He is

William 20 NC is a weaver at the mill. They have been married for 30 years and
have 5 children. I don’t find them before or after this. Must be a clerical
thing. Got to be David Carpenter and Catherine Carpenter from here though.
He is
25 NC NC NC and a mill hand. He has been married 2 years to Lula Chaney 23 NC.
He works at a cotton mill as does Lula. He is a son of David Putman and
Catherine Carpenter from Crowder Mountain. He was born April 19, 1885 and died
June 3, 1955. Etta Lula Chaney was born March 2, 1882 and died October 13,
1952. By 1920 they are in Kings Mountain, Cleveland County and are still there
in 1930.
BENJAMIN F. PUTMAN Lowell, Gaston County
He's
a problem. He lists himself as 65 VA IRE NC and his wife Lula B. as 36 NC. They
have been married less than a year, and both work in a cotton mill. However, he is in Charlotte in 1920 and
states he is then 40 NC and Lula 46 NC. Going on the 1920 age, he is a son of
Elias William Putman. He is 52 in 1930. No kids in any year.

LIZZIE PUTMAN Jonathans Creek, Haywood County
She
lives right next door to Joseph, above. She is 25 NC. Her mother, Mary L.
(Putman) Grimes was the widow of Montvale Putman. Mary and Elizabeth were with
Joseph in 1900, and Mary has since remarried. Also here is a Charley Putman age
3 listed as a boarder. The best I can guess at is that Charley was a son of
Joe's son James who is missing in this census.
MARK PUTMAN Jonathans Creek, Haywood County
He is
18 NC and living with Willard Conrad. Some other kids were here with George
Conrad in 1900. George Conrad is Mary Conrad Putman's dad. Mary was the wife of
Montvale Putman. I guess that he is one of Mont and Mary's young 'ens. He will
be married here in 1920.
BEANEY PUTMAN Waynesville, Haywood County
She
is Robena Emiline (Brock) Putman who was widowed (?) here in 1900 with daughters
Jessie and Effie. Well, she is still a widow I guess or her husband Edward is
just never around at census time. But now has not only Jessie and Effie, but 4
more kids all listed as sons or daughters. Beaney is obviously a hot little
trick here. Anyway, she is 36 NC, Jessie 16 NC, Effie 13 NC, Clarence 9 NC,
George 6 NC, Annie 4 NC and Verda 2 NC. Maybe she runs a day care center for
the family. Also William Hobert lives next door and he is another son. There is
a small rumor that she may have remarried and then divorced and taken back her
old Putman name. She may just have had a couple of kids out of wedlock as I
find no other marriage records for her.
HOBERT (WILLIAM HOBART)
PUTMAN Waynesville, Haywood County
He is
13 NC and a nephew of Charles Grilling. In 1900 he was listed as William H. and

MIRD PUTMAN Waynesville, Haywood County
He is
22 and a son in law of Cordelia Green. The name is hard to read, but he is
Robert Murdock Putman one on Edward and Etta Putman's kids from Mitchell County
and was born there. His wife Margaret ‘Maggie’ Green is 18 and they have a son
Jack 5 months old. They were married here April 15, 1908. In the WWI draft

in 1930 and John is married in Rutherford County then.
RINDA PUTMAN White Oak Township, Haywood County
She
is 23 NC and a stepdaughter of Matt and Rhoda Franklin. She has two children
Esther 2 NC and Callie 1 NC. I assume that she is Linda Price, widow of James Putman.
James was a son of Joseph Putman and Matilda Conrad from here. Rhoda must be her mom who has
remarried.

was born in Kentucky in November 1871 and was a son of Renson and Elmyra
Pittman from Tennessee. In 1880 he is at home with them in Morgan County
Tennessee and listed as Pittman. Now it seems he has taken on the spelling of
the Putmans here in North Carolina. Wataugua County is on the northwest border
of North Carolina and is on the border of northeast Tennessee. Obviously
couldn’t write and his name was transcribed as it sounded. That’s how my Putnam
name got changed to Putman in Virginia in the 1650s. He will die in Lower
Creek, Caldwell County February 25, 1942. He married Mollie in 1898. She was a
daughter of John Andrew Chambers and Plutina C. Eldridge. She was born in
December 1875 in Wilkes County North Carolina and will die in Morgantown, Burke
County North Carolina February 15, 1932. The name has remained Putman still.
