NEW YORK 1840 CENSUS

 

In 1840, both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, etc.

Again, I will list these families by county and by proximity to each other. I will also use the spelling that was used in the census as to Putnam and Putman.

 

JAMES A. PUTNAM  Albany W5, Albany County

Listing is 000011  001010001. James Angus Putman has been here all his life. His father David died in 1832, and his mother Jeannette Angus is with him. In fact in 1850 she will still be here at age 71. JamesÕ wife is Nancy Sickles. They were married here February 24, 1834.

 

JAMES A. PUTNAM  Albany W5, Albany County

Listing is 111001  100101.

 

ELISHA PUTNAM  Albany W5, Albany County

Listing is 01000001  10001. He is still here and is now widowed. Hester Johnson died here November 3, 1835. Elisha will hang in there till 1854.

 

PETER PUTNAM  Albany W4, Albany County

The listing is 1000100  101010. He would be in his 20s (probably should be his 30s). In 1850, there is a Peter Putnam here who is then 45 NY and lives alone. By 1860 and 1870, he is has his family back with him. At any rate, I have no idea who he is.

 

ARCHELAUS PUTNAM  Independence, Allegany County

Listing is 0000001001  0011101. They were here in 1830. He is from New Hampshire and is wife is named Nancy Wood. HeÕs a son of the older guy shown here, Archelaus Putnam (#1903) and Martha Hawkins of Wilton, New Hampshire. HeÕs Archelaus 4th. He was born in Wilton. The line is this Archelaus > Archelaus 1903 > Archelaus 774 > Archelaus 286 > Nathaniel > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John Putnam. They will be here in 1840 & 1850.

 

C.     PUTNAM  Scio, Allegany County

Listing is 100001  00001. Probably another Cornelius.

 

J. (JOHN HENRY) PUTMAN  Wirt, Allegany County

Listing is 20001  10001. He is a son of Lewis and Annette Putman. He was born in Canajoharie, Montgomery County January 25, 1811. He married Hannah Cornwall here in about 1835. He will be here until he dies in 1891. The line (Dutch) is John > Lewis > Johannes > Lewis > Cornelius > Johannes Putman.

 

ELIZABETH PUTNAM  Almond, Allegany County

Listing is 02  000011. In 1830, Nathaniel Putnam (number 1916) was here who had a son, Nathaniel, in his 20s at the time. Elizabeth must be that sonÕs widow. She will be widowed here through the 1860 census.

 

SETH PUTMAN  Colesville, Broome County

The listing is 20002001  1000011. He has been here in Colesville from the 1820 census on. His first wife Jane Hall has died here in June 1835. He married Roxena Underwood in about 1838. These folks will be here in 1850. Also here are his son Freeman and his wife Esther Way and their 3 kids. Freeman will be in Luzerne County, PA in 1850 and then die there in 1852.

 

M. G. (MARTIN GILMORE) PUTMAN  Colesville, Broome County

Listing is 10002  00001. He will be here in 1850. He is a son of the above Seth and Jane Putnam. He was born back in Concord, Vermont in 1813. He married Clarissa Jane Parsons. His brother Franklin is living with him.

 

J. L. (JOSHUA LANKISTER) PUTNAM  Colesville, Broome County

The listing is 100001  01001. He is a son of Seth and Jane Hall Putnam, and was born February 8, 1808 in Concord, Essex County, Vermont. His wife is Lorinda Wedge, they were married here in about 1836. The young son is Francis Emery Putnam, born January 9, 1838.

 

R. (ROSWELL) PUTNAM  Sandford, Broome County

Listing is 0121001  0000101. He is number 1170. He was in Colesville in 1830 and will be here in 1850. He is a son of Samuel Putnam and Ruth Spencer. He was born November 13, 1790 in Charlestown, New Hampshire. His wife is Mary Parks.

 

ELIZA PUTNAM  Franklinville, Cattaraugus County

Listing is 000  1020010001. She is Eliza Carpenter the widow of Henry Putnam (1738) from Worcester County Massachusetts. He owned land here and died back in Mass. June 21, 1829. She is in her 30s the older woman maybe her mother. They are not related to the other families here in town who are Dutch.

 

JOHN PUTNAM  Franklinville, Cattaraugus County

The listing is 000010  100010. They are in their 20s. He and the next two guys are sons of David and Mary Putman from Cazenovia, Madison County. They are all in Huron County, Ohio by the 1850. JohnÕs wife is named Mary.

 

WILLIAM (WILLARD) PUTNAM  Franklinville, Cattaraugus County

The listing is 00001  00001. In their 20s. His name is actually WILLARD. The gal here is his first wife. He will marry Frances Maria Fairchild in Huron County, Ohio on August 29, 1849. They will be there in 1850.

 

SPENCER PUTNAM  Franklinville, Cattaraugus County

The listing is 200001  01001. He is in his 30s. His wife is Almira. HeÕll be in Ohio by 1850. He is also listed in Sardinia, Erie County with his folks David and Mary Putman.

 

JACOB PUTMAN  Hinsdale, Cattaraugus County

Listing is 10001 10011. He is listed as Pottman and would be a son of Peter and Mary here in town.

 

JOHN PUTMAN  Hinsdale, Cattaraugus County

Listed as Pottman, but he is PeterÕs son. Listing is 00011  0001. He married Sarah Ann Learn here January 1, 1839. She will die in childbirth January 15, 1841 and he will marry her cousin Mary Ann Learn on May 9, 1843. He lives next door to his folks.

 

PETER PUTMAN  Hinsdale, Cattaraugus County

The listing is 001100001  0011001. He is now in his 70s and Mary in her very late 50s. They have been here since the 1820, but this will be their last appearance as Mary will die here December 22, 1842 and Peter in February of 1844. Dutch folks I am pretty sure.

 

LANSING B. (BENJAMIN) PUTMAN  Auburn, Cayuga County

Listing is 0000200  1010101. He is a son of Aaron and Mary Putman who are presently in Victory, Cayuga County. He is married to a Sarah and will be in Livingston County in 1850, and with a new wife in Madison County in 1860. Sarah will have joined the Shaker faith by then.

 

FREDERICK PUTNAM  Genoa, Cayuga County

Listing is 0011001  0001101. He was here in 1830, and in the County in 1820. His widow Hannah will be living with her son John Wesley Putnam in Ontario, Wayne County in the 1850. She will die there October 19, 1856 at age 64.

 

A.     (ASA) PUTNAM  Brutus, Cayuga County

Listing is 020101  100101. He and Louisa will be here in 1850. HeÕs a son of Lewis and Nancy.

 

L. (LEWIS) PUTNAM  Brutus, Cayuga County

Listing is 111011  00001101. He is Lewis, junior. His folks were here in 1840 as well, the older woman would be his mother, Nancy Wilson. His father, Lewis #1722, died here March 18, 1845 at the age of 71.

 

P. (PERLEY) PUTNAM  Brutus, Cayuga County

Listing is 000021  100110. This is Perley Putnam another son of Lewis (1722). He was born here February 7, 1806, and is married to Margaret Ann Crampton. He will be off to Niles, Berrian County, Michigan shortly and be there in 1850 with the kids. HeÕll be there till he dies in 1875.

 

R. (ROBERT) PUTNAM  Brutus, Cayuga County

He is another son of Lewis Sr. and Nancy. CouldnÕt find the listing. The page was very light. His first wife Annice St. John has died in May 1839. He and his second wife Eliza Goodell will be here in 1850, so you can see the kids then.

 

JACOB D. PUTMAN  Cato, Cayuga County

The listing is 3112001  0011010. They were here in 1820. Jacob is a son of David Johannes Putman and Hannah Van Antwerp. His wife is Hannah Lewis. They came from Tribes Hill in Montgomery County about 16 years ago, and will be here the rest of their lives. Dutch family.

 

AARON PUTNAM  Victory, Cayuga County

The listing is 00100001  00020001. HeÕs been here since the 1820, but will be in Onondaga County by 1850 and remain there. In the 1855 State Census he states he was born in Montgomery County. The son shown here is Alanson.

 

JOHN PUTMAN  Sterling, Cayuga County

Listing is 10002000  00001000. Interesting listing. He is probably the son of John and Eve Putman who were in Victory in 1830. They are either around here or in Onondaga County where they will sell lands in 1845 and move to Wisconsin. The other male is a brother.

 

LEWIS PUTMAN  Sterling, Cayuga County

Listing is 01210001  00100010. He and the above John have moved over from Victory where his brother Aaron is now. By 1850, his wife Abigail will be back in Victory, and by 1860, they will be in Lafayette County, Wisconsin.

 

STEPHEN PUTNAM  Harmony, Chautauqua County

Listing is 0111001  0010101. In their 40s. He is a son of Aaron Putnam and Sarah Colburn. AaronÕs folks were Cornelius Putnam (339) and Elizabeth Perkins of Sutton, Massachusetts. Stephen was born in Hanover, New Hampshire. His wife is Lucy Fancher. Stephen and Lucy will be in Genesee County in 1850 and in Clarendon, Calhoun County, Michigan in 1860.

 

PHEBE PUTNAM  Ellery, Chautauqua County

Listing is 020100  0001201. She is Phebe Wilmarth, now the widow of Ephron Putnam. Ephron was a son of Jonas and Rhoda Putnam from here. He was born March 22, 1789 and just died here January 22, 1839. Phebe was born October 22, 1791 near Brooklyn, New York, and will die August 8, 1880. This is from a note on findagrave.com ÒPhoebe's father was with General Washington's Army when the British took New York during the Revolutionary War. She had a brother, Nathan Wilmarth of Frewsburg, Chautauqua County, N.Y. w/o Ephron Putnam. Phoebe md. 2nd Dec. 1841 - Phineas Annis of Carroll. Phineas first wife was Belle Verna Putnam, Ephron's niece. In the year 1808 Phoebe came to the town of Ellery from the East as a bride of 16 years with her husband, Ephron Putnam from either New Hampshire or Mass., and settled at West Ellery near the Quail Trap schoolhouse on Lot 42. Here they built their log house in the wilderness, and 11 children were born to them, 8 of whom grew up, married and raised large families, as the records of 1936 show over 500 descendants.Ó

 

JOHN PUTNAM  Ellery, Chautauqua County

Listing is 000000001  001000010. He is a son of Jonas Putnam (606) and his wife Rhoda of Sutton, Mass. His wife is Sabra Preston. Their kids head to Crawford County, Pennsylvania shortly and will be there in 1840. John and Sabra will be here through 1850.

 

HIRAM PUTNAM  Ellington, Chautauqua County

Listing is 002001  010101. AndrewÕs son was here in the 1830. Both he and Zerueah are in their late 30s now. They will be here in 1850, so you can get the kidsÕ names then.

 

? PUTMAN  Mena, Chautauqua County

This was almost impossible to read. In another revue, this guy turns out to be Tyler Palmer. Not one of ours. Only leaving it here as the guy was indexed as a Putman.

 

AMOS PUTNAM  Chautauqua (Westfield), Chautauqua County

Listing is 0000001  10001. He is a son of the next listed Jacob Putnam. The next several folks are his brothers. Amos was born in Andover, Windsor County, Vermont on April 14, 1804. He married a cousin, Dorcas Putnam in Wilton, New Hampshire September 2, 1834. His folks will die in a few years, and he and Dorcas will return to Wilton and spend the rest of their lives there. He will die November 4, 1888.

 

JACOB PUTNAM  Chautauqua (Westfield), Chautauqua County

The listing is 000000001  000000101. He is number 1882, a son of Jacob Putnam Sr. and Abigail Burnap of Wilton, New Hampshire. He was born there October 4, 1771. He married Mary Burton there January 14, 1796. In 1808, he and the family moved to Andover, Windsor County, Vermont, and in about 1835 moved here to New York. He will die here in Westfield on September 30, 1844. Mary will die on October 20, 1847 also in Westfield. Some of the children, especially daughters and sons John and George, will stay here, some will return to Wilton, New Hampshire.

 

RANSOM PUTNAM  Chautauqua (Westfield), Chautauqua County

The listing is 00001. He is another of JacobÕs sons. He was born in Andover, Vermont July 29, 1811. In a month or so, he will marry Anna Sumner on August 26, 1840. In 1860, they are in Kane County, Illinois. I donÕt find them in 1850.

 

JACOB PUTNAM (JR.)  Chautauqua (Westfield), Chautauqua County

Of course, a son of Jacob and Mary. His listing is 0000001  1000001. He just married Elizabeth Tryon in Monroe on April 23, 1835. He will die here in 1849, but I donÕt find his widow around in 1850.

 

JOHN PUTNAM  Chautauqua (Westfield), Chautauqua County

The listing is 01001  00001. Another of JakeÕs sons. John was born in Andover June 3, 1813. He married Sally Young in April 1837 here in Chautauqua. Not bad for having a child as old as they have here. HeÕll be here until he dies in 1900. Sally will die here February 1850. He will return east to Massachusetts and marry Hannah Ellis in Warwick, Mass. December 25, 1851, and then return here in the mid 1850s.

 

JOEL PUTNAM  French Creek, Chautauqua County

The listing is 00000001  00000000. He is a son of Jonas Putnam (606) and his wife Rhoda.

 

A.     L. (AARON L.) PUTNAM  Pomfret, Chautauqua County

He is listed 100001  110001. HeÕll be here in 1850, and we find he is from Massachusetts. He was born in Stow, Massachusetts April 25, 1804. He is a son of Nathan Putnam Jr. and Rhoda Gates. He married Almira ÔDollyÕ Osgood in Wendall in 1828. The next Nathan is his brother, and his mom is with him. His dad died in Wendall, Franklin County, Massachusetts in 1817.

 

NATHAN PUTNAM  Pomfret, Chautauqua County

The Listing is 020001  11002. He too is a son of Nathan Putnam, Jr. and Rhoda Gates. He was born in Stow, Massachusetts March 6, 1803. He married Eveline Beeman in Montague, Franklin County, Massachusetts August 29, 1829. His mother Rhoda is with him and will be again in 1850. This line goes back from this guy Nathan > Nathan (1681) > Nathan (703) > John (252) > Samuel > John > Nathaniel > John Putnam.

 

ABNER PUTNAM  Stockton, Chautauqua County

The listing is 0113101  1120001. He and his wife Vesta Mallery are both now in their mid 40s. We gave his line back in 1830. He is number 1318, a son of William Putnam (530) and Submit Fisk of Sutton, and then Buckland, Massachusetts.

 

AZUBA PUTNAM  Stockton, Chautauqua County

The listing is 000011  000000001.  She is Azuba Stanhope, AndrewÕs widow, now about 69 years old. SheÕll be here until 1864 when she died at age 94.

 

NEWELL PUTNAM  Stockton, Chautauqua County

He is a son of Andrew and Azuba. He is number 2839. The listing is 0001001  100001. He is in his 40s, his second wife Lucy Winchell is in her 30s. His first wife, Tracy Fenner, died about 1831, and he married Lucy here on September 10, 1833. This line, and all of AndrewÕs kidsÕ lines were given back in 1830.

 

GILBERT PUTNAM  Stockton, Chautauqua County

The listing is 1212001  101101. Gilbert is another son of Andrew and Azuba. He is number 2840, and was born in Brookfield, Madison County, New York on June 21, 1797. He married Thankful Rogers in Madison County on January 24, 1819.

 

OLIVER (OLVIN) PUTNAM  Stockton, Chautauqua County

The listing is 0100010  00001. He is number 2843, a son of Andrew and Azuba Putnam. He was born in Brookfield, Madison County, New York on July 27, 1804. He will die here in Stockton on January 22, 1863. He is married to Sally Smith.

 

ORIN PUTNAM  Stockton, Chautauqua County

Listing is 0010010  1210010. He is number 2844, a son of Andrew Putnam (1284) and Azuba Stanhope. He was born here in Brookfield January 5, 1807. He married Alvira Schofield here in February 1827.

 

UNION PUTNAM  Stockton, Chautauqua County

The listing is 010001  110001. And he too is AndrewÕs son. Union is number 2846, and was born in Brookfield June 6, 1809. He was a twin to Royal Putnam, who is still living at home with his mom. Union married Clarinda Frost here in 1831. HeÕll be a few towns away in Ellery in 1850.

 

RILEY PUTNAM  Charlotte, Chautauqua County

The listing is 100001  00001. He is number 3355, a son of Jesse Putnam (1671) and Lucy Coleman. He was born in Chester, Windsor County, Vermont on February 7, 1808. He is married to Hannah Field.  His brother Aaron is here in town too. Both will be here again in 1850.

 

A. D. (AARON DAVIS) PUTNAM  Charlotte, Chautauqua County

The listing is 110001  101001. He is number 3356, a son of Jesse and Lucy and was born in Chester, Vermont June 15, 1809. His wife is Abigail Lakin. They will be here in 1850. This line is Aaron > Jesse > John > John > Samuel > John > Nathaniel > John.

 

ABNER PUTNAM  Charlotte, Chautauqua County

Another of JesseÕs sons. This listing is 000001  1100010001. He was born in Chester, Vermont April 14, 1802. The woman in her 70s is not his mother, as both Jesse and Lucy are alive and well in the 1840 Vermont Census. This must be his wifeÕs mother. He married Alma Chandler of Chester, VT. His line is that of his brother Aaron. He will shortly return to Vermont and die in Chester on February 15, 1845.

 

HARVEY PUTNAM  Cherry Creek, Chautauqua County

The listing is 0220001  2003001. Harvey Cornelius is number 2664, a son of Joshua Putnam (1195) and Lucy Lathrop. He was born in Bethel, Vermont on February 6, 1798. His wife is Rebecca Steward. They were married in Bethel. His brother Reuben (2666), back in Vermont now, will briefly come out here in 1843, buy some land, but decide to go back to Vermont and stay put.

 

CHARLES PUTNAM  Villanova, Chautauqua County

The listing is 001000001  0011001. He is in his 60s, his wife Sarah Shaw, or the oldest female, is in her 40s. He is number 986a, a son of Charles Putnam (385) and Martha Rose. They were in Madison, Madison County in 1830. He will be here in 1850.

 

C. R. (CHARLES RANSOM) PUTNAM  Villanova, Chautauqua County

The listing is 10001  10001. He is the son of the above Charles Putnam. He is married to Abby Ann Johnson, and will be in Newbury, Cuyahoga County, Ohio in the 1850 census.

 

GEORGE W. PUTNAM  Chemung, Chemung County

The listing is 000001  0001. He is a son of the next listed Thomas, they live almost next to each other. He is gone by 1850.

 

THOMAS PUTNAM  Chemung, Chemung County

This listing is 00000001  0001001. He is 51 NH and his wife Lucy Morse is from Vermont. They are here living with their daughter Eleanor (listed here) in 1850 and 1860. He is a son of Thomas Putnam Junior and Mary Young. He was born in Charlestown, New Hampshire in August 1789. He has been in Broome County since 1817 along with his brother Seth. They will be here the rest of their lives. He will die in 1879, Lucy in 1865. His line is Thomas > Thomas > Seth > Thomas > Thomas > John.

 

ARCHIBALD PUTMAN  Bainbridge, Chenango County

The listing is 00002  00001. Looks like ArchieÕs brother is here too. Best guess is that he is LewisÕ son who is back in Root, Montgomery County in 1850. If so, this is a Dutch family. In 1850, there is a Hezekiah age 32 here who is probably the brother shown here. Archibald will be in Tioga County in 1850 and onwards.

 

NATHAN PUTNAM  Bainbridge, Chenango County

Listing is 00000001  00012001. He is number 2206, a son of Aaron Putnam (936) and Olive Osborne of Fairfield, Connecticut. Aaron was born in Danvers, Massachusetts, but moved to Connecticut before the Revolution and served in the Connecticut Militia during the War. Nathan is now 57 and Sibyl Lilly his second wife is 49. This line is Nathan > Aaron > Jonathan > Jonathan > Jonathan > John > John. He was in Otsego County in 1920 and 1930 and will be in Colesville, Broome County in 1850.

 

AARON PUTNAM  Peru, Clinton County

The listing is 00001  00001. He and Jane Ormsby were just married, they will be here in 1850, 1860 and all their lives. He is a son of the following Archelaus Putnam. Aaron was born here in Clinton County in 1818.

 

ARCHELAUS PUTNAM  Peru, Clinton County

He was here in 1830. Current listing is 20111001  1102101. He and Deborah Kimball were here in 1820 and will be here in 1850 and 1860.

 

JONATHAN PUTNAM  New Lebanon, Columbia County

Listing is 0010001  120000. In 1850 he is just across the border in Pittsfield, Berkshire County, Mass. with his wife Reliance Bristol. In 1860, she is widowed in Adams, Berkshire County. Jonathan married Reliance on September 22, 1825. He is a son of Jonathan Putnam and Lucy Haywood, and was born in West Stockbridge in 1797.

 

ELIPHALET F. (FOX) PUTNAM  Truxton, Cortland County

Listing is 100001  00001. He is a son of Calvin Putnam (number 1851) and Chloe Chapman of Wilton, New Hampshire, and then Massachusetts. Eliphalet was born in Heath, Franklin County, Massachusetts May 24, 1807. His wife is Betsy F. Buell. They were married here in 1837. He had first married her sister Persis K. Buell in 1834, but she died in 1836. Actually, Betsy will died in 1853 and heÕll marry again in 1857 to Jane Conklin. In 1850, they will be in Locke, Cayuga County, and in 1860 in Auburn, Cayuga County, NY. This line is Eliphalet > Calvin > Nathaniel > Jacob > Nathaniel > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John.

 

CALVIN PUTNAM  Truxton, Cortland County

Listing is 01110001  1110011001. Number 1851. Looks like his mother is with them. He has been here since about 1816, and will be till he dies. He is a son of Nathaniel Putnam from Wilton, New Hampshire. I gave his line back in 1820. His wife is Amy Clark. Also in 1850, AmyÕs mom is here and so the older woman shown here may be that gal.

 

JEREMIAH PUTNAM  Harpersfield, Delaware County

Listing is 10110001  2220001. He and Hannah Roe have been here and will be again in 1850. HeÕs in his 50s now. Number 2270, been here a while now.

 

JONATHAN PUTMAN  Poughkeepsie, Dutchess County

The listing is 0000001  100001. He is a son of Jonathan Putnam (1845), and was born in Andover, Vermont November 18, 1795. He came to Poughkeepsie and married Rebecca Powell here on February 9, 1832. They are both schoolteachers. Rebecca will die shortly, and Jon and the daughter, Lydia, will be in Somerset, Niagara County, N.Y. living with a Rowell family. In 1860, he will be in Waukesha County, Wisconsin with the rest of his brothers. His daughter Lydia (born in 1837) will still be with him.

 

JOHN PUTNAM  Black Rock, Erie County

Listing is 02220001  0001101.

 

WIDOW PUTMAN  Sardinia, Erie County

She is listed 01  00001, in her 20s. She is Phoebe Tillinghast, the widow of Robert C. Putman who died here in 1834. They only had the one son shown here. He is Thomas T. Putman born in 1833, and will remain here in Sardinia till he dies in 1902.

 

WILLIAM PUTMAN  Sardinia, Erie County

The listing is 1210001  0001101001. They are in their 40s, his mother in her 70s (Mary Ferguson, widow of George Putman who died here in 1829). He is a son of George and Mary Putman. He was born in Otsego County, and came here a while back. His father George died here March 14, 1829. All the folks here in Sardinia are Dutch out of Montgomery County, New York. He will be here in 1850, and his wife Elizabeth will be widowed here in 1860.

 

DAVID PUTMAN  Sardinia, Erie County

The listing is 00111001  10100001. They are in their 50s. Another son of George and Mary Putman. His wifeÕs name is Mary and was born in Rhode Island, but I donÕt have her last name. In a couple of years they will head to Huron County, Ohio. David will die there in 1848, and Mary and the kids will all be there. Their eldest son Spencer is next door. Spencer and a couple of other kids are also shown back in Franklinville, Cattaraugus County.

 

SPENCER PUTMAN  Sardinia, Erie County

Listing is 20001  01001. He and his second wife Almira are in their 20s. He is a son of the above David. He will be in Clarksfield, Huron County, Ohio in 1850, and then on to Mercer County, Missouri where he will die in 1866. The sons shown are Luther and Judson. Dutch family.

 

HENRY PUTMAN  Buffalo, Erie County

Listing is 00001  00001. Both he and Ellen are in their 20s. He is a son of Peter (2442) and Lucinda Putnam from Lockport, Niagara County. I donÕt find them in 1850, but they are here in 1860.

 

ELISHA PUTNAM  Essex, Essex County

Listing is 10002  0001. He is 25, Lavinia Eunice Truesdell is about 27, their son Truman Samuel was just born. They will be here through 1860, and then head to Kent County, Michigan. Not certain of his parents. A relative states he was born in Henderson, New York June 5, 1815. She further added that his father once operated a store in SackettÕs Harbor, and then ran a mill in Henderson in 1809. All of these towns are near each other near the coast of Lake Ontario. Current thinking is that he is a son of John Putnam (1741) from Fitchburg and Cambridge, Mass. That John was here in Henderson around 1811. John was married to Elizabeth Carlton, and both seem to have died by 1820. ChesterÕs mom seems to be Polly Barrett though. She may have been JohnÕs second wife. Just not certain. He will die out in Grand Rapids, Michigan November 30, 1889.

His son Victor moved to Sussex County, New Jersey for the rest of his life. Peter Senior was born there, fought in the Revolution and then went to Yates County, New York about 1814, where he died in 1835. Sarah Kinnan (shown here as the eldest woman at age 77) will be living here with her son Peter until her death in 1841. Peter and Margaret will be here in 1850.

His dad has moved to Michigan along with his brother James French Putnam, and his mom died in Brutus, Cayuga County, New York in 1827.

I guess Mohawk was split off as a separate town from Johnstown, which has gone into the newly formed Fulton County in the 1830s. Both towns are right on the border. At any rate, he is a son of John Arent. His wife is Maria Balch. She is his second wife. Jane Ellison died in 1834, and he married Maria in 1836. They will be here in 1850 as well.

He then moved to Oneida County, New York, and married Flora Edgerton in about 1825. They then moved here and will head off Chautauqua County, and then to Winona County, Minnesota in the early 1850s.

The listing is 1000001  01001. I believe his full name is Jedediah Dyer Putnam, number 2254, and is a son of Jedediah and Lois. He has just (1839) married Lucy Conger. Lucy had been married to William Andrews, and the children shown here are Andrews children.  They will have their first child later this year. They will head briefly to Huron County, Ohio in 1845, and be in Elkhart County, Indiana in 1850. Dyer will die there in 1851. Lucy and her son Dyer Conger Putnam will be in Allegan County, Michigan in 1860. Lucy will be there well into the 1880s, and die about 1889 or 1890.

He was born here August 17, 1790. He married Laura Bradley here February 22, 1813. She died in 1820, and he married his present wife, Betsy Stillwell, here on October 17, 1824. He will die here July 5, 1873 and she will die here December 6, 1881.

He moved out here in the 1820s and is a wheelwright and a cabinet maker. The area he lives in is called ÔPuts CornersÕ. He will move shortly to nearby Macomb with his son and be there (though not in the census index) in 1850 and will die there October 4, 1853.
