NORTH CAROLINA
CENSUS REPORTS
1790 - 1900
UPDATED OCTOBER 1, 2008
The first Federal Census was taken in 1790 and that data is available. However, earlier tax records exist and are helpful in determining who was where when. This section begins with the earliest information through the 1900 Census Report.
In the 1790 census, the columns are males over 16, males under 16 and females of all ages.
In the 1800 and 1810 census both males and females are broken into 0-9, 10- 15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
In the 1820 census males are broken down 0-9, 10-15, 16-18, 19-25, 26-44, 45 and older. Females are divided 0-9, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
In the 1830 and 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.
From 1850 on ages and states of birth are shown. In 1880 places of birth are listed for the person, their father and their mother. In the 1880 Soundex only families with children under 10 are listed. In the 1900 Soundex, all families are listed.
The first Putman or Putnam in North Carolina was Thomas Putman. He was a son of Zachariah Putman I, and was born in Essex County Virginia in about 1720. He married Elizabeth Barnet (or at least I hope that was her last name) in Culpeper County, Virginia in the early 1740s. He had gone to Culpeper County with his brother Zachariah Putman II and his wife Margaret. After his brother died in 1751, Thomas headed south into the Carolina Colonies. He will head into Northwestern South Carolina in the early 1770s. His sons John and Barnet will go with him, but his eldest son Benjamin will remain here, and almost all of the Putmans and later Putnams found in North Carolina are his descendants.
If you want a lot more details and information on the Southern Putmans, and virtually everyone in North Carolina is on that line, go to the Southern Putman Section and then to North Carolina and you will see the various families with all the info I have at this time. The files on Willis, Elias and Thomas Putman hold most of the information on families that were in North Carolina after the early 1800s. Information that I have on other families are included in the census data.
EARLY TAX
LISTINGS
THOMAS PUTMAN Granville County 1755. He is a son of Zachariah I, and is ‘The Patriarch of the Carolinas.’ His wife is Elizabeth Barnet.
JOSHUA PUTNAM Pitt County 1763. He may be from the New England family, but I think he is just a ‘late’ arrival from England. He is only here about two years, and then gone somewhere. I think he was the one who spawned the Putnam Family in Guilford County. Both he and that group were Quakers originally.
BENJAMIN PUTMAN Granville County 1764. This is Thomas and Elizabeth’s eldest. He is married to Elizabeth Griggs (I hope the last name is correct). He will be here in North Carolina all of his life. All of the Southern Putman families in North Carolina are descended from this Benjamin.
JOSHUA PUTNEL Pitt County 1764. Same guy as last year.
BENJAMIN PUTMAN Bute County 1771.
THOMAS PUTMAN Bute County 1771. He is my ggggg grandfather and his wife Elizabeth (Barnet I think). They will move to South Carolina in the next year or so. They are there to fight in the Revolution.
BENJAMIN PUTMAN Franklin-Warren-Vance 1771. He didn’t move the Districts just changed boundaries. It’ll be Granville again in a few years.
THOMAS PUTMAN and son JOHN Franklin-Warren-Vance 1771. This is his last listing. He and his sons John and Barnet will head South to upper South Carolina in a couple of years.
BENJAMIN PUTMAN Granville County 1784.
BENJAMIN PUTMAN Granville County State Census 1784-1787. He is shown with a wife, 2 other females and 7 other males.
BENJAMIN PUTMAN Granville County 1788.
NORTH CAROLINA
1790 CENSUS
This is the first Federal Census now that America is on it’s own after the Revolution. In the 1790 census, the columns are males over 16, males under 16 and females of all ages.
BENJAMIN
PUTMAN Granville County
He is listed in the Hillsboro District, but it is impossible to read the family listing. He is Thomas’ son and his wife Elizabeth Griggs. This whole area will be a part of Rutherford County in a few years.
JOHN PUTMAN Randolph County
He is listed nearby in the Hillsboro District. The listing (1-1-2) shows him, a wife and one son and one daughter or other female. He is Zachariah II's son from Culpeper County Virginia. He will be going to Kentucky shortly along with his brother Henry.
NORTH CAROLINA
1800 CENSUS
In 1800 both males and females are broken into 0-9, 10- 15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
BENJAMIN
PUTMAN Rutherford County
He is shown as over 45 with two sons, one under 16 and one over. There are 2 females between 16 and 26 and one between 10 and 16. It appears that Elizabeth Griggs his wife may have died by this time, or at least is missing. In 1810 he again has a wife, possibly still Elizabeth, but have no idea. The following listings are all his children. John & Thomas are still at home.
ELIAS PUTMAN Rutherford County
He is between 16 and 26, his wife under 16 and 3 youngsters, two boys and a girl. He was born in Bute County, North Carolina in 1771. He married Nancy Roberts December 27, 1796, and they obviously got down quickly producing kids. He will be here (though it will be in Cleveland County by then) until he dies October 5, 1848. Nancy will hang in until December 4, 1857.
GRIGGS PUTMAN Rutherford County
He is between 16 and 26 as is his wife. They have no children. He was born here in about 1778. His wife is named Sally. He will fight in the War of 1812, and then about 1816 will head to Alabama. They will be there in 1830 and he will die sometime in that decade, as Sally is shown as a widow there in Decatur. Morgan County, Alabama in 1840.
WILLIAM PUTMAN Rutherford County
He is between 26 and 45 as is his wife. They have a son over 16, one under 10 and 2 daughters under 10 years of age. He is the eldest child of Benjamin and Elizabeth, being born about 1765. I believe his wife is named Winnie. They will be here in 1810 and then he and his brother Wilson will go into Rhea County, Tennessee and by 1830, Winnie will be a widow there. She will go to Alabama with her brothers-in-law Griggs, John and Wilson. She will be near Wilson in 1840 in Lawrence County, Alabama. That will be her last showing.
WILLIS PUTMAN Rutherford County
He is between 26 and 45 as is his wife. They have one son and two daughters all under 10 years. An older son of Benjamin and Elizabeth, he was born in the early 1770s. He got his first land grant here in 1798. That was the same time he married Martha Rogers. They will be in this area (by then Cleveland County, and they will use the Putnam spelling). Willis will die in 1845, Martha into the mid 1850s. This is one of the families that has descendants to this Day in the Shelby area of Cleveland County.
WILSON PUTMAN Rutherford County
He is between 26 and 45, his wife between 16 and 26. No children are listed. His wife is Rebecca Morris. They were married here in the early 1790s. They will be here in 1810, and then go off to Rhea County, Tennessee with his brother William. They will be there by the early 1820s, and he will die there in the late 1820s. Rebecca is shown as a widow there in 1830. Rebecca will join John, Winnie and Griggs Putman, and go to Alabama. She is shown there as a widow in Jackson County in 1850 at age 67.
NORTH CAROLINA
1810 CENSUS
In the 1800 and again in this 1810 census both males and females are broken into 0-9, 10- 15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
BENJAMIN
PUTMAN Rutherford County
His wife Elizabeth Griggs has reappeared and both are over 45 with no kids at home. Their listing is 00001 00001. And, once again, every guy here in Rutherford County, later to be part of Cleveland County, is their son.
WILSON PUTMAN Rutherford County
He and his wife Rebecca Morris are between 26 and 44 and now have 7 children. The family listing is 20010 32010. He will soon head off to Tennessee and he will die there in the 1820s.
JOHN PUTMAN Rutherford County
He and his wife Lucy Covington are between 16 and 25 with one young daughter. The listing is 00100 10100. He is Ben’s youngest, being born in 1785 or 1786. He married Lucy here December 22, 1808. I think he is the John also listed just over the line in York County, South Carolina. There are a few ‘extra’ folks with him that I think belong to his brother Thomas who will be there in 1820, and is kinda missing now. At any rate, he will shortly move to Morgan County in Northern Alabama and be there through the 1830s and then in Lawrence County, Alabama through 1850 and both will die there in the mid to late 1850s. You’ll find more on him and his family in the Alabama Section of this website.
ELIAS PUTMAN Rutherford County
He and his wife Nancy Roberts are between 16 and 24 with 8 children and an older female over 45. She may be Nancy’s mother. They will be here forever.
WILLIAM PUTMAN Rutherford County
He and Winnie are in their late 30s or 40s by now, and they have 8 children. The listing is 60010 02010. They will go to Rhea County, Tennessee shortly with his brother Wilson. Winnie will be a widow by 1830, and then go to Morgan County, Alabama with Wilson’s son Wilson. Seems both guys died in the 1820s.
GRIGGS PUTMAN Rutherford County
He is shown as being over 45 which may be an error. He and Sally should both be in their late 30s at this stage. The listing now is 20101 20110. He will fight in South Carolina during the War of 1812 and was discharged there in 1816. They then headed off to Alabama, and settled in Morgan County. They are there in 1830, and Sally is shown there as a widow in 1840.
NORTH CAROLINA
1820 CENSUS
ELIAS PUTMAN Rutherford County
There are two listings for Elias and his family. One listing shows 231201 21001 and the other 311401 21001.
WILLIS PUTMAN Rutherford County
Willis likewise has two listings. One is 221101 10001 and the other 221301 00000.
NORTH CAROLINA
1830 CENSUS
In the 1830 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.
JEREMIAH
PUTNAM Guilford County
He is one of the family from Virginia that I can’t tie into. The family is Quaker. They will move to Tennessee and eventually to Missouri. Frankly I think this family is a ‘late’ arrival from England that came into Virginia in the 1750s. He is probably a son of Josiah Putnam who was received into the Quaker church here April 5, 1794. Josiah was probably a son of the Joshua Putnam who was here in Pitt County in the 1760s. Jeremiah first shows up in the tax lists of Caswell County, North Carolina in 1819. He and Susan Dean have three sons and two daughters. The listing is 3000001 200001. They were married April 4, 1823 in Caswell County. Susan will be widowed here in 1840.
BENJAMIN
PUTMAN Lincoln County
He is Benjamin Junior and his wife Margaret Branton with young Cornelia. The listing is 00001 10001
WILLIAM PUTMAN Lincoln County
He is listed 110001 10001. He is Elias Putman and Nancy Robert's son and his wife is Sarah Miller.
WILLIS PUTMAN Lincoln County
The family listing is 220101 10001. He is Elias' son in his 30s. His wife is Elizabeth Fanlin. There are more kids here than there should be so he either had more children than I note or probably had another family with him at the time.
WILLIS PUTMAN Rutherford County
This is Benjamin's son 00114001 00110001. Willis Senior and Martha Rogers are in their 50s.
ELIAS PUTMAN Rutherford County
Elias is 00111001 00100001. Benjamin's son is now in his 50s as is his wife, Nancy Roberts.
GEORGE PUTMAN Rutherford County
This is GRIGGS PUTMAN. He is in his 20s. The family is listed 00001 0001. He had just married Louisa in 1830. He is another son of Elias and Nancy Putman. They will have 3 kids by 1840, but aren’t in the index or anything. They are here in 1850 with 6 kids. He will die very soon after the census was taken as he was listed an invalid and died here September 13, 1850.
BARNET PUTMAN Rutherford County
He is a son of Elias and Nancy Putman. He is listed as Barny and both he and his wife are in their 20s. They have a young son and daughter. His wife is Ursala Poundland. The family is shown as 10001 10001. He was born in 1808 and will be here till he dies in 1868. This area will become Cleveland County in a couple of years.
THOMAS PUTMAN Rutherford County
He was just over the border in York County South Carolina the last two census returns. He is in his 40s as is Fanna or Hannah Lindsey his wife. The family is shown 0111001 0111001. They are here in 1840 and he seems to have died by 1850 as I can’t find him.
MARTIN PUTMAN Rutherford County
He is the Martin who married Muhulda Parker and will be a minister in Alabama, going there in 1835. He is a son of Thomas and Hannah Putman and was born in York County South Carolina in 1808. The listing is 00001 10001 as they were just married in South Carolina in the late 1820s. The tiny daughter is Nancy.
NORTH CAROLINA
1840 CENSUS
In the 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.
I am doing this by County as always, but instead of alphabetical I am listing as they appear in the census so you can see the proximity of the families. In many cases the kids all live next to or with their parents on the same farmlands.
SUSAN PUTNAM Guilford County
She is Susan Dean, now the widow of Jeremiah Putnam. They were here in 1830. The listing is 0101 011001. The neighbors are all Fields. The son Jeremiah junior will soon marry Charlotte Field. This is a Quaker family I can’t tie into any other family. The family will be here in 1850 and 1860. Susan will die in the 1860s, the rest of the family will be off to Callaway County, Missouri and be there by 1870. Then they will be there a long time.
BENJAMIN
PUTMAN Upper Regiment, Lincoln County
He is Willis and Martha's, son now in his 30s. Margaret Branton his wife is also in her 30s. The family listing is 120001 101001. Benjamin was born in Rutherford County November 14, 1802, and married Margaret here in Lincoln County in about 1827. This area will change to Cleveland County. Benjamin will be here till he dies March 26, 1877 and Margaret will be around till she dies April 8, 1897.
WILLIAM PUTMAN Upper Regiment, Lincoln County
He is Elias' son born about 1799-1800. He is shown as being in his 40s as is his wife Sarah Miller. The family is shown as 0111001 202001. They will be in Cleveland County through the 1850 census, and then I don’t find either of them in the state in 1860. The kids are around though.
WILLIS PUTMAN Upper Regiment, Lincoln County
He is the son of Elias Putman and Nancy Roberts, and is shown in his 40s and his wife Elizabeth Fanlin in her 30s. The family is shown as 1212001 310001. He was born about 1798, and will be here until he dies on November 8, 1846. Elizabeth will be widowed here until she dies in the mid 1860s.
JOHN PUTMAN Lincoln County
He is probably Willis and Martha's son. The listing is 00001 20001.
DAVID PUTMAN Rutherford County
He a son of Willis senior and Martha Rogers. He was born December 25, 1807. He is shown as being in his 30s as is his wife Rosanna Sanders. They were married here March 1, 1832. They will be in Cleveland County the rest of their lives. Rosanna will die December 27, 1879. David will die September 14, 1890. The listing is 100101 120001.
D. (DRUARY)
PUTMAN Rutherford County
This is Drewary or Druary Vance Putman, a son of Elias and Nancy Putman. He was born in 1815, and both he and his wife Sarah Spake are in their 20s. They were just married here May 11, 1837. The listing is 10001 00001. He will die in 1845 and Sarah will then marry John B. Scroggins. Their son, James Webster Putman will show up in 1860 in Cleveland County.
R. (ROBERTS)
PUTMAN Rutherford County
This is Roberts Putman another of Elias' sons who was born in 1804 and is shown in his 30s and his wife Lucinda Weaver is also in her 30s. The listing is 220001 000001. Lucinda will die, and he will marry her sister Susan Sanders in the 1850s.
ELIAS PUTMAN Rutherford County
This is Elias Senior. He is shown in his 60s and Nancy Roberts in her 50s. Their daughter Jenilla is with them. He will die here October 5, 1848. Nancy will be here until she dies December 4, 1857. Listing is 000000001 00010001.
WILSON PUTMAN Rutherford County
Listing is 10001 10001. He is a problem. I think he is a son of William Putman, but I just can’t pin him down. He next appears in Benton County, Alabama in 1850. He and his wife Susan Hullett are in their 20s with a son and a daughter under 5. They head off to South Carolina in about 1842, to Georgia in 1845 and then to Alabama by about 1848.
WILLIS PUTMAN Rutherford County
Willis Junior and his wife Polly Weaver are in their 30s with 2 sons and 3 daughters. The listing shows 110001 210001. He is a son of Willis Putman and Martha Rogers. He was born here in 1805, and married Polly in 1832. They are here in 1850, and he will die shortly afterwards May 22, 1851. Polly died in the 1860s sometime.
ELIAS PUTMAN Rutherford County
Elias Junior, son of Elias, is in his 30s and his wife Nancy Weston in her 20s. The family is shown as 111001 11001. He will die here about 1849, and Nancy will be widowed in the 1850. Nancy won’t remarry, and will be with her son William in Cleveland through the 1880 census.
BARNET PUTMAN Rutherford County
He is a son of Elias and Nancy Putman. He was born about 1802 and married Ursula Poundland in 1826. He and Ursula are now both in their 30s. The listing is 110001 201001. He is a blacksmith and will die here January 22, 1868. He lives right next to his brother Elias, or may be living with them.
W. (WILLIAM)
PUTMAN Rutherford County
This is William Putman and Nancy Spurlin both in their 20s with one son shown in the 5-10 age group. I believe it would be John only a year old. They were only married in 1840. He is a son of Willis Putman and Martha Rogers. He was born here January 11, 1811. He will be here until he dies August 23, 1871. Nancy will go on until September 28, 1899. There is an Isaac Spirlin living next door who would be Nancy’s brother. They live right next to T. & L. Putman.
T. (THOMAS)
PUTMAN Rutherford County
This is Thomas Putman now shown in his 60s. His wife Frances is in her 50s. He is a son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Putman. There is a son, probably Elias, 15-19 and two daughters one 15-19 and one in her 20s.
L. PUTMAN Rutherford County
The listing shows a female in her 20s with two daughters between 5 and 10. Now, I think this is just a screwed up listing. I do not find the Elias Putman who is a son of Willis Putman anywhere and yet he was alive and well in this county. I think this is a listing for 'Lias Putman. If so there should be two young sons, not daughters, between 5 and 10. I think the marks just simply got into the wrong columns and I go with this listing being for Elias Putman. But just a guess.
NORTH CAROLINA
1850 CENSUS
Now, just a quick comment. There are thousands of Pitman families all over the State. They out number Putmans 5 to 1. In several cases Pitmans are indexed as Putmans. Also I checked most of the Pitmans to see if they might be Putmans but couldn’t find one. There were several Putmans over the years indexed as Patman, Rutman or Butman, but I got most of those.
MATILDA PUTMAN Beaufort County
She is listed as a black age 40 NC. I am listing her because others that are white pop up here in 1860 and 1870.
PUTMANS in Cleveland County
All these people you are going to see have been in Lincoln and Rutherford Counties up till now. No, they didn’t move. Cleveland was formed out of Rutherford and Lincoln in 1841. Most of these folks live in Shelby, Rippys, Sulphur Springs and Waco. And most will be here forever and so will their kids and their kids. Virtually everyone here was born in North Carolina, and this will be the case for the next 70-80 or so years. For this census, I am listing families in proximity to each other, and not in alphabetical order. Connections are easier to see this way.

L. (LEONARD) G. PUTMAN Shelby, Cleveland County
He is 24 NC and there is a Unity Putman who is 31 NC. With them are Eli Wilson 15 and his brother Columbus Wilson 11. Unity is probably a widow of someone named Wilson, or they are her brothers. They live next door to Joseph Wilson and his family on one side and the widowed Violet Putman Wilson on the other side. Okay, this guy is Leonard M. There were no children born in the time frame of the Civil War, but I do not find any service records on Marcus, and don’t think he served as he was listed as an invalid in the 1850 census. He and Emily are in Cleveland County in the 1900 Census, both in their sixties then. I do not find them in 1910.
MARY PUTMAN Shelby, Cleveland County
Mary Weaver is listed as being 35 NC but should be 65 NC. She is the widow of Willis Putman Jr. who died here May 22, 1851. She still has at home Mary 35 NC, Martha 26 NC, Susan 20 NC, Narcissa 19 NC and Benjamin F. Putman 18 NC. She is here in 1880 and Susan and Narcissa are still with her.

S. L. & RACHEL

She is age 2 NC, living with Rufus and Mary C. Botts. They have a 2 year old daughter as well, so Mary isn’t their mommy. Her sister Rachel 1 NC is here too.

Sarah London is 25 NC and has a 2 year old son T.W. (Thomas William Marion) with her. She is the widow of Willis Junior's son Thomas Putman who died of T. B. on February 1, 1870. Then there are two more of her children living with J. S. Wilson. They are C. S. Putman 4 and Alonzo 9 months old. Both of these last two kids died young and long before the 1880 census. Sarah is one of many widows after the Civil War. You have to be careful here as there were two Thomas Putmans marrying two gals named Sarah. She is not Sarah Robbins, wife of the other Thomas.

He is in York County, South Carolina in 1900. He is with his son Robert in Catawba York County South Carolina in 1910. His wife Hester is with her other son Henry and his sister Sally in Catawba York County in 1910. Must be a divorce of sorts.
M. A. (MARGARET ANN) PUTMAN Stices Shoals (T-3), Cleveland County
This is Margaret Ann Forbes 36 NC widow of Leroy Putman who was killed in the War. Their daughter Eliza A. 13 is still there. He was a son of Elias’ son Willis Putman and Elizabeth Fanlin, and was born in 1832. He married and was listed in the 1860 Census as Lenny though his name should be Leroy. His wife was listed as Margaret. He enlisted in the CSA at age 29 on October 1, 1861. He was killed at Gaines Mills, Virginia in the Civil War on June 26, 1862
SIMEON PUTMAN
Stices Shoals (T-3), Cleveland County
He is 44 NC and Rebecca Copeland his wife 32 NC. There is an Emma Putman 12 living with them. Emma was not listed with them in 1860 so she might be a daughter or she more likely be a niece taken in after her father died in the War. There were several Putmans killed and there are several odd children found all around the county with relatives and other families. He is Willis and Elizabeth's son.
NANCY PUTMAN White Plains, Cleveland County
Elias Junior's widow Nancy Wesson is now 60 NC. Still with her is James Craton Putman, 16. James also seems to be listed again with William Putman and Nancy Spurlin, who may be his real parents. From ‘local sources’, I have it that James was an illegitimate son of Nancy Wesson. He will marry Amanda Wesson on December 7, 1871. They are in Cleveland County in 1880 and Gaston County in 1900.
DOCTOR PUTMAN Kenansville, Duplin County
This county is over by the coast. He is Doctor Shiflin Putman, Roberts' son. He is 23 NC. He is listed as living with Mary Putman and her kids in the Bass family. Then there is Mary Putman 20, James 16, Araminta 12, Robert L. 3 and Charles 1, all NC. They are listed with the family of Lewis 55 and Mary 54 Bass. Now, this mess needs a little straightening out. Doctor and his older brother Martin Van Buren Putman were painters and were working in this area. Martin was killed by a blow to the head in early December 1869 and an inquest was held December 10, 1869. Mary (Bass) Putman was Martin's wife. The two youngest children were sons of Martin and Mary. Not sure who the two older children are, but I guess they are actually Basses and Mary siblings. Mary is, however, Martin's widow, and Lewis and Mary Bass are her folks. She and the kids will be still here with her folks in 1880.
HAMBY PUTMAN Cherryville, Gaston County
He is William Hamby Putman, son of Benjamin and Margaret Putman. He is 34 NC and there seems to be no wife here. In 1860 he had a wife named Margaret, but no wife is listed here in 1870. In 1880, Margaret a wife, the right age is with him. I assume she is the same gal and his first wife, but was simply out somewhere here in 1870. I am not totally sure though. The children are Alexander 11, John 8, George 5, Eliza 3 and Jane 1. He enlisted in the CSA at age 24 on May 5, 1862. He was wounded in the head at Drewry's Bluff, Virginia on May 13, 1864 and was in the hospital until December 1864 when he was promoted to Sergeant and assigned as a provost guard in Raleigh until the end of the war in April 1865.
DEVALES PUTMAN Friendship, Guilford County
He is now 48 NC, Elizabeth Ann Owens 44 NC, John D. 17, Julius 11, Nora 8, Mary 6 and Walter (James Walter) 3. He was born here. Devalles may be a son of Jeremiah and a first wife as Jeremiah and Susan married in 1823. Or he may belong to a brother of Jeremiah who died way back in the 1820s or even in 1819. Not sure. The rest of the family was here in 1860. They left shortly after that for Callaway County Missouri where they will stay forever. Young John will be in Piatt County, Illinois in 1880 working on a farm.
