UPDATED OCTOBER 6, 2023

MICHIGAN 1820-29 TERRITORIAL CENSUS

The early Territorial Census reports simply list the heads of households with no listing of the number of folks in the families.

Listed in 1820:

ALPHEUS PUTNAM  Michigan Territory

He is from Charlestown, New Hampshire. His wife is Saropta Dudley. He was born August 29, 1795. He'll be here through 1870, and will die in Ogallak, Kansas June 9, 1875. He is number 1172 in Eben's book, a son of Samuel Putnam and Ruth Spencer from New Hampshire, and a grandson of Timothy Putnam and Ruth Badger. This line goes Alpheus > Samuel > Timothy > Seth > Thomas > Thomas > John.

Listed in 1825:

AARON PUTNAM  Michigan County

He is Arent (Dutch spelling) or Aaron Derrick Putman from Albany County New York. See 1830. Dutch family. His line goes back though Derick to Lodowyck to Arent to Johannes the first guy of the Dutch line to come to America.

AARON PUTNAM  Michigan Territory

Probably the same guy, moving around. Not a lot of folks here at this time.

HIRAM PUTNAM  Huron, Wayne & Washtenaw Counties

He is number 1191, a son of Bailey Putnam (number 470) and Anna Bailey of Charlestown, New Hampshire. Hiram was born March 27, 1798. He is either alone here or possibly with his first wife whose name I do not know. His folks are here too. His dad will die here September 17, 1827 and his mom will be with him till she dies in April 1850. He will marry Laura Emeline Rice here October 9, 1836, and by that time had a bunch of children by a first wife. This line goes back Hiram > Bailey > Timothy > Seth > Thomas > Thomas > John Putnam.

JOSHUA PUTNAM  Detroit, Wayne & Washtenaw Counties

Joshua was a son of Seth Putnam and Sarah Hardin of Putnam, Ontario. He was first married to a gal whose name is not known (had a son George). He then married Melinda Flanagan in 1821. She died September 11, 1827, and he then married Mary Barrows on March 29, 1828. Joshua died September 19, 1859 back in Canada I believe. The line is Joshua > Seth > Thomas > Seth > Thomas > Thomas > John Putnam. Joshua is number 1142 in Eben’s books.

Listed in 1829

ALPHEUS PUTMAN  Michigan Territory

Been here and will be here a long time. See the first listing for his line.

MICHIGAN 1830-39 TERRITORIAL CENSUS

In the 1830 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10-14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc. The same will be true in 1840. From 1850 on ages and states of birth are shown.

Listed in 1830

AUIR (ARENT) PUTNAM  Dexter, Washtenaw County

Listing is 000011  00000001. This is Arent or Aaron Derrick Putman, son of Derrick or Richard Putman and Nelly Van Brocklin from Stone Arabia, Albany County and then Montgomery County New York. Dutch family. He and Alida Wilson his wife are here for a while. He will die here in 1837. This is the township they lived in, so has to be him. His line is Arent > Derrick > Lodowyck (Lewis) > Arent > Johannes Putman.

HARRISON PUTNAM  Michigan Territory

Probably a New England guy, but I have no clue as to who he is. He too is gone in a year or so to new parts.

HIRAM C. PUTNAM  Michigan Territory

He has been here a bit now. See earlier 1825 listing for who he is. He is from New Hampshire.

IRA H. PUTMAN  LaGrange Township, Cass County

Listed as Ivy H. He is a son of Uzziel Putnam Jr. and was born in Wardsboro, Windham County Vermont October 28, 1798. In 1840 he will be in Jefferson Township of Cass County. Listing is 210011  000001. His brother Uzziel (3rd) is listed shortly, see that listing for his lineage. He married Mary ’Polly’ Gavit in Sandusky County Ohio September 11, 1823, or possibly she was Mary Markham who married Benjamin F. Gavit. Polly married Benjamin in 1815 and filed for divorce in 1823. She got the Court to grant it and nine months later she married Ira. He died in 1848, and his wife Polly is listed then with the kids, except for Ira J. their eldest.

UZZIEL PUTNAM  Pokagon Township, Cass County

Listed as Huzziel. He is Uzziel 3rd from Vermont. His line is Uzziel 753> Uzziel 279> Amos 107> John 20> Nathaniel 5> John Putnam. Uzziel Junior was from New Salem, Massachusetts and was number 753 in Eben's books, then Eben got really confused and skipped a generation and mixed it all up, so Uzziel 3rd and on down don't have Eben Putnam numbers. Listing is 100001  010001. Now as to this Uzziel, he was born January 19, 1792 in Wardsboro, Windham County Vermont. He married Ann Chapman September 12, 1822 in Sandusky County Ohio. Another account states it was Anna Gordon and they were married November 11, 1823. He may well have had two wives named Ann, very common name those days. His folks had come from Jefferson County New York to Huron County Ohio and he joined them there, and moved to Cass County here in Michigan about 1825. He was the first white settler in the County.

Listed in 1831

O. D.  (ORLANDO DAVID) PUTNAM  Michigan Territory

He should be Orlando David Putnam, the son of Cornelius Putnam and Ruth Davis who was born between 1805-1810 in Lewis County, New York. Eben didn't have much on Orlando except that he settled in Michigan and supposedly died around 1860 or so. Eben only had his name as Orlando. When Orlando married Mary Ann Cilley on 1 August 1831 in Monroe County, Michigan he used his middle name David. The Cilley family History however only listed him with his first name Orlando. Combine them and you get his full name and this is him (initials only) living in Michigan. This is Orlando David's only census appearances that we know of. There is an O.D. Putnam who pops up in Will County Illinois in 1834 who may be Orlando David or could be someone else entirely. Orlando David and Mary Ann will have one child, a son named Erastus, who will be here in 1850. Not long after Erastus was born Orlando David died or R-U-N-O-F-F and is never seen again. His line is Orlando David > Cornelius > Cornelius > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John. New England family.

BENJAMIN F. PUTNAM  Cass County, Michigan Territory

This is Benjamin Franklin Putnam born July 2, 1806 in Oneida, New York. He is the brother of Orlean Putnam, also listed here in Cass County. He will be in the Michigan census in 1835, 1840 and 1850. I cannot find him in 1860 but he shows up in the 1870 census in Burritt, Illinois. He will die on October 25, 1877 in Owen Center, Illinois.

ORLEAN PUTNAM  Cass County

This is Orlan or Orlean Putnam, son of Uzziel Putnam Jr. He was born May 7, 1808 in Adams, Jefferson County New York. He will marry Amelia Vanderhoof here on April 15, 1834. He will be here until he dies in 1888.

Listed in 1834

IRA H. PUTMAN  LaGrange Township, Cass County

He and Polly are still here, and he’s still listed as Ivy H.

AUIR PUTNAM  Dexter, Washtenaw County

This is Arent or Aaron Putman and Alida Wilson from New York. See earlier listing.

UZZIEL PUTNAM  Michigan Territory

This would be Uzziel 3rd in Cass County.

He is Uzziel 3rd, a dual listing of the above.

SILAS PUTNAM  Hillsdale County

He is the son of Robert Putnam (1672) and Susannah Horton of Chester, Windsor County Vermont. He was born there June 8, 1799. He married Martha Jordan of Chester October 1, 1823. They will be in Lenawee County in 1840, and Martha will be widowed there in 1850.

Listed in 1835

His line goes Aaron > Cornelius (339) > Cornelius (127) > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John. They were in Orleans County NY in 1830.

JOHN P. PUTNAM  Pokagon Township, Cass County

He is a son of Uzziel Putnam Jr. and a brother of Uzziel who is here in the county now. The current listing is 00000011  00000001. Both he and his wife Wealthy are in their 50s now. They will show up in 1850, but only he will be here in 1860 at age 71 VT living with a Woods family that must be kin of sorts.

UZZIEL PUTNAM  Pokagon Township, Cass County

Dad who has been here a while now. He is actually Uzziel 3rd, as his Dad Uzziel died back in Ohio. Current listing is 0010201  010101. He is in his 40s, his wife in her 30s. His wife is Ann Gordon.

He was born in Ovid, Seneca County New York and came here a few years ago. As he was the first settler, he named the town for his old hometown. His father was John Jacob Putman and Leanah Weaver, listed there in 1820. Dutch line from New York and then New Jersey.

DANIEL PUTNAM  Fayette Township, Hillsdale County

He is Daniel Baldwin Putnam. He is another son of Uzziel Putnam of Wardsboro, Vermont. The listing is 10001001  1121. This shows him as in his 40s and indicates he was widowed. His first wife Mary Louise Ensign had died April 5, 1840. But he will marry Sarah Curren and she will be listed in 1850. Daniel has just come up from Huron County Ohio where Uzziel his dad had died a while back. He will be here in 1850 and then hike out to Iowa with his son Nahum Dan and be there the rest of his life.

JOSEPH PUTNAM  Stockbridge, Ingham County

He is listed as 000001  20001, with he in his 30s and Sarah Lowe in her 20s. They will be in Jackson County in 1850. Then, I feel the next Joseph in Jackson County is the same guy. The ages and kids tie in the same. They may be different, but at least one of them is in Jackson County in 1850. He is number 1193 or 1193A, a son of Bailey Putnam (470) and Anna Bailey and was born in Charlestown, Sullivan County New Hampshire on August 14, 1808. The family moved to Vermont and then New York. JOHN PUTMAN  Grass Lake, Jackson County

He is from New Jersey and will be here in 1850 through 1880. Current listing is 010001  01001. Both he and Emily Johnson are in their 30s. He is a son of Henry Putman and Sarah Dunn from Sussex County New Jersey, and then Seneca County New York. He is part of the Dutch line. David Putman went to New Jersey and that branch was there through the Revolution.

SILAS PUTMAN  Madison, Lenawee County

A. PUTNAM  Springfield, Oakland County

Maybe Aaron's son? The listing is 0010001 0001000001. He is in his 40s and seems to be widowed with a woman in her 70s living with him. She is probably his mother.

He is a son of Franz 'Francis' Putman and Maria Fonda and grandson of Cornelius Victor Putman. Current listing is 1012001  0111101. Both he and Maria are in their 40s. He will be here widowed in 1850.

CORNELIUS PUTNAM  Woodhull, Shiawassee County

He is Johannes Putman and Elizabeth Vedder's son from Amsterdam, Montgomery County New York. He is Dutch. The listing is 032001  000001. He is in his 30s as is Elizabeth Ann Johnson his wife. His line goes back to Johannes to Louis to Cornelius to Johannes Putman the first, and seems only, Dutch Putman to arrive in America.

BENJAMIN PUTNAM  None listed, Washtenaw County

He is listed 00001  10001. Both he and his wife are in their 20s. They will be in Ingham County in 1850. He is from Massachusetts. He just married Olive Price here on November 5, 1837.

G. W. PUTNAM  Salem, Washtenaw County

He is listed 01011  11001, with both he and his wife Melinda Hosmer in their 20s. He is George Washington Putnam who we feel is a son of Reuben Putnam and Muhulda Cummings from New Hampshire. There are two other kids of Reuben and Hulda here in Michigan now. Someone found that he died in 1845 and Melinda wasn’t around then either.

J. W. (JOHN WILSON) PUTMAN  Ypsilanti, Washtenaw County

He is John Wilson Putman, son of Aaron and Alida Putman. He is married to Sally Ann Jones. The listing is 0101413  210104.  Ah ha! Much more than just one family bunched up here. The older guys are in their 40s and the older gals in their 30s and plenty of kids to go all around. He'll next be in Shiawassee County and has been here since the mid 1830s. He and his brother Simeon were in Genesee County New York in 1830. Dutch folks. God knows who else is with them, and they are not together in 1850 so I have no clues.

GEORGE PUTNAM (ROTNOUR) Canton, Wayne County

He is listed 20000020001  0021101. He is really a Rotnour and not a Putnam. He and lots of other Rotnours will be here in 1850. Only leaving him in as he was indexed as a Putnam. He is probably one of the two guys in his 40s as is the eldest female. Then there is another guy, probably a brother, in his 40s and another older guy in his 80s who must be daddy, Michael Rotnour who was here in 1830.

NORMAN PUTNAM  Nankon, Wayne County

He is listed 000001  000001. He and Hannah are both in their 30s. He is a son of Peter Putnam (1080) and Susannah Osgood. His dad Peter was born in Danvers, Mass. January 15, 1758, a son of Peter Putnam (421) and Lydia Endicott. The family was from Massachusetts then Vermont then New York. Norman was born in Bethany October 1, 1803 and then the family was in Genesee County New York after that. They were in Wyoming County New York in 1830 and are back there by 1850. Didn’t like it out here I guess. Then his wife Hannah died and by 1860 he is by himself in St. Croix County Wisconsin. He is a saddle maker.

MICHIGAN 1850 CENSUS

Finally in 1850, we get all the names, ages, and states these folks were born in. Again, I am listing by county and town to make it easier to see if people connect.

CHARITY PUTNAM  Woodland Township, Barry County
Charity is listed as 60 NY. Matt Putnam came up with this:  Charity is living with George and Nancy (Putman) Demond. Nancy is the daughter of Thomas Putman and Abigail Grover of Wayne County, New York. Charity is related but I don't know how. Charity must be either an unmarried daughter of the mysterious John and Mary Putman, or she is a widow of a yet unidentified son of John and Mary. Then I looked up on Family Search and found a sorta tree that says she is a daughter of David and Rebecca Putman and was christened in Johnstown, Montgomery County New York November 18, 1787. Here is that family in the 1790 NY Census that I have:
DAVID PUTMAN  Caughnawaga Township, Montgomery County

Listing is 1-1-3. David was born in Fort Hunter, Albany County in about 1760. He married Rebecca Davis in Massachusetts. His line is David > Johannes > Cornelius > Jan. He will die while digging a well in about 1792 (will administered March 20, 1793). Rebecca and the kids will be in Lee, Berkshire County Mass. in the 1800 and 1810 census reports.

He is a son of Lewis Putnam (1722) and Nancy Wilson, and grandson of Asa Putnam (718) and Anna Collins of Brattleboro, Vermont. Perley was born in Brutus, Cayuga County New York on February 7, 1806. He married Margaret there February 7, 1832, kinda a birthday present to himself. He’ll be here in Michigan till he dies March 18, 1875.

LEWIS PUTNAM  Union Township, Branch County

Lewis is listed as 31 NY (VT in 1860).  His wife, Harriet Perkins, is 31 NY.  The children are: Isabel 9 MI, Wiley B. 7 MI, Ellen 5 MI, and Alice 1 MI.  Also in the household is his mother (actually his wife’s mom Huldah (Payne Perkins), 58 NY. Got a bunch of clues here, but I can't figure him out. From a family group sheet, we find out Isabel married a Butcher, Wiley is Wiley Bancroft Putnam who married Julia Ann Stearn, Ellen married a Chatfield, and Alice was just Alice. They all stay here in Branch County. But, still I don't know from whom Lewis is descended.

His line is Jacob > Frederick > Frederick > Lodowyk > Arent > Jan.

ORLIN PUTMAN  Clarendon Township, Calhoun County

Orlin is listed as 35 NH.  His wife, Caroline Brown is 34 NY.  The children are: Lorianna 10 MI, Charles 8 MI, Francis 6 MI, Fanny A. 4 MI, George 2 MI, and Henry (?) 1 MI. He is Cornelius and Bridget's son.

CORNELIUS PUTMAN  Clarendon Township, Calhoun County

Cornelius is listed as 64 NH. His wife, Briget Nevins, is 58 NH. The only child at home is: William 14 NY. Corney will be dying soon on January 5, 1851, and I don't know where Bridget and their son went after that. Gave his line back in 1840. Now as to William. Probably too young to be Corney’s, but if you look back in the 1840 you’ll see several females in their teens and down, and William listed as under 5. They might belong to Corney, or to one of his sons. Just don’t know.

JONAH (JONAS) PUTMAN (OUTMAN)  Athens, Calhoun County

Jonas is listed as 56 NY.  His wife, Brenda, is 47 VT.  The children at home are: Ovina (Olivia?) 30 NY, Albert 28 NY, William 13 OH, David 11 OH, Ruba (Rhoda) 9 OH, George 7 OH, John 5 OH, and Asaph 3 OH. Eben said he lived in Athens, Michigan and then in Mendon, Michigan. In 1860 he lives next door to Peter jr. who was also a son of Peter Putnam Sr. They are Peter Putnam and Susannah Keep's sons from St. Johnsbury, Vermont.

They will move to Vermilion County Illinois where they will be in 1860.

Listed as Putman, he is Ira Junior 23 MI, his wife Rosanna Longnecker is 21 PA and they have Elizabeth 5/12 MI. They are living with her mother Rosanna Longnecker 62 PA. He is a son of Ira Putnam and Polly Markham from Vermont and was here in Jefferson Township with his folks in 1840. He married Rosanna here July 4, 1848. His dad died August 28, 1848 and his widowed mom isstill in Jefferson Township and lised next.

Also there are George Barker 9 MI and Benjamin Davis 25 NY as boarders. Next door are William Bates 25 NY and Charlotte Bates 25 NY. Got a feeling Charlotte may be kinfolk.

JOHN PUTMAN  Pokagon Township, Cass County

His line is Richard > Gilbert > Derrick (Richard) > Lodowyck (Lewis) > Arent J. > Jan.

GERTRUDE PUTNAM  Ingham, Ingham County

Gertrude is listed as 12 MI and boarding. Looks like a dual listing for the daughter of Joseph Putnam and Sarah Lowe. They were here in Ingham County in 1840, and are currently in Jackson County. Gertrude is listed there as well, if this is the same gal. Looks to be.

BENJAMIN PUTNAM  Wheatfield Township, Ingham County

Benjamin is listed as 40 MA.  His wife, Olive Price, is 30 NY.  The children are: Nancy 10 MI, Lucinda 8 MI, Sarah 6 MI, and Mary 4 MI. He is a son of Abner Putnam and Nancy Stearns of Hamden County Massachusetts. See his listing in 1860 for the whole line. I found a death certificate for their daughter Nancy Ann. She was here August 17, 1839 and died in Butler, Branch County January 4, 1920 at age 80. She had married Peter Bergin, but was widowed when she died.

This family will be one in Washtenaw County in 1860, but the names are a bit screwed up then. At any rate, he was born in Charlestown, Sullivan County New Hampshire. He is a son of Bailey Putnam (470) and Anna Bailey.

ALBERT F. (T.) PUTNAM  Henrietta, Jackson County

Albert is listed as 27 MA (NY in 1860, MA in 1870). He will marry Sarah Chapman here on June 20, 1852 and they will be here in 1860 and 1870, and longer. Handwriting was tricky on these old reports. Rand and I think the middle initial is a T, and that this guy is Timothy Albert Putnam a son of Charles Putnam (1506) born in Worcester, Mass. His dad died in 1840, and Albert and his Andrew brother headed west. Andrew is in Nevada now.

EDWIN PUTNAM  Spring Arbor, Jackson County

Edwin is listed as 12 NY with Edwin Hathaway 30 NY. His sister is listed next boarding or staying with a Bean family. He will marry Juliette Lawrence in 1878, and then be in Whiteside County Illinois in 1880, then to South Dakota and then will be in Stockton, Cedar County Missouri for the 1900 census. A Michigan County history states he was a son of Jerome Putnam from New York State. That Jerome was married to Martha Skinner and was in Batavia, New York. Jerome was part of the ‘other’ New England family out of Hartford, Connecticut. But…. If you look up Jeremy Putnam (number 1174) in Eben’s book, you’ll see he went from VT to NY then to MI where he died. No name for the wife, but he had kids named Edwin, Eliza, Elizabeth, Spencer and some other ones and they lived in Jackson County according to the book. So… I think the Jerome mentioned in the history was really Jeremy, the kids Edwin (number 2632), Eliza (# 2627), Elizabeth (2628) and Spencer (2630) are all right here. The Sarah Lane Putnam mentioned in the next listing should be their mother and Jeremy’s widow. Just a guess, but it all fits. Jeremy’s line goes back through Samuel > Timothy etc and he was a brother of Alpheus who was in Jackson County in 1840. Alpheus had a couple of ‘spare’ kids then that were NOT his. Probably Jeremy’s. As no names were used in 1840, the other kids and the mom Sarah were probably living with other families. Eliza (2627) will marry Peter Deering November 28, 1853 here in Jackson County and Elizabeth (2628) will marry John W. Ward in Calhoun County on September 4, 1853.

ELIZABETH (ELIZA) PUTNAM  Spring Arbor, Jackson County

Eliza is listed as 15 NY. She is listed with St. Clair and Rebecca Bean from New Hampshire and their family and two other kids. In 1860, Eliza will be married to Peter Dearing, and a Sarah Putnam then 48 NY and her mom will be there. Sarah and Eliza will be here in Jackson County in 1870. This would be Jeremy’s family. I finally get confirmation. There is a death certificate of Elizah Putnam Deering daughter of Jeremy Putnam and Sarah Lane. She was born May 17, 1834 and died in Washtenaw County February 3, 1902. Perfect!

You’ll notice Maria was born in 1840, so there was a first wife that I have no info on. Martha will die in a few years, and Eri will go to Kent County. He married Eliza Goodrich in Grand Rapids, Kent County on December 3, 1857. They are there in the 1860. He will then head off to Iowa in about 1866, bop up to Nebraska about 1871 and return to Soldier, Monona County Iowa where he will die August 26, 1896. He is 39 NY, Helen Barker 26 NY and Eugene 10 OH. In 1850, he was in Summit County Ohio and at the time his wife was Emily Barker who has died in 1854. He is related to the George here in the county who was also in Summit County Ohio in 1850. He is probably also related to Joseph Putnam in Branch County. Anyway, Lyman is a son of Franklin Putnam and Phoebe Burroughs, and was born in Genesee County New York. He will die in the Civil War on June 24, 1863. He is 38 NY and has a son Charles 2 MI. They live with several other people in a boarding house but they are not related. He is the son of Stephen Putnam and Lucy Fancher who are living nearby in Clarendon. Alfred married a woman named Catherine who's last name was either Austin or Labordeau (maybe Laborders). This family is hard to trace as Alfred and Catherine's marriage record has not been found and they were missing in the 1850 census. Catherine appears to have died recently as the youngest Charles is just two years old. The two older sons Stephen Jerome and Alonzo Alfred are living with their grandparents in Clarendon. This is the only census appeared for Alfred as he will die here in 1868. His line is Alfred > Stephen > Aaron > Cornelius > Cornelius > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John. New England family.

ARZA (AZRA) PUTMAN  Burlington Township, Calhoun County

Pullman is 42 NY and a farmer, Jane 33 NY, twins Albert and Adelbert 12 NY, Lucinda 10 NY, William 9 NY, Charles 8 NY, Emmett 5 NY, Frank 3 MI and a baby girl 1/12 MI. They were in Palmyra, Wayne County, New York in 1850 before they moved out here to Michigan. Arza Pullman and family are here again in 1870 and their names are correctly listed as Pullmans. So this family is not one of ours at all. Leaving them here so that you don't get confused.

GEORGE PUTNAM  Leroy, Calhoun County

He is 26 OH, Elizabeth 22 OH and they have an unnamed daughter 3/12 MI. I guess he is number 2869, and a brother of the Peter Putnam listed earlier in Athens, Calhoun County. Rand Putnam dug up some interesting Cemetery Inscriptions in Leroy. Elizabeth’s stone reads she was the wife of G. C. Putnam (his stone reads he died in 1862), and the late wife of P. S. Putnam, and that she died in 1899. Now, look ahead to the listing here in Leroy for Peter Putnam in the 1870. Looks like he married Elizabeth after George died. The young daughter listed here is named Emma then. This Peter is the one listed presently in Athens. He is NOT a son of Peter junior, but more likely a nephew.

I assume Jonathan is by a prior 'mother' as Marilla is just too young. A descendant says that John was indeed married to an Eliza first. Jonathan and David above were born in the first marriage. Best guess is that John is a son of David Putman and Dorothy Hainer from Ontario and then New York State before that. Dutch family.

NATHAN PUTNAM  Milan Township, Monroe County

He is listed as 28 MI, a tanner and living by himself. There just weren’t any other Nathans around, so this has to be a dual listing for John’s son and the age is 18 not 28. He’ll be married here by 1870.

In 1850 the only child listed was Eleanor who would be 32 now, so I do not know how the above Elizabeth fits in. I understand Elizabeth is a daughter born in 1847, but she didn’t appear with the family in 1850. At any rate, Laban is a son of Reuben and Eleanor Putnam of Bethel, Vermont. Laban is number 2673 in Eben's book. They were in Palatine, Cook County Illinois in 1850 and will return shortly and just the two of them will be in 1870.

They will be in Allegan County by 1870 and in Berrien County in 1880. Pretty sure he is a son of Archelaus Putnam (1903) and Martha Hawkins of Windsor County Vermont and the Allegheny County New York. WILLIAM C. PUTMAN  Wells, Tuscola County

He is 26 NY living with a Wright family from New York. Up till now William has been thought to be a son of John Putman and Sarah Martin from Wayne County New York, and grandson of Peter Putman and Sarah Kinnan from Sussex County New Jersey and the line was from Montgomery County New York before that. Dutch Pootman family. Now Mark Putnam, who is the ‘authority’ on the New York Dutch line, has gathered DNA research and feels that possibly this William C. is a son of John Putman and ‘Hosah’ Putman from Ontario Canada. The names John & Hosah come from his death certificate, but with handwriting what it was in the 1800s Hosah could Sarah, Hannah or maybe some other name. If so his middle name could be Cyrenius. This John was the son of Henry Putman and Hannah Anguish from Western New York to Bertie, Ontario. So just not sure. At any rate he was born in Wayne County New York and went with his folks over into Ontario. He came down into Michigan in the early 1850s and went to work in a logging camp in Wells, Tuscola County in 1856. He married Mary Chambers here July 3, 1860. In 1850 he spelled his name Putnam and said he was born in Vermont. Now he spells it Putman and born in New York. It’s NY in 1870 and 1880 and 1900 it’s back to VT. In 1880 and 1900 he lists that both his folks were also born in Vermont. He will die here May 7, 1912. In his death certificate he says his full name is William Nathan born in Vermont February 26, 1822 and his father was Nathaniel Putnam. Rand Putnam thinks that his dad may be the Nathaniel who was a son of Jonathan Putnam and Abigail Burton. The family was in Andover, Windsor County Vermont in 1820. That Nathaniel married Elizabeth Emily Case and was in Vernon Wisconsin in 1850.
