OHIO

CENSUS REPORTS

1810 – 1850

================

UPDATED MARCH 17, 2021

The first large influx of Putnams in Ohio was the New England ‘Ohio Company’ led by Rufus Putnam. The first Federal Census for Ohio was taken in 1820, however there was an 1810 County census for Washington County. Prior to that, there were some tax lists that are available.

In the 1810 census both males and females are broken into 0-9, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.

In the 1820 census males are broken down 0-9, 10-15, 16-18, 19-25, 26-44, 45 and older. Females are divided 0-9, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.

In the 1830 and 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.

From 1850 on ages and states of birth are shown. In the 1880 census, places of birth are listed for the person, their father and their mother. In the 1880 Soundex only families with children ten and under are listed. In the 1900 and later Soundex reports, all families are listed.

Ohio was a major entry and jumping off place to the West after the Revolution. The bulk of the families came west from New England. In these reports I will list our 'Southern' folks first and then will list the others, doing the best I can to identify them. Good luck.

Eben Putnam did a huge amount of research on the New England line in the late 1800s and published books in 1908 and 1910. He used a number system that I will stick in. Then in 2004 and 2006 Rand Putnam and Matt Putnam went one better with 2 volumes that pretty much covered Eben’s first volume with much more info that has become available. They had numbering system as well. I’ll try and put both numbers in parenthesis with Eben first. So example Colonel Israel Putnam would be (241/201). If you are researching the lines you should own all 4 volumes. If not get the ‘latest’ ones from Rand who has copies left.

EARLY TAX LISTS

All land that was bought from the Federal Government was tax exempt for the first five years. Anyone appearing on these lists was there at least five years prior to that appearance. Virtually everyone on these early listings came from Massachusetts with General Rufus Putnam and the members of the Ohio Company. Rufus and Company arrived in Marietta, Ohio on April 7, 1788.

OHIO 1798 TAX LIST

BENJAMIN PUTMAN  Dayton Township, Hamilton County

He is the ONLY Putnam/Putman listed. That seems to indicate he was there by 1792 or 1793. I wonder if Benjamin is another son of Zachariah's son John. John was an elusive sort of guy and was hard to pin down, especially his children. But Benjamin was a common name in both the Southern and New England branches. Just don't know.

OHIO 1800 TAX LIST

ISRAEL PUTNAM  Adams Township, Washington County

They will be here until they both die in a flu epidemic in 1822. He on August 21 and she on September 21. His line is Aaron Waldo > Col. Israel > Gen. Israel > Joseph > Thomas > John. He served in the Army starting as a Captain in the Revolution and then was aide de camp to his father the Major General. He came out in 1788 and then returned to Pomfret to get his family. CHRISTOPHER PUTNAM  Marietta, Washington County

Couldn’t figure this guy, but Matt Putnam solved this one for us. He found a reference on the internet. Christopher was a black servant of General Israel Putnam. Israel ‘freed’ him and he went to Ohio with his son, Colonel Israel Putnam. I don’t find him later. He may have died or not been ‘counted’ because of his color. Interesting. I’ve spent eons trying to figure this guy out. Thanks, Matt!

DAVID PUTNAM  Marietta, Washington County

He is a son of Col. Israel Putnam (number 649/602). He was born in Pomfret, Connecticut February 24, 1769, and will die in Harmar, Washington County Ohio March 31, 1856. WILLIAM PUTNAM  Marietta, Washington County

Probably a duplicate of one of the following Williams. As far as I can determine there were only two William Putnams here in 1800. But, and a big but. There is a William in Gallia County in 1820 and 1830 (in his 60s in 1830) that I just do not know about. It may be him, whoever he is.

WILLIAM RUFUS PUTNAM  Marietta, Washington County

A son of General Rufus Putnam. Number 571. He is number 571 in Eben’s book. William was born in Brookfield, Worcester County Massachusetts on December 12, 1771. They returned, but because of Indian problems in Ohio, they remained in Western Pennsylvania for some two years before returning to Marietta in 1795. He died there in a fall October 10, 1807. OHIO 1810 CENSUS

Here and for a few census reports, I'll separate out the various families by where they came from and what country they originally came from. The New England and Southern folks are, of course, English in origins. The Dutch all came out of New York State, the Germans came originally from Maryland, but one branch moved to Pennsylvania, and another to Virginia prior to flocking to Ohio.

In the 1810 census both males and females are broken into 0-9, 10- 15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.

OHIO 1820 CENSUS

In the 1820 census males are broken down 0-9, 10-15, 16-18, 19-25, 26-44, 45 and older. Females are divided 0-9, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.

Again, I will break out the several groups of Putnams and Putmans.

THE SOUTHERN PUTMANS

The Southern Putmans and Putnams descend from Thomas Putnam who came from England to Gloucester County Virginia in 1647. Zachariah Putman, a son of Daniel Putman and Sarah Kendrick, went from Culpeper County Virginia to Mason County Kentucky in the 1790s after the Revolution and then into Ohio about 1816. Most are in Champaign County. You can get much more info by going to the Southern Putmans Section. Look at Zachariah in the Kentucky Section and the Southern Putmans in Ohio Section.

THOMAS PUTMAN  Jackson Township, Champaign County

Henry's son up from Monroe County Kentucky and his wife Nancy Grover. Thomas was born about 1790 in Culpeper County Virginia. He moved to Mason County Kentucky where he married another daughter of Jonathan Mason Grover, Nancy Grover, on September 10, 1810. He then moved to near Piqua, Miami County Ohio where he died in about 1827. His widow was in Clark County Ohio for the 1850 census and in Vermilion County Illinois for the 1870 census at which time she was 78 years of age. She died there on February 23, 1872. She had traveled with her son Zachariah and his family over into Illinois after Thomas died. Listing is 400010 10010.

WILLIAM PUTMAN  Jackson, Champaign County

Zachariah's eldest son and his wife Nancy Ann Harper. William Putman was born on October 16, 1797 in Mason County. He married in March 1816 a cousin, Nancy Ann Harper. Nancy Ann was born in Mason County Kentucky on October 13, 1797. She was a daughter of the Rev. William Harper and Anna Putman. They had eight children. In about 1816 he took his family west and settled in Champaign County Ohio until 1842 when he moved to Mount Sterling, Brown County Illinois where several other of Zachariah's children had gone. Nancy died on August 23, 1853. He later married Eliza Jane Kendrick in about 1854. He remained there until he died July 24, 1880 and Eliza died February 16, 1878. Listing is 000100 20100.

ZACHARIAH PUTMAN  Mad River, Champaign County

He is a son of Daniel Putman and Sarah Kendrick. He was born on December 9, 1775,and went from Culpeper County Virginia to Mason County Kentucky in the 1790s after the Revolution and then into Ohio about 1816. ALBERT PUTNAM  Black River Township, Huron County

Not completely certain who he is. Huron is way up north. They will be gone by 1830, as he will die in 1828. Listing is 000100 20100. He is not connected to the following Daniel. He recently married Rachel Allen. After he dies, Rachel will marry Stephen Kelsey. Now, Matt Putnam found a good genealogy that covers Rachel. When she married, she lived in Erie County Pennsylvania though she was born back in Oneida County New York. There were several Putnam families in Erie County at that time. Most of the kids are accounted for, except two sons of Abijah Putnam born in the same time frame in Oneida County. Albert could be one of those sons. Or possibly he is the son of Anthony Putnam and Rebecca Spooner. They were in Oneida County in the early 1800s and had a son named Albert A. Putnam born in the 1790s back in Vermont where they came from.

DANIEL PUTNAM  Oxford Township, Huron County

He will be here in 1830 as well. Listing is 100010  20100. Interesting story here. He married Louise Marie Ensign and he and his folks came to Sandusky, Huron County in 1811. His brother Orlean was captured by Indians in 1813 during the War of 1812, and were 'ransomed' back late in 1813. Uzziel is still here and listed shortly. Daniel will hang in here for a while and then about 1837 will go to Hillsdale County Michigan where his wife will die in 1841. He then married a widow, Sarah Margaret Curran and they will head west to Iowa to join a couple of their kids who were there. Dan will die in Nevada, Story County Iowa on February 17, 1880. Just thought you would be interested.

ISAAC PUTMAN  Island Creek Township, Jefferson County

He is a son of Isaac Putnam (628) and Polly Chamberlain from Windsor County Vermont where he was born in 1799. The listing is not available as the census taker left his line blank, the dummy. But, his wife is Mary Ann Brawley. They were married here March 18, 1817 (probably had a wild party the night before on St. Patrick's day, and decided to tie the knot the next morning). They are also listed in Ohio County Virginia now in 1820, and will be in Portage County Ohio in 1830 and in Columbiana County after that. Also, his dad Isaac has to be around here someplace, as he will die in Knox County Ohio in 1849. His brother Norman will be in Knox County too.

GABRIEL PUTMAN  Salt Creek Township, Stark County

He is a son of Andrew Putman, Junior from Pennsylvania. He and Susannah Weimer have just been married about a year and a half. The listing is 000100  101000. This is a different branch of the German Putman family. Gabe's folks were Andrew Putman 2nd and Anna Elizabeth Lenhart. This family came through Frederick County Maryland and up into Somerset County Pennsylvania. Andrew and Elizabeth remained in Pennsylvania, their children ventured out here to Ohio. Gabriel was born January 24, 1794 and will die here in Wilmot, Stark County November 22, 1882. He and Susannah were married in 1819 back in Pennsylvania. Gabriel came here in 1817 and then returned home to marry Susannah two years later and brought her out here. He founded the Wilmot Agricultural Works, with his cousins Daniel and Christian Wyandt.

THE I'M NOT SO SURE ABOUT PUTMANS

REUBEN PATMAN Rome, Athens County

JOHN PUTTMAN  Sunsbury, Monroe County

The listing is 300010 201001. He may be the guy in Ohio Township, Clermont County from 1830 to 1860. He is in his 30s now. But Matt Putnam found census record for 1830-1840-1850 for a John Pitman here in Sunsbury, so this guy is probably a Pitman.

REUBEN PUTTMAN  Springfield, Hamilton County

The listing is 011210 20010. This is in the corner near both Kentucky and Indiana. He next appears in 1840 in Fountain County Indiana. No ideas yet on who he is. Think he is from Vermont, but don’t know the connection yet.

JOHN PUTNAM  Sprigg Township, Athens County

He is listed 00011001  00110001. Not really sure about this guy. Wonder if he is John Putman from Kentucky, son of Zachariah and Margaret Putman from Culpeper County Virginia. Or he could be out of the Washington County gang from New England.

JACOB POTTMAN  Bridgeport, Belmont County

Listing is 00000001  1001001. Spelling being what it was then, I’m including this guy just in case. Belmont County is on the West Virginia (Virginia then) border. He’s in his late 50s, she in her 40s. They are not part of either German family from Pennsylvania and Maryland. If he is a Putman, he is probably Dutch.

ELIJAH PUTMAN  Mad River Township, Champaign County

Southern Putmans. He is Zachariah and Nancy Putman's son, now in his 30s, his wife Matilda Kenton is in her 20s. Listing is 100011 20001. Elijah Putman was born August 11, 1799. He married Matilda Kenton on June 24, 1830. He remained in Champaign County Ohio then moved to Brown County Illinois. He died in Brown County on March 24, 1875. A cousin of his, Ernestus Putman (see below in Darke County), had written home tolling the beauty of Virginia and this probably satisfied Isaac's wanderlust. Just when he headed for the Virginia Hills, Ohio was opening and both he and Ernestus headed west. I find a marriage record of him marrying Charlotte Spillman in Clarke County Ohio on January 11, 1819. Clark was formed from Champaign County in 1818 and so he was probably living in the area at the time.
