OHIO
1860 CENSUS
J. W. PUTNAM Athens Township, Athens County
He is
24 NY a clerk living in a hotel.
GEORGE PUTNAM York Township, Athens County
He
was here in 1840 and 1850. Look up 1840 for his line. He is a son of David
Putnam from Marietta. George is a farmer 43 OH, Susan A. Westcott 39 VA, David
19 OH, Sara W. 14 OH, Betty C. 12 OH, Susan A. 8 OH, George C. 2 OH and May 9
months old. They will be here in 1870, and she will be widowed in 1880 and
1900.
LUCY PUTNAM Dover Township, Athens County
She
is 26 NY a schoolteacher living with Samuel Roberts. She looks like the
daughter of Cornelius Putnam and Matilda Bradley from Wayne County New York.
ABNER PUTNAM Higginsport Township, Brown County
He is
50 VA, Emily M. 31 NY, Sarah E. 13 OH, Daniel 10 OH, Maria 5 OH. Then there is
a Harriet Loocy 16 NY. Harriet looks like Emily's sister. Now, as to who he is.
In 1810 the only Putmans in Virginia were in Fauquier County (Southern
English), Hampshire County (German), John Putnam in Bath County (New England
English), and Ernestus Putman from New York in Jefferson County (Dutch). Beats
me how he fits in. I don’t find him at all later, but the son Daniel will be in
Kentucky and be there all his life.
HENRY PUTMAN Johnson Township, Champaign County

out here in 1817. In April 1841, he married Marianne Davis. She died in 1847.
On December 19, 1850, Henry married Margaret Wolgamuth. Margaret was born May
15, 1831 and will die here December 6, 1901. There were no children in the
first marriage and seven in the second. Henry was a farmer and very active in
the Baptist church and the local schools. Henry will die here at the age of 98
on January 16, 1913.
DAVID PUTNAM Ohio Township, Clermont County
A son
of John Putnam from New York. He was here in 1850 as was his dad. He is now 41
OH a plasterer, Ann E. Grenell 38 DC, Harriet 11 OH, John 10 OH and George 4
OH. And his dad, John 75 MA (should be NY) is still with him.
JOHN PUTMAN Ohio Township, Clermont County
He is
75 MA though was NY earlier. He's been here a long time and is still living
with his son David Putman. A family bible states John was born in Johnstown,
Montgomery County New York in 1781. Dutch family out of New York State.
ARCHIE PUTNAM Yellow Creek, Columbiana County
Archibald
is a son of Isaac Putnam and Mary Ann Brawley (Vermont folk that were here in
1850). He is 37 MD (should be OH), a carpenter living with his brother James
who for some reason is listed as Obediah.
OBEDIAH (JAMES HERBERT)
PUTNAM Yellow Creek Township,
Columbiana County
In
1850 he was listed James H. Putman. The Obediah must be a clerical error. He is
a son of Isaac Putnam born in Portage County Ohio. He is now 41 OH, Mary
Cunningham 34 PA, Rufus 15 OH, Thomas 11 OH, Archie 8 OH, Mary A. 5 OH, John 2
OH. Also there are his brother Archie 37 MD (should be OH) and Mary Cunningham
65 PA who is Mary's mother. Mary is a widow here in 1870.
HENRY H. PUTNAM Liberty Township, Crawford County
He is
a son of Peter Putman and Maria Schneider from Somerset County Pennsylvania
German family. He is 60 PA, Mary 57 PA. Also there is Benjamin Speer? 15. The
Speer? family lives 2 houses away and Henry's brother Michael lives next door.
MICHAEL PUTMAN Liberty Township, Crawford County
Son
of Peter Putman and Maria Schneider from Pennsylvania. He is 63 PA, Sarah 50 OH
is his second wife, Esther must have died a while back. At home are Westel (?)
20 OH and Isabelle 17 OH. His brother Henry is living next door. Michael was
born in 1796 and died in 1869. He was first married to an unknown woman and
then on April 2, 1820 to Esther Landis. Michael junior was born in the first
marriage. Michael and Esther had no children that there is any record of
ADALINE PUTNAM Cleveland Cuyahoga County
She
is new here. She is 36 MA a bookbinder living with John Grannis. She was single
in Boston, Massachusetts in 1850. No idea who she belongs to.
ELBRIDGE PUTNAM Cleveland, Cuyahoga County
He is
a railroad conductor listed 35 NY, Emily Adeline Melandy his wife is 30 VT.
Also there is also here A. H. Kennedy, a female 28 VT. Emily and a bunch of
kids will be in Deerfield, Mass. in the 1870 census. There is a record of an
Elbridge being born in Deerfield in 1823 (Probably on the death record which
was in Deerfield), but no parents listed. There was a note on Ancestry that his
parents were Asa Putnam and Rhoda Hildrith. Asa was a son of Thomas Putnam
(#189) and Rachel Weatherbee of Acworth New Hampshire. Emily was listed here as
VA, but I corrected it to VT. Elbridge wasn’t born in NY, but in MA based on
the info in the 1880. He was listed in 1850 as single in Bennington, Vermont.
According to his wife’s family records he died here in 1866, and that’s why
Emily returned to Massachusetts. She will die there in 1895.
E. G. PUTNAM Cleveland, Cuyahoga County
He is
25 NY and in a boarding house. He is a druggist.
HENRY PUTNAN Cleveland, Cuyahoga County
Another
new arrival. He is 30 NY living with Lucius Pitkin. I think this is Henry Locke
Putnam from Madison County New York. At least that guy will be here in 1870 and
onwards.
RANSOM PUTNAM Warrensville Township, Cuyahoga County
He
was listed as Charles R. Putnam here in Newbury, Cuyahoga County in 1850. He is
now 45 NY, his wife Abigail Anna Johnson has died. He still has these kids at
home Cordelia is 22 NY, Henry 20 NY, Harriet 17 NY and Lucy 12 OH. There is
also a George Wright 8 OH. Ransom was born March 12, 1815 and will die here
August 21, 1890. This line goes back Charles R. > Charles (986) > Charles
385 and Martha Rose of Preston, Conn. > Eleazer > Eleazer > John >
John Putnam.
DAVID PUTNAM German Township, Darke County
He is
39 OH, Sarah Mills 38 OH, and there are two boarders. He is a son of Ernestus
Putman and Elizabeth Gray from Darke County where he was born August 4, 1821.
He is a lawyer. Dutch family out of New York State. They were married in Darke
County November 19, 1842, and were in Preble County in 1850. They are here
through 1880, and he is widowed here in 1900.
E. B. (EDWIN BRICE) PUTNAM German Township, Darke County
He is
Edwin Brice Putnam, son of Franklin Putnam and Anna Grant Brice. His father has
recently died in July 1859. He is an attorney 31 OH. Martha J. Wilson his wife
is 21 OH. She is a daughter of Judge William Martin Wilson and Louisa Dosey.
The rest of this listing is in this order: Anna G. Brice Putnam, his mother, 52
PA, James Franklin his brother 20 OH, William Davis his brother 18 OH, Louisa 1
month old and probably Edwin's daughter, Metella Putnam18 OH. I have no idea
who Metella, a female Putnam, is. She might be a wife of one of the brothers,
or just a niece or cousin of sorts. Edwin will die here April 11, 1868.
WILLIAM PUTNAM German Township, Darke County
He is
19 OH and must be William Davis Putnam son of Franklin and Anna Putnam. He is
also listed with his brother Edwin and the rest of his family. This has to be a
double listing.
LEWIS PUTMAN Sandusky Township, Erie County
He is
a son of Jacob Putman and Hannah Lewis from Cayuga County New York. Dutch
family. He is 29 NY and a brakeman on the railroad. His wife Caroline Burnham
28 NY and Jennie 5 NY. They are in a hotel or boarding house with a bunch of
other folks. Lewis married Caroline Burnham back in New York on October 24,
1854 and they moved here a short time ago.
MARY PUTNAM Clear Creek Township, Fairfield County
Listed
as Marg but looks more like Mary. She is 17 IL living with a C. Thomas.

Jannetta 5 OH.
MARY I. PUTNAM Montgomery Township, Franklin County
She
is 16 OH in the Ohio Institution for the Education of the Blind.
MATILDA PUTMAN Columbus, Franklin County
She
is 17 (19?) OH a 'servant' living in a boarding house. John Putnam of
Washington, Franklin County had a daughter Matilda who is now gone. The age is
a bit off, but must be her.
PETER PUTNAM Columbus, Franklin County
He
was here in 1830 through 1850. He is 68 PA, Susan 62 PA, Mary 40 PA, Louisa 29
PA, Samuel 12 OH and Laura Lynch a servant 19 OH. Now, Mary and Samuel were not
with this family in 1850. In 1850 there was a Samuel Skidd age 2 OH living next
door with his father Samuel. I just bet Peter took him in and Mary was his
mother and their names are actually Skidd. There were no sons shown in the 1850
for Peter, but he did have them in 1840 so maybe Mary is a daughter in law and
Sam her kid. Just don’t know. He is a son of John Putman and Sarah Schneider of
Frederick County Maryland and then Somerset County Pennsylvania. John was a son
of Andrew and Catherine Putman German family from Maryland via Pennsylvania.
ANTHONY PUTTMAN Cincinnati, Hamilton County
Still
here. He is now 34 and his sister Catherine is 46, both from Germany. With him
are Henry 17, Margaret 15 OH and Ferdinand 16 (should be 21) Prussia. Henry and
Margaret were with him in 1950 but had Lonninger as their last names. Ferdinand
is his brother and was with his father John in 1850. Their father John is in
Indiana now.

the Reverend George Putnam, number 1523, of Roxbury, Massachusetts. He was born
there February 9, 1836. He will return to Massachusetts and live in Lexington
before heading westward. He will marry Margaret Abbott there on December 13,
1860. They will eventually move to California, and he will be widowed there in
1900 in Redlands.

20 OH, Lydia F. (Florilla) 18 OH, Charles C. 16 OH, Josephine F. (Frances) 14
OH, Eveline C. (Clementine) 12 OH, and Albert B. 10 OH. Still not positive on
Calvin, but in this 1860 census he is in South Danvers, Massachusetts and
boarding. Looks like he has divorced Belinda. She is listed as farm manager so
it sees she is on her own. She will be here without Calvin through the 1880.
DAVID PUTNAM Townsend Township, Huron County
He
was here in 1850 as was his mother Mary. His father David from Madison County
New York had died in the 1840s. This family will be in Mercer County Missouri
in 1880. David is 38 NY, Lucy Ann Hardy is 29 NY, Selma 6 OH, Clark 5 OH and
Delos a son 3 OH. Delos is a family name, but this kid will be listed as David
in 1880. Delos will die in Arizona in 1918. David’s brother is named Ansel
Deloss. Delos will be in South Dakota in 1900. Think they are part of the Dutch
family, but not positive.
LUTHER PUTNAM Townsend Township, Huron County
Luther
Charles Putnam was here in 1850 and is a son of David and Mary Putnam from
Madison County New York. He is 44 NY, Lucy Ann Ewell 38 NY, Adelaid 13 OH and

son of David and Mary. He was an Innkeeper here in 1850, a laborer today. He is

William Henry will die here on August 11, 1865.

mistakenly listed W. W. instead of N. W. He's been here a long time. He left
the Post Office and now runs a boarding house. He is 60 VT, Maria D. (Douglas)
48 NY, Annie E. 26 OH, Mariah L. 15 OH, John H. 18 OH, Mary E. 12 OH (not
listed in 1850), Frank 9 OH and Albert B. listed as 7 OH, but should be 12 as
he was 2 in 1850.
ANNA E. PUTNAM Granville Village, Licking County
She
is 24 OH living in a Female Seminary. She is a daughter of Rev. Franklin Putnam
of Darke County. He died, the rest of the family is with Edwin and this
family's Ann Elizabeth is missing.
CHARLES (MARSH) PUTNAM Jersey Township, Licking County
The
Reverend is still preaching here. He is now 58 OH, Abbie (Edgerton) 53 CT,
Lydia H. 22 OH, David 18 OH, Douglas 16 OH, Howard 13 OH and Julia S. 11 OH.

are sons of Rufus Putnam and were with the family in 1850 in Springfield, Clark
County Ohio. In 1870, he will be a newspaper owner in Chillicothe and in 1880
he will be in Franklin County and the editor of the 'Times'. Nice upward

then at age 62.
THOMAS PUTMAN Union Township, Licking County
He is
23 VA, Elizabeth 24 OH and William G. 9 months old OH. Has to be a part of the
Fauquier County gang, but I can't find him in 1850.

was in Clarke County Ohio in 1820 and in Champaign County Ohio in 1850. He is
from the New York Dutch family of Johannes Putman and Elizabeth Vedder from Schenectady.
He is now 63 NJ, Charlotte Spellman 57 NY, James M. 32 OH, Joseph H. 22 OH.
Then there are Margaret 28 OH and Charlotte 24 OH. Margaret Hart is James'
wife, Charlotte is their daughter. Next door is Isaac's other son William R.
Putnam and his family. They will be here in 1870.

is 16 NY and a student.
LAFAYETTE PUTMAN Toledo, Lucas County

the battle of Stone River, Tennessee.

Mantle his wife is 36 OH, Charles 14, Elizabeth 12, William 9 and Horace 4 all
OH. In 1850 there was a Horace 5 months old. Perhaps he died and this is a new
Horace junior. In 1870 this young Horace is 14 so age is correct. In 1900,
Horace Junior is in Allegheny, Pennsylvania with a wife, Frances. Horace senior
was born March 12, 1818 and will die here May 12, 1869. Narcissa is shown in
1870 as a widow. Narcissa was born November 12, 1824 and will not die until
Christmas Day December 25, 1903.

Richfield June 7, 1852. He will live most of his life in Hinkley, Ohio where he
will farm.
EMANUEL PUTMAN Dublin Township, Mercer County
There
are going to be two listings here. In this one he heads his family, has his
mother and brothers with him. Then you will see later a listing for Jane Putman
and all this mob again. In the census, the listings are two page apart, but are
same family, but ages are a little off. I guess they moved to a new house and
listed at both. Anyway, this listing shows him 28 PA, Eliza 23 OH, Cynthia 1
OH, William J. 10 OH (no idea who he is), Lizzie his mother 60 PA, and then his
brothers William 30 PA and Philip 26 PA. The 10 year old William does not show
up in the listing under Jane Putman. In 1880, Emanuel is listed as Daniel. I
believe Emanuel to be correct. And I don’t know who his dad was. They just
popped up in 1850. At any rate, Emanuel married Elizabeth Roebuck here on
October 21, 1858. He is widowed here with more kids in 1870. He was born April
23, 1832 and will die here in Dublin April 28, 1916.

A son
of Peter Putman and his first wife Margaret Adams (PA German). He is 29 OH,
Sophia Mihm 25 OH, Fidelia 7 OH, Hugh 5 OH and Alexander 1 OH. Isaac married
Sophia Mihm in Van Wert County on August 19, 1852.

This
is that dual listing I mentioned earlier under her son Emanuel. Eliza Jane is
60 PA, William 28 PA, Philip 25 PA, Emanuel 26 OH and his wife Eliza 20 OH and
their daughter Cynthia 1 OH. She appears with these kids as a widow in 1850,

Indiana in 1880.

and George are listed also with other families working on their farms. She is
Lucinda Hedges, now widow of Joseph Putnam. In 1840 they were in Fulton County
Illinois and probably here in 1850 but not listed. Joseph was a son of Hazeal

He is
32 ENG, Eliza 32 ENG, George 14 ENG, Henry 12 ENG, Emily 9 OH, Frederick 7 OH,
Thomas 6 OH, Kate 4 OH and Ellen 2 OH. Now, many people born in Canada were
listed as ENG, so I would guess they came down from Ontario as opposed to
sailing over the briny and leaping straight out to Ohio.
ALFRED PUTMAN Concord Township, Ross County
He is
26 OH, Rebecca Jane Day 25 OH, Marcellus (Maurice) 4 OH. Also there is Lucy
Hewitt 82 VA. Possibly she is Rebecca's mom who remarried. German folks. He is
a son of Peter Putman and Kisiah Hoddy and was born in February 1834. He
married Rebecca Jane Day on October 11, 1855. They are in Ross County through
the 1910 census. He will die here March 29, 1916. Rebecca will die on October

there May 9, 1914. German family out of Hampshire County Virginia.
HARRIS (HARRISON?) PUTNAM Green Township, Ross County

me. Not part of the German family though.

He is 28 (actually 38) OH, Lucinda 21 OH and they have William A. 9 OH. His first
wife Nancy Thomas has died and he married Lucinda Wilkins here on December 9,
1858. They are here through 1880 and both have died by 1900.
MARY PUTMAN Bucskin Township, Ross County
She
is listed 68 VA and living with William Cochran 62 PA. She would be the
spinster daughter of Philip and Catherine Putman from Hampshire County.
Catherine died in 1852. Mary's age is actually 60 and not 68.
PETER PUTMAN Concord Township, Ross County
Peter
is still here now at 63 VA, Kisiah Hoddy 58 OH, Edward 24 OH, John 21 OH, Jesse

Schneider from Somerset County Pennsylvania (German). His eldest son Alpheus is
nearby and listed separately with his family.
ANDREW PUTNAM Sugar Creek, Stark County
He is
a miller, 43 PA. His wife Judith Slater 41 PA for some reason is next door with
the Absalom Slater (her brother) family. With Andrew, however, is his son

OH. She wasn't listed in 1850 as a daughter, not sure who she is. Then comes
his daughter Christina 25, and her kids Joseph 15 OH, Mary S. 13 OH and Josiah
11 OH. In 1850 she used her married (a widow I guess) name of Shunk, now they
all seem to be listed as Putmans. He is a son of Andrew Junior and Elizabeth
Lenhart. He was born January 24, 1794 and died November 27, 1882. He was
married three times. First to Susannah Weimer in about 1819. She died September

accident in Central Falls, Rhode Island in 1853. Some 13 people were killed
when he drove his train in front of another one at a Switch Station. He was
accused of manslaughter. They said his watch did not keep correct time and that
he was “way too young to run the most difficult leg of the train route.” He

He is
24 MA, a carpenter living in the Murray House Hotel. Looks like the son of

and Elizabeth 49 MA Gerrish. Samuel Patrick Putnam is a son of Samuel Putnam

Greenwich, CT and also from Woodstock, NH. The family ran a Chevy dealership in
Woodstock. Just a passing note.
Isaac
and Mary Ann’s son is still here, and is still living with his brother James’
family, but now James is dead and gone. All these kids here belong to James and
his widow, Mary Cunningham. I am sure he did not marry Mary after his brother’s
death. In 1880 he is still here, but Mary gets the main listing in that census,
and he is just a ‘boarder.’ Anyway, Archie is 45 OH a carpenter, Mary

and Margaret Weiss > David Putman and Helena Beekman > Jan Poutman.
He is
an iron molder, 38 NY, Laura 29 MI and Alice 10 IL. This looks to be a dual
listing for the Henry in Lake County. And they look like the family in
Cincinnati in 1880 listed as A. C., Laura and Alice Putnam. Ages and
birthplaces fit.
He is
47 NH a gardener (retired), Emily Peavey, his wife, is 43 NH. Also there is Ann
Peavy 69 NH (Emily’s mother), and a servant from Canada West, Mary E. Brewer

widowed since then. Ransom was born March 12, 1815 and will be here till he
