe biz, Pamelia Upton is 45 NH, Helen A. 18 MA, Clara E. 16 MA and Mary C. 8 MA.

 

LUKE PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is a farmer 58 NH, Abigail Snow Stearns 50 NH, Maria Ann 25 NH. He is number 1175, son of Samuel Putnam (466) and Ruth Spencer of Charlestown, NH. Actually I believe Luke was born in Weathersfield, Vermont during the period his folks lived there. He was in Acworth, Sullivan County, New Hampshire in the 1850 and here through the 1880.

 

BETSY PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

She is now 71 MA and still lives with Sylvanus and Lydia Swan. Sylvanus is her brother in law, but through his first wife Mary Ann Putnam. They were all here in 1850.

 

WILLIAM R. (RICHARDSON) PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

He is a farmer 49 MA, Ruby K. Griffin, his second wife, is 33 MA, Maria P. (Phelps) 17 MA, Robert W. (Winthrop) 15 MA, and William H. (Herrick) 12 MA. Also there are his mother Susanna Putnam 83 MA, and his sisters Emma Kettell 59 MA and Susan Putnam 47 MA a school teacher. William is number 1542, a son of Daniel Putnam (641) and Susannah Putnam (852). He was born here in Danvers May 23, 1811 and will die in Minnesota September 8, 1886. He first married Mary Phelps who died in 1850, and then married Ruby in 1854. He has been farming in Wenham, but was missed in the 1850 census. He returned to his folks place in the early 1850s. He will be here until about 1879. Ruby will die in 1873, he will marry Sarah Phelps in 1879, and will head out to Red Wing, Minnesota where his son William went in the late 1860s. He will be there till he dies in 1886. His son will be there through the 1920 census.

 

WILLIAM PUTMAN  Danvers, Essex County

He is now 63 MA, and a farmer, Hannah 57 MA, John 21 MA, Henry 17 MA and James 15 MA. He is number 3063, a son of Ebenezer Putnam (1451) and Lydia Putnam. He was born here in Danvers August 7, 1797, and will die here in 1886. He married Hannah V. Goss here January 23, 1836. They were here in 1840 and 1850.

 

ASA & EUNICE PUTNAM  Danvers, Essex County

They are two unmarried children of Asa Putnam number 1716. They were together in 1850 also. Asa is now 50 MA, Eunice 60 MA, though she was listed as 80 MA. Handwriting again. Also there is James Hutchinson 49 MA. Asa is a shoemaker.

He is another son of Asa Putnam (1716) and lives next door to his brother Asa junior. Robert is now 54 MA, a shoe manufacturer, Mary Hutchinson is 53 MA, Eunice 27 MA, William 23 MA and Almira 20 MA.

 

PUTNAMS  South Danvers, Essex County

This southeastern part of Danvers was split off as a separate town in the 1850s, and in 1870 will be renamed as Peabody as it still is today. Peabody had large numbers of tanneries that operated well into the mid 1900s.

 

TIMOTHY PUTNAM  South Danvers, Essex County

He is a farm hand 28 MA. He is a son of Alfred Putnam who was a son of Amos Putnam (1766). In 1850 he was living with his uncle Amos. Folks must have died along time ago.

He is a painter, 25 MA and boarding.

 

DAVID PUTNAM  South Danvers, Essex County

He is number 1056, been here all his life. He is now 62 MA, and still farming, Mary Davis 61 MA, John 29 MA, a shoemaker, and Laura J. 18 MA. They will be here in 1870 as well.

 

HARVEY (HERVEY) PUTNAM  South Danvers, Essex County

He is a stone maker 42 NH, Amanda Bunker 35 ME, Anna (Amanda in 1850) 16 MA, David 12 MA, Mary E. 10 MA, Lewis 7 MA, Viola 5 MA. Also there is Eliza Preston 26 ME. He is number 2363 and was here in 1850. But in 1870 looks like things go downhill. Harvey is back home with folks David and Mary (listed above), Amanda and the kids are here on their own. Looks like a divorce to me.

 

JOSEPH W. (WARREN) PUTNAM  South Danvers, Essex County

He is a grocer, 37 MA, Harriet Galucia his second wife is 23 MA, and Charles W. 2 MA. Also there is Eben Twist 25 MA a clerk. He is number 2366 a son of David Putnam and Mary Davis from here and was married here in 1850. He was married to Sally Galucia then. She died in 1853 and he married her sister Harriet Galucia in 1857 and had the son Charles. They live with this folks. I don’t find them in 1870.

 

CHARLES H. PUTNAM  South Danvers, Essex County

He is a shoemaker 26 MA, Georgiana Burrows is 22 MA. They were married in Lynn on May 18, 1859. They are in Saugus in 1870, but in 1880 Georgiana and two daughters will be in Saugus. She lists herself then as being widowed. He would be a son of David Putnam and Mary Davis here in town. In 1850 he was simply listed Henry age 16, and that Henry is not at home now. Gotta be what Charlie’s middle name was.

 

NATHANIEL PUTNAM  South Danvers, Essex County

Number 2368, and was married here in 1850. He is a milk dealer 31 MA, Sally Galucia is 28 MA, Urilla J. 7 MA. They have three boarders. They will be here in 1870.

 

J. (JEREMIAH) PUTNAM  South Danvers, Essex County

Jeremiah Junior is still here and is now 57 MA and still dealing in leather, Sarah N. Lord is 49 MA, Joseph P. 27 MA a clerk, Thomas L. 17 MA. Also there is Sarah’s mother, Sarah Lord 77 MA, and an Irish servant.

 

D. W. (DANIEL WEBSTER) PUTNAM  South Danvers, Essex County

He is number 2356, 42 MA, his sister Maria is number 2355 46 MA. They are unwed kids of John Putnam (1052). They were home here with their mom in 1850.

 

AMOS PUTNAM  South Danvers, Essex County

He is 52 NH and has some Irish help. His two spinster sisters have moved out or moved on. He is Amos junior, son of Amos 1766. He never married.

 

CALVIN PUTNAM  South Danvers, Essex County

He is 60 NH, and is boarding with Nilla Hix 57 NH. He just pops up here for the first and last time anywhere in New England. My best guess is that he is number 1944, a son of Aaron Putnam (791) and Phebe Farnum of Lyndeborough, New Hampshire. Now to kinda complicate things, I think the Calvin in Ohio in 1840 and 1850 is this guy. He married Belinda Bryant there and right now (1860) she and the kids are in Hancock County, Ohio and will be through the 1880 census at least. He is either divorced or out here on some errand. He will not appear again anywhere. Good luck on this one.

 

JEFFERSON PUTNAM  South Danvers, Essex County

Number 2285. He is now 55 MA a sash maker, Judith Lampher 51 MA, Thomas Jefferson 21 MA (listed as 80, but we know that’s wrong) a stone cutter, Mary B. 18 MA a pocketbook maker, Sarah C. 16 MA a pocketbook maker, Rebecca M. 15 MA, Charles H. 8 MA, James L. 11 MA and George T. 9 MA. Jefferson will die here in 1864, and Judith will be here widowed in 1870.

 

ALFRED PUTNAM  Haverhill, Essex County

He is a shoemaker 25 CAN, Ann Jane Cavenor is 21 IRE and they have Mary E. 1 MA. According to his marriage record his folks were Dennis and Julia Putnam.

 

DOLLY PUTNAM  Haverhill, Essex County

She is Dorothy Bailey, widow of Benjamin Putnam number 1980 who died in 1850. Dolly is now 83 MA, and has George Bailey 41 MA and his wife Mary Bailey 26 MA with her.

 

JOHN PUTNAM  Lawrence W2, Essex County

He is 66 NH and runs a boarding house, Mary Frye is 59 MA and Augusta is 28 MA. He is a son of Joseph Putnam (1870) of Wilton, NH. He was in Lowell in 1840 and got ignored in 1850. He was married to Sabrina Wiley, who must have died. Mary seems to be a new wife and Augusta a stepdaughter. He will die here in Lawrence in 1868.

 

CARRIE PUTNAM  Lawrence W4, Essex County

She is 32 ME and listed with pages of people, and calls herself an ‘operator.’ I think she was the one in Orono, Maine running a boarding house in 1850.

He is a shoe manufacturer 50 MA, Mary Ann Smith 37 NY, John T. 10 MA and William 3 MA. He is a son of James Putnam (1670) and Betsy Richardson.

She is 7 or 9 MA and living with Benjamin Somebody, can’t figure out the name.

She is 31 MA a boot stitcher, and boarding with Calvin Stephens. She will be here in 1870 boarding with someone else. She is a boot stitcher, and a daughter of James Hervey Putnam (3068) and Mary Williams of Gloucester.

 

NATHANIEL T. (TUCKER) PUTNAM  Lynn W4, Essex County

He is a son of Benjamin Whipple Putnam (3067) who is the guy listed next. He is an expressman 38 MA, Caroline C. Knight 31 NH, Frances 10 MA. Also there is Ann Knight 58 NY, who is her mother.

 

BENJAMIN W. (WHIPPLE) PUTNAM  Lynn W4, Essex County

He is a bookkeeper, and is now 59 MA, Mary D. Tucker is 58 MA, Eliza L. 33 MA. Also still here is Henry Pierce 33 MA an expressman. He is number 3067, a son of Joseph Putnam (1465) and Mercy Giddings Whipple.

 

FRANKLIN PUTNAM  Lynn W3, Essex County

He is 56 MA and a ‘Gentleman.” He is boarding with his sister Catherine Story. He is a son of Nathaniel Putnam (1916) and Hannah Pindar of Danvers. His folks were in New York City from the late 1830s. In 1850 Franklin was with his cousin Albert Putnam in Brooklyn, New York.

 

JEREMIAH R. (REED) PUTNAM  Methuen, Essex County

He is now 47 MA, Rebecca M. Chadwick 45 MA, Jeremiah R. 29 MA, a hatter, Lucy (Ruth in 1850) 23 MA a hat trimmer, John C. (Luke in 1850) 20 MA also a hatter, and Hezekiah L. 17 MA, a laborer. They were married here in 1835 and have been here since. Jerry will die in the next several years, and Rebecca is widowed in Lawrence in 1870.

For some reason the town wasn’t indexed in 1860, But folks like Peter Putnam (1756) and even his mom Eunice Endicott are around here.

Been here a while. Aaron is a son of Ward Putnam (1940) and Sarah Leatherbee Shaw. He is now 50 MA and a farm laborer, Rebecca Wells is 54 MA, Mary A. 17 MA, Caroline 15 MA, Emma 9 MA.

 

REBECCA PUTNAM  Newburyport, Essex County

She is 44 MA, has a Hattie or Albert 6 MA and Daniel Ryan 10 MA. Hard to read the writing. She is Rebecca Blanchard, widow of John Putnam (2394) who died at sea February 21, 1851. No idea who the kids are.

 

JOHN P. (PIERSON) PUTNAM  Newburyport, Essex County

He is a shoemaker 26 MA, Hannah 27 MA, Grace W. 5 MA, Inez G. 3 MA and Mary H. 2 MA. He is a son of the above Rebecca and John Putnam (2394) and Rebecca Blanchard.

 

HANNAH PUTNAM  Newburyport, Essex County

She is 62 VT (MA) and has Deborah Greely 61 VT (MA) with her. They are daughters of Caleb Putnam (1904) and Hannah Russell. Both were born in Danvers. Deborah had married William Greely in 1825, and it looks like he has since died. She will be in Stoneham in 1870 and die there in 1874.

 

JOSEPH PUTNAM  Newburyport, Essex County

He is a blacksmith 66 MA, Patience is 68 NH. He is number 1069, a son of Billings Putnam (413). Patience Wiley is his second wife, they were married back in 1834. She will die in June 1870, and just miss that census report. They missed the 1850 like so many people in Essex County, but was here nonetheless. He will be here until he dies in 1873.

 

FRANKLIN PUTNAM  North Andover, Essex County

He is a shoemaker 31 MA and boarding with a Mary Gould. Based on a marriage record, he will marry Julia Worthen in Haverhill on September 26, 1860. It also states his folks were Levi Putman and Betsy Fisk. Can’t figure them out though. They are in Harmony, Rock County, Wisconsin in 1870 and 1880.

 

HANNAH L. PUTNAM  North Andover, Essex County

She is 47 MA, a shoe stitcher, George L. 11 MA. They are living with her father Simeon Flanders. They were here in 1850. She is Hannah Leavitt Flanders, the widow of Israel Washington Putnam, a son of Israel Putnam number 1945.

 

JOHN P. (PICKERING) PUTNAM  North Andover, Essex County

He is number 1977, a son of Samuel Putnam (823), and was in Boston in 1850. Still a merchant, he is 47 MA, Harriet Upham 40 MA, Mary U. 16 MA, Harriet 15 MA, John A. L. (Amory Lowell) 13 MA and Sarah G. (Gooll) 10 MA. Also 5 Irish folks as help.

 

FRANCIS PUTNAM  Salem W1, Essex County

He is number 2234, a son of Eben Putnam (960) and Elizabeth Fiske. He is now a florist (gave up the book selling biz) 52 MA and his wife Alice Upton has died. His son Henry W. is here and is listed as 42 MA, but since he was listed as 7 in 1850, I would trust this age it should be around 14, as he is 24 in 1870. At any rate, he is clerk in his dad’s shop. His wife’s sister Annie Upton 35 MA is still there and is a teacher. Then there is Charles A. Putnam 32 MA, a civil engineer, living with them. He is Charles Appleton Putnam, son of Ebenezer Putnam number 2228 of Salem. Francis and Eben were brothers.

 

JOSEPH P. PUTNAM  Salem W2, Essex County

He is 22 MA, a dry goods merchant. He lives with Lydia Webster. He is a son of Jeremiah Putnam and Sarah Lord of Danvers. He was at home there in 1850.

 

MARY E. PUTNAM  Salem W2, Essex County

She is Mary E. Whitney, widow of Perley Zebulon Montgomery Pike Putnam, who was a son of Perley Putnam number 2200. He died at sea September 9, 1849. She is now 42 MA, Mary E. 19 MA, Perley 17 MA, a seaman like his dad, Rebecca A. 12 MA, Francis T. 10 MA, Alden R. 9 MA and George G. (Granville) 8 MA. The last two children belong to her brother in law, John Preston Putnam whose wife Helen also died in 1852. John Preston Putnam is at sea, but will show up back here in 1880 by himself.

 

PERLEY PUTNAM  Salem W2, Essex County

He is number 2200, and is now 81 MA and works at Street Maintenance. His wife Betsy Preston has died, but his daughter Mary Ann 55 MA is still single and at home. Also there is Ellen Brown 18 MA a domestic helper.

 

JOHN F. (FISKE) PUTNAM  Salem W5, Essex County

He is number 2230 and is now a Master Mariner and is 60 MA, Sarah Ann Duncan is 49 MA, George D. is 25 MA a clerk. Then there are David Moore 48 MA, his wife Martha 35 MA and their daughter Helen 8 MA. Martha is not a Putnam, but might be a Duncan, otherwise there is no family relationship that I can see. They are here in 1870, and George has a wife then.

 

ISRAEL PUTNAM  Salem W5, Essex County

He is number 893 and been here forever, and still runs his grocery shop. He is now 87 MA, Mary Lindsey is 75 MA. Also there is Phebe Milliken 45 ME.

 

SARAH PUTNAM  Salem W6, Essex County

She is 25 MA and is rooming with William and Lucy Saunders. She is a daughter of William and Lucy Putnam from Beverly. Lucy Sanders is her sister. Their parents died before 1850.

 

JAMES H. (HERVEY) PUTNAM  Salem W6, Essex County

He is number 3068, a son of Joseph Putnam 1465. He is a Provisions Dealer 45 MA, Margaret M. Goodwin his second wife is 37 ME, and James H. Jr. 16 MA. James was originally married to a Mary Williams who died in 1834, and he had two daughters. In 1850, he was living with his father Joseph here in town and did not have a son James then. He married Margaret McNeil (a widow, ne: Goodwin) March 29, 1853. I think that young James is only 6 years old and is a son of James Senior and Margaret. If he is really 16, then dad was playing around, and no one wanted to mention it in the 1850 census. I vote that he is really only 6 years old now. He doesn’t appear in the 1880, so no way of really checking yet. Margaret will die in 1868 and James will then marry Ellen Harris, a widow of a Whirling man and was from England. They got married in 1871.

 

CHARLES F. (FISKE) PUTNAM  Salem W6, Essex County

He is number 2231, been here all his life. He is now a horticulturist, a move up from the nurseryman that he was in 1850. He is 57 MA, Sarah Sage his wife is 50 MA, William S. 25 MA, John S. 20 MA. Also there is his brother George Putnam (2232) who is 55 MA and still runs his drug store here in town. George never married, and has been boarding recently.

 

AMOS P. (PERLEY) PUTNAM  Salem W6, Essex County

He is a son of Amos Putnam number 2202. He is now 48 MA, Mary Ann Gomez is 35 MA, Anna G. 15 MA and Louisa M. 12 MA. He was a grocer in 1850, but has now taken up carpentry for a living.

 

DAVID PUTNAM  Salem W4, Essex County

Number 2201. He is now 80 MA and lists his occupation as Gentleman, Sarah Abbott is 78 MA. They have Mary Mulligan 25 IRE helping out.

 

GEORGE F. (FRANKLIN) PUTNAM  Salem W4, Essex County

George is 29 MA, Sarah Bicket Hunt, his new bride, is 25 MA. He is number 2057, a son of Jacob Putnam (854) and Susannah Silver. He was born here July 28, 1831. He married just Sarah here July 19, 1860. He’s a farmer, and they have two Irish gals with them. They will be here with kids in 1870.

 

JACOB PUTNAM  Salem W4, Essex County

Jacob is now a farmer 78 MA, Susannah Silver is 60 MA, James S. 38 MA, a merchant, and Caroline 25 MA. They have two servants. He is number 854, been here and will be here till he dies January 18, 1866. Susannah will hang in till 1872.

 

NATHAN PUTNAM  Salem W3, Essex County

He is 62 MA, a wood and coal dealer, Caroline Messer, his second wife, is 39 MA (NH in 1850), Nathan junior 8 MA, Augustus (Charles in 1870) 5 MA, Ruth 3 MA. They also have a servant, Ellen Wilson 21 NH. He is a son of Nathan Putnam number 2199.

 

WILLIAM H. A. (HENRY APPLETON) PUTNAM  Salem W3, Essex County

He is a mariner, 28 MA and boarding with a Sarah Gardner. He is a son of Eben Putnam (2228) and Elizabeth Appleton from here in Salem. He will soon be marrying Elizabeth Gardner, so I assume Sarah is her mother.

Mary is 53 MA, Elizabeth 51 MA, a seamstress. No one else is listed. Mary is number 3345, a daughter of William Putnam (1668) and his second wife Polly Putnam. No idea on Elizabeth.

 

ALLEN PUTNAM  Salem W3, Essex County

He is a city assessor 66 MA, Lizzie (Eliza Page) 65 MA, Mary 26 MA, Norman 7 MA. He is a son of Thomas Putnam number 2192, and was born here in Danvers December 12, 1794, and will die here in 1868. He has never made a census before. He was a sea captain before becoming a Port Collector. Never found his wife or family either. Just popped up here to make his only appearance.

 

CYRUS PUTNAM  Saugus, Essex County

He is a carpenter 53 NH, Mary 49 ENG, Alice L. 14 MA, Mary S. 9 MA, and Kate B. 4 MA. They are here again in 1870. Absolutely no thoughts here.

 

MARIA A. PUTNAM  Saugus, Essex County

She is now 30 MA and a cigar maker. She is a daughter of Samuel Putnam and Rebecca Patch. She was here at home with them in 1850.

 

CHARLES L. (LOVELL) PUTNAM  Saugus, Essex County

Another son of Sam and Rebecca. He is a carpenter 26 MA, Elizabeth Palmer Harriman 32 NH, Marion, a son, 7/12 MA. He was here with his folks in 1850 and will be here in 1870 as well.

 

JESSIE (JERRIE?) M. PUTNAM  Wenham, Essex County

He is a shoemaker 25 MA and is boarding with S. L. Edgecomb. He is the Jeremiah who was here in 1850, and will be again in 1870. He is a son of William Putnam (1780) from Beverly.

 

BENJAMIN C. (CLAYTON) PUTNAM  Wenham, Essex County

He was here in 1850 (son of Benjamin 1980) and is a state rep from Wenham. He is 40 NH, Elvira Dudley 38 MA, Minnie A. (Elvira in 1850) 13 MA, Frank O. 13 MA, Anne J. (Hannah in 1870) 8 MA, and an Irish servant. They will be in Chelsea in 1870 and he will remain there till about 1886, move to Danvers and die there in 1888.

 

ISRAEL PUTNAM  Bernardston, Franklin County

He is a son of Israel Putnam (1347) and Ruth Wilkins of Guilford, Vermont. Israel is a farmer 49 VT, Maria H. Wagner 48 MA, Francelina (Amelia in 1850) 20 MA, Ellen M. 19 MA a teacher, Eliza Jane 16 MA and Mary R. L. 10 MA. Maria will die shortly, and he will marry Laura Hurd October 21, 1868.

 

DANIEL PUTNAM  Orange, Franklin County

Number 1817. He is 62 MA, Sophronia Chamberlain 51 MA, Mary Ann 16 MA, William A. 14 MA, Louellen E. 10 MA and Sally Putnam 65 MA. Sally is his sister, number 1814. She is single and will die here in January 1865. Daniel too will die before 1870. Sophronia will be here through the 1870s, then be in North Adams, Berkshire County in 1880 with her daughter Louella who is the married to George Poole.

 

MARY S. PUTNAM  Orange, Franklin County

She is Mary Merriam, the second wife and now widow of John Putnam number 1820. She is 45 MA and has her daughter Alice S. 13 MA with her.

 

SARAH E. PUTNAM  Orange, Franklin County

She is 30 MA and has Ella Countryman 5 NY and Georgia Countryman 2 CT with her. Best guess is that she is a daughter of John Putnam (1820) and his first wife Abigail Cook. The kids probably belong to her sister Catherine who is missing here. Pretty sure on the first guess, grabbing at straws on the second one.

 

FREDERICK PUTNAM  Orange, Franklin County

He is a son of William Putnam (1819) and Julia Holden and was in Wendell in 1850. He is a lumber dealer 41 MA, Marietta Young is 37 MA, Kate 11 MA, Winifred 6 MA, and Roscoe 2 MA. Her mother Achsah Young 60 MA is living with them.

 

DANFORTH PUTNAM  Orange, Franklin County

Another son of William and Julia. He is a farmer 45 MA, Susan E. Fiske is 31 MA, William D. (Danforth) 15 MA, James J. (Josiah) 13 MA, Edgar W. (Walton) 11 MA, Lester C. (Clark) 8 MA, Henry C. (Clarence) 4 MA and Minnie Viola 3 MA. There will be three more by 1870.

 

NATHAN B. (BOND) PUTNAM  Orange, Franklin County

He is 33 MA, Isabel P. Hammond, his wife, 27 MA and they have Charles W. (Warrington) 3 MA. He is another son of William and Julia. He was born April 27, 1827. He married Isabel January 30, 1855.

 

WARREN W. PUTNAM  Orange, Franklin County

He is 22 MA, a day laborer, Joanna Mahanna 19 VT. He is a son of Danforth Putnam and his first wife Martha Porter.

 

JOSEPH K. (KELLOG) PUTNAM  Orange, Franklin County

He is number 1827, son of Joseph Putnam and Hannah Kellogg. He is now 47 MA, Sophia Bishop 44 NH, Angelia Marie 11 MA and George W. (Warren) 9 MA. Also there is Preston Bishop 64 NH, Sophia’s dad. Joseph will die here in 1866, and the son George will die in 1869. Sophia will be here though in 1870.

 

AMOS PUTNAM  New Salem, Franklin County

Number 760. He is now 81 MA, Rhoda Childs 71 MA. Then there are Royal Whitaker 44 MA,, his wife Angelia F. 45 MA and a Louella Noyes 19 MA. Not sure who they are, though they will be here in 1870. Rhoda was married to a Smith before marrying Amos. Angelia is probably her daughter. Amos will die here in January 1867.

 

SAMUEL PUTNAM  New Salem, Franklin County

He is Samuel Varney Putnam, number 1838, born back in Danvers just before his father Amos moved out here. He is now 58, a farmer, Elizabeth Felton Richardson is 55 MA, Willard 21 MA, Abram 15 MA. Also there is Ebenezer Felton 72 VT.

 

DANIEL V. (VARNEY) PUTNAM  New Salem, Franklin County

Number 1841, youngest of Amos’ kids. He is 46 MA, a farmer, Cleopatria Bryant 46 MA. They never had children. Also there is H. L. Felton 68 MA. In 1870 her name comes up as Hepzibah Felton. Then there are Charles Peckham 20 MA and Catherine Peckham 15 MA. Don’t know them either.

 

TARRANT PUTNAM  New Salem, Franklin County

Number 1815, son of Daniel number 750. He is now 59, a mechanic, and still a widower. His son Walter Tarrant 25 MA and his wife Mary L. Bliss 20 MA are living with him. Both guys will have died by 1870. Mary and a new son will be living with her folks then.

 

BENJAMIN PUTNAM  Warwick, Franklin County

He is Benjamin Ganson Putnam number 1826, son of Joseph 752. He has moved from Orange and is running a hotel here. He is now 50 MA, Sylvia J. Smith 50 MA, Sophronia S. 26 MA, Theodore C. 19 MA, a farmer, Benjamin W. a clerk 17 MA, Joseph A. 15 MA, Sylvia J. 12 MA, and Sarah B. 9 MA, plus some boarders. They will be in Grand Rapids, Michigan in a few years.

He is 34 MA, a farmer, Abby P. (Abigail P. Hammond) 29 NY and Julia 4 MA. He is a son of William Putnam (1819) and Julia Holden of Orange, and now of right here and coming up next.

Also there are his son Edwin 29 MA, Dianna Titus 19 VT his wife, and her brother Joseph Titus 24 VT and his wife Julia 23 MA. Julia is a daughter of William and Julia. Had sort of a double wedding ceremony here recently. He was born July 7, 1792 in New Salem and will die in Orange May 18, 1877. He married Julia August 14, 1814. She was a daughter of Nathan Holden and Abigail Whiting and was born in Petersham March 31, 1796. She too will die in Orange September 30, 1881. They will be back in Orange in 1870. Kids will be everywhere around here.

 

TIMOTHY PUTNAM  Leverett, Franklin County

He is a farmer 43 MA, Sarah Field his wife 42 MA, Roswell 20 MA. Also there is a Mary Noble 13 MA. He is number 3126, a son of Rufus Putnam number 1493.

 

PHEBE PUTNAM  Leverett, Franklin County

Phebe Williams is the widow of Rufus Putnam (1493). She was here in 1850 and will be in 1870. She is now 68 MA, and still lives with her daughter Susan Ashley 35 MA and her husband Myron Ashley. Same again in 1870.

 

JOHN PUTNAM  Greenfield, Franklin County

He is a barber 43 MA, Julia 42 MA, Joseph 15 MA, Charles 13 MA, Ida 12 MA, James 10 MA, Anna 7 MA, Ben 5 MA, and Helen 3 MA. This is a black family, and they were here in 1850 and will be again in 1870.

 

WILLIAM PUTNAM  Buckland, Franklin County

Number 1315, son of William number 530. He was born here and is now 72 MA, Lurany Shepard, his wife, 71 MA.

 

ZILPHA PUTNAM  Shelburn, Franklin County

She is 71 VT and lives alone. No thoughts here.

 

ALFRED PUTNAM  Ludlow, Hampden County

He is 14 MA living with Hiram Stillman. He is a son of Flavious Putnam and was at home in Springfield in 1850. His folks are just over the border in Windsor Locks, Connecticut now.

 

AMOS PUTNAM  Ludlow, Hampden County

He is number 1498, and is now 71 MA and lists himself as farm labor. He is a son of Abner Putnam (616) and Abigail Waters. Still outside working away. He still lives with his daughter Abigail and her husband David Atchinson. In 1850, his wife Susan Miller was with another daughter Susannah, and she is still there now. I hate to be a rumor monger, but now that they have been living apart for over 10 years, maybe they are separated or something. Don’t know except they are both buried together here. He’ll still be here in 1870.

 

ZADOCK P. (PORTER)  PUTNAM  Palmer, Hampden County

He is 41 MA, a farmer, Lucia C. 47 CT. They were here in 1850. He lives next to Susan coming up next. I believe him to be a son of Amos Putnam (1498) and Susan Miller. I don’t find him in 1870, but in 1880 he is boarding in Easthampton, Hampshire County and states he is still married. Lucia is boarding in another place and also says she is married.

 

SUSAN PUTNAM  Palmer, Hampden County

She is Susan Miller 64 MA and is living with her daughter Susanna and her husband Avery W. Green (both about 43 MA). She is/was the wife of Amos Putnam. They have been apart with separate children for a decade now. I kinda feel like there was a divorce. She will die by the 1870.

 

JAMES A. (ANDREWS) PUTNAM  Springfield, Hampden County

He is 39 NH, a stonemason, Hannah Holt 38 NH and they have Ellen M. 9 MA. They will be in Consumne, El Dorado County, California in 1870. He is a son of Joseph Putnam and Sally Shattuck of Lyndeborough, New Hampshire. They were in Lawrence, Mass. Prior to heading out here.

 

JOHN C. PUTNAM  Springfield, Hampden County

They were here in 1850. He is now 47 MA, a laborer, Julia Buxton his wife is 40 MA, and Ellen A. is now 14 MA. He is a son of James Putnam and Marcia Cox. James was a son of Abner Putnam (616) and Abigail Waters from Ludlow. Julia will die in early 1870 and he will be widowed here in 1870.

 

CHARLES H. (HENRY) PUTNAM  Springfield, Hampden County

He is 24 MA (VT) and living with Orville P. Wilson. Rand Putnam dug up several records. In this entry Orville has a daughter Mary E. age 18. Charles married her on May 22, 1860 and the census was done on July 20. That’s why he appears in the middle of the list of names with Mary next to him, as they were married at the time. Then the marriage certificate states he was born in Vermont and his father’s name was Charles. So, he is a son of Charles Putnam as shown in 1850 in Halifax, Windham County, Vermont. Then the bad news. He’ll die here in 1863.

He is listed 25 CND, a painter, and is boarding with Charles Winchester.

 

SOPHIA PUTNAM  Springfield, Hampden County

She is 67 MA and lives with Joseph L. Pepper. She is Sophia Blair, widow of James Putnam number 1736. In 1850, she was in Warren, Worcester County living with her daughter Maria and her husband Joseph Lorring Pepper. Joseph is married to her daughter Maria. She will still be here in 1870.

 

THOMAS PUTNAM  Springfield, Hampden County

They were here in 1850. He is a machinist 45 MA, Harriet C. Blood, his wife, is 38 NH, Harriet A. 7 MA, Anna L. 3 MA. Also there are his mother Dolly 75 MA and sister Clara 29 MA. Dolly is Dorothy Park, widow of Benjamin Putnam number 1058. She and Clara were in Waltham, Middlesex County in 1850. Thomas is number 2377, and obviously a son of Benjamin number 1058. He will die in the 1860s, and Harriet will be here widowed.

 

JAMES PUTNAM  Springfield, Hampden County

He is James Albert Putnam, a carpenter, 23 MA and his wife Palmyra is 20 VT. He is another son of Marcus and Phebe, and was in Blanford in 1850 with them. His brother Charles is around here also. His mom and the other kids are in Dalton, Berkshire County. He will be killed in the Civil War.

 

HORACE PUTNAM  Springfield, Hampden County

He is number 2175, a son of Cyrus Putnam (921) and Lucinda Hathaway of Sutton, and was here in 1850. He is now 51 MA, a sash and Blind maker. His wife Clarinda Boyce had died July 18, 1858, and he has a new wife, Louise who is 45 CT. Kids at home are Maria 28 MA, Jennie 27 MA, William 22 MA, Anna 18 MA and Julius (looked like Julia in 1850) 16 MA. The kids Silas and Emma are missing in this census.

 

GEORGE PUTNAM  Amherst, Hampshire County

He gets two listings. Age 17 MA a laborer with Samuel Bince or Brice, and also at age 18 MA a laborer with Lorenzo Pomroy. He is George Libbeus Putnam, a son of James Allen Putnam and Betsy Chapin from Becket. He was with his widowed mother in Palmer, Hampden County in 1850.

 

HIRAM B. PUTNAM  Amherst, Hampshire County

He is a student at Amherst College, 24 (should be 21) MA. He is a son of Ebenezer Putnam (3066) and Betsy Peabody Cross of Danvers. He was home there in 1850.

 

WILLARD PUTNAM  Amherst, Hampshire County

He is a student at Amherst College, 21 MA. He is Willard R. Putnam, son of Archelaus Putnam (2166) and Laura Nichols. In 1850 he was at home in Holden, Worcester County

 

GRANVILLE BRADSTREET PUTNAM  Amherst, Hampshire County

He is a student at Amherst College, 24 MA. He is number 3188, a son of Ahira Herrick Putnam (1540) and Sarah Bradstreet. He was at home with mom in Boston in 1850. He was born in Danvers August 27, 1835. He’s going to marry the daughter of the president of Amherst College, Jane Elizabeth Hitchcock, in 1864 and become a teacher in Boston.

 

FRANCIS PUTNAM  Easthampton, Hampshire County

He is a machinist 27 MA, Mary Emeline Parker is 28 MA, Frank 3 MA, and George 1 MA. His sister Clarissa 23 MA is with him. These two were living in Shirley, Middlesex County in 1850. They are children of Eben Putnam number 2382 and his first wife Mary Fletcher.

 

CYRUS PUTNAM  South Acton, Middlesex County

He is a farmer 63 MA, Louisa Rand 56 MA, John 25 MA an engineer, Martha A. 19 MA a tailoress. He is number 1710, a son of Asa Putnam (706) and his second wife Catherine Evelith. He has been here a while, but by 1870 Louisa will be widowed here.

 

DENNIS PUTNAM  South Acton, Middlesex County

He is 65 MA a laborer, and lives with Jonathan and Hepzibah Piper. He will still be here in 1870. He is number 1709, a son of Asa Putnam (706) and Catherine Eveleth of Stow. He also looks like the guy in Elyria, Loraine County, Ohio also listed as single in this 1860 census. Probably a dual listing out visiting a daughter. He is back here in 1870 though.

 

JONAS PUTNAM  Bedford, Middlesex County

He is a son of Jonas Putnam and Hannah Evans of Bedford, New Hampshire. He is now 48 NH, Emeline Tenney his wife is 46 MA. Emeline will be widowed in Arlington in 1870 and in Salem by 1880.

 

HANNAH PUTNAM  Bedford, Middlesex County

She is Hannah Evans, widow of Jonas Putnam Senior. She is 70 MA and lives with Jonathan Lane.

 

W. (WILLIAM) A. PUTNAM  Bedford, Middlesex County

He is number 2387, a son of Ebenezer Putnam (1059) of Medford, Mass. He is still a landlord, and is 40 MA, Mary Ann Smith, his wife, is 39 MA. They have a bunch of boarders.

 

ASA G. PUTNAM  Billerica, Middlesex County

He is 25 NH a laborer, Sophronia 27 MA, Herbert 11 MA and Lester B. 9 MA.

 

LUCY PUTNAM  Brighton, Middlesex County

She is 41 MA a servant with Calvin and Mary 45 MA Smith. Mary is her sister. They are daughters of Benjamin Putnam (1058) and Dolly Park from Waltham. She is here in 1870.

 

BENJAMIN PUTNAM  Cambridge W2, Middlesex County

He is a seaman 42 MA, Ella his wife is 41 MA, Hiram 20 MA also a seaman, John 5 MA and William 1 MA. He looks like number 2378, a son of Benjamin Putnam (1058) and Dorothy Park. He was single in Brighton in 1850, so it looks like Ella was married before and Hiram would be hers. I don’t find any of them after this census.

 

CHARLES PUTNAM  Cambridge W1, Middlesex county

He is 36 MA and boarding.

 

GEORGE PUTNAM  Cambridge W3, Middlesex County

He is a glassmaker 45 MA. His wife Mary Ann Burdakin is 39 MA. The have a daughter L.M. (Louisa) 19 MA, daughter M.E. (Mary Elizabeth) 18 MA, son G. S. (George) 15 MA an apprentice glassmaker, daughter H. F. (Harriet Frances) 10 MA, Marcellus 8 MA and Mary Eaton 65 MA who is his twice widowed mother in law. He is a son of Lewis Putnam. He was born in Boston, will be here in 1870 and then move to Reading by 1880 and stay there till he dies in the 1880s.

 

JOHN PUTNAM  Cambridge W2, Middlesex County

He is a chemist 35 MA, Lucy his wife is 32 MA, John 12 MA, Frank 7 CA, and George 1 MA. Also here is Andrew Crosswell 40 MA an Episcopal Clergyman and his wife Catherine 28 ME, and their kids James 7 MA, Simon 5 MA and daughter Jessie 1 MA plus 4 ‘unidentified’ people.

 

JOHN P. PUTNAM  Cambridge W5, Middlesex County

He is 35 MA an express track manager. Probably runs a trolley car. Lene his wife is 32 MA, and they have John 12 MA, Frank 7 MA, George 1 MA and two servants. Obviously a dual listing here. Anyway, both these guys are John Prince Putnam, and his wife is Lucy Farnsworth. He is number 2916, a son of Mason Putnam (1326) and Alona Holbrook. He was born in Dover, Mass, his father lives in Boston. They were in next door Somerville in 1850 and will be with his folks in Winthrop, Maine by 1870.

 

MEHITABLE PUTNAM  Cambridge W2, Middlesex County

She is 80 MA, and lives with Anna Davis 58 MA and her family. Anna would be a widowed daughter of hers I would imagine.

 

ALLEN PUTNAM  Charlestown, Middlesex County

He is 50 NH, Martha Foss, his wife, is 48 NH. They were here in 1850 as well. He is a son of Gideon Putnam number 1877 from Cheshire County, New Hampshire. Been down here since the early 1830s.

 

BETSY PUTNAM  Charlestown, Middlesex County

She is Betsy Sampson Thayer, widow of Gilbert Putnam number 1055 who died back in 1820. She is now 70 MA, her daughters Betsy (#2358) 46 MA, Joanna (#2359), and son George Sampson (#2361) and George’s daughter Helen A. 18 MA are still at home. By 1870, Mom will have died, but everyone else will still be here.

 

CLARA A. PUTNAM  Charlestown, Middlesex County

She is 22 NH, and lives with Susan Johnson.

 

HARRIET PUTNAM  Charlestown, Middlesex County

She is 48 NH and lives with Cynthia Russell. Cynthia and Harriet are daughters of David Putnam and Hannah Bailey from Charlestown, New Hampshire. They were both in Acton in 1850 with a third sister Louise.

 

KATE W. PUTNAM  Charlestown, Middlesex County

She is 17 NH, a seamstress, and lives with George Thompson. She is probably connected to the above Allen, but that is of little help.

 

ISRAEL PUTNAM  Chelmsford, Middlesex County

He is 55 MA, Mary Lindsey 45 MA, Israel L. 21 MA, Mary 17 MA, Sarah Lee 13 MA. They have two workers living with them. He is number 2124, a son of Jonathan Putnam (331) and his second wife Hannah Worcester. Now an interesting aside. Mary Lindsey was born May 4, 1815 in Marblehead and her parents were Richard Lindsey and Lois Devereaux. She was adopted by Israel Putnam (893) and Mary Lindsey who was a daughter of Nathaniel Lindsey and Sarah Lee.

 

HENRY E. (EVANDER) PUTNAM  Chelmsford, Middlesex County

He is a milkman, 32 VT, Mary Jane (Parkhurst) is 38 VT. Henry married a widow, Mary Jane, in 1854 here in Chelmsford. She has two Parkhurst children with her, Amos 17 VT and Sarah J. 12 MA. She was married to Amos Parkhurst, don’t know her maiden name. Henry is a son of George Washington Putnam and Lucinda Hills of Andover, Vermont. George was a son of Peter Putnam number 1842.

 

LAURA A. & LIZZIE PUTNAM  Groton, Middlesex County

Laura is 30 NH a milliner, Lizzie is 28 MA also a milliner. They are both daughters of Osgood Putnam number 2122.

 

OSGOOD PUTNAM  Groton, Middlesex County

He is number 2122, a son of Joseph Putnam number 892. He is 58 MA a farmer, Rhoda Hall 52 NH, Julia A. 29 MA a dress maker, George S. 24 MA, Israel B. 22 MA a wine maker, Martha L. 19 MA a dress maker, William H. 17 MA, Amos B. 14 MA, and two servants. I don’t find the family in 1870 but they are here. By 1880, Rhoda will be a widow here.

She is 58 MA and lives with Benjamin Dix. She will be here in 1870.

He is number 3370, a son of Nathan Putnam number 1681 and Rhoda Gates of Wendell. He is a mechanic 58 MA, Mary Pond Guy, his wife is 47 MA and Mary E. 19 MA is still at home.

 

DANIEL F. (FRANCIS) PUTNAM  Hopkinton, Middlesex County

He is 31 MA, a boot maker, Nancy T. Buxton, his wife, is 27 MA, and they have Frank 5 MA. He is number 2952, a son of Royal Putnam (1352) and Mary Ann Seaver of Westborough.

 

MASON PUTNAM  Holliston, Middlesex County

He is number 1326, and is now 75 MA and a ‘gentleman’, Sophia B. Wood his second wife is 71 NH and their ‘spinster’ daughter Sarah E. is 49 MA. They were in Boston in 1850. They will be in Winthrop, Maine by the 1870 census, and he will die there in 1872.

 

ALONZO PUTNAM  Lowell W2, Middlesex County

He is 38 NH a carpenter, Olive 35 MA. Then there are Eliza 55 MA, Alonzo 27 NH, Hannah 23 MA, John 25 VT, Eliza 24 VT and Mary 22 VT who are listed next, but are in the same house. I know who Eliza is, but no ideas at all on this Alonzo and Olive.

 

ELIZA PUTNAM  Lowell W2, Middlesex County

She is Eliza Parmeter, the wife, or ex-wife it seems of Alonzo Putnam from Cavendish, Windsor County, Vermont. They were all there in 1850. He is in New Hampshire now and will be in Vermont as late as the 1880. She’ll still be here in 1870. Eliza is 55 MA, Alonzo (junior) 27 NH, Hannah 23 MA (who is Alonzo’s wife. Think her actual name is Frances Derby), John 25 VT, Eliza 24 VT, Mary 22 VT.

 

ADAM PUTNAM  Lowell W3, Middlesex County

He is number 1711, a son of Asa Putnam (706) of Stow. He is a soap maker 62 MA, Nancy Puffer, his wife, is 45 MA, Caroline C. 25 MA and Lucy H. 22 MA. They have an Irish servant girl. Nancy will be widowed here in 1870.

 

ADDISON PUTNAM  Lowell W3, Middlesex County

He is number 3438, a son of the above Adam and Nancy. He was listed as Augustus in 1850. He is a clothing dealer 35 MA, Hannah B. Tarbell, his wife, is 32 NH, Frank P. 11 MA, Lillian J. 10 MA, Addison Junior 6, MA. Also there is Emily Puffer, a spinster, 53 MA. She is his mother’s sister.

 

EDWARD PUTNAM  Lowell W4, Middlesex County

He is a carpenter 49 MA, Roxanna Davis his wife 48 MA, Lydia 12 MA, Davis (Winthrop Davis) 23 MA, Roxanna 21 MA and Andrew 15. MA. He is number 2161, a son of Edward Putnam (913) and Lydia Howard of Sutton. The son Winthrop Davis will receive the Congressional Medal of Honor in the Civil War. Here is the entry. “PUTNAM, WINTHROP D.
Rank and organization: Corporal, Company A, 77th Illinois Infantry. Place and date: At Vicksburg, Miss., 22 May 1863. Entered service at: Peoria, Ill. Birth: Southbridge, Mass. Date of issue: 4 April 1898. Citation: Carried, with others, by hand, a cannon up to and fired it through an embrasure of the enemy's works.”

He is a mill hand 26 NH and is living with Ann Moulton 56 NH.

She is a seamstress 45 VT and lives with Nancy Holmes 49 VT and her family.

 

NELLIE PUTNAM  Lowell W5, Middlesex County

She is 23 NH and bording. She is a daughter of Perley Putnam and Mary Jane Cole. She is also listed with her brother Perley back in Guilford, New Hampshire.

 

PERRY PUTNAM  Lowell W5, Middlesex County

Lorenzo Perry is a pattern maker 40 NH, Lucy Harris his second wife is 38 MA, Alfred 17 MA, Warren 13 MA, Clara 4 MA. Also there is Lucy’s mother Lucy Harris 63 MA. He is a son of John Putnam and Sabrina Wiley and a grandson of Joseph Putnam number 1870. They were here in 1850 and will be in 1870 and 1880. Perry had married Clarissa Maria Brocklebank on November 25, 1841 in Ipswich. She died here in Lowell May 21, 1849. He then married Lucy Harris, and will be here with her through 1880. Lucy had married Joseph Bean in Andover in 1844, and Warren born in 1846 was their child. He changed his name to Putnam. His death certificate in Boston states his parents were Joseph Bean and Lucy S. D. Harris.

 

PATTY PUTNAM  Lowell W5, Middlesex County

She is 65 MA and has a Jennie Butterfield 12 MA with her. They live with James White and his family.

 

ROBERT W. PUTNAM  Lowell W6, Middlesex County

He is a mill hand 25 MA and boards with a Webster family. He is a son of John Putnam and Sabrina Wiley. He will get married, go to Kansas and be there in 1870.

 

JACOB D. PUTNAM  Lowell W6, Middlesex County

He is 31 NH, Eliza Rust Clough 29 NH, Emma D. 6 MA and Frederick 3 MA. He is a son of Timothy Putnam and Rachel Dascomb of Lyndeborough. He married Eliza Clough in 1853. They will be here in Lowell through the 1880 census.

 

GEORGE F. PUTNAM  Malden, Middlesex County

 He is 20 MA, a druggist, and is boarding. He is a son of James Hervey Putnam (1193a) and was born here in Malden. His mom is listed next.

 

HENRY L. (LOCKE) PUTNAM  Malden, Middlesex County

He is number 2405, a son of Joseph Putnam and Elizabeth Danforth of Newburyport. He is 34 MA, a blacksmith, and is now widowed as his wife Mary Jane Cochrane is missing here. Henry’s sons are Joseph Henry 12 MA and Charles S. 7 MA. Also here are his mother in law Margaret Cochrane 56 NS, and her daughter Susan 18 NS. There is also another blacksmith boarding here. He will be married to Mary Eliza Wood here in 1870.

 

JOSEPH PUTNAM  Malden, Middlesex County

He is another son of James Hervey Putnam. He is 23 MA, a teamster, and is boarding.

 

MARY PUTNAM  Malden, Middlesex County

She is Mary Hill, widow of James Hervey Putnam number 1193a. She is 53 MA, and her children at home are Isaac 29 MA a tin plater, Julia 16 MA, Sarah 13 MA and Ellen 8 MA.

 

CHARLES PUTNAM  Marlborough, Middlesex County

He is 43 MA, a physician, Catherine F. Ingraham, his wife, is 41 MA, Herbert E. 15 MA, Julia F. 10 MA, and Cora B. 11 MA. He is number 3118, a son of George Washington Putnam (1485) and Priscilla Wheeler of Grafton. He was here in 1850 and will be again in 1870.

 

FRANKLIN LEWIS & ALBERT HENRY PUTNAM  Marlborough, Middlesex County

He is a son of Lewis Putnam (3106) and his second wife Almira Parker. He was home with them in nearby Westborough in 1850, and will still be here in 1870. He is 16 MA, his brother Albert H. is 10 MA. They are living with John E. Curtis. Their mom died back in January 1850, but I have no clue where dad is. Lewis won’t be dying here until March 3, 1885. The John Curtis they are living with is their sister Jane Maria’s husband. She’s here too.

 

ELIEL PUTNAM  Medford, Middlesex County

He is number 2121, a son of Joseph Putnam (892) of Middleton. He is 58 NH, a master Teamster. He was here in 1850, but his wife Elizabeth Lewis has since died. His kids are Elizabeth J. 13 MA, Ellen A. 9 MA, Edward E. 4 ME. He has a housekeeper and another teamster living with him.

 

CAROLINE L. PUTNAM  Medford, Middlesex County

She is 34 VT, Edward Beecher Putnam is 9 MA. Caroline Stone is the widow of Edward Putnam, also from Vermont, and was in Malden in 1850. He died in Malden January 10, 1851. They had a son Charles who also died in Malden in 1854. They have a boarder. Don’t find her in 1870, but she is still widowed in Boston in 1880.

 

CHARLES PUTNAM  Medford, Middlesex County

Number 2384. He is now widowed and living in an Alms House. He is 50 MA and lists himself as ‘gardener’, term for retired. He was a doctor in past reports. Either he is helping out here, or the practice wasn’t very lucrative. He will still be here in 1870.

 

SETH H. & ALFRED P. PUTNAM  Natick, Middlesex County

Seth is a shoemaker, 28 ME. Also there is Alfred P. Putnam 18 ME, also a shoemaker. Katherine Mason 26 ME and her son Emmet 5 ME are there as well. Kinda surprised to see these folks down here. Seth Harris Putnam is a son of Israel Putnam and Ruth Walton of Rumford, Maine. Alfred looks like the son of Seth’s brother Horatio Gates Putnam, but that Albert is still shown at home back in Rumford. So no thoughts on him and absolutely no thoughts on Katherine. Seth is going to head back to Maine, and marry Athanlinda Philbrick and then in about 1866, they will head off to Bountiful, Utah and settle into the Mormon community out there. His brother Simeon Walton was here in 1850, and Seth may well have been here then too. Both brothers were missing in the 1850 of Maine.

 

H. B. PUTNAM  Newton, Middlesex County

He is 21 MA, an assistant teacher, and is boarding. He looks to be Hiram Brainerd Putnam. He is a son of Ebenezer Putnam (3066) and Betsy Peabody Cross of Danvers. He was home there in 1850. He is also listed at Amherst College now.

He is number 2125, a son of Joseph (892) and Nancy Putnam of Chelmsford. He was married to Elizabeth Sherman, but is widowed, or at least without her as she was here in 1850. He is a farmer 54 MA, his son Joseph 17 MA, a Railroad depot master is at home. There are also two live in help. He has been here since the 1820s. He will be in Franklin, Norfolk County in 1870.

 

JENNIE PUTNAM  Pepperell, Middlesex County

She is 19 MA and lives with three Chapman people about her own age. She works as a paper cutter.

 

HENRY PUTNAM  North Reading, Middlesex County

He is 46 MA, a stable keeper, Elizabeth Ann Long, his wife, is 41 ME, Ann S. 10 MA, George H. 9 MA, Mary A. 3 MA and there is a George S. Monroe 19 MA with them. He is a son of Joshua Putnam (2089) and Nancy Graves of Reading. They were here, but overlooked, in 1850 and will be again in 1870. Mom is listed next.

 

NANCY PUTNAM  North Reading, Middlesex County

She is Nancy Graves, widow of Joshua Putnam number 2089. She is 68 MA a schoolteacher, and lives by herself.

 

DANIEL PUTNAM  Reading, Middlesex County

He is a son of George and Betsy Putnam, and a grandson of Israel Putnam number 877. He is 68 MA, a farmer, his mother Betsy is 75 MA and a seamstress, his sister Betsy is 43 MA.

 

FRANKLIN PUTNAM  Reading, Middlesex County

He is number 1810, a son of Joshua Putnam (748) and Betsy Baker of Houlton, Maine. They have been here since the 1840s. He is a merchant 46 ME, Mary L. Rice his wife is 41 ME, Mary 17 MA a music teacher, Franklin L. 16 MA a clerk, Dwight R. 13 MA, Elizabeth L. 10 MA, George F. 5 MA, John H. 3 MA and William 1 MA. Mary Ann will have died, but the rest of the family will be in Minneapolis in 1870 and onwards.

 

HENRY E. PUTNAM  Reading, Middlesex County

He is 23 NH, a cordwainer, and boarding. He is a son of Abiel Abbott Putnam and Mary Ann Radden of Wilton, New Hampshire. He was home in 1850 and will be here married in 1870.

 

HANNAH S. PUTNAM  Reading, Middlesex County

She is 60 ? MA (VT?) a seamstress, and is boarding with Jonathan Heselton. Best guess is that she is number 3362, a daughter of Robert Putnam (1672) of Windsor County, VT. Her sister Betsy had married an Ephraim Hesselton, and so this Jonathan looks like kin of sorts. Only a guess.

 

ALBERT PUTNAM  South Reading, Middlesex County

He is 19 VT, a carpenter’s apprentice, and is boarding with a Turnbull family. Best guess is that he is a son of the following Ephraim. In 1850 the family only used initials, but had a son with initials A. T. age 10 or 11. A. T. is missing from the family now. Don’t be mislead by the VT, it can just as easily be MA as they constantly made errors in the census reports. He will be in Michigan by 1880.

 

BERNARD PUTNAM  South Reading, Middlesex County

He is 21 MA, a shoe pegger, and is boarding with Mark Whitney. This may be the missing son from Ephraim’s family.

 

EPHRAIM PUTNAM  South Reading, Middlesex County

He is Ephraim Abbott Putnam, a son of John Putnam (1884) and Mary Herrick of Wilton, New Hampshire. He has been here since the 1830s. He is a cordwainer 52 NH, Ruth Louise Burnham, his wife, is 45 MA, Anna L. 24 MA a seamstress, Ella E. 13 MA and George A. 7 MA.

 

LEWIS PUTNAM  Somerville, Middlesex County

Number 1177, a son of Samuel Putnam and Ruth Spencer of Charlestown, NH. He is 47 NH, Susan Stanley his wife 40 MA, Susan Fay 22 MA, Lewis S. (Stanley) 13 VT (MA in 1850) and George S. 16 MA. Susan is their daughter and has married Charles Fay who is off somewhere. He will be here with the rest of these folks in 1870. Lewis seems to be a man of many trades. In 1850 he was an innkeeper. Now he is a veterinary surgeon, and will be still in 1880 when he is in North Cambridge.

 

JOSEPH B. (BILLINGS) PUTNAM  Wilmington, Middlesex County

He is 43 MA a blacksmith, Sarah Hayward Bickum, his wife, 37 MA, William H. 16 MA an apprentice blacksmith and Sarah E. 14 MA. He is number 2401, a son of Joseph Putnam (1069) and Elizabeth Danforth of Newburyport. They were here in 1850 as well. In 1870 they will be in Wilmington, Delaware (for some reason), then will return here.

 

FANNY PUTMAN  Winchester, Middlesex County

She is 13 MA and lives with Henry Chapman.

 

M. LOUISE PUTMAN  Winchester, Middlesex County

She is 26 MA and an Irish gal living with her.

 

SUMNER S. (SARGENT) PUTNAM  Woburn, Middlesex County

He is 26 NH, a patent leather manufacturer, and boarding with William McDonald. He is a son of Israel Putnam and his first wife Ruth Sargent of Lyndeborough, New Hampshire. He was there at home in 1850.

 

WILLIAM RUSSELL & ISRAEL PUTNAM  Woburn, Middlesex County

More children of Israel Putnam and Ruth Sargent. William is 38 NH, a patent leather manufacturer, his wife Martha Jane Avery is 27 NH, and Emma A. 8 NH. His brother Israel is 33 NH also a patent leather manufacturer. William was the actual inventor of Patent Leather (that shiny black stuff. He started a factory that will grow to be quite large. He will be here the rest of his life now. His brothers will head back home to New Hampshire though.

 

N. (NEWELL) F. PUTNAM  Townsend, Middlesex County

He is a cooper 30 MA, Sarah Ann Troke his wife is 28 MA (should be around 35 ME), Abby H. 6 MA (born April 11, 1855) and Albert H. 2 MA (born March 21, 1858). He was single in 1850 living in Marlborough, and will still be here till he dies. Rand found a birth record that Newell was a son of Asa Putnam (1708) and Eunice Smith. I don’t ever find that family, but they would be around here someplace. His dad Asa’s folks were from Stow and Sudbury, Middlesex County before that. He was born in Lunenburg, Worcester County March 29, 1829 and will die in Townsend on December 26, 1901. His wife Sarah was born October 2, 1825 in either Calais, Maine or just over the border in St. George, New Brunswick Canada. She will die here in Townsend December 19, 1904.

 

GEORGE PUTNAM  Roxbury W4, Norfolk County

Number 1523. He is a Clergyman 52 MA, Elizabeth Ware his wife is 51 MA, Caroline 23 MA, Anna E. 21 MA, Henry W. 13 MA. Also there are his son George Junior 25 MA and his new bride Harriet Lowell. George married Harriet June 9, 1860. He has recently graduated from Harvard Law and will be in the legal profession in Boston the rest of his life. Young George will be in Canton in the 1870. There are also four servants listed here.

 

JAMES F. PUTNAM  Stoughton, Norfolk County

He is a boot maker 27 MA, Sylvia A. is 26 MA.

 

CHARLES O. PUTNAM  Canton, Norfolk County

He is a son of John Putnam and Sabrina Wiley and was born in Amherst. He is a merchant 34 MA (it is NH), Melinda is 29 MA (born in Northampton), Alice (Helen A. in 1870) 6 MA and Fidelia C. 1/12 MA. They will be in Boston in the 1870.

 

GEORGE PUTNAM  Franklin, Norfolk County

He is 32 NY a factory worker in a cotton mill with his dad, Mary Jane Shepardson his wife 31 MA, Mary 9 MA, Emma 7 MA and Flora 4 MA. They were in Holliston, Middlesex County in 1850. They will be in Boston in 1870, and Greenville South Carolina by 1880. He is a son of the following Thomas Putnam.

 

THOMAS H. PUTNAM  Franklin, Norfolk County

He is a cotton manufacturer 61 VT (actually CT), Harriet Davenport his second wife is 49 MA, Horace 16 MA and Edgar 8 MA. He is part of the Yorkshire, England family, and a son of Thomas and Rosamond Putnam.

 

HIRAM B. PUTNAM  Walpole, Norfolk County

He too is part of the Yorkshire branch of the family, a son of William Putnam and Susan Briggs. He was here in 1850, but has gone a few times to where his father is in Hookset, New Hampshire. He is a blacksmith 35 MA, Lucy Ann Bryant, his wife, is 28 ME, Ella 7 NH, Emma 5 MA and Lewis 2 NH. They will all be in Manchester, NH in 1870.

 

BENJAMIN W. (WADSWORTH) PUTNAM  West Roxbury, Norfolk County

Number 1546. He is a merchant 34 MA, Susan Caroline Symonds, his wife, 32 MA, Caroline D. 9 MA, Charles W. 7 MA, Ella G. 4 MA, Frederick H. 2 MA, Benjamin W. Jr. 9/12 MA, and Emeline just born in June MA. Also there is his mother Susannah Putnam 72 MA. His father Daniel (641) had died in 1854, but mom will hang in there until 1869. Also there is Emma Symonds 50 MA.

 

RICHARD F. (FLETCHER) PUTNAM  Dorchester, Norfolk County

He is 27 MA, an Episcopal Clergyman, Maria S. Love, his wife, is 26 RI. He is a son of John Putnam and Adeline Joselyn of Boston. Maria will die later on, and he will marry Sarah Brock. He graduated from Brown University in 1855 and was ordained a minister in 1858. They will move to New York City where he will have a church. His wife will become an author of a great many novels.

 

ALLEN PUTNAM  Roxbury W1, Norfolk County

He is number 1538, a son of Daniel Putnam (641) and Susanna Putnam of Danvers. He is a dealer in coal and wood, 57 MA, Sarah Bartlett, his third wife, is 53 MA, Abby H. (Hinkley) 26 ME. Also there is Sarah Hayes 52 MA, and a domestic from England, Elizabeth Hudson. Also a note on all these folks in Roxbury. By 1870 it will become a part of Boston and be listed as Suffolk County then.

 

ALFRED P. (PORTER) PUTNAM  Roxbury W5, Norfolk County

He is a clergyman 35 MA. He is a son of Elias Putnam number 1775. His wife Louisa Proctor Preston is 32 MA. Louisa will die here in a couple of days on June 12, 1860. He will marry Eliza K. Buttrick of Concord on December 27, 1865. They will then head to Brooklyn, NY.

 

SILAS S. (SAFFORD) PUTNAM  Roxbury W5, Norfolk County

He is a son of Dr. Israel Putnam (2132). He is 37 NY (born in Hartford, Washington County, NY), and is a curtain fixture manufacturer. His wife Anna Maria Whitmarsh is 27 MA, Silas S. Junior is 6 MA, and Helen M. 4 MA. Also there are his mother Charlotte Safford Putnam 67 VT, his sister Charlotte Gardner 42 VT and two domestics from Ireland.

 

HARRIET J. PUTNAM  Roxbury W5, Norfolk County

She is 45 MA and boards with Henry and Maria Holman. Maria is her older sister. They are daughters of Mason Putnam (1326) and Alona Holbrook, his first wife. Harriet is number 2912, Maria number 2909.

 

NELSON S. (STEPHEN) PUTNAM  Roxbury W3, Norfolk County

He is a son of Stephen Putnam number 2125, and was born in Chelmsford. He is a clerk 27 MA, Maria Ann Clark is 23 ME, and they have George Nelson 1 MA. Also there is Lydia Patten 22 ME. They will be here in 1870 and Roxbury will then be a part of Boston.

 

JOHN J. (JAY) PUTNAM  Bridgewater, Plymouth County

He is number 1379, a son of John Putnam (548) and Mary Convese of Chesterfield, New Hampshire. He was born there May 21, 1823. He was ordained as a Unitarian Minister in 1840, and has been preaching in Lebanon, NH, and at Bolton and Petersham in Mass. He married Isabella Parkhurst in Petersham May 9, 1860 and has just arrived here. In 1865, he will leave the ministry and become an insurance agent and move to Worcester, Mass. He is listed 37 NH, Isabella P. 31 NH.

 

ISRAEL W. (WARBURTON) PUTNAM  Middleborough, Plymouth County

He is number 1022 and was here in 1850. He is now 73 MA, and still a Congregational minister, Julia Osgood, wife two, is 71 NY, Lucy M. (Mackintosh) their youngest daughter is 28 NH. Also there are their daughter Harriet Osgood 36 NH, her husband Charles Frederick Pierce 43 MA, a merchant, John C. Osgood 9 NY, and a Thayer child (couldn’t read first name) 5 NH. One of their daughters, Julia Maria, had married Alfred S. Thayer of Boston. She died August 5, 1859 and this is one of their children. Something must have happened to Alfred, as she was living here with her folks when she died. Israel will die here May 3, 1868.

 

CATHERINE PUTNAM  Boston W1, Suffolk County

She is listed as a widow 65 MA, her son Uziel is 26 MA and a painter. She is Catherine Lloyd, widow of Uzziel Putnam number 1821. She was born here.

 

RACHEL C. PUTNAM  Boston W1, Suffolk County

She is Rachel Stoddard, widow of Ephraim Putnam (1957), 63 MA, her son Thomas J. (Jefferson) is a carpenter 35 MA, and there is a Hannah King, also a widow, 52 MA with them. She was widowed here in 1850 as well. I think Ephraim died in the 1830s. All were born in Boston.

 

WARREN PUTNAM  Boston W1, Suffolk County

He is a painter, 24 born in Boston MA, Abbie his wife is 26 born in Liverpool ENG. Also there is a domestic. He is a son of Uzziel Putnam (1821) and Catherine Lloyd. They will be in New York City in 1870.

 

MARY J. PUTNAM  Boston W1, Suffolk County

She is 16 MA, born in Boston, and living with Elisa Brunswick.

 

DAVID A. PUTNAM  Boston W2, Suffolk County

He is 32 MA, a grocer. His wife Cecelia Elizabeth Fogg is 22 MA, Edward A. 2 MA, and Adelaide 9/12 MA. There are two boarders here as well. He is a son of David Putnam (1288) and Orpha Scales. He was home in East Boston in 1850. He is number 2881. They will be in Idaho by the 1880 census.

She is Orpha Scales, widow of David Putnam (1288), and is living alone at age 70 MA.

 

DANIEL A. (ADAMS) PUTNAM  Boston W2, Suffolk County

He is 34 MA a hotel clerk, Sarah Ellen Crowell 26 MA, his wife, and George A. 7 MA. He is a son of David and Orpha Putnam from here in East Boston. He is number 2880. They will be here in Chelsea in 1870.

 

GEORGE K. (KENDALL) PUTNAM  Boston W2, Suffolk County

He is number 2883, yet another son of David Putnam (1288) and Orpha Scales. He is a grocer 27 MA, Mary Elizabeth Stevens, his wife, is 27 ME, Percy 4 MA. They have a boarder Caroline Shaw 23 MA with them. George will die of injuries in the Civil War in 1864. Mary and Percy will be in Chelsea in the 1870.

He is Albert Warren Putnam number 2877, another son of David and Orpha. He is 39 MA, Amanda Malvina Cook, his wife, 34 MA, Harriet Malvina 14 MA, Orpha Anna 12 MA. He is a grocer and has been here all his life.
