MAINE 1950 CENSUS

I see a couple of interesting things in this 1950 census. There were a surprising number of people who were born within 7 days of Christmas over the years and an even larger number, over a dozen, who died between December 23 and December 26 over the years. Guess too much celebrating with good ole Saint Nick. The census records for here showed 210 folks named Putnam. There were another 22 indexed as Putman, but only 2 were actual Putmans, the Dutch line, and the other 20 were Putnams just misspelled on the entry form. So, start reading and enjoy meeting these folks.

PALMER C. (COSSLETT) PUTNAM  Southwest Harbor, Hancock County

This is a tricky one. He is 49 NY and is married to Helen Bradley Smith 35 RI. She was previously married to Joseph Head about 1936 and has 3 Head kids from that marriage with them. Palmer was born July 13, 1900 in Canandaigua, Ontario County New York and will die in Atascadera, San Luis Obispo County California November 28, 1984. He is a son of George Palmer Putnam and Emily Jane Smith and was with them in New York City in 1920. He is listed there as a son, but I can’t find him on any of George’s trees. In 1930 he is in New York City with Emily who was married to George Palmer Putnam and says Palmer C. age 29 then was indeed her son. George Palmer Putnam started the Putnam Publishing Company. So, I looked back to see if I had anything on him in that 1930 census. BINGO! I did a heck of a lot then. Here is what I put down 20 years ago:

EMILY J. PUTNAM  Manhattan 14, New York County (1930 Census)
She is 64 NY and widowed. She is Emily Jane Smith who has been married to George Haven Putnam the publisher. She has her son Palmer Cosslett Putnam 29 NY NY NY and her sister Alice Smith 71 NY and still single. There is also a maid, a cook and a waitress living here on Sutton Place South in a brick building worth $71,000. Be worth many millions today as Sutton Place is as special a street as any in NYC. Here is some interesting stuff on Palmer: “  PALMER COSSLETT PUTNAM was an American consulting engineer and wind power pioneer. Putnam graduated from MIT in 1924 as a geologist after serving in the RAF during World War I. He is known as the designer of the Smith-Putnam wind turbine installed in 1941 in Vermont, the first megawatt-scale wind turbine project. Putnam wrote on the subject of wind power including "Power from the Wind" published in 1948, with an introduction by Vannevar Bush, describing the Smith-Putnam project.  His book "Energy in the Future", 1953, was reviewed in the journal "Science". Putnam served as the president of G. P. Putnam's Sons publishing company from the time of his father's death until 1932. During the Second World War he worked on military projects including the DUKW amphibious vehicle.” He married Elizabeth Henley. Here is some stuff from her obituary when she died in Hood River, Oregon. “Elizabeth (Liz/Betty) H. Putnam passed away on Dec. 11, 2011, at her home in Hood River. She was born in Ukiah, Calif., Sept. 26, 1916, to Bessie H. and Edward V. Henley. She lived in San Leandro, Calif., Campbell, Calif., and graduated from San Jose High School. She attended San Jose State College (now University) but World War II intervened in her life. She enlisted in the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC) which became Women's Army Corp (WAC) during the war. She became a 2nd lieutenant and was involved in recruiting in the beginning and then was trained to rehabilitate the returning wounded soldiers. She in more recent years found that she had been a physical therapist although the name wasn't used. After the war, she finished her degree in physical education at San Jose State on the G.I. Bill. Having not been allowed to go overseas as a WAC, she joined a civilian recreational group who ran overseas recreational facilities and activities for the soldiers still deployed. She spent her time in Bremen, Germany. When she came home from this activity, she went to UCLA in Los Angeles where she completed her master's degree in physical education with a recreation emphasis and training for those with special physical needs P.E. Liz taught in a number of Los Angeles County High schools and at 95 still had her "girls" of her Drill Team as an active part of her life. One mentioned that Liz had come into their lives when they were 13 and had been a huge influence on their becoming independent women. She taught in very culturally mixed neighborhoods and had great respect for all her students of any socio-economic or cultural background. In 1962, she married Palmer Putnam, a talented engineer whose team developed the vehicle which became the snowcat and also the "duck." His first big project was a wind machine in Vermont in the late 1930s. Later he was honored by those building the wind machines even here in this area. He designed their trimaran boat. Palmer died November 28, 1984 in Atascadero where they had lived for many years after she retired from teaching.”
