GEORGIA

Census Reports

1820 – 1900

============

UPDATED AUGUST 20, 2022

Georgia was an original Crown Colony and contained the entire Southeast. In 1788 it became the Fourth State. Land Lotteries in the first part of the 1800s opened great opportunities for free land and a great many came down from the Carolinas to settle. This then forced the, then resident, Cherokee Indians further and further West. The 1820 census is the first census that remains. The earlier ones were destroyed in the War of 1812.

In the 1820 census males are broken down 0-9, 10-15, 16-18, 19-25, 26-44, 45 and older. Females are divided 0-9, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.

In the 1830 and 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.

From 1850 on ages and states of birth are shown. In the full 1880 census places of birth are listed for the person, their father and their mother. In the 1880 Soundex only families with children under 10 are listed. In the 1900 Soundex, all families are listed.

CHAS F. PUTNAM  Chatham County.

000001  20101. He is listed in Savannah. He should be George Frazier Putnam, son of Henry Putnam from Massachusetts. He will die here in Savannah in 1845. His dad Henry is number 1048 in Eben Putnam’s book on the New England line. Henry was born in Medford, Mass. and died in about 1815. Henry’s last wife and widow Priscilla Groom is presently in Putnam County. George never married that I am aware of, but he did take over guardianship of his brother James and sister Adeline when his dad died. But, I’m not really certain who all these other folks are.

000010  12000. This is Charles Putnam, son of Dr. Benjamin Putnam and Ann Malcolm. From Massachusetts via Savannah. Charles was born about 1797 in Savannah. A. (ANN) PUTNAM  Glynn County

301000  10201. This is Ann Sophia Malcolm, Benjamin Putnam’s widow. Benjamin is number 414 in Eben Putnam’s books. He was born in Danvers, Massachusetts August 26, 1751. He was a surgeon in the Revolution and then settled in Savannah in the later 1780s. He received a land grant in Georgia in 1805, and died shortly after that. Benjamin’s line goes back Benjamin > Henry > Eleazer > John > John Putnam from England.

JESSE PUTNAM  Habersham County

000001  00001. He is a son of James & Joice Putman from Union County South Carolina. He was born there in about 1773 and was in Union County in 1800. His wife was named Sarah, but I don’t have a last name. He’ll be in Bedford County Tennessee next. He will die there in September or October of 1833. His line goes back Jesse > James > Zachariah > Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas Putnam from England.

MARK PUTNAM  Habersham County

010010 00100. Marcus is a son of Jesse's brother Joseph Putman. He too is going to Tennessee where he will die shortly.

EZEKIEL PUTMAN  Hall County

220201  11110. He is Barnet Putman's son, and was born in Union County South Carolina in the early 1770s. He married Hannah Brazelton in Anderson County South Carolina in 1800 or 1801. About 1806, he went to Warren County Kentucky with his parents and brothers. He was there in the 1810 census. His brother Daniel moved up into Indiana, and Ezekiel and his brother Thomas moved back down to Hall County Georgia around 1817 or 1818. They will be here in 1830, and then move to Cass County about 1831. Hannah will die there in 1833, and he will marry Sarah Hesterly in 1835. Ezekiel will die in about 1845 and Sarah will be ‘missing’ by 1850. This line goes back Ezekiel > Barnet > Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas Putnam from England.

THOMAS PUTMAN  Hall County

320001 21010. He is another of Barnet's son, and Ezekiel’s brother. He was born in the late 1860s when the family was still in North Carolina. He then moved with them to South Carolina in 1773 and into Anderson County in the 1790s. He married Mary Barton there in about 1800. He was the first of the family to move into Kentucky, getting there around 1803-4, and was there in the 1800. He remained there till about 1817 when he joined his brother Ezekiel here in Hall County. Mary will die here in the early 1830s, and Thomas will die here in 1835. Some of the kids will be here in 1840 and a couple of others will be in Cherokee County. His line is the same as his brother Ezekiel’s.

PATMAN FAMILIES  Oglethorpe County

There are several Patman families here headed by David, John, William and James. They are here in 1830 and 1840 and then over in Floyd County by 1850 through about 1880. Several of the kids later moved to Texas. I didn’t see them at first until 1850. Confusion to me came then in 1850 when several of Ezekiel Putman’s sons moved into Cherokee County in the 1830s and then into the same area of Floyd County in the late 1840s. I started listing them as Putmans and possible kids of Ezekiel and his second wife. But a guy simply wouldn’t have two sons named, David, Elias, and James. I looked at the actual censuses again and the names not only looked like Patman, they were now indexed as Patman both in Georgia and later in Texas. No wonder I was confused. I have now, in 2008, simply erased all these families from the Putman Census stuff and as possibly connected to Ezekiel Putman. Whew!

PRISCILLA PUTNAM  Putnam County

100000  11010. She is Priscilla Croom, the second wife and now widow of Henry Putnam of Savannah. Another New England Family from Medford, Massachusetts via Charleston, South Carolina. Henry’s line is Henry > Eleazer > Henry > Eleazer > John > John Putnam from England.

In 1860, I find the daughter Minnie Hannah age 11 GA living with Mary Ann Burns age 26 GA. This may be Mary Ellen and she remarried and then became a widow again.
