MISSOURI
CENSUS RETURNS
1820 - 1900
UPDATED OCTOBER 18, 2008
Missouri became a part of the United States in 1803 with the Louisiana Purchase. In 1805 it was part of the Louisiana Territory and in 1812 became a separate Territory, and in 1821 Missouri became the 24th State.
The first Federal Census taken for the State was the 1830 Census. In the 1830 and 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10-14, 15- 19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.
From 1850 on ages and states of birth are shown. In 1880 places of birth are listed for the person, their father and their mother. In the 1880 Soundex only families with children under 10 are listed. In the 1900 and later Soundex, all families are listed.
MISSOURI 1820
CENSUS
There were no Putman or Putnam listings I could find.
MISSOURI 1830
CENSUS
JOHN PUTMAN St. Louis County
In 1840 he is still in the county living in St. Ferdinand. I am not certain who he is. He may be John Putman out of Kentucky. His son, John H. Putman, appears in the 1880 census of Oregon. The listing is 001011 00001. He is in his 30s and she in her 20s. There is another male in his 20s who must be a brother. Both these older guys are here in 1840.
MISSOURI 1840
CENSUS
JAMES PUTNAM Benton County
He is in Alexander township. Listing is 20001001 01101. Benton County is next to Rives County (soon to be Henry County) in the western part of the state. The following Benjamin is a son of Wilson Putman from North Carolina. This James is not a brother, but may well be from North Carolina as well. Bad news is he's gone by 1850, so I'll never be certain.
WILLIAM PUTMAN Linn County
The son of James Putman and Elizabeth Kendrick has come from Indiana with his wife Sarah Head and the family. They are listed 1301 00001. His father, James, is a son of Henry Putman from Culpeper County, Virginia. The family went to Bracken County, Kentucky then up into Monroe County, Indiana. William married Sarah there in Monroe County on April 5, 1831
B. (BENJAMIN)
PUTMAN Rives County
This is Benjamin Putman and his wife Mary (Polly) Buchanan. They are both in their 30s. The family is listed as 222101 010001. He is a son of Wilson Putman and Rebecca Morris from Tennessee. Wilson is from Rutherford County, North Carolina, a son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Putman.
JOHN PUTMAN St. Louis County
Listed in St. Ferdinand township still. Listing is 0000102 00101. He and perhaps a brother are in their 40s. His wife (?) is still in her 20s, so it may be number two for him, or maybe he is widowed and his brother has a wife now, or maybe this is typical sloppy census taking. They are not here in 1850, so I just have no idea.
ABSOLUM PUTMAN St. Louis County
He is probably a Putnam, and the name should be Absalem. He is also in St. Ferdinand Township as is the above John who is probably his father. The listing is 00001 1001. He is in his 20s, his wife in her late teens.
EDMOND PUTNAM St. Louis County
Living in the city of St. Louis. I believe he is from the Massachusetts family. The listing is 30011 00001, with both he and his wife in their 20s with three young sons.
MISSOURI 1850
CENSUS
MARY PUTNAM Cooper County
She is in Boonville. She is listed with Richard and Susan Jeffries from Virginia. They are her parents. Mary is 23 VA and her husband (see next listing), D. Putnam, is there as well.
D. (DARIUS ERASTUS)
PUTNAM Cooper County
He is with Mary and that gang listed above. He is also listed separately and shown as 22 MA. Darius married Mary Jeffries in Booneville on May 7, 1849. He is a son of Darius Putnam and Sally Putnam and was born in Sutton, Massachusetts March 25, 1828. They will be here in 1860. This Darius is number 2816 in Eben Putnam's books, his father is number 1255. The line back is this Darius E. > Darius > Asa > Edward > Edward > Edward > Thomas > John Putnam, the immigrant to Massachusetts.
HENRY PUTNAM Gasconade County
Henry is 53 and was born in South Carolina. He might be connected to the Henry Putman of Charleston and Savannah. I cannot find a connection to any of our Putmans, yet. The only other possibility is he is a son of the Daniel Putman from SC who went to Tennessee and then dropped out of sight by 1840.
JOHN PUTMAN Greene County
John and Mary Garrett arrived in the 1840s with a large family. In this report, he is 66 SC, Mary 52 SC, Sarah 30 TN, Nancy 26 TN, Mary 24 TN, Susan 22 TN, John G. 21 TN, Elizabeth 19 TN, Daniel C. 16 TN, Minerva 14 MO, William H. 12 MO, Joseph E. 5 MO. John is a son of Daniel and Sarah Putman of Abbeville District, South Carolina. His line goes back John > Daniel > Zachariah > Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas. Thomas Putnam Sr. was the immigrant from England who came to Virginia in 1647. Southern Branch.
MANSEL PUTMAN Greene County
John and Mary's son is 28 TN and just married Minerva James, 28 TN. No kids yet. Southern Branch.
RUBEN PUTMAN Greene County
Reuben R. Putman is John and Mary's eldest. He is 39 TN, his wife Mary (probably a Garrett) is 36 SC. Children are James F. 11 TN, John 9 TN, Thomas B. 5 AL (most likely MO) and Elisha B. 2 MO. Southern Branch.
BENJAMIN
PUTNAM Henry County
No he hasn't moved, the county changed names in 1841. He is 45 NC, Mary (Buchanan) is 44 TN. Children are Newton 24 TN, Emily 22 TN, Lafayette 18 TN, Israel 20 TN, Van Buren 13 TN, Sarah 6 MO, Ellen 4 MO, Jane 3 MO and William (William Wilson, actually) 1 MO. His line goes back Benjamin > Wilson > Benjamin > Thomas > Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas in Virginia. Southern Branch.
CALVIN PUTMAN Lawrence County
He is a son of William and Alla Putman up from Washington County, Arkansas. His folks are next door, probably helping him settle into his new home. He just married Martha Simms in 1846. He is a blacksmith 26 IN, she is 24 IN. There are no children yet. Southern Branch.
WILLIAM PUTMAN Lawrence County
He and his wife Alla Bridges are here very temporarily, just over the border from their regular home in West Fork, Washington County, Arkansas. Their family is also in the 1850 census of Washington County, Arkansas. They must have come up with Cal to his new farm and were home to be counted in Arkansas as well. The listing is William 60 VA (should read SC), a cooper, Alice (Alla Bridges) 55 VA (also SC), Solomon 22 IN, George 14 IL, Joseph 10 IL and Prudence 7 IL. William is a son of Daniel and Prudence Putman from Anderson County, South Carolina. The kids were born in Gibson County, Indiana and then they went to Fulton County, Illinois and then to West Fork, Washington County, Arkansas. His line goes back William > Daniel > Barnet > Thomas > Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas. Southern Branch.
WILLIAM PUTMAN Linn County
Bill is 37 KY, Sarah (Head) is 41 VA. Kids are Francis Marion 18 IN, Peter 16 IN, Jonathan 14 IN, Squire 12 IN, Mary 9 MO, Benjamin B. 5 MO and Jefferson 3 MO. Southern Branch. The son of James Putman and Elizabeth Kendrick.

William's brother is 34 KY, Melvina Baker his wife is 34. Children are Clinton 13 IN, Amanda 11 IN, Elizabeth 10 MO, Anna 9 MO, William 5 MO, Sarah 3 MO and James 1 MO. Southern Branch.
LAVINA J.
PUTMAN Polk County
She is 21 born in Tennessee living with a family headed by James and Martha Stockton. She is Lavina Jane Stockton who is the wife of Rufus Putman, the son of Benjamin Putman of Henry (Rives) County. They were married on October 25, 1849. Rufus has headed to the Gold Fields. The family will join him soon. They appear in the town of Rough And Ready, Nevada County, California in the 1870 Census. They will be out in California a while, digging for gold first and then farming. Southern Branch.
HENRY PUTTMAN St. Genevieve County
He is 40 years old and was born in Germany.
CHARLES PUTNAM St. Louis County
He is listed as 32 MA, a hackdriver in St. Louis. He is Charles Augustus Putnam born in Danvers, Massachusetts on September 20, 1823. He is Number 1533 in Eben Putnam's book. Look quick as he will marry Lydia Tapley here in 1853 and then turn around and die here on January 2, 1854. I suppose, after the wildest New Year's Eve party of his life. His line is Charles > Jesse > Joseph > David > Joseph > Thomas > John.
JOHANNES
PUTTMAN St. Louis County
He is shown as 40 and being born in Missouri. He is with his sister Fredricka 35. He is most likely related to the German Puttman family that was in Monroe County, Ohio in 1820. If he was indeed born in Missouri, then there were either two families around early, or I am wrong about the John Putman in the 1830 census, and that guy was German. Johannes or John is possibly related to the above Henry in St. Genevieve County, brothers likely.
MISSOURI 1860
CENSUS
P. (PHILIP)

SAMUEL H. PUTNAM Benton County
He is 31 TN and his wife Catherine is 17 MO. All of the Putnam/Putman folks in Tennessee in the 1820s were from the Southern family, but I can't tie him in anywhere, unless to Daniel who was in Tennessee and not much is known about him. He married Catherine E. Cook here on May 4, 1859. I don't find him after this census.
ELIZA PUTMAN Bollinger County
She is 64 from Prussia living with the Meyers Family also from Germany.
HENRY PUTNAM Carroll County
He is 39 from Canada living with the Soucks family also from Canada.
MARTHA J.
PUTNAM Cass County
She is 22 IN. She is living with Mark and Rachael McAfish. It appears that Rachel 23 IN is her sister. Also there are Marion Putnam 12 IN and Sophronia 9 IN her brother and sister. I don't find these folks in Indiana, Illinois or Iowa in 1850, so cannot help here.
JOHN PUTNAM Cass County
He is shown as 22 AR and is with a family of William and Ruth Fry. John is a son of John and Elizabeth Putnam from Crawford County, Arkansas. He and his son Joseph live in Watkins Township. The German family came into Maryland in the mid 1700s, moved to Frederick County and then up into Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Some remained there, most moved to Ohio. He will return to Van Wert County, Ohio because of the Civil War and will die there in 1864. Looking at Dad's kids, they made a brief stop over in Illinois.

PUTNAM Franklin County
She is 21 NY living with T. C. and Nancy Williams.
EBEN PUTNAM Gasconade County
He is 47 NY with a wife Elizabeth 47 MA. He is actually a Dutch Putman. He and his wife Elizabeth Townsend were in Tyrone, Steuben County, New York. They will return to Schuyler County, New York (that part was in Steuben County when they were last there) in 1868 and be there in the 1870 census. The line goes back Ebenezer > John > John > Victor > David > Jan Putman.

Another of John's brood. He is 43 TN, Polly is 44 SC, James 21 TN, John 18 TN, Thomas 14 MO, Elisha 12 MO, and William 4 MO. Southern Branch.
NANCY PUTMAN Lawrence County
She is listed as 40 years old and an 'inmate' living with Henry 40 and Sarah 25 Gill and their family. I am not certain who she is or whether she was born a Putman or born perhaps a Gill and married at one time to a Putman. There are no birthplaces recorded on the entire page this report was on. Now, Calvin, who was here in 1850 left his wife, Martha Sims, and went on the gold rush to California with his brother George. There is a slight, only slight, chance that this Nancy might be his deserted wife. Lawrence County is on the Arkansas border. Not sure at all.
BENJAMIN
PUTMAN Henry County
Ben is 54 NC, Mary Buchanan 53 TN and Emily 31, Virginia Ellen 15, Jane 13 and (William) Wilson 10 are still at home with their folks. Benjamin is a son of Wilson Putman and was born in Rutherford County, North Carolina on July 15, 1804. Mary is from Rhea County, Tennessee. Southern Branch.

HENRY PUTMAN Linn County
He is 30 born in Ohio and living with the family of Samuel Moore. There was a Henry Putman, age 18, in the 1850 census of Licking County, Ohio who was a son of a clergyman, E. M. Putnam. He is the only one I find that is close in age. If he is the same, then he is from New England or at least his ancestors were.
FRANCIS PUTNAM Marion County
He is 27 from Canada living with a DeWitt family.
JOHN PUTNAM Mercer County
He is 45 NY, Mary Meek 43 OH, Lucretia 19 NY, Samuel D. 13 OH, Silvy 9 OH, Veronica 8 OH and Mary E. 6 OH. He is a son of David and Mary Putnam from Huron County, Ohio. He had a son Jesse who would be 15, but seems to have died in the last ten years. He married Mary Meek back in Huron County, Ohio on April 25, 1844 and they were there in the 1850 census. Based on Lucretia’s age (also with them in 1850), John was married to someone before Mary. They will be in Decatur County, Iowa for the 1870 census. Dutch family from NY. David’s folks were George Putman and Mary Ferguson. Even though John is heading out, all the rest of his brothers will be here by the 1870 census and hang around forever.
GREEN PUTNAM Mercer County
He is in Morgan Township. He is 25 IL, Mary Kelsey 24 IN, Franklin 5 IA, Jane 3 IA and Tilford 1 MO. He is Green Marion Putman, son of Elijah Putman and Elizabeth Duff. Zachariah appeared in 1850 back in Tennessee living with his grandfather Amos, but that was because his dad James was in between wives who kept dying off on him. Sarah is wife number two. Sarah will die in a few years and he will marry Rebecca Elizabeth Gill in January 1870. James married Sarah Ann Morris in Williamson County, Tennessee on June 18, 1840. SILAS S.
PUTNAM St. Louis County
He is 26 NJ a clerk living alone. He wasn't in the 1850 New Jersey Census. The only folks in New Jersey in the 1830s were related to Miles Putnam from Vermont and Massachusetts before that. He must be related to Miles in some way.
FERDINAND PUTMAN St. Louis County
He is a wood turner, 40 from Hanover, Germany. Lucy 20 GER seems to be his second? wife. Children are Adolph 8 MO, Matilda 5 MO, Lavinia 2 MO and Ferdinand 4 months MO.
SARAH PUTNAM St. Louis County
Sarah Putman is 48 MA and her son Charles 24 MA. She is Sarah Gilson, ex-wife of Charles Putnam (2384) of Lowell, Mass. They were married about 6 years and then separated (no divorce). She moved with Charles to her folks in Pennsylvania. I have no clue why they moved out here though. The young guy is Charles Orrin Putnam born in Lowell, Mass. November 8, 1835. He will be marrying Susan Saul here in 1861 and will be around forever. Sarah will still be here in 1880 at age 69.

Jeremiah was born in Virginia, then moved with his folks Jeremiah Putnam and
his first wife to Guilford County, North Carolina in the 1830s. I have never
been able to tie down this family. They were Quakers early on, and not a part
of my Southern family near as I can figure. They just popped up on the Virginia
Coast. Think they just may be ‘late arrivals’ from England. At any rate, they
will be here a while. Jeremiah’s two older kids, Martin and Christopher are
living along side him with other kinfolk.
