MICHIGAN
CENSUS
REPORTS
1820
- 1860
UPDATED DECEMBER 9, 2011
MICHIGAN 1820-29 TERRITORIAL CENSUS
The
early Territorial Census reports simply list the heads of households with no
listing of the number of folks in the families.
Listed in 1820:
ALPHEUS PUTNAM Michigan Territory
He is
from Charlestown, New Hampshire. His wife is Saropta Dudley. He was born August
29, 1795. He'll be here through 1870, and will die in Ogallak, Kansas June 9,
1875. He is number 1172 in Eben's book, a son of Samuel Putnam and Ruth Spencer
from New Hampshire, and a grandson of Timothy Putnam and Ruth Badger. This line
goes Alpheus > Samuel > Timothy > Seth > Thomas > Thomas >
John.
Listed in 1825:
AARON PUTNAM Michigan County
He is
Arent (Dutch spelling) or Aaron Derrick Putman from Albany County New York. See
1830. Dutch family. His line goes back though Derick to Lodowyck to Arent to
Johannes the first guy of the Dutch line to come to America.
AARON PUTNAM Michigan Territory
Probably
the same guy, moving around. Not a lot of folks here at this time.
HIRAM PUTNAM Huron, Wayne & Washtenaw Counties
He is
number 1191, a son of Bailey Putnam (number 470) and Anna Bailey of
Charlestown, New Hampshire. Hiram was born March 27, 1798. He is either alone
here or possibly with his first wife whose name I do not know. He will marry
Laura Emeline Rice here October 9, 1836, and by that time had a bunch of
children by a first wife. This line goes back Hiram > Bailey > Timothy
> Seth > Thomas > Thomas > John Putnam.
JOSHUA PUTNAM Detroit, Wayne & Washtenaw Counties
Joshua
was a son of Seth Putnam and Sarah Hardin of Putnam, Ontario. He was first
married to a gal whose name is not known (had a son George). He then married
Melinda Flanagan in 1821. She died September 11, 1827, and he then married Mary
Barrows on March 29, 1828. Joshua died September 19, 1859 back in Canada I
believe. The line is Joshua > Seth > Thomas > Seth > Thomas >
Thomas > John Putnam. Joshua is number 1142 in Eben’s books.
Listed in 1829
ALPHEUS PUTMAN Michigan Territory
Been
here and will be here a long time. See the first listing for his line.
MICHIGAN 1830-39 TERRITORIAL CENSUS
In
the 1830 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10-14, 15-19,
20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc. The same will be true in 1840. From 1850 on
ages and states of birth are shown.
Listed in 1830
AUIR (ARENT) PUTNAM Dexter, Washtenaw County
Listing
is 000011 00000001. This is Arent
or Aaron Derrick Putman, son of Derrick or Richard Putman and Nelly Van Brocklin
from Stone Arabia, Albany County and then Montgomery County New York. Dutch
family. He and Alida Wilson his wife are here for a while. He will die here in
1837. This is the township they lived in, so has to be him. His line is Arent
> Derrick > Lodowyck (Lewis) > Arent > Johannes Putman.
HARRISON PUTNAM Michigan Territory
Probably
a New England guy, but I have no clue as to who he is. He too is gone in a year
or so to new parts.
HIRAM C. PUTNAM Michigan Territory
He
has been here a bit now. See earlier 1825 listing for who he is. He is from New
Hampshire.
IRA H. PUTMAN LaGrange Township, Cass County
Listed
as Ivy H. He is a son of Uzziel Putnam Jr. and was born in Wardsboro, Windham
County Vermont October 28, 1798. In 1840 he will be in Jefferson Township of
Cass County. Listing is 210011
000001. His brother Uzziel (3rd) is listed shortly, see that
listing for his lineage. He married Mary Garst in Sandusky County Ohio
September 11, 1823, or possibly she was Mary Markham. He died by 1850 (actually
1848), and his wife Polly is listed then with the kids, except for Ira J. their
eldest.
UZZIEL PUTNAM Pokagon Township, Cass County
Listed
as Huzziel. He is Uzziel 3rd from Vermont. His line is Uzziel
753> Uzziel 279> Amos 107> John 20> Nathaniel 5> John Putnam.
Uzziel Junior was from New Salem, Massachusetts and was number 753 in Eben's
books, then Eben got really confused and skipped a generation and mixed it all
up, so Uzziel 3rd and on down don't have Eben Putnam numbers.
Listing is 100001 010001. Now as
to this Uzziel, he was born January 19, 1792 in Wardsboro, Windham County
Vermont. He married Ann Chapman September 12, 1822 in Sandusky County Ohio.
Another account states it was Anna Gordon and they were married November 11,
1823. He may well have had two wives named Ann, very common name those days.
His folks had come from Jefferson County New York to Huron County Ohio and he
joined them there, and moved to Cass County here in Michigan about 1825. He was
the first white settler in the County.
Listed in 1831
O. D. PUTNAM Michigan Territory
No
ideas at all here, possibly a dual listing for Orlean.
ORLEAN PUTNAM Cass County
This
is Orlan or Orlean Putnam, son of Uzziel Putnam Jr. He was born May 7, 1808 in
Adams, Jefferson County New York. He will marry Amelia Vanderhoof here on April
15, 1834. He will be here until he dies in 1888.
Listed in 1834

He
and Polly are still here, and he’s still listed as Ivy H.
AUIR PUTNAM Dexter, Washtenaw County
This
is Arent or Aaron Putman and Alida Wilson from New York. See earlier listing.
UZZIEL PUTNAM Michigan Territory
This
would be Uzziel 3rd in Cass County.
UZZIEL PUTNAM Pokagon Township, Cass County
He is
Uzziel 3rd, a dual listing of the above.
SILAS PUTNAM Hillsdale County
He is
the son of Robert Putnam (1672) and Susannah Horton of Chester, Windsor County
Vermont. He was born there June 8, 1799. He married Martha Jordan of Chester
October 1, 1823. They will be in Lenawee County in 1840, and Martha will be
widowed there in 1850.
Listed in 1835
B. F. PUTNAM Michigan Territory
He is
Benjamin Franklin Putnam, son of Uzziel Jr. and brother to the Uzziel who is
also here in Cass County. He's from Oneida County New York. His wife is Alma Altha
Johnson, they were married here March 19, 1835.
HIRAM PUTNAM Michigan Territory
See
earlier info on this guy.

50s, Bridgit Nevins his wife is in her 40s. They will be here in 1850. His son

The
listing is 00001 00011. He is a

a little bit as their first son John was born there in 1841.

well.
ORLEAN PUTNAM La Grange, Cass County
Uzziel's
son, Orlan or Orlean. The listing is 000001 21001. He is in his 30s, Amelia (Vanderhoof) is in her 20s.

a son of Uzziel Putnam Jr. and a brother of Uzziel who is here in the county
now. The current listing is 00000011
00000001. Both he and his wife Wealthy are in their 50s now. They will
show up in 1850, but only he will be here in 1860 at age 71 VT living with a
Woods family that must be kin of sorts.
UZZIEL PUTNAM Pokagon Township, Cass County
Dad
who has been here a while now. He is actually Uzziel 3rd, as his Dad
Uzziel died back in Ohio. Current listing is 0010201 010101. He is in his 40s, his wife in her 30s. His wife is
Ann Gordon.
WILLIAM PUTNAM Ovid, Clinton County

are both in their 20s now. He was born in Ovid, Seneca County New York and came
here a few years ago. As he was the first settler, he named the town for his
old hometown. His father was John Jacob Putman and Leanah Weaver, listed there
in 1820. Dutch line from New York and then New Jersey.
DANIEL PUTNAM Fayette Township, Hillsdale County
He is
Daniel Baldwin Putnam. He is another son of Uzziel Putnam of Wardsboro,
Vermont. The listing is 10001001
1121. This shows him as in his 40s and indicates he was widowed. His
first wife Mary Louise Ensign had died April 5, 1840. But he will marry Sarah
Curren and she will be listed in 1850. Daniel has just come up from Huron
County Ohio where Uzziel his dad had died a while back. He will be here in 1850
and then hike out to Iowa with his son Nahum Dan and be there the rest of his

He is
listed as 000001 20001, with he in
his 30s and Sarah Lowe in her 20s. They will be in Jackson County in 1850.
Then, I feel the next Joseph in Jackson County is the same guy. The ages and
kids tie in the same. They may be different, but at least one of them is in
Jackson County in 1850. He is number 1193 or 1193A, a son of Bailey Putnam (470)
and Anna Bailey and was born in Charlestown, Sullivan County New Hampshire on
August 14, 1808. The family moved to Vermont and then New York. His line is

ALPHEUS PUTMAN Napoleon, Jackson County
Here
for a while with his wife. He is from New Hampshire, see 1820. The listing here
is 0010001 001001. He is in his
40s, Seropta (Dudley) in her 30s. They will be in Kent County in 1850. The two
kids shown here probably belong to his brother Jeremy who just died here. See
the listings in Jackson County in 1850.
HIRAM PUTNAM East Portage, Jackson County
He's
number 1191, and has been here a while. He is listed 0001011 20101. He is in his 40s and his wife

Dutch line. David Putman went to New Jersey and that branch was there through
the Revolution.
SILAS PUTMAN Madison, Lenawee County
Listing
is 0021001 221001. He was the one
in Hillsdale County in 1830. Look back at that listing for who he is. He will die
in the 1840s, and Martha will be here widowed in 1850.
A. PUTNAM Springfield, Oakland County
Maybe
Aaron's son? The listing is 0010001 0001000001. He is in his 40s and seems to
be widowed with a woman in her 70s living with him. She is probably his mother.
W. (WILLIAM HENRY) PUTNAM Groveland, Oakland County
William
H. Putnam is from New York and will be here in 1850. He is in his 30s, Mary
Sawyer in her 20s. The listing is 100001
10001. He is number 2450, a son of Caleb Putnam number 1085. He was born
in Rome, Oneida County New York. His line goes William > Caleb > Caleb
> Peter > Caleb > John > John > John.
PETER F. (FRANCIS) PUTMAN Constantine, St. Joseph County
Peter
Francis is from Montgomery County New York. His wife is Maria Becker. They are part
of the Dutch family. He is a son of Franz 'Francis' Putman and Maria Fonda and

his wife are in their 20s. They will be in Ingham County in 1850. He is from

G. W. PUTNAM Salem, Washtenaw County
He is
listed 01011 11001, with both he
and his wife in their 20s. He is not here in 1850 so I can't venture a guess,
except that his name is probably George Washington Putnam. He is possibly
Alpheus’ son.
J. W. (JOHN WILSON) PUTMAN Ypsilanti, Washtenaw County
He is
John Wilson Putman, son of Aaron and Alida Putman. He is married to Sally Ann
Jones. The listing is 0101413
210104. Ah ha! Much more
than just one family bunched up here. The older guys are in their 40s and the
older gals in their 30s and plenty of kids to go all around. He'll next be in
Shiawassee County and has been here since the mid 1830s. He and his brother
Simeon were in Genesee County New York in 1830. Dutch folks. God knows who else
is with them, and they are not together in 1850 so I have no clues.
GEORGE PUTNAM (ROTNOUR) Canton,
Wayne County
He is
listed 20000020001 0021101. He is really
a Rotnour and not a Putnam. He and lots of other Rotnours will be here in 1850.
Only leaving him in as he was indexed as a Putnam. He is probably one of the
two guys in his 40s as is the eldest female. Then there is another guy,
probably a brother, in his 40s and another older guy in his 80s who must be
daddy, Michael Rotnour who was here in 1830.
NORMAN PUTNAM Nankon, Wayne County
He is
listed 000001 000001. He and
Hannah are both in their 30s. He is a son of Peter Putnam (1080) and Susannah
Osgood. His dad Peter was born in Danvers, Mass. January 15, 1758, a son of
Peter Putnam (421) and Lydia Endicott. The family was from Massachusetts then
Vermont then New York. Norman was born in Bethany October 1, 1803 and then the
family was in Genesee County New York after that. They were in Wyoming County
New York in 1830 and are back there by 1850. Didn’t like it out here I guess.
Then his wife Hannah died and by 1860 he is by himself in St. Croix County
Wisconsin. He is a saddle maker.
MICHIGAN 1850 CENSUS
Finally
in 1850, we get all the names, ages, and states these folks were born in.
Again, I am listing by county and town to make it easier to see if people
connect.

married Julia Ann Stearn, Ellen married a Chatfield, and Alice was just Alice.

William 14 NY. Corney will be dying soon on January 5, 1851, and I don't know
where Bridget and their son went after that. Gave his line back in 1840. Now as
to William. Probably too young to be Corney’s, but if you look back in the 1840
you’ll see several females in their teens and down, and William listed as under
5. They might belong to Corney, or to one of his sons. Just don’t know.

he will marry Mary Ann somebody. They will move to Vermilion County Illinois

in 1839 or 1840 and were here for the 1840 census. They will be in Shiawassee
County in 1860 on. Bill will die there in 1881. Dutch lineage.
PARKS PUTNAM Grand Blanc Township, Genesee County
He is
listed as 41 NY. His wife Lucretia

B. is listed as 60 VT. His wife,
Sarah M. Curren, is 57 NH. The
children at home are: Phebe W. 23 OH, Dan 18 OH, and Wealthy 14 OH. He will be
off to Iowa soon with his son Nahum Dan, listed here just as Dan. Uzziel's son.
EPHRAIM T. PUTNAM Cambria Township, Hillsdale County
He is
a son of the above Daniel. He is listed as 32 OH. His wife, Merceline Chapman,
is 25 OH. Their daughter, Mary, is
4 MI. He was born December 1, 1817 while the family was in Oxford, Huron County
Ohio. His wife Merceline will die shortly on September 23, 1850. He will marry
Elsa Josephine Mulliken here on May 18, 1851.
FIDELIA & CHESTER
PUTNAM Jefferson Township,
Hillsdale County
Fidelia
is 18 NY and her brother Chester is 16 NY. They live with Robert (47 NY) and
Philina (46 NY) McNeil. She is Philina Mason, the widow of Ebenezer Putnam who
has died. They were from Alleghany County New York and were there in 1830. The
son Chester will be here in Michigan for a while, in Wisconsin in 1870, and
will be in Wood County Oklahoma by 1900. Ebenezer was a son of Anthony Putnam
number 1196 originally from Bethel, Vermont.
RICHARD PUTNAM Le Roy Township, Ingham County
Richard
Henry Putman is listed as 54 NY.
His wife, Nancy Schall, is 54 NY.
The children at home are: William 19 NY, David 17 NY, Daniel 17 NY,
Gilbert 14 NY, and Harriet 8 NY. He's a farmer. He is a son of Gilbert Putman
and Catherine Schall. He was born in Herkimer County New York in 1795. He
married Nancy Schall in Caughnawaga, Montgomery County New York on March 2,
1820. Richard will die here August 4, 1856 and Nancy will die here March 6,
1859. They kids will be on their own in 1860, but will all be around town. They
are Dutch. His line is Richard > Gilbert > Derrick (Richard) >
Lodowyck (Lewis) > Arent J. > Jan.
GERTRUDE PUTNAM Ingham, Ingham County
Gertrude
is listed as 12 MI and boarding. Looks like a dual listing for the daughter of
Joseph Putnam and Sarah Lowe. They were here in Ingham County in 1840, and are
currently in Jackson County. Gertrude is listed there as well, if this is the
same gal. Looks to be.
BENJAMIN PUTNAM Wheatfield Township, Ingham County
Benjamin
is listed as 40 MA. His wife,
Olive Price, is 30 NY. The
children are: Nancy 10 MI, Lucinda 8 MI, Sarah 6 MI, and Mary 4 MI. He is a son
of Abner Putnam and Nancy Stearns of Hamden County Massachusetts. See his
listing in 1860 for the whole line. I found a death certificate for their
daughter Nancy Ann. She was here August 17, 1839 and died in Butler, Branch
County January 4, 1920 at age 80. She had married Peter Bergin, but was widowed
when she died.
HIRAM PUTNAM Stockbridge, Ingham County
He's been
here forever. Hiram, number 1191, is listed as 52 NH. His wife, Laura Emeline Rice, is 38 NY. The children at home are: Laura 12 MI,
Melvina A. 10 MI, Hiram A. 7 MI, Anna A. 5 MI, Mary E. 3 MI, and Jonathan J. 1
MI. This family will be one in Washtenaw County in 1860, but the names are a
bit screwed up then. At any rate, he was born in Charlestown, Sullivan County
New Hampshire. He is a son of Bailey Putnam (470) and Anna Bailey.
ALBERT F. (T.) PUTNAM Henrietta, Jackson County
Albert
is listed as 27 MA (NY in 1860, MA in 1870). He will marry Sarah Chapman here
on June 20, 1852 and they will be here in 1860 and 1870, and longer.
Handwriting was tricky on these old reports. Rand and I think the middle
initial is a T, and that this guy is Timothy Albert Putnam a son of Charles
Putnam (1506) born in Worcester, Mass. His dad died in 1840, and Albert and his
Andrew brother headed west. Andrew is in Nevada now.
EDWIN PUTNAM Spring Arbor, Jackson County
Edwin
is listed as 12 NY with Edwin Hathaway 30 NY. His sister is listed next
boarding or staying with a Bean family. He will marry Juliette Lawrence in
1878, and then be in Whiteside County Illinois in 1880, then to South Dakota
and then will be in Stockton, Cedar County Missouri for the 1900 census. A Michigan
County history states he was a son of Jerome Putnam from New York State. That
Jerome was married to Martha Skinner and was in Batavia, New York. Jerome was
part of the ‘other’ New England family out of Hartford, Connecticut. But…. If
you look up Jeremy Putnam (number 1174) in Eben’s book, you’ll see he went from
VT to NY then to MI where he died. No name for the wife, but he had kids named
Edwin, Eliza, Elizabeth, Spencer and some other ones and they lived in Jackson
County according to the book. So… I think the Jerome mentioned in the history
was really Jeremy, the kids Edwin (number 2632), Eliza (# 2627), Elizabeth
(2628) and Spencer (2630) are all right here. The Sarah Lane Putnam mentioned
in the next listing should be their mother and Jeremy’s widow. Just a guess,
but it all fits. Jeremy’s line goes back through Samuel > Timothy etc and he
was a brother of Alpheus who was in Jackson County in 1840. Alpheus had a
couple of ‘spare’ kids then that were NOT his. Probably Jeremy’s. As no names
were used in 1840, the other kids and the mom Sarah were probably living with
other families. Eliza (2627) will marry Peter Deering November 28, 1853 here in
Jackson County and Elizabeth (2628) will marry John W. Ward in Calhoun County
on September 4, 1853.
ELIZABETH (ELIZA) PUTNAM Spring Arbor, Jackson County
Eliza
is listed as 15 NY. She is listed with St. Clair and Rebecca Bean from New
Hampshire and their family and two other kids. In 1860, Eliza will be married
to Peter Dearing, and a Sarah Putnam then 48 NY and her mom will be there.
Sarah and Eliza will be here in Jackson County in 1870. This would be Jeremy’s
family. I finally get confirmation. There is a death certificate of Elizah
Putnam Deering daughter of Jeremy Putnam and Sarah Lane. She was born May 17,
1834 and died in Washtenaw County February 3, 1902. Perfect!
SPENCER PUTNAM Concord, Jackson County

Sarah Putnam. He was listed here in Jackson County in 1840 with his uncle
Alpheus, as were two of his sisters.

is listed as 46 NJ, a farmer. His
wife, Emily Johnson, is 42 NY. The
children are: Eli 21 NY, William 16 MI, Jane 14 MI, Merritt 11 MI, and Thompson
2 MI. He is a son of Henry Putman and Sarah Dunn. They were in Sussex County
New Jersey from the mid 1700s through the early 1800s. The family then returned
to New York. Several members of that family will be here in Michigan. He and
his kids will be here through 1880, kids longer.

Joseph
is listed as 41 NY (actually it's NH).
His wife, Sarah Lowe, is 31 NY.
The children are: Gertrude 11 MI, Catherine 10 MI, and Charley 8 MI.
They were in Ingham County in 1840. He is Joseph Bailey Putnam, a son of Bailey
Putnam. He was born August 14, 1808 in Charlestown, Sullivan County New
Hampshire. He married Sarah Lowe. His line is Joseph > Bailey > Timothy
> Seth > Thomas > Thomas > John. His brother Hiram is now in Ingham
County.
JAMES PUTNAM Kalamazoo Village, Kalamazoo County
James
is listed as 21 NY. Best guess is that he is a son of Robert Putnam of Brutus,
Cayuga County New York. That James was born May 1, 1828, so age is perfect.
SIMEON PUTMAN Bowne Township, Kent County
The
son of Arent Derrick Putman (Dutch). Simeon is listed as 56 NY, a
blacksmith. His wife, Maria
Hannah, is 27 NY. The children are: Hannah 8 NY, John 5 NY, and Lovina 1 MI.
Maria is his second wife, they were married in 1840. Simeon was born in
Caughnawaga, Montgomery County on August 4, 1794. He married a Hannah in 1817
and she died in 1839. They were in Bethany, Genesee County New York in 1830. He
is a son of Arent Derrick Putman and Alida Wilson. Dutch. His line is Simeon
> Arent D. > Derrick > Lodowyck > Arent > Jan.

L. D.
is listed as 24 NY. In 1860 he is listed as Lemuel and has a family going. He
is a son of Alfred Putnam (#1726) and Sophia Dickerman. He was born in Herkimer,
Herkimer County New York August 31, 1823. His brother Alfred will be here soon.
He operates a drug store Shepherd & Putnam here in town.

Thomas > John). He has been here since the very beginning. They only had the one daughter. They were in
Jackson County up until now.

Benjamin
is listed as 29 NY. His wife
Minerva Oliphant, is 26 CDN. Their
daughter, Gertrude, is 3 MI. Minerva is widowed or at least alone in Jackson
County Michigan in 1860 and 1870.

Jordan is listed as 48 VT. The
children at home are: Silas 24 VT, Josiah 22 VT, Mary 18 MI, Henrietta 16 MI,
Susannah 13 MI, Joanna 11 MI, and Oscar 8 MI. She is Martha Jordan, the widow
of Silas Putnam, and was here in 1840. They were married in Chester Vermont
October 1, 1823, and came here to Michigan around 1831, and were listed here in
1835.

listed as 17 MI. He will be here single in 1860 and married in 1870. He will
then move to Indiana, where he will die in 1894. No clue to his folks though.
CHARLES & JANE PUTMAN Novi Township, Oakland County
Charles
is listed as 7 MI, Jane as 5 MI. They live with Edward and Hannah Hazen. They
are kids of George Putnam and Melinda Hosmer. Hannah Hazen is George’s sister.
Their father just died here September 4, 1845. Melinda has remarried. George
was a son of Reuben Putnam and Hulda Cummings from Lebanon, New Hampshire and
Stafford, Connecticut before that. Reuben was a son of Cornelius Putnam (number
339) and Elizabeth Perkins of Stafford.
WILLIAM H. (HENRY) PUTNAM Groveland Township, Oakland County
William
is listed as 42 NY. His wife, Mary
Jane Sawyer, is 38 NY. The
children are: Julia A. 17 MI, William 10 MI, Edward 7 MI, Alonzo 1 MI. He is a
son of Caleb and Elizabeth Putnam and is from Rome, New York. I gave this line
back in 1840. They had a son Lewis C. who died October 15, 1848 and a son
Valentine who died 1855.
ERI C. (CARLTON) PUTNAM Spring Lake Township, Ottawa County
Eri
Carlton, Sr., is listed as 38 NY, a millwright. His wife, Martha Close is 29 NY. The children are: Maria L. 9 MI, Ruby C. 4 MI, and Eri C. 5
months MI. There are three
boarders in the household. Eri was born January 12, 1812 in Watertown,
Jefferson (was Oneida) County New York. He married Martha May 22, 1843. You’ll
notice Maria was born in 1840, so there was a first wife that I have no info
on. Martha will die in a few years, and Eri will go to Kent County. He married
Eliza Goodrich in Grand Rapids, Kent County on December 3, 1857. They are there
in the 1860. He will then head off to Iowa in about 1866, bop up to Nebraska
about 1871 and return to Soldier, Monona County Iowa where he will die August
26, 1896. He is a son of John Putnam (1741) and Elizabeth Carlton of Fitchburg,
Massachusetts. His folks moved to New York in the early 1800s, and were in
Washington County and in Oneida County shortly afterwards.

11, 1848. They are here through the 1900.
HENRY PUTNAM Constantine Township, St. Joseph County

age is confusing with Matthias being 22 also.

from Montgomery and Albany Counties, New York. His wife Maria Becker has died.

Uzziel
is listed as 28 MI. He is Uzziel 4th, possibly on a football
scholarship at the University, but actually is just learning law. He was the
first white child born in Cass County (1822). He will graduate with honors from
the University of Michigan (here) in 1853, will work with a law firm in Detroit
and be admitted to the bar in 1855. He'll then scrap that, go back to farming
like his dad and then go into state government in the mid 1860s and become a
state senator in 1870 and then go to appointed office until his death in 1879.
ALBERT PUTMAN Nankin Township, Wayne County
Albert
is listed as 56 (no state shown, probably NY). He is listed in the Wayne County
Poor House. He is, or should be, the brother of Henry Putman who was a son of
Johannes Putman and Gertrude Six from New York and then up into the Niagara
area of Ontario Canada.
HENRY PUTMAN Nankin Township, Wayne County
Henry

Melinda or Belinda Doolittle, is 32 CDN.

Francis 2 MI, and Elizabeth 1 MI. He is a part of the New York Dutch Putmans
that settled early on in the Niagara District of Ontario. He would be probably be
a son of Henry Putman and Hannah Anguish. The Albert, Henry’s brother, listed
above could well be his father. He will die here shortly on February 23, 1852
and be buried in the Old Wayne Cemetery. Based on his (James) death
certificate, the son James was born August 31, 1835 (probably 1840) and will
die in Grand Rapids July 8, 1910.
MARY J. PUTMAN Nankin Township, Wayne County
Mary
Jane is listed as 11 CDN. Probably the same gal listed just above.
HANNAH PUTMAN Taylor Township, Wayne County

who died here. Lewis is Dutch, a son of Richard (Derrick) Putman and Nelly Van
Brocklin of Montgomery and then Fulton County New York. They were in Madison
County NY in 1830 and out here in the mid 1830s, but didn’t show up in the 1840
census index. According to Warren’s records, Lewis doesn’t die until June 14,
1852, so he may be around somewhere.
ANN PUTNAM Detroit City, Wayne County
Ann
is listed as 40 IRE.
HENRY PUTNAM Detroit City, Wayne County
Henry
is listed as 40 NY and works in a livery stable. His wife, Sarah Sanderson, is 40 NY and also possibly
NH. The children are: Jane 13 OH,
Ellen 11 OH, Sarah 9 OH, Ann 7 MI, George 5 MI, and Henry 3 MI. Then they list
William H. 6 OH, Louisa 4 OH and George 2 MI. These last three are their own
children, the others perhaps kids of a brother. I have no idea, but they are
listed out of sequence. Henry was in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County Ohio in 1840,
and seems to have had two brothers living with him at the time. He is a son of
Charles Putnam (986) and Sarah Shaw, and a grandson of Charles Putnam and
Martha Rose from Preston, Connecticut and then Augusta, Oneida County New York.
He will be in Oakland County Michigan in 1860 back here in 1870 and back in
Oakland with his son George in 1880.
JOHN PUTMAN Detroit City, Wayne County
He is
26 GER, Susan 25 GER, Mary 2 GER and Susan 1 GER. Obviously very recent
arrivals. Although, many times the recorder will just ditto the dad's
birthplace, so the kids may well have been born here. This could also be a
‘misread.’ They may have meant to write VER for Vermont.
MICHIGAN
1860 CENSUS

They
were here in Shiawassee County in 1850. He is now a hotel keeper age 53 NY,

Wilson of Montgomery County New York. A Dutch family.
MARY PUTNAM Niles, Berrien County

is 30 NY and a domestic with a Davis family. Her folks might be the Perley and
Margaret here in town, but she was not listed with them in 1850.

TUNIS PUTMAN Bronson, Branch County
He is
34 NY, Emeline 22 NY, Julia 9 MI, Ellen 4 MI and Philetus 2 MI. Also there are
a Shaw couple from NY. He would be Dutch. He is probably Teunis Putman Junior
from Amsterdam, Montgomery County New York.
L. (LYMAN) S. PUTMAN Butler, Branch County
He is
48 NH, Elizabeth 47 NH. They were here in 1850 as well. There is also a George
W. Milliken 33 NH and his son Milton 9 NY. Might be Elizabeth’s brother. He is
a son of Cornelius Putnam and Bridget Nevins, and was born in Hanover, New
Hampshire. The family went to Orleans County New York and Lyman came here in
the early 1840s. In 1850 there were sons John and Alvin who are missing here.

Batavia, Genesee County New York
HATTIE R. PUTNAM Union, Branch County
She
is 22 NH and boarding with Horace Corbin 32 NH, a merchant, and Melina Corbin
31 NH. They may be kinfolk of sorts. Hattie is probably a daughter of the
following Joseph and Harriet.
JOSEPH PUTMAN Union, Branch County
He is
55 NY, Harriet Curtis, his wife, 56 NY, George 21 NY and Myron 19 OH. In 1850,
they were in Bath, Summit County Ohio. He is a son of Cornelius Putnam and
Bridget Nevins and a grandson of Aaron Putnam and Sarah Colburn from Hanover,
Grafton County New Hampshire. See Stephen listed later in Calhoun County for
this line.
CYRUS PUTNAM Athens, Calhoun County
Cyrus
Andrew Putnam is from New York and was here in 1850, and is now back home with
his father Peter and that family. Cyrus is 32 NY, Clarissa 33 NY and Peter 10
MI.
PETER PUTNAM Athens, Calhoun County
He is
17 NY and living with a Lee family from New York. He is a son of Willard Putnam
(2862) and Mary Ann Jones from Rochester, New York. His dad died there in 1844
and his mother remarried by 1850. He first pops up here in the 1850s.
PETER S. PUTNAM Athens, Calhoun County
This
Peter was here in 1850 and is Peter Putnam jr. (number 2858) from Townsend,
Massachusetts. He is now 57 MA, Sally Daniels, his wife, 51 VT, Cyrus 32 NY and
his wife Clarissa Collins is 33 NY and their son Peter 10 MI are there as well.
Also there is a Peter Putnam 18 NY who is a laborer with them. This last Peter
is probably the same guy listed just above. He may not part of this Peter's
family (He wasn't listed in 1850) and may be kin of sorts from back east.
JAMES PUTNAM Athens, Calhoun County
He's
Peter's son from St. Johnsbury, Vermont and was here for the 1850. His brother Peter
lives next door. He is now 46 VT, Abigail Long 48 MA. Also here are their son
Newton 24 PA, his wife Mary Riley 22 PA and Olive 1 MI. His son Ransom lives
nearby in Leroy with his family.
LYMAN PUTNAM Battle Creek, Calhoun County
He is
39 NY, Helen Barker 26 NY and Eugene 10 OH. In 1850, he was in Summit County
Ohio and at the time his wife was Emily Barker who has died in 1854. He is
related to the George here in the county who was also in Summit County Ohio in
1850. He is probably also related to Joseph Putnam in Branch County. Anyway,
Lyman is a son of Franklin Putnam and Phoebe Burroughs, and was born in Genesee
County New York. He will die in the Civil War on June 24, 1863. Helen is
widowed in Ann Arbor, Washtenaw County in 1870.
MARIA PUTNAM Battle Creek, Calhoun County
She
is 19 MI and boarding with a family whose name I can't make out.
ALFRED PUTNAM Burlington, Calhoun County
He is
38 NY and has a son Charles 2 MI. They live with Parley Wood 63 NY. He and the
upcoming Arza (Ezra?) might be brothers. Looks like they both just got here.
ARZA (EZRA) PUTMAN Burlington Township, Calhoun County
The
name is most likely Ezra. He is 42 NY and a farmer, Jane 33 NY, twins Albert
and Adelbert 12 NY, Lucinda 10 NY, William 9 NY, Charles 8 NY, Emmett 5 NY,
Frank 3 MI and a baby girl 1/12 MI. I don't find this family in New York. A
descendant of the son Frank says the family was of Dutch origin.
BELA PUTNAM Clarendon, Calhoun County
He is
28 NY, Frances M. 25 NY, Mary E. 6 MI and Harriett 2 MI. He is a son of Stephen
Putnam and Lucy Francher. He was at home with his folks in 1850 in Genesee
County New York. His folks are here in Clarendon as well. Bela will be in Ionia
County Michigan in 1870, and in Turner County South Dakota in 1880.
JEROME PUTNAM Clarendon, Calhoun County
He is
16 NY and a laborer on a farm next to Stephen and Lucy Putnam who may be his
folks or at least kinfolk, I would guess. He was not listed with Stephen in
1850 back in Genesee County New York. By 1870 he will list Illinois as his
birthplace, and then by 1900 will start using his full name of Stephen Jerome
Putnam, born in Illinois. He’ll be here in Clarendon County all his life. He
might be connected to the Stephen Putnam who was in Summit County Ohio in the
1840. That Stephen disappeared, but his brothers Lyman and Joseph were there in
1850. Then they ended up in Michigan. Matt Putnam has a good idea. The
following Stephen had another son with him in 1830 and 1840. He doesn’t pop up
in 1850 nor do Jerome and Alonzo. He would be a grandson of Stephen and Lucy
though. He’ll be single here and by 1880 will be married and remain so through
the 1930 census.
STEPHEN PUTNAM Clarendon, Calhoun County
He
was in Genesee County New York in 1820 and 1830, in 1840 was in Chautaugua
County New York, then in 1850 was in Genesee County New York. He is a son of
Aaron Putnam and Sarah Colburn of Hanover, New Hampshire, and a brother of
Cornelius who has been here a while. There are a few extra families all living
around each other here. One or two are sons of Cornelius, another may be his,
and a couple are sons of the Joseph from Ohio. I can sort out all but a couple,
but they are all related and descend from Aaron and Sarah. Aaron's folks were
Cornelius Putnam and Elizabeth Perkins from Sutton, Massachusetts and then
Hanover, New Hampshire. Cornelius was number 339 in Eben's books and then Eben
could go no further. What I have is from the Mormon files. Stephen is indeed
one of Aaron's sons. Stephen is 66 NH, Lucy Fancher his wife is 64 NY. His son
Aaron 33 NY is with them and has a wife Catherine J. Cobb 27 NY and a son
Joseph E. (Eugene) 1 MI. Then there is an Alonzo Putnam 11 IL. Stephen is a
farmer, Aaron a chair maker. Check out these folks also here in the area.
William is a son of Cornelius, Lyman is a son of Franklin Putnam and was also
born back in Genesee County NY. He was in Summit County Ohio in 1850. A Jerome
lives next door to Stephen and may also be a son. George lives nearby and is a
son of Joseph and was with him in 1850. Ransom, who is James' son lives next to
George. This is all a bunch of related families and all connected to Aaron.
Wish I could find someone related to them to tell me how to sort them all out
properly. The son Aaron and his family will be in Clay County South Dakota in
the 1880 census, and he will die there in 1886.

GEORGE PUTNAM Leroy, Calhoun County
He is
26 OH, Elizabeth 22 OH and they have an unnamed daughter 3/12 MI. I guess he is
number 2869, and a brother of the Peter Putnam listed earlier in Athens,
Calhoun County. Rand Putnam dug up some interesting Cemetery Inscriptions in
Leroy. Elizabeth’s stone reads she was the wife of G. C. Putnam (his stone
reads he died in 1862), and the late wife of P. S. Putnam, and that she died in
1899. Now, look ahead to the listing here in Leroy for Peter Putnam in the
1870. Looks like he married Elizabeth after George died. The young daughter
listed here is named Emma then. This Peter is the one listed presently in
Athens. He is NOT a son of Peter junior, but more likely a nephew.
RANSOM PUTNAM Leroy, Calhoun County

would be about 17 now. I think Barnet is a son of Victor Johannes Putman and
Maria Schall from Montgomery County. He is a part of the New York Dutch family.
Found a death certificate in Washtenaw County for the daughter Mary E. She was

in 1850.
CHARLES PUTNAM Fulton, Gratiot County

18 MI and a laborer living with a Morse family. He may be the one in Oakland
County in 1850 who was living with another family then as well. He'll be
married here in 1880.

but the ages are off a bit from now and from what they should be then, gets
okay in 1880 when they are still here. He is in the pharmaceutical business.
Anyway, he looks like the single guy in Wyoming County NY in the 1850, so no
clue as to his folks.

there a while. Don't have John's birth date, but it was later. Abner is number

This line goes Benjamin > Abner > Elisha > Elisha > Elisha >

FRANCES PUTMAN Leoni Township, Jackson County

would probably be the wife/widow of William Putman, a son of John and Emily
here. She lives next door to William's brother Eli and near his folks. William

1850. He was born in Herkimer, NY, a son of Alfred Putnam (1726) from
Brattleboro, Vermont. He married Caroline Willard Williams on October 18, 1852.
The IGI states it was in Deerfield, Mass. where she was from, but I would guess
it was actually out here in Grand Rapids.

Eri and Eliza.

Dawson listed shortly in Almont.
DAVID PUTNAM Attica Township, Lapeer County
He is

William 6 CAN, Maria 5 MI. Also there are Jonathan Putnam 23 CAN and his wife
Sarah J. Brower 19 NY. I assume Jonathan is by a prior 'mother' as Marilla is
just too young. A descendant says that John was indeed married to an Eliza
first. Jonathan and David above were born in the first marriage. Best guess is
that John is a son of David Putman and Dorothy Hainer from Ontario and then New
York State before that. Dutch family.

J. 16 MI, Andrew 14 MI, George 12 MI, Frank 4 MI and Fanny 2 MI. Looks like a

here in Milan, Michigan January 27, 1904.
NATHAN PUTNAM Milan Township, Monroe County
He is
listed as 28 MI, a tanner and living by himself. There just weren’t any other
Nathans around, so this has to be a dual listing for John’s son and the age is 18
not 28. He’ll be married here by 1870.
JOHN PUTNAM Whiteford, Monroe County
He is
27 NY a farmer, Angelette 19 NY and Cora A. 3/12 MI. He is Parks Putnam and

workers listed including a Hosea Putnam 29 VT who is his brother. In 1850 the
only child listed was Eleanor who would be 32 now, so I do not know how the
above Elizabeth fits in. I understand Elizabeth is a daughter born in 1847, but
she didn’t appear with the family in 1850. At any rate, Laban is a son of
Reuben and Eleanor Putnam of Bethel, Vermont. Laban is number 2673 in Eben's
book. They were in Palatine, Cook County Illinois in 1850 and will return
shortly and just the two of them will be in 1870.

and Elwood 11 OH. They were in Williams County Ohio in 1850. They will be in
Allegan County by 1870 and in Berrien County in 1880. I believe he is a son of
Archelaus Putnam (1903) and Martha Hawkins of Windsor County Vermont and the
Allegheny County New York. Charles was born March 24, 1810 and Lucinia was born
