MISSISSIPPI

Census Returns

1820  -  1930

UPDATED MARCH 17, 2024

Georgia claimed a great portion of Mississippi in the late 1700s and many early settlers came from there. It became a Territory in 1798 and included most of what is now Alabama. In 1817, Mississippi became the 20th State, and Alabama was split off into a separate Territory. The first Federal Census was taken in 1820.

In the 1820 census males are broken down 0-9, 10-15, 16-18, 19-25, 26-44, 45 and older. Females are divided 0-9, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.

In the 1830 and 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.

From 1850 on ages and states of birth are shown. In 1880 places of birth are listed for the person, their father and their mother. In the 1880 Soundex only families with children under 10 are listed. In the 1900 and later Soundex, all families are listed.

MISSISSIPPI 1820 CENSUS

There were no Putmans or Putmans in the 1820 Index.

MISSISSIPPI 1830 CENSUS

In the 1830 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.

A. W. PUTNAM  Claiborne County

This is Albigence Waldo Putnam from Marietta, Ohio. His wife is Catherine Ann Sevier, they were married here April 14, 1825. She will die and he will marry her sister Cornelia Sevier November 6, 1834 and then go to Davidson County, Tennessee where they appear in 1840. The listing is 200001  00001. He descends from General Israel Putnam. This New England Line is Albigence > Aaron Waldo > Israel > Israel > Joseph > Thomas > John Putnam of Salem, Massachusetts.

JAMES PUTMAN  Copiah County

This is the James Putman who was a son of Daniel Putman and from Abbeville County, South Carolina. His wife is Elizabeth Johnson. Their listing is 01001 02010.

JEREMIAH PUTMAN  Copiah County

Jerry is James' son. He is recently married to Elizabeth Smith and they have two daughters. Listing is 00100 20100.

MISSISSIPPI 1840 CENSUS

In the 1840 census males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.

MISSISSIPPI 1850 CENSUS

E. R. (ELIAS ROBERTS) PUTMAN  Chickasaw County

Elias is a son of Willis Putman and Elizabeth Fannin from Cleveland County, North Carolina. He is 25 NC living with Charles and Lucretia Morgan both from South Carolina.

LORENZO D. PUTMAN  Chickasaw County

Lorenzo Dow Putman is Elias' brother and another of Willis' sons. He is 22 NC and living with Joseph and Selina Stevens.

ISAAC PUTMAN  Choctaw County

He is 21 SC living with Seaborn and Mary PUTMAN Garrett from South Carolina. Mary is a Putman, a daughter of William Putman and Mary Mitchell from Laurens County, South Carolina. Her sister Francis PUTMAN married Osborn Garrett and is also living in the area. His full name is William Isaac Putman, and is probably a son of James Putman and Elizabeth Hughes from South Carolina. Others of that family will be here shortly. James and Mary were siblings.

MELISSA PUTMAN  DeSoto County

She is 18 TN and living with William (42 NC) and Elizabeth (35 TN) Huddleston. According to the mortality schedule, it seems her brother was David G. Putnam born in Tennessee and died of Typhus. I don't know who he was. David had a brother, James W. Putman who was mayor of Hernando here in the 1840s. James died in 1843 at age 34, David October 20, 1849 at age 24. According to a descendant James was married to Eliza Patterson of Tennessee. See the listing in 1850 for Eliza in Marshall County, Tennessee.

OSCAR PUTNAM  Hinds County

He is 20 TN and is a son of Charles Caleb Putnam and Martha Murdock who are now in Smith County.

JOHN M. (MURDOCK) PUTNAM  Hinds County

John Murdock Putman 28 DC is another son of Charles Caleb Putnam. His wife Sophronia Lee Fearn is 20 AL and living with them is his brother JAMES RUSSELL PUTNAM 24 TN. Another son of Charles, SAMUEL PUTNAM 18 TN lives nearby. Sam will be with his brother Bruce in Vicksburg, Madison County in 1860, but will also be married in Warren County as well.

WILLIAM PUTNAM  Hinds County

He is 24 TN, but I do not have him listed as a son of Charles, so I am not certain who he is. If the age is 14 TN, then he would be Charles’ son, William Myatt. That William is with his folks, but might be visiting his kin over here in Hines County.

JOHN PUTMAN  Marshall County

He is listed as a physician 38 from Virginia. He is widowed with 2 small children, Catherine 9 and Warren 7 both born in Mississippi. The Melissa Putman in next door DeSoto County may be his daughter as well. It appears the next two guys, Andrew and William may be his brothers. The states they were born in follows the pattern of the Putman family from Virginia that went to Guilford County, North Carolina and then into Jefferson County, Tennessee.

ANDREW PUTMAN  Marshall County

He is 35 TN and a tailor. He lives with the next William who is possibly a brother.

WILLIAM PUTMAN  Marshall County

William is 26 or 36 NC. He too is a tailor. If these are brothers, it is confusing.

J. E. PUTMAN  Scott County

This is Jeremiah Putman 48 SC and his wife Elizabeth Smith 41 KY. The children, all born in Mississippi, were: Sarah Jane 19 MS, Miranda 16 MS, Cassa 15 MS, Martha A. 12 MS, William J. 10 MS, Andrew J. 8 MS, Albert B. 5 MS, Dudley N. 2 MS and Milton 1 MS.

CHARLES (CALEB) PUTMAN  Smith County

He is actually Caleb Putnam Jr. and a son of Caleb Putnam (Eben’s number 1904) and Hannah Russell from Newburyport, Massachusetts. He was born October 1, 1793. He was then in Washington D.C about 1816 and married Margaret Murdock there October 17, 1820. They moved to Tennessee in 1824 and were in Knox County Tennessee in the 1830 census, then to Granger County Tennessee  in 1840 and then here to Smith County. He is 51 MA, his wife Margaret Murdock 45 DC, Bruce 16 TN, Mynott (William Mynatt) 14 TN and Mary Conally 15 SC. Mary doesn't seem to be part of the family. Bruce will be in Vicksburg in 1860 with his brother Samuel who is in Hinds County now. Both Bruce and Sam will also be in Madison Parish Louisiana in 1860 as well. Sam is there in New Orleans in 1870 and Bruce is in Pointe Coupee Parish Louisiana in 1880. Not sure why he is listed as "Charles" here as his name is Caleb. Perhaps the census taker made a transcription error. Or perhaps Caleb went by Charles from time to time. In any case, this line is This line is Caleb > Caleb > Archelaus > Archelaus > Nathaniel > Benjamin > Nathaniel > John Putnam of Massachusetts.

MISSISSIPPI 1860 CENSUS

There are now several Putnams from New England. There were a great many Black families that I am not listing.

His is George Melville Putnam and is listed as 32 NH. His wife is Mary Ann Parker 32 Ireland and has daughters Laura 2 DC, and Elizabeth 1 DC. George is listed as a mail contractor. It is strange to find George and his family here in Mississippi. We can surmise that the U. S. government has sent him on a temporary assignment to troubleshoot some mail issues. He married Mary Ann Parker on June 6, 1856 in DC. He will die in Glen Falls, New York on July 15, 1864. He is the son of Elisha Durant Putnam and Nancy Melville. He was in Woodstock, VT in 1850.

LORENZO D. (DOW) PUTMAN  Calhoun County

He has moved from Chickasaw County and is now 29 NC and his wife is 15 AL. His wife's name is Kate or Katie. He is in Noxubee County in 1880 and she is listed as Kitty. Annie Knight is probably a sister of the James Putman who married Elizabeth Hughes. Anne was born about 1797. My guess is that he was a son of John Putman's first marriage. Caleb Putnam and family were in Knox County Tennessee in the 1830 census, then to Granger County Tennessee in 1840 and then to Smith County Mississippi in 1850. The census information is C. Putnam 70 MA Lawyer, Margaret Putnam 53 DC, J.R. Putnam 33 TN Merchant, Bettie B. Putnam 4 MS, Mino Putnam 24 TN Railroad Conductor, Horace Hall 27 CT Bookkeeper, W.J. Roberts 24 VA Teacher, C.A. George died, but Joseph will be here a while and then off to California. He became an orator on behalf of Abolition. He traveled all over the South.
