NEW JERSEY
CENSUS REPORTS
1830 - 1930
UPDATED NOVEMBER 30, 2008
I'm not certain exactly what happened, but the 1790, 1800, 1810, and 1820 Federal Census stuff for New Jersey just up and disappeared. The first news we get from the Jersey Shore begins with the 1830 census.
In the 1830 and 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.
From 1850 on ages and states of birth are shown. Starting in 1880 places of birth are listed for the person, their father and their mother. In the 1900 and 1920 Soundex, all families are listed. I was able to get the indexes for 1910 and 1930 so they are very complete, listing occupations and length of time married.

ALONZO
PUTNAM Jersey City, Hudson County
He
is 19 West Indies born Jul 1881, and is listed as a stepson of Frederick (50
Germany) and Addea (39 West Indies) Grunwald. He could somehow be connected to
Fernando Cortez Putnam. Fernando was married (his second) to Addah Husband who
would be 72 now and is living with her son William in the State of Washington.
But this is strange to have Alonzo’s mom named Addea. I really wonder if Addea
was a child of Fernando, though was never in the censuses, that remained in the
West Indies. Alonzo was born in the West Indies at a time when Fernando had
been here in the States for many years. Very interesting. Hmmm.

back to the 1880 in Jersey City, you will see an Edward Putnam born in
Connecticut. This just has to be his dad.

NJ Mar 1882, Charles H. 16 NJ Feb 1884, Frank 10 NJ Jan 1890 and Sadie Putnam
15 NJ Jan 1885 listed as a servant. He is Jeremiah's son and the age is 29 born
in Feb 1871. This is an example where they went back later and added the year of
birth. The initial listing had age and month, so if they read the age wrong,
they put in the wrong year. Happened all the time. Now if you look at 1910 and
1920, you’ll see the Charles and Frank listed here have the last name Brown and
would be Anna’s from an earlier marriage. Sadie is probably a sister or cousin
I guess. Then the Voorhus B. is???? Wonder if it is a ‘screw-up’ of William and
his middle name is Voohus or Voorhies.
