NEW
JERSEY
CENSUS
REPORTS
1830 -
1930
UPDATED
OCTOBER 24, 2011
I'm
not certain exactly what happened, but the 1790, 1800, 1810, and 1820 Federal
Census stuff for New Jersey just up and disappeared. The first news we get from
the Jersey Shore begins with the 1830 census.
In the
1830 and 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14, 15-19,
20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.
From
1850 on ages and states of birth are shown. Starting in 1880 places of birth
are listed for the person, their father and their mother. In the 1900 and 1920 Soundex, all families are listed. I was able to get the
indexes for 1910 and 1930 so they are very complete, listing occupations and
length of time married.

Husband who would be 72 now and is living with her son William in the State of
Washington. But this is strange to have Alonzo’s mom named Addea.
I really wonder if Addea was a child of Fernando,
though was never in the censuses, that remained in the West Indies. Alonzo was
born in the West Indies at a time when Fernando had been here in the States for
many years. Very interesting. Hmmm.

an example where they went back later and added the year of birth. The initial
listing had age and month, so if they read the age wrong, they put in the wrong
year. Happened all the time. Now if you look at 1910 and 1920, you’ll see the
Charles and Frank listed here have the last name Brown and would be Anna’s from
an earlier marriage. Sadie is probably a sister or cousin I guess. I guess
William’s middle name is Voohus or Vorris and their son is William junior.

Country Doctor: “The small village of Lyme, New
Hampshire, lies south west of the White Mountains; two miles further west the
Connecticut River divides New Hampshire from Vermont. Dartmouth Medical
School and the Mary Hitchcock Memorial Hospital are ten miles to the south, in
Hanover. In 1935 the town of Lyme, which had a population of about 900, had
been without a doctor for some time. Despite the great depression
residents voted at a town meeting to raise $500 for the support of a doctor for
the ensuing year. Bill Putnam was finishing an 18 month internship at the Mary
Hitchcock Memorial Hospital when the vacancy in Lyme came to his
attention. The position was ideal for his requirements; as a 9 year old
he had barely escaped death in the influenza epidemic of 1918 and, inspired by
his attending physician, had decided then to become a doctor in a small New
Hampshire town. And so it was that on 1 January 1936 William F Putnam,
M.D. hung out his shingle - or put up his plate - in Lyme, having made his
first house call the night before. "Doc Putnam" had begun his
career. He stayed in Lyme for 42 years, and his practice expanded to
include 24 communities in two states. He once calculated that his territory
encompassed more than 1000 square miles.”
