LOUISIANA

Census Reports

1810 – 1950

============

UPDATED MARCH 16, 2024

Louisiana became part of the United States in 1803 with the Louisiana Purchase. It became a Territory in 1805 and the 18th State in 1812. It is divided into Parishes rather than Counties. The first Federal Census was in 1810 prior to Statehood. In the 1810 census both males and females are broken into 0-9, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.

In the 1820 census males are broken down 0-9, 10-15, 16-18, 19-25, 26-44, 45 and older. Females are divided 0-9, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.

In the 1830 and 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.

From 1850 on ages and states of birth are shown.

LOUISIANA 1810 CENSUS

No Putmans or Putnams found so far. However, about 1806, Levi Putnam from Grafton, Vermont (one of the New England branch) came to Natchitoches, Louisiana to set up a trading post. He died about 1808-1809. His son Lucius Putnam remained there and died there in 1821 at about age 16. The rest of the family returned to Vermont. I guess they were too far out in the boonies to be counted or even found at census time.

LOUISIANA 1820 CENSUS

CHARLES PUTNAM  St. Landry Parish

He is in his mid 20s and single and listed 000100 000000. He is listed as being engaged in manufacturing. He looks to be Charles Caleb Putnam, son of Caleb Putnam and Hannah Russell from Newburyport, Massachusetts. He is currently also listed in Washington DC and will be married to Margaret Murdock there later this year.

LOUISIANA 1830 CENSUS

No Putmans or Putnams listed, but old Charles was there anyway.

LOUISIANA 1840 CENSUS

JOHN PUTMAN  East Feliciana Parish

Southern Putman family. 00001  2001. He is in his 20s, she in her teens. He is John James Putman son of James Putman and Elizabeth Johnson. He has just come over from Mississippi. His wife is Nancy Crittendon.

C. (CHARLES?) PUTNAM  New Orleans, Orleans Parish

Listing is 0000001-0. Not sure who he is. He may be the Charles Putnam that was here in St. Landry Parish in 1820. Or he could be a dual listing for the Caleb Putnam Jr. that is currently in Granger County, Tennessee. That Caleb's brother James Russell Putnam is here in New Orleans right now. Caleb will die here in 1862 but there's no real evidence that he settles in New Orleans until after 1860. "C" might be related to the Fanny Putnam who is here in 1850 but there's nothing to prove that either. Just not sure.

J. R. (JAMES RUSSELL) PUTNAM  New Orleans, Orleans Parish

0111001  020001. This is James Russell Putnam, Charles brother. James is a son of Caleb Putnam and Hannah Russell originally from Newburyport, Massachusetts. James was born in Topsham, Maine on November 11, 1789. He was with his brother Charles in Washington I think in 1820 and then went to Tennessee. He married Sophia Ann Perkins in Davidson County, Tennessee on October 24, 1822. They came Mississippi and then to New Orleans by 1840. He will die in Vicksburg, Mississippi on March 31, 1841. He is a dentist and inventor of dental tools. His brother Charles is here in New Orleans. His line is James > Caleb > Archelaus > Archelaus > Nathaniel > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John Putnam of Massachusetts.

LOUISIANA 1850 CENSUS

PERRY PUTNAM  East Baton Rouge Parish

He is 22 VA and in the State Penitentiary for larceny. Matt Putnam found this. "BURGLARY - A notorious scoundrel named Perry Putnam, alias John Low, was arrested in the First Municipality, on Wednesday night last, charged with an attempted burglary on board the steamboat Hard Times. Low had cut through a window and was about getting into a state-room, when he was discovered. He was locked up with a man named Charles Brandle, whom he knocked down about 4 o'clock yesterday morning and robbed of his cap. Mr. Low was committed to the parish prison to await a trial before the First District Court."

LOUISIANA 1950 CENSUS

In the 1940 census and especially now in the 1950 Census, the handwriting on the sheets is a bit better. But now that people are using Ancestry and Family Search and putting their family trees up on the sites, and the sites themselves have much better search engines and send you to a whole bunch of info docs and records. I now can find a family sheet on about everyone and many on the wife’s side. When I first started doing this in the very early 1970s, all that was available to see was up to the 1900. There was no such thing as on-line and the computers then were the size of a locker room. I had to drive out to Waltham, Massachusetts to the U. S. Library, beg for a film real of the dates and State I wanted and then look at it through a visual device in a back dark room and literally go page to page, county to county and write the info down on paper with a pencil. At that time, really the most people doing genealogy were older women, mostly retired school teachers in their 70s and 80s, who would send you hand written trees and info and stuff that they had back a couple of generations. Once in a while I would get an actual typewritten document. Wow! Got much better in the 1990s. Now it is soooo easy to get info you didn’t think was possible. Back in the 70s I tried calling folks, and got a hold of several who had info. Now just an e-mail can bring in a ton of info. Anyway, really enjoy these censuses, and if you can add or correct, please let me know so I can help others.
