CALIFORNIA

CENSUS REPORTS

1850 – 1900

===============

For a long time, California was part of Mexico, first under Spanish rule and then in 1821 fell under Mexican rule. John Freemont established the Republic of California in 1848 and then gold was discovered in 1849. By 1850, enough people had flocked to California that it was ceded to the United States and in 1850 California became the 31st State in the Union. The first census was taken in 1850.

CALIFORNIA 1850 CENSUS

In this report there were eight Putmans and seven Putnams listed. It would seem they all came for gold as all fifteen were individuals and there were no families listed.

JAMES PUTNAM  Pleasant Hill, El Dorado County

James is listed as 25 MA, a miner, and is living by himself. He’ll be here in 1860 and will list himself as being born in Ohio, which should be correct. He looks to be a son of Albert Putnam and Rachel Allen from Huron County Ohio. They were there in 1820. James was born in 1822. Albert died in 1828, and his wife remarried to Stephen Kelsey. Albert was from Oneida County New York and connected to a son of Charles Putnam and Martha Rose from Oneida County and Preston, Connecticut before that.

SAMUEL PUTNAM  Placerville, El Dorado County

Samuel Osgood Putnam is listed as 23 NH, and is living by himself. He’ll be in Placer County in 1870 and 1880 as well. He is a son of Benjamin Putnam (E1948 RM4592) and Sarah Tenney and was born December 15, 1826 in Wilmot, Merrimack County New Hampshire. According to his obituary, he arrived in San Francisco July 19, 1849 and mined gold. He’ll return by boat to New York in 1852 and return back here a few months later. By 1854 he went into the lumber business and then will build and operate the Putnam House Hotel in Placer.

His first child will be born in CA in 1857. George is the son of George Small Putnam and Polly Carter. He will be in Sacramento in 1860.

It has his middle initial as "E". This would make him Charles Edwin Putnam, son of John Putnam and Polly Herrick. He will be here in 1860 and also listed back in Nashua, New Hampshire in 1860.

J. P. PUTMAN  San Francisco, San Francisco County

He is listed as 26 MA, living by himself.  He was from Boston, Suffolk County Massachusetts, prior to coming to California. He should be John Pearson Putnam, a son of Ephraim Putnam (1957) and his second wife, Rachel Stoddard. He was born in Boston January 15, 1827. He is married to Mary Jane Lewis. He was in Boston (Chelsea) in 1850 and will be back and in the 1860 there. He was a sail maker, and probably just out here for business.

STEPHEN PUTNAM  San Francisco, San Francisco County

Stephen P. S. is listed as 35 MA, a gentleman (love it!).  His wife, Augusta Sargent, is 26 MA.  The children are: Adelaide 9 MA, and Charles C. He and William are probably connected with the family of Miles Putnam. They were all that were around back then in New Jersey. This guy might be John Davis Putnam Jr. The age is off by about 2 years, but he isn’t in New Jersey now.

WILLIAM PUTNAM  None listed, Tuolumne County

William is listed as 25 NJ, a miner.  He was from New Jersey, prior to coming to California.  He is living with John Putnam listed earlier. Again, he must be descended from Miles. He also tried to slit his own throat. I cannot find him in 1880 under Mervin McLain. His name was spelled "Puttman" in every case including his obituary. In various articles he is described as a thief, murderer and an opium addict. He also joined some sort of organized crime group while in Folsom Prison. Good times! Johnny Cash should have written a song about him. There are several more articles about George. Half the time his name is spelled Putman and the other half it is Puttman. There is an article from 1899 that gives more information about his family. The article says his name is Mervin McKean and that George Putman was always an alias. We're off the hook! Thank you Matt for getting us off the hook.
