ALABAMA 1930 CENSUS

 

WAYNE PUTMAN  Loxley, Baldwin County

He is 13 AL and lives with his mother’s parents Michael and Eunice McMurray. He is Robert Wayne Putman, a son of Frank Robert Putman and Lois McMurray and was born in Blountsville, Blount County Alabama August 15, 1916. He is in Escambia County Florida in 1935 with another McMurray family. He is married in Lyon, Lewis County Missouri in 1940. He will be in Cullman County Alabama and will die in a hospital in Birmingham, Alabama September 1, 1958.

 

CECIL B. (BRAXTON) PUTMAN  Gum Springs, Blount County

He is 21 AL AL AL born July 7, 1908 and will die in Birmingham March 10, 1996. He has his own farm. His wife Estelle Bertha Aldridge is 23 AL. They have been married 2 years. Richard Lander’s son still has the old farm. His brothers and sisters are here too and listed next. They are kids of Richard Lander Putman. His wife Charlotte Harris died in 1925. He just took off I guess and went to Marshall County and married a new gal. They are there now, and the kids stuck here. They are in Birmingham by 1940.

 

BONNIE, WOODROW & JAMES PUTMAN  Gum Springs, Blount County

They are more kids of Richard Lander Putman from here. She is 24 AL and single. She was born November 7, 1905 and died November 10, 1982. Her brothers Woodrow 17 AL and James V. 13 AL are with her. Vernon James was born June 1, 1916, and died April 24, 1942 in WW II. Looks like they are renting rooms from Cecil. They are listed next to each other.

 

JAMES R. (RUFUS) PUTMAN  Gum Springs, Blount County

He is 34 AL AL AL. His wife Eva E. is 26 AL and they have James R. 3 AL and Bettie J. 1 AL. His sister Marie is 26 AL. His widowed mother Eliza 69 AL is with them. Eliza Alice Rutherford was married to James E. Putman from here. They were all here in 1920. James was born December 15, 1895, and died in July 1970. His mom and then married sister Marie are here with them in 1940 as well.

 

JIM L. (JAMES LOUIS) PUTMAN  Gum Springs, Blount County

He is 48 AL AL AL and owns his farm. Bessie Moore his wife is 40 AL, Cecil E. 21 AL, Oltra 16 AL, Basel V. 13 AL Roy G. (Gordon) 11 AL and Catherine 6 AL. James is a son of Reuben Ira Putman and Mary Lou Kelly from here. His widowed mom was with them in 1920, but died in 1921. James was born July 24, 1881, and died July 21, 1959. His wife was Bessie Moore was born September 15, 1889 and died July 16, 1979.

 

BENNY (BENJAMIN MILLER) PUTMAN  Hardwick, Blount County

He is 45 AL AL GA and owns his farm. His wife Margaret is 42 AL and they have Coy 14 AL, Roy 12 AL and Horst or Hoyt 8 AL. Benjamin Miller Putman is a son of Andrew and Rachel from here. His brother Jim lives next door. He was born January 19, 1884. He married Josephine Margaret Brown or Magourik in 1908. In 1910 there were no children and in 1920 and 1930, Josie is back with her parents. It looks like he had two wives, but just not certain. Josie may be a widow of some other Putman, but Ben only started having kids 10 years after the ‘first’ marriage with the Margaret that is with him now and was in 1920. Just not sure.

 

JIM J. (JAMES JOSHUA) PUTMAN  Hardwick, Blount County

Another of Andrew and Rachel’s sons. He is 51 AL and still single as is his brother COLUMBUS PUTMAN 33 AL. Their widowed mother is still with them. Rachel Clementine Pierce is now 76 GA. She has been here since 1910 when she was first widowed. James was born February 12, 1878 and never married. Columbus was born August 12, 1894. He died in July 1973 in Oneonta, Blount County Alabama according to the social security records. I don’t know yet if he married or not.

 

EVERETT PUTMAN  Oneonta, Blount County

He is 26 AL AL AL and works an ore mine. Jessie Murphree his wife is 18 AL. They have just been married one year. He is a son of John Thomas Putman and Lucille Gulledge from Hardwick. He was born in 1905 and married Jessie in 1929.

 

JOSIE PUTMAN  Oneonta, Blount County

She is listed as 43 AL and says she is widowed as she did here in 1920. She still lives with her mom Rachel M. Brown. She may have been the first wife of Benjamin Putman who is alive and well though. They were married in 1908 and probably divorced a few years later. Benjamin has another wife Margaret in 1920 and 1930 back in Hardwick. Josie may be the first wife, Josephine Margaret Magourik, or she may be a widow of some other Putman. Just don’t know. She is here in 1940 as a housekeeper for Otis and Joanna McPherson.

 

U. S. (ULYSSES SYLVESTER) PUTMAN  Oneonta, Blount County

He is a sharecropper. He is 47 AL AL AL, Miriam Magourik his wife is 44 AL and they now have John Wesley 21 AL born in 1909, Leanna 19 AL, William Sylvester 18 AL born June 11, 1912 and died in Eutaw Alabama November 14, 1997, Clarence 16 AL born in 1915, Herschel 12 AL born in October 1908, Clifton W. 9 AL born September 16, 1920 and died in Oneonta Alabama in October 1977, Emolene 5 AL born in 1925, and Lily B. 4 AL born in 1926.  He is a son of Andrew Putman and Rachel Clementine Pierce and was born here January 9, 1882. He is originally from Hardwick, Blount County.

 

JOHN T. (THOMAS) PUTMAN  Straight Mountain, Blount County

He is now 50 AL AL AL and owns his farm. Mary Battles his second wife is 46 AL. They now have Jewell 21 AL, Revis 16 AL, Houston 13 AL, John J. 6 AL, Howard 4 AL and Milford 2 AL. His son Alton lives next door or more likely with them. He is another son of Andrew Putman. He was born March 17, 1880 on Saint Patty's Day. He was still home in 1900. He married Lucille Gulledge in about 1902 here in Blount County. He will die in May 1979 (social security index). His wife Lucy had died November 7, 1917. He was widowed in 1920 and then married Mary about 1922.

 

W. ALTON PUTMAN  Straight Mountain, Blount County

He is 24 AL and works on his dad’s farm. His wife Ida Allen is 19 AL and they have Alton 2 AL. He is a son of the above John Putman. He was born in 1907. He married Ida Allen in 1926.

 

MANCE M. (MONROE) PUTMAN  Anniston, Calhoun County

He is 56 AL and his wife Elizabeth Hanson is 60 AL and their son Wright Jay 22 AL who says he is singe but is divorced. He married Marie Haywood April 3, 1926 in Cleburne County. She is at home now in Cleburne County and uses Haywood as her last name. She is here in Anniston in 1940 by herself and then admits she is divorced. Anyway, Manse or Monroe Putman is a son of James Hiram Putman and Betty Hinson from Cherokee County.

 

THOMAS PUTNAM  Greenwood, Calhoun County

He is 29 AL US US and His wife Tracy DeRossett is also TN. Thomas Newton Putnam is a son of Isaac Thomas Putman from Cleburne County. He married Tracy Derossett in the 1920s. He and his brother Byron came over here when their folks moved up to Atlanta in 1922. The folks both died there by 1928. Tom will be with Tracy in Charleston County, South Carolina in 1940 and 1950.

 

CLAUDE PUTMAN  Ohatchie, Calhoun County

He is 42 AL AL AL. His wife Cora is 37 AL and they have Claude J. 10 AL and James 8 AL. He is a tenant farmer or sharecropper. He is a son of John L. Putman and Texanna McArry from here. They are all in Alexandria, Calhoun County in 1940.

 

BYRON PUTMAN  Piedmont, Calhoun County

Byron Eugene is a son of Isaac Thomas Putman from Cleburne County. He was home there in 1920. He is 32 AL AL AL and works in a cotton mill. His wife Lizzie (Louisa Head) is 27 AL. They have been married 10 years now, and have Lillian 7 AL and Howard 3 AL. They will have one more, Patty Sue in 1936.

 

THOMAS M. (MONROE) PUTMAN  Piedmont, Calhoun County

Well, he’s back where he started after being in Georgia for a bunch of years. They were in Haralson County Georgia in 1910 and 1920. He is 55 AL AL AL and a farm laborer paying $4.50 a month rent. Lettie Ollie Williams his wife is now 53 GA. They have at home Annie May 30 AL, Mattie 28 GA, a married daughter Ethelene Coogler 17 GA and her daughters Edna 1 5/12 AL and Betty 0/12 AL, son Volver 14 GA, daughter Flora 14 GA. Their oldest son William is back in Cleburne County Alabama now and married. He is a son of Silas Cass Putman and Nancy Meadows from Cleburne County. Thomas will die here July 18, 1934 and Ollie is widowed here in 1940

 

LEN P. PUTMAN  Lanett, Chambers County

He is 57 AL AL AL and a tenant farmer. Fannie his wife is 31 AL and they have Carrie 13 AL. This is a black family.

 

WILLIAM D. (DAVID) PUTNAM  Abernathy, Cleburne County

He is 32 AL AL AL and a farmer. His wife of 7 years, Violet Morgan is 25 GA and they have Theda E. a daughter 6 AL and William J. 1 1/12 AL. He is a son of Thomas Monroe Putman and Lettie Williams, and grandson of Silas Cass Putman. He was born August 22, 1897 and will die in Anniston Alabama in January 1967. His folks are back in Calhoun County now. They were all up in Georgia since the early 1900s.

 

GEORGE E. (ELZA) PUTMAN  Borden Springs, Cleburne County

He is 69 AL AL AL and owns his own farm. Mary Ann Cooley, his wife of 46 years, is 71 AL and they have Charles 32 AL and their widowed daughter Sarah Willie Putman 39 AL and her kids Edna 18 AL, Genevieve 16 AL, J. C. (John Campbell Jr.) 14 AL, George E. (Elza) 11 AL and a nephew Dennis L. 17 AL. Sarah had married a cousin, John Campbell Putman who died in 1919. She and the kids were here in 1920 too. Don’t know who Dennis is. George is a son of Thomas Monroe and Martha Putman. He married Mary Ann Cooley about 1883. She was born June 9, 1859 and will die August 9, 1933. George will die here October 28, 1933.

 

HENRY L. PUTNAM  Sheffield, Colbert County

He is 28 AL AL AL and a salesman for a bakery. Louisa, his wife of about 4 years, is 20 AL and they have Juanita 1 6/12 AL. He is a son of Jesse Thomas Putman and Mary Mathews. He was home in Lauderdale County in 1920.

 

HARRY R. (ROSEL) PUTMAN  Hanceville, Cullman County

He is a painter for the railroad and is 25 AL AL AL. His wife Mattie Belle Moore is 22 AL and they have Jack Harold 3 8/12 AL and Charles Frank 1 3/8 AL. He was born August 17, 1905 and will die here December 30, 1986. He married Mattie in Blount County April 11, 1925. They are here in 1940, but no idea who his folks were. There is a slight chance he is somehow related or connected to Percy Lee Putman who is listed next here in Hanceville, and was from Blount County before that.

 

PERCY L. (LEE) PUTMAN  Hanceville, Cullman County

He is 37 AL AL AL and rents a farm. His wife Mary Ethel Alldredge is 35 AL and they have been married 16 years. They now have Carter E. 16 AL, James D. (Douglas) 14 AL, Wyatt H. 13 AL, Christine 11 AL, Mary Eleanor 7 AL and Joe 2 AL. They will have another son Kenneth in the next year or so. He is a son of James Putman and Eliza Rutherford, and was born next door in Blount County May 10, 1892, and was there through the 1920. He will die here in May 1979.

 

EDWARD D. (DODGE) PUTNAM  Selma, Dallas County

He is 56 TN IL TN and a foreman in a railroad shop. Willie Martin Melton his wife is 47 MS and they have Edward D. Jr. 14 TN. He is a son of William C. Putnam and Jessie Dodge from Knox County Tennessee. He was at home there in 1880 through 1910. He married Willie there in 1914 and they were in Gibson County Indiana in 1920. New England Family

 

LUMPKIN S. (SAMUEL) PUTNAM  Selma, Dallas County

He is 35 GA GA GA. His wife Elise Bowen is 30 FL, and they have Samuel 8 AL, Mildred 4 AL and Neal 3 AL. He is a son of David Lumpkin Putman Junior and was here with his folks in 1910. His folks are from Cherokee County Georgia. His brother Odian lives next door. He is a spotter in a dry cleaning establishment. He was born back in Cherokee County Georgia January 2, 1895 and will die here in Selma in December 1963.

 

MARY I. (IDA) PUTMAN  Selma, Dallas County

She is 61 GA and widowed. Mary Ida Thompson is the widow of David Lumpkin Putman Jr. David was a son of David Lumpkin Putman and Elizabeth Jane Pierce. He was born 1862. He married Mary Jane Thompson in Cherokee County Georgia November 2, 1885, and they were here in 1910, and she was widowed here in 1920 and will be in 1940 too.

 

ODIE (ODIAN) W. PUTNAM  Selma, Dallas County

He is 39 GA GA GA and a clerk in a hotel. Mary E. his wife is 37 AL. He is also a son of David Lumpkin Putman and Mary Jane Thompson, and was here with his folks in 1910. He was born April 28, 1890.

 

DESSIE PUTNAM  Adamsburg, De Kalb County

She is 40 AL GA GA and widowed. She has Edith 17 SC, Cora 15 SC, Oline 12 SC. Odessa Martha Holbrooks was here in 1920 married to William Lee Putman. He was a son of Thomas Fowler Putman and Martha Jane Harden of South Carolina and Georgia. He was born in Habersham County Georgia in 1886. He died in 1928 in a train/car accident in Fort Payne, DeKalb County. They had Edith Clyde who married Samuel Earl Gassendaner, Clara Elizabeth who married Hoyt Milton Jacobs, and Olena Edna who married Delbert Frazer Cochran.

 

C. (CHARLES) F. PUTMAN  Pine Grove, De Kalb County

He is 44 GA GA GA and is a tenant farmer. Cora Belle Kell his wife is 43 GA and they have John Lewis 9 GA and Autrell 5 AL. Her folks John and Martha Kell are with them as they were in 1920 back in Gordon County Georgia. Charles is a son of Willie Woods Putnam and Sarah Nolan from Gordon County.

 

HENRY W. (WILLIAM) PUTMAN  Lathamville, De Kalb County

He is 26 AL AL AL and a farmer. His wife Lillian Evisa Nabors is 24 AL, and they have Marian 6 AL, Gus 5 AL and Sherman L. 3 AL. He is a son of William Frank Putman and Minnie Brown. The family was here in Jefferson County in 1900 and then in Etowah County. They are in Red Apple, Marion County in 1940.

 

WILLIAM I. (IRA) PUTMAN  Alabama City, Etowah County

He is 51 AL SC GA (born March 14, 1879 and died in August 1963), and operates a retail general merchandise store. Maggie Riley his wife is 45 TN. They have James Howard 23 AL, Frederick 21 AL and Mabel 17 AL. He is a son of Reuben Ira Putman and Mary Lou Kelly. He was born in Blount County but has been here since 1900. He and his kids are in Gadsden by 1935 and are there in 1940.

 

ROY B. (BRAXTON) PUTMAN  Attalla, Etowah County

He is 41 AL AL AL and drives a crane at a steel factory. Jessie M. Ford his wife is 36 AL and they have Mary Frances 11 AL and Elinor Inez 8 AL. His ‘widowed’ mother Mary Elizabeth Duke 64 AL is with them. He is a son of James Van Putman and his first wife Mary Elizabeth Duke. His folks were divorced in the 1890s. He was with his mother and her folks in Duke, Calhoun County in 1900 and 1910 listed as Leroy. He and Jessie were here in 1920. Roy was born August 28, 1887. Mary Duke was born September 30, 1866.

 

GLOVER B. (BRANSTON) PUTMAN  Chandler, Etowah County

He is 32 AL AL AL and is a tenant farmer. His wife Minnie Casey is 33 AL and they have Edward 8 AL. Her widowed mother Jane Casey 74 AL is with them. He is the eldest son of the following William Frank Putman. He was born back in Marshall County September 29, 1898, and died April 1971. He married Willamena Casey. A relative gives her name as Casson, but now her mother is with them and spells the name Casey.

 

W. (WILLIAM) FRANK PUTMAN  Chandler, Etowah County

He is now 64 AL SC AL and is a tenant farmer. Minnie Brown his wife is 54 AL and they have at home William A. (actually a daughter Willie Mae) 18 AL, John F. 17 AL, Opal M. 14 AL, Mary L. 12 AL. Also here are a grandson William C. 1 3/12 AL, and his sister Zannie 68 AL and her husband Branson Davis 70 AL. He is a son of John W. Putman and Angela Frances Walker from South Carolina and then Calhoun County Alabama. He was born August 29, 1862 and married Minnie Brown January 12, 1892 in Etowah County. He died March 5, 1947 in Etowah County Alabama. Minnie died there on February 20, 1947. They were in Jefferson County Alabama in 1900. In 1910 they were in Marshall County.

 

GRADY PUTMAN  Gadsden, Etowah County

He is 27 AL AL AL and an electrician in a sawmill. Elva Wright his wife is 25 AL and they have James 5 AL and Jennie L. 2 6/12 AL. They live with her widowed mother Amanda Wright 60 AL. He is a son of John James Homer Putman and Daisy Southerlin from here and then Marshall County. They are in Birmingham by 1935 and there in 1940.

 

W. H. (WILLIAM HENRY) PUTMAN  Gadsden, Etowah County

He is 36 AL AL AL and a tenant farmer. Lecta Cameron his wife is 36 AL and they have Eloise 5 AL. They live with her folks Marshal and Edith Cameron. He is a son of Sanford Simeon Putman and Mary Hagens from here and Marshall County before that. They are back in Marshall County by 1940. He was born March 13, 1894 and will die in Boaz Alabama January 17, 1977. He was single here in 1920 and married Lectie in 1921. She was born April 10, 1893 and will die in Boaz February 14, 1956.

 

WILLIE L. (LLOYD) PUTNAM  Collins, Jackson County

He is 25 AL AL AL and a sharecropper. Virginia Ann Robertson is 23 AL and they have Leslie M. 5 AL, Daniel L. 3 AL and Joe L. 2/12 AL. He was born November 10, 1904. He married Vergie here October 22, 1923. He is a son of Forest Warren Putman and Nancy Jane Gifford from Jackson County.

 

WILL PUTMAN  Crow, Jackson County

He is 46 AL AL AL and cuts staves (for barrels I guess). Writing made it look like he was ‘counting slaves’ but that was pretty much over by 1930 even in Alabama. Mamie Capps his wife is 48 AL, and they now have Oscar 22 AL, Charley 20 AL, Jesse 17 AL and Horace 7 AL. He is William Thomas Putman a son of John W. Putman and Mary Jane Cochran from Princeton. He was born June 12, 1884. He married Mamie in Jackson County on June 5, 1906. Bill died March 2, 1952 and Mamie died March 9, 1960. Both are buried in the Clay Cemetery in Princeton. They are in Hollytree by 1940.

 

CLAUD PUTMAN  Hambrick, Jackson County

Horace Claude is 31 TN AL TN and has his own farm. Myrtle Roden his wife is 31 AL, Frank 12 AL, Beatrice 10 AL, Jennie 7 AL and Howard 6 AL. He is a son of Jesse and Amanda. He was born in March 1900. He married Myrtle November 29, 1916. They were here in 1920. Claude is in the federal penitentiary in South Bend, Fulton County Georgia in 1940. They are all here in 1950.

 

EDWARD V. (ESSIE VIRGIL) PUTMAN  Hambrick, Jackson County

He is 39 AL TN TN. His wife Mattie Penny is 30 AL. They have Elsie L. 15 AL, Lonny H. (Loren Hoyt a son) 13 AL and Cora 11 AL. He is a son of Jesse Putman and Amanda Posey. He was born January 22, 1888. He was called ‘Pool.’ He married Martha 'Mattie' Penny in Franklin County Tennessee on December 6, 1912. They were here in Hambrick, Jackson County in 1920. He died in Jackson County Alabama on October 13, 1969. He was a good friend of then Governor George Wallace and that family.

 

LARK M. (MANUEL) PUTMAN  Hambrick, Jackson County

He is 45 TN AL TN, Victoria Lumpkin his wife is 43 AL and their only son Malvert is 12 AL. He is a son of Jesse Putman and Amanda Posey. He was born back in Franklin County Tennessee on June 9, 1885. He married Victoria on October 6, 1905. They were here in 1910 and 1920 and will probably be here forever.

 

BETTY PUTMAN  Hollytree, Jackson County

She is now 68 AL and single. Her cousin Lizzie Smith 77 AL and widowed is still with her. Betty was a daughter of Jesse Putman and never married. She will go till March 20, 1945.

 

HOPE PUTNAM  Paint Rock, Jackson County

She is 29 AL and married but no husband is here because he died February 3, 1928. She has John J. 12 AL. She is Mary Hope Simmons and was married to Harvey Alexander Putman. I don’t think she remarried and will be here till she dies in 1983. Alex was a son of John Putman and Mary Jane Cochran from Princeton, Jackson County. The son John was born June 1, 1917. He married Priscilla Smith of Portland Maine on June 4, 1939. I just stumbled across this in some Maine Marriage records. He died July 13, 1983. Priscilla was born February 29, 1919 and died February 13, 1983. They are in Maine in 1950, then will be here in Paint Rock the rest of their lives. Both are buried in the Paint Rock Cemetery in Jackson County.

 

ROBERT L. (LEE) PUTNAM  Paint Rock, Jackson County

He is 65 AL AL AL and manages a sawmill. His second wife Clara is 37 AL and at home still are Grace 15 AL and Judson 19 AL. Judson was born October 3, 1910, and has just married Inez Rousseau who is 17 AL. They were married December 14, 1929. He is a son of Jesse Putman and Amanda Posey from here. Jesse died here in 1926 and his widowed mom will die in 1934. They will get divorced soon. Clara and Grace are in Madison County by 1935 and there in 1940.  Haven’t found Robert yet in 1940.Robert will go to 1950, Clara to 1964. Judson will die in Woodville, Alabama in April 1985.

 

VIRGINIA A. (ALBERTA) PUTNAM  Bessemer, Jefferson County

She is 20 WV married and has her son Richard L. 2 GA. They are living with her father Adolphus D. Landry 46 France and his mother Marie Landry 70 Switzerland widowed. Virginia Landry is/was married to George Arthur Putnam, son of George Banister Putnam and Mary Holland from New York State. In 1940 Virginia and Richard are in Jacksonville, Duval County Florida with her new husband W. L. Loue or Louis from Georgia. George Arthur Putnam is also there in Jacksonville in 1940 and in 1945 his son Richard is with him and is in the Navy them. New York Dutch family.

 

ED PUTNAM  Birmingham, Jefferson County

He is 72 NY CAN CAN and manages a bakery. Jeannie Walker his wife is 56 NY (really SCOT) and they have George 22 AL. He is George Edward Putnam the son of George and Elizabeth Putman from Niagara County Ontario. He was born in Niagara County New York October 7, 1857. They were there right across from NY in 1861. He will die in Birmingham November 23, 1934. He is part of the New York Dutch line.

 

HOWARD E. (EATON) PUTNAM  Birmingham, Jefferson County

He is 45 VT VT VT and a civil engineer. Pearl Davis his wife is 42 AL. They have Dorothy 18 AL, Howard W. 15 AL and Maria 6 AL. They were here in 1910 and 1920. He is a son of William Henry Harrison Putnam and Sarah Rebecca Pulsipher from Springfield, Windsor County Vermont. He was there in 1880 and 1900. His brother William is here in Birmingham and they probably came down together along with their brother Harry in the early 1900s. All three were here in 1910. He was married to Pearl then and has been here ever since. They are here in 1940.

 

JAMES E. PUTNAM  Birmingham, Jefferson County

He is 38 AL AL AL and a dry cleaner. Eva his wife is 34 LA. They have Myrtle J. 15 AL, James E. Jr. 13 AL, Herbert W. 11 AL, Dulcie 7 AL and Annie J. 5 AL. He is a son of Monroe W. and Bettie Putman from Cleburne County and then Calhoun County.

 

JOHN PUTMAN  Birmingham, Jefferson County

He is 70 TN AL VA, Annette Godfrey his wife is now 65 IN and Virginia 33 AL and Leon 31 AL are still at home. John Graham Putman is a son of John Covington Putman and Elizabeth Graham from Coffee County Tennessee. He has been married here since the late 1800s. They are all here in 1940.

 

JOHN PUTMAN  Birmingham, Jefferson County

He is 25 TX TX TX and a newspaper editor. He has been married a year to Margaret 21 AL. He is a son of James Samuel Putman and Eva Calhoun from Wood County Texas. He was home in 1910 and off at school in 1920.

He is 55 AL AL AL and a carpenter for the railroad. He says he is married, but Susan Leanna Gill is not here as she died in 1920. He has a son Kuy Lane 19 AL and daughter Mary Eileen 12 AL. He was in Cullman County in 1910 and 1920 and Blount County before that. He is a son of Reuben Ira Putman and Mary Lou Kelly.

 

JOHN W. PUTNAM  Birmingham, Jefferson County

He is 47 GA GA GA and works in a steel mill. Edith Tumlin his wife is 45 GA, Hubert 20 GA and Irene 10 GA. He is over from Cherokee County Georgia. He is a son of James W. Putman and Sarah and a grandson of Daniel. He and Edith were here in 1920.

 

LEONARD PUTNAM  Birmingham, Jefferson County

He is 14 AL AL AL and listed as a son of William and Maggie Talley. Maggie Henson was married to Bluford Monroe Putman in Cleburne County. She was with her mother in 1920. Bluford was at home in Calhoun County in 1920 and I don’t find him in 1930. Bluford was a son of Monroe W. Putman. Leonard was born July 13, 1915 and will die in Anniston Alabama January 27, 1994. He is married in Anniston in 1935 and 1940.

 

LUTHER A. PUTMAN  Birmingham, Jefferson County

He is 38 AL AL AL and single. He works in a steel plant. He was married to Minnie West here in Jefferson County in 1920. They were divorced and she is still in Precinct 44 with their two daughters.

 

MILLA PUTNAM  Birmingham, Jefferson County

She is 66 WI and widowed. She lives with her married daughter Pearl 38 WI and her husband Walter Hotchkiss. In 1900 she was married to William S. Putnam and was in Oshkosh, Winnebago County Wisconsin. Pearle was with them then at age 8.

 

MINNIE PUTNAM  Birmingham, Jefferson County

She is 45 AL AL AL and single. Her sisters Arlene 43 AL and Jewel 30 AL are here. Also here is their widowed mother Jane 76 AL. I just can’t find any of them before. Wonder if they are Putnams at all.

He is 51 AL AL AL and he owns a furniture store. Martha Victoria Robbins his wife is 49 AL and Mildred E. is 19 AL. He is a son of Hiram Alexander Putman and was here in 1920. He is widowed here in 1940.

 

WILLIAM E. (ELI) PUTNAM  Birmingham, Jefferson County

He is 51 VT VT VT and director of the Board of Education in the City. His wife Edith Ellison is 51 VT and they have Helen 21 AL. He is a son of William Henry Harrison Putnam and Sarah Rebecca Pulsipher from Springfield, Windsor County Vermont. He was born February 15, 1879 and will die here in Alabama in October 1962. He was there in 1880 and 1900. They were here in 1910 and in Bergen County New Jersey in 1920. His brother Howard is here too.

 

CLIFTON P. PUTMAN  East Pleasant, Jefferson County

He is 34 AL AL AL and a foreman in an iron mine. His wife Zola Mae Tidwell is 26 AL. They now have Auburn R. a son 9 AL, Jeanette O. 7 AL and Thomas R. 3 6/12 AL. They were in Blount County in 1920 just married. He is a son of Andrew Putman and Rachel Pierce from Blount County. He was born September 14, 1895 and will die in May 1979 in Bessemer Alabama.

 

ERNEST G. PUTTMAN  Fairfield, Jefferson County

He is 41 GER GER GER, his wife Elizabeth 35 GER, Elsie 12 PA, Gertrude 12 PA and his widowed mother Agnes Puttman 78 GER. They were in Allegheny County Pennsylvania in 1920 just arrived from Germany in 1917. He works in a steel mill like he did back in Pennsylvania.

 

JOHN G. (GRAHAM) PUTMAN  Homewood, Jefferson County

He is 43 AL TN TN and is a salesman for explosives, probably for the mines in the area. His wife Helen Calloway is 44 AL. They have John G. (the third) 16 AL and Margaret 5 AL. He is a son of John Graham Putman and Annette Godfrey from Birmingham He was in Birmingham with Helen in 1920.

 

MONROE PUTNAM  Precinct 20, Jefferson County

Monroe Ellis Putman is 48 AL AL AL and a farmer. Georgia Ann Lavonia Burroughs his wife is 42 AL and they have Thomas 7 AL and Edith 4 AL. His daughter Virginia 18 AL lives next door with her husband Kensey Glass. He is a son of George Washington Putman and Mary Ellis’ son from Blount County. They were here in Jefferson County in 1920. He was born March 17, 1883. Happy St. Patty's Day gift. He died September 17, 1969. Georgia Ann was born July 4, 1887 and died June 19, 1968. They are in Shelby County in 1940.

 

MINNIE PUTMAN  Precinct 44 (Huffman), Jefferson County

She is 42 GA and now divorced. She has Lucy H. 12 AL and Ruby L. 3 AL. She is Minnie West and was married to Luther Putman here in 1920. He is now up in Birmingham by himself.

 

WILLIAM H. H. (HENRY HARRISON) PUTNAM  Precinct 31, Jefferson County

He is 24 AL VT VT and an electrical engineer at a water pumping station. Estelle Lee Payne, his wife, is 25 AL and they have William E. (Eli) 1 2/12 AL. He is a son of William Eli Putnam and Edith Ellison from Birmingham. He was at home there in 1910. His dad was from Springfield, Vermont. This Bill is named for his grandfather William Henry Harrison Putnam.

 

LESTER PUTMAN Roebuck, Jefferson County

He is 25 AL AL AL and is a refinisher in a furniture store. His wife Irene is 18 AL. They have been married 3 years. He is a son of Thomas Harvey Putman and Victoria Robbins. They were all in Birmingham in 1920.

 

OATHER PUTMAN  Tarrant, Jefferson County

He is 34 AL AL AL and works in a pipe shop. His wife Minnie Carroll is 33 AL and the have OATHER Jr. 10 and Marjorie 7 AL. Oather Herman Putman is a son of Hiram Alexander Putman and Mary Elizabeth Hollis from here in Jefferson County. He was born November 7, 1895 in Walker County and will die here October 23, 1971. He and Minnie got married here November 19, 1916. She is a daughter of James Milledge  and Mary Elizabeth Carroll. She was born June 26, 1896 and will die here in Birmingham August 11, 1962. They are in Birmingham in 1935 and 1940 and 1950.

 

ROY K. (KNOWLTON) PUTMAN  Tarrant, Jefferson County

He is 26 AL AL AL and a mechanic in a garage. His wife Hattie Audrey Martin is 25 AL. They were married back in Madison County May 19, 1925. They have Roy H. 3 AL and Audrey K. 2 AL. He is a son of Henry E. Putman and Belzora Robinson from Madison County. They are here in 1940 and then will get divorced.

 

GARVIN G. (GEORGE) PUTMAN  Cross Roads, Lauderdale County

He is 46 AL AL AL and owns the farm. Lutie Mae Davis his wife is 36 AL. They have Estes (George Estes) 17 AL and Clayton 15 AL. Estes new wife Kathleen Mason 15 AL is with him. Clayton will marry Ruth Mae Mason. George Garvin is a son of George Washington Putman and Mary Thornton like everyone in town.

 

JESSE E. (ETTO) PUTMAN  Cross Roads, Lauderdale County

He is 32 AL AL AL and owns his farm. Virlie Covington his wife is 23 AL and they have Louise 5 AL and twins Junior and Joyce 1 AL. He is a son of George Washington Putman. He was missing in 1920, but got married about 1923 here.

 

THOMAS A. (ALBERT) PUTMAN  Cross Roads, Lauderdale County

He is 39 AL AL AL and works on his brother’s farm. His wife Georgia is 33 AL and Mary L. 13 AL. His widowed father George Washington Putman 70 AL is with them. All four are in nearby Mitchells, Lauderdale County in 1940. His brother Garvin lives next door on the same farm.

He is 48 AL AL AL and owns his farm. His wife Dora L. Davis is 48 AL and Maggie 24 AL is still at home. He is William Sherwood a son of George Washington Putman and Mary Thornton from here. He was born April 17, 1881.

 

ANDREW L. PUTMAN  Green Hill, Lauderdale County

He is 48 AL AL AL and owns his farm. His wife Cora Beulah Richardson is 43 AL. They have D. (Donald) Gentry 14 TN, Evie J. 10 TN, E. Marcella 6 AL and a son V. L. 2 TN. His son Haywood is married and is next door. Andrew is a son of Miles Richard Putman and Susan Sledge from here. He was here in 1910 and then up in Lawrence County Tennessee. From the birthplaces it looks like were back here every so often.

 

R. (ROBERT) HAYWOOD PUTMAN  Green Hill, Lauderdale County

Andrew’s son is 22 TN AL AL and rents part of his dad’s farm. Merlene, Myrtle Erline McDonald, his wife is 22 AL and they have a son W. A. 1 7/12 AL. He married Myrtle Erline McDonald June 22, 1927 in Lawrence County Tennessee.

 

ACIE F. (FRANKLIN) PUTMAN  Lexington, Lauderdale County

He is 43 AL, his wife Belle Howard is 38 AL and they now have at home Ora 17 AL, Spencer 16 AL, Verta or Venta 13 AL, Nellie 11 AL, Juanita 8 AL, Junos 6 AL and his twin Eunice 6 AL. He is a son of Jacob Wylie Putman and Mary Michaels from here. He was born here February 28, 1887 and will die here in February 1967.

 

CLARENCE E. PUTMAN  Lexington, Lauderdale County

He is 35 AL AL AL and owns his farm along side his father Jesse Putman. His wife Florence is 39 AL and they have John W. 4 6/12 AL and a stepdaughter Opel Key 16 AL from Florence’s first marriage.

 

FRANK A. (ABEL) PUTMAN  Lexington, Lauderdale County

He is now widowed and is 56 AL AL AL. He owns his own farm. Still at home are Martha 20 AL, Movilene 18 AL, Grover 16 AL, Reda (Marie Reeda) 14 AL and Arnold 12 AL. He is a son of Abel Putman and was born here. His wife Ella Campbell just died here on October 4, 1929. Frank will marry Georgia Swinea April 27, 1932 and then get divorced 16 months later. By the way, He is Franklin Abel Putman but has changed his name to Frank R. No idea why, but a relative said he did after Ella died.

 

HARTIE F. (FRANKLIN) PUTMAN  Lexington, Lauderdale County

He is 29 AL AL AL and owns his farm. Clara Lena Ritter his wife is 25 AL and they have Royce C. 7 AL, Alvus H. a son 5 AL, a daughter Azunas C. 3 2/12 AL and Hartie Jr. 1 2/12 AL. He is a son of Franklin Abel Putman and Ella Campbell from here.

 

J. (JAMES) COLLINS PUTMAN  Lexington, Lauderdale County

He is 33 AL AL AL and a tenant farmer. Mary Etta Hill his wife is 33 AL and they have Elton A. (Adolphus) 10 AL and another son Dais L. 2 AL. He is a son of Franklin Abel Putman and Ella Campbell from here. He was born here September 24, 1896.

 

J. (JAMES) WILSON PUTMAN  Lexington, Lauderdale County

He is a son of Jacob Wylie Putman and was born right here February 15, 1899. He is 40 AL. He has a new wife Virgie Lee Brown 26 AL. They were married in 1928. I assume his first wife Mary had died. They have Virlie 18 AL from his first marriage and a new daughter Mabel 4/ 12 AL.

 

J. (JESSE) THOMAS PUTMAN  Lexington, Lauderdale County

He and the family have moved over from Green Hill. Jess is 56 AL and owns the farm. Lizzie Mathews his wife is 52 AL and Hazel 14 AL is the only one still at home. His son Will rents part of the farm here. He is Miles and Susan Jane Putman' eldest. He was born February 15, 1874, and married Mary Elizabeth Mathews here on March 17, 1897.

 

JESSE PUTMAN  Lexington, Lauderdale County

He is 59 AL TN AL and owns his farm. Lizzie Lanier his wife is 59 AL and Lela A. 21 AL is still at home. He is a son of Abel Putman and Nancy Cox and was born here. He’ll be here till he dies in 1955. Lizzie will die here in 1935 though. Their son Clarence has a farm alongside them, probably part of the original acreage.

 

JOHN D. PUTMAN  Lexington, Lauderdale County

He is 36 AL AL AL and has his own farm. Marsha Cora Cole his wife is 32 AL. They have Lee R. 12 AL, Miles L. and his twin Lillian 9 AL, Herbert S. 6 AL and Mary S. 1 AL. He is Miles Richard Putman and Susan Jane Sledge's son and was born September 30, 1894.

 

TOLLIE M. PUTMAN  Lexington, Lauderdale County

He is a son of Wylie Putman and Mary Michaels and was born here. He owns his farm and is 27 AL AL AL. Lutie Balch his wife is 24 AL and they have Zelotes a son 6 AL, Mary O. 4 4/12 AL, Helen M. 2 6/12 AL, and Wiley D. just born. He lives next to his brother Virgil and I assume they just took over their folks farm after they died.

 

VIRGIL L. (LAWRENCE) PUTMAN  Lexington, Lauderdale County

He is a son of Wylie and Mary Putman. He is 31 AL AL AL and owns a farm. Mary Bessie Alexander his wife is 28 AL and they have been married 10 years. They have Mary E. just born. Also here is his brother John D. 23 AL and still single.

 

W. (WILLIAM) RICHARD PUTMAN  Lexington, Lauderdale County

He is Miles Richard Putman’ son and has been here all his life. He is now 52 AL AL AL and owns his farm. Dora Lee Green his wife is 50 AL and they have Alene 21 AL, J. Willard (James Willard) 19 AL, Nellie S. 17 AL and Gladys M. 12 AL.

 

WILL D. PUTMAN  Lexington, Lauderdale County

He is a son of Jesse Thomas Putman and Mary Mathews. He has moved over from Green Hill, as have his folks. He is now 30 AL AL AL and rents a part of the farm from his dad. His wife Bernice Colbert is 23 and they have Mary E. 7 AL, James C. 6 AL, Effie M. 4 6/12 AL, Jesse T. a son 3 4/12 AL and Mammie P. 4/12 AL. They were married over the line in Lawrence County Tennessee December 26, 1920.

 

TRAVIS PUTMAN  Precinct 7, Lawrence County

He is 19 AL AL AL single and working on a farm. He is a son of Joseph Franklin Putman. He was home in Oakville, Lauderdale County in 1920.

 

CLYDE H. (HUEL) PUTNAM  Phoenix City, Lee County

He is 29 AL AL AL and is a furniture maker. Mary Veasey his wife is 27 AL and they have Betty 6 AL, Sarah A. 2 6/12 AL and Martha J. 1 2/12 AL. He is a son of William Harold Putnam here in town.

 

JACK PUTNAM  Phoenix City, Lee County

He is 45 AL AL AL and works in the cotton mill. Lucy his wife is 53 GA and still has three kids named McClung from her earlier marriage. They were in Russell County in 1920. He is Colby Jackson Putnam another son of John William Putnam from Georgia and then Russell County Alabama.

 

WILLIAM H. (HAROLD) PUTNAM  Phoenix City, Lee County

He is 55 AL AL AL and works in a cotton mill. His third wife Minnie Ola Slappey is 53 AL and they have Nellie 13 AL. Very confusing. This looks like a new wife, and Nellie wasn’t listed with him in 1920. The age is off but he is the son of John William Putman and Eugenia Jackson who has been here. In 1940, Minnie is widowed here with Nellie who is married then.

 

RUBY L. (LEE) PUTMAN  Ardmore, Limestone County

He is 29 AL AL AL. His wife Odell Watkins is 29 AL and they have Danvis L. (Leroy) 5 AL and Mary R. (Rose) 4/12 AL. He is a son of George Lee Putman and his second wife Ida Mae Reynolds. They were in Young County Texas in 1880. Ruby was born November 22, 1900 and will die April 21, 1982 in Limestone County. He married Odell Watkins March 4, 1923. She was born February 18, 1901 and will die here on May 14, 1970. The son Danvis Leroy was born January 22, 1926 and died July 14, 1999 in Madison County Alabama. He married Pearl Elizabeth Miller and later Grace Mitchell. The daughter Mary Rose was born December 17, 1929 and died in Madison County August 29, 1976. She married James Leslie Campbell on February 11, 1950. This line goes back to Ezekiel Putnam from South Carolina and then Georgia.

 

ED PUTMAN  Athens, Limestone County

He is 31 TN TN TN and works in the cotton mill. Lacy Powers his wife is 31 AL and they have Elizabeth 10 TN, Katherine 8 AL and Howard 6 AL. He is James Edward Putman a son of William George Putman and Mary Lee Hill. He was born July 28, 1898. In the WWI registration of 1917 he lists his wife as Lucy, They were in Madison County in 1920 along with his folks. A relative states her name was Lucy Lee Powers. Their tombstones indicate she was Lucy Harmon born December 6, 1898 and died September 18, 1974. Ed died November 20, 1951.

 

EMMET PUTMAN  Athens, Limestone County

He is 36 TN TN AL and works in a cotton mill. His wife Laura Ellen Hollingsworth is 29 AL and they now have Audrey 14 AL, Ozell a daughter 11 AL, Aretha 9 AL, James 6 AL and William 1/12 AL. He is Pleasant William Emmett Putman and is a son of William George Putman and Mary Lee Hill from here. They were in Madison County in 1920 and now back home.

 

GILBERT PUTMAN  Athens, Limestone County

He is 28 AL AL TN and works in a knitting mill. His wife Lydia Mae Powers is 25 AL, and they have Mabel 9 AL, Stella 6 AL, Magdalene 5 AL, William 2 6/12 AL and Luther 5/12 AL. They were married here September 6, 1919 and in 1920 were and living with her folks. Luther Gilbert Putman is a son of William George Putman and Mary Lee Hill. He was born April 11, 1901 and will die in Ashland City, Tennessee April 15, 1976. His widowed mom lives either next-door or more likely in the same house. Gilbert and family are all in Nashville by 1935.

 

GROVER PUTMAN  Athens, Limestone County

He is 25 TN TN TN and works in a cotton mill. His wife Flora West is 22 AL and the have Reba 3 AL. He is a son of William George Putman and Mary Lee Hill from here. They were in Madison County in 1920.

 

JAMES I. (ISAAC) PUTMAN  Athens, Limestone County

He is 48 AL TN AL and owns his farm. His second wife Lillie May King is 42 AL. They have Eula 16 AL, Alberta 14 AL, Nova K. 12 AL, James E. 10, Mack I. (Isaac) 8 AL, Willie 6 AL, and Beatrice 5 AL. They will have one more son Kenneth in 1931. They were here in 1910 and then overlooked in 1920. He was born, according to his tombstone, October 15, 1881 in Lauderdale County and died December 15, 1955 in Limestone County. According to his WWI registration, he is listed as being born on October 1, 1876. He married Mary Elizabeth Weems about 1900. She was born in June 1882 and died soon after they were married. They were living with her father in Lauderdale County for the 1900 census. He then married Lillie Mae King in about 1906. According to her tombstone, she was born March 13, 1887 and died December 24, 1956.

 

LEE PUTMAN  Athens, Limestone County

She is 53 TN and widowed. At home still are Willie 22 AL, Clemie a son 16 AL and Lester 14 AL. Mary Lee Hill is the widow of William George Putman from here. They were briefly in Madison County in 1920, but back here shortly afterwards. William was killed in an explosion while working on highway construction here in 1929.

 

RICHARD PUTMAN  Big Creek, Limestone County

He is 30 AL AL AL and a tenant farmer. Florence Pilot his wife is 28 AL, and they have Minnie 12 AL, Annie 9 AL, Mattie 7 AL, George S. 5 AL, James 4 TN, and Marvin just born that month AL. He is a son of Samuel Putman and Annie Daly from here. He was home in 1910 and like most of the folks not counted in 1920. They are in Dyersburg, Tennessee in 1940.

 

EARLIE PUTMAN  Elkmont, Limestone County

He is a son of Samuel Putman and Annie Daly. He is a tenant farmer and is 26 AL AL AL. His wife Bessie is 21 AL and they have been married 7 years. They have Lena M. 6 AL, Christine 4 2/12 AL and Earl Jr. 2 1/12 AL. Based on an obituary for Earlie Jr. born March 24, 1928, the family will soon move over the line into Tennessee and then young Earl will move to Michigan and spend the rest of his life there. He will die in Lansing October 2, 2011. Earl and the family will be in Dyer County Tennessee in 1935 and then in Pemiscot County Missouri in 1940.

 

ELMER PUTMAN  Elkmont, Limestone County

He is a son of George Frank Putman from here. He is 21 AL and his wife Inez Furline is 16 AL. They have been married a year. In fact, her folks, Gus and Lillia Furline, work the next farm plot. Elmer was born March 18, 1909 and will die in Athens in March 1976.

 

FRANK PUTMAN  Elkmont, Limestone County

He is 60 TN TN TN and his wife Syntha is 60 TN. Beats me. He is a tenant farmer and lives next to Lucian. Lucian had a brother Frank, but he would only be 40, and he did marry Sis Carter. So this may be him with just some bad info. They are here in 1940 at ages 65 and 69.

 

GEORGE F. (FRANK) PUTMAN  Elkmont, Limestone County

He is 48 AL AL AL and owns his own farm. Rosie King his second wife is 30 TX and her widowed dad Robert S. King 69 TN is back with them. He went to Collin County Texas in the early 1900s and his first wife Lula Elders died there in 1917 and he married Rossie there and they were back here in 1920. Anyway, they have Lucille 18 AL, Tommie 14 AL, Leon 7 AL, Clara 5 AL, Ollie B. 4 AL, Jesse 10 AL (actually 19 AL). The ages are all off by 5 years or so. George is a son of Zedoc Putman from here. Then there are his son Roy 23 AL and his wife Anna Bell McClusky 22AL. They have been married for 5 years now.

 

LESTER PUTMAN  Elkmont, Limestone County

He is 20 TX, his wife Emma A. 22 AL and they have Helen 3/12 AL. He is a son of James Thomas Putman and was born while the family was in Hunt County Texas. They all came back here by the 1920 census. He is a tenant farmer. They are in Mississippi in 1940.

 

LUCIAN PUTMAN  Elkmont, Limestone County

He is 40 AL, Annie C. Lash his wife is 46 AL. They have James 15 AL, Elvira 12 AL, Hiram 8 AL and Louise 7 AL. Also working the farm is his son Bennie 20 AL and his wife Ruby 23 AL and their daughter Reba 1 4/12 AL. He is a son of Isaac Putman from here. He was born March 3, 1889 and died June 29, 1961. He was married twice. His first wife was Myrtle M. Cannup (? Spelling). She died after having the first child, Bennie born August 10, 1910. His second wife was Annie Lash born August 10, 1887. Annie was the wife of his brother Ben. When Ben died and after Myrtle died, Lucian married Annie about 1914.

 

MELVIN PUTMAN  Elkmont, Limestone County

He is 28 AL and his wife Georgia Mae Eaves is 21 AL, and is a tenant farmer. He is a son of Andrew Jackson Putman and Ella May White from here and grandson of Emmett Miles Putman. He was born December 18, 1902. He married Georgia Mae Evans on July 6, 1924. He will die in Wayne County Michigan April 7, 1988.

He is now 69 AL and Palmira Pluten his wife 69 AL. This is first time she has used her full name, as she has been Mira up till now. He is a son of Samuel Putman and Mary Ann Call.

He is 38 AL AL AL and owns his farm. Evelyn Davy his wife is 41 AL and they now have Jessie 18 AL, Lessie 16 AL, Virginia E. 13 AL, Jewell 10 AL, Pauline 8 AL, Cora A. 4 AL, Sam Jr. 2 6/12 AL and George 1/12 AL. He is a son of Richard Putman and Mire Pluten from here.

He is indexed as Elisha but is Emmett Miles Putman. He is 84 TN TN TN and still widowed. He is with his daughter Sallie 38 TN and her husband Arthur Fish 48 AL. He was with his son Jack in Madison County in 1920.

P. a son (probably Emmett) 6 AL, George E. 4 AL, Bessie Louise 2 AL and Mary E. 1 AL. His son Ernest lives next door or possibly in the same house. They are sharecroppers. He will die in Huntsville, Madison County in 1935, and Mae will be widowed in Dallas, Madison County in 1940.

 

JIM T. (THOMAS) PUTMAN  Sand Springs, Limestone County

He is another son of Emmett Miles Putman. They were in Big Creek in 1920. He is 51 TN AL KY and owns his farm. His wife Viola Brown is 49 AL. They have Jim Jr. 17 AL, Clifford 12 AL, Yate a son 10 AL, and Edward 6 AL. The gang is across the border in Bolivar County Mississippi in 1940.

 

BOSE PUTMAN  Shoalford, Limestone County

He is 35 AL and his wife Leslie 28 AL. They now have Hazel 11 AL, Martha 9 AL, Jennie 6 AL, Fred 3 AL and Norman just born. He is a son of Andrew Jackson Putman and Ella Mae White. He was born in Tennessee, I think, in 1899 and was in Madison County in 1910 and 1920 and will be in Huntsville, Madison County in 1940.

 

WILLIAM H. (HOUSTON) PUTMAN  Slough, Limestone County

He is 26 AL AL AL and a clerk in a grocery store. Alta Hice his wife is 22 AL and they have Norma 1 7/12 AL and a son Leeton 4/12 AL. He is a son of William Sherwood Putman and Dora Davis. He was at home in Cross Roads, Lauderdale County in 1910 and 1920. They are all back there in 1940 with four more kids.

 

BENJAMIN F. (FRANKLIN) PUTMAN  Huntsville, Madison County

He is 55 AL TN AL and has a grocery store. His wife Laura Belle Edwards is 57 AL and they still have Robert 20 AL and Doris H.16 AL. He is a son of William Putman and Elizabeth Myers and has been in Jackson County where he was born up until now. He was born March 6, 1875. He married Laura Belle Edwards in Jackson County on December 31, 1898. He will die here in 1932.

 

MARY & ZORA PUTMAN  Huntsville, Madison County

Mary is 23 AL and Zora Lee 19 AL. They are lodging here in town. They are daughters of Henry Edward and Belzora Putman from Whitesburg. They were there with their widowed mother in 1920, and are also listed there now. Zora will marry Vance Edwards here later this year and Mary will marry James Coward in Athens, Limestone County in 1933.

 

RALPH PUTMAN  Huntsville, Madison County

He is 24 AL AL AL and a typesetter for a newspaper. His wife Juanita Bradford is 22 AL and they have Sarah Jane 4/12 AL. He is a son of Benjamin Franklin Putman here in town. He was home with them in 1920. He married Juanita October 15, 1928.

 

WILLIAM E. (EDWARDS) PUTMAN  Huntsville, Madison County

He 27 AL AL AL and an insurance agent. His wife Maude Sheridan Perkins is 21 AL and they have a daughter Sheridan L. 1 AL. He is a son of Benjamin Franklin Putman and Laura Belle Edwards. He was born in October 1902. They all came over from Jackson County in the last 5-6 years. They are in Atlanta in 1935 and just outside in Avondale Estates, Georgia in 1940.

 

LUCY PUTMAN  Merrimack, Madison County

She is 20 AL AL AL single and boarding in company housing at a cotton mill.

 

ED PUTMAN  New Market, Madison County

Edward Richard is a son of Jesse Putman and Amanda Posey from Jackson County. They moved over here and were in Sulphur Springs in 1920. He is now 50 TN TN AL and owns a farm Charlotte ‘Lottie’ Kroger his wife is 48 TN and they now have Floyd 22 AL, Ivesta 15 AL, Melvin 12 AL, Harry 9 AL and a granddaughter Ruby 2 5/12 AL. Ruby will get adopted as in 1940 she is listed a daughter.

 

CHRISTOPHER M. (MORRIS) PUTMAN  Sulphur Springs, Madison County

He is 52 AL TN AL and owns a farm. Margaret Ellen Toney 55 AL, Luvicie a daughter 29 AL, Frederick Grady 16 AL. He is a son of William Putman and Elizabeth Meyers from Coffee County Tennessee and then Jackson County. He was home there in 1900 and then in Bee County Texas in 1920 and now back here. He will stay here till he dies in 1937.

 

BELZORA PUTMAN  Whitesburg, Madison County

She is Belzora Robinson the widow of Henry Edward Putman from Jackson County and was widowed here in 1920 as well. She is 52 AL and still runs the farm with some of the kids. She will be here till she dies in 1933. At home are Mary 22, Zora Lee 19, Calvin Edward 17, William Frederick 15, and James Horace 13. Her son Paul 28 and his wife Clara Lee Bailey 25 and their daughters Pauline 4 AL and Ruth 1 AL are living here too.

 

JOHN PUTMAN  Bexar, Marion County

He is 29 AL a tenant farmer. Eva Engle his wife is 24 AL and they have Hansel 6, a son Loy 4 4/12, Vela 2 2/12 and Velma 2/12 AL. He is John Carlton Putman a son of James Vann Putman and Ella Brown his second wife. He was with his dad and mom here in 1920 and married Eva in 1923. He will take off around 1935 and be in the Bryce Hospital for the Insane in Tuscaloosa in 1940. When he gets out he leaves Eva here with 6 kids and head to Texas where he will die in 1973.

 

LANDER PUTNAM  Arab, Marshall County

He is 56 AL AL AL and owns his own farm. He has a new wife Ida E. 42 AL and her daughter Florence Harmon 10 AL. He is Richard Lander Putman a son of John Wesley Putman from Blount County. He was married there in 1900 through 1920 to Charlotte Hare. She died in 1925 and he married Ida. They are here in 1940 and he will die here in 1944.

 

JESSE J. (JAMES) PUTNAM  Arab, Marshall County

He is 26 TX TX AL and sells fruit trees. His wife Vera Humphries is 24 AL and they have Sarah 2 5/12 AL. He happens to live next to the above Richard Lander Putman, but is another whole line. He is a son of James Winston Putman from Marshall County who went to Texas and was in Kaufman County in 1900. They are in Morgan County in 1940 and he is a principal at a public school and Vera is a teacher.

 

SAMUEL M. (MARCUS) PUTNAM  Arab, Marshall County

He is 50 AL AL AL and owns his own farm. Etta Lavonia Green his wife is 45 AL and they have William Coy 27 AL, Junior B. 25 AL, Dillard L. 22 AL, Kermit J. 15 AL and Afton 9 AL. Also here is her widowed mother Harriet Green 74 GA. He is a son of William Thomas Putman and Manilla Aldridge from here. Been here all his life.

 

ZEDOC L. (LINA) PUTNAM  Arab, Marshall County

He is 55 AL SC TN and has his own farm. Mary Sue Camp his wife is 44 AL, a daughter Cleo 26 AL, Doris (actually a son Darrias Zedock) 16 AL, Thelma E. 13 AL, Ulysses 11 AL, and Lester H. 5 AL. There is also a grandson Wendell B. 3 AL. He is a son of Zed and Margaret Putman and was born here.

 

GUY PUTMAN  Cranford, Marshall County

He is William Guy Putman, a son of Zedoc and Mary Putman from here. He is 22 AL and married two years to Lilla May Cranford 24 AL. He was born March 14, 1907 and will die here November 24, 1973.

 

COY W. PUTMAN  Georgia Mountain, Marshall County

He is 27 AL AL AL single and a schoolteacher. He is William Coy Putman, son of Samuel Marcus Putman and Etta Green. He will soon marry Mildred and they are here in 1940 with two kids. He was born October 5, 1901 and will die November 24, 1973.

 

SANFORD S. (SIMEON) PUTMAN  Red Apple, Marshall County

He is now 74 AL SC SC and widowed. His son Ervin Hagens 30 AL is still at home. He is a son of John W. Putman and Angela Frances Walker from South Carolina and then Calhoun County Alabama. He was born February 4, 1856 and married Mary Hagen December 20, 1876, and they were in St. Clair County in 1880, Etowah County in 1900 and here in 1910 and 1920. He will die here December 12, 1933.

 

WILLIAM T. PUTMAN  Red Apple, Marshall County

He is 26 GA GA GA and is married to Inez Terry 21 GA and they have Inez 1 2/12 GA. They live with her folks Marion and Jennie Terry also from Georgia. Best guess is he is the son of Samuel Love Putnam and Ida Blackwell from Gordon County Georgia.

 

WALTER D. (DEFOREST) PUTNAM  Mobile, Mobile County

He is 60 IL MA ENG and boarding. Says he is married, but no one is around. His wife Mary Brown will be widowed back in Fayette County in 1940 with a married daughter. He is a son of John Putnam and Eliza Sandow from Warren, Jo Daviess County Illinois. He was just born there in 1870. He has been in Fayette County Alabama since the early 1900s and had a family there in 1920.

 

CHARLES D. (DAVID) PUTNAM  Monroeville, Monroe County

He is 31 GA GA GA and works in a machine shop. Libbie his wife is 31 AL. He is a son of David Lumpkin Putman, Jr. from Cherokee County Georgia. NORMAN W. (WILLIAM) PUTNAM  Montgomery, Montgomery County

He is 37 CAN CAN CAN and a shipping clerk in a lumberyard. Annie E. Van Winckle his wife is 37 CAN, and they have Norma E. 19 CAN, Harvey P. 13 CAN, Dorothy E. 11 CAN, Helen 7 AL, Thelma O. 5 AL and Lois 2 AL. They also had a daughter Josephine born and died in 1925. They were just getting here in 1920 and made that census. He is Norman William Pierson Putnam a son of Robert Putnam and Margaret Pratt. He was born August 10, 1893 in Hanover, Grey County Ontario Canada. He married Elicia March 29, 1910 in Toronto. He will die in Montgomery April 26, 1952. Elicia is a daughter of Phillip Elwyn Van Winkle and Annie Elisia Wilson and was born in Toronto August 8, 1883 and will die in Montgomery, Alabama December 28, 1960. ANDREW J. (JACKSON) PUTMAN  Decatur, Morgan County

He is 57 TN TN TN and a laborer. His wife Millie Mae Downs is 38 AL and they have Velma 9 AL. He is a son of Emmett Miles Putman and Mary Jane Gardner. A sheet shows he was born in Shelbyville, Tennessee May 15, 1973 and will die in Natchez, Mississippi October 15, 1959. Millie is a daughter of David Downs and was born in May 1891 and will die in Natchez January 1, 1956. He was first married to Ella May White who died around 1904 and then was with his dad in Madison County in 1910 and there with Millie in 1920 and will be here in Morgan County in 1940.

 

JAMES H. PUTMAN  Decatur, Morgan County

He is 65 AL AL AL and his wife Minnie Copeland Barnes is 59 AL. He is a son of John and Adelia Putman from Lawrence County. They have been here in Morgan County since the late 1800s. He runs a general store.

 

THEO PUTMAN  Decatur, Morgan County

He is 32 AL AL AL, Dora his wife is 31 AL and they have Theo Jr. 2 9/12 AL. He is a merchant at a general warehouse. Actually probably works at his dad’s store. He is Theodore Eldred Putman a son of the above James and Minnie Putman. He was born June 23, 1898 and was at home with them here in 1910 and with Dora in Birmingham in 1920. He will die in Decatur Alabama in July 1979.

 

NOMER PUTMAN  Ryan’s Cross Roads, Morgan County

He is 35 AL AL AL and a tenant farmer. Octavia Zelphia Briscoe his wife is 30 AL. They have Mahlon 12 AL, Clovis 11 AL and Avis B. 7 OK. Okay. He is a son of James Winston Putman from here. His dad was a preacher and they were in Kaufman County Texas in 1900, Hood County Texas in 1910. He must have come here because he married Octavia here November 19, 1916 and then in 1920 they were in Tillman County Oklahoma. Now they are back where they began. His full name is Nomer Marion Putman. He was born March 2, 1896. Nomer died in Houston, Texas in March 1975. Octavia was born October 1, 1899 and died in Channelview, Texas January 21, 1990. The son Alvis Boyd was born July 22, 1922 in Frederick, Oklahoma and will die in the attack on Pearl Harbor December 7, 1942.

 

LUTHER L. PUTTMAN  Cleveland, Perry County

He is 37 AL AL AL, Irene 32 AL and they have Lena M. 8 AL, James W. 6 AL, Anne 3 AL, Ernest 2 AL and Doris L. 2/12 AL.

 

MALLIE PUTMAN  High Shoals, Randolph County

She is a black woman 61 GA and widowed.

 

CHARLIE B. (BRADFORD) PUTMAN  Girard, Russell County

He is 54 AL AL AL and a mechanic at a cotton gin mill. Ludie Emma Parker his wife is 49 AL and they have Ludie 16 AL, Robert P. 13 AL, Quita a daughter 12 AL, Thomas R. 10 AL and William E. 8 AL. He is a son of John William Putman and Eugenia Jackson from Lee County and here as well. Ludie will die here October 16, 1935 and Charles on February 5, 1938. In 1940 most of the kids with wives and all have taken over the house here in Girard.

 

CHARLES PUTMAN  Phoenix City, Russell County

He is 22 AL AL AL and a sheet metal worker. Annie D. Allen his wife is 19 FL and they have Annie 4 AL and Mary 1 AL. He is a son of Charles Bradford and Ludie Putnam from here. He married Annie July 1, 1925. They will split and he will be in Pensacola, Florida in 1940 married to Joanne Lee Jones 7 years younger and from Alabama. He married Joanne April 21, 1940. He is there in 1945 with a third wife Myrtle Lee Stoll also from Alabama, who he married June 8, 1944. Guess he keeps coming back up here, grabs a girl and off to Florida every few years.

 

FLOYD W. (WILSON) PUTMAN  Phoenix City, Russell County

He is 8 AL and a nephew of Eugene and Minnie Newsome. He is here in 1940 and Minnie is widowed and he is listed as a son. Minnie Guy was the second wife of John Robert Putman from here and was the mother of John William Putman who was Floyd’s dad. He was born here in Phoenix City October 12, 1924.

 

JAMES E. PUTNAM  Phoenix City, Russell County

He is 24 AL AL AL and a plumber. Bertie his wife is 26 AL and they have James D. 5 AL. He is a son of William Harold Putnam and his second wife Lorene Griffin from Phoenix City on the Lee County side. The boundary runs through the City. It’s right across the river from Columbus, Georgia.

 

JOHN W. (WILLIAM) PUTMAN  Ashville, St. Clair County

He is now 69 AL NC AL and a farm overseer. Willie Davis his second wife is 56 AL He is a son of Joel Allen Putman and his first wife Narcissa Coker. He was born in September 1862. He married Elizabeth Ann Tankersley, born July 30, 1858, in Georgia and died May 12, 1906. She was a daughter of Andrew and Martha Tankersley. He then married Willie E. Davis (widow of a Thelman guy) in 1909. Willie was born October 4, 1874 and will die June 4, 1946. John will die November 3, 1933 here in St. Clair County.

 

LOUIS PUTMAN  Ashville, St. Clair County

He is John William’s son and is 43 AL AL GA. Nena Horton his second wife (he was first married to her sister Willie who died in 1911) is 43 AL, Lillie M. 19 AL, Ella L. 17 AL, Myrtie 16 AL, Agnes 13 AL, L. B. a son 8 AL and John L. 6 AL. They were in Whorton’s Bend, Etowah County in 1920. He was born February 22, 1888, a twin. He died June 24, 1931. He married Winnie Horton, born March 14, 1887 and died June 20, 1911. He then married her twin sister Nena W. Horton, born March 14, 1887 and died December 24, 1963. He will die here June 24, 1931 and Nena is widowed here with the kids in 1940.

 

WILLARD PUTMAN  Chandler Mountain, St. Clair County

He is 19 AL AL AL single and working on the Perkins farm. Not sure who he is. He is not William Richard’s  kid from Lauderdale County. He looks like the one married in Anniston, Calhoun County in 1940.

 

FRED V. PUTMAN  Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County

He is 31 AL and an inmate at the Bryce Hospital. In 1920 he was in the State Hospital for the Insane, same place. He’ll be here in 1940 and probably forever.

 

HOUSTON P. (PAUL) PUTMAN  Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County

He is 25 AL AL AL and has a barber shop. His wife Audrey is 22 AL and Houston Paul Jr. is 2 5/12 AL. He is a son of Adolphus Putman who was a policeman and killed in the line of duty in 1905. His mother Delia Vanderveer died in 1913 and he was living with his grandfather Hiram Alexander Putman in 1920. He born December 11, 1904 and died in Tuscaloosa January 19, 1978. He married Audrey Mae Criss in Walker County on March 2, 1925.

 

MARGARET PUTNAM  Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County

She is 27 MO ND MO single and boarding. She is a public-school teacher. She is a daughter of Richard and Esther Putnam from Lawrence County Missouri. She was at home in Marionville in 1920.

 

PEARL PUTNAM  Bartonville, Walker County

She is Pearle May Stacks now the widow of David Lawrence Putman who was killed in a mine accident here August 10, 1927. She is now 37 AL and operates a farm. At home still are Jewell 18 AL, Dolphus 16 AL, Mabel 14 AL, Glynn 12 AL, Belton 10 AL and Lawrence 8 AL. Her two eldest daughters were married in the mid 1920s.

 

JAMES V. (VANN) PUTMAN  Kansas, Walker County

He is 66 AL, Ella Brown his second wife is 51 AL and a daughter Jessie Mae 31 AL. He is a son of John W. Putman and Angie Walker from Calhoun County. He was married first to Mary Elizabeth Duke on October 4, 1885 and divorced by the early 1890s.  He and Ella were in Marion County in 1900 through the 1920.

 

DELLA PUTMAN  Precinct 12, Walker County

She is 21 AL and married for 4 years, but is by herself with her widowed mother Cora Butts. She will be still living with her mom in 1940 but they are in Birmingham and she has a son Donald who would be about 2 years old now in 1930.

 

ARTHUR B. (BELTON) PUTNAM  Haleyville, Winston County

He is 45 SC NC SC and is a building contractor. Susie Jane Ramsey his wife is 43 GA and they now have Lindsay (actually Wendell) 23 AL, Wade (James Wade) 19 AL, Frank 16 AL, Joe 12 AL, Ruth 10 AL, Otto 8 AL, George 6 AL and Johnnie 3 AL. He is Arthur Belton Putman a son of John Wade Putman of Spartanburg, SC and grandson of Arthur McLain Putman from North Carolina. He has been here in 1910 and in Hall County Georgia before that. He married Susie there in 1903. They were in Marion County Alabama in 1920. They are back in Kimbrough, Marion County in 1940.  He’ll be back in Haleyville later and he will die here in 1953.
