GEORGIA 1950 CENSUS

In the 1940 census and especially now in the 1950 Census, the handwriting on the sheets is a bit better. But now that people are using Ancestry and Family Search and putting their family trees up on the sites, and the sites themselves have much better search engines and send you to a whole bunch of info docs and records. I now can find a family sheet on about everyone and many on the wife’s side. When I first started doing this in the very early 1970s, all that was available to see was up to the 1900. There was no such thing as on-line and the computers then were the size of a locker room. I had to drive out to Waltham, Massachusetts to the U. S. Library, beg for a film real of the dates and State I wanted and then look at it through a visual device in a back dark room and literally go page to page, county to county and write the info down on paper with a pencil. At that time, really the most people doing genealogy were older women, mostly retired school teachers in their 70s and 80s, who would send you hand written trees and info and stuff that they had back a couple of generations. Once in a while I would get an actual typewritten document. Wow! Got much better in the 1990s. Now it is soooo easy to get info you didn’t think was possible. Back in the 70s I tried calling folks, and got a hold of several who had info. Now just an e-mail can bring in a ton of info. Anyway, really enjoy these censuses, and if you can add or correct anything, please let me know so we can help others in their searches.

MERCER PUTMAN  Arlington, Calhoun County

This is interesting, and you’ll see that I can find anything on this guy or his wife. He is listed as being over 21 born in Georgia, his wife Mabel Arnette is also over 21, but born in Kansas. Then her sister Marian Wentworth is there and she is 81 KS and widowed. My guess is the census guy came around and Marian was the only one there. When asked for their ages, she wasn’t sure, and the census guy asked if they were over 21, and when she stopped laughing, she said “Yes they are.” My guess is all were in their 80s and I can’t find them anywhere. Next guess is he ain’t no Putman at all.

ELIZABETH PUTTMAN  Arlington, Calhoun County

She is 71 CT and a PITTMAN.

MARSHALL N. (NATHANIEL) PUTMAN  Carrollton, Carroll County

He is a farmer 67 GA and his wife Dora Austin is 67 GA too. He is a son of James Dawson Putman and Susan Chaney. He was with the family here in 1900, and married here by 1910, and here ever since. Line goes back to Ezekiel Putman who came down from South Carolina to Hall County Georgia.

ALFRED L. PUTNAM  Fort Benning & Lawson Air Force Base, Chattahoochee County

This one is listed as a female 17 and like all military folks, guys and gals, was born somewhere in the Universe. Probably on Earth, but no guarantee. Shame they refuse to give even a hint. Maybe he or she was manufactured right here on the base. Looks like they give females a guy’s name so she doesn’t get gang raped by real guys.

CHARLES G. PUTNAM  Fort Benning & Lawson Air Force Base, Chattahoochee County

He is 22 and like all military guys was born somewhere in the Universe.

GALEN M.PUTNAM  Fort Benning & Lawson Air Force Base, Chattahoochee County

I can’t find Eddie anywhere in 1930 or 1940. Found a family sheet for Laura and it says she was married to Pierce Putnum. So, the P. stands for Pierce but maybe he is a Putnum, not a Putnam. Then I found Department of Veterans affairs death file and he was Edward Pierce Putnam born April 19, 1912 and will die August 21, 1986. He was in the Army in 1942 and 1943 and was spelled Edward Pierce Putnam. But still can’t find him in an earlier census so I can’t figure his folks. Good Luck.

I don’t find them in 1910, but they are here in Atlanta in 1920 and in West Palm Beach, Florida in 1930 and she and the kids were back here by 1935 and here in 1940. In 1920 the kids state their dad was born in Ohio and mom in Louisiana so they may be Ed’s kids, but I’m not sure.
