OREGON
CENSUS REPORTS
1850 - 1930
UPDATED OCTOBER 13, 2010
The Northwest portion of America was in dispute between the English and the United States for many years. The opening of the Oregon Trail in 1842 brought a great influx of American settlers into the area and this led to the Treaty of Washington in 1846 and the area became a part of the United States. In 1848 Oregon became a Territory and in 1859 it became the 33rd state in the United States. The first census was taken in 1850 while it was still a Territory.

operates a drug store here in Salem. He will die here May 26, 1905 and Mary is
widowed here in 1910 through 1930. Here is part of history and an obituary: From the History of the Willamette Valley,
"Enterprising,
farsighted and efficient, George Washington PUTNAM was accorded a prominent
position in mercantile circles of Salem, and as an agriculturist he was equally
successful. He was a useful and influential member of society and played well
his part on the stage of life. He was born in Herkimer County, New York, in
1842, and his parents, George and Margaret PUTNAM, were members of old and
prominent families of the Empire state, in which he was reared and educated. He
taught school for a time and about the year 1863 yielded to the lure of the west,
taking up a homestead in Minnesota. On February 29,1864, when a young man of
twenty-two, he enlisted in the Union Army and was assigned to duty with Company
C, of the Ninth Minnesota Regiment of Infantry. While in the service he was
entrusted with the handling of drugs and acquired much valuable knowledge
regarding pharmaceutical matters. Mr. PUTNAM was honorably discharged in 1865
and operated a farm in southern Minnesota, where he was engaged in the drug
business. About 1875 he came to Oregon and purchased the old Geer donation
claim of approximately two hundred and eighty-five acres in the Waldo Hills
district. He cultivated the place for about fifteen years, following
diversified farming, and brought his land to a high state of development. He
constantly improved the property, which is still owned by the family. In 1889
Mr. PUTNAM moved to Salem and purchased the Matthews drug store on State
Street. At the end of about two years he secured a more desirable location on
Commercial street and was there engaged in business
until his death in 1905. He was an honest dealer and his well known reliability
brought him a large patronage. His son, George Ivan, afterward took charge of
the store and conducted the business for six years, when it was discontinued.” Obituary,
Daily Capital Journal, May 27, 1905: Sudden death of G. W. PUTNAM. One of Salem's well known business men dies after short
illness. George W. PUTNAM, one of Salem's well-known and most respected
citizens, died suddenly at his home on Center and Cottage streets at 10 minutes
past 12 o'clock last night. Notwithstanding the fact that Mr. PUTNAM had been
in ill health for sometime, there was no thought that death would come at this
particular time, and his death is therefore a heavy blow to his family and
friends. All of yesterday, until late in the afternoon, Mr. PUTNAM stayed in
his place of business, and not until his friends insisted upon his going home
would he leave. Arriving at his residence he rapidly became worse, and in a few
hours, surrounded by his loving wife and children, his spirit passed away. At
the time of his death Mr. PUTNAM was 62 years of age, having been born in the
state of New York July 30, 1843. He came west when about 22 years old, and has
lived here ever since. The deceased leaves a wife and two children, one
daughter, Marguerite, and a son, Ivan, to whom the sincerest sympathy of the
whole community is extended in this their bereavement.
