SOUTH
CAROLINA
The Putman family did not spread south into South Carolina until the early 1770s, or at least there are no records remaining of their presence prior to this time. Several Putman families arrived in South Carolina in the 1770s and 1780s. Barnet, John and James Putman came to the Ninety Six District, the portion now in Union District (County) in the early 1770s and Daniel and William arrived in the neighboring Laurens District (County) in the late 1780s.
In 1770 James Putman was given a Land Grant for 250 acres in the old Craven District which is now in Union County. It is most likely that this James Putman was the James mentioned as being a minor son of Zachariah Putman in the 1753 will of Zachariah in Culpeper County, Virginia.
Of the four sons of Zachariah Putman: John, Daniel, James and Henry Putman; it is known that Henry went to Mason County, Kentucky in 1794 or 1795. One of the other three brothers, James, seems to be the one mentioned above receiving a land grant in South Carolina in 1770. This James had a wife named Joice and lived the remainder of his life in Union County until his death in late 1811. Daniel Putman sold his lands in Culpeper, Virginia in 1789 and moved to South Carolina with his wife Sarah and son William; they arrived in time for the 1790 census.
Also the sons of Thomas Putman of Granville County, North Carolina came to western South Carolina. John and Barnet Putman came in the early 1770s each receiving land grants in the old 96 District in what is now Sedalia, Union County, South Carolina. Thomas himself arrived by the 1780s.
This section will cover the lives of the two sons of Zachariah Putman II, James and Daniel. This section will also cover the lives of the Reverend John Putman and Barnet Putman, who I believe to be the children of Thomas Putman, son of Zachariah Putman I.
These men and their families played an important part of the Putman Family History in the Up Country of South Carolina.
