CENSUS RECORDS
1790 - 1900
UPDATED JANUARY 31, 2010
The early census records of
In the 1790 census, tax records were used to reconstruct this census, which was destroyed by fire.
In the 1800 and 1810 census both males and females are broken into 0-9, 10- 15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over. 1800 was again a reconstructed census.
In the 1820 census males are broken down 0-9, 10-15, 16-18, 19-25, 26-44, 45 and older. Females are divided 0-9, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.
In the 1830 and 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.
From 1850 on ages and states of birth are shown. In 1880 and on, places of birth are listed for the person, their father and their mother.

Another of Zach and Margaret's kids is also found in 1787
but for some reason is not listed in 1790 even though he was probably still in
the area, I think. He moved to Mason County, Kentucky about 1793, though it may
have been a little earlier. They are there for sure by 1798 when they are on
the tax rolls. He was born here about 1747, and married Elizabeth Kendrick in
the early 1770s. He served with his brother Daniel in the Virginia Militia
during the Revolution. Henry will remain in

He is a son of the above Peter and Mary. His wife is Sophia. He is in the 1787 tax list but is included with his folks in 1790, as that census was based on the 1785 tax list. They will remain here, and in 1820 Sophia will be shown as a widow with her kids.

Taken from the 1800 tax list, he is listed as 1 tithable and owns 3 horses. He is Joseph Darnell Putnam, the only son of William Putnam II and Catherine Darnell. His dad died in the Revolution in Virginia about 1777, his mom remarried to John McNeil about 1780. Joseph was born about 1761, he married Sarah Ball here about 1791 or so. They will be here through the 1850 census where he is 88 and she is 81. This line is Southern and the only one to consistently use the original Putnam spelling. The lineage is Joseph > William > William > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas Putnam.
In the 1800 and 1810 census both males and females are broken into 0-9, 10- 15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.

William's widow, Pency Gill, is in her 40s with 8 kids. Now William and Pency only had 6 children, so the older girl and one of the older guys are a married couple. Their eldest, Joseph William Putman had just married Susan Marshall in 1839, so these must be them. She is widowed here still in 1850.

Sarah Griffith is the widow of John Putman, son of Fuller
and Sarah from
ELI PUTMAN Alleghany County
He is listed as 28 VA and his wife Nancy Griffith, another daughter of Orlando and Lucy Griffith, is 24 VA. Something wrong here as Eli was born in the 1822-1823 time period and should be about 38 and Nancy or Nannie about the same. To make things more confusing, there is also an Eli still shown in Fuller's family roughly the same age. Anyway, Eli and Nancy have Orlando J. 5 VA and John W. 3 VA. Elias Putnam is a son of Fuller and Sarah Putnam from Bath County. They both will die or disappear by 1870.
MARTHA PUTMAN Alleghany County
She is John and Mary’s daughter age 50 VA. She is living with the family of Thomas Ross (Sr.) who had married her sister Eunice. They were all in Bath County in 1850. Eunice is not in the 1860 census and must have died. Martha will be with the Rosses through 1880. She never married.
FULLER PUTMAN District 8, Bath County

The ages are way off from the 1850 plus 10 years. Peggy, shown as Margaret in 1870, never appeared in 1850. Possibly Albert married Peggy. At any rate, we never again hear of Albert Franklin. Eli for some reason has two listings, as he seems to be the one included here. Fuller and Sarah will have died by 1870. New England line.
JOSEPH PUTMAN Brandywine, Fauquier County
He is now 63 VA and a widower for the second time. At home are Lucy Ann 42 VA, Kitty 26 VA, Noah R. 25 VA (35), Mary Elizabeth 20 VA and Richard 14 VA. Mary died in the early 1840s. He had a new wife Nancy in 1850. Joseph will die sometime in the late 1870s. His will was probated March 24, 1879.

NOAH R. PUTMAN Orlean, Fauquier
County
Another of Joseph Putnam and Mary Gill's sons. He is a miller age 32 VA and unmarried. This was taken in August. He is also listed at home in a census taken there in July. Age should be 35 in both cases.
SALLY PUTMAN Salem, Fauquier County

ELIZABETH
PUTMAN Warrenton, Fauquier County
She is Elizabeth Gill, the widow of Martin S. Putman who died in 1845. Elizabeth is 38 VA, a seamstress, Martha Ann 18 VA, Rodney 15 VA, Silas W. 12 VA (really 17-18), Elizabeth 8 VA, Marianna 2 VA. Also with her is her widowed dad, James Gill, age 66 VA. Now, as to the two younger kids. Martin died back in the 1845, and Elizabeth was widowed here in 1850. Rumor and court cases have it that she had an affair with a neighbor, John A. Jackson, and had all the children except Martha with him.
SARAH & MARY
PUTMAN Warrenton, Fauquier County
Sarah 17 VA and Mary 15 VA are two more of Bartemous Putman's orphaned kids who died here in 1859. Sarah is living with D. E. and M. J. Maholm family, Mary with William and Lucretia Wooden. Not certain of the connections here, probably good friends.

PUTNAMS & PUTMANS Gilmer County
These are all part of the family of John Putnam and Sophia Creel originally from Fauquier County. Gilmer County will become part of the State of West Virginia when it is formed in 1863. From 1870 on see the West Virginia Censuses to keep track of these folks. They were all farmers. This is a part of the Southern Putman Line.
JOHN PUTNAM Cox’s mills, Gilmer County
He is 58 VA, and his wife Sophia Creel 50 VA. At home are Maryann 32 VA, Pency 21 VA, Sarah 28 VA, Sophia A.19 VA, Joseph B. 17 VA, John 14 VA, and Amanda F. 10 VA. John Putman was born in Fauquier County on April 26, 1802. He married Sophia Creel in Fauquier County on December 4, 1826. Sophia was a daughter of Harrison Creel and Elizabeth Lear. Sophia was born in Fauquier County on November 2, 1807. It was this family that traveled into Gilmer County in the mid 1840s with the exception of the eldest child, Levi, who remained in the area and took over the original family farm. John died in Gilmer County on December 12, 1862 and Sophia died there on March 3, 1865. It was by then West Virginia. The northern Virginia Colonies had refused to join the Confederate States of America, and West Virginia became a state. This is most likely why they moved this way in the first place. They are both buried in Baldwin, West Virginia.
JAMES PUTMAN Cox’s Mills, Gilmer County
John and Sophie's son is 31 VA, Lydia E. Cox is 32 VA and they have John Joseph 4 VA and Albert J. 1 VA. He was born in 1830. He was married three times. He first married Louvinia Stull on December 11, 1854. They had one son, John Joseph Putman, according to another researcher. He then married Lydia Ellen Cox on February 11, 1858. They had Albert Jonathan Putman. He then married Sarah Catherine Dully in Gilmer County on January 4, 1879. In 1880 they had John Monroe Putman age 1. She was 27 and he 49 when they were married. James served in the CSA during the Civil War. He died in 1909 in Braxton County, West Virginia. In 1920, Sarah then 68 is living with her son John Monroe Putman.
JEREMIAH

JONATHAN
PUTMAN Cox’s Mills, Gilmer County
He is 1 month old enumerated with John and Florence Wattensworth and four miscellaneous other children. He is the newly born son of James and Lydia. No idea why he is here, perhaps this is a hospital of sorts.
SAMUEL PUTMAN Glenville, Gilmer County
More of John's family. He is 22 VA, and his wife Mariah E. Ratcliffe is 17 born in Lewis Co. VA. With them is a Nancy Woods 5 months old. I have no idea how Nancy fits in here. He was born September 27, 1836. He married Mariah Elizabeth Ratliff on February 2, 1860. She was born in December 1841 in Pocahontas County, Virginia. She was a daughter of William Ratliff and Lucretia Wallace. Samuel died in Gilmer County on January 11, 1869. Mariah and the kids were in Pike County, Missouri in the 1880 census. Mariah died in Pike County on November 3, 1910. She is buried in New Harmony, Pike County.
GEORGE PUTNAM Clarksville, Mecklenburg County
He is George William Putman from New York, a railroad conductor. He is 42 NY, Helen Maars Burch, his wife, 29 NY, Bannister (George Bannister) 4 NY, Sarah Frances 2 CAN-West (born in Easton Corners, Ontario). His brother Ellis (Marcellus) 32 NY is there as well. George and Ellis are sons of Peter Putman Junior and Margaret Saunders from Livingston County, New York. They were all there in 1850. They will all return soon to New York. George will die and his brother Ellis will marry Helen and be in Springwater, Livingston County, New York in 1870 through 1900 with these kids. Helen is widowed there in 1910. This is a Dutch family, the line goes George > Peter > Peter > Victor > David > Johannes Poutman.

Charles will then marry Rebecca Millborn here on November 7, 1865 right after the Civil War. He is a son of William and Pency Putnam from here. The daughter Pency will be over the border in Jefferson County West Virginia in 1870 and then marry George Collins January 8, 1874.

This is Smith R. Putman 36 VA and Mary Louisa Andrews 37 VA. They have Bettie 7 VA and William H. 6 VA. He is a son of William and Pency Putnam, and was home with his mom in 1860. He married Mary here in 1861. They are here forever. He will die here July 10, 1885. This is part of the Southern Putman Family in Fauquier County up until the 1830s.

Mary 17 VA, William 15 VA, Alice 11 VA and Thomas 8 VA are at home with her. They are all in Shenandoah County in 1870. This is part of the Southern Putman Family in Fauquier County up until the 1830s.
WILLIAM PUTMAN Waterlick, Warren
County
He is a son of Charles Henry Putman, and is also listed in that family as you will see in the next listing. In this listing he is listed with Nancy Steed and her kids. One of the children is Ruth Ann Steed and William will be marrying her in 1863. Both William and Ruth Ann are shown in this report as being 17 VA. This is part of the Southern Putman Family in Fauquier County up until the 1830s.
VIRGINIA 1870
CENSUS
SARAH PUTNAM Clifton, Alleghany County
John's widow is still here at age 43 VA now. Eli (William Eli) is 22 VA, Charles F. 20 VA, Joseph 18 VA, Elizabeth R. 15 VA. Also still there is her sister in law Nancy Putman now age 65 VA. Then there is a John Putman age 14 VA who I think is a son of Eli who has died.
NANCY PUTNAM Williamsville, Bath County
This listing is some confusion. First we get three unmarried sisters, all daughters of Fuller and Sarah. Nancy is 57 VA, Rachel is 50 VA and Betsy (Elizabeth) is 47 VA. Margaret is 24 VA. Then in the next house, or at least family unit, we get Elizabeth's son (out of wedlock) Charles Francisco Putman age 20 VA and his brand new wife Agnes K. Rowe age 23 VA. There is also Alexander Putman age 21 VA who is the second of Betsy's two sons. Margaret Ross Putnam is the wife of Samuel Putnam, Fuller’s son. She will be single with four kids in Doddridge County, West Virginia in 1880. Then there is Emma Putman listed as being 4 years old born in West Virginia who is Sam and Margaret’s daughter. Fuller's family was a form of hippie commune back in those days, a large and confusing extended family of sorts. But heck, that family was from Sutton, Massachusetts where all the Putnams intermarried and intermarried.
MARTHA PUTMAN Millboro, Bath
County
She is still living with Thomas Ross Junior and his wife Mary Putnam Ross and family and is now 60 years old. She is John and Mary Putnam’s daughter who never married.
ORLANDO J. (JORDAN)
PUTMAN Millboro,
Bath County
Eli's son is now also living with the Thomas and Mary Ross brood. His folks died a few years ago. He is now 17 years old. He will be marrying Mary Ann Ross, who is here and a daughter of Thomas Ross and Mary Putnam, here on December 3, 1874. A tad more ‘incest’ of sorts. First Cousins. Also to add more spice, Thomas Ross’s mother was Eunice Putnam who was a daughter of John and Mary Putnam from Bath County.
MARSH PUTNAM Manchester, Chesterfield County
He is 21 PA. He is a brakeman on the railroad and is boarding with a bunch of others. In the 1850 there was a Marshall P. Mann age 11 in Chester County Pennsylvania. I’ll bet this is who this guy is. He isn’t a Putnam or Putman as far as I can figure.
DRUIT PUTNAM Fort Monroe, Elizabeth City County
He is a soldier 30 NY. Name is probably De Witt, fairly common name for New York folks.
VIOLA PUTNAM Providence, Fairfax County
She is 23 NY and has a son Augustus C. Putnam 4 VA with her. She is with her parents M. A. and M. A. Commins also from New York. She and her folks were here in Fairfax County in 1860 as well. She was 13 NY and single of course then. She married John Wesley Putnam from Livingston County, New York in the 1864-65 range. He may have been here in the Union Army as that was the time the Civil War was over.
