CENSUS REPORTS

1830 - 1900

After the War of 1812, many folks, including some of our Putmans, came down from Tennessee and the Carolinas into Northern and Western Alabama. The area became a Territory in 1817 and by 1819 it became the 22nd State. The first Federal Census was 1830.

 

In the 1830 and 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.

 

From 1850 on ages and states of birth are shown. In 1880 and onward, places of birth are listed for the person, their father and their mother. After 1900 it gives either when they were married or how long they were married.

 

 

ALABAMA 1830 CENSUS

 

In the 1830 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.

 

JOHN PUTMAN  Morgan County

John is listed 1101101 and 2021101. He is between 40 and 50, which ties in with his birth date of about 1785. He is the son of Benjamin Putman and Elizabeth Griggs of Rutherford County North Carolina. His wife, Lucy Covington, is in the same age bracket. Based on the 1850 census when they are in adjacent Lawrence County he would have been 45 years old in 1830 and Lucy would have been 42. They were in Rutherford County North Carolina in 1810, and probably here in 1820 but there was no census for Alabama then. They have four sons and six daughters still at home, the oldest son and daughter are in their early 20s, the others all under 19.

 

GRIGGS PUTMAN  Morgan County

Griggs shows 10210001 and 131011. Griggs is the above John's older brother. Griggs is over 50 and this ties in with his late 1770s birth. His wife Sarah (Sally) is younger being born about 1790. They have four sons and six daughters at home. He lives next to John Putman on one side and his son Francis lives on the other side.

 

FRANCIS PUTMAN  Morgan County

Francis lists his family as 0100101 and 2000101. He is in his early 40s as is his wife, Sady Couch. They were married here January 14, 1823. He is the eldest son of Griggs Putman and was born in Rutherford County North Carolina. There is an older couple living with them, they might be her folks, but not sure. They are in Lawrence County by the 1840 census.

 

MITCHELL PUTMAN  St. Clair County

Although I do not have a census listing, I know Mitchell Putman and his family were here for several years before heading off to Texas in 1833. He is with his second wife, Rebecca Hall. His first wife Sarah Elizabeth Dollar has died. They will be in Benton County Alabama in 1832 and then a year later headed west. Mitchell and Reuben, below, were two sons of William Putman and Mary Mitchell. They were in Laurens County South Carolina prior to coming southwest into Alabama.

 

REUBEN PUTMAN  St. Clair County

Same story as with his brother Mitchell. He and his wife Mary Putman, a cousin, were in St. Clair County in the early to mid 1830s and in 1837 moved to Texas to join his brother. Mary was a daughter of William Putman and Dulcybella Watkins of Abbeville and then Laurens County South Carolina. Reuben was born in 1796 and Mary in 1805.

 

 

ALABAMA 1840 CENSUS

 

In the 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.

 

JEREMIAH PUTMAN  Dallas County

 He is probably the Jeremiah who married Susannah Dean in North Carolina in 1823, except she is shown back in Guilford County North Carolina and widowed. This may be him with a new wife and her kids. The listing is 000101 0111001. The folks are in their forties now with kids ranging into their mid teens. Dallas County in way down in the lower middle of the State, and not near where any other Putmans live. In 1850, there is a widow, Louisa Putman, in neighboring Bibb County who might be his wife. Just don’t know, but Louisa is from North Carolina. Best I can figure on the Jeremiah Putnam in Virginia and then North Carolina is that he was a ‘late arrival’ and not connected to the Southern Putman family.

 

REBECCA PUTMAN  Jackson County

Rebecca Morris is listed as 00101 and 10011101, and is the widow of Wilson Putman Senior who died in Rhea County Tennessee in the late 1820s. Rebecca was widowed there in the 1930 She came with her two eldest sons Morris and young Wilson. The two sons with her here are Jesse and John. Her husband Wilson was a son of Benjamin Putman and Elizabeth Griggs from Rutherford County North Carolina. He was born in the mid 1770s and married Rebecca in the late 1790s.

 

MORRIS PUTMAN  Jackson County

He is listed as Moses, 221001 and 011001. He is a son of Wilson and Rebecca. His wife is Nancy. They are both in their 30s. He was born in Rutherford County North Carolina in 1805 and will die here in Jackson County in 1848. They, like his folks, were in Rhea County Tennessee before this. Nancy is widowed here in the 1850 and back over the border in Tennessee in 1960.

 

WILSON PUTMAN (JR.)  Jackson County

Young Wilson's family is listed 11001 and 21001. He is, of course, a son of Wilson Putman and Rebecca Morris. He was born in Rutherford County North Carolina in 1812.His wife is Rebecca Flemming and they were married in Rhea County Tennessee October 20, 1830. He fought in the Seminole War in Florida from October 26, 1837 through April 12, 1838. They are in Madison County in 1850 and then back here in Jackson County by 1860.

 

FRANK PUTMAN  Lawrence County

This is Francis Putman. He and his wife Sady Caroline Couch now have a son and six daughters. The family is now shown as 000101 312001. He is the eldest son of Griggs and Sally Putman. He was born back in North Carolina in 1805, and married Sady here in 1823-24. Francis will die here July 3, 1850, and Sady is widowed in the 1850 census and with her married daughter Nancy Stout in Franklin County in 1860. She then will move to Tennessee where she will die on September 28, 1873.

 

SARAH PUTMAN  Lawrence County

Sally is the widow of Griggs Putman. She still has a bunch of kids at home. 011 0012001. Griggs was a son of Benjamin Putman and Elizabeth Griggs from Rutherford County North Carolina. They came here around 1815 or so. They were all here in 1830 and Griggs has died in the past decade.

 

WINFIELD PUTMAN  Lawrence County

This might be Winifred, the widow of William Putman who came down from Rhea County with Griggs. Only a guess, but it makes sense. She was there in 1830 and not in Tennessee in 1840. But the oldest listing is in the male category, so it might indeed be a Winfield Putman who might be a son of William and Winnie. Not certain at all. I never find a Winfield either before or after. William did indeed exist back in North Carolina, but once he left with the other brothers, I just have never been able to pin down this family at all. The family is shown as 00001 1002. The fact that the eldest listed is a male would make the listing of Winfield make sense, but who is he? I really wish the handwriting was better. He does live right next door to Sarah Putman

 

WILLIAM PUTMAN  Lawrence County

William's family is listed as 200001  12001. He married Susan Stephens in Morgan County in 1831. He is a son of Griggs and Sally Putman from here. His mother, listed Sarah, is living nearby. They are in Morgan County in 1850 and in Pontotoc County Mississippi in 1860. I don’t find him later and assume he was killed in the Civil War.

 

ALEXANDER PUTMAN  Morgan County

He is listed 01001  20001. There is a marriage record of Alexander Putman marrying Nancy Royer December 27, 1832. He must be a son of John, but I do not know for certain. On the same day Anson Putman, who definitely was a son of John Putman, married Hester Royer. So it certainly looks like a brother-sister act. So I am pretty sure he is a son of John and Lucy. I never hear of Alex again though.

 

ANSEL (ANSON) PUTMAN  Morgan County

This is Anson Putman, born back in Rutherford County North Carolina in 1814. He is living alongside his father John Putman. He is listed 11001  10001. He married Hester Royer December 27, 1832. She was born in Jefferson County Tennessee December 17, 1815. The kids so far would be James, George and Louisa. He is a Methodist Preacher. They will be in Lawrence County in 1850 and 1860. They will then go up to Maury County Tennessee where he will die March 25, 1865. Hester is widowed there in 1870. She will then take the kids and go out to Navarro County Texas by 1873. She will die there April 23, 1895.

 

JOHN PUTMAN  Morgan County

John is now pushing 60 and Lucy Covington is just over 60. They still have kids or someone at home. The family is 01110001  000111001. The guys at home would be William, John and Josiah. . He is the son of Benjamin Putman and Elizabeth Griggs of Rutherford County North Carolina. He was there in 1810 and down here before 1820.

 

MARTIN PUTMAN  Marshall County

Martin's family is 11002  11101. This makes it two males in the family in their 20s. The other guy might be a brother of he or Huldy Parker his wife. He is age 44 in the 1850 census, so it would appear reasonable that Martin be moved over one slot here in 1840 and be about 34 or so. Anyway, Martin is a son of Thomas Putman who was a son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Putman from Rutherford County North Carolina. Thomas went a little South to York County South Carolina around the late 1790s, and Martin was born there in 1806. He married Mahulda Parker in North Carolina in 1929, and they were in Rutherford County there in 1830. They came down here about 1836. He will be in Morgan County by 1850, and stay here until he dies May 19, 1882. Huldy will die of Puerperal Fever in October 1869. He was a widow in 1870, and then married Jane Basham on October 15, 1871. She died and he then married her sister, Dorcas Basham on January 15, 1880. He is a Primitive Baptist Minister and also a blacksmith by trade.

 

SIMON PUTMAN  Randolph County

This is old Simeon Putman, born about 1775 in Union County South Carolina, a son of John Putman and Sarah Howard. He had gone from South Carolina to Monroe County Kentucky in 1800 through 1820, then to Hamilton County Tennessee in the 1820s and finally to Randolph County Alabama in the 1830s. He is now pushing 70 as is Peggy Mercer his wife. They were married in Barren County Kentucky December 15, 1802. There are two daughters at home in their 20s. The rest are gone. Simeon will die here in October 1849. Peggy will die before 1850 as well.

 

MADISON PUTMAN  Randolph County

Madison Dekalb Putman is Simeon and Peggy Putman's eldest son. He is shown 111011 and 100011. It would appear that his brother and either his wife, or an older sister are living with him. Madison was born in Monroe County Kentucky on August 6, 1809. He married Catherine Olivia Davidson on March 26, 1835 in Hamilton County Tennessee. She was born January 11, 1817 in Georgia. In the mid 1830s, they moved here to Randolph County where their first four children were born, and then in 1846 moved to Williamson County Texas where the next four children were born. In about 1857 they again moved to southeast Llano County Texas. In 1861 to avoid being involved with the Confederate draft that they did not support, they moved into Comanche Indian territory in southwest Llano County where the settled on Hickory Creek, and remained there the rest of their lives. He died April 21, 1882 in Llano County Texas.

 

MONROE PUTMAN  Randolph County

This is one of Hiram's kids. 00001 10001. He is Thomas Monroe Putman and was born in 1818 in Tompkinsville, Monroe County Kentucky. He moved with his folks to Hamilton County Tennessee. In about 1838, he married Mary (Polly) Richmond and they moved to Randolph County. Mary died here in the early 1840s, probably in the childbirth of their son John in 1841. The youngest two children, Martha Lou and John were taken in by Mary's mother, Martha Richmond, and her brother, William Rogers Richmond and his wife Mahala. They were raised by the Richmonds and appear with them in the 1850 and 1860 census reports for Bradley County Tennessee. Thomas had moved to Alabama, probably to follow the Gold Rush in northern Alabama. He is in Benton County Alabama in the 1850 census with his second wife, Martha Jane Thomas. They were married about 1843 or 1844. They are in Cherokee County in 1860 and Martha is widowed there in 1870. He had died there December 16, 1872.

 

HIRAM PUTMAN  Randolph County

Hiram is Simeon's brother, born about 1780. He is a son of the Reverend John Putman and Sarah Howard. Hiram was born October 6, 1783 in Union County South Carolina. On June 25, 1806, he married Loamy Mercer. He and Simeon went to Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama together. They were in Hamilton County Tennessee in 1830. He is shown as 00022001  0011101. He still has several sons at home that appear to be Leonidas, Hiram, and Howard Mercer. The daughters would be Hester, Sarah and another one. By the 1850 census, he is in Benton County Alabama. He died in Calhoun (originally Benton) County Alabama in 1856.

 

JAMES W. PUTNAM  Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County

He in his 20s with a wife same age and a young son in Tuscaloosa City. No ideas at all here, no one like him in the State in 1850.                          

 

 

ALABAMA 1850 CENSUS

 

SIMEON H. (HOWARD) PUTMAN  Benton County (now Calhoun)

Simeon is the son of Simeon Putman and Margaret ‘Peggy’ Mercer. He may be one of Hiram's, but I don't think so. He is listed as 35 TN and his wife Sarah Caroline Teague 25 GA, but he was born in Barren County Kentucky in 1813-1814. He married Sarah Teague in Benton County Alabama November 1, 1837. The children were all born in Alabama. They were Mandy 10, William 9, John 7, Mary 5, Margaret L. 3, and James 1. They are in Talladega County in 1860 and in Cleburne County by 1880, He will die before 1900 and Sarah will be with her daughter in Lawrence County in 1900.

 

FORESTER PUTMAN  District 28, Benton County

One of Hiram and Loamy Mercer’s kids. He is 28 TN, his wife Ayrie Burch is 27 SC. Children are Margaret 11 AL, William J. 8 AL, Eliza Ann 6 AL, Josiah Taylor 4 AL and Forester M 1 AL. The ‘M’ in young Forester’s name is probably Mercer. He was born in 1822 in Tennessee. He married Ayrie Burch on February 1, 1839 in Benton County Alabama. Ayrie was born in South Carolina in 1823. Ayrie died around 1857, and Forester married Malissa J. Johnson on August 24, 1859 here in Benton County. They are here in 1860. In 1870 he is in Cleburne County and again is widowed. Only his daughter, Eliza Ann 25, is home with him. In 1870 Forrester is 59 years old. I do not find him in the 1880 census, so I assume he died in the 1870s.

 

HOWARD MERCER PUTMAN  District 28, Benton County

Another of Hiram and Loamy Putman's sons. He was born in 1816, and is now is 25 KY and his wife Sally Burch is 26 SC. Sally is Ayrie's sister. She first married Howard's brother, Silas, and when he died around she married Howard about 1857. Children are Jean 10 AL, James 8 AL, Thomas 7 AL, George 6 AL and Silas Mercer 2 AL. The kids, except Silas, were with his first wife Mary Elizabeth Varner. They are here in 1860, but it is changed to Calhoun County. In 1870 it appears that both Howard and Sally have just died as the children appear together in Cleburne County Alabama and the family is headed by the son Silas who is then 21 years old.

 

THOMAS MONROE PUTMAN  District 28, Benton County

Thomas is Hiram's also and is 32 KY and his second wife Martha Jane Thomas 20 SC. The children then were Sarah Elizabeth 4 AL and Silas Cass 1 AL. He was born in 1818 in Tompkinsville, Monroe County Kentucky. He moved with his folks to Hamilton County Tennessee. In about 1838, he married Mary (Polly) Richmond and they moved to Randolph County Alabama where they appear in the 1840 census. HIRAM PUTMAN  District 28, Benton County

He is the daddy of most of the folks here in Benton (soon to be Calhoun) County. He is a mechanic 66 SC and his wife Loamy Mercer is 51 TN.  Still at home are Leonidis 30 KY, Hiram junior 22 TN, Hester 20 TN and Sarah Ann Wheeler 27 TN. Sarah is a daughter who married Rufus Wheeler October 6, 1849. Don’t know where he is now though. He is a son of the Reverend John Putman and Sarah Howard. Hiram was born October 6, 1783 in Union County South Carolina. On June 25, 1806, he married Loamy Mercer. She was a daughter of Forester Mercer. Loamy was born April 30, 1789. Hiram went to Barren County Kentucky with his brother, Simeon, and was there in 1810. He was in the 1820 Census of Tompkinsville, Monroe County Kentucky. He then appears in Hamilton County Tennessee in the 1830 census. By the 1840 census, he is in Randolph County Alabama. He died in Calhoun (originally Benton) County Alabama in 1856. He is buried at the New Bethel Church of Christ about five miles away in Bordon Springs, Cleburne County Alabama. Loamy is widowed here in 1860 and died before 1870.

 

WILSON PUTMAN  District 28, Benton County

William Wilson Putman is 35 NC and his wife Susan Hullett is 34 NC. Wilson was born about 1815 and his wife Susan Hullett about 1816. Wilson appears in the 1840 census of Rutherford County North Carolina and sometime around 1842 moved to South Carolina and then about 1845 to Georgia and then in 1848 moved to Alabama. I feel he is a son of William and Winnie Putman. If you look back in the North Carolina section, you'll see I have a tough time placing him with any family. The kids were Charlotte 12 NC, John 8 NC, Benjamin 7 SC, Sarah 4 GA and Mary 1 AL.  I guess the moves based on the children's birthplaces. They are in Blount County in 1860, 1870 and 1880. That is the last I see of them.

 

LUCINDA PUTMAN  District 29, Benton County

Lucinda is the widow of Reuben Putman. She is 48 SC and still has John 18 SC, Sanford Vandiver 16 SC and Cynthia Ann 14 AL at home. Reuben Putman was a son of Daniel Putman and Sarah Kendrick of Abbeville County. He was born about 1775 in South Carolina. They were in the census of Abbeville and Laurens Counties, South Carolina in 1800 through 1830. I do not find the family in 1840. They arrived here around 1840 and he died here in 1847.

 

LOUISA PUTMAN  Bibb County

She is a widow 50 NC with her children Anna 18 NC, William 20 NC, Franklin 14 NC, Thomas 12 NC and Rush 8 NC. She is living with Thomas W. Gilleland 37 NC and his wife Margaret J. 25. I would guess that Margaret is a daughter of Louisa. As to who Louisa is, I haven't a clue. Later on, Elias William Putman will be marrying Margaret Gilleland in the 1850s in Cleveland County North Carolina. Louisa might well have come from Cleveland County herself. Also, see the comment in 1840 for Jeremiah Putman in nearby Dallas County.

 

JOHN C. (CALHOUN) PUTMAN  Blount County

John is a son of William Putman and Dulcybelle Watkins from Laurens County South Carolina. They were married there about 1837 and moved here about 1843. He is 41 SC and his wife Nancy is 37 SC. The kids at the time were Henry 12 SC, Reuben 10 SC, Susan 8 SC, Dulcybelle 6 AL and John W. 2 AL. They are here through the 1880, and died sometime before 1900.

 

DAVID L. PUTMAN  Cherokee County

David is a blacksmith 32 SC and his wife Emily Tobert is 29 GA. Kids are Martha Ann 7 AL, Mary E. 5 AL and Louisa A. 2 AL. This family is in DeKalb County Alabama in 1860. I do not know who David is. Blacksmithing was, of course, a big occupation in the Putman family. He married Emily Tolbert July 27, 1841. I am guessing he is a son of Ezekiel Putman and Hannah Brazelton, born in that brief period that Ezekiel returned from Kentucky to Anderson County South Carolina before heading off to Hall County Georgia. Ezekiel was there in 1817 and 1818, the same time David was born. Dave married Emily Tolbert in Marshall County Alabama on July 27, 1841.

 

JACOB PUTMAN  DeKalb County

Jacob is Ezekiel's son. He is now 40 and his wife Sarah H. Johnston is 35. Kids at home are Joseph 15 GA, Rebecca 14 GA, Charles 11 GA, Clinton E. 4 GA and Richard 1 GA. They obviously just moved to Alabama. Richard was born out of wedlock, mothered by Narcissa Patton. Jacob and Joseph and Clinton will be in Pike County Arkansas by 1860. Also there will be his son Richard who will be living with his mother Narcissa and her family. Charles will die there in 1857. Rebecca will marry Scott Forester and also be in Arkansas.

 

WILLIAM J. PUTMAN  DeKalb County

He is a farmer 33 KY, but in 1860 it states GA as his birthplace and the spelling becomes Putnam. Anyway his wife Martha A. Hampton is 29 GA and the children are Mary A. 9 GA, John Augustus 7 GA, James G. 5 GA and William J. junior 2 AL.  Two of the children, William and Martha will be in Texas in the 1880 census. John Augustus will be in Franklin County Arkansas in 1870, in Parker County Texas with his siblings in 1880 and in Sebastian County Arkansas in 1900. James will be in Greene County Missouri in 1880. I feel he is another of Ezekiel Putman's sons. He will be here again in 1860 along with David L. Putman who I believe is his brother. In 1870, Martha will still be here, but will be a widow.

 

JESSE R. PUTMAN  District 21, Jackson County

Jesse is 27 TN and living with John and Margaret Ustes. Margaret Ustes 30 TN is his sister.

He is a son of Wilson Putman Senior and Rebecca Morris. He is also listed with mom (see below). Wilson was a son of Benjamin Putman and Elizabeth Griggs from Rutherford County North Carolina.

 

NANCY PUTMAN  District 21, Jackson County

Nancy is the widow of Morris Putman. I still don’t know her last name. She is 50 NC and has these kids at home helping around: Rebecca 25 TN, William 23 TN, Martha 20 TN, Wilson 17 TN, James 14 AL, John 12 AL, Richard 12 AL, Morris 9 AL and Sarah L. 6 AL.

 

REBECCAH PUTMAN  District 21, Jackson County

Rebecca Morris is the widow of Wilson Putman Senior. She is shown as being 67 NC and has three kids at home, Elizabeth 45 NC who never married, Jesse R. 30 TN who marries Ersula Freeman in 1858 and John 25 TN who will marry Rosanna Thompson in 1852.

 

ABEL PUTMAN  Lauderdale County

Listed as Abigil, he is the eldest son of Bazel Putman living next door. He would be named after Bazel's father. He is shown as 23 SC and his wife Nancy Julia Cox as 22 AL. No kids. There is a marriage recorded in Lauderdale County for Abel and Nancy Cox on February 8, 1849. He also has a second listing as A. B. PUTMAN, this time age 21 and Nancy 20. Same guy though.

 

BASSIL PUTMAN  Rogersville, Lauderdale County

This is Bazel Putman son of Abel Putman and Milly Barnet. He is shown as 50 SC. With him is Louisa 30 SC who may be his second wife as she is to young to be his first wife as some kids are in their twenties. Also listed are Samuel 18 TN, Sarah 14 TN, Frances 13 TN, Mary 9 TN, Nelley 7 TN, Zedoc 5 AL (named after Bazel's older brother Zadock), and Nancy 3 AL.

 

SARAH PUTMAN  District 8, Lawrence County

Sally 50 TN is the widow of Griggs Putman and has been here for ages. Living at home are Ludema 26 AL, Elizabeth 20 AL and James 18 AL.

 

JOHN PUTMAN  District 8, Lawrence County

John 22 AL is living with Joseph and Cinderella Hunter next door to Sady Couch Putman who is most likely his mom. He would be a son of Francis and Sady Putman, part of Griggs family. Cinderella is a Couch, and is Sady’s sister.

 

SADY PUTMAN  District 8, Lawrence County

Sady Couch is the widow of Francis Putman who just died here July 3, 1850. She is 46 NC and has the following kids (all born in Alabama) still with her: Dracina 21, Lucinda 21, Rebecca 15, Celia 13, Margaret 10, Jeremiah 9, Sarah 8, Mary 6, Fady L. 3 and Francis M. 3. Couple of sets of twins here. She is in Franklin County in 1860.

 

WILLIAM A. PUTMAN  District 8, Lawrence County

William is the second eldest of Francis and Sady's children. Mom is listed above. He is 26 AL and a blacksmith. His wife is Eliza Couch 24 AL and they have one daughter Mary 1 AL. They were married here October 29, 1846. They are here in 1860. I do not find him in 1870. It turns out that he was asked to make rifles for the Confederate Army, and he refused. One night a mob came to his house and beat him to death.

 

ANSON PUTMAN  District 8, Lawrence County

Anson is a Methodist Clergyman and a son of John Putman, living next to him. Anson is 36 NC and his wife Hester Royer is 35 TN. They were married in Morgan County in 1832. The kids (all AL) at the time were George 15, Louisa 12, John 9, Sarah 7, Charles 5 and Malinda 3. They will all be here in 1860. The family will be in Maury County Tennessee in the 1860s, where Anson will die, and then Hester and the kids will be in Texas by 1880.

 

JOHN PUTMAN  District 8, Lawrence County

John is now 65 NC and his wife Lucy Covington 62 NC. Malinda 40 is still unwed and at home as are Anderson 28 AL and Josiah 18 AL. These two sons will head off to Arkansas in a few years after marrying Turrentine sisters in Alabama. He is a son of Benjamin and Elizabeth Putman from Granville and then Rutherford County North Carolina. They came here with his brother Griggs in around 1820. He will die here in a few years. Lucy will be with her married daughter Elizabeth Sykes in Morgan County and then will die herself in the 1860s.

 

WILSON PUTMAN  Madison County

He is a son of Wilson Putman and Rebecca Morris. He was born in Rutherford County North Carolina in 1812. His wife is Rebecca Flemming and they were married in Rhea County Tennessee October 20, 1830.Young Wilson is a blacksmith as was his dad. He is 40 TN and his wife Rebecca Flemming is 38 TN. Children are Flemming 18 AL, Carolina 16 AL, Mary 14 AL, Daniel 12 AL, Margaret 10 AL, Wilson the 3rd 8 AL, Martin 4 AL and Rebecca 1 AL. They were in Jackson County in 1840. They are back in Jackson County by the 1850.

 

MARTIN PUTMAN  Somerville, Morgan County

Martin, a Baptist clergyman, is now 44 SC and his wife Huldy (Mahulda Parker) 44 SC. The kids are Nancy 20 NC, Frances 18 NC, James 16 NC, Thomas 13 AL, Sarah S. 11 AL, Susan 9 AL, Joseph 7 AL, William 5 AL, John 3 AL and Martin Marion 5 months old AL. They got here in the mid 1830s from North Carolina and will be here for the rest of their lives. He is a son of Thomas and Hannah Putman from Rutherford County North Carolina and briefly in York County South Carolina where Martin was born in 1806. He will be here till he dies.

 

WILLIAM PUTMAN  Division 10, Morgan County

He was in Lawrence County in 1840 and I guessed he was one of Grigg's sons. Anyway he is now 40 NC and his wife Susan Stephens is 39 NC. The children were all born in Alabama. They were Nancy 18, Mary E. 16, Jane 14, William M. 13, John 10, James 9, Henderson 7, Eliza 5 and Francis M. 3. The family will be in Pontotoc County Mississippi by 1860. The son James will be in Arkansas by 1870.

 

NANCY PUTMAN Morgan County

Nancy 24 AL is living with James and Rebecca Burleson. Rebecca is her sister. She is a daughter of John Putman and Lucy Covington.

 

SIMEON PUTMAN  Randolph County

He is a farmer 33 TN and his wife Milly (Emily Howle) 25 SC. Children then were Martha L. 4 AL and Silas M. 4 months AL. Three more kids will pop up in the 1850s. Simeon is a son of Hiram Putman and Loamy Mercer originally from South Carolina. Sim was born December 16, 1815 in Barren County Kentucky. He married E. Milly or Emily Howle in about 1846 in Randolph County Alabama. Milly was a daughter of Alexander Howle and Martha Morgan from Edgefield County South Carolina. Milly was born March 11, 1824. Simeon died in Jefferson County Alabama on September 19, 1860. The farm was sold, but paid for in Confederate money, so the family essentially went bankrupt. Milly is still listed through the 1900 Census. In 1900, she is 74 years old, and died in about 1905 at almost 80 years of age.

 

JAMES PATMAN  Randolph County

This is a Patman family not Putman from Oglethorpe County Georgia. He is 26 GA, Molly 25 GA, Elizabeth 10 GA, Ann 8 GA, William 6 GA, Martha 4 GA, Jane 1 GA. I’m listing them as I once thought they were Putmans.

 

UPSTON PATMAN  Randolph County

He is probably James' brother. He is 25 GA, Gilly Croft 24 GA, Mary 8 GA, Jane 6 GA, Nancy D. 2 GA and James M GA. 1. Again he is probably a Patman not Putman. If he is a Putman he would be a son of Simeon Putman and Peggy Mercer, but if that were the case he would have been born in Kentucky.

 

JOEL PUTMAN  St. Clair County

Joel is now 28 SC, a son of Reuben Putman. His wife Narcissa Coker is 23 AL and they have one son, Francis A. 1 AL. Narcissa's mom, Nancy Coker 50 TN lives next door. Joel was a son of Reuben and Lucinda Putman. He was born in Kershaw, Laurens County South Carolina on August 30, 1821. He married Narcissa Coker on March 8, 1848 in St. Clair County Alabama. Narcissa was born in Alabama in 1827. Narcissa died in the early 1860s and Joel then married Malinda Ann Sanson in St. Clair County on March 6, 1864. Malinda was born in Georgia on November 15, 1839. Joel died in St. Clair County on April 26, 1891 and Malinda died on February 27, 1913 in Caddo County Oklahoma while visiting her son Claude. Her body was returned to St. Clair County for burial.

WILSON PUTMAN  Blount County

3 1 3 1 0. William Wilson Putman was a son of William and Winnie Putman (I believe) from North Carolina. They were in Benton County in 1850 after moving from Rutherford County, North Carolina in the mid 1840s. They are here in 1860.

 

LIDY PUTMAN  Franklin County

1 0 8 3 0. This would be Fady Couch widow of Francis Putman who died in Lawrence County July 3, 1850. He was Grigg’s son born back in North Carolina. They were in Lawrence County up till 1850 and Sady is here in 1860.

JOHN C. (CALHOUN) PUTMAN  Western Division, Blount County

John is still in Blount County but seems to be having a rough go of things. He now lists himself as a day laborer and his two eldest sons are working on neighbors' farms. Anyway, he is shown as 51 SC and his wife Nancy is 49 SC. Susan 17 SC, Dulsey 16 GA, John W. 14 GA, James E. 12 GA, George 7 GA and Sarah Ann 3 AL are at home.

 

REUBEN & HENRY PUTMAN  Western Division, Blount County

These are the two oldest of John Putman's children. Reuben Ira 16 TN is living and working with John Roads (Rhodes) 78 NC and his brother Henry 20 TN is next door with John's son Pleasant Roads. The Rhodes are friends of the Putmans going back 200 years in Virginia. Reuben Ira was born February 17, 1844 in the Laurens District of South Carolina. He married Mary Lou Kelly from Georgia on April 20, 1865. They were in Blount County through the 1900 census, and he died September 7, 1908. Henry was born in 1839 in Laurens District and I don’t find him in 1870. He was most likely killed in the Civil War like so many other Putmans.

 

WILSON PUTMAN  Eastern Division, Blount County

William Wilson Putman was a son of William and Winnie Putman (I believe) from North Carolina. They were in Benton County in 1850 after moving from Rutherford County North Carolina in the mid 1840s. He is now 45 and Susan Hullett his wife 42. Their daughter Charlotte has married William Cornelius in 1856 and she is now gone. The kids at home are John J. now 18 NC, Benjamin 15 SC, Sarah 13 GA, Mary 10 AL, George 5 AL and Andrew 3 AL. They are here through the 1880, and will die before 1900.

 

UPSTON PATMAN  Ranges 8 & 9, Calhoun County

He was in Randolph County in 1850. He may be a Patman, not Putman. But I am listing him just in case. If he is a Putman he would be a son of Simeon Putman and Peggy Mercer, but if that were the case he would have been born in Kentucky.  He is now 36 SC, his wife Gillian Croft 34 SC and their children are Mary E. 15 GA, N.D. (Nancy) 12 AL, James M. 10 AL, Samuel 7 AL, John W. 5 AL and a son S.C. 3 months.

 

FOSTER (FORESTER) PUTMAN  Ranges 8 & 9, Calhoun County

Forester is listed as 55 KY but it should be 38 KY. His wife, Ayrie Burch has died. He has Eliza Ann 15, John T. (Josiah) 13, Simeon 10, John L. 6, Foster M. 4 (should be about 11 as he was 1 in 1850). I do not know when Ayrie died, but Forester married Malissa Johnson on August 24, 1859. I have no idea why she is not in the census. Also living with him is his oldest daughter Margaret 20 who appears to be widowed or separated from her husband as her name is now Margaret Miller and she has a daughter Aria Miller 2. She married James L. Miller on December 28, 1856.

 

JOHN W. PUTMAN  Ranges 5-6-7, Calhoun County

John is 28 SC and his wife Angelina (Angie Francis Walker) 26 SC. They were married April 13, 1852. The children at this time were Mary A. 8, Martha J. 6, Sanford S. 4, Joel (John Reuben) 1. Also living with them was Angie's daddy, John Walker 60 SC. John is a son of Reuben and Lucinda Putman. John was born in Laurens County South Carolina September 4, 1831. In St. Clair County Alabama, he married Angie Frances Walker on April 13, 1852. Angie was born in South Carolina on August 15, 1831 and was a daughter of John and Mary Walker. He served in the Alabama Infantry in the Civil War and was wounded in the right leg in the battle of Jonesboro, Georgia in 1864. They remained in Benton, and were there as it changed name to Calhoun County. Angie died there September 12, 1888 and John died there November 29, 1907. Both are buried at Ten Island Cemetery in Ohatchee, Alabama.

 

SANFORD PUTMAN  Ranges 5-6-7, Calhoun County

Sandford Vandiver Putman to be exact is 26 SC and his wife Nancy Wildman was 25 AL. They were married in Calhoun County on December 12, 1854. They have three children Mary Ann 4, Elizabeth 2 and Tempe a 3 month old daughter. Sanford is the above John's brother, and a son of Reuben and Lucinda Putman. John was born in Laurens County South Carolina in 1834. In 1866 and 1870, Nancy is a widow. I assume Sanford was killed in the Civil War. She is still in Calhoun County in 1880 but I do not find her again after that.

 

MARY PUTMAN  Ranges 5-6-7, Calhoun County

Mary is 6 and shown as being born in AL. She is living with Daniel Castleberry age 60 SC. I assume Dan is a brother or at least kinfolk of Lecy/Lucy Castleberry. Lecy is the wife of David Putman of Cherokee County Georgia. But I have no clue how Mary fits in.

 

HOWARD M. (MERCER) PUTMAN  Range 13, Calhoun County

He is now 45 KY, Sarah Burch his wife 38 SC, and these kids all born in Alabama: James 18 AL, Thomas 17 AL, George 16 AL, Silas Mercer 11 AL, Texas 10 AL, Simeon 8 AL, Harvey 5 AL, John 3 AL and Hawkins 1 AL. Howard Mercer Putman was born in Monroe County Kentucky in 1826. He is a son of Hiram and Loamy Mercer Putman. He married Sally Burch, who was the widow of his brother Silas Putman. Sally was a daughter of Reuben Burch and Sarah Pinson. They were both widowed with a couple of kids. Howard and Sally both die here in the later 1860s. The kids are all in Cleburne County on 1870.

 

THOMAS M. (MONROE) PUTMAN  District 1, Cherokee County

This is Thomas Monroe who was in Benton (Calhoun) County in 1850. He is now 42 KY and his second wife Martha Jane Thomas is 32 SC. They now have Sarah 15 AL, Silas 12 AL, James 10 AL, Isaac Thomas 4 AL and Hattie 1AL. He is a son of Hiram Putman and Loamy Mercer. He was born in 1818 in Tompkinsville, Monroe County Kentucky. He moved with his folks to Hamilton County Tennessee. In about 1838, he married Mary (Polly) Richmond and they moved to Randolph County Alabama where they appear in the 1840 census. Mary died in the early 1840s, probably in the childbirth of their son John in 1841. The youngest two children, Martha Lou and John were taken in by Mary's mother, Martha Richmond, and her brother, William Rogers Richmond and his wife Mahala. They were raised by the Richmonds and appear with them in the 1850 and 1860 census reports for Bradley County Tennessee. He married Martha about 1845. They are in Cherokee County in 1870 and he will die there December 16, 1872. Martha will be widowed there through the 1900 census.

 

WILLIAM J. PUTMAN  Division 2, DeKalb County

He has given up farming for teaching and is 43 GA (KY in 1850), Martha A. Hampton 39 GA and the kids are Mary A. 19 GA, Augustus (John Augustus) 17 GA, James 15 GA, William 12 AL, Joseph 9 AL, Martha 7 AL, Elijah 4 AL, Sarah 1 AL. I am guessing he is a son of Ezekiel Putman and Hannah Brazelton, born in that brief period that Ezekiel returned from Kentucky to Anderson County South Carolina before heading off to Hall County Georgia. They were here in 1850. Martha is a widow in 1870, in Walker County Georgia with three of her kids. In 1880, she is living with her son William Jacob, junior in Tarrant County Texas. They moved there in about 1875. Martha died August 1, 1885 in Weatherford, Texas and was buried in Birdville, Texas

 

DAVID L. PUTMAN  Division 2, DeKalb County

He is a blacksmith 45 SC (GA in 1850) and his wife Emily Tolbert 41 GA. Their kids are Martha Ann 17 AL, Mary 15 AL and Sarah Frances 6 AL. He is a blacksmith. If he were 45 he would have been born about 1815. He was in Cherokee County in 1850. I still vote that he and the above William are brothers and sons of Ezekiel Putman. Dave married Emily Tolbert in Marshall County Alabama on July 27, 1841. He first appears in Census records in 1850 while living in Cherokee County Alabama. I don’t find him in 1870, probably killed in the Civil War.

 

WILLIAM R. (ROSWELL) PUTMAN  Division 2, DeKalb County

He is a son of Barnet Putman and Ursula Poundland from Cleveland County North Carolina. He is 25 NC, Anna Clarissa Beam his wife is 20 NC and Ida 1 AL. He married Anna on May 28, 1857 in Cleveland County. He enlisted in the CSA at age 27 in Cleveland County on May 5, 1862. He served until February 21, 1865 when he either surrendered or deserted to the Union troops. He was confined at Washington, D.C. on February 24, 1865. He was released after the war and after taking the Oath of Allegiance. By 1920 they are still in Cleveland County he is 84 and Annie 79. Annie was widowed in 1930 at age 88.

 

FADY C. PUTMAN  Eastern Division, Franklin County

Sady Couch is the widow of Francis Putman who died here July 3, 1850. She is listed as age 48. She is with the family of John and Nancy (28) Stout. Nancy may well be her daughter listed before as Dracina. Also there are SARAH JANE 14 and ELIZA 12. They all seem to be Francis and Sady's. Two more of the children are in Lauderdale County (see Lucinda's listing there). Francis was the eldest son of Griggs and Sally Putman. He was born back in North Carolina in 1805, and married Sady here in 1823-24. They were in Lawrence County up until now.

 

EMILY PUTMAN  Eastern Division, Franklin County

She is 17 AL and a music teacher. She may well be Francis and Sady's daughter Mary.

 

JESSE PUTMAN  Division 4, Jackson County

Jesse, Wilson Putman and Rebecca Morris' son, married Ersula Freeman in 1858 and settled in to homemaking. He is 36 AL and Ersula 23 AL, and they have a 9 month old daughter Sarah Putman. But he seems to have got more than he bargained for. His spinster sister, Elizabeth 50 TN, moved in and so did four Hunter kids ranging from 2 months to 8 years. Not sure how the kids fit in, none of his sisters married a Hunter that I know of.

 

JOHN B. PUTMAN  Division 4, Jackson County

Another son of Wilson and Rebecca Putman. He is 30 TN, Rosanna Thompson is 27 AL, John B. (listed correctly as Joseph B. in 1870) 6 AL and Mary C. 1 AL. He was born in Rhea County Tennessee in 1830. He married Rosanna here on March 11, 1852. They are here through the 1880 but not in 1900.

 

WILSON PUTMAN  Division 4, Jackson County

Wilson junior turned 50 and Rebecca Flemming 48. He is a son of Wilson Putman and Rebecca Morris. He was born in Rutherford County North Carolina in 1812. His wife is Rebecca Flemming and they were married in Rhea County Tennessee October 20, 1830. They were here in 1840 and Madison County in 1850. Still at home are Daniel 19 AL, Wilson J. 15 AL, Martin 13 AL, Rebecca 10 AL, W. F. 8 AL (William, a son), Jesse 6 AL and John 2 AL. Rebecca will die shortly, and he will marry Elizabeth Wilson March 8, 1862. They will go up to Tennessee where he will die in the 1870s. Elizabeth is back here widowed by 1880. He is of course a son of Wilson Putman Senior and Rebecca Morris. He was born in Rutherford County North Carolina, and then went with his folks to Rhea County Tennessee and then down here.

 

SIMEON PUTMAN  Woods, Jefferson County

Simeon is 45 KY and Milly Howle his wife 38 SC. Martha L. is now 12 and Hiram Alexander 7 and Mary M. 1 have been added. This Simeon was a son of Hiram Putman and Loamy Mercer. The elder Simeon and the elder Hiram were both sons of The Reverend John Putman and Sarah Howard from South Carolina. Sim was born December 16, 1815 in Barren County Kentucky. He married E. Milly or Emily Howle in about 1846 in Randolph County Alabama. Milly was a daughter of Alexander Howle and Martha Morgan from Edgefield County South Carolina. Milly was born March 11, 1824. Both the Putmans and the Howles arrived in Arbacoochie, Randolph County about the same time. It was a gold mining town that has since disappeared. The family remained in Randolph County until the late 1850s when they moved to Jefferson County Alabama, and settled on Little Warrior River near Sayre, Alabama. ABEL PUTMAN  Lauderdale County

Bazel's son is 30 TN, Nancy Julia Cox 29 AL, Miles 7 AL, Elizabeth 6 AL and Liza 1 AL. Abel was born April 2, 1828 in Union County South Carolina. He married Nancy Cox, daughter of Jacob and Celia Cox, on February 8, 1849 in Lauderdale County Alabama. I only find him in the 1870 and 1880 census of Lauderdale County. In 1900, Nancy age 72 is living with her son Jesse and his family. Abel had died February 18, 1895. In 1910 Nancy, then 82, was living with Martin Cox. I would guess Martin was a brother. Nancy died in Lexington, Lauderdale County on January 3, 1916.

 

LUCINDA PUTMAN  Florence, Lauderdale County

She is a daughter of Francis and Sady Couch Putman and was with her widowed mother in Lawrence County in 1850. She is now living with her sister and brother in law Isaac S. Barr 27 AL and Rebecca E. Barr age 22 AL. Lucinda is 26 AL, Rebecca is her sister.

 

ABEL PUTNAM  Rogersville, Lauderdale County

He is a farmer 30 TN, his wife Nancy Julia Cox is 28 AL and they have Miles 7 AL, Elizabeth 6 AL and Liza 1 AL. He is a son of Bazel Putman and his first wife Millie. Abel was born April 2, 1828 in Union County South Carolina. He married Nancy Cox, daughter of Jacob and Celia Cox, on February 8, 1849 in Lauderdale County Alabama. I only find him in the 1860 through 1880 census of Lauderdale County. In 1900, Nancy age 72 is living with her son Jesse and his family. Abel had died February 18, 1895.

 

BAZEL PUTNAM  Rogersville, Lauderdale County

He is 55 NC (Should be SC), his wife Louisa is 50 NC, Melinda 29 TN, Nelly 24 TN and Lucinda 22 TN. Bazel was born in 1801 in Union County South Carolina. He was a son of Abel Putman and Milly Barnet. He was a grandson of James and Joice Putman. He moved to Tennessee right after his first marriage. He first appears in the 1840 census of Bedford County Tennessee with three young sons and three young daughters. At that time his first wife had died and Millie, his mom, had come to help out. In 1850 he was here in Lauderdale County at age 50 with his new wife named Louisa who is only 30. The ages are screwed up. In 1870, he is in Giles County Tennessee at age 68, Louisa is 60. I don’t find him in 1880, but most of the kids are back here then.

 

WILLIAM A. PUTMAN  Northern Division, Lawrence County

He is the son of Francis and Sady Putman. In 1850 his wife called herself Eliza, now she is Jane. He is 37 AL, Eliza Jane is 35 AL. Mary Jane is now 11 AL and they now have Rebecca 9 AL, Margaret P. 4 AL, Francis M. 2 AL. Bill is still a blacksmith. Also there is Jeremiah Michaels Putman 18 listed as a brother. Jerry Putman is another son of Francis Putman.

 

JOHN G. PUTMAN  Southern Division, Lawrence County

John 33 AL married since the last report. His wife Adelia is 30 AL and they have three kids, Eleanor 4 AL, Sarah 3 AL and Mary 1 AL. He is a son of Francis and Sady Putman.

 

ANSON PUTMAN  Northern Division, Lawrence County

Anson is 46 NC, Hester Royer his wife 44 TN. He seems to have dropped the clergyman role and took up farming which he now calls his occupation. John R. 19 AL, Sarah 16 AL, Charles 14 AL, Malinda 11 AL, Wesley B. 9 AL, William 6 AL, Josiah Green 3 AL and Mary F. 1 AL are at home. The older kids, George and Louisa have moved on. This family will be going to Maury County Tennessee. Anson will die there in 1865, and Hester ill be a widow there in the 1870. Then she and the kids will all head out to Navarro County Texas in the 1870s, and be there the rest of their lives. Interesting, there are a couple of Royer and Couch families in the immediate vicinity.

 

MARTIN PUTMAN  Guntersville, Marshall County

The Reverend is also a blacksmith he states. He is now 52 SC, Mahulda Parker 52 SC, Nancy 30 NC, Thomas 23 AL, Sarah Jane 21 AL, Susan 18 AL, Joseph F. 16 AL, William 14 AL, John G. 12 AL, Martin Marion 10 AL and Champion Farris 8 AL. They were in Morgan County in 1850, and are now living in Guntersville, Alabama. He is a son of Thomas and Hannah Putman from Rutherford County North Carolina and briefly in York County South Carolina where Martin was born in 1806. Muhulda will die in October 1869 of Puerperal Fever. Martin is shown as a widower in 1870. It then seems he married two more times. He married Jane Basham on October 15, 1871. She died and he married her sister Dorcas Basham on January 15, 1880.

 

MARY & SUSAN PUTMAN  Guntersville, Marshall County

Mary is 52 (born 1808 NC), Susan 50 (born 1810 NC). They are living with Robert and Manirva Elgin and that family. Manirva is 47 (born 1813 NC). I have the feeling they are all three Putman sisters. They also live in Guntersville, Alabama near Martin and Huldy. I would guess they are all related and children of Thomas Putman.

 

LUCINDA PUTMAN  Joy Bluff, Morgan County

Lucinda 75 NC, is Lucy Covington widow of John Putman. She is living with John and Virana Moore. Virana is Lucy's daughter. She is listed 23 AL, but is actually 36, as she was born March 25, 1824. She is listed okay in 1870. John was a son of Benjamin Putman Senior. He was born in Granville County North Carolina in about 1785. He married Lucinda Covington in about 1805 in Rutherford County North Carolina. John and Lucy were in the 1810 census of both Rutherford County North Carolina and York County South Carolina. He had received a land grant there in 1808. I do not find them in 1820, but they were in Morgan County Alabama in 1830. They were probably in Alabama by 1820, but the State did not record census data until 1830. The family was in Morgan County through the mid 1840s and then moved several miles west into Lawrence County where they were in 1850. John died there in the 1850s.

 

DARCUS PUTMAN  Joy Bluff, Morgan County

She is 14 and living with Sarah and Charles Royer. They are next door to the above listed Lucinda and the Moore family Sarah is 53 (born 1807 in NC) and most likely another daughter of John and Lucy. Darcus does not pop up in the 1850 census so this is tricky. She will, however, marry John Maze in Blount County on May 24, 1883. The Royer family married into the Putman family on several occasions here in Morgan and Lawrence Counties.

 

HIRAM PUTMAN  Randolph County

He is Hiram junior from Benton County. He is a mechanic 35 TN, his wife Alena is 28 AL, Josephine 10 AL, Rand 8 SC, Franklin 6 AL, Amanda 4 AL and an unnamed female just born. His dad was a son of the Reverend John Putman and Sarah Howard. Hiram was born October 6, 1783 in Union County South Carolina. He went to Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama, and they were all here in 1850. Young Hiram will die in the Civil War very soon.

 

JOEL A. PUTMAN  Ashville, St. Clair County

He was born in Kershaw, Laurens County South Carolina on August 30, 1821. He married Narcissa Coker on March 8, 1848 in St. Clair County Alabama. Narcissa was born in Alabama in 1827. Narcissa died in the early 1860s and Joel then married Malinda Ann Sanson in St. Clair County on March 6, 1864. Malinda was born in Georgia on November 15, 1839. Joel died in St. Clair County on April 26, 1891 and Malinda died on February 27, 1913 in Caddo County Oklahoma while visiting her son Claude. Her body was returned to St. Clair County for burial.

He is the son of Simeon Putman and Peggy Mercer. He is 48 KY and a waggoner. His wife Sarah Teague is 40 SC, William C. is 18 AL, John Howard 16 AL, Mary E. 14 AL, Margaret L. 12 AL, James M. 9 AL, Sarah L. 7 AL and Martha A. 6 AL. They were in Benton County in 1850, and will next be in Cleburne County.

He married Mary Lou Kelly from Georgia on April 20, 1865. They are in Blount County through the 1900 census, and he will die here September 7, 1908.

0110001  00110000.  He is a son of Hiram Putman and Loamy Mercer. He was born in 1822 in Tennessee. He married Ayrie Burch on February 1, 1839 in Benton County Alabama. Ayrie was born in South Carolina in 1823. Ayrie died around 1857, and Forester married Malissa J. Johnson on August 24, 1859 in Benton County. They were in Benton County in 1860. In 1870 he is in Cleburne County and again is widowed.

322  310. This is Howard Mercer Putman who was here in 1860. Howard Mercer Putman was born in Monroe County Kentucky in 1826. He is a son of Hiram and Loamy Mercer Putman. He married Sally Burch, who was the widow of his brother Silas Putman. Sally was a daughter of Reuben Burch and Sarah Pinson. They were both widowed with a couple of kids. Howard and Sally both die here in the later 1860s. The kids are all in Cleburne County on 1870.

311  131.  He is here with his wife Angie Walker and kids. John is a son of Reuben and Lucinda Putman. He was born in Laurens County South Carolina September 4, 1831. In St. Clair County Alabama, he married Angie Frances Walker on April 13, 1852. Angie was born in South Carolina on August 15, 1831 and was a daughter of John and Mary Walker. He served in the Alabama Infantry in the Civil War and was wounded in the right leg in the battle of Jonesboro, Georgia in 1864. They were in Benton County and this part changed name to Calhoun County. Angie died here September 12, 1888 and John died here November 29, 1907. Both are buried at Ten Island Cemetery in Ohatchee, Alabama.

Nancy Wildman was married to Sanford Vandiver Putnam here in 1860. He was killed in the Civil War. She is widowed here still in 1870 and 1880. Sanford is a son of Reuben and Lucinda Putman from Laurens County South Carolina. His brother John is still here in the County.

 

MONROE PUTNAM  Cherokee County

311 201. This is Thomas Monroe who was in Benton (Calhoun) County in 1850 and here in 1860. His second wife is Martha Jane Thomas. He is a son of Hiram Putman and Loamy Mercer. He was born in 1818 in Tompkinsville, Monroe County Kentucky. He moved with his folks to Hamilton County Tennessee. In about 1838, he married Mary (Polly) Richmond and they moved to Randolph County Alabama where they appear in the 1840 census. Mary died in the early 1840s, probably in the childbirth of their son John in 1841. The youngest two children, Martha Lou and John were taken in by Mary's mother, Martha Richmond, and her brother, William Rogers Richmond and his wife Mahala. They were raised by the Richmond family and appear with them in the 1850 and 1860 census reports for Bradley County Tennessee. He married Martha about 1845. They are in Cherokee County in 1870 and he will die there December 16, 1872. Martha will be widowed there through the 1900 census.

He is listed as Wilson in 1860, but is the same guy. William Wilson Putman was a son of William and Winnie Putman (I believe) from North Carolina. They were in Benton County in 1850 after moving from Rutherford County North Carolina in the mid 1840s, and were here in 1850 and 1860 and are still here in 1880. Anyway, he is now 54 NC and Susan Hullett his wife is 52 NC. Sarah E. is listed as a spinster at the old age of 24 AL. The rest are still at home as in 1860. Mary Jane 21 AL is listed as an idiot. George 16 AL, Andrew 14 AL and John 8 AL seem somewhat normal. Not sure who the John age 8 is. The son John married Martha Jane Stafford in 1861 and is not around now. I assume he died in the Civil War and this is his son, John Junior. Their son Benjamin is also missing since 1860 and assume another casualty. The son George Washington will marry Mary Elizabeth Ellis and Andrew Jackson will marry Rachel Clementine Pierce here May 11, 1877. They are all around in 1880.

 

JOHN C. (CALHOUN) PUTMAN  Blount County

Life is improving for John. In 1850 he was a farmer, in 1860 a day laborer and now he is a full fledged farmer once again. He is 59 SC and Nancy 49 SC. This is a good deal for Nancy, she was listed at 49 ten years ago and hasn't aged a day since. Kids are Susan 24 SC, Dulcy 22 AL, John Wesley 20 AL, James E. 18 AL, George W. 16 AL, Sarah Ann 13 AL and Josephine 8 AL. They are here in 1880. Susan will marry James Abbott here August 11, 1876. Dulcybelle will marry Islom Chamblee January 10, 1883. John Wesley will marry Millie Holly soon on January 19, 1871. James will marry Eliza Rutherford November 8, 1877. George Washington will marry Dicy Jane Sandlin here January 15, 1874. Sarah won’t get married till 1894, and Josephine will marry William Rutherford here June 16, 1881. Just keeping you all abreast of things.

 

REUBEN PUTMAN  Western Division, Blount County

Reuben Ira is 30 SC and now married. His wife Mary Lou Kelly is 26 born in Georgia. They have a son Drew (Henry Andrew) 3 AL. Also listed is a Mary Jane 27 GA. She isn’t Reuben’s sister, and have no ideas. He is a son of John and Nancy Putman. He was born February 17, 1844 in the Laurens District of South Carolina. He married Mary Lou Kelly from Georgia on April 20, 1865. They were in Blount County through the 1900 census. He died September 7, 1908. Mary Lou will die here February 16, 1921. A relative believes that Mary Lou was part Indian (her mother full blooded Cherokee). Reuben served in the Confederate Army in Alabama from November 1861 until 1865 when the War ended.

 

JAMES PUTNAM  White Plains, Calhoun County

His name is actually Josiah Taylor Putman, a son of Forester. Joe is 22 AL and a farm laborer, his wife Margaret Pruitt is 23 Al and they have a daughter Anna 3. Living with them is his sister Martha Putman 16 AL. She will soon marry Henry Ackridge.

John 36 SC and Angeline Walker his wife 38 SC now have at home Mary 19 AL, Martha 17 AL, Simeon (Simeon Sanford) 15 AL, J. R. (John Reuben) 13 AL, Zannie 11 AL, Frank (William Frank) 6 AL (should be 8), Van (James Vann) 8 AL (should be 6), and Nancy 9/12 AL. John is a son of Reuben and Lucinda Putman. Nancy 35 SC is the widow of Sanford Vandiver Putman who most likely died in the Civil War. She has four children at home. Mary Ann 14 AL, Elizabeth 11 AL, Tempey 10 AL and Vandiver 8 AL. Sanford was a son of Reuben and Lucinda Putman. He was born in Laurens County South Carolina. Sanford married Nancy Wildman in Calhoun County Alabama on December 12, 1854. There is also a marriage record of S. V. Putman marrying Nancy Black on December 5, 1854. I would guess this is the same woman. Perhaps she was a widow and her maiden name was either Wildman or Black. Not certain.

 

SIMEON H. (HOWARD) PUTMAN  Wihoge, Cleburne County

Simeon is now 57 KY, Sarah Teague 50 and with them are Mary 25, James 20, Sarah 18, Martha 16 and Josephine 7. Simeon is the son of Simeon Putman and Margaret ‘Peggy’ Mercer and has been here since the late 1830s. He married Sarah Teague in Benton County Alabama November 1, 1837. They will be in Marion County by 1880, and Sarah is widowed by 1900.

 

HOWARD M. PUTMAN FAMILY  Edwardsville, Cleburne County

Howard Mercer and his wife Sally Burch have both died and their children are fending for themselves on the farm. They are Silas Mercer 21 AL, Texas 17 AL, Simeon 16 AL, Harry (Harvey) 14 AL, John 12 AL, Hawkins 11 AL, Margaret 9 AL, Sarah 6 AL and Burcha (Emil Burch) 1 AL. By 1880 Silas and Simeon will be in Grayson County Texas and Harvey will be in Cooke County Texas the same time. Thomas Monroe Putman was a son of Hiram Putman and Loamy Mercer. He was born in 1818 in Tompkinsville, Monroe County Kentucky. He married Martha Jane Thomas in about 1843 in Benton County Alabama.

 

SILAS CASS PUTMAN  Bordens, Cleburne County

Thomas Monroe's son is now 21 AL, Nancy Meadows is 21 AL and they have James 1 AL. He was born in 1849. Silas married Nancy Meadows on January 3, 1869. Nancy will die here in the 1890s. By 1900 he had married Margaret (Mary) Hester Wheeler, the widow of Jeffery Palmer in about 1895. Silas himself died here in 1916.

He is by himself at age 46 KY. He’s a son of Hiram Putman and Loamy Mercer. He was born in 1825. I don't believe he married and I don’t find him again.

He is 59 KY and Eliza Ann, his daughter 25 AL. Looks like his second wife Melissa Johnson has died by 1870. He is a son of Hiram Putman and Loamy Mercer. He was born in 1822 in Tennessee during the short stay between Kentucky and Alabama. He married Ayrie Burch on February 1, 1839 in Benton County Alabama. Ayrie was born in South Carolina in 1823. Ayrie died in the mid 1850s and Forester married Melissa J. Johnson on August 24, 1859, and she has died in the past few years. He is not around in the 1880 census period.

 

RICHARD PUTMAN  Wihoge, Cleburne County

This is a Mulatto family. He is 22 AL, Mariah 25 AL, Mary 6 AL and Nina 4 AL.

 

J. (JAMES) G. PUTMAN  Attalla, Etowah County

I believe he is James G. Putman. He is 25 GA. Margaret Tennessee Thurman his wife is 20 TN and Charles 1 GA. They are living in a boarding house in Attalla. They will be in Greene County Missouri in 1880 and Martha and all the kids will be in Parker County Texas in 1900 and 1910. He is a son of William Jacob Putman and Martha Hampton from De Kalb County Alabama.

 

A. P. (ABRAHAM PINKNEY) PUTMAN  Bellefonte, Jackson County

Ezekiel's son is making a short stop over on the way to Texas. He is 43 GA, Mary Ann Brooks 43 GA, George Lee 18 GA, Jane 16 GA, Lydia 15 GA, Elias 13 GA, Mary 12 GA, Thomas 10 GA, Sarah 8 GA, Joseph 6 GA, Julia 6 GA, Elijah 4 GA and Charles 1 GA. He is a son of Ezekiel Putman and Hannah Brazelton from Cherokee County Georgia. Ezekiel was my Daniel’s brother and a son of Barnet Putman. Abraham Pinkney Putman was born in March 25, 1827 in Cherokee County Georgia, and died January 9, 1907 in Young County Texas. He married Mary Ann Brooke on September 28, 1847 in Cherokee County where a marriage record exists. She was born July 8, 1827 and died in Graham, Texas January 4, 1918. He is in Cherokee County Georgia in the 1860 census with seven children. He is here in Jackson County Alabama in 1870 and in 1880 he is in Young County Texas with Mary Ann and even more kids. In 1900 he is still in Young County Texas at age 73 with Mary Ann 72. Abe died by 1910 and Mary Ann is then 82 and living with her daughter Julia Timmons in Young County. There is more on him in the Texas Section.

 

JOHN J. PUTMAN  Bellefonte, Jackson County

He is Abraham's eldest son age 21 GA and born in 1848. He is working nearby as a field hand with the Allen family. He is single in Texas in 1880. He married Elizabeth Ann Holly on March 8, 1889. I don't find them in 1900, but in 1910 they are in Washita County Oklahoma. He died in Hollis, Oklahoma in 1933.

 

JAMES PUTMAN  Scottsboro, Jackson County

He is 34-35 AL, Malinda his second wife is 23 AL and what seem to be his kids are Dovey E. (Elizabeth in 1860) 12 TN and John T. 10 TN. Malinda is his second wife. He was married to Rachel Susan Brown in the 1860 census of Bedford County Tennessee. Like everyone around, they live with his widowed mom Nancy and all the kids of Morris Putman. James was born about 1836. He married Rachel Susan Brown in Coffee County Tennessee on October 1, 1856. They are in the 1860 census of Bedford County Tennessee with these two young children. I next find them in Grayson County Texas in 1880.

 

NANCY PUTMAN  Scottsboro, Jackson County

Nancy, still a widow, is now 60 NC. She was married to Morris Putman who was a son of Wilson Putman Senior and Rebecca Morris from Rutherford County North Carolina. The family moved to Jackson County Alabama by the 1840 census. This was where Morris died in 1848.  Nancy was in Jackson County in the 1850 census, but was just over the border in Franklin County Tennessee in 1860. There is a dual listing here. One family is headed by her and another by her son Morris, but they basically contain the same names although there is an occasional difference in ages by a year or two. I'll list everyone here, roughly by family grouping.

 

MORRIS PUTMAN  Scottsboro, Jackson County

This is Morris Junior. He is 26 AL and living with his mom Nancy and everyone else. He is listed as the head of household and now owns the farm. Young Morris was born about 1841. He will marry Elizabeth J. Williamson on January 4, 1871 in Jackson County. They are in Tarrant County Texas in 1880. In 1900 and 1910 Elizabeth was a widow living with their son Perry Putman.

 

RICHARD W. PUTMAN  Scottsboro, Jackson County

He is Morris son age 28 AL. Now, below Richard at the end of all the hodge podge in this huge list, we also get Martha Putman 36 AL. If this is the daughter of Morris who was 20 in the 1850 census, she should be 40 now. I vote for her being a single daughter of Morris and not a wife of Richard. This is also the last time I find Richard so know nothing more.

 

WILSON PUTMAN  Scotsboro, Jackson County

He is also a son of Morris Senior and living here with mom and his many brothers. He is 38 AL, and a widower for the second time. With him are John M. 10 TN and David Judson 3 AL. He married Mary Ann Keele in Coffee County Tennessee on December 22, 1859 and later he married her sister Sarah Ann Keele on January 10, 1861 also in Coffee County. On January 11, 1871, he will marry Roxanna or Roxy Ann Medford in Jackson County. Roxy was born in South Carolina in May 1839. By 1880, Wilson and Roxanna and more kids are in Fannin County Texas where they all will still be in 1900. In 1910 he is widowed in Grayson County Texas at age 79. JOHN B. PUTMAN  Scottsboro, Jackson County

He is listed as 43 TN, but should be 41. Rosanna Thompson is 38 AL, Joseph B.16 AL, James W. 9 AL, William W. 6 AL and Sarah C. 5 AL. They have been in this location for a while now. He is a son of Wilson Putman (Senior) and Rebecca Morris from North Carolina to Tennessee. John Putman was born in Rhea County Tennessee in 1820. He too was at home with his mother in 1850. He married Rosanna Thompson in Jackson County on March 11, 1852. They are in Jackson County in 1860 with two children, still here in 1870 with four children. In 1880 he has a new wife named Frances age 46. The age and place of birth (Alabama) are right for her to also simply be Rosanna going under her middle or some other name. I am not at all certain here. By 1900, most all the kids are in Tarrant County Texas. It would appear the whole gang moved there and then both the folks died leaving all the kids on the farm to fend for themselves.

 

WILLIAM PUTMAN  Scottsboro, Jackson County

Morris and Nancy's son is now 44 TN, Elizabeth Myers 33 AL, Mary 11 TN, Frances 9 TN, William R. 7 AL, Henry Edward 4 AL and Robert Lee 1 AL. And, they are living by themselves. He was born March 27, 1827 and married Elizabeth in Coffee County August 21, 1857. She was originally from Limestone County Alabama. They will return soon to Jackson County Alabama where he will die August 6, 1877. Elizabeth will make it till 1905.

 

WILLIAM F. PUTMAN  Scottsboro, Jackson County

He is 18 AL and Nancy J. is 24 AL. He lives near the above William and Elizabeth, but is not theirs. He is a son of Wilson Putman Junior and Rebecca Flemming and born here in 1852. He was home with them in 1860. I don’t know Nancy’s last name and they are not found in 1880.

 

ABEL PUTMAN  Lauderdale County

He is 42 SC, Nancy Julia Cox (listed as Julia) 40 AL, Miles 16 AL, Adaline 14 AL, Charles 11 AL, Jacob (Wiley) 8 AL, Susan Elva 6 AL and Elizabeth Ann 3 AL. He is a son of Bazel Putman and his first wife. Abel was born April 2, 1828 in Union County South Carolina. He married Nancy Cox, daughter of Jacob and Celia Cox, on February 8, 1849 in Lauderdale County Alabama. I only find him in the 1860 through 1880 census of Lauderdale County. Abel will die February 18, 1895. In 1900, Nancy age 72 is living here with her son Jesse and his family. She will die here January 3, 1916.

 

JOHN PUTMAN  Range 7, Lawrence County

Francis' son is now 44 (born about 1826) his wife is listed as Ann age 41 AL, but it was Adelia in 1860 the same age so I guess the same wife. Children are Mary (Eleanor) 18, Sarah F. (Fanny) 12, Mary (Emmey) 9, Martha (Mattie) 7 and James 6. The names in brackets were those used in 1860 and 1880, but ages all tie in just fine. The kicker is an Elizabeth Putman age 35 living with them. I believe she is Francis's daughter, and this John's sister, originally listed as Rebecca. Elizabeth may be her middle name. The ages are right and I do not know who else she might be. She will head up the household with all the kids in 1880. John and his wife must have died in the 1870s.

 

JOHN (?) PUTMAN  Range 7, Lawrence County

She is listed as a female age 43 AL living as a housekeeper with Martha West 64 SC. I have a feeling that she might be William Putman's widow, Jane. William was a son of Francis and Sady and is not around in 1870.

 

L. PUTMAN  Range 8, Lawrence County

She is 13 AL listed ‘at home’ with S. A. and S. M. Beaty. There are a couple of Pitman kids in the Range 8 area that look like orphans, and I’ll bet she is one too.

 

J. PUTMAN  Lee County

She is 24 GA and a worker at the local cotton mill. She is the right age to be Jane Patman, daughter of Upston Patman or Putman as shown in Randolph County in 1850, but wasn’t shown in 1860. Just don’t know.

 

JOHN PUTMAN  Madison County

He is 20 GA living in Huntsville with Lewis Grimes. This is John Ezekiel Putman, a son of Elijah Covington from Georgia. He will be marrying Lewis' daughter Sarah in November 1870 and they will head out to Newton County Missouri.

 

MARTIN PUTMAN  Marshall County

The Reverend is 62 SC and widowed. His wife Muhulda Parker died in October 1869 of Puerperal Fever His daughter Nancy 39 AL, Martin 19 AL and Jesse Young 7 AL are at home with him. Jesse Young is a son of his daughter Sarah Jane Putman who married Jesse Young back in 1861. He married two more times. He married Jane Basham on October 15, 1871. She died and he married her sister, Dorcas Basham on January 15, 1880. I don’t find him listed in 1880, but he should be here, as he will die here May 19, 1882.

 

WILLIAM PUTMAN  Marshall County

William is a son of Martin and Hulda Putman, and is 24 AL. His wife Manilla Aldridge is 17 AL. They are recorded as marrying in Blount County on October 7, 1867. No children yet.

 

ZEDDIE PUTMAN  Marshall County

Zedoc is 47 SC and his wife is Margaret C. 32 TN. With them is Mary Mabry 17 GA. I assume Margaret brought Mary along with her as her sister. Mary Mabry will be marrying Martin Marion Putman in 1879. Margaret is widowed here in 1880 with a son Zedoc born in 1875 with her. Zed is a son of Thomas Putnam from North Carolina. He was born in the period that Thomas moved over the line into York County South Carolina. Martin Putman here is his oldest brother.

 

JOHN E. (EDWARD) PUTMAN  Mobile, Mobile County

He is a customs inspector 37 VT, Sarah J. 30 OH, Fred H. 4 IL. He is a son of John Putnam and his second wife Roxanna Howard from Grafton, Vermont. He was born there August 3, 1834. They are in St. Louis, Missouri by 1880 and still in Missouri in 1900.

He is 38 GA, Augusta 27 GA and they have a daughter Clifrent (?) age 7 GA. No ideas here. He is running a bookstore in town.

 

GEORGE PUTNAM  Mobile, Mobile County

He is a school superintendent 32 VT, Jennie (Emily Jane Dodge) 26 NH. Also listed are a bunch of teachers including his sister Roxana Caroline Putnam 20 VT. He is a son of John Putnam and Caroline Roxana Howard of Grafton, Vermont. He was home there through 1860, but not now. He will next be in Bodie, Mono County California by 1880.

He is 18 AL working for John and Margaret Gaye in Marion, Alabama. He looks to be the son of Forester Putman from Calhoun County. He will be back there and married by the 1880.

Henry is 22, Peter 30 AL. They are Black farm hands. Slaves up till now.

 

ANDREW J. (JACKSON) PUTNAM  Hatchenchubbee, Russell County

I think he is Hosea Putnam's son over from Muscogee County Georgia. He is 42 GA, Elizabeth is 50 GA, James 15 GA, Mary Elizabeth 12 GA, Jane 10 GA. He is a blacksmith. He was listed in the 1850 census of Pike County. He was here in the 1866 State Census. He was born in 1828 and was a carriage maker living with Joseph Brown. In 1860 they were in Muscogee County Georgia and then here in 1870.

 

JOHN W. (WILLIAM) PUTNAM  Hatchenchubbee, Russell County

He is living with his brother Andrew above. He is 25 GA, Jane (Eugenia Jackson) 21 AL and they have Dora 1 AL. He is a farm hand. He was born in 1846 in Muscogee County Georgia. He moved to Russell County Alabama and there married Eugenia Jane Jackson on November 21, 1867. They were there in the 1870, 1880 and 1900 census returns. In 1910 and 1920, he is in Lee County Alabama. Eugenia is alive in 1910, but in 1920 he is 75 and has a new 41 year old wife named Florence.

 

JOHN HOWARD PUTMAN  Branchville, St. Clair County

Simeon H.'s son is 26 AL, Cerina Adkins 24 AL, John 7 AL, Mary L. 4 AL and Sarah E. 1 AL. William Adkins, a brother of hers, lives next door. They will be in Marion County in 1880.

 

JOEL PUTMAN  Ashville, St. Clair County

He is 50 SC, his second wife Malinda Sanson is 28 GA. Sanford Allen is 19 AL, Nancy Jane 16 AL, Joel Madison 14 AL, Amintha 12 AL, John W. 9 AL, Vuella 5 AL, Meredith 3 AL and Lucinda 1 AL. Joel was a son of Reuben and Lucinda Putman. He was born in Kershaw, Laurens County South Carolina on August 30, 1821. He married Narcissa Coker on March 8, 1848 in St. Clair County Alabama. Narcissa was born in Alabama in 1827. Narcissa died in the early 1860s and Joel then married Malinda Ann Sanson in St. Clair County on March 6, 1864. Malinda was born in Georgia on November 15, 1839. Joel died in St. Clair County on April 26, 1891 and Malinda died on February 27, 1913 in Caddo County Oklahoma while visiting her son Claude. Her body was returned to St. Clair County for burial.

 

JANE PUTMAN  Ashville, St. Clair County

Martha Jane Stafford is the widow of John Thomas Putman who was killed in the Civil War. He was a son of William Wilson Putman and Susan Hullett from Blount County. married Martha in Blount County on October 31, 1861. At any rate she is 24 AL and has a son John age 7 AL. She lives with her mother, Lucinda Stafford 46 AL and her sister Mary 14 AL. She will remarry soon to William Pannell and they will be in Ellis County Texas for the 1880 census. So will her son John.

George is 25 AL NC SC and his wife Mary Ellen Ellis is 27 AL AL AL. He is Wilson and Susan's son. They are here in 1900 with one son Monroe Ellis Putman born on Saint Patrick’s Day March 17, 1883.

 

(WILLIAM) WILSON PUTMAN  Hardwicks Mountain Beat, Blount County

He is 64 NC VA NC, Susan Hullett his wife is 62 NC. With them are Andrew J. 23 AL, Sarah E. 33 AL, Mary 31 AL, R. (Rachel) Clementine 24 AL, James (Joshua) 2 AL, S. (Sarah) Lucretia 1 AL and John T. (Thomas) 3 months old AL. Rachel Clementine Pierce is Andrew Jackson's wife, and the young kids are theirs. William Wilson Putman was a son of William and Winnie Putman (I believe) from North Carolina. They were in Benton County in 1850 after moving from Rutherford County North Carolina in the mid 1840s, and were here in 1850 and are still here. They will die in the next decade or at least before 1900. Andrew Jackson married Rachel Clementine Pierce here May 11, 1877. They are here in 1900 and Rachel is widowed here from 1910 through1930.

 

JOHN W. PUTMAN  Beat 2, Blount County

John is the first of a whole bunch of the sons of good old John C. Putman and his wife Nancy who will be listed in a minute. They all live next to and on top of each other. Anyway, this is John Wesley Putman 27 AL SC SC, and his wife Millie Angeline Holly 20 GA GA GA. They have a 9 year old son whose name looks like Arlander, but is Richard Lander. This family is still here in 1900. He was born in January 1848 in Alabama. He married Milly Angeline Holly January 19, 1871. They remained in Blount County Alabama through the 1900 census report. In 1900, his wife is listed as Mary Jane age 45. In 1920 he was listed as 70 and she at 65. He died October 15, 1921.

 

JAMES E. PUTMAN  Beat 2, Blount County

James is 24 AL SC SC and his wife Eliza Alice Rutherford 18 AL NC NC, and a 10 month old daughter Viola Lee. His sister Josephine married William M. Rutherford in 1881. He is another son of John C. and Nancy Putman. He was born in Alabama in 1849. He married Eliza on November 8, 1877. They will remain in Blount County through 1920 when he is 68 and Eliza 59. Eliza is widowed here in 1930.

 

REUBEN I. (IRA) PUTMAN  Beat 2, Blount County

Reuben is 36 SC SC SC and his wife Mary Lou Kelly is 36 GA GA GA. In 1870 they had a 3 year old Andrew. Now they do not list him, but have Henry C. 11, Margaret L 9, Nancy A. 6, John C. 4 and William Ira 1. His sister, Sarah Ann 22 is living with them. He was born February 17, 1844 in the Laurens District of South Carolina. He married Mary Lou Kelly from Georgia on April 20, 1865. They are in Blount County through the 1900 census. He died September 7, 1908. In 1910, Mary Lou is living with her son James Louis Putman. Mary Lou is still with James Louis in 1920. Reuben’s birth and death dates come from his tombstone in Mount Taber Cemetery in Blount County. Mary Lou was born November 21, 1843 and died February 16, 1921. A relative believes that Mary Lou was part Indian (her mother full blooded Cherokee). Reuben served in the Confederate Army in Alabama from November 1861 until 1865 when the War ended.

 

JOHN C. (CALHOUN) PUTMAN  Beat 2, Blount County

These are dad and mom. He is 66 and Nancy 60. Their daughter Susannah had married James W. Abbott in 1876, but has returned home. Susannah Abbott was 31. John's daughters Dulcy 29 and Josephine 18 are with him as well. Dulcy will marry Isom Chamblee in 1883 and Josephine will marry Bill Rutherford in 1881.

 

GEORGE W. (WASHINGTON) PUTMAN  Hantsville, Blount County

George is finally the last of John C. Putman's kids. He is 24 AL SC SC and his wife Dicy Jane Sandlin is 21 AL AL AL. They have a daughter Dellah 3 AL. He was born in Alabama in 1853. He married Dicy Jane Sandlin in Blount County January 15, 1874. I do not find them in 1900, but their son George Junior is in Texas living with his maternal grandfather. I would assume that both George and Dicy had died by 1900.

 

M. W. PUTNAM  Cross Plains, Calhoun County

He is 43 KY KY KY and his wife A.T. is 35 AL VA VA. He has sons Kenny 6 AL and Pierce 2 AL. He works for the Railroad. I can’t find him in Kentucky or anywhere before or after this. There were a lot of Pitman and Patman families not related to the Putnams or Putmans. Just don’t know.

 

JANE PUTNAM  Davisville, Calhoun County

She is 41 GA NC NC, and has a son John H. M. 15 AL TN GA and her sister Eliza Johnson 35 GA NC NC. No guesses here, except daddy was from Tennessee.

 

S. (SUSAN) PUTMAN  June Bug, Calhoun County

She is 72 NC NC NC and boarding with William and Mary Jane Elgin along with several others. Ed found a cemetery record where she was born May 22, 1808 and died here December 8, 1888 and buried here in Zion Cemetery. Not any ideas about who she is.

 

NANCY PUTMAN  Peaks Hill, Calhoun County

Sanford Vandiver Putman's widow, Nancy Wildman, is 44 and has three daughters at home: Mary 23, Tempie 18 and Sarah 16. Elizabeth who would be 19 is probably married. Sanford was a son of Reuben and Lucinda Putman. He was born in Laurens County South Carolina.

 

JOHN W. PUTMAN  Peaks Hill, Calhoun County

John is 48 SC SC SC and Angilina Frances Walker his wife is 47 SC. Their children are Mary 25 AL, Martha 24 AL, Zany 16 AL, James 14 AL, Frank 12 AL, Georgiana and Louisa (Nancy Louise) 10 year old twins born AL. He is another son of Reuben and Lucinda Putman. He was born in Laurens County South Carolina September 4, 1831. In St. Clair County Alabama, he married Angie Frances Walker on April 13, 1852. Angie was born in South Carolina on August 15, 1831 and was a daughter of John and Mary Walker. He served in the Alabama Infantry in the Civil War and was wounded in the right leg in the battle of Jonesboro, Georgia in 1864. They were in Benton County and this part changed name to Calhoun County. Angie died here September 12, 1888 and John died here November 29, 1907.

 

JOHN REUBEN PUTMAN  Peaks Hill, Calhoun County

Young John is 19 and his wife Lucy Harris is 19 as well. They have an 8 month old daughter Effie. He lives either with or next to his folks John and Angie Putman. He was born in 1858-1859. He married Lucy D. Harris in Calhoun County Alabama December 5, 1878. In 1900, he is in Hempstead County Arkansas with a new wife named Mary Reardon. They were married in Hempstead County January 16, 1896. In 1910 Mary is a widow and she is still there in De Roan Hempstead County in 1930.

 

JOHN PUTMAN  Sulphur Springs, Calhoun County

He is 28 AL AL AL and Sarah McArry his wife is 26 AL. They have 4 kids, Margaret 6 AL, Liza 4 AL, Foster 3 AL and Sarah 1 AL. Also here is her sister Elizabeth McArry 27 AL. He is the son of Forester Putman and Ayrie Burch. He was born in 1854. His wife is Sarah Texanna McArry, they were married in Calhoun County on August 15, 1872. Sarah is widowed in the 1900 census of Calhoun County with Forester and Claudius at home. In 1910 and 1920 she is listed as Texanna again and is living with her daughter Eliza and her husband Jesse Crow.

 

JAMES H. (HIRAM) PUTMAN  Beat 3, Cherokee County

He is the son of Thomas Monroe Putman. He is 27 AL KY KY (should be AL KY SC) and his wife Elizabeth 26 AL. They have a son Manse (Monroe W.) 7 AL, Mary 3 AL and Margaret 6 months AL. They are in Cleburne County in the 1900 census.

 

MARTHA PUTMAN  Beat 3, Cherokee County

Martha Jane Thomas 52 SC SC SC is the widow of Thomas Monroe Putman. At home still are Thomas 22 AL KY SC, George 18 AL, William 14 AL and Mary 11 AL. Thomas was a son of Hiram Putman and Loamy Mercer, and was born in 1818 in Tompkinsville, Monroe County Kentucky. He moved with his folks to Hamilton County Tennessee. In about 1838, he married Mary (Polly) Richmond and they moved to Randolph County Alabama where they appear in the 1840 census. Mary died in the early 1840s, probably in the childbirth of their son John in 1841. He married Martha about 1845. They were in Benton County in 1850 and here since. He died here December 16, 1872. Martha will be widowed through the 1900 census.

 

SILAS PUTMAN  Bordens, Cleburne County

He is Silas Cass Putman the son of Thomas Monroe Putman and is 34 AL KY TN, his wife Nancy Meadows is 30 AL TN TN. They have three children Texas M. (Martha) 8 AL, Thomas 4 AL and William 1 AL. Silas married Nancy Meadows on January 3, 1869. Nancy will die here in the 1890s. He will marry Margaret (Mary) Hester Wheeler, the widow of Jeffery Palmer in about 1895. Silas will die here in 1916.

 

JAMES PUTNAM  Phillips, Etowah County

He is 33 AL, Addie 5 AL and John 3 AL. This is a Black family.

 

J. T. (JOSIAH TAYLOR) PUTMAN  Etowah County

He is the son of Forester and Ayrie Birch Putman from Calhoun County. He was living next to John W. Putman in Calhoun County in 1870, but was not part of that family. Anyway Joe is 33 AL KY SC, Margaret J. Pruett 34 AL. They have two daughters Ara A. (Anna in 1870) 12 AL and Anna L. (Anna Lucy) 5 AL.

 

BELLE PUTMAN  Beat 18, Jackson County

She is 12 TN AL TN and a housekeeper with a Gray family from North Carolina, both age 75. She would be a daughter of Wilson and Elizabeth Putnam. Her widowed mom is listed nearby, but the family wasn’t listed in 1870 so just can’t be sure. The TN AL TN matches the other kids

 

BETTY PUTMAN  Beat 18-19, Jackson County

She is 18 AL AL AL and a servant with a Williams family. I can’t find her in 1870.

 

ELIZABETH PUTMAN  Beat 18, Jackson County

She is 44 TN NC TN and has these children are Martha 16 TN, Tilda 10 TN and George 15 TN. The kids are all TN AL TN. She is Elizabeth Wilson, second wife of Wilson Putman who died in the 1870s. Wilson was a son of Wilson Putman and Rebecca Morris. They were here in 1850 and 1860. The family was ‘missing’ in 1870, but was most likely in Franklin County Tennessee where the kids were born. She returned here after Wilson died in the early 1870s. There is a Nancy Wilson 66 TN living next door who may be her mother, or at least kinfolk. The son George Washington was born May 14, 1865. He will move to Denton County Texas in a few years, and there marry Mary Jane Cole on October 11, 1891.

 

ELLEN PUTMAN  Beat 18, Jackson County

She is 22 AL -- -- single and a servant with the John Jones family. She is a daughter of Jesse Putman and Ersula Freeman. She will marry James Latham here in Jackson County on April 3, 1884, and then die two years later on November 30, 1886.

 

GEORGE & RICHARD PUTMAN  Beat 18, Jackson County

George Wilson is 15 AL AL AL and James Richard is 13 AL AL AL. They are servants in a Frazier family. They are sons of Jesse Putman and Ersula Freeman also from here in Jackson County. Both Jesse and Ersula died in the 1870s, and there are several orphans of his around the County. James Richard will marry Margaret Robinson here January 17, 1895. She will die in childbirth in 1896 and James will be here in 1900 and then die himself June 25, 1901. I dn’t believe George ever married and in 1900 is living his brother John William’s widow Mary Jane Cochran.

 

JOHN PUTMAN  Laninsford, Jackson County

He is 18 AL AL AL living with W. Eustace and his wife Rebecca. He is another of Jesse's orphans. He will marry Mary Jane Cochran here in 1883, and die in the mid to late 1890s.

 

JOSEPH PUTMAN  Laninsford, Jackson County

He is Joseph Barnet Putman 26 AL AL TN and his wife Margaret Beatrice Flanagan 19 AL AL AL and a 1 year old daughter Phelicia. They were married here August 4, 1878. He lives next door to his dad John B. Putman (listed below). They will be in Tarrant County Texas shortly. Margaret will die there in 1899 and Joe will still be there in the 1930 census.

 

JOHN B. PUTMAN  Laninsford, Jackson County

Wilson Putman's son. John is 53 TN TN NC and his new (?) wife Frances F. 46 AL NC TN. Their kids are all AL TN AL and are James 18, William 16, Sallie 13, Frederick A. 12, Robert D. 6 and Luanna 2. Rosanna Thompson his first wife must have died and John remarried. In 1900 all the children, except James, are in Tarrant County Texas. It looks as if the whole family moved to Texas and John died, as the kids are all ‘running’ the farm at that time.

 

JAMES PUTNAM Birmingham, Jefferson County

He is a single Black man 43 GA GA GA and boarding.

 

HIRAM A. (ALEXANDER) PUTMAN  Township 15 Range 5, Jefferson County

He is 25 AL TN SC and his wife Mary Elizabeth Hollis is 17 AL SC AL. They have two boys Thomas H. 2 and John D. 6 months. They live next to three of her brothers, Jonathan, David and Elijah Hollis and their families. Hiram is the son of Simeon S. Putman and E. Milly Howle. He was born January 3, 1852. He married Mary Elizabeth Hollis on March 19, 1877 in Jefferson County Alabama. He died October 13, 1936 in McCormick, Alabama.

 

ABEL PUTMAN  Township 1 Range 8, Lauderdale County

He is now 51 SC as is Nancy Cox. Living at home still are Miles 28 AL, Wylie 18 AL, Adeline 17 AL, Elva 15 AL, Eliza Ann 13 AL, Frances 10 AL, Jesse 8 AL and Franklin 6 AL. In 1900, Franklin is listed as Able F. Also here is Nancy's father Jacob Cox 88 NC. He is a son of Bazel Putman and his first wife. Abel was born April 2, 1828 in Union County South Carolina. He married Nancy Cox, daughter of Jacob and Celia Cox, on February 8, 1849 in Lauderdale County Alabama. I only find him in the 1860 through 1880 census of Lauderdale County. Abel will die February 18, 1895. In 1900, Nancy age 72 is living here with her son Jesse and his family. She will die here January 3, 1916.

 

M. A. (MILES RICHARD) PUTMAN  Township 1 Range 8, Lauderdale County

This is Miles listed again with his own family next door to his dad Abel. He is, of course, 28 and his wife Susan Jane Sledge 25 TN TN TN. Their children are Thomas 12 AL, Richard 10 AL and Christine 1 AL. Miles born June 6, 1851. He married Susan Jane Sledge on January 10, 1873. She was born July 26, 1858. They are here in 1900. Susan will die April 1, 1904, and Miles remarried Anna Liles January 9, 1906. In 1910 she is called Anna, and called Indiana in 1920. They aren’t in the 1930 census.

 

GEORGE W. PUTMAN  Township 1 Range 8, Lauderdale County

He is 20 AL TN TN and his wife Mary E. Thornton is 21 AL AL AL. They live on the other side of Abel. He is a son of Francis and Polly Putman. They are here through 1920.

 

POLLY PUTMAN  Township 2 Range 9, Lauderdale County

Polly is 41 AL TN TN and is a widow. Her kids are all AL TN TN and are Mary 19, Sallie 16, William 10 and Mattie 6. She is connected to Bazel's family. Mary ‘Polly’ White married Bazel’s son Francis about 1856 and he died here in the mid 1870s. I do not find these folks in 1870. I don’t find her listed in 1900, but she is here in 1910 at age 71 living with her married daughter Mattie listed here. She will die here February 16, 1919.

 

ISAAC PUTMAN & OTHER PUTMANS  Township 2 Range 9, Lauderdale County

Isaac is 26 AL NC NC and his wife Belle is 22 AL NC AL and they have a 2 year old listed Baby AL NC AL. Then there are two older women SARAH PUTMAN 45 AL NC NC and MALINDA PUTMAN 43 AL NC NC. Also in the household is NANCY REESE 28 AL NC NC and two of her kids James 6 and John 4 both AL AL AL. Isaac is one of Bazel's sons. Ike lives next door to Zeck (Zadock) another of Bazel's sons. All three gals listed here are his sisters.

 

ZECK PUTMAN  Township 2 Range 9, Lauderdale County

Zedock lives next door to Isaac, above. He is 30 AL NC NC and his wife Eliza 25 TN MS TN. They have Elizabeth 3 AL and George F. 6 months AL. Zedoc is one of Bazel Putman's kids. In 1850 Bazel had a Zedock 5 and a Nancy 3 among others. This Zeck and the above Nancy Reese appear to be these children. In 1850 Bazel was 50 so he must have had older children. Zedoc was born about 1845 in Alabama. He is probably the 'Dedrick' listed next to dad in the 1870 Giles County census with a wife named Eliza. Eliza must have died in the early 1880s, as on January 13, 1885 Zed married Nancy Croney from Lauderdale County. Zed died before 1900, as Nancy was widowed there in 1900 and living with her sister Susannah Croney. A couple of the boys are still around in 1900.

 

FRANK PUTMAN  Lawrence County

He is 20 AL AL AL and a boarder and laborer with John Cooper and his wife. He is Francis M. Putman a son of William A. and Eliza Jane Putman. William A. was a son of Francis and Sady Putman. He will soon marry Eliza McDaniels in Morgan County on November 26, 1882.

 

ELIZABETH PUTMAN  Lawrence County

Elizabeth 48 AL SC TN is most likely the sister of Francis Putman. She was living here with John and Adelia in 1870. She has a bunch of nieces and nephews with her that are the children of John and Adelia Putman who are no longer shown on the census. They are Fanny 22 AL, Emmey 20 AL, Mattie 18 AL, James 16 AL and John 9 AL. Their folks must have died in the early 1870s.

 

ELIZABETH PUTNAM  Brownville, Lee County

Elizabeth is 78 GA and now lives with her married or divorced daughter Martha Burrus 43 GA and her kids. She sure looks like Elizabeth Wilson who was married to Hosea Putnam back in Georgia

 

 

 

SIMEON PUTMAN  Marion County

He moved with his son from Cleburne to Marion clear across the state in the 1870s. He is now 67 KY, and Sarah Teague his wife 59 SC. Only Josephine 17 AL is still at home. Simeon will die November 1, 1888, and by 1900 his wife Sarah, now 79, is living as the mother in law of Marshall Norton in Lawrence County Alabama. Marshall had married her daughter Martha Ann.  Marshall and Martha and their family are living here with them or next door. Probably all on the same farm. Simeon is the son of Simeon Putman and Margaret ‘Peggy’ Mercer and has been here since the late 1830s. He married Sarah Teague in Benton County Alabama November 1, 1837. Sarah is widowed by 1900.

 

JOHN HOWARD PUTMAN  Marion County

Simeon's son is 36 AL and his wife Cerina Frances Adkins is 33 AL. Their children were John F. 17 AL, Mary L. 14 AL, Sarah E. 12 AL, Lewis S. 9 AL, Thomas J. 7 AL, Joseph M. 5 AL, Martha M. 4 AL, Frances C. 3 AL and Eliza 8 months old. They live either with or next to his parents. He was born October 19, 1843, and married Cerina August 21, 1861. She was born October 12, 1846. She died in Texas in 1899. In 1900, John is living with his son Lewis in Cass County Texas. John died in Stacy, McCullock County Texas on November 21, 1908.

 

JOHN PUTMAN  Marshall County

He is a son of Rev. Martin Putman. He is 30 AL NC NC and his wife Patia (Patricia?) is 25 AL. They have a daughter, Lula 1 AL. He is a farmer. This family will be in Burleson County Texas in 1900.

 

MARGARET PUTMAN  Marshall County

She is the widow of Zedock Putman (listed in 1870 as Zeddie) and was here in 1870. She now is 42 TN with rheumatism. She has a 5 year old son, Zedrack (Zadoc Lina born February 6, 1875 in AL). She lives next door to a couple of Rev. Martin Putman's kids, Marion and Champ.

 

MARION PUTMAN  Marshall County

He is Martin Marion Putman son of Martin and Muhulda Putman from here, and is 30 AL NC NC. His wife Mary E. Mabry is 27 AL GA GA. A nephew Jesse Young 17 AL TN AL is with them as he was with Martin Senior in 1870. Jesse is a son of Jesse Young and Sarah Jane Putman. This family will be here again in 1900. He was born here April 9, 1850 and married Mary here on August 31, 1879. They will be here all their lives. He will die here April 21, 1922.

 

CHAMPION PUTMAN  Marshall County

Champion Farris Putman, son of Martin Putman, is 25 AL NC NC. His wife listed as Lucy 28 AL AL AL, is Louisiana M. Roberts and they were married August 15, 1872. Their children were Dewitt C. 6 AL, Huldah E. 5 AL, Elmer J. 4 AL, Frances M. 2 AL and Martin 8 months old. They will have more kids including Joseph in 1885, George Washington in 1888 and Molly in 1890. He is working on his brother Marion’s farm. He was born September 18, 1852. By 1900 they are in Webster County Mississippi. He was named after a Minister who preached with Martin in Alabama where Reverends Farris and Putman served in the same church. Champ died in Eupora, Webster County Mississippi on January 4, 1927.

 

JAMES W. (WINSTON) PUTMAN  Marshall County

James Winston Putman is the eldest of Martin's kids. He is 46 NC NC NC and his wife Elizabeth Guire is 44 AL SC SC. The eldest child is a schoolteacher Huldah 22 AL, named for James' mom, Joanna 20 AL, James M. 19 AL, Sarah E. 16 AL, Robert E. 14 AL, George B. 12 AL, Owen M. 9 AL and Marcus M. 7 AL. He was born in North Carolina on January of 1834. He married Elizabeth Guire on June 1, 1853 in Morgan County.  He too was a Baptist Preacher and followed his father at several churches. He was ordained in 1880. He moved to Cullman, Alabama in 1889. Elizabeth will die, and he will go to Texas in the late 1880s, and there marry Mary Elizabeth Lindsey of Wichita Falls. They will be in Kaufman County in Texas in 1900. The sons Owen and Marcus are in Hill County Texas then, and James Martin Putman will be in Navarro County Texas in 1900 and be married to Eliza Ann Farris from here in Alabama. They went out about 1895 or 1896.

 

JOHN W. PUTNAM  Hatchenchubbee, Russell County

He is Hosea Putnam's son and a house carpenter 36 GA -- GA and his wife Eugenia M. Jackson is 28 but should be 33 according to the 1900 census as they are still living in Russell County at that time. They were married here on November 21, 1867. In 1880 they used only initials, I got the names from the 1900 returns. Their children were: L.D. (Dora) a daughter 11 AL, William H. 9 AL (see Lee Co in 1900), Minnie E. 7, Charles B. (Bradford) 5 AL, John R. (Robert) 3 AL, L.E. a daughter and L.L. a son both 4 months old. Neither are here in 1900. I still have no idea how Hosea fits in the picture or any clue as to his folks.

 

JOEL A. PUTMAN  Ashville & Old Town, St. Clair County

Joel lost his first wife Narcissa Coker and married Malinda Ann Sanson in 1864. He is now 60 SC SC SC and Malinda 40 GA. Kids are Meredith a son 13 AL, Lucinda W. 11 AL, William 9 AL, Reuben (Glen Reuben) 7 AL, Cicero 4 AL and Claudia 2 AL. He is a son of Reuben and Lucinda Walker Putnam from Laurens County South Carolina. Malinda is still around in 1900, and by 1910 she and her sons Claude and Meredith are in Caddo County Oklahoma.

 

UPSTON PATMAN  Dunlap, St. Clair County

Here I'd been thinking he was killed in the Civil War, but no. He is 57 GA GA GA and his wife Gilley Croft 55 SC SC SC. Their son John lives either with them or next door. Remember this may a Patman family from Georgia. They are in Calhoun County in 1900 in their mid 70s.

 

JOHN PATMAN  Dunlap, St. Clair County

John is 22 and his wife Angeline Walker is 23. They have Mary 2 and Martha 4 months old. Again they are Patmans not Putmans.

 

SANFORD S. (SIMEON) PUTMAN  Trout Creek, St. Clair County

Sanford is a son of John W. Putman and Angie Walker from Calhoun County. He is 24 AL SC SC, and his wife Mary Hagen is 19 AL. They have a four month old son John James. He was born February 4, 1856 and married Mary Hagen December 20, 1876. In 1900 he is in Etowah County with five children. In 1910 and 1920 he and Mary are in Marshall County Alabama with these children. In 1930 Sanford is still in Marshall County with his son Ervin and widowed as well. He will die December 12, 1933 in Marshall County.

He is 41 GA GA GA born Sep 1858 and his wife Mary E. is 53 AL. They have been married 28 years and have William J. 23 AL, Louisa I. 16 AL, Mary A. 9 AL, Luther T. 9 AL and George E. 8 AL. He is indexed here as Patman, and I don’t find him again. The son Luther pops up in Jefferson County Alabama in 1920 and 1930 listed as a Putman though.

 

JAMES PUTMAN  Dailys, Blount County

James Joshua Putman is a son of Andrew and Rachel Clementine and a grandson of Wilson and Susan. He is 22 AL born February 12, 1878. He is boarding with Solomon Murphree. Several member of his family have married several Murphrees for what that’s worth. He is single here through 1920, then 42 and living with his mother. He is still single in 1930, and has mother Rachel 76 with him.

 

HENRY A. (ANDREW) PUTMAN  Gum Springs, Blount County

He is a son of Reuben Ira Putman. He is 31 AL, Martha E. Ballew his wife 30 AL, and William Wesley 12 AL. He was born in January 1869. He married Martha Ballew (Ballou) in Blount County on November 14, 1886. The son William was in Blount County in 1917 to register for the draft, but I do not find him or the folks in any census after this 1900.

 

JAMES E. PUTMAN  Gum Springs, Blount County

He is a son of John Calhoun and Nancy Putman. He is 49 AL SC SC, Liza Rutherford 39 AL TN AL, Edna L. 16 AL, Lula J. 14 AL, Birdie May 13 AL, Percie L. (Percy Lee Grant) 8 AL, James R. (Rufus) 4 AL, Robert F. (Frank) 2 AL and Clitus F. 5 months AL. Clitus won’t make it till 1910. James was born in Alabama in 1850. He married Eliza Alice Rutherford here on November 8, 1877. They will remain in Blount County through 1920 when he is 68 and Eliza 59. Eliza is widowed here in 1930.

 

JOHN C. (CALHOUN) PUTMAN  Gum Springs, Blount County

He is a son of Reuben Ira Putman, 24 AL SC GA and his wife Leanna Gill is 19 AL. He was born in April 1876. He married Susan Leanna Gill in 1899. In 1910 and 1920 they are in Cullman County Alabama. He is widowed in Birmingham in 1930.

 

REUBEN IRA PUTMAN  Gum Springs, Blount County

He is now 56 SC SC SC, Mary Lou Kelly 56 GA VA GA, James Louis 18 AL, born July 14, 1881, and Wessil J. a daughter 16 AL. Mary Lou's single sister, Sarah J. Kelly 62 GA is also with them. He was born February 17, 1844 in the Laurens District of South Carolina. He married Mary Lou Kelly from Georgia on April 20, 1865. He will die here September 7, 1908. Mary is here in 1910 and 1920. She will die on February 16, 1921.

 

ANDREW J. (JACKSON) PUTMAN  Hardwick, Blount County

He is a son of Wilson Putman and Susan Hullett. He is 43 AL NC NC, Rachel Pierce is 45 GA, John Thomas 19 AL (born March 17, 1880), Ulysses Sylvester 17 AL (born January 9, 1882), Leonia 13 AL (born in 1886), William Henry 11 AL (born April 28, 1888), Columbus 7 AL (born August 12, 1894), Clifton Pierce 5 AL (born September 14, 1895). Andrew was born in 1857 in Blount County Alabama. He married Rachel Clementine Pierce in Blount County on May 11, 1877. They were living with his parents in 1880. He will die here in a few years on November 5, 1903, and Rachel is widowed here through the 1930 at age 76. She was born in Georgia on March 18, 1852 and will die here July 1, 1934. Most of the kids are around the area through the 1930, but William Henry will marry a gal named Flourine Buckner and be in Scurry County Texas by 1910. He will be there in Mitchell County by 1930 and will die there April 5, 1950.

 

BENJAMIN M. (MILLER) PUTMAN  Hardwick, Blount County

He is 17 AL and boarding with John Clement. He is a son of the above Andrew. He was born February 19, 1884. He will marry Josephine Margaret Brown in 1908. In 1910 there are no children and by 1920 Josie is back with her parents. And in 1920, Ben has a new wife Margaret and two kids. Same in1930. Got a divorce it seems.

 

GEORGE WASHINGTON PUTMAN  Pocahontas, Blount County

Wilson Putman and Susan Hullett's son is 45 AL, his wife Mary Elizabeth Ellis is 48 and Monroe Ellis is 17. I don’t find any of then in 1910, but the son Monroe will marry a Georgia Ann in 1908 and they are in Jefferson County Alabama in 1920 and 1930.

 

JOHN W. (WESLEY) PUTMAN  Pocahontas, Blount County

He is John C. and Nancy Putman's son. He is 52 AL SC SC, Mary J. (Millie Holly) is 45 AL AL AL. They have been married 28 years, and have Ella 15 AL and Arthur J. 9 AL. He was born in January 1848 in Alabama. He married Milly Angeline Holly January 19, 1871. They will be here through 1920. He died October 15, 1921.

 

R. (RICHARD) LANDER PUTMAN  Pocahontas, Blount County

He is Richard Lander, he was listed as Arlander in 1880. He is a son of John Wesley and Millie Putman and lives either with them or next door. He is 27 AL AL AL, Charlotte 27 AL, Irene 3 AL and Dina 1 month AL. They have been married 4 years. He was born October 18, 1870, and died January 5, 1944. His wife Charlotte, I believe her last name was Harris, was born in May 1871 and died November 24, 1925. In 1910 it appears that her dad William Harris age 71 has a brand new wife and lives either with them or next to them. They are in Gum Springs, Blount County in 1910 and 1920 and then he is in Marshall County in 1930 with a brand new wife Ida.

 

ELIZABETH PUTMAN  Duke, Calhoun County

She is 34 AL and listed as a daughter of William Duke. She is Mary Elizabeth Duke, and she was married to James Van Putman. He was a son of John W. Putman and Angie Walker from here in Calhoun County. James now has his own listing with his new wife Ella Brown in Marion County. They must have been divorced. Also listed in the Duke home are Leroy Putman 12 AL and Lula Putman 11 AL who are his and Elizabeth's two kids. She and Leroy are still here with her folks in 1910. By 1920 Roy is married to Jessie M. Ford and they are in Etowah County and in 1930 Mary Elizabeth is there with them as well.

 

SARAH PUTMAN  Anniston, Calhoun County

Sarah McArry is the widow of John Putman and was here in 1880. She is 47 AL, Foster now listed as a daughter 21 AL, Claudius 12 AL and a nephew George McArry 21 AL. There was an Elizabeth McArry (then 27) with them in 1880. I believe her full name is Sarah Texanna McArry. They were married in Calhoun County on August 15, 1872.

 

THOMAS M. (MONROE) PUTMAN  Ladiga, Calhoun County

He is 23 AL AL AL, Lettie Ollie Williams, his wife, 22 GA, William David 2 AL and Annie May 1 AL. He is a miner of iron ore, and a son of Silas Cass Putman and Nancy Meadows from Cleburne County. He was born May 6, 1876 and died July 18, 1934. He married Lettie Ollie Williams in Cherokee County Alabama on August 22, 1896. She was born February 16, 1878 and died May 25, 1950. They will head over to Haralson County Georgia in a few years and be there in 1910 and 1920 and then back here in Calhoun County by 1930.

 

WILLIAM S. (SILAS) PUTNAM  Ladiga, Calhoun County

He is 19 AL AL AL, Elizabeth Williams his wife 21 GA GA SC and they have Julia B. 2 AL. He is another of Silas Cass Putman's kids. He is an iron ore miner like his brother Thomas. His wife is Elizabeth Williams. They were married in Cherokee County on January 3, 1897. She will die in 1901, and he will marry Fannie Wilson Stephenson on August 17, 1902. He died January 1, 1916. Fannie then married Charles Ayers and were in Calhoun County in 1920 with her children. Charley later deserted her and the kids. Fannie and the kids are in Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1930./

 

UPSTON PATMAN (PUTMAN)  Ohatchie, Calhoun County

He is now listed 76 SC SC SC and his wife Gilly Croft is listed as Mary 75 SC SC SC. Just a bad transcribing, same folks. They were in St. Clair County in 1880. And remember he may not be a Putman.

 

SAMUEL T. PUTMAN  Arbacoochee, Cleburne County

He is 39 (really only 29) NC NC NC born Jan 1871 (this is correct), Martha Delaney Stevens, his wife, 32 AL AL AL born Apr 1868, and Vera M. 4 AL August 1895, Fred W. 2 AL Oct 1897 and David D. 1 AL May 1899. He is a son of Lorenzo Dow Putman and Margaret Ann Forbes from Cleveland County North Carolina. He does not live that close to the others in this county. They will soon head to Texas and be in McLennan County by 1910 and be there through 1930 at least.

 

G. E. (GEORGE ELZA) PUTMAN  Borden Springs, Cleburne County

He is a son of Thomas Monroe and Martha Putman from Cherokee County in 1880. He is 39 AL KY SC and his wife Mary Ann Cooley 40 AL, A. P. (Pearl) 15 AL, J.B. (Burch) 13 AL, J. Milton 11 AL, Sarah Willie 9 AL, Millie V. (Viola) 7 AL, George Lee 4 AL, Charles L. 2 AL. He was born February 4, 1861. He is here in Cleburne County through 1930. He married Mary Ann Cooley about 1883. She was born June 9, 1859 and died August 9, 1933. George died October 28, 1933.

 

I. T. (ISAAC THOMAS) PUTMAN  Borden Springs, Cleburne County

He is Isaac Thomas Putman another son of Thomas Monroe Putman and Martha Jane Thomas. He is 43 AL KY SC, his wife Mary Susan Wheeler is 35 AL, kids are William Howard 14, John Campbell 12, C. W. 9, Monroe Anderson 7, Lula Mae 4, Byron Eugene 2. He was born August 11, 1856 and died in Fulton County Georgia in April 1925. His wife is Mary Susan Wheeler, born March 26, 1865 and died October 7, 1928 also in Fulton County.

 

J. H. (JAMES HIRAM) PUTMAN  Borden Springs, Cleburne County

He is 49 AL KY SC a son of Thomas Monroe Putman and Martha Jane Thomas. His wife Elizabeth is 48 AL VA GA. Also there are Frances Boatner 23 AL and her daughter Della 1 AL. Frances was listed as Mary in the 1880 census, she is a daughter. She married Robert Boatner on September 18, 1892 and now may be a widow. He lives with his mother Martha.

 

M. J. (MARTHA JANE) PUTMAN  Borden Springs, Cleburne County

She is Martha Jane Thomas, widow of Thomas Monroe Putman. She is alone and 70 SC. Thomas was a son of Hiram Putman and Loamy Mercer. They were here in 1860 and 1870 (though not listed). He died December 16, 1872 and she has been widowed here ever since.

 

M. (MONROE) W. PUTMAN  Borden Springs, Cleburne County

This is Monroe Putman, son of the above James Hiram Putman who he is living with. He is 27 AL AL AL born May 1873, his wife M. E. (Mary Elizabeth) is 29 AL Aug 1870. Children are James E. 8 AL, B.M. (Bluford Monroe) 6 AL and M. M. (Minnie M.) 3 AL Dec 1896. He used the nickname Manse Putman.

 

S. C. (SILAS CASS) PUTMAN  Borden Springs, Cleburne County

This is yet another son of Thomas Monroe Putman. Silas Cass Putman is 51 AL KY SC. In 1880 his wife was Nancy Meadows who died in the 1890s. He married Margaret Hester Wheeler 40 AL in 1895, and they have a child G. A. (George Alexander) 2 AL. Also there is Jeff Palmer 18 AL from Margaret’s first marriage to Jeffrey Palmer Senior. He is listed as a servant, but is a stepson.

 

SANFORD S. (SIMEON) PUTMAN  Phillips, Etowah County

He is John W. Putman's son and has moved from St. Clair County. He is now 44 AL AL SC Mar 1856, Mary Hagens 39 AL Jul 1860, Homer 20 AL (listed John James Homer in 1880) born February 26, 1880, Minnie 15 AL Mar 1885, Bertha 12 AL Dec 1887, William Henry 6 AL born March 13, 1894 and Ervin Hagens 3 AL born November 28, 1897. He was born February 4, 1856 and married Mary Hagen December 20, 1876. He will die December 12, 1933. In 1910 and 1920 he and Mary are in Marshall County Alabama with these children. In 1930 Sanford is still in Marshall County with his son Ervin and is widowed then.

 

WILLIAM PUTMAN  Alabama City, Etowah County

He is 22 GA SC SC, single and boarding with Walter Thompson. He is William Ira born March 14, 1879, son of Reuben Ira Putman and Mary Lou Kelley. He has been in Blount County in 1880. He is in Etowah County in 1900 through 1930. He will marry Margaret (Maggie) Riley in Etowah County on September 6, 1903.

 

WILLIAM D. (WALTER DEFORREST) PUTNAM  Fayette, Fayette County

He is 30 IL CT ENG, Minnie Lee Brown 30 AL GA AL and they have a daughter Minnie Lee age 2 AL. He will be here through the 1930 census. He is a son of John Putnam and Eliza Sandow and was born in Jo Daviess County Illinois. He married Minnie here January 12, 1892. His dad was from Berkshire County Massachusetts and Connecticut before that.

 

MARGARY A. PUTMAN  Collins, Jackson County

She is not listed with an age, but was born in AL. She has her 18 year old daughter Martha E. Putman AL TN AL born Feb 1882 with her. They are living with Robert and Isabella Hinshaw. Isabella is her sister. I don’t know who she was married to.

 

MARY J. (JANE) PUTMAN  Hollytree, Jackson County

She is Mary Jane Cochran 35 AL VA NC born Jan 1865, the widow of John Putman. John's parents were Jesse and Ersula Freeman Putman. John was born May 1, 1863. He married Mary Jane Cochran in Princeton on September 3, 1883. Mary Jane was born January 1, 1865. They remained in Princeton, Jackson County all their lives. John died January 29, 1900. Mary Jane will die on August 17, 1904. Both are buried at the Clay Cemetery. She has William T. (Thomas) 15 AL AL AL born June 12, 1884, Joseph O. (Oscar) 14 AL bon February 1886, Alex H. (Harvey Alexander) 12 AL born July 27, 1887, Posey C. (Coplin) 10 AL born August 4, 1889, Martha J. (Jane) 9 AL born May 1891, Richard M. (Mack) 6AL born June 15, 1893. Then there is Bettie Putman 46 listed as sister in law, and two brothers in laws George W. Putman 35 and James R. Putman 32. James is a brother of John, and Bettie is a sister. She was born December 24, 1862 and died in Princeton, Jackson County on March 20, 1945. Betty never married. I am listing the two guys separately.

 

GEORGE W. (WILSON) PUTMAN  Hollytree, Jackson County

He is age 35 AL AL AL living with his sister in law Mary Jane above. He is another son of Jesse and Ersula and was born in 1864. Don’t think he ever married and I don’t find him after this.

 

JAMES R. (RICHARD) PUTMAN  Hollytree, Jackson County

Another brother, age 32, living with his sister in law Mary above. He was born March 17, 1867 in Jackson County. He married Margaret E. Robertson on January 17, 1895. Margaret was born October 25, 1873. They had a set of twin boys and Margaret died the next day of complications on July 31, 1896.  Both boys died August 28 and 29, 1896. Not a good summer. James will die here June 25, 1901. Both are buried in the Clay Cemetery in Princeton.

 

BENJAMIN F. (FRANKLIN) PUTMAN  Paint Rock, Jackson County

He is 25 AL TN AL. His wife Laura B. Edwards is 27 AL and Elna 1 AL. He is a son of William Putman (son of Morris Putman) and Elizabeth Myers. He was born here March 6, 1875. His Mom is next door with his brother and sister. He and Laura were married here December 31, 1898. He is a clerk in a general store.

 

CHRISTOPHER M. (MORRIS) PUTMAN  Trenton, Jackson County

He is 22 AL, Ellie M. 25 AL and mom, Elizabeth E. (Myers) Putman 63 AL is with them. She wasn’t in the 1880 census. She is the widow of William Putman who died here August 6, 1877. I don’t find her after this census. Chris will be in Curry County New Mexico in 1910.

 

HENRY E. (EDWARD) PUTMAN  Trenton, Jackson County

He is 34 AL and lives next to his brother Christopher. His wife is Bellezora Robinson 22 AL. More of William and Elizabeth's brood. Henry was born here April 1, 1866. He and Belle were just married in Jackson County on December 6, 1899. He will die in Huntsville, Madison County December 27, 1919. Belle will be widowed there until she dies February 2, 1933.

 

EDWARD J. PUTMAN  Birmingham, Jefferson County

He is 34 OH CAN MI Nov 1865, his wife Anita 22 LA LA LA. They are boarding with William Morris, and have a seven months old son, Edward N. Putman born AL. He sells building supplies. His father back in Ohio is a lumber dealer. He is a son of John W. and Emma Putman and was in Cleveland in 1870 and 1880. John’s parents were Martin Mulford Putman and Elizabeth Barnes from Norfolk Ontario. He was at home there in 1851. This is a Dutch line out of New York.

 

JOHN G. (GRAHAM) PUTMAN  Birmingham, Jefferson County

He is 40 TN AL VA, Annette Godfrey 36 IN FRA FRA, Graham J. (John Jr.) 13 AL, Ferdinand 11 AL, Virginia 4 AL and Godfrey (Leon Godfrey) 1 AL. Also there are her father Leon Godfrey 70 France and his brother William Putman 36 TN. He is a son of John Covington Putman and Elizabeth Graham from Maury County Tennessee. John Senior was a son of John Putman and Lucy Covington from Rutherford County North Carolina who moved to Tennessee and then Morgan County Alabama. John and Annette are here through the 1930, and probably the rest of their life. His brother, William Crutchfield Putman, will return soon to Tennessee. William was born January 14, 1865 and died unmarried September 19, 1942 in Coffee County Tennessee.

He is Hiram Putman's son. He is now 24 AL AL AL April 19, 1876 (actually 1878) and his wife Victoria Robbins is 20 AL Nov 1880. He was born April 19, 1878. He is in Walker County in 1910 and in Birmingham, Jefferson County in 1920 and 1930. His wife is Martha Victoria Robbins. He died December 23, 1949.

 

HIRAM (ALEXANDER) PUTMAN  Precinct 6, Jefferson County

Hiram is a son of Simeon S. Putman. He is 48 AL KY SC January 3, 1852, Mary Elizabeth Hollis is 38 AL April 27, 1862, Adolphus Simeon 18 AL Oct 1881, William Ollis 15 AL born November 11, 1884, David Lawrence 12 AL born April 26, 1888, Travis Oscar 7 AL born April 27, 1893, and Arthur H. 4 AL born November 7, 1895. He was was born January 3, 1852. He married Mary Elizabeth Hollis on March 29, 1877 in Jefferson County Alabama. Mary Elizabeth was born April 27, 1862. She was a daughter of Thomas Jefferson Hollis and Elizabeth Jane Black. He died in Jefferson County on October 13, 1936.

 

MILLIE PUTMAN  Precinct 6, Jefferson County

This is Millie Howle Putman, the widow of Simon S. Putman. She is now 74 SC and listed as mother in law in the home of her daughter Martha 49 AL and her husband Elijah Hollis 52 AL.  There are 3 other Hollis families on this page. Simeon was a son of Hiram Putman and Loamy Mercer from South Carolina. He died in Jefferson County Alabama on September 19, 1860. Millie will die in about 1905 at almost 80 years of age.

 

WILLIAM F. (FRANK) PUTMAN  Precinct 13, Jefferson County

He is a son of John W. Putman and Angie Walker and was born in Calhoun County. He is a farmer 38 AL AL AL, born August 29, 1862, Minnie Brown his wife is 24 AL, born July 1876, and they have Angie 7, Emmie 3, George B. 1, born September 1898. He married Minnie Brown in Etowah County on January 12, 1892. They are in Marshall County next in 1910 and in Etowah County by 1930.

 

FRANK M. PUTMAN  Precinct 22, Jefferson County

He is Francis M. Putman, son of William A. and Eliza Jane Putman from Lawrence County. He is a farmer 42 AL AL AL, Annie E. McDaniel his wife is 37 AL and her sister Florence McDaniel 18 AL is with them. Frank married Annie E. McDaniel in Morgan County on November 26, 1882.

 

CICERO PUTMAN  Precinct 29, Jefferson County

He is Dudley Cicero Putman 22 AL SC AL Dec 1877, single and boarding with John Gibson and a bunch of others. He is a guard at the Alabama State Prison here. He is a son of Joel Putman and his second wife Malinda Sanson from St. Clair County. His dad has died April 26, 1891, and his mom is in St. Clair County now and will soon be in Texas with her son Meredith. Dudley is also listed there now in 1900. He married a Conners girl in about 1902, she died and in 1910 a son Cicero is with her parents in Hill County and this Dudley Cicero will have a new wife Nora and be in Muskogee County Oklahoma by 1910. He is a dentist then.

 

FRANK PUTMAN  Cross Roads, Lauderdale County

He is the George F. listed as a son with Zedoc Putman in 1880. He is 21 AL and now listed as a nephew with John Weems. His brother James Isaac is also there. 'Ike' had married Mary Elizabeth Weems. George Frank was born, according to his tombstone in Limestone County Alabama, in 1877 and died in 1948. According to a relative he then married Lula May Elders, born June 26, 1881, and went to Texas. He was in Collin County Texas in 1910. Lula May died in childbirth November 11, 1917, and he then married Rosie King and returned to Limestone County Alabama. She was born in Texas in about 1902.

 

GEORGE WASHINGTON PUTMAN  Cross Roads, Lauderdale County

He is now 44, Mary Elizabeth Thornton is 44, William Sherwood 19 born April 17, 1881, Mittie 15, George Garvin 14 born January 21, 1886, Thomas P. 10 born November 2, 1887, Eugene D. 5 and Jesse O. 3 (born April 8, 1897). He is a son of Francis and Polly Putman and grandson of Bazel Putman. He was born in June 1855. They are still in Lauderdale County in 1910 and 1920. He is widowed by 1930 and living with his son Thomas.

 

JAMES I. (ISAAC) PUTMAN  Cross Roads, Lauderdale County

He is 47 AL SC SC born in 1853, his wife Louise Belle is 40 TN. They have been married 25 years and have Lucian L. 9 AL born July 1891 and Emma 5 AL born March 1895. He is a son of Bazel Putman and was born here. He was married to Belle here in 1880. I do not find them again, but Lucian is here in 1920.

 

JAMES I. (ISAAC) PUTMAN  Cross Roads, Lauderdale County

He is a son of Zedoc Putman from Giles County Tennessee. He is listed without an age as a son in law of John and Linia Weems. He was born, according to his tombstone, October 15, 1881 in Lauderdale County and died December 15, 1955 in Limestone County. According to his WWI registration, he is listed as being born on October 1, 1876. He married Mary Elizabeth Weems about 1899 or early 1900. She was born in June 1882 and died soon after they were married. He then married Lillie Mae King in about 1906. According to her tombstone, she was born March 13, 1887 and died December 24, 1956. They are in Limestone County in 1910, but I don't find their listing for 1920.They were shown in 1930 in Athens, Limestone County. His brother George Frank Putman 21 AL is here as well.

 

(GEORGE) FRANK PUTMAN  Cross Roads, Lauderdale County

He is living with his brother James (above) with the Weems family. He was born, according to his tombstone in Limestone County Alabama, in 1877 and died in 1948. According to a relative, Jesse Putman, he will marry Lula May Elders, born June 26, 1881, and went to Texas. They are in Collin County Texas in 1910. Lula May died in childbirth November 11, 1917, and he then married Rosie King and returned to Limestone County Alabama. She was born in Texas in about 1902. They are back here in 1930.

 

NANCY A. PUTMAN  Cross Roads, Lauderdale County

She is age 59 AL NC SC Oct 1840 listed as a sister of Susanna Crony. She is Nancy Croney the second wife and now widow of Zedok Putman. They were married here in 1885.

 

MILES R. (RICHARD) PUTMAN  Green Hill, Lauderdale County

Abel's son is now 48 AL AL AL, Susan Jane Sledge 46 TN, Andrew 18 AL Dec 1883, James M. 16 AL Nov 1893, Frances E. 14 AL Jan 1896, Elenora 12 AL May 1888, Annie 8 AL Jan 1892, John D. 6 AL September 30, 1894, Lillian 4 Al Mar 1896, Lola E. 2 AL Mar 1898. He is a son of Abel Putman and Nancy Cox and was born June 6, 1851. He married Susan Jane Sledge on January 10, 1873. She was born July 26, 1858. Susan will die April 1, 1904, and Miles married Anna Liles January 9, 1906. In 1910 she is called Anna, and called Indiana in 1920. They aren’t in the 1930 census.

 

ABEL F. (FRANKLIN) PUTMAN  Lexington, Lauderdale County

He was listed as Franklin in 1880. He is Abel and Nancy Cox Putman's son, 26 AL and Masalla (Mace Ella Campbell) 23 AL, James C. (Collins) 3 AL born September 24, 1896, Lessie L. (Lou) 2 AL born April 1898 and Hartwell F. (Franklin) born April 25, 1900. Thomas Cox and family, and Charlie and Bessis Cox and family live next door and would be related to his mom. Franklin was born September 14 1873 and died in Lexington, Lauderdale County on October 2, 1954. He married Mace Ella Campbell in Lauderdale County on October 17, 1895. She was born February 23, 1877 and died October 4, 1929. Frank then married Georgia Lula Williams Swinea on April 27, 1932. They were divorced October 9, 1933. Frank later changed his name to Frank R. Putman.

 

JESSE PUTMAN  Lexington, Lauderdale County

Abel Putman's son is 29 AL TN AL, Elizabeth S. Lanier 29 AL AL AL, Nettie A. 7 AL, Clarence E. 5 AL born August 3, 1894, Hattie L. 3 AL, Lola M. 1 AL. Also there is Nancy Cox Putman, his mother, age 72 AL. Jesse was born October 6, 1870 and died in Lauderdale County November 14, 1955. He married Elizabeth S. 'Lizzie' Lanier in Lauderdale County on October 26, 1891. She was born October 8, 1870 and died November 22, 1935. They are in Lauderdale County through 1930 and later. Abel was a son of Bazel Putman and his first wife. Abel died February 18, 1895. Nancy will die here January 3, 1916.

 

JESSE THOMAS PUTMAN  Lexington, Lauderdale County

He is 26 AL, Mary E. Matthews 23 AL and William D. born July 30, 1899. He is Miles son. He was born February 15, 1874. He married Mary Elizabeth Mathews here on March 17, 1897. They are here through 1920 and then over in Lexington by 1930.

 

SARAH PUTMAN  Moulton, Lawrence County

She is 79 SC listed as a mother in law of Marshall Norton 46 AL and his wife Martha Ann 46 AL KY SC. She is Sarah Teague, the widow of Simeon Howard Putman. He was a son of Simeon Putman and Peggy Mercer. They were in Calhoun County and then Talladega in 1860 and Cleburne County in 1870 and Marion County in 1880. Simeon died there November 1, 1888.

 

WILLIAM H. PUTNAM  Lee County

He is a son of John William Putnam and Eugenia Jackson grandson of Hosea Putnam from Muscogee County Georgia. He is 29 AL, Nannie Hanson 22 AL and they have Willie E. 3 and Roy L. 1. He was born in 1870 in Russell County Alabama and was there till now. Wish I knew who Hosea belonged to though. Think just a single late arrival to America.

 

JAMES PUTMAN  Limestone County

He is 17 AL boarding with Frank Scroggins.

 

MARY PUTMAN  Limestone County

She is 60 AL born Apr 1840 living as an aunt with James Reese. She is most likely the Polly who was listed in Lauderdale County in 1880 with four kids and no husband. Nancy Reese is surely a Putman as well. It is the Reese connection in both years that makes this a good guess. Nancy was with Malinda, Sarah and Isaac in 1880 and is still here in 1900. Polly was very near by in 1880.

 

RICHARD R. PUTMAN  Pettusville, Limestone County

He is listed as Dick 45 AL TN TN Aug 1855, his wife Mira Pluten his wife is 45 TN May 1855, Lulu 11 TN Sep 1888 and Samuel 9 AL born October 1, 1891. He is a son of Samuel and Mary Ann Call. He and his brother Sam all live with his folks it seems or next door. He was born August 15, 1856 and died April 2, 1947. He married Palmira Pluten in Giles County Tennessee on December 24, 1887. She was born October 6, 1859 and died January 14, 1931. They are here till then

 

SAMUEL PUTMAN  Pettusville, Limestone County

He is the son of the next Samuel. This one is 30 TN Sep 1870, Annie Daly his wife 22 AL Aug 1877, Mattie 6 TN Jan 1894, Richard 3 TN born May 1, 1897, and Earl 1 TN born August 25, 1900. His wife is Anne Daly, they were married December 25, 1892. Her widowed dad George Washington Daly 56 AL and several brothers live next door. They are all farmers. They are here through the 1920 census, and in Dyer County Tennessee in 1930.

 

SAMUEL R. PUTMAN  Pettusville, Limestone County

He is 67 TN born October 1832 and his wife Mary Ann Call his wife 67 TN born September 1832 and a daughter Lizzie 19 TN Dec 1880. He is Bazel Putman's son. Sam was born October 6, 1832 in Tennessee. He married Mary Ann Call in Lawrence County Tennessee on June 21, 1852. Mary Ann was born October 6, 1833 in Tennessee. He was in Giles County Tennessee in 1870 along with his father and brother. I do not find them in either Tennessee or Alabama in 1880. In 1910, Samuel is 77 years old and living in Madison County with his eldest son Emmet Putman and that family. Samuel died in Madison County (possibly Limestone County) on September 6, 1914. There is a Mary Putman age 76 in Madison County in 1910 living or at least listed with a G. John Erwin. She might be Mary Ann Call, not certain. At any rate, Mary Ann died May 6, 1913 in Madison County Alabama. They are buried in the Pettusville Cemetery there.

 

JAMES PUTMAN  Pettusville, Limestone County

He is 18 AL TN AL, single and boarding with a Scoggins family next door to Sam and Mary Ann Putman. He is James Thomas Putman, a son of Emmet Miles Putman from here, and was born in Tennessee March 8, 1877. He married Lee Alexander in Limestone County on April 20, 1898. She must have died shortly thereafter or they split or something as he is single now. He will marry Viola Brown here in about 1906, and they moved to Texas. They are in Hunt County Texas in 1910. In 1920 and 1930 he is back here in Limestone County with Viola.

 

JOHN PUTMAN  Bexar, Marion County

He is John W. listed in Calhoun County in 1880. He is a son of Reuben Putman. John was born in Laurens County South Carolina September 4, 1831. In St. Clair County Alabama, he married Angie Frances Walker on April 13, 1852. Angie was born in South Carolina on August 15, 1831. He came with his folks to Benton County and remained there after he was married. He served in the Alabama Infantry in the Civil War and was wounded in the right leg in the battle of Jonesboro, Georgia in 1864. They remained in Benton, and were there as it changed name to Calhoun County. Angie died there September 12, 1888 and John will die here November 29, 1907. Both are buried at Ten Island Cemetery in Ohatchee, Alabama. He is now 68 SC. He is listed as father in law of Joseph Brown who married his daughter Nancy 25 AL.

 

VAN PUTMAN  Camp, Marion County                                                

He is James Van Putman and a son of the above John and Angie Putman. He is 34 AL AL AL born September 1865, Ellen Brown, his second wife, is 22 AL, Jessie May 1 AL and Sonie C. a daughter 2 months AL. He has been married to Ellen 2 years. His other children are with his first wife Elizabeth Duke, and are listed in Calhoun County. He was born September 3, 1864. His first marriage must have ended in divorce. He died June 3, 1944, in a train accident I believe. In 1920 Van is in Marion County with wife Ella Brown and the last three children. They are in Walker County in 1930.

 

MARTIN M. PUTMAN  Cranford, Marshall County

This is Martin and Huldy Putman's son Martin Marion. He is 50 AL, Mary E. Mabry his wife 46 GA. There are also Samuel Marcus Putman 20 AL, Edna M. Putman 16 AL and Mary Jane Putman 13 AR. Martin never had children. These three kids are children of William Putman, his brother, and Manilla Aldridge who both have died. He was born here in April 9, 1850. He married Mary E. Mabry on August 31, 1879. He remained in Marshall County until he died April 21, 1922.

 

ZEDIAH PUTMAN  Cranford, Marshall County

He is 25 AL living with Sarah Brown as a boarder. He is a son of Zedock and Margaret Putman. His full name is Zadoc Lina Putman born February 6, 1875 according to the WWI registrations. He was here with his widowed mother in 1880.

 

JAMES H. PUTMAN  New Decatur, Morgan County

He was listed as a nephew of Elizabeth Putman in 1880. His folks were John and Adelia Putman. Anyway, he is 36 AL AL AL, Minnie Copeland Barnes is 32 AL, Prentiss G. 11 AL and Theodore E. 1 AL. They are here in 1910.

 

JOHN W. PUTNAM  Girard, Russell County

He is 53 GA, Eugenia 50 AL, Charlie (Charles Bradford born March 3, 1876) 24, John R. 22, and Jack (Colby Jackson born July 5, 1885) 14. Also there is Minnie E. Fletcher 26 a daughter. He was here in 1880. He is a son of Hosea Putnam. He was born in 1846 in Muscogee County Georgia. He moved to Russell County Alabama and there married Eugenia Jane Jackson on November 21, 1867. They were here in the 1870, 1880 and 1900 census returns. In 1910 and 1920, he is in Lee County Alabama. Eugenia is alive in 1910, but in 1920 he is 75 and has a new 41 year old wife named Florence.

 

JOHN W. (WILLIAM) PUTMAN  Ashville, St. Clair County

He is a son of Joel A. Putman and Narcissa Coker (their last child before she died in the early 1860s, and Joel later married Malinda Sanson here on March 6, 1864). He was born in September 1862. He is 38 AL, Elizabeth Ann Tankersley is 40 GA, Annie R. 17 GA, Lucie (Lucious) M. 11 AL, Louis (Lewis) 11 AL, Myrtle 8 AL and Ella M. 5 AL. Lucious and Lewis are twin boys born February 22, 1888. They were just married in Spaulding County Georgia in the 1880 Census. Elizabeth will die May 12, 1906. John will marry Willie E. Davis (widow of a Thelman guy) in 1909. Willie was born October 4, 1874 and died June 4, 1946. John and Willie are here in 1910, 1920 and 1930. John died November 3, 1933 in St. Clair County Willie not till 1946.

 

LUTHER PUTMAN  Ashville, St. Clair County

He is 20 AL SC GA and a hired man with Perry Moore. He will be marrying Maude Brewster here September 21, 1902, and will next pop up in Palo Pinto County Texas in 1910, and then Tarrant County Texas in 1920. He is a son of Joel A. Putman and Malinda Sanson.

 

MALINDA A. PUTMAN  Ashville, St. Clair County

This is Malinda Ann Sanson, Joel Putman's widow. She is 60 GA Nov 1839, living as the mother in law of Joseph Lowrey. His wife, Frances Lowrey is a daughter of Joel and Malinda. Her son William is here as well, see his listing coming up. Joel was a son of Reuben and Lucinda Putman. He married Narcissa Coker on March 8, 1848 in St. Clair County Alabama. Narcissa died in the early 1860s and Joel then married Malinda Ann Sanson in St. Clair County on March 6, 1864. Malinda was born in Georgia on November 15, 1839. Joel died here in St. Clair County on April 26, 1891 and Malinda will die on February 27, 1913 in Caddo County Oklahoma while visiting her son Claude. Her body was returned to St. Clair County for burial.

 

WILLIAM B. PUTMAN  Ashville, St. Clair County

Joel's son is 28 AL SC GA born Feb 1872, and listed as a brother in law of Joseph A. Lowrey, Mom is there too and listed above.

 

MEREDITH PUTMAN  Steels Depot, St. Clair County

He is a son of Joel and Malinda. He is now 33 AL SC GA, Belle Edmondson his wife of 10 years is 27 AL, Algernon 9 AL, Juel (Jewel ?) a daughter 7 AL, Everett 4 TX and Pauline 1 AL. He was born October 6, 1866, and died October 30, 1949 in Oklahoma City. They are in Caddo County Oklahoma in 1910. His wife is Clara Belle Edmondson, born March 18, 1872 and died April 5, 1939 in Oklahoma City He will be in Oklahoma in 1910.

 

SALLIE PUTMAN  Greensport, St. Clair County

She is Sally Ann Jones, the wife I guess of Glen Reuben Putman, 25 AL, Abel 7 and Ella 4. Glen is a son of Joel. She married a G. R. Putman on December 24, 1891. Glen was a son of Joel Putman and Malinda Ann Sanson from here in St. Clair County. This is a lot of guess work, however. Glen is missing in this census, but pops up in 1910 in Ben Hill County Georgia with a new wife Minnie. The only G. R. I can place here would be Glen Reuben Putman. Just not at all certain, but Glen Reuben did have several wives.

 

E. PUTMAN  Brookwood, Tuscaloosa County

He is 30 AL AL AL single and boarding with Sam E. Cummings. No ideas here, he is a mechanic.

 

JOSEPH T. (JOSIAH TAYLOR) PUTMAN  Black Point, Winston County

He is 54 AL KY SC, Margaret Jane Pruitt, his wife, 56 AL, Eula 16 AL, Alberta 15 AL. He is Forester's son. He was born December 19, 1844. He married Margaret Jane Pruitt in Benton/Calhoun County Alabama on December 20, 1866. She was born August 27, 1844 in Benton County. He and Margaret are in Calhoun County in the 1870 census and in Etowah County Alabama in 1880. In 1900 on they are in Winston County. Joe died April 10, 1917. I don't know when Margaret died, but both were missing in 1920. There was a Margaret Putman the right age (78) in Erath County Texas in the 1920 census. This may well be her. Perhaps a daughter had headed out that way. He and Margaret have moved from Etowah County with the two youngest kids. They will be here in Winston County the rest of their lives.
