44 NY lives with them. He is a son of Hiram Putnam and Ruhama
Marshall. He was born September 23, 1837 in Essex, Essex County, New York. He
married Thetis there in about 1866. This is an old Vermont family. Hiram was a
son Asa Putnam (#897) and Mary ‘Polly’ Fowler of
Orange County, Vermont. Asa’s dad was Tarrant Putnam
(#334) and Mary Porter of Danvers, Massachusetts. You’ll find info on Asa back in the 1790 Vermont Census. It was the only time
he was here. Look back there for the lineage. They are in San Diego, California
in 1920.

Putnam (1235) and Almira French. He was born in Croydon, Sullivan County, New Hampshire February 2, 1839.
He studied at the General Theological Seminary in New York, and graduated in
1863. He first married Belle G. Farr, who died around 1872. He then married his
present wife, Ella C. Chester, and moved to take over St. John’s Parish in
Poultney (below and west of Rutland on the New York border). I guess he picked
up a new Parish here in maple syrup country. I remember when we would pass
through St. Johnsbury on the way to Burke Mountain to ski, that we could smell
the maple syrup boiling in St. Johnsbury from a couple of miles away. Yum.
Anyway, they will be here in 1880, and then be going to Salt Lake City where he
will take over a Church. Nathaniel will die in Salt Lake City April 26, 1891.
The son John Farr was born here October 1, 1870 and will die out in Salt Lake

couple of kids from his first marriage are still at home with his folks in
Cambridge.
He is
44 VT VT VT, Malinda Smith
39 VT VT VT and Ethel G. 2
VT. Now, as to Lovell. I don’t
find him earlier. He should be a son of Luther and Rhoda (Fullington)
Putnam. That family was from Franklin County in the 1830s and in Chittendon County in the 1840s. Luther died there in early
1850 and the family dropped out of sight. Lovell was born in 1836 and married
Betsy Joy in Westford, Chittendon County February 6,
1861. She died there in August 1866. It looks as if Lovell married Malinda in
the late 1870s. She will die April 1, 1888. Once again never see him before or

S. 6 VT and Ellen R. 1 VT. George was a son of Levi and Phebe
here in Wardsboro. Also here are her father Amasa
Plimpton 76 VT and her sister Carrie A. Plimpton 40 VT. She and Everett and
Ellen will all be in Springfield, Mass in 1900.
He is
30 MA MA MA, Martha 47 VT VT VT. He should be the son of
the following John and Lurissa. In fact in 1900 Lurissa is with them. But, I currently have their son
Franklin Henry in Iona County, Michigan. This Frank uses a Mass birthplace now
and in 1900, so may just be a kin of sorts. Don’t know yet, but I’m working on
it.
He is
68 VT VT VT, Lourissa 60 VT VT VT. He is Asa’s son. He was born
here in Guilford on March 10, 1812. They were here in 1870 and in Guilford and
Halifax before that and started out in Guilford in the late 1830s. His dad
moved to New York State, but he has hung in here all his life. He will die here
April 14, 1892 at age 80.
She
looks to be Laura Ann Ball, the wife of Fernando Cortez Putnam. She is 52 VT VT VT and lives with her nephew
James Gould. She will still be with James in 1900. Problem is she is also
listed at home in Woodbury, Washington County with Fernando???
Hiram Babbit’s son is now 53 VT VT VT, Ellen E. Stephens 44 VT VT VT, LaVern H. (Sarah in 1870) 17
VT, Lillie M. 16 VT and Dencie N. 11 VT. He is a

He is Hiram Babbit’s son. He was in Illinois in 1860,
Iowa in 1870 and married. He lives next to Jennie Gifford 32 VT VT VT and her mother Charlotte
Gifford 62 VT. He will marry Jennie here March 27, 1881 and they will be here
in 1900.
She is
16 NH NH NH and he is 14 NH
NH NH and work on the farm
of Elisha and Laura Morgan. They are kids of Caleb Putnam and Joanna Badger
from Croydon, New Hampshire. Ida was born in
September 1863, and Hiram Arthur or Arthur Hiram was born April 19, 1866. His
mother was from here and she died in 1868. He was shown here with the Morgans in 1870, but was listed as Arthur Morgan 4 NH. The Morgans, probably Laura, may be kin of his mother. Hiram is
married here in 1900.
Hiram Babbit is now 80 VT MA MA, his
wife Sarah Ellis 83 VT MA VT. They have a servant now.
Hiram Babbit’s son is still here. He is now 56 VT VT VT, Harriet Cushing his wife

Maria Barnes. Delia will be widowed here in 1900 by herself.
He is
now 49 VT VT VT, Chastina Lyman 44 VT VT VT. They were in Barnard in 1860 and ‘overlooked’ in 1870.
He is a son of Hiram Babbit Putnam. Chastina will be widowed here in 1900.
He is
19 VT VT VT, a laborer on
the Burnett farm. He is a son of Hiram and Harriet from Barnard. The folks are
in Rochester now. Edwin will be married here in 1900.
He is
now 55 VT VT VT, Lucia H.

number 2685, a son of Ezra Putnam (1205) and Mary Townsend of Bethel. He was
born August 28, 1819. He was at home in 1860 and obviously didn’t get married
until the late 1860s. He was married here in 1870 and still living with his
folks.
He is a
son of Ezra Nelson and Lucia Putnam. He was born in Bethel August 3, 1848. He
is now listed as 30 VT VT VT,

for a Crosby family. She is also listed with her father, Jonas Putnam, in

In 1900, Sarah Jane will be widowed and living with her daughter in Lowell,
Massachusetts.
He is a
son of Dr. Levi Putnam and Phileta Wentworth. He is
now 35 VT VT NH, Mary F. Tripp 35 VT MA MA, Annie W. 5 VT and Clara P. 1 VT. His mother Phileta 75 NH is still living here as she was in 1860. Come
1900, Asa is ‘missing’, Clara is with her grandmother
Clara Tripp here and I think the Mary in Brattleboro is her mother.
He is
16 VT VT VT, a laborer on
the Eastman farm. He is another one of Jonas’ kids that was abandoned here back
in 1870.
He was
here in 1860 with Mary Ann. Then in 1870 he was missing and all the kids were
wards of the state. He’s back now. He is 53 VT MA MA
and his daughter Arletta is 18 VT VT
VT.
She is
26 VT VT VT, and lives with
her sister Harriet Aldrich also 26 VT and her husband Wilbur Aldrich. They are
daughters of Hiram Augustus Putnam and Harriet Cushing from Rochester. Jennie
is actually only 16 as she was 6 in 1870. Again, sloppy census taking.
She is
66 VT MA MA and is a housekeeper for William and
Lydia Lewis. Her daughter Carrie R. Putnam 29 VT VT VT is with her. Caroline Howard is the widow of John
Putnam. She was widowed in Rockingham, Windham County in 1870 with Carrie and a
few more older kids.
He is
27 VT VT VT, a farmer,
Julia E. Swift, his wife, is 26 VT VT VT. Julia will be widowed here in 1900 with a son not yet
born. He is a son of Timothy Putnam and Emily Eaton from Springfield. He

Solon Putnam and Mary Ann Rice of Springfield. He was home in 1850 and 1860,
then married in Rockingham, Windham County in 1870 and now back home. I lose
them in 1900. In 1910 he is single in Claremont, New Hampshire and in 1920 in
Sutton, New Hampshire living with his son John.
He is
32 VT NH VT, Lois J. Rice 23 VT VT VT. They live with her folks Orrin Rice 60 VT NH VT and
Jane Weston Randall Rice 50 VT VT VT.
As in the case of Wesley here in town, the census taker just didn’t take full
notes. This guy is George Franklin Putnam, son of Joseph and Sally from here.
George will die here March 30, 1898. Lois is widowed in 1900.
Wesley
George is 34 VT VT VT, Mary
Ann 34 VT VT VT. They are
listed as son and daughter of John D. Ward 62 VT and Esther A. Ward 56 VT. The
Wards are Mary Ann’s folks. Wesley is a son of Orin (1173) and Sarah Putnam of Weathersfield. The family moved to Charlestown, New
Hampshire and they were there in 1860. I don’t find the family in 1870 in
either state. In 1900 he is 55 and has a new wife Nellie who is only 36.
He is
13 VT VT VT and works on
the farm of Hiram and Sarah Gould. Looks like a dual listing for Timothy
Marble’s son listed with him in 1870 and 1880 as George H. His mother is a
Gould and these are probably kinfolk.
She is
25 VT VT VT and a
housekeeper with Granville and Addie Knight. She is a daughter of Jonas Putnam
and Mary Jane Rowe from West Windsor.
He is
29 VT VT VT, Nellie R.
Spring, his wife, is 29 VT VT VT,
Harry O. 8 VT, Bertha E. 6 VT, Gertrude A. 4 VT and Herbert A. 2 VT. Also there
are Nellie’s folks John 71 VT and Deliliah 68 VT
Spring. Jehial is a son of Oliver Putnam and Julia
Ann Gould of Rockingham, Windham County. He was at home there in 1860. In 1870
he was with his widowed mother who had remarried. Nellie will die in a few
years and he will marry Mary Ann Buck August 13, 1885. She will die January 30,
1894 and he is widowed here in 1900 and 1910. Jehial
was born here March 5, 1852 and will die here November 22, 1912. I don’t find
the son Harry Oliver in 1900, but he married Elizabeth Pronty
in Lawrence, Mass. on August 7, 1894.
Julia
Ann Gould has been the widow of Oliver Putnam since the 1860s. She is now 48 VT
NH MA, Erbane G. (George) is 19 VT, Willie A. (Abram)
16 VT.
He is
29 VT VT VT, Laura E. 20 VT
and young Frank E. 2/12 VT. He is a son of Joseph and Sally Putnam, and was
born in Springfield.
He is
now 73 NH VT MA, Mary Ann Rice 69 NH CT BAY? Timothy and Betsy’s son was born
back in 1806.
He is
42 VT VT VT, Ellen Rollins
his wife is 36 VT NH MA. They were just married here in 1870.
TIMOTHY PUTNAM Springfield, Windsor County
He is
now 77 NH NH NH, Emily

who was born in 1802. He is Timothy 4th.
He is
49 VT VT VT, Sarah Ann
Gould 44 VT MA MA, Nora A. 25 VT, Mary J. 15 VT and
George H. 13 VT. He is a son of Timothy and Emily.
He is
38 VT VT VT, Nettie E.
Parker 18 VT VT VT, Adin, a son, 4 VT, Solon (named for his granddaddy) 3 VT,
and Arthur 11/12 VT. He is a son of Solon Putnam and Mary Ann Rice. He was born
here. He was home in 1850 and gone somewhere in 1860. He married Nettie

are her mother Electa (Barnes) Pulsipher
73 VT and her sister Lucy Ann Pulsipher 45 VT. Found
all about Sarah in the IGI. He is number 2822, a son of John Putnam (1270) and
Rosanna Howard of Grafton. He was born there September 14, 1840, and married
Sarah May 26, 1874. Prior to that he wandered all over as a youth. In 1870 he
was in Deer Lodge, Montana, went to Nevada in 1871, California in 1872 and then
back here by 1873. He runs a hardware store in town. They’ll be here in 1900
and 1910.
He is
47 VT, Lucinda R. 46 VT, George W. 18 VT, Edgar E. 16 VT and Hattie 7 VT. There
are two nieces there; Cora Abbot 15 VT and Lydia Hutchinson 10 MO. William is a
son of Joel Putnam and Mindwell Tucker. He was born
here.
She is

and then He will die March 14, 1897 and she on December 6, 1897. They will have
4 kids who are with her relatives in Claremont in 1900 and then they will get
married and be there the rest of their lives.
She is 42 MA MA
MA and lives with a Miller family. The best choice is
the daughter of Ebenezer Putnam and Betsey Cross. She was home in Danvers
in 1850 and 1860 with her widowed mom.
Harriet
Burnham is 72 VT CT CT and lives alone. She is the
widow of Laban Putnam. Been here all their lives.
In the
1900, we get the month and year these folks were born. But, they are not always
accurate. The census taker recorded the age and month born. It was later that
the year was added, so the year may be off by one year either way. Indexing and
using the Soundex, was done as a make-work project in
FDR’s Administration. It was also used to determine when and how much money was
needed in the then new Social Security System.
ARTHUR G. (GEORGE) PUTNAM Addison, Addison County
He is
39 VT Dec 1860, Bertha Samantha Clark 31 VT Sep 1868, Leola B. 11 VT Oct 1888,
Earle H. 9 VT Jul 1890, George W. 8 VT Jan 1892, Vesta
C. 5 VT Nov 1894, Gayle A. (a son) 3 VT Sep 1896, Evelyn C. 1 VT May 1899. He
is a son of George Putnam and Martha Hurlburt. He was
born here in Ferrisburg December 17, 1860. Arthur and Bertha were married here
October 13, 1885. See 1860 for his father's listing so you can find the
lineage. Arthur will die, and Bertha will marry John Carr and be here with all
the kids in 1910.
CHARLES PUTNAM Shoreham, Addison County
He is
28 NY Sep 1871, and the son in law of Nathan Tirrill.
So far so good, then there are these 4 folks all listed as Putnams:
Ida B. 18 VT, Florence 14 VT, Minerva 6 VT and Annie just born in June 1900.
Ida Bell Tirrell is his wife of 1 year and Annie is their’s, but I have no idea who the others are, probably
siblings. Best I can determine is that Charles is the son of Adam Putnam and
Pauline Monroe from Hague, Warren County, New York. They will be nearby in
Chittenden County in 1910, back here in 1920 and then back in Hague, Warren
County NY where he was born by 1921 and be there in the 1930. Dutch family. His
line is Charles > Adam > Aaron > John A. > Arent
V. > Victor J. > Jan Putman.
FLORENCE PUTNAM Addison County
She
is 14 VT Mar 1886 and lives with her (step) father Daniel H. Bennett. This
looks like a dual listing for the Florence just above.
MARY S. PUTNAM Addison County
She
is 67 VT Sep 1832. She lives with her brother in law Rowland Robinson. She is
Mary Jane Stevens, the widow now of Horace Abraham Putnam. They have been in
Montpelier, but Mary Jane was born up here in Addison County.

THELBERT PUTNAM Bennington, Bennington County
He is
29 NY Feb 1871, Elsie Hill 19 VT Aug 1880. They live with her father Levi Hill.
He and two sons will still be here in 1910 and 1920, but then there is no sign
of Elsie. In 1880 he is at home with his parents, Abraham Putnam and Mary Etta Moak in Cherry Valley, Otsego County, New York. At that
time he is listed as Ethelbert, but he uses Adelbert
or Thelbert now and again in 1910 and 1920. Abraham
was a son of William Putman and Perlina Brown. This
is a Dutch family originally from Montgomery County, New York. Near as I can
figure, he is about the only non New England Putnam guy in this state.
WARREN E. (EDWARD) PUTNAM Bennington, Bennington County
He is
43 CND May 6, 1857, Anna Hawks 33 NY Aug 1866. Her mother Annie S. (Sherwood)

whole maternal side family tree here for Anna. Warren is number 2548. He is a
son of Thomas Putnam (1144) and his second wife Nancy Harris. He was born in
Putnam, Ontario. His father was born in Canada, as his grandfather Seth Putnam

Francis Osmond Putnam and Julia Weber Richardson from Warren County, NY. He was
home there in 1880, and will be in Saratoga County, NY in 1920.
MIRANDA L. PUTNAM Bennington County
She
is 66 NY Apr 1834, and enumerated with Thadeus
Brownell as a servant. Guess she is the widow of Henry Putnam from Warsaw, New
York. They were in Winnebago County Illinois in 1860 and she was back in
Rensselaer County New York in 1870 and 1880.
EBEN (EBENEZER) PUTNAM Burlington, Chittenden County

31 MA Oct 10 1868, Florence M. Tucker, his wife, is 26 MA Nov 1873, Eben Fiske Appleton 9 MA Apr 1891 and Frederick Lawrence 4
MA Oct 1895. Now this is an exciting find! All through these reports on the New
England bunch, I refer to the numbering system of Eben
Putnam. Well, this is the guy. He’s up here working for a publisher, but will
return shortly to Salem, Mass. His first book on the Putnam Family History will
be published in 1907. He and Florence will be in Wellesley, Massachusetts in

they are in Oxford, Massachusetts and they say they are both on their second
marriage. Based on that they were married here in Vermont in 1895. Elinor was married earlier herself, as she has two of her
children with her. Beatrice Platka 14 VT Nov 1885 and
Hazel Platka 12 VT Jan 1887. In 1870, he was listed
with his mother Juliette. He is a son of Haman Putnam and Juliette Chapin of
Westford. According to an entry in the IGI, he was born in Underhill,
Chittenden County. In 1910 they are in Oxford, Mass. and in 1920, he, Eleanor
and Grace will be in Worcester, Mass. Haven will be nearby in Gardner, Mass. by
1910.

publishing company. Henry is here still in 1910 so I guess his folks have died
or something. He will be married in Spokane Washington in 1930.

He is
now 57 VT Oct 1842, Laura C. (Celinda) 50 VT Dec
