LEON PUTNAM  Omaha, Douglas County

He is 46 VT, his wife Bernice McKenna 36 VT and they have Glenwood 17 VT, Wesley 14 VT, Donald 2 NE and Arlene 1 NE. They had a son Norman in 1930 who would be 12 now, but has died I guess. Okay Leon is tricky. First time I see him (I think) is in 1910. He was 15 VT VT VT in Bridgeport, Connecticut with his father who was simply listed as Putnam 53 VT VT VT at the time. Then I see him right here in 1920. He is listed 25 VT VT VT and a son of Sam Waterman 47 IA and his wife Flora 41 VT VT VT. Okay, Flora is a daughter of Rollin Burton Putnam and Alice Eldred from Franklin County Vermont. She was at home there in 1880 and gone by 1900. Now come guesses. In 1900 there was a Leon Eldred the right age in Belvidere Corners, Franklin County. He was with relatives and may have been put down as an Eldred by the census guy. In fact he may have been a Putnam or perhaps an illegitimate son of Flora. Not sure at all. In 1930 though he is back in Franklin County Vermont and married to a cousin Bernice McKenney. The marriage record in Vermont Gives his name as Leon Warren Putnam age 25, father’s name Bert and mother Flora married to Beatrice Myrtle McKenney in Georgia, Franklin County Vermont January 13, 1922. Bernice is a cousin of sorts as her mother Myrtle was a daughter of Rollin Putnam from Franklin County. Rand Putnam found his draft card info. It says his full name is Leon Warren Putnam and was born April 19, 1895 in Belvidere, Vermont. He was living there in 1918 when he was drafted. I looked it up, and saw that he was employed by Warren Eldred in Belvidere Corners, Vermont. Aha thatճ the guy he was living with in 1900 in Belvidere Corners, Vermont. Then I found a whole bunch of family sheets stating he was born in Belvidere, Lamoille County and was a son of Rollin Burton Putman and Alice Eldred. Well he never ever showed up in any family census report with them. Rollinճ lasts kids were born in the 1880s. His daughter Flora, who I mentioned earlier, was born back in 1878 and would be about the right early age to have a kid at age 17 in 1895. She also wasnմ listed in any censuses in 1900 and neither was Leon. It was just tactful to have them hidden in the barn when the census guy came around. Also, you gotta realize Franklin County Vermont is on the Canadian border and in the real boondocks. About like Appalachia, only a few miles north of both the Carolinas and also Quebec, Canada and also probably the Arctic Circle   Jay Peek is great ski area there but English isnմ spoken a lot. Same with Newport up in Orange County. Been there and the road signs are in French. So ɉ. I think Burtճ daughter Flora played around with Warren Eldred or one of his kids, had Leon in the back seat of their Ford at the local drive-in movie and ԢlendedՊhim into the family. Flora got looked at kinda hard so she split with Leon, hitch hiked to Omaha and set up a new life. The Iowa death index shows he was born April 9, 1895 and died February 6, 1971 in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie County Iowa. So Leon was here in 1920, in Vermont early on and again in 1930 and then back here with his cousin for a while then to Iowa and then call it quits. Whew !! Makes it more interesting is the son listed here as Glenwood Putnam is Linwood Lawrence Putnam and is also now listed in Buffalo County as Lenard 17 VT in the juvenile detention center there. Linwood is buried as Leonard L. Putnam in Lincoln Nebraska. His birthdate of September 24, 1923 ties in with Linwood. He died October 2, 1990. Kevin who does research for findagrave.com, was big help on IDing Linwood or Leonard.
