KENTUCKY

Census Reports

1800 – 1900

=============

UPDATED AUGUST 19, 2021

The entire state of Kentucky was originally part of Augusta County, Virginia. In 1776 it became Kentucky County, Virginia and in 1780 was divided into three counties. Kentucky became a state, the 15th, in 1792. The first Federal Census taken was in 1810.

The following is a listing of early Putman and Putnam families as they are listed in the existing census reports covering Kentucky.

In the 1810 census both males and females are broken into 0-9, 10- 15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.

In the 1820 census males are broken down 0-9, 10-15, 16-18, 19-25, 26-44, 45 and older. Females are divided 0-9, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.

In the 1830 and 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.

From 1850 on ages and states of birth are shown. In 1880 places of birth are listed for the person, their father and their mother. In the 1880 Soundex, only families with children under 10 are listed.

Most of the lines in Kentucky are part of the Southern Putman line. You can look on this website under Southern Putman Families, then go to Kentucky. Most lines are under Jabel Putman’s sons and Henry Putman. There is one major New England line, Joseph Putnam from Sudbury Massachusetts who came to Louisville very early on. His early lines are listed there too.

KENTUCKY 1800 CENSUS

This was taken from the tax list of June 10, 1800. It only lists the taxpayers by name and county.

HENRY PUTMAN  Mason County

Zachariah and Margaret's son from Culpeper County, Virginia. He was born there about 1747, and married Elizabeth Kendrick in the early 1770s. He served with his brother Daniel (now in South Carolina) in the Virginia Militia during the Revolution. He was listed here on various tax lists from the early 1790s on. He will be here until he dies in 1825.

JOHN PUTMAN  Mason County

Another of Zachariah's sons. He was born about 1740 in Middlesex County, Virginia. He went briefly into North Carolina, and he appears in 1788 in the Hillsborough District of Randolph (now Orange) County, North Carolina. In the 1790 Census, he is there with his wife and a young son and young daughter. It then seems he returned to Culpeper County, Virginia and joined his brother Henry on their trip here to Kentucky. I don’t find him in 1810.

ZACHARIAH PUTMAN  Mason County

He is son of Daniel Putman and Sarah Kendrick from Abbeville County, South Carolina. Daniel was a brother of the above Henry and John Putman, and a son of Zachariah and Margaret Putman. He was born on December 9, 1775. The family he was traveling with, that of John Putman was in Bourbon County, Kentucky in the late 1790s. Zachariah married Winifred Collins on January 17, 1797 there in Bourbon County.

KENTUCKY 1810 CENSUS

 HIRAM PUTMAN  Barren County

10010  00100. He is a son of John Putman and Sarah Howard of Union County, South Carolina. He was born there on October 6, 1783. His wife is Loamy Mercer, they were married in Union County June 25, 1806. Loamy was a daughter of Forester Mercer, and was born in South Carolina April 30, 1789. He'll join his brother Simeon in Monroe County, Kentucky by 1820. Simeon may well also be in the area having married another Mercer girl, Margaret or Peggy Mercer. But I do not find a listing for him. Both Hiram and Simeon will be in Kentucky through the middle 1820s and then into Tennessee.

JAMES PUTMAN  Bracken County

10110  20100. He is a son of Henry Putman and Elizabeth Kendrick, and was born in Culpeper County, Virginia in about 1777. He married Elizabeth Kendrick (another Betsy, not his own mommy you sillies) on August 29, 1799 in Bourbon County, Kentucky. She was a daughter of Benjamin Kendrick and Frances Corbin. They soon moved to Bracken County, Kentucky as their son William was born here in 1808. The family will move to Monroe County, Indiana in 1825.

WILLIAM PUTMAN  Bracken County

01010  10100. Another of Henry's sons, born in Virginia in about 1782. He married Elizabeth Bromley on October 27, 1802. Elizabeth will die, and he will marry Lucy Johnson September 14, 1816 in Ohio. They will remain there a while, and then they will be back here in 1820 and 1830. By 1840 the family is in Montgomery County, Indiana, and he will be on his third wife, Mary Ann Harper.

DANIEL K. (KENDRICK) PUTMAN  Fleming County

10010  00100. He is Henry and Elizabeth Putman's son. Daniel Putman was born December 26, 1783 in Culpeper County, Virginia. He married Anne Grover in Fleming County, Kentucky on September 27, 1808. Anne was a daughter of Jonathan Mason Grover, who was a veteran of the Revolutionary War from Virginia. Daniel is a Methodist preacher and they will be here till about 1829, then move to Lewis County, Kentucky and remain there.

ZACHARIAH PUTMAN  Mason County

His wife is Winifred Collins. They were married in Bourbon County, Kentucky on January 17, 1797. He and his family will be here until 1816 when they head to Champaign County in west central Ohio, The family first settled in Mad River Township and in 1821 moved to Jackson township where he remained for the rest of his life.

JAMES PUTMAN  Pendleton County

01001  01010. He should be a son of John Putman who was the son of Zachariah Putman. He was born in Culpeper County, Virginia, moved to Kentucky and then will move again in a few years. This is a very difficult family to get a handle on.

EZEKIEL PUTMAN  Warren County

40010  20010. This is Barnet and Sarah Putman's son. Barnet was a son of Thomas Putman of Virginia and then North Carolina. Barnet took his family to the Old Pendleton District of South Carolina about 1770, and the family all came up here about 1806. Ezekiel was born in South Carolina in 1770-17. He married Hannah Brazelton in 1800 in Anderson, South Carolina. Hannah was the daughter of Jacob Brazelton and Hannah Green of Granville County, North Carolina. They will next go to Hall County, Georgia in about 1814. He is listed with 6 youngsters. There is a tiny town in Hall County, named Brazelton after Jacob. Tiny or not it is home to Road Atlanta a really fun SCCA and Pro road race circuit. We held the National Run-Offs there for some 20 years till they moved to the more centrally located Mid-Ohio road course.

HAZEAL PUTMAN  Warren County

10100  10100. This is Daniel Putman and Prudence Skelton's son. He was born in Union County, South Carolina on May 7, 1787. He moved with his family to Anderson, South Carolina in the Old Pendleton District about 1792. He married Isabel Combs here on October 18, 1806. They will be in Gibson County, Indiana with the rest of the family in another year. Daniel was a son of Barnet Putman, and brought the whole gang up here to Bowling Green in 1801, and about 1806 has headed to Indiana where he is now a Judge.

SARAH PUTMAN  Warren County

30000  00011. She is Sarah Elizabeth Rogers, Barnet Putman's widow. He died in 1809 and his wife was still alive. In every written record, it was always Barnet Putman and wife. No first name for her. Anyway, she will die in Indiana in 1818. All of Barnet’s family and kids will be off to Southern Indiana by 1816 and settle in Gibson and Warwick Counties.

THOMAS PUTMAN  Warren County

20010  20010. Another of Barnet Putman's sons. He was born in North Carolina in the late 1860s, and moved to South Carolina with the family. He married Mary Barton in South Carolina about 1800-1802. He will be going to Hall County, Georgia with his brother Ezekiel in a couple of years.

200010  20000.  He is a son of Daniel Putman and Prudence Skelton from Anderson, South Carolina. He came here with his folks in 1802 and then moved with them to Knox and then Gibson County, which was formed out of Knox in 1812. He fought in the War of 1812 while there. His dad died there in 1816, and Reding returned here from Indiana for about 5 years. He'll be off to Fulton County, Illinois in a few years. Reding was born in Union County, South Carolina April 20, 1792. He married Stacy Combs in Princeton, Indiana June 7, 1812. Reding, by the way, was my great great grandfather.

JOSEPH PUTNAM  Fayette County

100020  00100. He is Joseph Washington Putnam in Lexington with his new wife Susan Frances Hall. I am not certain who the other elder male is, possibly a brother. HENRY PUTMAN  Mason County

He and Elizabeth are in their seventies now. Henry will die here in 1825. Elizabeth must have died earlier as his estate was divided by the Court equally to all his children.

HENRY PUTMAN JR.  Mason County

100100  000100. He has just married Martha Kendrick here on June 30, 1818. They have a young son who will soon die, as he was not in the 1830 census. Their daughter Angeline will be born next year.

HIRAM PUTMAN  Monroe County

4103?0  11010. Still in the area and now joined by his brother Simeon, who as I said earlier may have been around back in 1810 but not recorded.

JOHN BARNET  Monroe County

101101  23110. Simply an old friend of the Carolina Putmans. He and his family traveled with the Putmans. Just thought you would like to know where he was farming these days. My Barnet Putman was named for this family as his dad, Thomas Putman, had married Elizabeth Barnet back in Virginia.

SIMEON PUTMAN  Monroe County

310010  30110. Another of John Putman And Sarah Howard’s sons from Union County, South Carolina. He is Hiram's brother. He was probably here in 1810 as well, but just wasn't listed or wasn't found in them thar hills. Simeon was born in 1783 and married Peggy Mercer (sister of his brother’s wife) on December 15, 1802. He will be heading to Hamilton County, Tennessee and will be there for the 1830 census.

KENTUCKY 1830 CENSUS

In the 1830 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.

WILLIAM PUTMAN  Bracken County

00110110  0010001. Henry's son now in his 40s as is his wife Lucy Johnson. As I showed in the main section, I am not certain who the various children were. I come up with too many daughters and not enough sons. He married Elizabeth Bromley on October 27, 1802. Elizabeth died April 13, 1815, and he married Lucy Johnson September 14, 1816 in Ohio. They were here in 1920. By 1840 the family is in Montgomery County Indiana. Lucy will die there in 1842 and he will marry his third wife, Mary Ann Harper. They are here in 1850.

JOHN PUTMAN  Butler County

00010001  0011001. This John Putman is Zachariah's son. I didn't find him in 1820 and this will be his last listing. He and his wife are well into their 50s and will most likely die in this decade. I still do not know his wife's name, probably never will.

JOSEPH PUTNAM  Fayette County

02101100  10010001. This is Joseph and Susan Hull Putnam. The ages appear to be wrong, both are probably in their forties, in 1840 they are in their fifties. His father Nathan should be here as well. Nathan will die of cholera here in Lexington in 1833.

20111010  02102010. Henry's son and his wife Anne Grover.

HENRY PUTMAN  Mason County

000001  01001. This is Henry junior and Martha Kendrick. His folks died in the past decade.

KENTUCKY 1840 CENSUS

In the 1830 and 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.

HENRY PUTMAN  Boone County

0000001  0000001. This is Henry Putman Junior and Martha Kendrick, now in their 40s. They moved over from Mason County where they have been for ages. They will be here again in 1850, and be living with their married daughter Angeline. That’s possibly what brought them over here in the first place.

JOSEPH PUTNAM  Fayette County

01021001  00110001. Joe and Susan Hull are still here. He has a bunch of kids that I do not find with him in Kentucky in 1850. Think I read someplace he was a teacher, and these may be kids boarding with them. His sons Nathan and Charles will be going to Oregon in 1846. He and Susan will join them in the early 1850s and remain there for the rest of their lives.

HENRY PUTMAN  Greenup County

10001 10001. He’s a son of the following John Putman and Mary Long.

Richardson on January 11, 1844, and then he will die here on November 28, 1846. His two sons, Alfred or Alpheus and Adrian are here in 1850. His father was George Washington Putnam (#652) from Ohio. His grand parents were Israel Putnam II (241) and Sarah Waldo from Ohio and Connecticut before that, and then the General himself. Yankee stock.

HENRY PUTMAN  District 1, Greenup County

He is Michael's brother, age 50 KY, and is living with Michael as a laborer. His wife must have died. Wish I knew what her name was though.

MICHAEL PUTMAN  District 1, Greenup County

He is 47 KY, and his wife Malinda Long is 39 VA. He is a cooper as is Malinda's father, Martin Long, who lives nearby. Their children at the time are John 18 KY, Elizabeth 17 KY, Jane 15 KY, James 12 KY, Benjamin 9 KY, Moses 4 KY and Nancy 2 KY. Michael will die soon and Malinda will marry Henry Plackard, and be in Spencer County, Indiana in 1860. By 1880, she will be widowed again and with her son Benjamin in Lawrence County, Illinois.

ADRIEN PUTNAM  Louisville, Jefferson County

He is 19 KY and is Al's brother and a son of George Washington and Prudence Putnam.

ALFRED PUTNAM  Louisville, Jefferson County

He is 16, Bricklayer from Kentucky. A son of George Washington Putnam and his first wife Prudence LeClair. See the 1840 entry.

E. G. (ELBRIDGE GERRY) PUTNAM  Louisville, Jefferson County

There are several Putnams now in the Louisville area. Elbridge is listed as 42 MA, Eunice Knowlton his wife 37 MA, Elizabeth 18 MA, William 12 CT and Frank 7 KY. He is listed as number 3107 in Eben Putnam's books. He was a son of John Putnam and Anna Rawson of Grafton, Massachusetts. They will have another son this December, John Edward Putnam. They will soon (about 1857) go to Kankakee County, Illinois and remain there forever.

GEORGE & RUFUS PUTNAM  Louisville, Jefferson County

George is 7 PA and Rufus 4 PA. They are with Solomon and Mary Kendall also from Pennsylvania. Solomon is a cabinet maker. They are children of George Washington Putnam and his second wife Mary Richardson. George has died in 1846. Mary Kendall is their re-married mother Mary Richardson Putnam.

JOHN PUTNAM  Louisville, Jefferson County

He is 25 MA, Coach maker from Massachusetts. No ideas here, not part of Joseph’s family.

EVA PUTMAN  Hamiltons, LaRue County

She is 45 from Kentucky and has a son John L. Putman 13 born in Illinois with her. She is living with Isaac Harris 46 KY and the family of James and Elizabeth Hornback. She is the widow of some Putman, but I have no idea as to whom. There is a marriage record in Wythe County, Virginia of an Eva Smith marrying a Joseph Putman in 1868. Joseph was a son of Thomas Putman and Mary Hoback. This came from the LDS/IGI. If Hoback and Hornback were the same family then there must be some connection here. On the other hand, I have no idea who Thomas Putman was so that is no help here either. Who knows? They are in Iowa in the State 1857 and Federal 1860 census. She is in a County Poor House there in 1880.

DANIEL K. PUTMAN  District 2, Lewis County

He is 13 KY and a student at a school with a bunch of other teenagers.

KENTUCKY 1860 CENSUS

HENRY PUTMAN  Union, Boone County

He is still living with Cumberland and Angeline Wilson. Angeline 39, is his daughter. Henry junior is 67 VA, Patsy (Martha Kendrick) is 63 KY. There are of course a whole bunch of Wilson kids living here as well. Benjamin Kendrick 45 KY and his large family live next door. Another relative.

ELIJAH H. PUTMAN  Murray, Calloway County

He is 47 SC with a son Willy or Wily age 24 KY. None of these folks in Calloway County had shown up in the 1850, but all obviously were in the state then as the kids births go back to the 1840s in Kentucky. Calloway is just over the Tennessee border. He is probably a brother of James Putman. Another possibility is that he was a son of Daniel Putman, another of James and Joice's sons that went to Tennessee and simply disappeared. The following Lucy Putman would be connected here somehow as well, married to another son possibly of Daniel.

JAMES PUTMAN  Murray, Calloway County

He is the James that was in Rutherford County, Tennessee in 1850. In 1850 he was listed as an idiot. In this 1860 listing, his wife Elizabeth is shown as head of household and he is listed last so I guess he is still a basket case of sorts. The kids and wife also match up well. In this listing James is 53 SC, Elizabeth Ann 38 TN, William Lamb 19 TN, John H. S. 15 TN, Mary N. 9 TN and Harding E. 2 KY. He is a son of Jabel and Nancy Putman of Union County, South Carolina. His wife is Elizabeth Ann Lamb. They were married in Rutherford County, Tennessee on July 23, 1844. Elizabeth was a Crick who had married William Lamb before marrying James. In fact her folks William H. Crick 64 SC and his second wife Elizabeth 54 TN and their family live next door. This line is James > Jabel > James > Zachariah II > Zachariah I > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas Putnam.

LUCY M. PUTMAN  Murray, Calloway County

This family lives either with the above Elijah or next to him. She is 47 VA and listed as being blind for 14 years. With her are Nathaniel 23 KY, Lucinda F. 17 KY, Mary F. 15 KY and Rhoda C. 12 KY. Also there is Louis Brandon 25 KY, maybe Lucy's brother or a son from a prior marriage. Lucy's husband was most likely a brother of Elijah and possibly of James.

WILLIAM PUTMAN  Hopkinsville, Christian County

He is 21 KY and Sarah Elizabeth Knight is 21 KY. He is William Riley Putman a son of Hiram Putman and Rebecca Jane Harrison from Williamson County, Tennessee. Hiram was a son of Jabel and Nancy Putman from South Carolina. He was born in Williamson County December 19, 1838. He married Sarah here in Christian County January 20, 1859. They will both be here through the 1920 census, and then die in that decade.

MARY E. PUTMAN  Fulton County

She is 18 KY living with the family of S. J. and Lucinda P. Henry. Lucinda 36 KY was probably a sister and a Putman. This is right over the line from Obian and Weakley County, Tennessee in the SW corner of Kentucky. Amos Putman’s family had moved to that part of Tennessee from Williamson County in the 1850s. These gals are probably connected to that family.

ELIZABETH PUTMAN  Underwood, Hopkins County

Elizabeth Jane Carlton is now the widow of Noah Putman, a son of Jabel and Nancy Putman from Williamson County, Tennessee. She is 44 TN. With her are these children Simeon W. 22 TN, William H. 20 TN, Virginia A. 15 TN, Martha T. 13 TN, Mary F. 10 TN and Noah H. 8 KY. Noah died of pneumonia June 28, 1855. Elizabeth will be here with her daughter Nancy Berry in 1870, and then marry James Arnold in Christian County November 24, 1874.

SIMPSON PUTMAN  Underwood, Hopkins County

Simpson is 32 TN, a farmer. His wife, Emaline Webb is 35 also from Tennessee. They were married in Rutherford County, Tennessee January 22, 1845. The children are William 14 TN, L. (Luranna) C. 11 TN, John H. 7 KY, George 6 KY, Amanda 4 KY and Mary Ann 1 KY. He is a son of Jabel and Nancy Putman from Union County, South Carolina and then Williamson County, Tennessee. They will be here forever. Simpson will die here January 4, 1884. In 1900, Emaline will be with her son George and be 75 at the time.

ALFRED G. (GEORGE) PUTNAM  Louisville, Jefferson County

He is a son of George Washington Putnam. He is still a brick mason as he was in 1850. He is still single and is now 24 KY. He’ll be married soon and be here forever.
