New Mexico was a Territory from 1850 until it became a state in 1912. A few, very few, of our folks wandered out here from Texas, Oklahoma and generally the southern states. Some to ranch, most to go mining for that elusive pot of gold (or silver in most cases).

There were no Putmans or Putnams listed.

 

 

NEW MEXICO 1870 TERR. CENSUS

 

OSCAR J. PUTNAM  Cubero Precinct, Valencia County

He is a farmer 23 MI and his very young wife Gabriella is 13 NM. There are no kids as Gabriella may not yet have reached puberty. He is a son of Silas and Martha Putnam from Lenawee County, Michigan. He was at home there in 1850 and 1860.

 

 

NEW MEXICO 1880 CENSUS

 

FRED H. PUTNAM  Silver City, Grant County

He is 22 MA MA MA, a miner boarding with a Joseph Reynolds. He is probably Frederick Huntington, son of Benjamin Wadsworth Putnam and Susan Symonds from West Roxbury, Mass. He was home there in 1860 and 1870.

He is 28 IL IL WI single and boarding. He is a well driller.

NORA PUTNAM  Old Albuquerque, Bernalillo County

She is 46 IA and widowed. She has Israel 24 AZ MA IA and Ralph 7 AZ MA IA with her. She was married to Charles Franklin Putnam from Massachusetts. They were in Gila County, Arizona in 1900. Israel is married here in 1920 and 1930. Nora and Ralph are here in 1920, and Ralph is in Los Angeles California by 1930.

 

CHARLES PUTMAN  Ponil, Colfax County

He is 26 PA KS KS and is single. He is boarding. He is a stationery engineer.

 

MARTHA A. PUTNAM  Clovis, Curry County

She is 50 IN and divorced. Her son Harry is 26 IN WI IN and single. She was divorced or at least single in 1900 in Valpariso, Porter County, Indiana in 1900. She and Harry are in Chicago by 1930. Based on the 1900 Indiana Census she had a daughter Zada. In 1920 Zada is living with the Henry and Henrietta who are also here in Curry County now and is listed as a married. daughter.

 

MAURICE PUTNAM  Clovis, Curry County

He is 33 AL AL AL and works in a boiler factory. His wife of 10 years Margaret is 34 AL. They have Vernie 9 AL and Fred 2 AL. He is Christopher Morris Putman, son of William Putman and Elizabeth Meyers from Jackson County, Alabama. He and his wife listed as Ellie M. were there in 1900 with his widowed mother.

 

HENRY R. PUTNAM  Texico, Curry County

He is 45 MI NY US, his wife Henrietta is 40 OH NY ENG. They live with her parents Henry (85 NY) and Mary A. (75 ENG) Cowden. He is a real estate agent. He looks like the son of Harrison and Christine Putnam from Winnebago County Wisconsin. I don’t find him in 1900, but they are in Wichita Falls, Texas in 1920 and 1930. Look up two entries and see Martha Putnam. It seems she was his wife in 1882 and 1900, though he was somewhere out of Indiana in 1900. They must have come out here and divorced, and Henry married Henrietta recently out here. Interesting.

 

WALTER PUTMAN  Artesia, Eddy County

He is 28 LA US US and his wife Eva is 29 LA. They have been married 1 year and Eva has two daughters last name Carter from her first marriage. He is a son of James H. Putnam and Pauline Johnson from Arcadia Parish, Louisiana. He was home there in 1900. His family goes back to Massachusetts.

 

ORLIN M. PUTNAM  Artesia, Eddy County

He is 37 KS MI IL. Anna Bergstrom, his wife of 6 months, is 25 IA. This is his second marriage. He is a son of Uzziel Franklin Putnam and Martha Jane Cannon. He was home in 1880 in Reno County, Kansas with his folks. In 1900, he was with the family in McDonough County, Illinois with his first wife Minnie Herring. I guess she died. Now in 1910 his kids are with Minnie’s folks. By 1920 he and Anna will be in Lane County, Oregon. They will be there the rest of their lives. They never had any children.

 

ROBERT PUTNAM  Silver City, Grant County

He is 40 KS KS KS. Lucy his wife of 9 years is 26 TX and they have Rodney or Charley 7 NM. He is all by himself here in 1920. No clue as to folks.

 

ELMER PUTMAN  Columbus, Luna County

He is 35 PA VA ??. Adly his wife of 10 years is 36 PA, and they have Vera 8 PA, George 4 ID and John 3 ID. He is a son of Eugene and Mary Putnam and in 1880 was at home in Clearfield County, Pennsylvania. In 1900 his folks were in Potter County, Penn. But I don’t find him then. Adley and Vera are on a ranch in 1920 in Otero County. No sign of Elmer or the sons though.

 

JOE M. PUTMAN  Tucumcari, Quay County

He is 39 AR GA TN. Mamina Sanford, his wife of 13 years, is 32 AR. They have James S. 11 TX. He is a son of John Augustus Putman and Elizabeth Brown from Franklin County, Arkansas. He was with the family in Parker County, Texas in 1880 and married there in 1900. They are here in 1920.

ISRAEL O. (OSGOOD) PUTNAM  Albuquerque, Bernalillo County

He is 34 AZ, Clara 31 NM. His mother Nora is listed next. They are here in 1930.

 

NORA PUTNAM  Albuquerque, Bernalillo County

She is 56 IA, her son Ralph 17 AZ. She is the widow of Charles Franklin Putnam from Massachusetts. Charles was born in Groton, Mass, a son of Osgood Putnam (2122) and Rhoda Ann Hall. Charles left home in the late 1850s, and was in Lavensworth, Minnesota in 1860. He joined the Union Army in Minnesota in 1861, and then moved to Arizona in the early 1880s. Charles and Nora were there in 1900, and she was widowed here in 1910. She is still here in 1930 and Ralph is married and in Los Angeles County Californai in 1930..

 

JOHN S. (SIDNEY) PUTNAM  Fort Sumner, De Baca County

He is 29 CO, Lina L. 27 TX. He is John Sidney Putnam, the son of Frank Shephardson Putnam and Laura Alma Peacock.  He was in Lyon County, Kansas, in 1900 and 1910. New England family that went to Warren County, Penn and then out here. They are here in 1930.

 

MAGNUS L. (LAWRENCE) PUTNAM  Fort Bayard, Grant County

He is 18 MO and a soldier at the U. S. Hospital here. According to a tombstone, he married Josephine Bell who died here in New Mexico in 1937. He looks to be a son of Edward and Mattie Putnam from Polk County, Missouri.

 

ROBERT G. PUTMAN  Haihita, Grant County

He is 49 KS and living alone. He was married here in Grant County in 1910. He is in Luna County in 1930 and admits he was divorced.

 

ALBERT E. PUTMAN  Denning, Luna County

He is 23 CA and a Railroad worker. He is probably the son of James Putnam of Tulare County, California as shown in the 1900 CA census.

 

ADLY PUTNAM  Alamogordo, Otero County

She is 46 PA, her married daughter Vera Crosby is 18 PA. There are also some boarders here on the ranch. She was married to Elmer Putman in Luna County in 1910. No idea where he or their sons are now.

 

JOSEPH M. PUTMAN  Tucunncari, Quay County

He is 49 AR, Nannie A. Sanford 42 AR and James S. 21 TX. He is a son of John Augustus and Elizabeth Putman from Parker County, Texas. His father is a son of William J. Putman from Alabama, grandson of Ezekiel Putman of Georgia. They were here in 1910.

 

JOHN A. PUTMAN  Guemado, Socorro County

He is 29 TX, Mary A. 21 TX. My best guess is that he is a son of John M. Putman from Jackson County, Alabama and from Texas since 1880. In 1900 he was listed as Austin Putman. Only a guess.

 

FRANK E. (ERNEST FRANKLIN) PUTMAN  Cedarville, Torrance County

He is 63 IN, Magnolia B. Carpenter his wife is 46 TX, Viola A. 23 OK, James H. 20 TX, Laura A. 16 OK, Edna O. 14 OK and her twin Edgar F. 14 OK. In 1900 the family was in the Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory of Oklahoma. He was listed then as Ernest F. Putman, and in El Dorado, Jackson County, Oklahoma in 1910. His son Jack was in Jackson County, OK in 1910. Nola is widowed in Amarillo, Texas in 1930 living with her son Edgar who is married then. He is a son of John Warren Putnam and Mary Rogers. He was at home with them in 1870 in Marshall County, Indiana, and then in Wise County, Texas.

 

JACK A. (ALTON) PUTMAN  Cedarville, Torrance County

He is a son of the above Frank Ernest Putman. He was with the family in Oklahoma in 1900 and with his new wife in Jackson County, Oklahoma in 1910. He is 33 TX, Nellie Mae Weyrick 29 OH, Walter R. 9 OK, Vera L. 6 OK, and Velma M. 4 OK. They are back in Jackson County Oklahoma by 1930. They traveled back and forth several times trying to homestead here.

 

 

NEW MEXICO 1930 CENSUS

 

NORA L. PUTNAM  Albuquerque, Bernalillo County

She is 66 IA and still widowed. She runs her own dressmaker’s shop. She is the widow of Charles Franklin Putnam from Massachusetts. They were in Arizona in 1900 and she has been here widowed ever since. Her son Israel is still here in town too.

 

ISRAEL PUTNAM  Albuquerque, Bernalillo County

He is now 44 AZ MA NE and is a plumber. Clara his wife of almost 11 years is 42 NM and they have Norma 7 NM. Israel Osgood is a son of Charles Franklin and Nora Putnam. He was born in Arizona, and has been here with his widowed mother since the early 1900s. He and Clara were just married here in 1920.

 

ROBERT E. PUTNAM  Albuquerque, Bernalillo County

He is 26 TX TX TX and works for the newspaper. Grace, his wife of 5 years is 25 TX. He looks like the son of Joe Putman as seen in Wichita County Texas in 1920.

 

JOHN S. PUTNAM  Clovis, Curry County

He is 40 CO PA TX. He is sales manager for a car dealership. Lina his wife is 37 TX. They have been married about 16 years. They were here in 1920. He is John Sidney Putnam, the son of Frank Shephardson Putnam and Laura Alma Peacock.  He was in Lyon County, Kansas, in 1900 and 1910. New England family that went to Warren County, Penn and then out here.

 

JOHN B. PUTMAN  Carlsbad, Eddy County

He is 31 AR AR AR and an automobile mechanic. Virgie L. his wife is 28 AR, and they now have Carl 12 AR, Dow W. 10 AR and Bill H. 7 AR. He is John Villette Putman, a son of Joseph Henry Putman and Missouri Edens from Yell County, Arkansas. He was born there and married to Vergie there in 1920.

 

G. P. (GERRIE PRICE) PUTMAN  Cottonwood, Eddy County

He is 66 TX GA AL and is a farmer. He states he is married, but no gal is around. He is a son of Thomas Rogers Putman and Mary Ann Flemming from Caldwell County, Texas. He was born there and orphaned there in 1870. He then went to El Paso and was superintendent of schools there. He was married twice and is still listed in El Paso now with his wife Belle.

 

CLYDE PUTMAN  Otis, Eddy County

He is 30 AR AR AR and a farm laborer. Rosa his wife of 2 years is 26 AR and they Wendell A. 8/12 NM.

 

ELLEN A. PUTNAM  Fort Bayard, Grant County

She is 28 WI WI WI and a waitress at the U. S. Veterans Hospital.

 

NELSON PUTNAM  Fort Bayard, Grant County

He is 29 WI NY ME and a patient at the U. S. Veterans Hospital. Both he and the above Ellen say they have been married 11 years so I guess they are a couple. He is a son of Nelson J. and Cora M. Putnam from Brown County, Wisconsin in 1900 and Rock County in 1920. He wasn’t married then, but must have gotten married very soon thereafter. This is a Dutch family originally from New York.

 

JOHN W. PUTMAN  Hobbs, Lea County

He is 45 TX US US and widowed. He works as a tank builder in the oil fields. He looks like John Wesley Putman son of James M. Putman and Melinda Majors from Cooke County Texas and Marion County Alabama before that.

 

CLAUD PUTMAN  Deming, Luna County

He is 65 PA NY NY and divorced. He is lodging and is a building constructor.

 

ROBERT G. PUTMAN  Deming, Luna County

He is 24 KS NY NY and divorced. He is a policeman in the city. Age is way off. Says he was first married at age 29. He is actually 59 and has been in Grant County since the turn of the Century. He was married in 1901 and in the 1910 census, and divorced there in 1920.
