OKLAHOMA

CENSUS REPORTS

1890  -  1930

UPDATED NOVEMBER 25, 2008

Oklahoma became a dumping ground for all the American Indians being pushed out of the southern and southwestern portions of the United States to make way for the cancerous white man migration westward. The state was intended as a huge Indian Reservation, but by 1872 the Railroads began crossing the state and the United States 'bought back' a great deal of Indian land and pushed them even further west. In 1889, the first Land Rush brought some 50,000 settlers into the area.

The first Territorial Census was taken in 1890 and a Federal census was taken in 1900 breaking the state into Oklahoma and Indian Territory, there were separate census reports.

Oil brought more people into the Territory around 1900 and by 1909 Oklahoma became the 46th of the old 48 states, beating out only New Mexico (47) and Arizona (48).

She is a widow 42 AL ?? ?? Nov 1857 with a son Oscar 18 AR ?? AL Feb 1882. Probably one of ours, but she wasn’t in the 1880 Arkansas census. Another one of those times that you would kill if only you could get the 1890 census that is a big ‘black hole’ of missing time.

JOSEPH N. (NEWTON) PUTNAM  Banner, Garfield County

He is 42 IA (actually IN), Jennie (Barbara Jane Workman) 44 IA and Carrie Alice 12 KS. The entry states ‘reported by daughter’ so not overly accurate. There should be a son, David, here but he is not listed. The census guy must have only asked ‘Who are your parents?’ He is a son of Edwin G. Putnam and Sarah Oswalt. His father was born in Cavendish, Vermont and then went to Wells County, Indiana with his father Newton Putnam. Joseph was born December 25, 1857 in Wells County. The family was in Pleasant Township, Appanoose County, Iowa by 1860. His dad Edwin died here October 29, 1899. Jennie is a second wife. According to a local historian, Zeke Putnam was the City Marshal of Allen, Oklahoma who was assassinated January 16, 1909 in Pontotoc County by a hired gunman. The killing avenged the death of a young man Putnam had shot who had resisted arrest. It was quite a scandal involving prominent people in the area. Power and influence reigns to this day as it did so long ago. The killer of Putnam was to be hung, but got off on a technicality, was retried and sentenced to life. The person who hired the killer was a prominent citizen who had a good lawyer.  He lost a lot of his land to the lawyer in payment. The story goes on...After the killing of Zeke Putnam, those who had knowledge were also in danger.  The nearly full-term pregnant wife of one of the principals who participated in the plan was also shot and killed because she knew too much. Then shortly after those deaths, a well-known rancher from Ada was bushwhacked and killed by a hired gunman. Authorities tried to tie the killings together, but mob violence took its course resulting in a lynching of four men taken from the jail in the middle of the night. This event made history and was the beginning of the end to the days of the Wild West in our Country.  The story also made legal history and the case is cited in law books regarding appeals. Pearl will die soon and Zeke will marry Claudia Goyne here in Ada on March 1, 1903. Then he’ll be shot, of course, in 1909. The kids plus two more are all here living with Claudia and her parents James and Ruth Goyne in what will be Grady County by 1910.
