WEST
VIRGINIA
CENSUS
RECORDS
1870 -
1930
West
Virginia was a part of Northwestern Virginia until the Civil War. These people
just couldn’t support the Confederacy. The area split off when the War started
and it became a state in 1863. Therefore the early census records were included
in Virginia through the 1860 return. From 1870 on, West Virginia had its own
census listings.
The
Putnams and Putmans here are basically from two Virginia families. The New
England family of John Jeptha Putnam from Bath County, and the Southern Putman
families from Fauquier and Warren Counties Virginia. If you go to the Southern
Putman Section, then to the Virginia Section, you can get much more information
on these families. Later on a few Southern families came up from the Carolinas
and several New England families came over from Ohio and some from
Pennsylvania.

WEST
VIRGINIA 1870 CENSUS
JAMES PUTNAM Clay, Braxton County
He is
widowed or divorced and living by himself at age 41 VA. His son Jonathan is
living in the same area. He was married to Lydia Ellen Cox (his second wife) in
1860 in Gilmer County. She might be the Ellen Putnam in Wood County at this
time. Not certain at all. Anyway, James is a son of John Putnam and Sophia
Creel from Fauquier County Virginia. He was born in 1830. He was married three
times. He first married Louvinia Stull on December 11, 1854. They had one son,
John Joseph Putman, according to another researcher. He then married Lydia
Ellen Cox on February 11, 1858. They had Jonathan Putman. He then married Sarah
Catherine Dully in Gilmer County on January 4, 1879. In 1880 they had John

in the CSA during the Civil War. He died in 1909 in Braxton County, West
Virginia.
JONATHAN PUTNAM Clay, Braxton County
He is
a son of the above James and his first wife Lovinia Stull. He is 10 VA and
living with Martin and Nancy Nicholson, both in their 60s from VA. I have no
idea who they are or what connection there is. They live 8 families away from
where his dad is living. Jonathan Arnold Putnam was born in April 1860. He is
in Braxton County near his widowed father in 1870. In 1880 he is 20 and has a
new wife Anna S. Messenger. They were married in Gilmer County May 18, 1880.
Anna was born September 2, 1865 and died in Gilmer County June 11, 1895. In
1900 through 1920 he is in Gilmer County with a wife named Frances Ann Carson.
They were married in Gilmer County October 20, 1895. They are in Springfield,
Ohio in 1930.
JOHN M. PUTNAM Troy, Gilmer County
He is
a son of John Putnam and Sophia Creel from Fauquier County Virginia. His folks
had both died in the 1860's and he heads up a household of himself, age 22 VA
and his sisters: Sarah age 38 VA, Pensa (Pency) 31 VA and Amanda F. 18 VA. John
was born September 17, 1845. He will marry Sarah M. Messenger on October 3,
1872. He died July 13, 1932. Sarah was born in Gilmer County on January 10,
1854 and died September 13, 1940. They are in Webster County, West Virginia in
1880, and back here in Gilmer County in 1900 through 1930. Then the sisters.
Sarah was born October 4 1832. She never married. She is living with her
brother John Putman, also in 1900 through 1920. She died, unmarried, on
November 17, 1920 in Webster County, West Virginia. Somerville Pencetha ‘Pency’

in Gilmer County. Amanda was born April 12, 1850. She will marry Carlton
Fitzpatrick here on April 6, 1876.

husband Samuel E. Putnam had died in 1869. She is living next door to the above

Sophia Creel from Fauquier County Virginia. She is Maria Elizabeth Ratliff 26
VA, and her children are John W. 9 VA, Martha L. 7 WV, Lafayette 4 WV and

Loveless from Warren County. She will marry George Collins or Collis here
January 8, 1874.
GEORGE PUTNAM Parkersburg, Wood County
He is
currently in the local jail. He is 28 years old, unknown birthplace. He will be
out of jail in 1880, but still in the county. In 1880 he lists his birthplace
as Ohio. He would be from those shifty New Englanders. He is a son of Lewis
John Pope Putnam of Marrietta, Ohio. George was born in Millersport, Ohio on
October 13, 1839. He married Elvira Flanders in 1869, and she died in 1873. He

is also in Parkersburg and might be George's first wife Elvira Flanders, who
was supposed to have died in 1878. She is most likely Ellen Cox, ex wife of
James Putnam who is currently in Braxton County. Anyway she is 25 VA, A. J. a
son is 5 WV and Maggie 3 WV.

MARGARET A. PUTMAN New Milton, Doddridge County

is probably the widow of Samuel Putnam from Bath County, Virginia. She is
listed 33 VA with a daughter Emma 14 and a son William (William Henry) 4. She
is living with her mother and her stepfather, Patoris and Adda B. Hollis
(listed as Holland in 1900). Her maiden name seems to be Ross, as a George Ross
is living here too and is listed as her brother. This is all based on the
marriage license of William, the son, who states his folks were Samuel and Margaret
Putman. This is next to Ritchie County where other Putnams from Bath County are
now. In 1900, there is a James Putnam born in 1882 living here with Adda and is
