1885 IOWA STATE CENSUS

 

This is a State not Federal Census, but the 1885 & 1895 are a huge help in filling the 20 year void in Federal Censuses from 1880 to 1900. The Official 1890 was taken but the records were later accidentally burned back in Washington archives in the early 1900s.

 

ADNEY PUTNAM  Carl Township, Adams County

He is a farmer 40 VT. His wife Emma Robinson is 37 VT and they have Minnie E. 16 VT, Walter A.11 IA, Ina M. 7 IA and Harry S. 4 IA. He is a son of Prentiss B. Putnam and Jemima Chase. He was born in Whittington, Vermont on May 12, 1844. He married Emma Robinson in Lee County and they were in Cass County in 1880, and moved here in the early 1880s. They are here in 1900 and Emma is widowed here in 1910. New England family.

 

WILLIAM PUTNAM  Douglas, Adams County

He is a miner 26 IL. His wife Rosa, Rosetta Earl, is 24 MI and they have Charles 7 MI and Franklin 3 IA. The Charles listed is really a stepson. Rosetta Earle had been married previously to a Sabins guy. Charles is a Sabins and listed so in 1900. William Addison Putnam is a son of Benjamin Putnam and Ellen Angeline Moore, and was shown at home in Champaign County, Illinois in the 1860 Census. His father, Benjamin, was born in New Hampshire, a son of Benjamin Putnam (1948) and Sarah Tenney. Rosetta is a second wife. He was earlier married to Eliza French in Stark County, Illinois. July 20, 1879. She was listed there alone with her kids from a previous marriage in the 1880 census. Must have been a divorce or he just left her. Only lasted a couple of months. He married Rosetta (Earle) Sabins in Cass County, Iowa January 26, 1880. They are in Lincoln County Nebraska in 1900 and 1910. About 1914, he took the family up into Tofield, Alberta, Canada and came back down here sometime in the mid 1920s. In 1930 they are back in Dawson County Nebraska. New England Family.

 

ELLEN PUTNAM  Washington Township, Adams County

She is 60 OH and has John 18 IN and James 31 IN with her. They live with David and Sarah Neal. Sarah 33 IN is her daughter. Ellen Angeline Moore is the widow of Benjamin Putnam. Benjamin was a son of Benjamin Putnam (1948) and Sarah Tenney. He was born June 20, 1819 in Lyndeborough, New Hampshire. They were in Champaign County, Illinois in 1860, and in Salem Township, Steuben County, Indiana in 1870. These three were in Poweshiek County in 1880.

 

EDWIN H. PUTNAM  Postville, Allamakee County

He is a painter 37 NY. His wife Martha is 26 IA and they have Eunice 3 IA and Harry 1 IA. He is a son of John and Hannah Putnam. He was at home in Winneshiek County in 1870 and here in 1880. John is number 2853 in Eben Putnam's books. He is a son of Malachi Putnam and Sarah Blount. He was born January 2, 1815 in Lowville, Lewis County, New York. Malachi was from Winchester, Massachusetts. They are here in 1900. There will be a divorce and Martha and the kids will be in Winneshiek County in 1910. Edwin will be in an Old Soldiers Home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1910. New England Family.

 

JOHN A. (ABRAHAM) PUTMAN  Chariton, Appanoose County

He is 51 VT a farmer. His wife Anna Briggs is 52 NY and they have Frances T. 14 IA, John P. 11 IA. There is a Louis Main 18 IN working for them. He is a son of John Glidden Putnam and Thankful Putnam (a Putnam cousin) from Springfield Vermont. They came out here in the 1860s. His mom died here in 1883 and his dad said to heck with this and went back to Vermont where he will die October 18, 1888 while playing the part of 'Farmer John of ye olden time' in a Harvest Festival Play. Gave it his all, I would guess.

 

JAMES R. PUTMAN  Cincinnati, Appanoose County

He is 36 IN and a plasterer. His wife Margaret Bell is 34 PA, and they have Laura 9 IA and Frank 3 IA. They were married here December 3, 1871. He is James Putman a son of Benjamin Putman and Melvina Baker from Linn County, Missouri. Before they went to Missouri, they were in Monroe County, Indiana where James was born. They are here in 1895, 1900 and on.

 

MARY E. PUTMAN  Franklin, Appanoose County

She is 34 OH and recently widowed. At home are Joseph 18 IA, Sophronia 15 IA, James 13 IA and Jesse 6 IA. Mary Elizabeth Nelson is the widow of William Putman. William was a son of Benjamin and Melvina Putman from Indiana and then Linn County, Missouri. They were in Appanoose County in 1870 and Adams County in 1880. He died April 15, 1882. In 1900, Mary is in Woods County Oklahoma living with her father Joseph Nelson (then 76 OH). Southern Putman Family.

 

ERNEST J. (JUDSON) PUTNAM  Fremont, Benton County

He is 21 IA working on a farm. He is a son of Benjamin Putnam and Samantha Purinton from Boone County. He was home there in 1870 and 1880. He will marry Rosella Dugan in Poweshiek County on September 5, 1892 and they are in Boone County in 1900 and 1910 and in Polk County in 1920 and 1930.

 

ALMA PUTNAM  Cedar Falls, Black Hawk County

She is 54 VT and still single. She lives with her sister Caroline Gay 62 VT and husband Jeremiah Gay. Both Alma and Caroline are daughters of Daniel Putnam and Pamela French of Bethel, Vermont. Daniel is listed Number 1202 in Eben Putnam's books. Daniel died here September 7, 1859.

 

GEORGE J. (JACOB) PUTNAM  Cedar Falls, Black Hawk County

He is 31 WI. His wife Ida Mae Huyek is 34 IL, and they have Fred B. Hewitt 15 IL, Frank Hewitt 12 IL and May E. (Ethel) 5 IA. George is a son of Jacob Putman and Mary Jane Marr from Waushara County, Wisconsin. He was home there in 1860 and 1870. He was married in Grundy County, Iowa in 1880. He and Ida are here in through the 1920, and George is widowed here in 1930. Fred and Frank are kids from Ida’s first marriage. Dutch family from New York.

 

JOHN & FRANK PUTNAM  Waterloo, Black Hawk County

John is 18 OH and Frank 16 OH. They live with their mother Cassie Cushman 42 OH and her husband Andrew Cushman 39 IL. These two guys were here in 1870 living with her and her then brand new second husband Andy. Cassandra McIlroy was married to Oscar Allan Putnam who died. Oscar was a son of Edwin C. Putnam and was at home in Allegheny City Pennsylvania in 1850 at age 15 PA. He married Cassie in Ohio. They came out here very recently and she married Andrew Cushman here. They are here in 1880 as well. They are all here in 1895 and John is married to Nellie Hubbard here in 1900. Don’t find Frank again though.

 

BENJAMIN PUTNAM  Peoples Township, Boone County

He is a farmer 55 NY, his wife Samantha Ellis Purinton is 47 NY, and they have Ernest 24 IA, Lewis 19 IA, Evie 17 IA, Benjamin 14 IA, Franklin 12 IA, Carrie 11 IA, and Cora 9 IA. Benjamin Augustus Putnam is a son of Harvey Putnam and Rebecca Steward from Barnard, Vermont and then Cherry Creek, New York. He was born September 31, 1830 in Wyoming County New York and married Samantha in Ellington New York October 11, 1854. They came straight out to Dallas County Iowa and were there in 1860, and have been here in Boone County from the mid 1860s on. He will die here June 14, 1896. Samantha goes into the 1900s, and will die here January 7, 1913.

 

MILTON PUTNAM  Peoples Township, Boone County

He is a farmer 27 IA. His wife Ida Theresa Sayles is 19 IL and they have Othie H. (Homer) 1 IA. Milton Augustus Putnam is a son of the above Benjamin and Samantha Putnam. He was born September 11, 1857 and married Ida March 24, 1883. They are here in 1895, and will all be in Tacoma Washington in 1900. Then they will get divorced and he will be back in Des Moines Iowa in 1910 and 1920 all by himself.

 

GEORGE PUTMAN  Byron, Buchanan County

He is 16 IA working on Robert Johnson’s farm. Looks like the son of George Putnam and Adelia Medbury from next door Linn County. He was home there in 1880 and not now.

 

PETER PUTMAN  Hazelton, Buchanan County

He is 42 NY. His wife Alice J. Teague is 36 ENG and they now have Charles 18 IA and Cora M. 15 IA. He is a son of Jacob D. Putnam and Hannah Lewis. He was born September 4, 1834 in Cato, Cayuga County New York. He married Alice out here February 17, 1866. She was born in Yorkshire England. They are here through 1900 in Jefferson County then. They are Dutch from Montgomery County, New York. In a book Genealogy of David Putman, I get "Peter Putman was born at Cayuga, N.Y., September 4, 1834.  In 1858 he went to Iowa, locating at Fairbanks, Buchanan County.  On July 15, 1861, after opening of the Civil War, he enlisted in the 5th. Iowa Regiment (Infantry), Co. C, and went to the front.  After his term of enlistment expired and having passed through all the dangers of war, he reenlisted at Larkinsburg, Alabama, in 1864, and remained in service until the last battle was fought and the Confederate Army surrendered." New York Dutch family.

 

HEZEKIAH PUTNAM  Coon Rapids, Carroll County

He is 68 NY a mechanic. His wife Aurilla Aylsworth is 59 NY and their daughter Hettie is 24 WI. Hezekiah is a son of Nathan Putnam, number 2206 and his first wife, Martha Williams of Colesville, Broome County, New York and Fairfield, Connecticut before that. He and he family have been in Racine County Wisconsin since the 1850s up through the 1880 census. They came over here recently and will go to South Dakota with his son Jay and family, and Hezekiah will die up there in 1893. New England Family.

 

JAY S. (SAMUEL) PUTNAM  Coon Rapids, Carroll County

He is a merchant 36 NY. His wife Rebecca Charlotte Sutton is 27 IA and they have Ky (Hezekiah) 7 IA, Orri (Orin Jay) 5 IA, Herbert A. 4 IA, John 2 IA and Lemuel less than a year old IA. Jay is a son of Hezekiah Putnam and Aurilla Aylsworth of Chenango County, New York. Jay was home there in 1850. In 1860 the family was in Yorkville, Racine County, Wisconsin and are now right here in Coon Rapids. Hezekiah is a son of Nathan Putnam, number 2206 and his first wife, Martha Williams. Jay will be in Custer County South Dakota in 1900 and 1910, and then head to Salem, Oregon by 1920. New Englanders.

 

JAMES PUTNAM  Cass Township, Cass County

He is 25 IA. His wife Eliza Jane Sexton is 26 IA and they have two daughters Marion 4 IA and Jessie 1 IA. He is James Rufus Putnam Junior, a son of James Rufus Putnam and his first wife Cynthia Ann Bradley. He was born in Dubuque County March 10, 1859 and was with the folks there in 1860 and in Warren County in 1870 and 1880. They are here in 1900 and Eliza will die September 15, 1904. He will marry Ulrica Thulin from Sweden here in 1905. They are here in 1910 and on. He will die in Griswold Cass County December 27, 1942 at age 83. Christmas was just too much that year. Ulrica will die here December 30, 1935 also after a hectic Christmas I guess.

 

WILLIAM PUTMAN  Fairfield, Cedar County

He is 24-26 OH single and working on a farm. The age is VERY hard to read. Hope he is a Putman or Putnam though.

 

ALBERT C. (CALVIN) PUTNAM  Spring Township, Cherokee County

He is a farmer 42 NY. His wife Electa Ann Brown is 39 IN. They have Della A. 11 IA, Charley A. 9 IA, George L. 3 IA and Harry O. 1 IA. Kids were all born in Guthrie County where they were shown in 1880. He is a son of Calvin Putnam (#2848) and Mary Chase from Lowville, Lewis County New York and Vermont before that. His dad was a son of Malachi Putnam (#1285) and Sarah Blount. He was born in Lewis, Lewis County New York on December 16, 1842. He will die in Edgemont, Fall River County South Dakota October 29, 1915. His wife Electa Ann Brown was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana May 15, 1845 and will die in Hot Springs, Fall River County South Dakota August 26, 1938. They were in Carroll County Iowa in 1870, Guthrie County in 1880. In 1900 they are in Custer County South Dakota and then Fall River County South Dakota after that till they die.  New England family.

 

LEVI S. PUTMAN Clinton, Clinton County

He is 46 NY and his wife Julia Ann is 60 NY. He is a railroad engineer as he was here in 1880. They were here in 1880 and are through 1900. He is a son of Victor George and Sarah Ann Putman from Johnstown, Fulton County, New York. . He was born in Oneida County, New York April 12, 1839 and will die here in Clinton September 16, 1911. He was at home there in the 1850 Census. New York Dutch Family.

 

EFFIE E. PUTNAM  Adel, Dallas County

She is 9 IA and lives with Daniel 60 OH and Elizabeth Nealley 61 OH who I think are her grandparents. In 1880 she was with her folks, Rethran (?) and Tamar Putnam in Madison County. They were here in Davis County in 1870 and Effie was born here. I think the Nealleys are Tamar’s parents. They were all from Ohio.

 

ELIJAH F. (FULTON) PUTMAN  Bloomfield, Davis County

He is 51 IL a farmer. His wife Nancy Ellis Brennan is 46 KY. They have at home still Eva 26 IA, Henrietta 20 IA and a housekeeper Mary Taylor 37 OH. He is a son of Elijah Putman and Elizabeth Duff from Fulton County Illinois and then here. He was born here June 17, 1833 and will die in Bloomfield on February 27, 1914. Nancy died there August 24, 1910. Southern Putman Family.

 

ELIZABETH PUTMAN  Bloomfield, Davis County

Elizabeth Duff is the widow of Elijah Putman who died here in 1863. She is now 87 KY and is living with her married daughter Lucinda Caraway 46IL and husband Henry Caraway and their family. Elizabeth will hang in here until January 24, 1887 at almost 90 years of age.

 

VERNON PUTMAN  Bloomfield, Davis County

He is 27 IA a clerk in a grocery store. His wife Ella Spencer is 27 IA. They are living with her widowed mother Evaline Spencer 68 PA. He is a son of Elijah Fulton Putman and Nancy Brennan from here. They are in Washita County, Oklahoma in 1900, and in Pawnee County, Oklahoma in 1910. They are in Los Angeles in 1920 and 1930 and he owns a retail grocery store in Glendale. Southern Putmans.

 

ABIGAIL PUTNAM  Fabius, Davis County

She is 69 NY and lives with a Vanderkirk family. She is Abigail Raesin and was married to Chauncy Putnam from Massachusetts. They were in DeKalb County Indiana in 1860 and Appanoose County Iowa in 1870. No ideas yet who he was.

 

JASPER N. (NEWTON) PUTMAN  Lick Creek, Davis County

He is a farmer 41 IL, Eliza Jane Grant his wife 37 OH, Della 17 IA, Harry 15 IA, Willard 13 IA, Olive 12 IA, Duff 10 IA, Maud 9 IA, Anne 6 IA, Daisy 4 IA and Clyde 2 IA. He is a son of Elijah Putman and Elizabeth Duff from Fulton County Illinois and then here. Jack as he was called was born on June 2, 1843 in Fulton County. He married Elizabeth Jane Grant here on November 5, 1867. Jasper or Jack died September 8, 1907 and is buried in Lick Creek, Iowa. Elizabeth is widowed here in 1910 and 1920 and is in Los Angeles in 1930 with her daughter Olive at age 82 OH. His dad Elijah was my Reding Putman’s brother and both were sons of Daniel Putman from South Carolina. Southern Putman Family.

 

HENRY H. (HAROLD) PUTNAM  Delaware Township, Delaware County

He is listed as 52 NY.  His wife, Elvira Ann Stanclift, is 47 NY. The children at home are: Herbert H. 13 IA, Edward A. 10 IA, Louis J. 6 IA and Edith E. 4 IA. He is a son of David Pease Putnam and Nancy Alcott and was born January 6, 1832 in Lee, Oneida County New York. His dad was from Connecticut. Elvira is the daughter of John and Rhoda Stanclift. She was born September 12, 1837 in Collins, Erie County New York and then came out here to Delaware County with her folks in the 1850s. He will die here in Delaware Iowa May 31, 1910.

 

DAVID A. (ARCHIBALD) PUTNAM  Dubuque, Dubuque County

He is a grocer 34 WI, his wife Mary Ann is 36 SCOT and they have Archie (David Jr.) 6 IA, Harry 2 IA and Florence 1 IA. They are here in 1895 and 1900. Then Mary will die and he will marry Nellie White in 1908, and be here in 1910 and 1920. Anyway, he is a son of George Putnam and Catherine Scleithe and was born in Tazewell County Illinois and then was with his folks in Grant County Wisconsin in 1860, whole family is missing in 1870 and then he was here just married in 1880. They are here in 1900 through 1920. His second wife Nellie is widowed here in 1930

 

MARION PUTMAN  Dubuque, Dubuque County

He is 28 IA, his wife Hattie 24 IA and they have Leona Laura 1 IA. He is Marion William or William Marion Putnam, a son of George Putnam and Catherine Scleithe, and was born about the time his folks moved from Tazewell County, Illinois to Grant County, Wisconsin. He was there in 1860. He just married Harriet May 3, 1882. He will be here with Harriet in 1900 and 1910 and then by himself here in 1920. Dutch Family out of New York.

 

ELLIOTT PUTNAM  Fairfield, Fayette County

He is 33 IL single and working on James Flower’s farm. He is Alfred Elliot born in Warsaw, NY December 9, 1851. He is a son of Lucien B. Putnam and his first wife Esther Foster. He is shown there in Fairfield, Fayette County, Iowa in 1870. He will marry Caroline Nus on April 27, 1887, and they are in Clayton County in 1895 and 1900. They will be back here in Fayette County in 1910 and 1920. New Englanders.

 

LUCIAN PUTNAM  Fairfield, Fayette County

He is a farmer 61 NY, His wife Cynthia Crosby is 56 NY and they have Estelle 11 IA. He is a son of Edward Putnam, and his first wife Rachel Horton of Grafton, Vermont. Lucien was born in Warsaw, Wyoming County, New York. They were in Winnebago County, Illinois in 1860 and here by 1870. Cynthia will die here in 1889. He then married a widow, Mrs. Phoebe Thomas who died in 1896. He is living with her son George Thomas in 1900 in Buchanan County. He is 76 then and didn’t make it to 1910. New England Family.

 

AMOS W. (WHITNEY) PUTNAM Charles City, Floyd County

He is 43 WI his wife Jennie Antoinette Morrison is 32 WI. He is a traveling salesman. He is a son of Aaron Putnam and Elvira Rosina Smith from Vernon, Waukesha County Wisconsin. He was born there October 19, 1841. His dad was a son of Jonathan Putnam and Abigail Burton from Wilton, New Hampshire. Jonathan is number 1845 in Eben Putnam’s book. He and Jennie are in Ogden, Utah in 1900 and he will die there September 24, 1909. There is also a dual listing for them in the next entry.

 

AMOS PUTNAM  Floyd, Floyd County

He is listed as Azor or something, but is Amos Whitney Putnam listed right above. Dual listing. He is a traveling salesman 42 NY (WI) and his wife Jennie Morrison is 32 IL. They/he are boarding. Probably just him on a business trip when the census taker made his rounds. Probably best to just forget this one.

 

MARSHALL PUTNAM  Pleasant Grove, Floyd County

Marshall Danforth Putnam is listed as 31 MI, born in March of 1854. His wife, Betsey Jane Sneath, is 32 NJ, born in January of 1853. The children are: Della 6 IL, born in July of 1878, Frederick Benjamin 2 IA, born in March of 1883, George Washington, 1 IA, born in October of 1884. Marshall is a son of Benjamin Franklin Putnam and Alma Stone Johnson. He was born in La Grange, Cass County, Michigan on March 12, 1854. Betsy is the first of his three wives. This family was in Owen, Winnebago County, Illinois in the 1880 census, and here in 1895. They are in Pottawattamie County Iowa in 1900. He will then head to California and die in Pomona Los Angeles County in 1943. His line goes back from Benjamin to Uzziel Putnam and Mary Trask from New York, via Vermont and then Massachusetts before that.

 

D. PUTNAM  Rockford, Floyd County

He is 65 WI, his wife Margaret 55 WI, and Cora 12 IA. This is a weird listing. Probably Daniel Putnam and Mary Jane Wilkins. Ages are off, but they were here with Cora in 1880 and Mary is widowed here in 1895 through 1920. Daniel is a son of Daniel Putnam (1834) and Rebecca Jane Carleton from Massachusetts and was with them in Rock County WI in 1850.

 

CHARLES PUTMAN  Reeve Township, Franklin County

He is 39 NY, his wife Ann Briggs is 38 ENG. They have Alvira 18 IA, Alva 16 IA, Erva (Charles Ervin) 11 IA, Percival 9 IA. He is a son of David and Malinda Putman from Jefferson County New York. They were there in 1850 and 1860 and in Jackson County, Iowa in 1870. Dutch Family from New York.

 

ABRAHAM H. (HOWARD) PUTMAN  Hamburg, Fremont County

He is 66 IN and his wife Elizabeth R. Moran is 64 MD and they have Julia 38 IA, Augustus 28 IA and Clara 11 IA. He is a son of Elijah Putman and Elizabeth Duff. Abraham was born on March 8, 1818. He married Elizabeth R. Moran (born in Maryland February 24, 1820) in Canton, Illinois on March 7, 1839. They were in Davis County, Iowa in 1860, and in Schuyler County, Missouri in 1870, and then off to Fremont County, Iowa by 1880. Elizabeth will die here August 31, 1896. He will be here with his son Howard in 1900 at age 82, and will die July 11, 1914 in Aurora, Illinois. Southern Putman Family.

 

HOWARD PUTMAN  Hamburg, Fremont County

He is 35 IA, his wife Emma Jane Headley is 27 IA. They have Pearl 10 IA, Mertie 8 IA, Minnie 6 IA, Otto 4, IA, Walter 2 IA and Lula less than a year IA. They are here through 1920 and he is widowed here in 1930. He is a son of Abraham H. Putman and Elizabeth Moran from Davis County, and grandson of Elijah Putman and Elizabeth Duff. GEORGE PUTNAM  Colfax, Grundy County

He is a mechanic 29 MA, his wife Nellie King is 27 NH and they have Roy 4 IA and should have Martha 1 IA who wasn’t listed. George William is a son of George Putnam and Martha Blackstone from New Hampshire. In 1860, he was at home with them in Kingston, Linn County, Iowa. George Senior was a son of Gideon Putnam from New Hampshire. He will stay here in Iowa and die in Madison County October 14, 1918. New England family.

 

AUSTIN H. (HERBERT) PUTNAM  Webster, Hamilton County

He is 31 MA a mechanic. His wife Ida May Lyfoire is 30 NH and they have Harold L. 1 IA. He is a son Israel Herbert Putnam (2021) and Sarah Caroline Putnam. They are from Danvers Massachusetts and were there in 1880 and will be back by 1900 and he is widowed there in 1920.

 

GEORGE PUTNAM  Concord, Hancock County

He is a bookkeeper 30 MA, single and boarding. He should be George Frederick Rice Putnam a son of Franklin Putnam and Mary Rice from Reading Massachusetts. Franklin was number 1810, a son of Joshua Putnam (748) and Betsy Baker of Houlton, Maine. George was born in Reading on June 24, 1854. He was with the family in Reading in 1860, and in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1870. He will marry Anna in Cook County, Illinois March 9, 1887. They are in Clayton County Iowa in 1900 and Bottineau County North Dakota in 1910 and 1920.

 

ALLEN PUTNAM  Eldora, Hardin County

He is 45 NY, his wife Phoebe Southard is 29 IA and they have Howard 5 IA, Erle (Earl) 4 IA, Helen 2 IA and Clara less than 1 IA. He is a son of Josiah and Lydia Shaw Putnam and was born in Bethany, Genesee County, New York. He was with a bunch of his brothers back in 1870 in Grundy County, Iowa, and just married to Phoebe in 1880 here in Hardin County. They are here in 1885 through 1910 and Phoebe is widowed here by 1920. New England family.

 

PHILLIP D. (DODDERAGE) PUTNAM  Center Township, Henry County

He is now a retired schoolteacher 74 CT. His wife Isabella Crothers is 64 OH and they have Horace C. 29 OH (express messenger) and Emma 26 OH a teacher. Also here is Isabella’s sister Anna E. Crothers 66 OH. Philip was born March 2, 1810 in Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut. His parents were Philip Putnam (Number 1847 in Eben's book) of Wilton, New Hampshire, and Anna Brown of Hartford, Connecticut. In 1850 Philip was in Washington Court House, Fayette County, Ohio and was a teacher. I would guess Philip's first wife died about then, as his daughter Mary was with neighbors or possibly relatives then. He then married Isabella J. Crothers in Fayette County, Ohio August 18, 1850. The family will remain here. Horace their son will become the Sheriff of Henry County. Horace lists himself now as being widowed and has a son Phil C. (Phillip Crothers) 4 IA with him. I don’t have his first wife’s name. He will marry Louise Magdfrau in 1892 and they are here in 1900 and 1910.

 

CHARLES PUTNAM  Crosses, Howard County

He is a painter 26 IA. His wife Clarinda DeGroff is 20 WI and they have Olive less than a year IA. He married CIarinda October 14, 1880 1860 through 1880, he was here with his widowed mother Martha Jones from Norway. Martha Jones was married to Hiram F. Putnam from New York. I have no idea as to Hiram’s folks. He married Martha in Wisconsin in the late 1840s. Charles and Clarinda are here in Vernon Springs in 1900 and his mother Martha is still with him in 1910 at age 82.

 

ROBERT PUTNAM  Des Moines, Jasper County

He is a farmer 62 KY, his wife Elizabeth Prunty is 47 IL and they have George 12 IA, Ella 10 IA, Josie (Phoebe J.) 8 IA, Delilah 4 IA. The kids were all born here in Jasper County. Robert was a son of Reding Putman (my gg grandfather) and his first wife Stacey Combs. He was born in Putman Township (named for Reding the first settler), Fulton County, Illinois on December 16, 1823, and made the trip to Arkansas with his family in 1836. He then went to Illinois where he married Elizabeth on May 27, 1857 in Morgan County Illinois. They were there in 1860 and here by 1870. Robert will die in Prairie City, Iowa May 30, 1892. Elizabeth is widowed here in 1895 and 1900. Then she and the kids are in Spokane Washington in 1910. Elizabeth will die in Spokane, Washington September 22, 1913. Southern Putman Family.

 

HOWARD PUTNAM  Monticello, Jones County

He is 40 IA and a foreman in a creamery. His wife Margaret Jane Kline is 40 VA and they have John 19 IA and Ada 15 IA. They were here in 1870 and 1880. He is a son of James Rufus Putnam and Cynthia Ann Bradley, and was born December 14, 1844. He married Margaret Jane Kline February 18, 1863. She will die here September 21, 1886, and Howard will marry Sarah Ann Livingston on January 12, 1888. They are here through 1920. Howard will die July 8, 1924 and Sarah on October 13, 1926. New England Family.

 

R. A. (RUFUS AUSTIN) PUTNAM  Monticello, Jones County

He is 60 MA single and boarding. He is Rufus Austin Putnam junior, son of Rufus Austin Putnam and Frances Highborn Porter of Fitchburg, Mass. He was born in March 1826. He will be here through the 1900 census. He never married.

 

SIMON PUTMAN  Jackson Township, Lee County

He is Simon Kenton Putman 47 OH and his wife Hulda P. Singleton is 46 IL. At home are Frederick 24 IL, James 11 IA, Frank 7 IL. He is a son of Elijah Putman and Matilda Kenton from Champaign County Ohio and the Brown County Illinois. Simon was born in Mad River Township Ohio on January 6, 1839. He served in the Civil War as a Lieutenant in the 3rd Illinois Cavalry. He married Huldah Singleton January 20, 1859 in Mount Sterling Illinois. She was born October 2, 1838 and died January 7, 1907. They were in Mt. Sterling in the 1860, and in Ray County, Missouri in 1870. They were back in Brown County in 1880 and here now and in 1895 and 1900. He died April 26, 1906 in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska. Southern Putman family.

 

FLORA & BERNICE PUTNAM  Cedar Rapids, Linn County

Flora is 16 WI, Bernice 7 IA. They live with Louisa Everette 35 OH. She is the widow of Fred Putnam from New York. In 1870, they were in Milton, Rock County Wisconsin. She was widowed here in 1880.

 

HAZEAL PUTMAN  Cedar Rapids, Linn County

He is a cooper 58 IL. His wife Lydia Miller is 57 OH. They have at home Charles 26 IL (a cooper like his dad. A cooper by the way makes barrels and stuff), Louise or Lois 25 NH who is Charles wife and they have Elsie just born IA. He is indexed as Israel, but is the son of William and Alla Putman. He was born on October 21, 1826. He remained in Fulton County, Illinois after the rest of the family went to Arkansas. He lived in Buckhart Township on the original farm of William and Allie. He was there during the Civil War as his sister Lavina went there to live while her husband was in a Yankee Prison. They were in McDonnough County, Illinois in the 1860s and then in Tazewell County Illinois by 1870 and here in Linn County Iowa by 1880. He will die here in 1891, Lydia in 1912. WILLIAM S. (SKINNER) PUTNAM  Cedar Rapids, Linn County

He is 38 NH, his wife Maggie Gibbons 38 IN and Irene G. 17 IA. He is William Skinner Putnam, a son of Gideon Putnam and Sarah Rice. He was born in Nashua, New Hampshire. He was here in 1880 and was a teacher. I never new he was married. He was single here in 1880 and will be in 1895. Then by 1910 and 1920 he will be in an Old Soldier Home in Marshall County. Irene would be a daughter of Maggie in a prior marriage. This one didn’t work out as he is single again in 1895 and on. There is a Maggie Gibbons Putnam in a cemetery in Warren County who died in 1893. William will die February 10, 1921 in Marshall County Iowa.

 

CHARLES B. (BERNARD) PUTNAM  Marion Township, Linn County

Charles Bernard Putnam is listed as 42 MI.  His wife Esther Carroll is 40 NY.  The children are: Clarence 14 MI, Nellie 12 MI, Charles C. 9 IA, and Freddie O. 7 IA.  Also in the household is their stepson Loren A. Collins 14 MI. He was previously to Nettie Phillips who had been married to Albert Collins. This family was in Eaton County, Michigan in 1870. Charles will still be here in 1900, but will be married to a widow, Laura Smith. They were divorced and Esther is still in town, but in her own house. Charles is a son of Orlin L. Putnam and Caroline Brown. He was born in Clarendon, Calhoun County, Michigan. He was at home there in 1860 in Eckford, Calhoun County. His folks are from New Hampshire and then New York.

 

CHARLES E. (EDWARD) PUTNAM  Marion Township, Linn County

He is a bank clerk 45 NH and his wife Mary Ellen Fawcett is 38 OH. They have Frank H. 18 IA, Carrie E. 15 IA. He is a son of Gideon Putnam and Sarah Rice. He was born in Nashua, New Hampshire July 10, 1839. He served in the Civil War from here in Iowa, and rose to rank of Captain. This family was in Mount Vernon, Linn County in 1870 and in Marion, Linn County in 1880. He will be here until he dies in 1913. Mary Ellen will die the following year. He was in Marion Township in 1860 through 1880. They are in Rapids Township in 1900.

 

SARAH PUTNAM  Marion Township, Linn County

She is 48 IL and widowed. She is a nurse. Her daughter Laura is 18 IA. She has been widowed here since 1870. Can’t find her in 1860, but was probably in Wisconsin where her first son Martin was born in 1861. The husband was born in Ohio at any rate.

 

HENRY PUTNAM  Wheeler, Lyon County

Henry is listed as 53 CAN.  His second wife, Elizabeth Beaudette, is 38 CAN. They were married in Quebec in 1865. He was first married to Rose King and was here in Clayton County in 1860 with her. The children at home are: Mary L. 17 IA, Joseph L. 14 IA, Margaret A. 13 IA, Addie M. 11 IA, Alfred A. 9 IA, Lucy Ann 5 IA Charles C. 3 IA and Cecilia R. 1 IA. Based on the children's ages and birthplaces, Henry was here in 1870, but was not listed in the Index. Henry will die here in 1893, and Elizabeth will be widowed in Sioux County in 1900. The son Joseph will be in South Dakota by around 1910. Henry was born April 18, 1830 in St. Johns, Quebec just across the border from Vermont. He was born with the name Patenaude, and was listed as Henry Putnode in Westford, Chittenden County, Vermont in 1850. Rose was living two houses away at that time. Probably because there were several Putnams in Westford, he changed or had anglicized his name to Putnam sometime in the 1850s while in Vermont. Not a Putnam at all.

 

ISRAEL PUTNAM  Perry Township, Marion County

He is a tinsmith 26 IA and single. He was born in Jasper County May 16, 1858. He is a son of Robert Putman and Elizabeth Prunty from Jasper County. His dad will die in 1892 and Israel will be back with his mom in 1895. That’s the last I find him. Maybe died in the Spanish American War. Robert was a son of Reding Putman and Stacey Combs from Fulton County Illinois. Reding was my gg grandfather. Southern Putmans.

 

GEORGE PUTNAM  Jefferson, Marshall County

He is a farmer 25 IA and his wife Emma Lukehart is 19 IA. George is a son of Naham Daniel Putnam and Mary Spake from here. He will be here till he dies in 1917. Emma is widowed here in 1920.

 

NAHAM D. (DANIEL) PUTNAM  Jefferson, Marshall County

Spelled this was now but Nahum in 1880. Not sure which is right. Anyway, he is 52 OH. His wife Mary Spake is 51 OH. Edgar 23 IA and Grace 14 IA are at home. He is a farmer. He's been here a while, a son of Daniel Baldwin Putnam. He was born in Sandusky, Huron County OH, moved to Cass County MI where his dad used to live, and then the family came here in 1854. They are here in 1895, and then will go up into Logan County, Colorado and be there in 1900. They will then return here to Marshalltown, and both will die here in 1902.

 

GOYNE M. (McCOY) PUTMAN  Osage, Mitchell County

He is a farmer 63 PA. His wife Lavinia Babcock is 62 NY, and they have at home Florence J. 30 IL a teacher, Emmett 28 IL a musician, Herbert 18 IL, Mabel 18 WI. In 1850 and 1860 he was in Laona, Winnebago County, Illinois, which lies directly below Rock County, Wisconsin. He’s only moved a few miles since then. In 1850, he lived right along side his folks John W. and Minerva Putnam. He was born in North East Township, Erie County, Pennsylvania. In 1830, his folks are in Batavia, Genesee County, New York. They moved to Ontario, Canada and then to Illinois in the 1840s. By 1900, they will be in North Milton Precinct, Umatilla County, Oregon. New England Family.

 

HENRY EDSON PUTMAN  Osage, Mitchell County

He is 21 IL and a farmer. His wife Ella May is 19 WI, and they have Estelle less than a year IA. He is indexed Harry Adam, but looks like Henry or Harry Edson. At any rate, he is a son of Goyne M. and Lavinia Putman who are here in town too. He has been listed just as Edson up till now.

 

WILLIAM J. (JACKSON) PUTNAM  Ashton, Monona County

He is a farmer 65 VT. His wife Sarah Weaver is 60 VT. There is Gertrude Bowman 5 IL with them. He is a son of William Putnam (1694) and Esther Hubbard from Windham County, Vermont. He has been there through the 1870. He married Sarah Isabella Weaver in Rockingham Vermont in 1847. They have been in Peoria County Illinois from the 1870s through the 1880 census. New Englanders.

 

CHARLES F. (FRANCIS) PUTNAM  Soldier Township, Monona County

He is a farmer 26 MI. His wife Nancy Margaret Ballantyne is 21 IA and they have Ethel G. 4 IA and Elsie M. 2 IA. He is a son of Eri Carlton Putnam and Eliza Goodrich from here in town. New Englanders Massachusetts to New York to Michigan to here.

 

DENNISON PUTNAM  Omega, O’Brien County

He is a farmer 36 NY. His wife Josephine Boyles is 37 PA. They have Lewis 13 IA, Martha 9 IA, Edson 7 IA and his twin Addie 7 IA, Frank 4 IA and Thomas 1 IA. He is a son of William Rodman Putnam and his first wife Mary, He was born in Phoenix, Oswego County New York. The family came out to Hardin County Iowa in the 1860s. His dad was a son of Jedidiah Putnam and Lois Cheeseborough from Preston Connecticut. He is here in 1900 and 1910. He will die here in 1918, Josephine in 1921.

 

EDWIN PUTNAM  Garfield, Plymouth County

He is 51 VT and now widowed. He has Minnie 13 MO, May 11 MO. He is Edwin Josiah Putnam, a son of Harvey Putnam and Rebecca Stewart of Chautauqua County, New York. He was born September 14, 1832 back in Bethel, Vermont just before the family moved to Cherry Creek, New York. He married Lydia Fidelia Clark in New York on July 17, 1855. They moved out to Missouri about 1868. He was in Boone County Iowa in 1880 with a new wife Catherine who has died. I don’t find him in 1900, but he will be in Louisiana with yet another wife Susan in 1910. New England Family.

 

JOHN B. PUTMAN  Portland, Plymouth County

He is 20 IA a farmer. His wife Madeline is 23 IA. He would be the son of George Cornelius Putman and Adelia Medbury. He was home with them in Linn County in 1870 and 1880. George is a son of Barney and Margaret Putman from Mount Morris, Livingston County. This is a Dutch Family out of Montgomery County New York.

 

AUGUSTUS D. (DAVID) PUTNAM  Center Township, Pottawattamie County

He is a farmer and widowed as he was here in 1880. He is 52 NH. Still at home are Arthur L. 10 IA and Katie J. 7 IA. He also has a family of Haley people, and the widowed mother is his housekeeper. He is David Augustus Putnam, a son of George Putnam and Elizabeth Perkins, and was born in Charlestown, Sullivan County, New Hampshire. His brothers, George McIntire Putman and Lucius Putnam, are here in town too. He will be here in 1900 and die in the next decade.

 

LUCIUS PUTNAM  Center Township, Pottawattamie County

He is 45 NH and still single as is his sister Belle 35 VT. His widowed mother Elizabeth 75 NH is still with them. He is a son of George Putnam and Elizabeth Perkins. He was born in Charlestown, Sullivan County, New Hampshire. The family then moved to Orange County, Vermont by the 1850 census. In 1860 they were in Dixon, Lee County, Illinois and in Ogle County, Illinois for the 1870. They were here in 1880 and his dad had died sometime in the 1870s.

He is a hired hand, 30 NY and single.

He is a teamster 27 IL, his wife Mary is 26 IA and they have Ida 6 IA. He is a son of Victor and Sarah Ann Putman from New York. He was born in Lee County Illinois in 1858 and was there in 1860 through 1880. In 1900 they were in Stanton County Nebraska. He and Mary are here in Council Bluffs in 1910 and 1920. John is widowed here in 1930. Dutch family originally from Montgomery County New York.

 

HARVEY C. (CORNELIUS) PUTNAM  Deep River, Poweshiek County

He is 59 VT a farmer. His wife, Sarah Ann Steward, is 55 NY.  The children at home are Katie 19 IA, Charles 16 IA, William 12 IA. His dad Harvey Senior 86 VT is living with them.  Harvey will be here in Iowa until his death June 17, 1909. Sarah will die here February 5, 1911. He is a son of Harvey Putnam and Rebecca Steward and was born on October 19, 1825 back in Bethel, Windsor County Vermont. His father Harvey was a son of Joshua Putnam and Lucy Lothrop. Harvey Senior was number 2664 in Eben's numbering system. According to Eben’s book, Harvey Senior died July 24, 1888 back in Cherry Creek New York, but I’ll bet it was more likely out here. New England family of course.

 

MERTON A. (ADELBERT) PUTNAM  Jackson Township, Poweshiek County

He is 27 IA born right here. His wife Alice Annette Blakely is 25 IL and they have Fred E. 1 IA. He is a son of Harvey Cornelius Putnam and Sarah Stewart. He was born in Poweshiek County and was there in 1860 to 1880 with his folks. They are in Plymouth County in 1895, Palo Alto County in 1900, and are in Mahaska County in 1910 and Keokuk County in 1920 and 1930. New England family out of Vermont.

 

WALTER & CLYDE PUTNAM  Redding, Ringgold County

Walter is 9 IA, Clyde 6 NE. They live with Robert and Sarah Hillhouse. Sarah Ockerman 29 IA is their mother. Sarah was married to Samuel Deloss Putman. He was a son of John Putman and Mary Meek. John was part of that huge family in Huron County, Ohio in 1840, 1850. In 1860 they were in Mercer County, Missouri and they were in Decatur County Iowa in 1870. John was born in Otsego County, New York, and was a son of David and Mary Putman from Madison County, New York. David was a son of George Putman and Mary Ferguson of Montgomery County, New York. Sam and Sarah were in Furnas County Nebraska in 1880. They returned to Decatur County, Iowa and he died there August 1, 1881. Sarah will be with her son Walter in Jasper County, Iowa in 1900. Clyde will be in Johnson County, Iowa in 1900 and in 1920. Dutch Family from New York.

 

PHILLIP W. PUTNAM  Blue Grass, Scott County

He is 50 NY single and boarding. He is a merchant and has been here since the 1860s. He never married. He was born in November 1837 in Root, Montgomery County, New York, and never married. He is a son of Abraham Putman and Hannah Osborne from Tribes Hill, Montgomery County, New York. Dutch family. He is here in 1900 too.

 

CHARLES E. (EDWIN) PUTNAM  Davenport, Scott County

He is a lawyer 59 NY. His wife Mary Louisa Duncan is 53 PA. They have Henry St. Clair 23 IA student, William Clement 22 IA a law clerk, George Rockwell 19 IA law student, Elizabeth Dunkin 17 IA student, Edward Kirby 15 IA student, Benjamin Risley 13 IA student. He is a son of Benjamin Risley Putnam and Eunice Morgan from Saratoga Springs New York. He was born there February 19, 1825. He is doing quite nicely. He is a lawyer, President of the Davenport Savings Bank, President of the Board of Education, President of the Academy of Sciences and lots of other nice things. He will die here on July 19, 1887, but his wife Mary will carry on the Arts and Science stuff and will be here going strong in 1900. New England family.

 

WILLIAM PUTMAN  Davenport, Scott County

He is a carpenter 26 IA. His wife Annie Gillian is 28 PA and they have Mary Frances just born here. He is a son of Abraham H. Putman and Elizabeth Moran of Bloomfield, Davis County. Abe was a son of Elijah Putman and Elizabeth Duff. Southern Putman family. They were here in 1885, and are here in 1900 and 1910. Anna Gillian, his wife, will die here in 1917, and he will die here October 15, 1935.

 

ANDREW PUTMAN  Winfield, Scott County

He is 28 IA and born here. But in 1880 he was single here and said he was born in Germany. His brother Francis is 26 IA. No ideas yet as to the folks. He will be married in Rock County, Minnesota by 1900, though kids were born here in Iowa in the 1880s. His wife Annie will be widowed with the kids in Richland County, North Dakota in 1910 and 1920.

 

HORACE PUTNAM  Sheridan, Sioux County

He is a farmer 34 VT and his wife Mary Burke is 35 NY. Children are Dennis 9 IA, Elizabeth 7 IA, George 5 IA, Mary 3 IA and Horace 1 IA. He is a son of Henry Putnam and Rose King. Remember Henry was born with the name Patenaude, and was listed as Henry Putnode in Westford, Chittenden County, Vermont in 1850. Rose was living two houses away at that time. JAMES PUTNAM  Sheridan, Sioux County

He is 23 MS single and boarding. There are a couple of guys that would fit age wise, but 2 were married by 1882 and one went to Texas with his folks. Then he could be Massachusetts or Missouri not Mississippi. Not sure.

 

PHILENA PUTNAM  Oneida, Tama County

She is now 85 NY still living with her daughter Lucinda Campney 42 PA and family. She is Philena Buck widow of William Witt Putnam from Bethel, Vermont. The family including Lucinda was in Erie County, PA in 1840 and 1850. That’s where Lucinda was born. New Englanders.

 

JONATHAN PUTNAM  Salt Creek, Tama County

He is Jonathan Southwick Putnam a bible agent 51 NY. His wife Mary Elizabeth Colsgrove is 34 NY (age hard to read), and Laura C. 17 IA. John is a son of John Putnam and Sarah Maria Southwick from Essex County New York. He was married to Julia Almira Cooley there in 1860 and here in Jackson County Iowa in 1870. In 1880 Julia was still there by herself and John has remarried. Laura was a daughter of his with Julia. New England family.

 

JAMES M. PUTNAM  Spring Creek, Tama County

He is a druggist 38 IL. His wife Harriet Maude White is 26 WI and they have Mabel J. 2 IA. Also here is Harriet J. Stearns 61 NY who is Maude’s twice widowed mother. He is a son of James Putman and Letha Darnell from Mount Sterling, Brown County, Illinois. He was born in March of 1851. They were at home in 1850, and then both of the folks died in the mid 1850s. He and his brother William Arthur were both taken in by Letha’s brother William Darnell, and were in Hancock County, Illinois in 1860. He was a farmer until 1877 when he became a druggist in Holland, Grundy County, Iowa. In 1881 he married Maud White daughter of Julian and Hattie White. Maud was born March 31, 1858 and she died November 23, 1904. James died January 9, 1913 in Lakefield, Minnesota. They are in Grinnell Township, Poweshiek County, Iowa in 1900. HENRY H. (HARRISON) PUTNAM  Benton Township, Taylor County

He is 44 VT. His wife Cornelia Ann Chamberlain is 36 NY.  The children are: Jason P. (Prentiss) 15 IL, Flora Belle 13 IL, Etta E. 12 IL, Irving E. (Ellsworth) 6 IA, Charles H. (Henry) 4 IA and Clyde C. (Chester) 1 IA. They were married in Amboy, Lee County, Illinois on November 18, 1868. Henry was born in Somerset, Windham County, Vermont on August 20, 1840. He was a son of Prentiss B. Putnam and Jemima Chase of Whittingham, Windham County. Prentiss' folks were Levi Putnam and Hannah Allen of Sutton, Massachusetts. They are here the rest of their lives. Henry will die here in 1911, Cornelia in 1928.

 

SIDNEY C. (CHASE) PUTNAM  Benton Township, Taylor County

He is a farmer 42 VT. His wife Josephine A. Smith is 42 VT and they have Cora A. 13 IL, Alta J. 12 IL, Edwin S. 9 IA, George E. 1 IA. He is a son of Prentiss B. Putnam and Jemima Chase of Whittingham, Vermont. He was born in Wardsboro, Vermont November 6, 1842. He was here in 1880 and probably in Lee County Illinois near his brothers in 1870. They are here in 1900 and 1910 and he is widowed here in 1920.

 

ASA PUTNAM  Palmyra, Warren County

He is 31 IA, and his wife Sarah Ellen Pyle is 32 IN. They have Charles E. 10 IA. Asa Lloyd is a son of James Rufus Putnam and his first wife Cynthia Ann Bradley. He was born April 6, 1854. They are here in 1900 and 1910, and in Hartford Township in 1920, and Richland in 1930. The son Charles was born April 27, 1874. He will marry Myra Belle Seevers, and they are here in 1900 through 1930.

 

ALBERT PUTNAM  Palmyra, Warren County

He is a farmer 34 IA born in Dubuque. His wife Catherine Nancy Pyle is 32 IN. They have Antonia 12 IA, Laura 10 IA, Wilbur 8 IA, Albert 5 IA and Thomas 1 IA. Albert is a son of James Rufus Putnam and his first wife Cynthia Ann Bradley. He was born in Dubuque March 16, 1850 and will be here till he dies April 4, 1943.

 

CHARLES PUTMAN  Marion, Washington County

He is 27 IA, his wife Mina Jane Bellevue is 28 IA and they have Nellie 3 IA and Oral a son less than a year IA. He is a son of Jacob G. Putman Junior and Ellen Edmundson from Hampshire County Virginia. They are here in 1895, 1900 and 1910. Mina is widowed here in 1920. This is a German Family, Maryland to Virginia to here in Iowa about 1854.

 

JACOB PUTMAN  Marion, Washington County

He is 37 VA. His wife Lucy Ellen Reeves is 25 IA and they have Stacie E. 10 IA and Indiana 6 IA. He is Jacob Putman III, a son of Jacob G. Putman Junior and Ellen Edmundson from Hampshire County Virginia. They are here through 1920. German Family.

Putman Junior and Ellen Edmundson from Hampshire County Virginia. He married Rosetta Whitsel on November 20, 1881. They are here in 1900 and 1910. Mary will die here in 1914, John in 1934. He is living with his widowed dad who will die here in July 1894. Mary’s widowed father Isaac Whitsel 73 OH lives next door.

He is 32 IA, his wife Laura B. Essley is 26 IA, and they have Rachel 8 IA, Vergie (Virginia) 4 IA and Cleva (Cleveland) a daughter less than a year old. He is another son of Jacob G. Putman Junior and Ellen Edmundson from Hampshire County Virginia. He was born March 28, 1849. He married Laura Essley here in 1876. He is here in 1900, but I don’t find him later. German family.

 

GLEN H. (HOWARD) PUTNAM  Warren Township, Wayne County

He is a Congregational Preacher 32 NY and single. His widowed mother Letitia 54 NY is a music teacher and is with him. He is a son of Glen Putman and Letitia Paulison from Glen, Montgomery County New York. He was born there January 31, 1852. They were in New York City in 1860. Then Glen and his mom were in Union City New Jersey in 1880. Glen will marry Mary Ann Lewis and be in Jo Davies County, Illinois in 1900, Hamilton County, Iowa in 1910 and Lee County, Illinois by 1920. Glen will die there in 1924. Dutch Family.

 

CHARLES PUTMAN  Wright Township, Wayne County

He is Charles Marion Putman 18 IA single and working on William Branham’s farm. He is a son of William Marion Putman and Mary Jane Hayes and was born here September 18, 1866. He will marry Ivy Alice Gordon here in 1889 and they are here the rest of their lives. Southern Putman family from Fayette County Indiana and Kentucky then Virginia before that.

 

JOHN S. (SIDNEY) PUTNAM  Fort Dodge, Second Ward, Webster County, Iowa. 

He is an engineer 53 NY, his wife Eliza Colegrove 48 NY, son in law Ernest F. Green a shoemaker 21 NY, married daughter Hattie Green 17 Born in Allamakee County. Also here is Mary Green 48 NY who should be Ernest's mom. John Sidney Putnam is the son of Leonard Putnam and Sarah Kelly. He was born in May 1829 in Chautauqua County, New York. While the rest of his family settled in Crawford County, Pennsylvania John Sidney moved west. He was in Clayton County, Iowa in 1870, Mower County, Minnesota in 1875 and then in Allamakee County, Iowa in 1880. John Sidney and Eliza's son Clarence is already off on his own in Plymouth County, Iowa right now. By the time John Sidney next appears in Erie County, Pennsylvania 1900 his wife and both children are dead. In 1911 John Sidney will be living in a National Homes for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers. He will list his grandson as John S. Putnam of Portsmouth, Virginia. His line is John Sidney > Leonard > John > Jonas > Asaph > Isaac > Edward > Thomas > John. New England family.

He is a farmer 43 NY. His wife Emma Jane Dean is 31 NY, and they have Bertha 12 IA, Hattie 11 IA, Leonard Ray 6 IA. His widowed mother Hannah 66 NY and his brother Charles S. 40 NY a carpenter are with them. He is a son of John and Hannah Putnam, and was here in 1870 with them. John is number 2853 in Eben Putnam's books. He is a son of Malachi Putnam and Sarah Blount. He was born January 2, 1815 in Lowville, Lewis County, New York. Malachi was from Winchester, Massachusetts. They are here in 1895 and Emma is widowed here in 1900 through 1930 when she is 77 years old.

 

FRANK PUTNAM  Decorah, Winneshiek County

Frank Southwick Putnam is 28 NY a traveling salesman.  His wife Prudie S. Morrison is 26 IA. Gertie M. is 6 IA and Gracie M. 3 IA.  He is a son of John Southwick Putnam and Julia Almira Cooley from Crown Point, Essex County, New York. He was shown at there in 1860. They will be here in 1900, as will his widowed mother Julia. New England Family.

 

WILLIAM PUTTMAN  Liston, Woodbury County

He is 23 IA and his wife Maggie Sevening is 20 GER. Two of her brothers and family are next door. William was born in Military Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa in March of 1861. He was there in 1880. They are in Carroll County Iowa in 1895, and then in Jackson County Illinois in 1900. His father was Barnard Puttmann, born in Prussia. In 1850, Barnard was in Burlington, Racine County, Wisconsin with a wife named Gertrude from Germany and his father John who was 64 at that time.

He is 44 GER, his wife Christina Florkie is 42 GER, and they have Charley 12 IA, Lewis 10 IA, Rudolph 6 IA and Amanda 2 IA. The kids were all born in Scott County. Also here are his older sons William 21 GER, Louis 17 GER and Frederick 18 GER. Also here is Christine Florkie 16 GER. He is a son of Barnard and Gertrude Puttmann from Germany. Part of the German Puettman family.

He is a traveling salesman 35 NH, his wife Anna C. Rice is 34 OH and they have Harry 8 OH and Eugene 1 IA. He is a son of Henry Harrison Putnam (#2790) and Clementine Permelia Lovering from Croyden, New Hampshire. They were in Bureau County, Illinois before he moved to South Dakota and then here. He is president of Durston-Putnam Crockery Company and will be here till about 1894. They were in Union County South Dakota in 1880. They are in Adair County Missouri in 1900 and Los Angeles County California in 1910 and 1920.

He is a son of Prentiss B. Putnam and Jemima Chase. He was born in Whittington, Vermont on May 12, 1844. He married Emma Robinson in Lee County and moved here in the early 1870s. They are here in 1900 and Emma is widowed here in 1910. New England family.

 

JAMES R. PUTMAN  Cincinnati, Appanoose County

He is 45 IN and a plasterer. His wife Maggie Bell is 44 PA and they have Frank M. 12 IA and Merle 2 IA. They were married here December 3, 1871. He is James Putman a son of Benjamin Putman and Melvina Baker from Linn County, Missouri. Before they went to Missouri, they were in Monroe County, Indiana where James was born. Folks moved around a lot in those days.

He is a plasterer 24 IA. His wife Minnie B. Wilson is 23 IA. He is a son of William A. Putman and Mary Elizabeth Nelson. His folks were married here in 1865 and James was born here in 1870. Then the family was in Adams County in 1880. He married Minnie B. Wilson on May 5, 1892. He fought in the Spanish American War in Cuba, and in 1899 was one of the 13 founders of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Association. Interesting fella. William is a son of Benjamin Putman and Melvina Baker from Indiana and then Linn County, Missouri. James will be here in 1900, in Texas County Oklahoma in 1910, and back in Wayne County Iowa in 1920 and 1930, Southern Putman family.

 

WILLARD PUTMAN  Franklin, Appanoose County

He is 22 IA born here and his wife Bertha E. Burr is 19 IA also born here in Appanoose County. He is a son of William Putman and Mary Elizabeth Nelson. William was a son of Benjamin and Melvina Putman from Indiana and then Linn County, Missouri. He was in Appanoose County, Iowa in 1870. Willard just married Bertha here on April 8, 1894. They are here through the 1930 at least. Southern Putman Family.

 

ISRAEL PUTMAN  Lincoln, Appanoose County

He is a Methodist Preacher 36 NY single and boarding. He is a son of Aaron Putnam and Jane Ormsby from Peru, Clinton County New York. He was home there in 1860 and 1870. I don’t find him in 1880, but in 1900 he is way out in Lake County Oregon still preaching and single. In 1920 he is still single, still preaching in Whitman County Washington at age 62.

 

JOHN A. (ABRAHAM) PUTNAM  Taylor, Appanoose County

He is 61 VT, and his wife Anna Briggs is 55 NY. Their son John W. 23 IA is still at home. He is a son of John Glidden Putman and Thankful B. Putnam from Montpelier, Vermont. He has been here since 1869. They are here in 1900 and 1910. By 1900 the son John will be married to Mary Miller and they are here through 1910 and then they’ll get divorced. Mary is here in 1910 through 1930. Young John has a new wife Myrtle and they are in Converse County Wyoming by 1920.

 

GEORGE J. (JACOB) PUTMAN  Cedar Falls, Black Hawk County

George is 40 WI, his wife Ida M. Huyek is 44 IL, and they now have Ethel M. 15 IA born in Grundy County and his brother Albert Putman 25 WI is with him. George is a son of Jacob Putman and Mary Jane Marr from Waushara County, Wisconsin. He was home there in 1860 and 1870. He was married in Grundy County, Iowa in 1880. He and Ida are here in 1900 through 1920, and George is widowed here in 1930. I don’t find Albert after this. Dutch folks.

 

JOHN PUTMAN  Waterloo, Black Hawk County

He is 29 OH. He popped up here at age 3 in 1870 with his mother Cassie McIlroy and her new second husband Andrew Cushman. He will marry Nellie Hubbard and they will be here in 1900. Don’t find him later though unless he is the guy in Los Angeles in 1910 living alone but says married. Cassandra McIlroy Cushman was married to Oscar Allan Putnam who died. Oscar was a son of Edwin C. Putnam and was at home in Allegheny City Pennsylvania in 1850 at age 15 PA. He married Cassie in Ohio. They came out here and she married Andrew Cushman here..

She is 57 IL. She is here in 1900 with her married daughter Laura Couch.

 

MILTON A. (AUGUSTUS) PUTNAM  Boone County

He is 36 IA born in Polk County, his wife Ida T. Sayles is 29 IN and they have Othie Homer 10 IA, Oliver Ray 8 IA, Berthie Ellis 6 IA. He is a son of Benjamin Augustus Putnam and Samantha Ellis Purinton from here. He was born September 11, 1857 and married Ida March 24, 1883. They will all be in Tacoma Washington in 1900. Then they will get divorced and he will be back in Des Moines Iowa in 1910 all by himself. The rest of the family is still up there and will be.

 

CHARLES J. PUTMAN  Hazleton, Buchanan County

He is 27 IA, his wife Elsie Wells is 24 WI and they have Everett 2 IA. He is a son of Peter Putman and Alice S. Teague and was born January 11, 1867 in Fayette County Iowa. Both he and his folks were in Buchanan County from 1870 on. He and his folks are in Fayette County in 1900 and 1910. In 1920 he is widowed and in Linn County and his widowed mother Alice is with him. LEWIS PUTMAN  Coon Township, Buena Vista County

He is 28 IA born in Boone County December 24, 1865. His wife Martha A. Pray 27 IA born in Marion County, And they have Demia 5 IA, Earl Francis 3 IA and Cora M. 1 IA. He is a son of Benjamin Augustus and Samantha Putnam and was with them in Boone County in 1870 and 1880. He married Martha E. Pray in Boone County on June 12, 1888. They are here in 1900 and 1910. Martha will die after 1910 and by 1920 he will be here with a new older wife Anna who had been married to a Smith guy before this.

He is 24 WI. He is a son of John Hamilton and Basheba Putman from Montgomery County New York. Bert will move to Shawano County soon and is joined with the following Fred Putnam who has married his sister Della

He is 30 IL, his wife Della Putman (Dutch Putman father and a Mohegan Indian Mother) 31 WI, and Della V. 5 IL, Steven H. 3 WI and Elard E. 1 WI. He is a son of Stephen Putnam and his first wife Caroline Wheeler from Winnebago County, Illinois. New England line. Della is a daughter of John Hamilton and Basheba Putman from Montgomery County New York. Basheba was a Stockbridge Mohegan Indian and so Della is Indian as well. John Hamilton is on the Dutch line and is here in the County now. Fred and the family are in Chickasaw County in 1900. They are in Shawano County Wisconsin in 1910, 1920 and 1930. They are on an Indian Reservation there.

 

ULYSSES G. (GRANT) PUTNAM  Greenfield, Calhoun County

He is 31 born in Boone Co Iowa, his wife Clara Wells is 34 IA and they have Lloyd 7 IA born right here. He is a son of Benjamin Putnam and Samantha Purinton, and was with his folks in 1870 and 1880 in Boone County, Iowa. He married Clara Wells in Polk County on November 19, 1884. She will die November 27, 1897, and he will marry Nackey Early November 16, 1898. They are in Dallas County in 1900 through 1920.

He is 33 IA and his wife Maggie Sevening is 31 GER. They have Catherine 9 IA, Martha 8 IA, William 6 IA, and Frank 2 IA. William was born in Military Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa in March of 1861. He was there in 1880. They are in Jackson County Illinois in 1900. His father was Barnard Puttmann, born in Prussia. He is 26 IA and has his widowed mother Martha L. Reynolds 71 NY. He is a son of William Rodman Putnam from Oswego County New York. They came out here and were in Hardin County when Fred was born. William died here January 8, 1876, and Mary will die on March 17, 1897. Fred will be married to an Eve here in 1900 and they are in Stevens County, Minnesota in 1910.

He is 43 NY. Caroline Nus his wife is 33 IA, Ernest 6 IA, Arthur 5 IA, Bertha 2 IA. He is a son of Lucien B. Putnam and his first wife Esther Foster. He is shown there in Fairfield, Fayette County, Iowa in 1870. He married Caroline April 27, 1887. They are here in 1900, and they will be back in Fayette County in 1910 and 1920.

 

LEVI PUTMAN  Clinton, Clinton County

He is 57 NY, his wife Julia 68 PA. He is a son of Victor George and Sarah Ann Putman from Johnstown, Fulton County, New York. He was at home there in the 1850 Census. He was born in Oneida County, New York April 12, 1839 and will die here in Clinton September 16, 1911. Levi and Julia were here in 1880 on. They are here in 1900.  He is part of the New York Dutch Putmans.

 

FULTON PUTMAN Bloomfield, Davis County

He is 58 IL, his wife Nancy Ellis Brennan is 56 KY and they have Henrietta 30 IA at home. Elijah Fulton is a son of Elijah Putman and Elizabeth Duff from Fulton County Illinois and then here. He was born here June 17, 1833 and died in Bloomfield, Davis County on February 27, 1914. Nancy died there August 24, 1910. Southern Putman family.

 

JASPER N. (NEWTON) PUTMAN  Lick Creek, Davis County

He is indexed as Joseph 52 IL. His wife Elizabeth Jane Grant is 48 OH and they still have Maud 19 IA, Anna 17 IA, Daisy 15 IA, and Clyde 13 IA. He is a son of Elijah Putman and Elizabeth Duff from Fulton County Illinois and then here. Jack as he was called was born on June 2, 1843 in Fulton County. He married Elizabeth Jane Grant here on November 5, 1867. Jasper or Jack died September 8, 1907 and is buried in Lick Creek, Iowa. Elizabeth is widowed here in 1910 and 1920 and is in Los Angeles in 1930 with her daughter Olive at age 82 OH. His dad Elijah was my Reding Putman’s brother and both were sons of Daniel Putman from South Carolina. Southern Putman Family.

 

HENRY PUTNAM  Delaware Township, Delaware County

He is 62 NY, his wife Elvira Ann Stanclift is 57 NY, Edwin 20 IA, Louis 17 IA and Edith 14 IA all born here in Delaware County. He is a son of David Pease Putnam and Nancy Alcott and was born January 6, 1832 in Lee, Oneida County New York. His dad was from Hartford, Connecticut. He was born January 6, 1832. Elvira was born September 12, 1837. They were married here September 3, 1865. Henry will be here until he dies May 31, 1910.

 

BESSIE PUTNAM  Lincoln, Douglas County

She is 14 and born here in Dallas County. Rand Putnam did some nosing around and thinks she is Eva Bessie Putnam daughter of Luther and Nelly Putnam. Not sure who Luther or Fred Luther is???

 

DAVID A. (ARCHIBALD) PUTNAM  Dubuque, Dubuque County

He is 42 IL (is WI OH OH in 1900) and his wife Mary is 38 SCOT. They have Archie (David A. Jr.) 15 and Florence 10 both born here in Dubuque. They were just married here in 1880. He is a grocer. They are here in 1900 and then Mary will die and he will marry Nellie White in 1908 and be here in 1910 and 1920. Anyway, he is a son of George Putnam and Catherine Scleithe and was born in Tazewell County Illinois and then was with his folks in Grant County Wisconsin in 1860, whole family is missing in 1870 and then he was here just married in 1880. They are here in 1900 through 1920. His second wife Nellie is widowed here in 1930. His brother William Marion is in town too.

 

GEORGE P. PUTNAM  Dubuque, Dubuque County

He is 45 IL, his wife Mary Reuter Schmidt is 33 Luxemburg, Mary 11 IA, Winifred 10 IA, Charles 9 IA and William 6 IA. Kids were born in Jackson County. They are in Plymouth County in 1900 and back here in Dubuque by 1910. He is a son of Jacob Putnam and Eliza Wicks from Jackson County. Jacob is a son of Philip Putman and Christina Lucretia Nobles from St. Johnsville, Montgomery County, New York. They are part of the New York Dutch Putman family.

 

MARION PUTNAM  Dubuque, Dubuque County

He is 39 WI and his wife Harriet is 35 MO. They have Laura 12 born here in Dubuque. He is William Marion Putnam, a son of George Putnam and Catherine Scleithe, and was born about the time his folks moved from Tazewell County, Illinois to Grant County, Wisconsin. He was there in 1860 and here in 1885. He will be here with Harriet in 1900 and 1910 and then by himself here in 1920. His brother David is in town too.

 

MARTIN A. PUTNAM  Dubuque, Dubuque County

He is 33 WI and his widowed mother Sarah Jane 57 IL is with him. He just pops up with her in Linn County Iowa in 1870 and no ideas as to his dad.

 

PETER PUTNAM  Oilwein Township, Fayette County

He is 52 NY, his wife Alice S. Teague is 45 ENG. He is a son of Jacob D. Putman and Hannah Lewis from Montgomery County, New York. They came here in the 1850s and were in Buchanan County in 1860. They are here in 1900 and 1910 and Peter is widowed here in 1920 at age 87. Not bad! Dutch Putman family.

 

MARSHALL PUTNAM  Pleasant Grove, Floyd County

Marshall Danforth Putnam is listed as 41 MI, born in March of 1854. His wife, Betsey Jane Sneath, is 42 NJ, born in January of 1853. The children are: Della 16 IL, born in July of 1878, Frederick Benjamin 11 IA, born in March of 1883, George Washington, 10 IA, born in October of 1884, and Harry Deloss 7 IA, born in November of 1887. Marshall is a son of Benjamin Franklin Putnam and Alma Stone Johnson. He was born in La Grange, Cass County, Michigan on March 12, 1854. Betsy is the first of his three wives. This family was in Owen, Winnebago County, Illinois in the 1880 census, and here in 1885. They are in Pottawattamie County Iowa in 1900 and back in Floyd in 1905. He will then head to California and die in Pomona, Los Angeles County in 1943. His line goes back from Benjamin to Uzziel Putnam and Mary Trask from New York, via Vermont and then Massachusetts before that.

 

MARY J. (JANE) PUTNAM  Rockford, Floyd County

Mary Jane Wilkins is the widow of Daniel Putnam. They were here in 1870 and 1880. She is now 61 NJ. Daniel was a son of Daniel Putnam (1834) and Rebecca Jane Carleton from Massachusetts and was with them in Rock County WI in 1850. Mary is here still widowed in 1900 through 1920.

He is 48 NY, his wife Anna Briggs 46 ENG, Alice or Alvira 27 IA, Seven (Charles Ervin) 21 IA and Perry 19 IA. He is a son of David and Malinda Putman from Jefferson County New York. They were in 1850 and 1860 and in Jackson County, Iowa in 1870. they have been here since the 1880. Dutch Family from New York.

 

GREENE MARION PUTMAN  Hamburg, Fremont County

He is 59 IL, his wife Mary Elizabeth Kelsey is 58 IN, and they have at home Cora 23 IA and Maggie 16 IA. He is a son of Elijah Putman and Elizabeth Duff from Fulton County Illinois and then here in Davis County Iowa. Greene Marion Putman was born April 12, 1835. He married Mary Elizabeth Kelsey on August 21, 1854. She was a daughter of Joseph Kelsey and Rebecca Stevens. They were married in Iowa and remained there until 1858 when they moved to Mercer County, Missouri. They were back here in Fremont County by the 1860s. Greene will die here September 12, 1896, and Mary will die February 1, 1899. There are grave markers there in Hamburg, Iowa to that effect. Southern Putman Family.

He is 45 IA born Davis County January 1851. Emma Jane Headley his wife is 40 IA. They have Pearl 21 IA, Myrtle 19 IA, Minnie 17 IA, Otto 15 IA, Walter 13 IA, Luetta 11 IA, Howard 9 IA, Essie 7 IA, and Ada 2 IA. Whew! And they will have another daughter Zelma in August 1895. He is a son of Abraham H. Putman and Elizabeth Moran from Davis County, and grandson of Elijah Putman and Elizabeth Duff. Southern Putman Family.

 

O. (OMER) A. PUTMAN  Locust Grove, Fremont County

He is 29 IA born in Davis County and his wife Maggie Reich is 29 IL. They have Glen 6 IA, Phillip 4 IA, Mary 3 IA and Ross just born. He is a son of Greene Marion Putman and Mary Elizabeth Kelly from Davis County and now out here. He was born Bloomfield, Iowa October 3, 1865 and home in 1870. In 1900 he is in Gilcrest, Cheyenne County, Nebraska near his brother Frank. His wife was Maggie Reich born in Illinois in February 1866. I don’t find them in 1910, but in 1920 Omer is in Flathead County Montana and says he is widowed. Maggie is in Kitsap County Washington in 1920 and also says she is widowed. Looks like they split up to me. The sons are all in Montana with their dad in 1920 and 1930. Southern Putman Family.

He is 76 IN, his wife Elizabeth Moran is 71 MD. Their unmarried daughter Julia Ann 49 IL is with them. He is a son of Elijah Putman and Elizabeth Duff. Abraham was born on March 8, 1818. He married Elizabeth R. Moran (born in Maryland February 24, 1820) in Canton, Illinois on March 7, 1839. They were in Davis County, Iowa in 1860, and in Schuyler County, Missouri in 1870, and then off to Fremont County, Iowa. Elizabeth will die here August 31, 1896. He will be here with his son Howard in 1900 at age 82, and will die before 1910. Southern Putman Family.

 

GEORGE W. (WILLIAM) PUTNAM  Melrose, Grundy County

He is 40 MA, his wife Helen Nellie King is 40 NH, Roy 14 IA, Mattie 11 IA and Francis 6 IA. George is a son of George Putnam and Martha Blackstone from New Hampshire. In 1860, he was at home with them in Kingston, Linn County, Iowa. George Senior was a son of Gideon Putnam from New Hampshire. He will stay here in Iowa and die in Madison County October 14, 1918. They are there in 1900 and 1910.

 

ALLEN W. PUTNAM  Eldora, Harden County

They aren’t listed but were here in 1880 and 1885 and will be in 1900 and 1910. He would be 56 NY, Phoebe Southard his wife 49 IN and they have several of kids. He is a son of Josiah and Lydia Shaw Putnam and was born in Bethany, Genesee County, New York. He was with a bunch of his brothers back in 1870 in Grundy County, Iowa, and just married to Phoebe in 1880 here in Hardin County. They are here in 1885 through 1910 and Phoebe is widowed here by 1920. New England family.

He is 48 MI, his wife Julia S. Gordon is 47 WI, and they have William 16 MI and Fauchon 7 MI. He is a son of Orlean Putnam and Amelia Vanderhoof from Cass County, Michigan. He was at home there in 1850, and married there in 1880 They are I LaGrange, Harrison County in 1900. In 1900 the daughter Fauchon will be an inmate in the Institution for Feeble Minded Children in Glenwood, Mills County Iowa. Julia will be widowed by 1910 and will be with her sons Frank and William in Little Rock, Arkansas. This line goes Charles > Orlean > Uzziel > Uzziel > Amos > John > Nathaniel > John.

 

HORACE C. (CAROTHERS) PUTNAM  Mount Pleasant, Henry County

Horace isn’t listed for some reason, but his kids are. Anyway Phillip C. is 14 IA, Isabelle 3 IA and Helen born in December 1894 IA are listed. Horace has been here since the 1860s and will be in 1900 and 1910. He is the County Sheriff here. He is a son of Philip Dodderage Putnam and Isabel Carothers from Fayette County, Ohio. PHILLIP D. (DODDERIDGE) PUTNAM  Mount Pleasant, Henry County

He is now 84 IA (actually it is CT) he is widowed as his wife Isabel Crothers has died in the late 1880s. His daughter Emma 39 IA is with him. Philip was born March 2, 1810 in Windsor, Hartford County, Connecticut. His parents were Philip Putnam (number 1847 in Eben's book) of Wilton, New Hampshire, and Anna Brown of Hartford, Connecticut. In 1850 Philip was in Washington Court House, Fayette County, Ohio and was widowed. He married Isabella J. Crothers in Fayette County, Ohio August 18, 1850.

 

CHARLES PUTNAM  Crosses, Howard County

He is a painter 26 IA. His wife Clarinda DeGroff is 20 WI and they have Olive less than a year IA. He married CIarinda October 14, 1880 1860 through 1880, he was here with his widowed mother Martha Jones from Norway. Martha Jones was married to Hiram F. Putnam from New York. I have no idea as to Hiram’s folks. He married Martha in Wisconsin in the late 1840s. Charles and Clarinda are here in Vernon Springs in 1900 and his mother Martha is still with him in 1910 at age 82.

 

ELIZA PUTNAM  Bellevue, Jackson County

Eliza Wicks is the widow of Jacob Putman. Been here since the 1860s. They returned to Carroll County Illinois in the 1880s and Jacob died there around the late 1880s and she returned here about 1890. She is now 65 NY. Jacob was a son of Philip Putman and Christina Lucretia Nobles from St. Johnsville, Montgomery County, New York. She is here in 1900 and then will die before 1910. This is the New York Dutch Putman family.

 

JACOB PUTMAN  Bellevue, Jackson County

He is 32 IL, his wife Elizabeth Vandanacker is 31 IA and they have George 9 IA, John 8 IA and Grace 5 IA. He is Jacob Junior son of Jacob Putman and Eliza Wicks from here in Jackson County. He was born September 4, 1862 when the family was in Carroll County Illinois. He married Lizzie here November 16, 1883. They are here in Bellevue all their lives. She will die here November 17, 1937 and he will die here January 18, 1958. New York Dutch Family.

 

OSCAR PUTMAN  Bellevue, Jackson County

He is 39 IL, his wife Arminda Jane Savage is 34 IL and they have Hattie 17 IA, Jacob 15 IA, Miranda 12 IA and Mary 10 IA. He is yet another son of Jacob Putman and Eliza Wicks. He was born October 5, 1855 in Carroll County Illinois. He married Arminda here January 23, 1876. He will be here till he dies on Christmas Day 1907. In an Obituary from the Bellevue Leader, “Oscar Putman, died after being put off the train, as he had no ticket.  He was returning to Bellevue, Iowa, from Green Island, Iowa.  He had slept through the Bellevue stop earlier, and was trying to return there.  The conductor is said to have put Oscar off the train, before he was given a chance to explain what had transpired.  Oscar was put off around 10:30 P.M., and was found about 6:30 A.M the next day.  He was found about three miles down the track, badly bruised and severely injured.  It would seem that Oscar had either been beaten by someone, or possibly he had been hit by another train.”

 

ELIZABETH PUTMAN  Des Moines, Jasper County

She is Elizabeth Prunty the widow of Robert Putman who died in Prairie City, Iowa May 30, 1892. She is 58 KY (should IL) and has Israel 37 IL, George 22 IA, Ella 20 IA, Josephine 18, Delila 15 IA with her. They are here in 1900 and then she and the kids are in Spokane Washington in 1910. Elizabeth will die in Spokane, Washington September 22, 1913. Robert was a son of Reding Putman (my gg grandfather) and his first wife Stacey Combs. He was born in Putman Township (named for Reding the first settler), Fulton County, Illinois on December 16, 1823, and made the trip to Arkansas with his family in 1836. He then went to Illinois where he married Elizabeth on May 27, 1857 in Morgan County Illinois. They were there in 1860 and here by 1870. Southern Putman Family.

 

HOWARD PUTNAM  Monticello, Jones County

He is 50 born in Dubuque County Iowa. His second wife Sarah Ann Livingston is 45 IA. He is a son of James Rufus Putnam and Cynthia Ann Bradley, and was born December 14, 1844. He married Margaret Jane Kline February 18, 1863. She died here September 21, 1886, and Howard married Sarah Ann Livingston on January 12, 1888. They are here through 1920. Howard will die July 8, 1924 and Sarah on October 13, 1926.

 

RUFUS A. (AUSTIN) PUTNAM  Monticello, Jones County

He is 69 MA. He is Rufus Austin Putnam junior, son of Rufus Austin Putnam and Frances Highborn Porter of Fitchburg, Mass. He has been here since the 1850s and still is in the 1900 census. Doesn’t look as if he ever married.

 

SIMON PUTMAN  Jackson Township, Lee County

He is Simon Kenton Putman 57 OH and his wife Hulda P. Singleton is 55 IL. At home are Iris 21 IL and Frank 17 IL. He is a son of Elijah Putman and Matilda Kenton from Champaign County Ohio and the Brown County Illinois. Simon was born in Mad River Township Ohio on January 6, 1839. He served in the Civil War as a Lieutenant in the 3rd Illinois Cavalry. He married Huldah Singleton January 20, 1859 in Mount Sterling Illinois. She was born October 2, 1838 and died January 7, 1907. They were in Mt. Sterling in the 1860, and in Ray County, Missouri in 1870. They were back in Brown County in 1880 and here in 1885 and will be in 1900. He died April 26, 1906 in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska. Southern Putman family.

 

C. B. (CHARLES BERNARD) PUTNAM  Marion, Linn County

He is now 52 MI and wifeless for the second time. Ester Carroll and he are divorced and he will soon marry another widow Laura Smith and be with her here in 1900. Charles is a son of Orlin L. Putnam and Caroline Brown. He was born in Clarendon, Calhoun County, Michigan. He was at home there in 1860 in Eckford, Calhoun County. His folks are from New Hampshire and then New York. He is here with Laura in 1900 through 1920, and is widowed with his married daughter in Buchanan County in 1930 at age 87.

He is 19 IA a son of Charles Bernard Putnam and his second wife Esther Carroll from Eaton County Michigan and then here in the 1870s. He is probably living with his dad and two brothers listed above. He will marry Alva Hanson next year and be here in 1900 and in Whitman County Washington in 1910 Idaho in 1920 and Spokane by 1930.

He is 35 IL, his wife Lois is 32 NH and they have Essie 11 born here in Linn County. He is a son of Hazeal Putman and Lydia Miller (William and Alla Putman’s son) from Fulton County, Illinois and then here in Linn County in 1880. By 1920 he is still in Cedar Rapids but with a second wife named Winifred. In 1930 he is with his married daughter Essie in Santa Barbara California. Southern Putman Family.

He is now 48 NH. He is William Skinner Putnam, a son of Gideon Putnam and Sarah Rice. He was born in Nashua, New Hampshire. He was here in 1880 and was a teacher. In 1910 and 1920, he will be at The Old Soldier's home in Marshall County, Iowa. He was briefly married here in 1885.

 

JOSEPH PUTNAM  Wheeler, Lyon County

He is 24 IA, his wife Nellie Weir is 21 MN and young James 1 IA. He is a son of Henry Putnam and Elizabeth Beaudette from here in Lyon County. His folks were from French speaking Canada. His dad died here in 1893, and his widowed mom will in Sioux County in 1900. Joe is here in 1900 and 1910 and in South Dakota by 1920.

She is 19 IA born here. She is a daughter of Rethvan and Tamar Putnam who were here in 1880.

 

WILLIAM PUTNAM  Knoxville, Marion County

He is 48 IA, his wife Mary Ann Rizor is 46 IA and they have Loren Rezin 16 IA, Birdie (Verda) 12 IA and Chester 8 IA at home. William Franklin is a son of James Rufus Putnam and Cynthia Ann Bradley. He was born September 1, 1846 in Dubuque Iowa and married Mary here September 19, 1866. Mary was born in Ohio July 22, 1848. She will be here till she dies August 24, 1926 and he will die July 15, 1934. He served in the 21st. Iowa Volunteer Infantry from August 5, 1862, until he was mustered out on July 15, 1865, at Baton Rouge, Louisiana. They are here in 1900 and in Union County in 1910 and back here by 1920.

He is 32 IA born right here. He is listed as Edward, but is Edgar Hiram Putnam. He is a son of Naham Dan Putnam and Mary Spake from here. His wife Rosa Shank is 30 IL and they have Mary E. 5 IA and Russell D. 1 IA. They are in Timber Creek in 1900 and 1910 and Marshalltown by 1920.

He is 35 IA. His wife Emma Lukehart is 29 IA and they have Ben 9 IA, Inez 7 IA and Estella 5 IA, all born here in Marshall County. George is a son of Naham Daniel Putnam and Mary Spake from here and in Timber Creek now. He will be here till he dies in 1917. Emma is widowed here in 1920.

He is 26 IA born in Franklin County, his wife Nettie L. Desch is 24 IA born in Poweshiek County. He is a son of Charles Putman and Anna Briggs from New York and was in Franklin County, Iowa in 1880. They are here in 1900

He is 63 OH and his wife Mary Spake is 62 OH. Grace 24 IA is still at home. He's been here a while, a son of Daniel Baldwin Putnam. He was born in Sandusky, Huron County OH, moved to Cass County MI where his dad used to live, and then the family came here in 1854. They will go up into Logan County, Colorado and be there in 1900. They will then return here to Marshalltown, and both will die here in 1902.

He is 36 MI, his wife Nancy Margaret Ballantyne is 30 IA and they have Ethel G. 14 IA, Elsie 12 IA, Kate E. 8 IA, Charles F. 5 IA and Carrie 3 IA. He is a son of Eri Carlton Putnam and Eliza Goodrich who are also here in town.

 

E. C. (ERI CARLTON) PUTNAM  Soldier, Monona County

He is 83 NY, his wife Eliza Goodrich is 56 NY and their son Eugene is 21 NE. James Eugene was born while the family was in Madison County Nebraska in the mid 1870s for a couple of years. Eri was born in Watertown, Jefferson County New York January 12, 1812 and will die here next year on August 26, 1896. He is a son of John Putnam (1741) and Elizabeth Carlton of Fitchburg, Massachusetts. His folks moved to New York in the early 1800s, and were in Washington County, and in Oneida County shortly afterwards. He was in Ottawa County Michigan in 1850 with his second wife Martha Close. She died and he married Eliza Goodrich in Grand Rapids, Kent County on December 3, 1857. They were there in 1860. They headed off to Iowa in about 1866, bopped up to Nebraska about 1871 and returned to Soldier, Monona County, Iowa in the 1870s. In 1880 he was back in Nebraska, but Eliza was right here with the kids.

He is 46 NY, his wife Josephine Boyles is 48 PA and they have Louis 23 IA, Mattie 20 IA, Addie 17 IA, Eddie 17 IA (twins), Frank 13 IA. They had a son Thomas who would be 11 now but must have died young. He is a son of William Rodman Putnam and his first wife Mary, He was born in Phoenix, Oswego County New York. The family came out to Hardin County Iowa in the 1860s. His dad was a son of Jedidiah Putnam and Lois Cheeseborough from Preston Connecticut. He is here in 1900 and 1910. He will die here in 1918, Josephine in 1921.

He is Frank E. Putman 29 IL and is married to Martha Saltzkorn 22 IL. They have John W. 3 born Cherokee County and Lillie M. just born O'Brien County. They will be in Savanna, Carroll County, IL in 1900 and Brown County, SD in 1910. No clue as to his parents.

He is 35 WI, his wife Mary E. is 30 WI and they have Ropha or probably Ralph 6 WI. He looks like the son of Hiram Putman and Sarah Connant from Green County Wisconsin. This is a German Family out of Virginia and then Ohio and Wisconsin.

He was listed without a first name, but is Greene Marion Putman’s son 35 IA (MO). His wife Jessie D. McKean is 25 PA, and they have a son (no name but is Jesse Lynn) 8 IA. He is a son of Greene Marion Putman and Mary Elizabeth Kelsey from Fulton County, Illinois, Davis County Iowa, and then Mercer County, Missouri where Tilford was born February 8, 1859. He married Jessie in Columbus, Nebraska on March 25, 1886. They are in Page County, Iowa in 1900 and 1910, he in 1920. They had one son, Jesse Lynn. Both father and son were physicians. Jessie died in 1917, and Tilford died August 26, 1926 in Shenandoah, Iowa. Southern Putman Family.

 

MERTON A. (ADELBERT) PUTNAM  America, Plymouth County

He is 37 IA, his wife Alice Annette Blakely is 34 IL, and Frederick 11 IA, Ethel 9 IA and Harry 1 ½ IA. He is a son of Harvey Cornelius Putnam and Sarah Stewart. He was born in Poweshiek County and was there in 1860 to 1880 with his folks and married there in 1885. They are in Palo Alto County in 1900, and are in Mahaska County in 1910 and in Keokuk County in 1920 and 1930.

 

GEORGE PUTNAM  Portland, Plymouth County

He is 28 born in Linn County Iowa, his wife Julia is 26 born in Polk County Iowa, and they have Elmo 4 IA and Elmer 2 IA. He is a son of George and Adelia Medbury Putnam who are here in town too. George is here in 1900 and in Pennington County South Dakota by 1910 and there through 1930.

 

GEORGE C. (CORNELIUS) PUTNAM  Portland Plymouth County

He is now 65 NY, his wife Adelia Olivia Medbury is 38 PA, and they have Sylvanus (James Sylvanus) 17 IA, Niles E. 15 IA and Jay D. 22 IA and his wife Lillie Belle Baker 19 IL. In an Iowa Biographical entry, we see he was born in Livingston County, New York on August 15, 1831. He went to McLean County, Pennsylvania in 1851, where he met and married Adelia. Then they went to Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1856. They have been in Linn County up till about 1890. They will remain here in Plymouth County the rest of their lives. He will die in 1914, she in 1915. His death certificate in 1914, states his father was Barney Putnam. He is a son of Barney and Margaret Putman from Mount Morris, Livingston County. This is a Dutch Family out of Montgomery County New York. His folks moved to Michigan about the time he went to Iowa.

He is 55 GER, his wife Anna is 47 GER and they have William 23 IA, Christian 19, Frederick 16 IA, Louis 14 IA and Minnie 9 IA. They are recent and are here in 1900. There are a few that will go to Plymouth County too. William, Louis and young Christian are all married here in 1910.

He is 22 GER. His wife Mary is 19 IA and they have Edward 7 IA and Roy 1 IA. He is possibly a son of Christian and Anna here in town.

 

CHARLEY PUTNAM  Deep River, Poweshiek County

He is 26 IA born right here on August 2, 1868. His wife Abbie Elliott is 25 IL and they have Paul less than a year old. Charles is a son of Harvey Cornelius Putman and Sarah Ann Steward from here. Harvey is a son of Harvey Putnam and Rebecca Steward and was born back in Bethel, Windsor County, Vermont. They are here in 1900 and in Jackson Township in 1910 and 1920 and in Montezuma Township in 1930 and longer.

 

WILL PUTNAM  Deep River, Poweshiek County

He is another son of Harvey Putnam and Sarah Ann Stewart. He is 22 IA born here in June 1872. He is single now but will marry Myrtle Evelyn Cranston and they are here in 1900 through 1920 and he is widowed here in 1930. His then widowed mother Sarah is with them in 1910.

Mary Louise Davenport is now 62 PA born in Greencastle Pennsylvania September 23, 1832. She is the widow of Charles Edwin Putnam who died here July 18, 1887. He was a son of Benjamin Risley Putnam and Eunice Morgan from Saratoga Springs New York. He was is a lawyer, President of the Davenport Savings Bank, President of the Board of Education, President of the Academy of Sciences and lots of other nice things. Mary will carry on the Arts and Science stuff and will be here going strong in 1900 and then die herself February 20, 1903.

 

WILLIAM PUTMAN  Davenport, Scott County

He is 37 IA born here June 1857, and his wife Anna T. Gillian is 38 PA. They now have Mary 10 IA, Agness 8 IA, Anna 7 IA, and Henrietta 6 IA. The kids were all born right here. He is a son of Abraham H. Putman and Elizabeth Moran of Bloomfield, Davis County. Abe was a son of Elijah Putman and Elizabeth Duff. Southern Putman family. They were here in 1885, and are here in 1910. Anna Gillian, his wife, will die here in 1917, and he will die here October 15, 1935.

William Clement is 32 IA, born June 26, 1862, and Elizabeth Duncan 27 IA born January 9, 1868. They are two single kids of Charles and Mary Louise Putnam. They were born here and live with their widowed mother.

He is 68 GER. He was here in Blue Grass with Christine his wife in 1880. She’s not listed but they are all together in Woodbury County in 1900 and on. German Puttmann family of course.

EIZABETH D. PUTNAM Hull, Sioux County

Elizabeth Beaudettte is the widow of Henry Putnam from Canada. Henry died here May 30, 1893. She will die here September 2, 1905. She is now 46 CAN, Margaret 23 IA, Alfred A. 19 IA, Luella A. 15 IA, Charles S. 13 IA and Cecilia B. 11 IA. Henry was born April 18, 1830 in St. Johns, Quebec just across the border from Vermont. He was born with the name Patenaude, and was listed as Henry Putnode in Westford, Chittenden County, Vermont in 1850. He was first married to Rose King in Westford Vermont. Rose was living two houses away in 1850. Probably because there were several Putnams in Westford, he changed or had anglicized his name to Putnam sometime in the 1850s while in Vermont. So he isn’t really a Putnam at all. Henry married Elizabeth Beaudette back in Canada in 1865, and then came back here to Lyons County, Iowa with her by the 1880 census.

 

JAMES M. PUTMAN  Gladbrook, Spring Creek County

He is 43 IL, his wife Hattie Maude White is 36 WI and they have Mabel J. 12 IA. He is James, son of James Putman and Letha Darnell from Brown County, Illinois. He was born there March 30, 1851. He was a farmer until 1877 when he became a druggist in Holland, Grundy County, Iowa. In 1881 he married Maud White daughter of Julian and Hattie White. Maud was born March 31, 1858 and she died November 23, 1904. James died January 9, 1913 in Lakefield, Minnesota. They are in Grinell Township, Poweshiek County, Iowa in 1900. They had the one child. Mabel born in September 1882 and died in a car accident in British Columbia, Canada in 1963. She married Hugo Meilicke. Southern Putman Family.

 

LESTER R. (RICHARD) PUTMAN  Maxwell, Story County

He is 37 MI, his wife Kate Ann Pollack is 35 MI, and they have Vance W. 13 IA, Wade M. 11 IA, Vera E. 7 IA, Frank B. 5 IA, Nora or Neva 3 IA and Gertrude N. less than a year old IA. The son of William and Martha Putman he was born August 2, 1857. Lester was with his folks in 1860 in Leroy Township, Ingham County, Michigan. His grandparents were Richard Henry Putman and Nancy Schalk from Montgomery County, New York. This is the Dutch Putman line. They are here in 1900. I don’t find them in 1910 but he is widowed in Los Angeles California in 1920.

 

MICHAEL T. (THADEUS) PUTNAM  Buckingham, Tama County

He is 26 CAN (should be WI his folks were from Canada though), his wife Barbara is 21 IA and they have Miles J. less than a year IA. He is a son of James Putman from Canada and Lydia Wheeler. He was born in Brown County, Wisconsin and was home with the folks in 1880. They are in Buena Vista County in 1900 and in Black Hawk County in 1910. I don’t find them in 1920, but Barbara is widowed in Cowley County Kansas in 1930.

 

WALTER W. & CLYDE C. PUTNAM  Bedford, Taylor County

Walter is 19 IA born in Decatur County Iowa and his brother Clyde is 16 NE born when the family was in Furnas County Nebraska in he late 1870s and they were all there in 1880. They are kids of Samuel Deloss Putnam and Sarah Ockerman. Sam was a son of John Putman and Mary Meek. In 1860 the family was in Mercer County, Missouri and in 1870 were in Decatur County, Iowa, and Samuel was married in Furnas County in 1880. He returned to Decatur County, Iowa and died there August 1, 1881. Walter will be in Jasper County, Iowa in 1900 with his widowed mother. Walter will be married in Reno County Kansas in 1920. Clyde will be in Johnson County Iowa in 1900, and married there in 1920. This is a Dutch Putman family out Huron County Ohio and Jefferson County New York before that.

He is 52 VT and his wife Josephine A. Smith is 50 VT. They have Alta 22 IL, Edwin 19 IA and George 11 IA. He is a son of Prentiss B. Putnam and Jemima Chase of Whittingham, Vermont. He was born in Wardsboro, Vermont November 6, 1842. They are here in 1900 and 1910 and he is widowed here in 1920.

 

ALBERT PUTMAN  Lincoln, Warren County

He is 44 IA. At home are Jennie Laura 20 IA, James Albert 15 IA, Thomas Bethel 11 IA, Mary Catherine 7 IA, Ober Woodson 4 IA. He is married to Catherine Nancy Pyle who is 43 IN now, but missing or possibly just a clerical error. She was here in 1880, and is indeed here in 1900 and onwards. Albert is a son of James Rufus Putnam and his first wife Cynthia Ann Bradley. He was born in Dubuque March 16, 1850 and will be here till he dies April 4, 1943.

 

ASA PUTNAM  Richland, Warren County

He is 41 IA, his wife Sarah Ellen Pyle is 42 IN and they have his son Charles Ernest Putnam 21 IA with them. Asa Lloyd is a son of James Rufus Putnam and his first wife Cynthia Ann Bradley. He was born in December of 1853. They are here in 1900 and 1910, and in Hartford Township in 1920, and Richland again in 1930. The son Charles was born in February of 1877. He will soon marry Myra Belle Seevers, and they are here in 1900 and in Palmyra Township in 1910 and 1920 and back here in 1930.

 

JOHN PUTMAN  Marion Township, Washington County

He is 44 VA born April 27, 1854. His wife Mary Rosetta Whitsel is 34 IA, born in March of 1864. They have Mary 12 IA, Stacey 10 IA, John 8 IA, Clara 6 IA and Hulda/Hilda 2 IA. He is John William Putman, a son of Jacob G. Putman Junior and Ellen Edmundson from Hampshire County Virginia. Jacob just died here in July 1894. Ellen had died back in March 1883. This is a German Family, Maryland to Virginia to here in Iowa about 1854. He married Rosetta Whitsel on November 20, 1881. They are here in 1900 and 1910. Mary will die here in 1914, John in 1934.

He is 38 IA. His second wife Mina J. Bellville, is 38 IA, born in December of 1861. They have Nellie 13 IA and Oral a son 10 IA. He is a son of Jacob G. Putman Junior and Ellen Edmundson, born in March 1856. They are here in 1900 and 1910. Mina is widowed here in 1920.

He is 47 WVA born May 23, 1847. His wife Lucy Ellen Reeves is 38 IA, born in September of 1856. They have Stacy E. 20 IA and Indiana 17 IA. He is Jacob Putman III, a son of Jacob G. Putman Junior and Ellen Edmundson from Hampshire County Virginia. They are here in 1900 and in 1910. German Family

He is 41 VA. His wife Laura Essley died in 1889. At home are Rachel 18 IA, Jennie 14 IA and Cleveland B. a daughter 10 IA. He is another son of Jacob G. Putman Junior and Ellen Edmundson from Hampshire County Virginia. He was born March 28, 1849. He married Laura Essley here in 1876. He is here in 1900, but I don’t find him later. German family.

He is 28 IA, born here September 18, 1866. His wife Ivy A. Gordon is 24 MO, and they have Georgia E. 5 IA. He was born here, a son of William Marion Putman and Mary Jane Hayes Putman. He is a grandson of Joseph Putman and Polly Hackleman from Rush County, Indiana and Pendleton County Kentucky before that. Southern Putman family. They are here through the 1930.

He is a carpenter 50 NY. He is a son of John and Hannah Putnam from Lewis County New York, He is also listed with his brother Surenno Putnam.

He is 53 NY, his wife Emma Dean 41 NY. They have Bertha 22 IA, Ray (Leonard Ray) 16 IA, Floyd 4 IA and his twin Lloyd 4 IA. Also here is his widowed mother Hannah Putnam 76 NY and his brother Charles L. Putnam 50 NY who never married. Hannah was the wife of John Putnam (2853) from Lewis County, New York, and has been here since the 1870 census. John was a son of Malachi Putnam and Sarah Blount from Massachusetts. Surreno will die soon and Emma is widowed here in 1900 through 1930 when she is 77 years old.

He is 38 NY, his wife Prudence is 36 IA. They have Gertie M. 16 IA, Grace M. 13 IA, Orra K. 5 IA and Charles A. 1 IA. He was here in 1880, and is a son of John Southwick Putnam and Julia Almira Cooley from Crown Point, Essex County, New York. They are here in 1900 and his widowed mom is with them.

He is 53 GER, his wife Christina Florkie is 51 GER. They have Charley 22 IA, Louis 20 IA, Rudolph 16 IA, Fred H. 12 IA and Amanda 9 IA. They have been married 25 years, and were in Blue Grass, Scott County Iowa in 1880 and here in 185. They are indexed as Pittmann now and in 1900. In 1880 the spelling was Puettmann. It is Puttmann from 1910 on though. He is a son of Barnard and Gertrude Puttmann from Germany. Part of the German Puettman family.

He is 28 GER, Christina Florkie his wife 26 GER and they have Henry 4 IA and Adolph just born. He is a son of Frederick Puttmann and they are all here in 1900. Christina’s widowed mother Mary Florke 55 GER and a bunch of her kids live with them.

Adney is listed as 56 VT, born in May of 1844.  His wife Emma Robinson is 53 VT, born in May of 1847.  The children are: Walter A. 27 IA, born in March of 1873, Ina M. 22 IA, born in October of 1877, Harry I. 19 IA, born in December of 1880, Jessie I. 13 IA, born in February of 1887, and Flossie I. 11 IA, born in October of 1888. He is Prentiss and Jemima's son from Whittington, Vermont. I gave his lineage back in 1880. Adney will die here December 20, 1904. Emma is widowed here in 1910 with only Flossie still at home.

 

SARAH E. PUTNAM  Quincy Township, Adams County

Sarah E. is listed as 28 MI, born in April of 1872, a boarder of Milton Butts. Her children Flossie 5 NE born March 1895, John 7 NE born in March 1893, Minnie 10 NE born in December 1889 and Ora Belle 3 IA born in May 1897, are there as well. Sarah was/is married to John Harrison Putnam who won’t die till 1907. Between now and then, John will marry Mary Josephine Waterbury. Sarah, Flossie and Ora are in Dawson County Nebraska in 1910. She will be married to George Huntley by then. John Harrison Putnam, by the way, is a son of Benjamin Putnam and Ellen Angeline Moore, and was born in Lyndeborough, New Hampshire.

 

EDWIN H. (HARVEY) PUTMAN  Post Township, Allamakee County

Edwin H. is listed as 52 NY, born in November of 1847.  His wife Martha E. Windell is 41 IA, born in October of 1859.  The children at home are: Eunice M. 19 IA, born in April of 1881, Gertie 13 IA, born in March of 1887, William A. 8 IA, born in December of 1891, and Lois 5 IA, born in December of 1894. He is a son of John and Hannah Putnam from Lewis County New York. In 1870, he was at home with his parents in Winneshiek County Iowa. They were here in 1880. For this lineage, see John's listing back in 1870. The line goes back into Massachusetts. There will be a divorce and Martha and the kids will be in Winneshiek County in 1910. Edwin will be in an Old Soldiers Home in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1910.

The son of William A. Putman and Mary Elizabeth Nelson of Adams County in 1880. William is a son of Benjamin Putman and Melvina Baker from Indiana and then Linn County Missouri. James C. is listed as 29 IA, born in January of 1871.  His wife Minnie B. Wilson is 28 IA, born in February of 1872.  Their son, Byron E., is 2 IA, born in July of 1897. He married Minnie B. Wilson on May 5, 1892. They will be in Texas County Oklahoma in 1910, and back here in Wayne County Iowa in 1920 and 1930, Southern Putman family.

The son of William A. Putman and Mary Nelson from Adams County. Jesse H. is listed as 22 IA, born in March of 1878, a laborer for Harlan Marsli. He was at home in Adams County in 1880 at age 2. Southern Putman Family.

 

JAMES R. PUTMAN  Pleasant Township, Appanoose County

The son of Benjamin and Melvina Putman, and he moved here from Linn County Missouri in the 1872-74 time period. He is listed as 51 IN, born in April of 1849.  His wife, Margaret R. Bell, is 49 PA, born in December of 1850. They were married here December 3, 1871. Their son, Francis M., is 18 IA, born in April of 1882, and their daughter, Meryl (Murial), is 7 IA, born in September of 1892. They will be in Woods County Oklahoma in the 1910 census. The son of John Glidden Putman and Thankful B. Putnam from Montpelier, Vermont. He has been here since 1869. He is 66 VT, born in October of 1833. His wife Anna Briggs is 60 NY, born in May of 1840.  Also in the household is a boarder, Clarence Crawford, 16 PA.

The son of John A. Putnam, and was at home here in 1880. John J. is listed as 27 IA, born in February of 1873.  His wife, Mary Miller, is 25 IA, born in September of 1875. They were married here April 30, 1893. Their daughter Frances B. is 6 IA, born in January of 1894. They are divorced by 1910. He will be in Converse County Wyoming in 1920 with a second wife. Mary and a daughter Gladys will still be here in 1910 and in 1920. In 1925 she is alone in Mahaska County and then back here by 1930.

George Jacob Putman is listed as 47 WI, born in February of 1853.  His wife, Ida M. Huyek, is 49 IL, born in August of 1850.  Their daughter, Ethel M., is 19 IA, born in July of 1881.  Also in the household are: His father-in-law, John Huyek, Sr., 76 PA, born in September of 1823, and his Stepson, Fred D. Hewett, 30 IL, born in June of 1869. He is a son of Jacob Putman and Mary Jane Marr from Waushara County Wisconsin. He was home there in 1860 and 1870. He was married in Grundy County Iowa in 1880. He and Ida are here in 1910 and 1920. Dutch folks.

 

JOHN PUTNAM  East Waterloo Township, Black Hawk County

John is listed as 33 OH, born in September of 1866, and is listed as the son-in-law of J. H. Hubbard, with whom he was listed. His wife Nellie Hubbard is 34 IA born in April 1866, and son Earl H. 11 IA born in June of 1888, are here as well. He popped up here at age 3 in 1870 with his mother Cassie McIlroy and her new second husband Andrew Cushman. Oscar Putnam was her husband back in Ohio. They were married in 1865 and then split or he died. Cassandra McIlroy Cushman was married to Oscar Allan Putnam who died. Oscar was a son of Edwin C. Putnam and was at home in Allegheny City Pennsylvania in 1850 at age 15 PA. He married Cassie in Ohio. They came out here and she then married Andrew Cushman here. They were here since 1870.

Sarah J. is listed as 64 IL, born in June of 1835.  She is enumerated with her daughter, Laura P. (Putman) Couch.

He is listed as 41 IA, born September 24, 1859.  His wife, Rosella Dugan, is 27 IA, born September 5, 1871.  The children are: Mabel E. 6 IA, born in July of 1893, Clement E. 4 IA, he was born in January of 1896, Clarice Pearl, 2 IA, born in August of 1897, and Hannah E. 1 IA, born in May of 1899. He is a son of Benjamin Augustus and has been here in Boone County since the day he was born. Ernest and Rosella were married in Poweshiek County September 5, 1892.

 

FRANK PUTMAN  Peoples Township, Boone County

The son of Benjamin Augustus Putnam. Frances Ashbury is listed as 28 IA, born January 21, 1872.  His wife Clara Ellen Harrington is 22 MO, born in May of 1878. They were just married here March 21, 1900. There are no children listed.  Also in the household is Frank's mother, Samantha (Samantha Ellis Purinton) 63 NY, born in May of 1837, and a boarder, Edith Sommers, 19 IA, born in March of 1881. Samantha will be here in 1910 too, but living by herself with a couple of grandkids.

 

LUCIEN PUTNAM  Hazelton Township, Buchanan County

He's been here since the 1860s. He is a son of Edward and Hulda Putnam from Vermont, and is listed as 76 NY, born in February of 1824, the father-in-law of George E. Thomas. Lucien’s second wife, Cynthia Crosby died in 1889, and he then married a widow, Mrs. Phoebe Thomas who then died in 1896. He is living with her son, and is also listed later with one of his own daughters in Chickasaw County. He was born February 14, 1824 in Warsaw, Wyoming County New York and will die here in Hazelton, Buchanan County Iowa on March 29, 1908. He and Cynthia were in Winnebago County, Illinois in 1860 and Fayette County Iowa in 1870.

Lewis is listed as 34 IA, born December 12, 1865.  His wife, Martha Pray, is 32 IA, born in July of 1867. The children are: Demia M. 11 IA, she was born in May of 1889, Earl F. 8 IA, born in July of 1891, Cora M. 6 IA, born in October of 1893, Myrtle E. 5 IA, born in July of 1894, Florence H. 4 IA, born in September of 1895, and Homer O. 2 IA, born in May of 1898. He is a son of Benjamin Augustus and Samantha Putnam and was with them in Boone County in 1870 and 1880. He married Martha E. Pray in Boone County on June 12, 1888. They are here in 1910.

 

MICHAEL T. (THADDEUS) PUTNAM  Sioux Rapids, Buena Vista County

He is listed as 30 IL, born in March of 1870. His wife, Barbara Cummings, is 26 IA, born in February of 1874.  The children are: J. Miles 5 IA, born in August of 1894, and Barbara Catherine 4 IA, born in March of 1896. He is a son of James Putman from Canada and Lydia Wheeler. He was born in Brown County Wisconsin and was home with the folks in 1880. They are in Black Hawk County in 1910.

 

BARNEY PUTTMANN (PUETTMANN)  Roselle Township, Carroll County

Barnard is listed as 72 GER, born January 9, 1828.  His wife Sybilla Timp is 66 GER, born in November of 1833. Also in the household are: their daughter, Johanna (Puttman) Comes, 23 IA, born in May of 1877, their son-in-law, Peter Comes, 35 GER, born in April of 1865, and their grandson, John B. Comes, 5 IA, born in April of 1895. In 1850, Barnard was in Burlington, Racine County Wisconsin with his father John who was 64 at that time. He was here in Winneshiek County Iowa in 1860, listed as Bernard Puttmann born in Prussia. Barney has been here since the mid 1870s, but they haven’t appeared in any census since 1860 till now. Barney was born in Dorsten Westphalia on January 9, 1828. He came with his parents to Wisconsin in April 1845. He married Sybilla Timp there on April 27, 1852. They then came here in mid May 1856 and will be here in Iowa all their lives. Sybilla was born November 28, 1833 and will die January 9, 1911. Barney was born January 9, 1828. He will be here in 1920 at age 93! He will die later that year on May 14, 1920.

 

HENRY H. (HERMAN) PUTTMANN Roselle Township, Carroll County

He is listed as 26 IA, born in March of 1874.  His wife Anna Kleine is 25 IA, born in April of 1875.  Their daughter, Mary C., is 1 IA, born in November of 1898.  Also in the household is John K. Knoble 9 IA, born in June of 1890, but his relationship is not recorded. He is a son of the above Barnard Puttmann. He married Anna October 5, 1897. She will die here January 18, 1901. He will then marry Mary Angeline Ocken January 27, 1903

 

JOHN M. PUTTMANN  Roselle Township, Carroll County

He is 18 IA, born in March of 1882, a servant for Henry Bengfort, with whom he was enumerated. I would guess he is a younger brother of the upcoming Joseph Putman, and a son of Barnard and Sybella Puttman from here.

 

JOSEPH PUTTMANN  Roselle Township, Carroll County

He is 34 IA, born in August of 1865. His wife Agnes Ostendorf is 28 GER, born in March of 1872.  The children are: Katy 7 IA, born in April of 1893, Mary 4 IA, born in May of 1896, and Veronica 1 IA, born in February of 1899. He is a son of Barnard Puttman. He was mentioned in an article about his folks. The family has been here since the mid 1870s, but hasn’t ‘appeared in print.’ He, Agnes and Katy were in Nobles County Minnesota in 1895. They are here in 1910 with more kids

 

JAMES R. (RUFUS) PUTNAM  Cass Township, Cass County

James is listed as 41 IA, born in March of 1859.  His wife, Eliza Jane Sexton, is 42 IA, born in April of 1858.  The children are: Marion H. 19 IA, born in December of 1880, Jessie G. 16 IA, born in March of 1884, and Claude 13 IA, born in August of 1886. He is James Rufus Putnam Junior, a son of James Rufus Putnam and his first wife Cynthia Ann Bradley. He was born in Dubuque County March 10, 1859 and was with the folks there in 1860 and in Warren County in 1870 and 1880. Eliza will die September 15, 1904. He will marry Ulrica Thulin from Sweden here in 1905. They are here in 1910 and on. He will die in Griswold Cass County December 27, 1942 at age 83. Christmas was just too much that year. Ulrica will die here December 30, 1935.

 

F. R. (FRED REYNOLDS) PUTNAM  Genesee Township, Cerro Gordo County

Fred is listed as 33 IA, born in September of 1867. His wife Eva Watkins is 31 IA, born in May of 1869.  Their son, Paul, is 1 IA, born in March of 1897. He is a son of William Rodman Putnam of Hardin County Iowa (See family in 1870). They are in Stevens County Minnesota in 1905 and 1910.

 

FRED PUTNAM  Dresden Township, Chickasaw County

Fred is listed as 35 IL, born in February of 1865.  His wife Della Putman is 36 NY (Think it should be WI), born in July of 1863.  The children are: Nellie 10 IL, born in February of 1890, Steven 8 WI, born in October of 1891, Elard 6 WI, born in September of 1893, Lee 4 IA, born in November of 1895, and Kitty 1 IA, born in April of 1899. Fred is a son of Stephen Putnam and his first wife Caroline Wheeler from Winnebago County Illinois. New England line. He was there in 1870. Then Della. She is a daughter of John Hamilton and Basheba Putman from Montgomery County New York. Basheba was a Stockbridge Mohegan Indian and so Della is Indian as well. John Hamilton is on the Dutch line and is here in the County now. Fred and the family were in Butler County in the 1895 State Census. They are in Shawano County Wisconsin in 1905, 1910, 1920 and 1930. This is a blend of New England Putnams and Dutch/Indian Putmans.

 

LUCIEN B. PUTNAM  Fredericksburg Township, Chickasaw County

He is listed as 76 NY, born in February of 1824, the father-in-law of James W. Potter. This is a duplicate of the above Lucien in Buchanan County. Maybe he was moving around that year. He had two daughters, Cynthia and Helen. Helen married James Potter. Lucien’s second wife, Cynthia Crosby died in 1889 and he then married a widow, Mrs. Phoebe Thomas who then died in 1896. The earlier listing is with her son. He was born February 14, 1824 in Warsaw, Wyoming County New York and will die here in Hazelton, Buchanan County Iowa on March 29, 1908.

 

J. H. (JOHN HAMILTON) PUTMAN  New Hampton, Chickasaw County

John is listed as 73 NY, born in November of 1826.  His wife Basheba Brown is 68 NY, born in May of 1832.  Their son, Joseph A. (Albert), is 32 WI, born in December of 1867. They were in Lamartine, Fond du Lac County Wisconsin from the 1850s through the 1880 census. He is a son of John and Eve Putnam from New York (Dutch folks). Basheba is an Indian and member of the Stockbridge Mohegan tribe. The tribe has moved from New York to Shawano County Wisconsin. Their son Bert will move to Shawano County soon and is joined with the above Fred Putnam who has married his sister Della.

 

STACY N. PUTMAN  Freeman Township, Clay County

Stacy is listed as 26 WI, born in April of 1874.  His wife Florence Davis is 23 IA, born in October of 1876.  Their daughter, Lena M., is 2 IA, born in March of 1898.  Also in the household is Stacy's brother, Guy, 23 WI, born in January of 1877. They are sons of Jacob and Mary Putman and were in Waushara County Wisconsin with their folks in 1880. Guy, the brother, will be in North Dakota in 1910, and in Idaho in 1920 with a family and in Oklahoma in 1940 with their son Darrell. Stacy and Florence are here in 1910 and 1920.

He is listed as 45 MA, born in June of 1854.  His wife Anna V. Powers is 34 MI, born in June of 1865.  Their daughter, Gertrude E., is 3 MN, born in September of 1896. He is George Frederick Rice Putnam. He is a son of Franklin Putnam (1810) and Mary Ann Rice from Houlton, Maine. George was born in Reading, Mass. June 24, 1854. He was with the family in Reading in 1860, and in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1870. He married Anna in Cook County Illinois March 9, 1887. He was single in Hancock County Iowa in 1885. They are in Bottineau County North Dakota in 1910 and 1920.

He is listed as 47 NY, born in December of 1852.  His wife, Caroline Nus, is 38 IA, born in April of 1862.  The children at home are: Ernest 11 IA, born in August of 1888, Arthur 10 IA, born in December of 1889, and Bertha 6 IA, born in September of 1893. There are two boarders in the household also. He is Alfred Elliot born in Warsaw, NY December 9, 1851. He is a son of Lucien B. Putnam and his first wife Esther Foster. He is shown there in Fairfield, Fayette County Iowa in 1870. He married Caroline April 27, 1887, and they will be back in Fayette County in 1920.

 

LEVI S. PUTMAN  Clinton Township, Clinton County

Levi S. is listed as 62 NY, born in April of 1838.  His wife, Julia A., is 73 PA, born in February of 1827.  There are no children listed. He is a son of Victor G. and Sarah Ann Putman from Johnstown, Fulton County New York. He was born in Oneida County, New York April 12, 1839 and will die here in Clinton September 16, 1911. He was at home there in the 1850 Census. He is part of the New York Dutch Putmans.

 

U. G. (ULYSSES GRANT) PUTNAM  Spring Valley Township, Dallas County

Ulysses Grant Putnam is listed as 36 IA, born in April of 1864.  His wife, Nackey Earley, is 29 OH, born in July of 1871.  The children are: Lloyd A. 13 IA, born in May of 1887, Ruth E. 8 months IA, born in September of 1899.  Also in the household are his mother-in-law, Ruth Earley, 66 IA (probably OH), born in November of 1833, and his brother-in-law, James W. Earley, 18 WV, born in October of 1881. He is a son of Benjamin Putnam and Samantha Purinton, and was with his folks in 1870 and 1880 in Boone County Iowa. Nackey Earley is his second wife. He married Clara Wells in Polk County on November 19, 1884. She died November 27, 1897, and he married Nackey November 16, 1898. He and Clara were in Calhoun County in 1895.

 

FULTON E. (ELIJAH) PUTMAN  Bloomfield Township, Davis County

Elijah Fulton Putman is listed as 67 IL, born in June of 1833.  His wife, Nancy Ellis Brennan, is 64 KY, born in February of 1836.  The children at home are: Eva 41 IA, born in January of 1859, and Henrietta 34 IA, born in August of 1867. They are here in 1910. He is a son of Elijah Putman and Elizabeth Duff from Fulton County Illinois and then here. He was born here June 17, 1833 and will die in Bloomfield on February 27, 1914. The son of Elijah Putman from Fulton County IL and then here in Davis County. Jasper Newton is listed as 56 IA, born in June of 1843.  His wife Elizabeth ‘Eliza’ Jane Grant is 52 OH, born in August of 1847.  The children at home are: Willard 29 IA, born in February of 1871, a daughter Ollie 28 IA, born in March of 1872, Anna B. 21 IA, born in November of 1878, Daisy 20 IA, born in January of 1880, and Clyde 17 IA, born in March of 1883. He is 50 IA born October 1849. He is living with his father Daniel Thomas Putman and is listed below. He was married to Susan Frances Wisehard in 1870. She died here February 24, 1873. He then married Sarah Kerkey August 14, 1890 and they were divorced recently. He will be here until he dies June 27, 1913. Southern Putman Family.

Another son of Elijah. Daniel Thomas is listed as 78 IL, born in January of 1822.  His wife, Jennett Roundey, is 73 NY, born in August of 1826.  The children at home are: Stiles H. 50 IA, born in October of 1849, and May 34 IA, born in May of 1866.  Also in the household is a male servant, Ellsworth DeVault, 33 MO.  He was born in July of 1866. THOMAS E. (ELIJAH) PUTMAN  Soap Creek Township, Davis County

He is the son of Stiles Putman (above). In 1880 he was listed with Daniel Thomas as a grandson. He is married to Stella Combs, but she is off someplace now. They will be here in 1910, and his dad will be with him.

 

HENRY H. (HAROLD) PUTNAM  Delaware Township, Delaware County

He's been here since the 1860s. He is listed as 67 NY CT CT, born January 6, 1832.  His wife, Elvira Ann Stanclift, is 62 NY, born September 12, 1837. They were married here September 3, 1865. The children at home are: Edward A. 25 IA, born in October of 1874, Edith E. 19 IA, born in September of 1880, and their granddaughter, Faith G. Putnam 3 IA, born in June of 1896. Faith is a daughter of Henry H. junior. Don’t know what happened to young Henry, but his wife Amy B. Connell died here April 30, 1897. Elvira will die here July 2, 1909. Henry Senior was born January 6, 1833 and will be here until he dies May 31, 1910. He is a son of David Pease Putnam and Nancy Alcott and was born in Lee, Oneida County New York. His dad was from Hartford, Connecticut.

 

COLEMAN PUTNAM  Richland Township, Delaware County

Coleman is listed as 34 MI, born in March of 1866.  His wife Sarah Cordelia ‘Delia’ Probst is 31 IA, born in October of 1868.  The children are: Maude 11 IA, born in May of 1889, Mabel 9 IA, born in October of 1891, and Esther 6 IA, born in January of 1894.  There are two servants in the household also. He is a son of Charles and Esther Putnam and was shown in that family in 1870 in Sunfield Township of Eaton County Michigan. In 1880, the family was in Linn County Iowa, but Coleman and his brother Ernest were not listed in that report for some reason as everyone else was. His brothers, Clarence and Ernest, are listed separately elsewhere here in 1900. Coleman will be in Clayton County in 1910, 1920 and 1930, and die there in 1936.

 

DAVID A. (ARCHIBALD) PUTNAM  Julian Township, Dubuque County

They were here in 1880. He is listed as 41 WI (should be 51), born in January of 1859.  His wife, Mary, is 41 SCT, born in April of 1859.  The children are: Archie 21 IA, born in February of 1879, and Florence 15 IA, born in November of 1884. He will be here in 1910 and 1920 with a new wife Ellen or Nellie White. They were married here in 1908. He is a son of George Putnam and Catherine Scleithe from Ohio, and was born in Tazewell County Illinois and then was with his folks in Grant County Wisconsin in 1860, whole family missing in 1870 and then he was here just married in 1880.

 

MART A. PUTNAM  Julian Township, Dubuque County

Martin is listed as 38 WI, born in December of 1860, a brother-in-law of Edward Reynolds. He is here along with folks who may be his brother William, and possibly his brother David who was here in 1880 also. Martin was in Linn County Iowa in 1870 with his mother Sarah. There was an older child listed as Lillie, but it might be Willie. The ages are the same. After all that, I have no clues as to his daddy.

 

WILLIAM PUTMAN  Julian Township, Dubuque County

He is 44 WI, born in October of 1855.  His wife Harriet is 39 MO, born in October of 1860.  Their daughter Leone (Lena in 1910) is 16 IA, born in July of 1883. He is William Marion Putnam, a son of George Putnam and Catherine Scleithe, and was born about the time his folks moved from Tazewell County Illinois to Grant County Wisconsin. He was there in 1860 and I don’t know where since then. He will be here with Harriet in 1910 and then by himself here in 1920.

 

CHARLES PUTMAN  Jefferson Township, Fayette County

A son of Peter and Alice. He was at home with them in Buchanan County Iowa in 1880. He is 33 IA NY ENG, born in January of 1867.  His wife, Elsie Wells, is 29 WI, born in October of 1870.  The children are: Everett 8 IA, born in July of 1891, and Irma 1 IA, born in March of 1899. He is a member of the New York Dutch family. They are here in 1910.

 

PETER PUTMAN  Jefferson Township, Fayette County

The son of Jacob D. Putman and Hannah Lewis from New York. Peter is listed as 62 NY, born in September of 1837. He and his wife Alice Teague 49 ENG are enumerated with their daughter, Cora (Putman) Brown 30 IA. They are here in 1910 and Alice is widowed in Linn County by 1920. New York Dutch family here.

 

MARY J. PUTNAM  Rockford Township, Floyd County

Mary Jane Wilkins is listed as 66 NJ, born in September of 1833.  Her son-in-law, Hubert Mosher, is 39 IL, born in April of 1861.  Her daughter, Eleanor L. (Putnam) Mosher, is 27 IA, born in July of 1872.  Her grandson, Glenn E. Mosher, is 4 IA, born in July of 1895. She is the widow of Daniel Putnam. They were here in 1870 and 1880. Daniel was a son of Daniel Putnam (1834) and Rebecca Jane Carleton from Massachusetts and was with them in Rock County WI in 1850.

 

CHARLES B. PUTMAN  Geneva Township, Franklin County

This family was here in 1880. Charles B. is listed as 53 NY, born in March of 1847.  His wife Anna Briggs is 52 ENG, born in December of 1847.  There are no children listed.  Also in the household is a boarder, George Whaley 23 IA, born in December of 1876.

 

CHARLES E. (ERVIN) PUTMAN  Geneva Township, Franklin County

A son of the above Charles. He was listed as Ervy in 1880, so I assume his full name is Charles Ervin Putman. He is listed as 26 IA, born in December of 1873.  His wife Zelle M. Silence is 25 IA, born in September of 1874.  Their daughter Dema, is 5 months IA born in January of 1900. They are here in 1905 with 2 more daughters.

 

ABRAHAM H. (HOWARD) PUTMAN  Franklin Township, Fremont County

Elijah's son is still hanging in there at age 82 IN (Gibson County), born in March 1818. His wife Elizabeth R. Moran has died here August 31, 1896. He is widowed and living with his son Howard. Southern Putman Family.

The son of Abraham H. Putman and Elizabeth Moran from Davis County. Howard is listed as 50 IA IN MD, born in January of 1850.  His wife Emily Jane Headley is 44 IA OH IA, born in September of 1855.  The children at home are: Myrta 24 IA, born in August of 1875, Minnie 22 IA, born in August of 1877, Ottie 20 IA, he was born in March of 1880, Walter 18 IA, born in April of 1882, Leta 16 IA, born in May of 1884, Howard 13 IA, born in December of 1886, Essie 11 IA, born in April of 1889, Edda 8 IA, born in September of 1891, and Zelma 4 IA, born in August of 1895.  Also in the household is Howard's father, Abraham H. MAUDE P. PUTNAM  Grant Township, Grundy County

Maude P. is listed as 10 IA, born in April of 1890, the niece of Charles D. Vought, with whom she was enumerated. Her birth record has folks as Frank Harrison Putnam and Isa Jane Langdon. The folks divorced and Frank is out in Lassen County California now in 1900 with a new wife Hattie Brown. New England family from Vermont. Frank seems to want to get as far West as he can.

 

WARREN PUTNAM  Melrose Township, Grundy County

He was in Benton County Iowa in 1880. Warren Ami is a son of George Gideon Putnam, he is listed as 27 IA, born in September of 1872.  His wife Hattie, Harriet Hortense Beary, is 32 IL, born in May of 1868.  They were married December 24, 1897. The children are: Ethel 1 IA, born in November of 1898, and Ernest (Laurence Ernest), a newborn son IA, born in May of 1900.  Also in the household is a boarder, Walter B. Boyle, 24 WI, born in August of 1874. They will be moving to Anne Arundel County Maryland in 1909. He will die there in 1940, she in 1941.

 

VANCE PUTNAM  Richland Township, Guthrie County

The son of Lester Richard Putnam, Vance is listed 17 IA, born in July of 1882, a boarder with Inga Holmes. He is also listed at home with his folks in Story County.

 

WILLARD PUTNAM  Lyon Township, Hamilton County

Willard is listed as 88 NJ, born November 7, 1812, the father in law of Herbert Lester. William Willard Putnam is a son of David and Mary Putnam and was born in Cazenovia, Madison County New York. New York Dutch family. He married Frances Marie Fairchild. They have bounced between Huron County Ohio and Madison County Missouri. Frances died in 1895 in Mercer County and Walter will die there January 3, 1908.

Jennie C. is listed as 61 NY, born in June of 1838, the aunt of David L. Tuets (sic).

 

ALLEN PUTNAM  Eldora Township, Hardin County

Allen Wilson Putnam is listed as 60 NY, born in March of 1840.  His wife, Phoebe Southard, is 44 IA, born in September of 1855.  The children at home are: Howard 20 IA, born in August of 1879, Earl 19 IA, born in January of 1881, Helen 17 IA, born in October of 1882, Clara 15 IA, born in September of 1884, and Bennett 12 IA, born in June of 1887. He is a son of Josiah and Lydia Shaw Putnam and was born in Bethany, Genesee County New York. He was with a bunch of his brothers back in 1870 in Grundy County Iowa, and just married to Phoebe in 1880 here in Hardin County. They are here in 1885 through 1910 and Phoebe is widowed here by 1920. New England family.

 

FRED W. PUTMAN  Cass Township, Harrison County

He is listed as Fred W. Puttmann, 29 GER, born in January of 1871.  His wife, Mary A., is 24 IA, born in August of 1875.  The children are: Eddie C. 7 IA, born in April of 1893, and Lulu M. 3 IA, born in September of 1896.

 

CHARLES A. PUTNAM  La Grange Township, Harrison County

Charles A. is listed as 54 MI, born in February of 1846.  His wife, Julia S. Gordon, is 52 WI, born in October of 1847.  Their son, William N. (Nelson), is 21 MI, born in December of 1879. He is a son of Orlean Putnam and Amelia Vanderhoof from Cass County Michigan. He was at home there in 1850. They were all there in Cass County in the 1880. Their daughter Fauchon is an inmate in the Institution for Feeble Minded Children in Glenwood, Mills County Iowa Julia will be widowed by 1910 and will be with her sons Frank and William in Little Rock, Arkansas. EMMA PUTNAM  St. John Township, Harrison County

Emma is listed as 53 VT, born in May of 1846, the Sister-in-law of Chester J. Briggs, with whom she was enumerated. Emma Robinson is the wife of Adney Putnam and is also shown now at home with Adney and the family in Cart, Adams County Iowa.

 

HORACE C. (CROTHERS) PUTNAM  Center Township, Henry County

Horace is listed as 47 OH, born in April of 1853.  His wife, Louise Magdfrau, is 29 IA, born in January of 1871.  The children at home are: Phil C. 19 IA, born in December of 1880, Isabelle 6 IA, born in October of 1893, and Helen 5 IA, born in December of 1894.  Also in the household is his sister, Emily 42 OH, born in May of 1858. There is one servant living here. He is a son of Philip Dodderage Putnam and Isabel Crothers from Fayette County Ohio. He was here with his folks in 1870, so look back to that report for this line, they are from Connecticut. Horace will be here the rest of his life. He is the County Sheriff.

Martha is listed as 71 NORWAY, born in August of 1829, and is living by herself. Martha Jones was married to Hiram F. Putnam. I have no idea as to his folks. Martha has been here since the 1860. She will be living with her son Charles here in 1910.

 

CHARLES PUTNAM  Vernon Springs Township, Howard County

Charles is listed as 42 IA, born in October of 1857.  His wife, Clarinda, is 34 WI, born in July of 1865.  Their daughter, Genevieve, is 8 IA, born in October of 1891. In 1860, he was here with his widowed mother Martha from Norway. Martha Jones was married to Hiram F. Putnam from New York or possibly Canada.

 

ELIZA PUTMAN  Bellevue Township, Jackson County

The widow of Jacob Putman. Eliza Wicks is listed as 70 NY, born in January of 1830, and is living by herself. She's been here since the 1860s. She and Jake returned to Carroll County Illinois in the 1880s, but the son Jacob remained on the old farm here in Bellevue. His dad died back there in the late 1880s and his mom came back here around 1890 and was here in 1895. Jacob was a son of Philip Putman and Christina Lucretia Nobles from St. Johnsville, Montgomery County New York. This is the New York Dutch Putman family.

 

HATTIE PUTMAN  Bellevue Township, Jackson County

The daughter of Oscar Putman. She is listed as 22 IA, born in January of 1878, a servant for Charles Conkling.

 

JAKE PUTMAN  Bellevue Township, Jackson County

Been here since 1870. The son of Jacob Putman, Sr., Jacob, Jr. is listed as 37 IL NY NY, born in September of 1862. His wife, Lizzie, (Elizabeth Vandanacker) is 37 IA Holland Holland, born in April of 1863.  The children are: George 14 IA, born in May of 1886, John 13 IA, born in September of 1887, Grace 10 IA, born in December of 1889, Ralph 6 IA, born in December of 1893, and Clarence 3 IA, born in September of 1896.

 

OSCAR PUTMAN  Bellevue Township, Jackson County

The son of Jacob Putman, and here in 1870. Oscar is listed as 44 IL, born in October of 1855.  His wife, Arminda Jane Savage, is 39 IL, born in January of 1861. The children at home are: Maranda 17 IA, born in December of 1882, and Mary 15 IA, born in August of 1884. He will die here December 25, 1907. In an Obituary from the Bellevue Leader, “Oscar Putman, died after being put off the train, as he had no ticket.  He was returning to Bellevue, Iowa, from Green Island, Iowa.  He had slept through the Bellevue stop earlier, and was trying to return there.  The conductor is said to have put Oscar off the train, before he was given a chance to explain what had transpired.  Oscar was put off around 10:30 P.M., and was found about 6:30 A.M the next day.  He was found about three miles down the track, badly bruised and severely injured.  It would seem that Oscar had either been beaten by someone, or possibly he had been hit by another train.” I don’t find Arminda in 1910. In 1925 she is in Clinton County living with her married sister Bertha Savage Bentlet.

The son of Oscar as shown in Jackson County in 1880. Jacob is listed as 22 IA, born in February of 1878.  Jacob was enumerated in the Jackson County Jail.

 

ELIZABETH A. PUTNAM  Des Moines Township, Jasper County

She is Elizabeth Drutz, the widow of Doctor Robert Putman, Reding Putman's son. She is listed as 63 IL, born in September of 1836.  The children at home are: Josephine P. 23 IA, born in August of 1876, and Delilah 20 IA, born in March of 1880. Elizabeth and the kids will be in Spokane, Washington in 1910. Southern Putman Family.

 

WALTER W. PUTNAM  Poweshiek Township, Jasper County

The son of Samuel Deloss and Sarah Putnam from Ohio and then Mercer County Missouri. He is listed as 24 IA, born in December of 1875.  His mother, Sarah E. Ockerman, is 45 IA, born in November of 1854. They were in Furnas County Nebraska in 1880. His dad died here in Iowa in 1881. Walter will be married in Reno County Kansas in 1920. A New York Dutch family.

 

HOMER L. PUTMAN  Fremont Township, Johnson County

He is a son of William Clark Putman and Sarah Frances Harding, and was with them in Floyd County in 1870, and then in Lincoln, Nebraska in 1880. Homer L. is listed as 37 WI, born in April of 1863.  His wife Katy (Katherine Frank) is 36 (30) GER, born in May of 1864.  The children are: Roy C. 11 NE, born in December of 1888, and Allie A., (listed Albert in 1920) 4 IA, born in October of 1895, and Ethel 2 IA, who was born in October of 1897. Also in the household is a boarder, Charles Gerth, 16 IL. They will be in Muscatine County Iowa in 1920, 1925 and 1930.

 

CLARENCE J. PUTNAM  Lucas Township, Johnson County

The son of the earlier listed Charles B. and Esther, and with that family in Linn County in 1880. He is now listed as 30 MI, born in January of 1870, a lodger with Nancy Corlett. In 1870, the family was in Eaton County Michigan. He will be married in Cleveland Ohio in 1910 and 1920.

 

CLYDE C. PUTNAM  Lucas Township, Johnson County

The son of Samuel D. and Sarah Putnam, and was with that family in Furnas County Nebraska in 1880. He is listed as 21 NE, born in November of 1878, a lodger with Carrie H. Coughlan, with whom he was enumerated. He is in Des Moines in 1920 and will be married then. A New York Dutch family.

 

ERNEST PUTNAM  Lucas Township, Johnson County

Ernest is listed as 32 MI, born in April of 1868, a lodger with Nancy Corlett. He is a son of Charles B. and Esther Putnam from Eaton County Michigan (1870) and Linn County Iowa (1880). They are now divorced, it would seem, and are listed separately. Ernest will be married in Iowa City, Johnson County in 1910 and in 1920.

 

HOWARD PUTNAM  Lovell Township, Jones County

Howard Bradley Putnam is listed as 55 IA, born in December of 1844 in Dubuque.  His second wife, Sarah Ann Livingston, is 50 IA, born in August of 1849.  He is a son of James Rufus Putnam and Cynthia Ann Bradley, and was born December 14, 1844. He married Margaret Jane Kline February 18, 1863. She died here September 21, 1886, and Howard married Sarah Ann Livingston on January 12, 1888. They are here through 1920. Howard will die July 8, 1924 and Sarah on October 13, 1926.

 

RUFUS A. (AUSTIN) PUTNAM  Lovell Township, Jones County

Rufus is listed as 74 MA, born in March of 1826, a boarder with George Haines. He was here in Jones County in 1860. He is Rufus Austin Putnam junior, son of Rufus Austin Putnam and Frances Highborn Porter of Fitchburg, Mass. Doesn’t look as if he ever married.

 

SIMON PUTMAN  Jackson Township, Lee County

Simon Kenton Putman is listed as 62 OH, born in January of 1838.  His wife, Hulda P. Singleton, is 60 IL, born in October of 1839.  Also in the household is their granddaughter, Elsie Raber, 13 IA, born in March of 1887. He is a son of Elijah Putman and Matilda Kenton from Champaign County Ohio and the Brown County Illinois. Simon was born in Mad River Township Ohio on January 6, 1839. He served in the Civil War as a Lieutenant in the 3rd Illinois Cavalry. He married Huldah Singleton January 20, 1859 in Mount Sterling Illinois. She was born October 2, 1838 and died January 7, 1907. They were in Mt. Sterling in the 1860, and in Ray County Missouri in 1870. In 1895 and 1900, they are in Jackson Township, Lee County Iowa. He died April 26, 1906 in Omaha, Douglas County Nebraska. CHARLES PUTMAN  Montrose Township, Lee County

Charles is listed as Chas. 27 IA, born in February of 1873. There is no wife listed.  Also in the household are: his sister, Selina (Putman) Moberg, 21 IA, born in April of 1879; his brother, Albert, 19 IA, born in February of 1881; and a boarder, Andrew Nelson, 30 SWD, born in June of 1870. The family was not in the 1880 Soundex, but obviously was here.

 

CHARLES E. (EDWARD) PUTNAM  Rapids Township, Linn County

He is 60 NH NH NH and a cashier at the bank. His wife Mary Ellen Fawcett is 53 OH and their daughter Carolyn is 30 IA and she is an editor at the paper. They have been married 36 years now. He is a son of Gideon Putnam and Sarah Rice. He was born in Nashua, New Hampshire July 10, 1839. He served in the Civil War from here in Iowa, and rose to rank of Captain. This family was in Mount Vernon, Linn County in 1870 and in Marion, Linn County in 1880. He will be here until he dies in 1913. Mary Ellen will die the following year. He was in Marion Township in 1860 through 1880.

 

CHARLES H. PUTMAN  Rapids Township, Linn County

The son of Hazeal Putman (William and Alla Putman’s son) from Fulton County Illinois. Charles H. is listed 41 IL, born in March of 1859. His wife, Lois A., is 37 NH, born in July of 1862.  Their daughter, Essie M., is 16 IA, born in April of 1884. Lois will die here in 1910, no info on Charles though. The same cemetery records show his father Hazeal died here in 1891, and his mother Lydia Miller died here in 1912. Charles was here with his folks in 1880. Charles is here in 1920 with a second wife named Winifred. Southern Putman Family.

 

FRANK H. (HOWARD) PUTMAN  Rapids Township, Linn County

The son of Charles Edward Putnam and Mary Ellen Fawcett, Frank H. is listed as 33 IA, born in March of 1867.  His wife, Maude Pickthal, is 25 ENG, born in February of 1875. He was with his folks here in 1880. He will be in Kane County Illinois in 1910 and then they are in Minneapolis, Minnesota in the 1920 Census.

 

FRED A. PUTNAM  Rapids Township, Linn County

His mother was the Louisa Putnam who was widowed here in 1880. His dad was Fred Putnam and they were in Rock County Wisconsin in 1870. He is listed as 27 IA, born in April of 1873.  His wife, Nellie M., is 17 IA, born in October of 1882.  Their daughter, Ruth A., is 11 months IA, born in June of 1899.

 

WILLIAM S. PUTMAN  Rapids Township, Linn County

He is listed as 55 MA (really NH), born in September of 1845, a lodger with Helen Davis. He is William Skinner Putnam, a son of Gideon Putnam and Sarah Rice. He was born in Nashua, New Hampshire. He was here in 1880 and was a teacher. In 1910 and 1920, he will be at The Old Soldier's home in Marshall County Iowa. He never married.

 

IRVING E. (ELLSWORTH) PUTNAM  Franklin Township, Linn County

The son of Henry Harrison and Cornelia Putnam from Taylor County and he is also listed back home with them now. He is 21 IA, born in October of 1878, a lodger with Thomas Wilkerson, with whom he was enumerated. He will be married and in Chicago in 1910.

 

CHARLES B. (BERNARD) PUTNAM  Marion Township, Linn County

Charles is listed as 58 MI, born in May of 1842.  His wife, Lauretta Bowen, is 37 IA, born in August of 1862. There are two step children listed: Lee Smith, 17 IA, born in October of 1886, (sic) and Jerome Smith, 15 IA, born in December of 1889. (sic). Laura is a third wife and was married to a Smith before hitching up with Charlie. In 1880, Charles was here with a wife listed as Hester, actually Esther Carroll. The same gal is nearby but listed as Esther and living with her daughter. Looks like Charles and she got divorced and he remarried this sweet young thing sometime in the 1890s. Charles and Esther were first shown together in 1870 in Eaton County Michigan, and they were here in 1880 together. He was divorced and then married Nettie Phillips who was first married to Albert Collins. He will die here February 3, 1931, and Loretta will die in 1923. Charles is a son of Orlin L. Putnam and Caroline Brown. He was born in Clarendon, Calhoun County Michigan. He was at home there in 1860 in Eckford, Calhoun County. His folks are from New Hampshire and then New York.

 

CHARLES C. PUTNAM  Marion Township, Linn County

A son of the above Charles B. Putnam, and was with him in the 1880 census. He is 24 IA, born in November of 1875. His wife Hattie Evelyn Price is 25 OH, born in February of 1875.  The children are: Ethel Mae 5 IA, born in December of 1894, and Hazel Vivian 3 IA, born in February of 1897. He is in Fargo, North Dakota in 1910 and 1920 with a new wife Bessie Johnson.

 

ESTHER PUTNAM  Marion Township, Linn County

Esther is listed as 52 NY and says she is widowed, born in September of 1847, mother-in-law of Lee Howich 34 CAN and his wife Nellie 26 MI. Interesting. Esther Carroll was the wife of Charles B. Putnam. Charles has a new and younger wife. Looks like a divorce and Esther is living with her daughter Nellie. The family was first seen in 1870 in Eaton County Michigan. Ether will die in Delaware County December 1, 1917.

 

FREDERICK O. PUTNAM  Marion Township, Linn County

Also here is a nephew James Weir 10 IA NY IA. He is a son of Henry Putnam and Elizabeth Beaudette from here in Lyon County. His folks were from French speaking Canada. His dad died here in 1893, and his widowed mom was in Sioux County in 1900. He was in the 1895 State Census. They are here still in 1910, and will be in Grant County South Dakota by 1920.

 

HELEN M. PUTNAM  South Township, Madison County

She is Helen M. King, the wife of George William Putnam, and is 45 NH, born in May of 1855.  The children at home are: Ray W. (Roy Willis) 19 IA, born in February of 1881, Mattie A. 16 IA, born in January of 1884, and Frances N. 12 IA, born in May of 1888. They were in Grundy County Iowa in 1880 and 1895. She will die here in 1919, and George in 1918, but have no idea where he is now. They are all here in 1910 though.

 

HARTLEY S. (STEWART) PUTNAM  Pleasant Grove Township, Mahaska County

A son of Harvey Cornelius, and shown in that family in 1860 in Poweshiek County. Hartley S. is listed as 41 IA, born in June of 1858.  His wife, Martha Elizabeth Kannals, is 41 IA, born in June of 1858.  The children are: Lulu 19 IA, born in July of 1880, Elmer 17 IA, born in March of 1883, Edith Pearl 14 IA, born in December of 1885, and Florence 13 IA, born in June of 1886. Martha will die and he will marry Charlotte Quackenbush in 1910 and they are in Brooking County South Dakota in 1915.

 

WILLIAM F. (FRANKLIN) PUTMAN  Knoxville Township, Marion County

He is listed as 53 IA, born in September of 1846. His wife, Mary Ann Rezin, is 51 OH, born in July of 1848.  The children at home are: Loren 22 IA, born in May of 1878, Verda 17 IA, born in February of 1883, and Lloyd (Chester Lloyd) 13 IA, born in September of 1886. They were here in 1880 as was his dad. He is a son of James Rufus Putnam. They were all here in 1880. They are in Union County in 1910, and back here in 1920.

The son of Nahum Daniel Putnam, George is listed as 40 IA, born in November of 1859.  His wife Emma A. Lukehart is 34 IA, born in September of 1865.  The children are: Ben D. 14 IA, born in January of 1886, Inez 12 IA, born in July of 1888, Estella M. 10 IA, born in October of 1889, and Ed G. 3 IA, born in July of 1896. George will be here till he dies in 1917.

 

ALVA PUTMAN  Marshall Township, Marshall County

Alva is listed as 30 IA, born in March of 1870.  His wife, Nettie Desch, is 28 IA, born in August of 1872.  There are no children listed.  His sister, Persey (listed Harriet P. in 1880), is 24 IA, born in February of 1876. They are kids of Charles and Anna Putman from New York and were all in Franklin County Iowa in 1880. They are sorta here in 1905, but actually Alva and the family are in Austin, Mower County Minnesota. He is a barber here and there. Dutch family from New York State.

 

NAHUM D. (DAN) PUTNAM  Marshalltown, Marshall County

He is not in the index, as he is presently in Colorado. He will return here shortly, as Mary Spake his wife will die February 18, 1902 and Nahum will die here February 23, 1902.

He is the son of Nahum Dan Putnam and Mary Spake. Hiram Edgar is listed as 38 IA, born in September of 1861.  His wife Rosella Shank is 38 IL, born in September of 1889.  The children are: Mary (Edith Mary) 10 IA, born in September of 1861, and Russell 6 IA, born in September of 1893.  Also in the household are Edgar's nephew, John Meech 16 IA, born in July of 1883; one boarder; and a hired man. He has been here in 1870 and 1880, and will be in 1910 and 1920.

The widow of Eri Carlton Putnam. Eliza (Goodrich) Putnam is listed as 61 NY, born in October of 1838, the mother-in-law of John Volgamore. John had married her daughter Mary Elizabeth. She and Eri were here in 1895 and then he died here August 26, 1896. He was a son of John Putnam (1741) and Elizabeth Carlton of Fitchburg, Massachusetts.

James Eugene is listed as 26 NE, born in December of 1873.  His wife, Mary E. Christianson, is 31 IA, born in October of 1868.  There are no children listed.  Also in the household is a servant, Chris Christiansen, 14 IA, born in August of 1885 (Mary’s brother). He is another son of Eri Carlton and Eliza Putnam, and has been here since he was born.

Louis is listed as 28 IA, born in August of 1871.  His wife Cora Summey is 27 IL, born in September of 1872.  Their son, Hobart, is 3 IA, born in April of 1897. He is a son of Dennison and Josephine and was born in Hardin County. He will still be here in 1910 and 1920.

He is listed as 52 NY, born in December of 1847.  His wife, Josephine Boyles, is 53 PA, born in May of 1847.  The children at home are: Addie A. 23 IA, born in April of 1877, Edson A. 23 IA, born in April of 1877, and Frank 19 IA, born in January of 1881. He is a son of William Rodman Putnam. They were in Hardin County Iowa in 1870 and 1880. They are here in 1910 living with Addie and her new husband. He will die here in 1918, Josephine in 1921.

He is listed as 27 WI, born in June (16th) of 1873.  His wife Adelaide Amelia Burleson is 28 NY, born in April (17th) of 1872.  Their daughter, G. D. (Gertrude Delight), is 2 months IA, born in April (26th) of 1900. He is a son of Herbert Langdon Putnam and Laura Hale. He was born in Rubicon, Dodge County Wisconsin. Herbert was a son of Pliney Putnam from Vermont. The whole family moved to Filmore County Nebraska in the 1870s. Pliney, Herbert and Edmund are all shown there in 1880. They are in Sioux Falls South Dakota in 1910 through 1930 or more.

Charles is listed 27 IA, born in November of 1872.  His wife Helen Peterson is listed as 24 GER, born in March of 1876. There are no children listed. He is a son of Frederick Puttmann and Christine Florkie, both from Germany. Frederick is a son of Barnard and Gertrude Puttmann from Germany. Part of the German Puettman family. Helen is a daughter of John Peterson and Dorothy Foch from Germany. Charlie was at home in Scott County in 1880 at age 7 IA and then with them in Rutland, Woodbury County in 1885 and 1895. They are in Woodbury County in 1910 and 1925.

William is listed as 36 GER, born in March of 1864.  His wife, Annie, is 26 IA, born in September of 1873.  The children are: Minnie 6 IA, born in December of 1893, and Walter 7 months IA, born in October of 1899.  Also in the household are William's brother, Christian 31 GER, born in November of 1868, and a boarder, William Retberg, 24 GER. George Thomas is listed as 48 IL, born in March of 1852.  His wife Mary Reuter Schmidt is 37 LXB, born in August of 1863.  The children are: Mary V. 16 IA, born in August of 1884, Winifred 15 IA, born in September of 1885, Charles 14 IA, born in March of 1886, and William L. 11 IA, born in December of 1889. They are all in Dubuque by 1910. He is a son of Jacob Putnam and Eliza Wicks from Jackson County. Jacob is a son of Philip Putman and Christina Lucretia Nobles from St. Johnsville, Montgomery County New York. They are part of the Dutch Putman family.

Medbury, 81 NY, born in October of 1818. They were in Linn County in 1860 and 1880, but not listed in 1870. They will be in Akron, Plymouth County in 1910. King is 30 IA FRA FRA, born in April of 1870.  The children are: a daughter Elmo A. 9 IA, born in December of 1890, Elmer W. 7 IA, born in July of 1892, Madeline D. 3 IA, born in October of 1896, and Doris E. 10 months IA, born in July of 1899. They will be in Pennington County South Dakota about 1907 and remain there through 1930 at least.

I don't find him in Ohio in 1870 as I don't have an index and he isn't in the 1880 anywhere.

He is 64 NH, born in August of 1834.  His son, listed as Abe 26 IA, born in May of 1874. In 1880 the son was listed as Arthur age 6 and in 1910 will be listed as Arthur L. I assume the actual recording was A. L. as only initials were used for his dad, and the initials looked like Abe. Anyway, the name is Arthur. Also in the household are: a housekeeper, Hessie Elwell, 32 OH, born in March of 1878, the house keeper's son, Frank Elwell, 8 IA, born in July of 1891, and a male servant, W. H. White, 25 Iowa, born in January of 1875. He is the eldest son of George Putnam and Elizabeth Perkins from Charlestown, N. H.

Adrian Eric Putnam is listed as 23 IA, born in March of 1876.  His wife, Bertha Phillips, is 20 IA, born in January of 1880.  Their daughter, Violet, is 11 months IA, born in August of 1898. He is a son of James Rufus Putnam and his second wife Rosina Eastman, and was shown in the family in 1880 in Marion County Iowa. They are in Davidson County Tennessee in 1920 and 1930 where he runs a school.

He is listed as Lurine Putnum, 59 NH, born in October of 1840.  His sister, Belle, is 51 VT, born in October of 1848. He was here since 1880. He is another son of George Putnam and Elizabeth Perkins from Charlestown, New Hampshire.

He is listed as 49 VT, born in November of 1850.  His wife, Margaret Anne Morris, is 40 OH, born in November of 1859.  The children at home are: Bessie B. 10 KS, born in April of 1890, Marie E. 9 IA, born in March of 1891, Ina C. 4 IA, born in September of 1895, and George F. 3 months IA, born in February of 1900. He is a son of George Putnam and Elizabeth Perkins. He was born in Fairlee, Vermont, and was shown with the family in 1860 in Lee County Illinois and in 1870 in Ogle County Illinois. In 1880 he was single in Saunders County Nebraska. Also in the household are Louisa F. Chambers, 32 MO, born in August of 1867, and her daughter Florence S. Chambers, 9 MO, born in February of 1891. Louisa is listed as sister, but is probably Margaret’s sister, as Charles didn’t have a sister named Louisa as far as I can determine, and not one born in Missouri. Charles is widowed here in 1910. Then he will be with his kids in Omaha, Nebraska in 1920 and Fort Collins, Colorado in 1930. He will die there in 1937.

The son of George McIntyre Putnam, Fred Ellsworth is listed as 30 IL, born in December of 1869 in Ogle County Illinois, a boarder with Missouri A. Kearney. He was here with his folks in 1880. He will marry Carrie Jane Wilson here in January 1901.

George McIntyre is listed as 62 NH, born in August of 1827.  His wife Emily Alice Jackson is 58 IL, born in December of 1841.  The children at home are: William G. 27 IL, born in July of 1872, Myrtle E. 25 IA, born in May of 1875, Blanche B. 20 IA, born in December of 1879, Frances L. 19 IA, born in May of 1881, and Edna M. 17 IA, born in May of 1883.  Also in the household are two servants: Harvey G. Spence 23 IA, born in February of 1877, and Clarence Logan 18 IA, born in September of 1881. They were here in 1880, he is a son of George Putnam and Elizabeth Perkins of Charlestown, NH. They were in Ogle County Illinois in the late 1860s to mid 1870s, before coming here.

 

BURT PUTMAN  Kane Township, Pottawattamie County

Burt is listed as 14 NY, born in March of 1886, the grandson of Lewis P. Servis. There are three other kids, probably siblings, in the Orphanage here in Kane. Something happened to dad and mom it appears. He is Bert Mark Putman and will marry Ada Sanders here by 1910. They will be in Seattle by 1920 and California in 1930 and 1940. No ideas as to the daddy except he was born in Pennsylvania.

 

CLARA, EDGAR, LILLY PUTNAM  Kane Township, Pottawattamie County

Clara is listed as 5 IA, born in February of 1895, an inmate in the Christian Home. There are other of her siblings here as well. In 1910 and 1920, she is in Mills County in the Iowa Institution for the Feeble Minded. Edgar is listed as 10 IA, born in September of 1889, also an inmate in the Christian Home. It would be an orphanage. The next time I find him is in 1930 in the McDonald County Hospital in Missouri where he will be till he dies in 1949. Lilly is listed as 7 IA, born in March of 1893. They are all kids of Eri Areli Putnam and Florence Adelaide Libby. The folks were married October 11, 1883 in Rock Island County Illinois. Eri is a son of George Putnam and Polly Temple from New York and New England before that. Eri went bonkers in the 1880s and 90s. There is a newspaper article that Matt Putnam found where in 1896 he tried to kill all his kids and in 1897 was listed as incurably insane. On March 3, 1898 he deserted the family and in 1910 he is in Muscatine County Iowa and that’s the last I can find him. In1900 Florence is still hiding out in Rock Island County Illinois after hiding the kids away here.

 

FRANCES and GEORGE PUTNAM  Kane Township, Pottawattamie County

She is listed as 22 IA, born in April of 1878, the niece of Daniel J. Rockwell. Her brother George 18 IA is here as well. He was born after the 1880 and I don't find Frances in that census, so have no idea as to their parents. George is married in Custer County South Dakota in 1915. I don’t find him yet in 1910. Gee, wonder if related to Norman Rockwell. If they are, maybe he drew a picture of them having a sundae at the local drug store fountain.

 

M. (MARSHALL) PUTNAM  Pleasant Grove Township, Pottawattamie County

Marshall Danforth Putnam is listed as 46 MI, born in March of 1854. His wife, Betsey Jane Sneath, is 47 NJ, born in January of 1853. The children are: Della 21 IL, born in July of 1878, Frederick Benjamin 17 IA, born in March of 1883, George Washington, 15 IA, born in October of 1884, and Harry Deloss 12 IA, born in November of 1887. Marshall is a son of Benjamin Franklin Putnam and Alma Stone Johnson. He was born in La Grange, Cass County Michigan on March 12, 1854. Betsy is the first of his three wives. This family was in Owen, Winnebago County Illinois in the 1880 census, and in Floyd County Iowa in the State 1895 census. He will head to California and die in Pomona, Los Angeles County in 1943. His line goes back from Benjamin to Uzziel Putnam and Mary Trask from New York, via Vermont and then Massachusetts before that.

He is listed as Chris Puttmann, 61 GER, born in March of 1844. His wife, Anna, is 53 GER, born in April of 1847.  The children at home are: Chris 24 IA, born in December of 1875, Fred 21 IA born in August 1878, Louis 19 IA born in September 1880, and Minnie 15 IA born in May 1885. The William Putman presently in Plymouth County Iowa may be his brother. Ages similar and both are from Germany.

He is James, son of James Putman and Letha Darnell from Brown County Illinois. He is 49 IL KY KY, born in March of 1851.  His wife, H. Maude White, is 42 WI OH NY, born in March of 1858.  Their daughter, Mabel M., is 17 IA, born in September of 1882. He was a farmer until 1877 when he became a druggist in Holland, Grundy County Iowa. In 1881 he married Maud White daughter of Julian and Hattie White. Maud was born March 31, 1858 and she died November 23, 1904. He is in Lakefield, Jackson County Minnesota on 1905. James died January 9, 1913 in Lakefield, Minnesota. Southern Putman family.

 

H. C. (HARVEY CORNELIUS) PUTNAM  Jackson Township, Poweshiek County

Harvey Cornelius is listed as 77 VT, born October 19, 1821.  His wife Sarah A. Steward is 74 NY, born in September 13, 1929. There are no children listed at home any more. He is a son of Harvey Putnam and Rebecca Steward of Bethel, Vermont. They live in Deep River, having moved here from Brooklyn in the 1860s. Harvey will die here on June 17, 1909 and Sarah on February 5, 1911. Sarah is widowed in 1910 and is living here with her son William.

 

MARY D. PUTNAM  Davenport Township, Scott County

The widow of Charles Edwin Putnam, Mary Louisa Duncan, is listed as 67 IL, born in September of 1832.  The children at home are: William C. (Clement) 37 IA, born in June of 1862, Elizabeth D. (Duncan) 33 IA, born in January of 1867, and Edward K. (Kirby) 30 IA, born in November of 1869. She will die here in 1903. Charles died here July 19, 1887.

He is listed as 42 IA, born in June of 1857.  His wife, Anna T. Gillian, is 43 PA, born in June of 1856.  The children at home are: Mary T. 15 IA, born in September of 1884, Agnes E. 13 IA, born in December of 1886, Anne F. 11 IA, born in August of 1888, and Henretta C. 10 IA, born in February of 1890. He is a son of Abraham H. Putman and Elizabeth Moran of Bloomfield, Davis County. Abe was a son of Elijah Putman and Elizabeth Duff. Southern Putman family. They are here in 1910. Anna Gillian, his wife, will die here in 1917, and he will die here October 15, 1935.

Elizabeth Beaudettte is the widow of Henry Putnam (Patenaude) from Canada. Henry died here May 30, 1893. She will die here September 2, 1905. Elizabeth is listed as 53 CND, born in December of 1846.  The children at home are: Marguerite 28 IA, born in September of 1871, Alfred 24 IA, born in November of 1875, Luella 20 IA, born in June of 1879, Charles 18 IA, born in November of 1881, and Cecelia 16 IA, born in October of 1883.

He is listed as Homer 49 VT, born in June of 1850.  His wife Mary Burke is 49 NY, born in January of 1851.  The children at home are: Dennis 25 IA, born in April of 1875, George 20 IA, born in October of 1879, Mary 18 IA, born in September of 1881, Horace 16 IA, born in July of 1883, Peter 15 IA, born in April of 1885, Laura 13 IA, born in April of 1887, Julia 9 IA, born in October of 1890, Blanche 7 IA, born in February of 1893, and Evelyn 4 IA, born in January of 1896. He is a son of Henry Putnam (born Patenaude) and Elizabeth Beaudette who is widowed and listed above. He was listed as Horace here in 1880 and will be listed as Horace again in 1910 and 1920 in O’Brien County Iowa.

 

STELLA PUTMAN  Sheridan Township, Sioux County

Stella is listed as 13 IA, born in May of 1887, the cousin of Lowell Moss. She has to be somehow connected to Horace or Henry Putnam, as they are both also in O’Brien County in 1910. She is not the daughter of George Putnam and Emma Lukehart from Marshall County, and who is also there now and was in 1895, 1900, and 1905.

The son of William and Martha Putman, Lester Richard is listed as 42 MI, born in August of 1857.  His wife, Kate (Kate Ann Pollack), is 40 MI, born in August of 1860.  The children are: Vance W. 17 IA, born in July of 1882, Wade M. 15 IA, born in September of 1884, Vera E. 12 IA, born in March of 1888, Frank C. 10 IA, born in April of 1890, Nora M. 7 IA, born in July of 1892, and Gertrude I. 6 IA, born in December of 1894. William R. Putman and Martha Jane Smith from Herkimer County New York. Lester was with his folks in 1860 in Leroy Township, Ingham County Michigan. His grandparents were Richard Henry Putman and Nancy Schalk from Montgomery County New York. This is the Dutch Putman line. He is widowed in Los Angeles in 1920. The son Vance will marry Carrie E. Adams and they are in Berrien County Michigan in 1910.

The son of Sydney C. Putnam from Wardsboro, Vermont, and was here in 1880 with his folks. He is listed as 24 IA, born in November of 1875.  His wife, Mable A., is 18 IA, born in November of 1882.  There are no children listed, as they were just married. They are here in 1910 and 1920.

Henry Harrison is listed as 59 VT, born in August of 1840.  His wife Cornelia Ann Chamberlain is 51 NY, born in November of 1848.  The children at home are: Etta E. 27 IL, born in December of 1872, Irvin (Irving Ellsworth) 21 IA, born in October of 1878, Charles H. (Henry) 18 IA, born in July of 1881, Clyde C. (Chester) 17 IA, born in April of 1883, Leslie R. (Ray), a son, 15 IA, born in May of 1885, and Stella B. (Bertha) 9 IA, born in January of 1891. He's been here since the 1870s. He is a son of Prentiss Putnam. Henry will die here in 1911, Cornelia in 1928.

 

JASON P. (PRENTISS) PUTNAM  Benton Township, Taylor County

The son of Henry Harrison Putnam, Jason Prentiss is listed as 30 IL, born August 21, 1869 in Amboy, Illinois.  His wife, Alta May Probst, is 26 IA, born in December of 1874.  Their son, Virgil Glen, is 1 IA, born in May of 1899. Jason and Alta were married in Bedford, Iowa on February 15, 1894. This family goes back to Windsor County Vermont and then Massachusetts before that.

 

SIDNEY C. (CHASE) PUTNAM  Benton Township, Taylor County

Sidney is listed as 57 VT, born in November of 1842.  His wife Josephine A. Smith is 55 VT, born in February of 1844.  Their son, George E., is 17 IA, born in March of 1883. They have been here a while now. He is a son of Prentiss Putnam and Jemima Chase. He was born November 6, 1842 in Whittingham, Vermont.

 

JOHN A. (ANDERSON) PUTNAM  Pleasant Township, Wapello County

The son of Uzziel Franklin Putnam and Martha Jane Cannon, and was with that family in Reno County Kansas in 1880. He is listed as 32 KS, born in January of 1868.  His wife, Ruth Ellen Holmes, is 31 PA, born in July of 1868.  The children are: Harry A. 11 IL, born in September of 1888, Leroy E. 10 IL, born in February of 1890, Lillian 8 IL, born in December of 1892, Victor J. 6 IL, born in October of 1893, Lola N. 4 IL, she was born in August of 1895, Lester W. 2 IL, born in June of 1897, and Karl W. 11 months IL, born in July of 1899. In 1910, the family will be in Paris, Monroe County Missouri. Both Carl and Lester will have died by 1910. In the meanwhile, they will have a couple more kids, go to Manitoba, Canada, and then head to Missouri.

 

ALBERT PUTMAN  Palmyra Township, Warren County

The son of James Rufus Putnam and his first wife Cynthia Ann Bradley. Albert is listed as 50 IA, born in March of 1850. His wife Catherine Nancy Pyle is 48 IN, born in June of 1852.  The children at home are: Thomas 16 IA, born in August of 1883, Catherine 13 IA, born in March of 1887, and a son Ober 9 IA born in August of 1890.

Another son of James Rufus, Asa Lloyd is listed as 45 IA, born in April of 1855.  His wife, Sarah Ellen Pyle, is 47 IN, born in December of 1853. Their son Charles has married and has his own family nearby.

 

CHARLES E. (ERNEST) PUTNAM  Richland Township, Warren County

The son of Asa Lloyd Putnam, Charles Ernest is 26 IA, born in April of 1874. His wife, Myra Belle Seevers, is 23 IA, born in February of 1877.  Their son, Robert D., is 6 months IA, born in December of 1899.  Also in the household is his niece, Lena D. Robertson, 15 IA, born in January of 1885. Asa was a son of James Rufus and has been here all his life.

 

ALBERT PUTNAM  Union Township, Warren County

 James Albert is listed as 20 IA, born in July of 1879.  His wife, Minnie Goss, is 18 IA, born in August of 1881.  Their daughter, Lenora, is 6 months IN, born in January of 1900. They will have one more daughter Thelma in 1901, and both will die in infancy. His father is the listed Albert here in Warren County. Al junior was at home with his folks in 1880. He is a grandson of James Rufus Putnam. They are here in 1910 and he will have a new wife by 1920.

John William Putman is 48 VA, born in April of 1852.  His wife Mary Rosella Whitsel is 36 IA, born in March of 1864.  The children at home are: a daughter, Stacie E. 16 IA, born in April of 1884, John 14 IA, born in December of 1885, Clara B. 12 IA, born in February of 1888, Hulda M. 7 IA, born in February of 1893, and Jacob G. 1 IA, born in August of 1898. He is John William Putman, a son of Jacob G. Putman Junior and Ellen Edmundson from Hampshire County Virginia. German Family, Maryland to Virginia to here.

 

ORAL PUTNAM  Marion Township, Washington County

Oral is listed as 15 IA, born October 18, 1884, a hired hand for Samuel S. McKee. He is a son of Charles C. Putman from here. He is a son of the first marriage of Charles and Ellen. His dad has remarried Mina Bellville and is here in town too. Guess Oral and mom may not get along well.

Another son of Jacob G. junior, German folks from Hampshire County Virginia. Thomas is listed as 49 VA, born March 28, 1851. There is no wife listed. His wife, Laura Essley had died in 1889.   The children at home are:  Jennie (Eva Virginia) 18 IA, born in November of 1881, and Clevie (Cleveland, a daughter) 15 IA, born in October of 1884.

A son of Jacob Putman, Jr. He is 44 IA, born in March of 1856.  His second wife, Mina J. Bellville, is 38 IA, born in December of 1861.  Their daughter, Nellie, is 18 IA, born in October of 1881. German family from VA. A son, Oral age 15 is listed with Samuel McKee nearby. They are here in 1910

 

JACOB PUTNAM  Washington Township, Washington County

The son of Jacob junior, Jacob G. III, is listed as 53 IA, born in May of 1847.  His wife, Lucy Ellen Reeves is 43 IA, born in September of 1856.  Their daughter, Stacie A., is 25 IA, born in October of 1874.  Also in the household are their son-in-law, Frank W.  Brinton, 40 IA, born in July of 1859, and their daughter, Indiana (Putnam) Brinton, 21 IA, born in December of 1878. German family out of Hampshire County Virginia (West Virginia now).

 

CHARLES M. (MARION) PUTMAN  Wright Township, Wayne County

He is 33 IA, born in September of 1866.  His wife, Ivy A. Gordon, is 29 MO, born in September of 1870.  The children are: two daughters: Georgia 10 IA, born in January of 1890, and Bessie 5 IA, born in February of 1895; and Rossie 1 IA, born in July of 1898. Rossie is listed a son here and a daughter in 1920. Also there is his sister-in-law, Stella Gordon, 21 MO, born in September of 1878. He was born here, a son of William Marion Putman and Mary Jane Hayes Putman. He is a grandson of Joseph Putman and Polly Hackleman from Rush County Indiana and Pendleton County Kentucky before that. James is listed as 40 OH (IL in 1910 and 1920), born in February of 1860.  His second wife, Hannah Hyde or Heide, is 32 IN, born in August of 1867.  Their son Miles is 9 IA, born in April of 1891.  James was married to Mary L. Sanders before. In the 1925 State Census Miles states his mother was Ella Morse, so James was married 3 times it seems. Also in the household is Pauline Julius, 20 IA, born in November of 1879. They are here in 1910 and in 1920. James is a son of James Putnam and Mary Ann Snyder and grandson of Edward Putnam and Lydia Melandy from New Hampshire to New York to Lake County Illinois where this James was born.

                                     

CHARLES L. PUTNAM  Bloomfield Township, Winneshiek County

Charles L. is listed as 56 NY, born in April of 1844, and is living alone. He is a son of John Putnam (2853). His mother Hannah is living with the following Emma Putnam, his brother’s widow. Charles was in Crawford County Iowa in 1880. He will be here in 1910 living with his daughter Alvira Myer.

 

EMMA I. PUTNAM  Bloomfield Township, Winneshiek County

Emma Irene Dean is the widow of Surreno Putnam. She is listed as 47 CT (NY in 1880 and in 1920), born in February of 1853.  The children at home are: Bertha M. 27 IA, born in August of 1872, Hattie L. 26 IA, born in September of 1873, Ray L. 21 IA, born in September of 1879, Lloyd L. 9 IA, born in August of 1890, (Twin), and Floyd A. 9 IA, born in August of 1890, (Twin).  Also in the household is her mother-in-law, Hannah Putnam, 82 NY, born in January of 1817. Hannah was the wife of John Putnam from Lewis County New York, and has been here since the 1870 census. Emma will still be here widowed in 1910 and 1920.

 

FRANK PUTNAM  Decorah Township, Winneshiek County

Frank is listed as 41 NY, born in April of 1859.  His wife, Prudence Morrison, is 41 IA, born in August of 1859.  The children are: Grace M. 19 IA, born in May of 1881, Ora K. 10 IA, born in December of 1889, and Charles A. 6 IA, born in January of 1896. Also in the household is his mother, Julia 63 NY, born in December of 1836. He was here in 1880. He is a son of John Southwick Putnam and Julia Almira Cooley from Crown Point, Essex County New York. He was shown at there in 1860. I don’t find him in 1910, but in 1920 he is in Charles City Floyd County boarding. Says he is married and a salesman for a brush company, Probably Fuller Brush. Don’t find the rest of the family or him again.

 

FRED PUTTMANN  Rutland, Woodbury County

He is 58 GER GER GER and his wife Christina is 56 GER. They have Rudolph 22 IA, Amanda 17 IA and Fred 14 IA. They have been married 30 years, and were in Blue Grass, Scott County Iowa in 1880. They are indexed as Pittmann, and in 1880 the spelling was Puettmann. It is Puttman from 1910 on though. Not one of ours though.
