They were here in nearby Dalton in 1920. His
marriage record has his parents are William and Marjorie (Bartlett) and that he
was born in Boston about 1894. He has three draft records which reveal
his birth date is 6 Apr 1893. One draft record has his birth in Boston
and the other two say Fitchburg. Alice Porter was a daughter of William and
Rose Porter of Dalton. Shewas born in Cheshire December 28, 1892 and will die
here in Pittsfield in 1976. Then I find a sheet for Alice that states “William
was abandoned as an infant at a Catholic Church and the Nuns there gave him his
name.” So he more than likely isn’t a Putnam at all. From an obituary, Winthrop
Edward was born December 21, 1923 in Dalton and will die in Pittsfield May 16,

1890s. She was his second wife. Also here are her widowed daughter Mary Dempsey

a confusing listing. I’m putting it down as shown, and then will try and explain
it. Mary is 31 MA MA MA and says she has been married since she was 19. Then
there are Shirley A. sister 7 MA, Otis F. brother 6 MA, K. Maxine sister 3 MA,
Lillian sister in law 24 MA MA CAN, Ruth A. sister in law 16 MA MA CAN and
Robert E. brother 16 MA MA CAN. Okay go back to the 1920 listing for Elmer Otis
Putnam (from Mass) and his wife Nettie Pittman (from Nova Scotia). Robert,
Lillian and Ruth are their kids. They also had a son Otis F. who would be 32
now. Then right after him was Mary and she was listed as a boarder. She just
had to be Otis’ wife. The three youngsters are not brothers and sisters, but
are children of Otis and Mary. Mary is listed earlier as being widowed and is a
matron at an old folks home. Makes sense this way. Anyway, Elmer was a son of
Otis Flint Putnam and Adeline Batchelder, and was born here in Danvers.
