TENNESSEE 1920 CENSUS

 

GEORGE V. (VARNER) PUTMAN  Bledsoe County

Howard Mercer's son is 75 TN. He is living with his niece Leddie Childers White 33 TN and her husband Linn White 32 TN. Leddie is a daughter of his sister Mary and her husband James Childers, both who have died by now.

 

JOHN H. (HOWARD) PUTMAN  Bledsoe County

James' son is now 50 TN, his wife Vinnie Mae Blalock is 42 TN. His mom, Sarah Poe 68 TN is with them as well. He is an attorney.

 

ROSCOE GEORGE  PUTMAN  Bledsoe County

The son of James and Sarah Putman. He is 37. Sally E. Humphries his wife is 33, Mildred W. 12, Hazel C. 11, Jack H. 7, and Marvin S. 3. All are TN.

 

WINNIE SAMUEL PUTMAN  Bledsoe County

A son of James Putman and Sarah Poe. He is 35 TN, Gertrude L. Patten his wife is 28 TN, Mamie E. 8 months TN.

 

BILL A. PUTMAN  Chester County

Martin's son is still here at 69 TN and Jennie is 45 KY.

 

DANIEL T. PUTMAN  Coffee County

Wilson Jr.'s son is still here at age 77 AL. His son, John (see next listing) is here again with his family.

 

EMMA PUTNAM  Coffee County

Waldo's daughter is still here and still unmarried. She is 57 MS.

 

WILLIAM C. PUTMAN  Coffee County

A son of John C. and Elizabeth. I do not know where he's been since 1880, but he is back in Tennessee. His two spinster sisters that were with his dad are now with him. He is 54 TN, Mary Lou 63 TN and Virginia 49 TN.

 

JOHN MORGAN PUTMAN  Coffee County

David's son is 52 TN, Delia 46 TN, Emma 22 GA, Paul David 20 GA and John Buford 17 GA. She is widowed here in 1930 and all the kids are still here and all still single.

 

JOHN PUTMAN  Crockett County

He is 29 TN, has a daughter Virginia 7 TN. He is listed as a son in law of D. A. Walker. He is the son of Henderson G. Putman from Dyer County. He married Mary Walker on March 14, 1911 and she died in 1918. He will soon marry Minnie Williamson here in 1924 and much later will marry Mildred Dodson here in 1947.

 

ADRIAN PUTNAM  Davidson County

He is 43 IA and listed in the Nashville Welfare Center as a nurse. Also listed with him is his wife Bertha Phillips 40 MO, Dale 11 TX, Lucille 8 NE. He is a son of James Rufus Putnam, and was born in Marion County Iowa and was at home in Pottawattamie County Iowa in 1900. New England stock here. They are here in 1930 when he will be Director of a rural educational farm.

 

ANDREW PUTMAN  Davidson County

He is a son of John Putman and Mary Rummage from Williamson County. He is 36 TN, Damsey 28, Leroy 9, Ernest 6, Evelyn 4 and Leonard 2. All born TN. They are here in 1930. His brother Charles is listed shortly.

 

CHARLES D. PUTMAN  Davidson County

He is in Nashville now, and was in Dyer County in 1880. He is a son of John Putman and his first wife Nancy Vaughn from Williamson County. He is 46 TN, Lillie French 36 TN. At home are two daughters Ethel 21 and Bertine or Bernice 14. Ethel has married Elvis Lane 21 and they have a son Elvis Junior 2.

 

JAMES H. PUTMAN  Davidson County

Still in Nashville. John's son is 53, Mattie (Martha Lunn) 53, Carol 23, Clifford 21. Martha's Dad, John A. Lunn 81 is with them. Everyone is born in TN. John Lunn will die in the Soldier’s Home in Nashville in 1926. His obituary indicates James and Mattie were then living in Plant City, Florida. James and Mattie moved to Orlando where he died in 1946. They will be there in 1930.

 

JOHN M. PUTNAM  Davidson County

In Nashville now, but I don't find in 1910. He was in Dickson County in 1900 by himself. Now he is 40 TN, May Ella Oakley 36 TN, Woodrow Jabel 15 TN, Hortense D. 13 TN and Viola Belle 10 TN. They are here in 1930, Woodrow is married and same I guess with the daughters. He is a son of David Vance Putnam.

 

LEON S. PUTNAM  Davidson County

Another of James H. and Martha's young 'ens. He is 26 TN, Vera J. King is 23 TN. Her mom, Anna King 62 VA and an aunt, Laura Hamlett 63 VA.

 

LON PUTMAN  Davidson County

Alonzo is the son of David Vance and Mary Putman. He was born in Rutherford County. The last time I found him was in 1880. He did go to Illinois and married Mamie Braswell there in the early 1890s, had a son there in 1894 and then had disappeared by 1900. I can't find him anywhere in 1900 but they were here in 1910. At any rate he is 53 TN, Nettie Meadows is 36 TN. The kids are Lon (Alonzo Jr.) 13 TN, Leroy 7 TN, John Matt 5 TN, George 3 TN and David Vance just born. He will die here in September 1929. Nettie will go up to Detroit with one of the kids and die there in December 1952.

 

ROBERT E. L. PUTMAN  Davidson County

John and Mary's son from Williamson County. He is 28, Rosie Lee Shaw. 19, Buford 2 and Leana 2 months.

 

WILLIAM E. (ELLISTON) PUTMAN  Davidson County

He is a son of John and Mary from Williamson County. He now lives near Nashville. He is 29 TN, Lorena M. Henderson 25 TN, Melvin Lee 8 TN and Mary Louise 4 TN.

 

MATTIE PUTMAN  Dickson County

Mattie Johnson is the widow of David Vance Putman. She is 49 TN, Samuel 26, Ruth E. 20 and Minnie D. 18. Only Sam is around in 1930.

 

JAMES H. (HENDERSON) PUTMAN  Dyer County

Henderson G.'s son is 37 TN, Minnie Belle Smith 29 TN, James 3 and Pauline 1. James Henderson married Minnie Belle Smith here December 25, 1910. They will soon move to Orlando, Florida.

 

WILLIAM L. PUTMAN  Dyer County

A son of Henderson Griggs Putman. He is 31, Callie M. Kee his wife 31 and Estelle M. 8 all born TN. He married Callie Kee September 12, 1909 in Dyer County. They are here in 1930.

 

ROBERT LEE PUTMAN  Franklin County

A son of Jessie and Amanda Putman from Alabama. He was here in 1900 and back in Alabama in 1910. He is 43 TN, his second wife Clara or Clate is 28 AL, Ozell 21 TN, Herman Claude 19 TN, Ernest 17 AL, Diane 16 TN, Stella 10 AL, Judson 9 AL and Grace E. 5 Al. He manages a sawmill here. They are back in Jackson County Alabama in 1930 and he is in a Federal Prison in 1940 in Georgia.

 

JAMES M. (MADISON) PUTMAN  Giles County

Mile's son is 34 AL, Mary Ethel Davis 34 TN, Ralph 13 TN, James 4 TN, and Katherine 2 TN. He is a son of Miles Richard Putman and Susan Jane Sledge from Lauderdale County Alabama. They were in Wayne County in 1910 and will be in Smith County in 1930. He is a Methodist Minister.

 

JESSIE F. (FREEMAN) PUTMAN  Giles County

Francis Marion's son is 39 TN, Dovie J. Perkins his wife 30 TN, James Robert 8 and Margaret L. 6. They are in Henderson County by 1930.

 

JOHN T. (THOMAS) PUTNAM Chattanooga, Hamilton County

He is 36 WI IL WI and boiler maker in boiler plant. His second wife Cordelia is 34 TN and she has a daughter from her first marriage Martha J. Stewart 17 TN TN TN.  He is a son of Thomas Edward Putnam and Lillian Cleveland and was born May 12, 1883 in Winneconne, Winnebago County Wisconsin. His folks were there in 1880 and have moved to Alabama where his dad will die in Birmingham June 25, 1908. They were in Tennessee for a couple of years before 1900 at least. He and Cordelia are here in 1930. Martha is married and divorced by then too.

 

WILLIAM HARRISON PUTMAN  Chattanooga, Hamilton County

Lives in Chattanooga. He is a son of John F. and Martha Lain Putman from McNairy County. He is 52 TN, Dina Clay 47 VA, Everett 25 TN, Elsie 23 TN, William H. Jr. 13 MS and Lilly Lee 8 MS. They were in Lee County Mississippi in the 1910 census. The son Everett Clay will die here June 26, 1923.

 

FRANK PUTMAN  Henderson County

Francis Marion is now 71 AL. He is with his daughter Euda 34 TN and her husband John Kennedy 39 TN. Euda has Frances 8, Nellie 5, Joe 3 and Ruth 1. Also here are John's dad Joe Kennedy 82 AL and Martha Kennedy 50 AL his sister. Frank's wife Matilda died here in 1913, and Frank will die here in 1926.

 

OTIS A. PUTNAM  Knox County

He was listed Otha in 1910, and is William C's son. He is 47, his wife Tennie or Tammie is 43, and they have Robert D. 26, Neslene 20, William T. 17, Edna D. 14 and Iva 10. All born TN. They are here in 1930.

 

SARAH PUTMAN ANDERSON  Lake County

Sarah Miller is the widow of George Washington Putman from Reelfoot here in Lake County in 1910. He was a son of John Putman and Nancy Vaughn. George was killed in 1912, and Sarah has married W. G. Anderson. She is 37 IL. She has her Putman children with her. They are Rae a daughter 15 TN, Pearl 12 TN and Fannie Mae 8 TN.

 

ANDREW J. PUTMAN  Lawrence County

Miles Putman’s son is up from Lauderdale County Alabama. He is 38 AL, Cora B. 32 AL, Turner Lee 15 TN, Haywood 12 TN, Gracie Belle 7 TN, Donald G. 4 TN, Eva J. 1. They were briefly back in Lauderdale County for the 1910 census, but all the kids were born in TN, so they weren't there long. They are, however, back in Lauderdale County Alabama by 1930.

 

(GEORGE) WORTH PUTMAN  Lincoln County

Still here, he is George Worth Putman. He is 27 TN, Ila Whitt 25 TN, Kathleen 8, Ben W. (Whitt) 5 and Thomas 2. All are TN. They were married here November 27, 1913. In 1930 George is alone in Robertson County working on the highway, and also listed with the whole family in Smith County Tennessee.

 

HENRY PUTMAN  Madison County

His wife Leavie Smith died recently. He is 39 TN. Children now are Clara 11 TN, Lily 9 TN, Hazel 4 TN and Edward (Walter Edward) 16 months old. They were here in 1910. Rand noticed that there is a Gus Putman here in 1940 with a son named Edward who is 21TN and fits perfectly. It looks like he is Henry Gus Putman or Gus Henry Putman and based on his death record, his folks are Nelce Putman and Merry Gardner. Probably Nelson Putman. But no idea who Nelson is.

 

VERNON TAYLOR PUTMAN  Madison County

William and Lucy's son has moved from Gibson County. He is now 30, Bertha Christine Wallsmith his wife is 30, Carmackel 11, Clint 8, John 5 and Vernon Jr. 1. Vernon will be in a State Hospital in 1930 and I can’t locate the rest of the family. I think Bertha may die in the 1920s.

 

FRANKLIN PUTMAN  Marion County

Mary Putman's son from Bledsoe County. He just moves all the time. They were in Bledsoe County in 1900 and in Sequatchie County in 1910. He is now 52 TN, Minta (Arminta Childers) 45 TN, Ray 18 TN, his wife Amanda McCurry 16 TN and Blanche 16 TN. They are here in 1930. Ray and Amanda will go over to Ohio and have a son Basil there in 1923. I don’t find them in 1930 here or there, but Basil is in Chattanooga in 1930 with Joseph and Mary Ables. Not sure who the Ables are.

 

KENNETH PUTMAN  Marion County

Frank and Minta's son is 20 TN and boarding with his sister Eula D. 31 TN and her husband Howell G. Kilgore 39 TN and that family.

 

FRANK PUTMAN  McNairy County

He is Thomas Franklin Putman, a son of John F. and Martha. In fact, his folks are with him as well as his brother Ernest. Frank is 38, Gethie Smith 37, Velma 12, Marie 9, Maggie 7, Hally 5, William 3, Leon 6 months. John is 79 TN and Martha (Lain) is 76 TN.

 

ERNEST PUTMAN  McNairy County

Living with his brother Frank. Ernest is 32 TN.

 

JOHN F. PUTMAN  McNairy County

John, Martin's son, is 79 TN, Martha Lain is 76 TN. Both are living with young Frank.

 

ANDREW PUTMAN  Morgan County

He is a son of Franklin and Minta from Bledsoe County. He is 26 TN, Belle Hamilton his wife is 22 TN, Howard 2 1/2 and Conely 10 months TN. They are in Warren County Ohio by 1930.

 

DAVID PUTMAN  Rutherford County

He is 37 TN and his brother Henry 34 TN. They are John William Putman and Mary Sanford's sons. Their dad died before 1910 and their mom was widowed here in 1910. Dave is married here in 1930.

 

HENRY PUTMAN  Rutherford County

He is Benjamin Henry Putman, David's brother, and is 34 TN. See above.

 

IRVIN THOMAS PUTMAN  Rutherford County

John W.'s son is now 37, Bernice Jennings 36, Sanford 14 and Margaret 2. All born in TN.

 

SOPHRONIA PUTNAM  Shelby County

She is 92 AL living as grandmother of Sam Wilson. Sophronia Fearn married John Murdock Putnam in Huntsville, Madison County Alabama in 1847. They moved to Mississippi. Her daughter, Elizabeth, married the Wilson guy and Sam is hers. John's dad was Charles Caleb from Newburyport, Massachusetts via Georgetown, Washington D.C. John was born in Knox County Tennessee. Just kinda fun to see the old gal back home again.

 

MILO LEE PUTMAN  Erwin, Unicoi County

Drury's son is still here. He is 51 NC, Louise G. Nowell 40 NC. They have no kids, but have taken in 2 roomers to make ends meet. They will be here in 1930 with their married daughter Florence.

 

GUS M. (AUGUSTUS MERRIMAN) PUTNAM  Unicoi County

He is Augustus Merriman Putman, son of James Webster Putman and Martha Reed of Mitchell County North Carolina. He is 55 NC NC NC and his wife Julia Ann Miller 53 NC NC NC. His twin sons Webb (James Webster) 14 NC and Winfred (Fred Winifred) 14 NC are here and so is his married daughter Ellen Jarrett 25 NC and her kids Farrell 8 TN, Bonnie 6 TN, Jess W. 3 4/12 MI and Richard E. 7/12 MI. Ellen is married to Jesse Jarrett who is somewhere. Gus is here in 1930 and he and Julia will move to Michigan in early August of 1941 and he will die a week or so later in Adrian, Michigan on August 16, 1941.

 

SAMUEL PUTMAN  Unicoi County

He is 37 NC lodging with Edgar Lewis. He is a railroad engineer.

 

EDMOND PUTNAM  District 9, Washington County

His is 56 MA MA MA and is married but living on his own. He works as a miner, which matches his previous employment in Massachusetts. He is Edmund Putnam, son of John Henry Putnam and Martha Ellen Claxton.  He was born in Beverly, Massachusetts May 31, 1863 and will die in Beverly on June 6, 1931. He was in Beverly in 1900 and 1910. His first wife Mary Frances Bestwick died on August 2, 1911 in Beverly and he married Hortense William on January 4, 1917 in Manhattan, New York. He and Hortsense will be in New Haven, Connecticut in 1930.

 

HOWARD JAYTHE or JABEL PUTMAN  Williamson County

William's son is 29 TN, Sallie Barnes 27 TN and Billie a daughter 2 1/2 TN. He lives with his widowed dad here in town.

 

WILLIAM DAVID PUTMAN  Williamson County

He is a son of William and Jessie from this county. He is 36 TN, Clara Daisy Sanford 36 TN, Jessie M. 3 and William V. 1 4/12 TN. I don't find him in 1910 in Tennessee. He married Clara December 29, 1915. Clara will die in about 2 years, and he will marry a Maude and be with her and the kids in Nashville in 1930.

 

WILLIAM J. (JABEL) PUTMAN  Williamson County

David Vance's son is still here. He is now 60 TN and a widower since Jessie Battle has died. His son Howard lives with him. They are all here in 1930.

JOHN H. (HOWARD) PUTNAM  District 2, Bledsoe County

He is now 60 TN AL TN. His wife Vinnie Mae Blalock is 52 TN and they have an adopted son John W. Putnam 3 TN. He is still an attorney, but will soon become a County Judge. He is a son of James Monroe Putman and Sarah Elizabeth Poe and was born here.

 

WINNIE S. (SAMUEL) PUTNAM  District 2, Bledsoe County

He is 45 TN AL TN and is a farmer. Gertrude Patton his wife is 45 TN and they now have Edith 10 TN, and William 7 TN. He is a son of James Monroe Putman and Sarah Elizabeth Poe and was born here.

 

ROSCOE PUTNAM  Pikeville, Bledsoe County

Roscoe George is another son of James Monroe Putman and Sarah Elizabeth Poe and was born here. He is 48 TN AL TN and owns a grocery store in town. Sallie Humphries his wife is 43 TN. They have Mildred W. 23 TN, Hazel E. 21 TN and Jack E. 17 TN.

 

A. P. PUTMAN  Huntingdon, Carroll County

He is a Negro 27 AL single and boarding.

 

JANE PUTMAN  Tullahoma, Coffee County

She is Delia Jane Martin, the widow now of John Morgan Putman. She is 58 TN, Paul 29 GA, Emma 32 GA, Buford 26 GA. John was a son of Daniel T. Putman and Nancy Jane Garland from Jackson County Alabama and then here in Coffee County.

 

WILLIAM PUTMAN  Tullahoma, Coffee County

He is now 65 TN AL TN. His two sisters Mary Lou 74 TN and Virginia 59 TN are still with him. None of these kids ever married. They are all kids of John Covington Putman and Elizabeth Graham. Their dad was a Methodist minister. He and Mary Lou are here in 1940. Virginia will die here January 23, 1940.

 

JOHN PUTMAN  District 12, Crockett County

He is 40 TN MS TN and is an insurance agent. His new wife Minnie Williamson is 44 TN and he has Virginia 16 TN. He was married to Mary Walker who died here in 1918. Her widowed father, Doctor Dave Walker 75 TN is still with him as he was in 1920. John C. Putman is a son of Henderson Griggs Putman from Dyer County.

 

WILL E. (ELLISTON) PUTMAN  District 7, Davidson County

He is now 39 TN TN TN and is an electrician with his own business. Lorena Henderson his wife is 36 TN, Melvin Lee 19 TN and Mary Louise 15 TN.

 

ADRIAN E. (ERIC) PUTNAM  District 11, Davidson County

He is 53 IA IA IA. He is director of the Rural Educational Farm a part of the Madison Sanitarium. His wife Bertha Mary Phillips is 50 MO and a Matron of one of the Halls. They have Dale 21 TX and Lucille 17 NE. He is a son of James Rufus Putnam, and was born in Marion County Iowa and was at home in Pottawattamie County Iowa in 1900. They were here in 1920 too. I don’t know when they moved into North Carolina, but he died in Center Township, Chatham County in 1957 and Bertha in 1960. They are buried in Hank’s Chapel Cemetery.

 

A. T. (ANDREW THOMAS) PUTMAN  Bordeaux, Davidson County

He is 48 TN TN TN and is a switchman for the railroad. Dawsey Ramsey his wife is 38 TN. They now have Leroy 20 TN, Ernest 17 TN, Evelyn 15 TN, Leonard 12 TN, James 7 TN, Mary 7 TN and Gordon 5 TN. He is a son of John Putman and Mary Rummage from Williamson County. They were here in 1920.

 

CHARLES D. PUTMAN  Nashville, Davidson County

He is now 55 TN TN TN and his wife Lillie French is 46 TN. He is a house carpenter. Charles is a son of John Putman and Nancy Vaughan from Williamson County. He was in Dyer County in 1900 and here ever since.

 

CLIFFORD PUTMAN  Nashville, Davidson County

He is 31 TN TN TN and runs or works in a grocery store. His wife Ailene Seibert is 27 TN. He is a son of James Putman and Martha Lunn from here in Nashville. His folks have retired and are living in Orange County Florida. Clifford and Ailene are here in 1940.

 

FINES PUTMAN  Nashville, Davidson County

This is a Negro family.

 

FRANCES PUTMAN  Nashville, Davidson County

She is 20 TN and married for 2 years. She has a daughter Frances 9/12 TN but no husband. She is listed as a niece of William and Susan Storey. She is Frances American Joyce Martin and was married to Lon Alonzo Putman Junior on February 27, 1927. Lonny was a son of Lon Alonzo Putman and Mamie Braswell and was at home here in the 1920. Now … the kid is here in Nashville in the 1940 with the Storey family and is a guy Frances.

 

GEORGE PUTMAN  Nashville, Davidson County

He is 23 AL AL AL single and boarding. Pretty sure he is the son of Edward George and Janie Putman and was shown with them in 1910 in Birmingham, Jefferson County Alabama. New York Dutch family.

 

JAMES PUTMAN  Nashville, Davidson County

He is a Negro with a large family.

 

J. (JOHN) M. PUTNAM  Nashville, Davidson County

He is 50 TN TN TN and a clerk in the Post Office. May Ella Oakley his wife is 47 TN. They have been married 30 years now. Her brother Tom Oakley 31 TN is with them. His son Woodrow is listed next and probably lives in the same house.

 

LUVINIA PUTMAN  Nashville, Davidson County

She is a Negro girl living with her stepfather.

 

NORVELLA PUTNAM  Nashville, Davidson County

She is a widowed black lady.

 

ROBERT E. L. PUTMAN  Nashville, Davidson County

John and Mary's son from Williamson County. He is 35 TN, Rosie Lee Shaw 29 TN, Buford F. 14 TN and Dorothy N. 10 TN. He and Rosie are here in 1940.

 

W. J. (WOODROW JABEL) PUTNAM  Nashville, Davidson County

John and Mae’s son is now 25 TN TN TN and works on boilers for the power company. His wife of 6 years Hettie M. Gill is 27 TN and they have John I. 5 TN and Marshall 2 TN. Woodrow was born May 11, 1904 and will die here in Nashville in November 1969. They are here in 1950. The son Marshall Young Putnam was born here Friday January 6, 1928 and will die in Lebanon, Ohio Monday June 13, 2011. He will marry Regina Finney, work on the L & N railroad and be in the 101 Airborne Division in World War II.

 

W. D. (WILLIAM DAVID) PUTNAM  Nashville, Davidson County

He is a son of William J. Putman and Jessie Battle from Williamson County and in Rutherford County before that. He is 45 TN TN TN and out of work. He has a new wife Maude 38 TN. From the age gap in the kids, it looks like Clara died about 1922 and he married Maude about 1925. Kids are Jessie M. a daughter 13 TN, William V. 11 TN, David J. 9 TN, W. (William) J. 4 TN, Jimmie 2 TN and Howard A. 10/12 TN. He was in Williamson County up till now.

 

WILLIAM M. PUTNAM  Nashville, Davidson County

He is 46 SC SC SC and widowed. His son Leroy is 24 SC. They both work in a cotton mill as loomers. He is a son of Cornelius Putman and Margaret Peden from Laurens County and then Greenville County. He was married in Greenville County South Carolina in 1920.

 

SAM P. (PINKNEY) PUTMAN  Cheatham, Dickson County

He is 35 TN TN TN and single. He is a son of David Vance and Mattie Putman from here. He was with his widowed mother here in 1910 and 1920. His widowed grandmother Nancy Johnson 88 TN is with him.

 

CARMACK PUTMAN  De Kalb County

He is William Carmack Putman 23 TN TN TN and owns a farm. He has been married 2 years to Ailene 21 TN TN TN. He is a son of Vernon Taylor Putman and Bertha Wallsmith from Gibson and then Morgan County. His dad is in the State Hospital in Bolivar, Hardeman County and will be there till he dies in 1953. I don’t know where his mom Bertha is.

 

WILLIAM L. (LOVELACE) PUTMAN  District 2, Dyer County

Henderson’s son is now 42 TN MS TN and a farmer. Callie M. Kee his wife is 41 TN, Mary E. (Estelle) 18 TN and William T. (Thomas) 8 TN. He was born here.

 

JIM H. (HENDERSON) PUTMAN  District 2, Dyer County

He is 40 TN MS TN and a farmer. His wife Minnie Belle Smith is 39 TN and they have James S. 13 TN, Pauline B. 11 TN and Mary C. 8 TN. Another son of Henderson Griggs Putman and Flora Lovelace.

 

SAM PUTMAN  Dyersburg, Dyer County

He is a son of Samuel Putman and Mary Ann Call from Limestone County Alabama. He was born there and there through the 1920 census.

He is 29 TN TN TN and is a stock farmer, pigs and all that sort. His wife Jennie (Elma Jane Gifford) is 34 TN and they have Kenneth A. 4 10/12 TN and Jimmy C. 1 7/12 TN. Ellis is the eldest son of the following Forest Putman. He was born October 10, 1900 and died October 2, 1965. They were married November 19, 1922.

 

FOREST PUTMAN  District 4, Franklin County

He is 47 TN AL TN and is a farmer. His wife Jennie, Nancy Jane Gifford, is 44 AL. They have Virgil 28 TN, Flora 21 TN, Mamie 16 AL, Ruby 14 TN, Jeanette 12 TN, Jesse Erskin a son 5 TN, and soon Mildred who is born in 1931. Forest Warren is a son of Jesse Putman and Amanda Posey from here. He was born here December 2, 1882 and will be here until he dies June 17, 1956. Nancy died here on January 27, 1943. He was briefly in Alabama in 1920, and then came back here forever.

 

FLOYD M. (McKINLEY) PUTMAN  District 9, Giles County

He is 29 (should read 33) TN TN TN, and is a general farmer. Cassie Reeves his wife is 29 TN and they have Dimple 8 TN, Mahlon 5 TN, and Paul 2 TN. Floyd was born July 27, 1896 and will die in Maury County in February 1966. Cassie was born in 1900 and will die in Columbia, Maury County in 1971. He is a son of Franklin Putman and Arminta Elvira Childers from Bledsoe County.

He is 47 WI WI WI and a house carpenter. Cordelia his wife is 44 TN. This is a second marriage for both. She has a 26 year old married daughter and 3 grandsons all from Tennessee. He is John Thomas Putnam a son of Thomas Edward Putnam and Lillian Cleveland and was born May 12, 1883 in Winneconne, Winnebago County Wisconsin. His folks were there in 1880. He then pops up in 1910 in Jackson County Alabama with a new wife, Stella, from Tennessee. He obviously went into Tennessee in the early 1900s as they had a child born there in 1909. He and Cordelia were here in 1920 as well. All ties in as he says he was first married at age 25 and he was that age in 1910. He is widowed here in 1940.

 

ROBERT PUTNAM  Chattanooga, Hamilton County

He is a 23-year-old Negro servant.

 

ROOSEVELT W. (WILLIAM) PUTNAM  Chattanooga, Hamilton County

He is 25 AL AL AL and works in a cotton mill. His wife Lavada McGuffey is 20 AL. They were just married back in Calhoun County Alabama February 22, 1928. They have Gertrude 1 5/12 AL and Kathleen 2/12 TN. His widowed mother Fannie Ayers is 42 AL and his brother Burney L. (Lewis) is 19 AL. Long story here. Fannie Wilson Stephenson was the second wife of William Silas Putnam from Calhoun County Alabama. He died January 1, 1916. She then married Charles Ayers in 1919 and they were all there in 1920. Then Charlie just took off and deserted the family. These folks came up here about 1929 or early 1930.

This is a very large Black family. His wife Mary Garlington is part Cherokee Indian based on an old newspaper article.

 

VERNON PUTMAN  Bolivar, Hardeman County

He is 43 TN US US and a patient at the Western State Hospital for the Insane. He would be William Putman and Lucy Blerdsoe’s son from Gibson County. He was with his wife Bertha Christine Wallsmith and kids in Madison County in 1920. I don’t find the rest of the family now. He was born September 22, 1885. According to the WWI draft registration, his wife was Bertha Wallsmith. He is here in the Hospital in 1940 and will die here in Bolivar March 12, 1955.

He is Francis Marion Putman’s son and was in Giles County in 1920. He is 49 TN AL TN and a farmer. Dovie J. Perkins his wife is 40 TN. They now have Robert 19 TN, Margaret 16 TN, Alice 5 TN.

He is 57 TN TN TN and a foreman on the Southern Railroad. Martha Tennessee ‘Tennie’ Dixon his wife is 53 TN, Nesline J. a daughter is 30 TN, William T. 27 TN and Edna 23 TN. He is a son of William C. Putnam and Jessie Dodge from here. Been here all his life.

He is 31 NC NC NC single, boarding and out of work.

 

LEE PUTMAN  District 2, Lawrence County

He is 25 AL AL AL and is a barber. Verdie Williams his wife is 20 TN and they have Edith 1 7/12 TN. They were married here June 11, 1927. He is Turner Lee a son of Andrew and Cora Putman from Lauderdale County Alabama.

 

BILLIE PUTMAN  District 3, Lawrence County

He is 34 NC NC NC and a farmer. His wife Estella Roach is 32 NC. They now have Clara 12 NC, Lois 11 NC, Herman 9 NC, Elise 3 NC and Lucile 5/12 TN. His mother is listed next and you can get the lineage there. For what it’s worth his mother’s mother was a Roach also from Rutherford County so Estella is kinda kin of sorts.

 

JANE PUTMAN  District 3, Lawrence County

She is 58 NC and widowed. Her son George is 15 NC. Her son Grady is 22 NC and is married to Vinnie White 17 TN. They were just married. Margaret Jane Owens is the widow of James Alfred Putman from Rutherford County North Carolina. James was a son of Thomas Y. Putman and Sarah Jane Robbins from there.

 

ESTELLE PUTNAM  District 1, Marion County

She is 24 TN and widowed. She lives with her mother Maggie Morrison. The following Franklin Putman’s son Ray had married Amanda Childers and went to Ohio and had a kid Basil there in 1923. He came back and married Estell Morrison here in Marion County on September 24, 1928. Guess he died.

 

FRANK PUTNAM  District 1, Marion County

Franklin Varner Putman is listed as 58 TN TN TN but I think he is around 62. His wife Arminta Elvira Childers is 52 TN but should be about 56. He is the son of Mary Putman from Bledsoe County and some unknown father. He has been in Bledsoe County then Sequatchie County in 1910 and here in 1920.

 

ANNIE PUTMAN  Etowah, McMinn County

She is 50 GA and widowed. She lives with her married daughter Mira 25 GA and her husband Bailey McDonald 31 NC. Annie Swan is the widow of John Robert Putnam from Gordon County Georgia. She was widowed there in 1920. Her son George is here in town too.

 

GEORGE T. (THOMAS) PUTMAN  Etowah, McMinn County

He is 29 GA GA GA and a mechanic for the railroad. Chassie L. Casteel his wife is 26 TN. They have been married a little over 4 years. He is a son of John Robert Putman and Annie Swan from Gordon County Georgia. His widowed mom is here in town with his married sister Myra. George was born October 18, 1897 and will die here October 1, 1990. Chassie was born September 6, 1902 and will die August 17, 1980 here in McMinn County.

He is 48 TN, his wife Gethie Belle Smith is 48 TN and they now have Velma 22 TN, Marie 19 TN (AR I think), Maggie 17 TN, Hallie 15 TN, William A. 13 TN, Leon 10 TN, Frankie Belle 9 TN. His brother Ernest 43 TN is with him like he was in 1920. He is Thomas Franklin Putman, son of John Franklin Putman and Martha Lain from here. He has his own farm. He was born in McNairy County October 31, 1882 and will die here January 27, 1951. He married Gethie here June 22, 1906. She is a daughter of William Smith and was born in November 1882 and will die here September 20, 1951. They are here in 1935 and then in Corinth, Alcorn County Mississippi in 1940.

 

G. W. (GEORGE WORTH) PUTMAN  Springfield, Robertson County

He is 45 TN TN TN married and boarding. He works for the highway department. He is a son of George Lee Putman and grandson of Abraham Pinckney Putman of Georgia. He was born in Lincoln County Tennessee and has been there up till now. He is also listed with his family in Smith County now, and they will soon be in Alabama.

 

BILL PUTMAN  District 10, Rutherford County

He is 50 TN TN TN single and lodging. He is a laborer. This is James William Putman a son of John W. and Mary Putman from here. He was born here February 16, 1879. He was in St. Louis, Missouri in 1920. He will be here now till he dies January 10, 1959. He is buried in Murfreesboro along with his wife Fannie. She was born August 13, 1906 and died August 29, 1950.

 

DAVID PUTMAN  District 8, Rutherford County

He is now 48 TN TN TN and married to Allie half his age at 24 TN TN TN and they have been married for 8 years. They have Lewis 6 TN and Willie 4 TN. He is a son of John William Putman and Mary Sanford from here. Their dad died before 1910 and their mom was widowed here in 1910. Dave was single here in 1930. The son Willie Gene was born here and will be in Bedford County in 1940 single as his dad will have died or something by then.

GEORGE W. (WORTH) PUTMAN  Carthage, Smith County

He is 37 TN TN TN and owns his own steam shovel. He is also listed in Robertson County using that shovel on the new highway there. His wife Ida Whitt is 35 TN. They have Kathleen 15 TN, Ben W. 13 TN, Thomas 10 TN, Charles 8 TN and Elizabeth 6 TN. He is a son of George Lee Putman and Mary McLemore from Georgia and then Texas. His dad came back here and married Mary in Lincoln County Tennessee and then moved to Madison County Alabama where he died in 1906. His wife then came back to Tennessee and George grew up in Lincoln County. They will be moving to Alabama in a few years.

 

JAMES M. (MADISON) PUTMAN  Gordonsville, Smith County

He is 46 AL AL AL and is a Methodist Clergyman. Mary Elizabeth Davis his wife is 44 TN, and they have James C. 14 TN, Catherine G. 11 TN, Eugene Hendrix 7 TN. He is a son of Miles Richard Putman and Susan Jane Sledge from Lauderdale County Alabama. They were in Wayne County in 1910 and Giles County in 1920.

 

FRED PUTNAM  District 3, Unicoi County

He is 25 NC NC NC and boarding. He is a twin of Webb Putman listed next. He will soon move to Adrian, Michigan where he will marry Ada Beatrice Neal on July 19, 1936. He will die up there August 23, 1987. His brother Frank is up in Adrian now married to Eliza Horton and has a bunch of kids already.

 

WEBB J. PUTNAM  District 3, Unicoi County

He is James Webster Putnam and was here with his folks in 1910 and probably in 1920 though not indexed. He is 25 NC NC NC. His wife Sylvia McIntruff is 23 TN. They have Viola 5 TN, Ben 4 TN and Pauline 1 6/12 TN. Also here is his father Augustus 65 NC and his sister Gertie 14 TN. Augustus Merriman Putman is a son of James Webster Putman and Martha Reed of Mitchell County North Carolina. He is married to Julia Ann Miller. Julia has to be around someplace. The family was here in 1910 and 1920, and will be in 1940. Webb will join his brother Fred and go out to Michigan in a few years. Gus and Julia will move to Michigan in early August of 1941 and he will die there in Adrian, Michigan on August 16, 1941.

He is 62 NC NC NC, Louisa Nowell his wife is 53 NC. They live with their now married daughter Florence M. 33 VA and her husband A. D. Updyke. He is a son of Druary Alston Putman and Ella Cordellia Irby from Mitchell County North Carolina. He was in Virginia in 1900 and here in 1910. Louise is widowed here in 1940 still with her daughter Florence.

 

BAXTER B. PUTNAM  Johnson City, Washington County

He is 45 SC and an inmate at the National Sanitarium here. He is a son of James Monroe Putman from Cherokee County South Carolina.

 

WILLIAM J. (JABEL) PUTNAM  Nolensville, Williamson County

He is 73 TN TN TN and widowed as he was in 1920. He still operates his own grocery store. His son Howard Jabel is 42 TN, his wife Sallie Barnes 38 TN and their daughter Billie 13 TN. Howard works at his dad’s grocery store as a salesman. There is a boarder Leon Ball 18 TN who also works at the store. Young Howard married Sallie in Nashville November 1, 1916. He was previously married to Bessie Potts.

He is 14 TN single and lodging. He is a son of David Putman and his wife Allie and was with them in Rutherford County in 1930. Dave was a son of John William Putman and Mary Sanford from there. He was born August 3, 1925 and will die in Smyrna, Rutherford County in February 1982.

 

ROSCOE G. (GEORGE) PUTNAM  Pikeville, Bledsoe County

Roscoe George is another son of James Monroe Putman and Sarah Elizabeth Poe and was born here. He is 57 TN AL TN and now owns a funeral home. Had a grocery store in 1930. Guess stale bodies are better than fresh fruit, profit-wise. Sallie Humphries his wife is 53 TN. Also here is their daughter Hazel 31 TN, son Jack 27 TN, and his married or separated daughter Mildred Putnam Beck 33 TN. Roscoe’s widowed sister Mary Hester Patton 67 AR is here to. Mayme was first married to Andrew Payne in 1891 and widowed by 1900. She later married Elijah Patton and wore him out too it seems. Anyway, Roscoe was born March 21, 1882 and will die here in Pikeville June 1, 1951. Sallie was born in James County August 10, 1886 and will die here in Pikeville November 17, 1952.

 

IRENE PUTNAM  Outside Pikeville, Bledsoe County

She is 24 TN and widowed. She has a daughter Billy B. or Betty B. 4 TN. She owns the house she is in. Roscoe Putnam’s son Jack might be her ex. I just don’t know.

He is 55 TN AL TN and is a farmer. Gertrude Laura Patton his wife is 49 TN and they have Edith 20 TN, and Wilbur 17 TN still at home. He is a son of James Monroe Putman and Sarah Elizabeth Poe and was born here.

 

WINTON PUTNAM  Outside Pikeville, Bledsoe County

He is 13 TN single and living with J. R. and Lilly Pendergrass who are his guardians. He is John Winston or Winton Putnam who is an adopted child of John Howard Putnam and Vinnie Mae Blalok and was with them in 1930. Vinnie died here June 13, 1932 and John died April 13, 1937.

He is 58 GA, his wife Emma Marvel 32 TN and they have Ulysses 15 TN. Her widowed mother Martha Marvel 65 TN is with them. He is a clothing salesman. Sam is a son of Willie Woods Putman from Gordon County Georgia. He was married to Ida Blackwell through the 1920 census back in Gordon County. She died in the 1920s and Sam and Emma were in Harlan County Kentucky in 1930 and 1935 and he was a clothing salesman then as well.

 

JESS PUTMAN  Elizabethtown, Carter County

He is 43 NC and his wife Florida Townsend is 34 NC and they have Elbert 10 NC. He is a carpenter in a lumberyard. He is a son of George Washington Putman and Nancy Bryant from Harrell, Mitchell County North Carolina. He was born July 19, 1898 and was there through 1930 and here by 1935. His brother Mallie Kai Putman has also moved over here recently and lives next door or possibly in the same house. Jess will be here till he dies April 7, 1952.

 

MALLIE PUTMAN  Elizabethtown, Carter County

He is 36 NC, his wife Euna J. Aldridge is 35 NC and they now have Felix 11 NC, Frank 10 NC, Virginia 8 NC, Edna 5 NC and Farrell a son 2 NC. He just got here a couple of years ago and works in the lumberyard with his brother Jesse. He lives next door or possibly in the same house as Jess. He is another son of George Washington Putman and Nancy Bryant from Harrell, Mitchell County North Carolina. He was born April 15, 1904 and was there through 1935.He and Euna were married April 10, 1926. They will move up North later. He will die in Rising Sun, Maryland November 19, 1987. Euna was born April 24, 1904 and will die in Hampton, New Jersey June 3, 1991.

 

DELIA PUTMAN  Tullahoma, Coffee County

She is 68 TN and widowed as she was in 1930.At home is her daughter Emma 42 GA and single as she will be until she dies July 22, 1961. Her son John Buford is 38 GA and his wife Ella 28 TN and they have Robert 9 TN and Betty 3 TN. Delia Jane Martin has been here married to John Morgan Putman. They were married April 10, 1896 and he died here June 30, 1928.

 

PAUL PUTMAN  Tullahoma, Coffee County

He is 38 GA and his wife Lottie Mae Angel is 38 TN. He is a truck driver with his own truck. Paul Daniel Putman is a son of John Morgan Putman and Delia Jane Martin from here. The folks moved to Cobb County Georgia in 1898 and that’s where Paul was born May 20, 1899. His dad died here June 30, 1926 and his widowed mom lives next door as she did in 1930. Lottie was born April 9, 1902 and died December 4, 1959. He will die in Tullahoma, Coffee County in March 1966.

 

WILLIAM C. (CRUTCHFIELD) PUTMAN  Tullahoma, Coffee County

He is now 75 TN AL TN. He was born January 14, 1865 and will die here September 19, 1942. His sister Mary Lou 84 TN is with him as she has forever. His sister Virginia who was with them in 1930 has just died here January 23, 1940. None of them ever married. He is a son of John Covington Putman and Elizabeth Graham. His dad was a Methodist minister.

 

JOHN C. (CARLYLE) PUTMAN  District 12, Crockett County

He is 49 TN MS TN and is still an insurance agent for Farm and Life. His second wife Minnie Williamson is 55 TN and he has Virginia 16 TN. He was married to Mary Walker who died here in 1918. John is a son of Henderson Griggs Putman and Flora Alice Lovelace from Dyer County. He was born May 21, 1890 and will die April 4, 1958. Minnie will die and he will marry Mildred Dodson here August 3, 1947.

 

BESSIE PUTMAN  Belle Meade City, Davidson County

She is a Negro 31 TN divorced and a servant in a Woodcock household. She is still divorced but in Nashville in 1950.

 

A. T. (ANDREW THOMAS) PUTMAN  Bordeaux, Davidson County

He is 56 TN TN TN and is a switchman for the railroad. Dawsey Ramsey his wife is 48 TN. They have, James 18 TN, Mary 17 TN and Gordon 15 TN. He is a son of John Putman and Mary Rummage from Williamson County. They have been here since 1920. Andrew was born September 3, 1883 and will die November 5, 1981 at age 98. He married Dawsey Ramsey in September 1909. Dawsey was born November 11, 1891 also in Williamson County and she will die here May 5, 1983.

 

E. J. (ERNEST JOHNSON) PUTMAN  Bordeaux, Davidson County

He is 27 TN, his wife Velma Robbins 24 TN and they have James 2 TN. He is a clerk in a grocery store. He is a son of Andrew Thomas Putman and Dawsey Ramsey and was born here August 3, 1913 and will die July 13, 1989. They are here in 1950 and he works for the Railroad then.

 

LEONARD PUTMAN  Bordeaux, Davidson County

He is 22 TN and is an assistant attendant at the Davidson County Hospital for the Insane. He is a son of Andrew Thomas Putman and Dawsey Ramsey and was born here May 29, 1917. He will soon marry Margaret Jones and they will have two daughters.

 

LEROY PUTMAN  Bordeaux, Davidson County

He is 29 TN and his wife Thelma Rust is 28 TN. He is a foreman on a W.P.A. road construction crew. He is a son of Andrew Thomas Putman and Dawsey Ramsey and was born here August 3, 1910 and will die January 25, 1975. They never had any children.

He is 23 TN, and his wife Gladys Opal Smith 20 TN, and they have Buford F. Jr. 1 TN and William R. 3/12 TN. He is an electrician at Jordan Electric Company. He is a son of Robert E. Lee Putman and Rosa Lee Shaw. They are here with two more daughters in 1950 and will be forever.

 

CLEMMIE PUTMAN  Nashville, Davidson County

Strange listing and I couldn’t find any earlier. Starts with Lillie Phelps 56 TN, her son-in-law Clemmie Putman 27 TN, her daughter Flossie Putman 26 TN, granddaughter Juanita 2 TN, son Erskine Phelps 36 TN, son James Phelps 21 TN, and son William Phelps 18 TN. Then I found Clemmie showing up in 1950 and the whole thing started getting solved. In 1950 Clemmie is named as James C. and he and Flossie have two kids and her mother Lillie Phelps is still with them. So, then I tried Ancestry and found his draft card. That had him as James Clemmie Putman born April 3, 1914 in Huntsville, Alabama not in Tennessee as it said in 1940 and 1950. I looked in my Alabama 1930 census, and sure enough he was in Athens, Limestone County Alabama with his widowed mother Mary Lee Hill who had been married to William George Putman from Athens who was killed in an accidental explosion while working on highway construction in 1929. And  he was listed as Clemmie 16 AL in the 1930. See him in 1950 here in Nashville

 

CLIFFORD PUTMAN  Nashville, Davidson County

He is 40 TN, and his wife Ailene Seibert is 35 TN. They live with her folks William and Annie Seibert. He is a son of James Putman and Martha Lunn from here in Nashville. The folks retired and are living in Orange County Florida. When Clifford enlists in the Army in 1942, he states he and Ailene are separated. After the war, he will move to Florida and marry Annie Dora Debary in 1946. He was born in Nashville February 10, 1899 and will die in Lakeland, Polk County Florida May 29, 1984. Annie was born in Manatee, Florida October 11, 1911 and will die in Ocala, Marion County Florida December 5, 1999. Annie first married Henry Frank Edwards April 24, 1926 in Manatee and divorced him in 1937. She then married Herbert Thomas Hartman in 1940 and they were divorced in Marion County in 1946 and she married Clifford later that year in Polk County.

 

FINIS W. PUTNAM  Nashville, Davidson County

He is a Negro 41 IN with a wife Mayfair 40 TN and 5 kids.

 

FLORNIE PUTMAN  Nashville, Davidson County

She is 31 TN with a daughter Reba 12 AL. Says she is married but is lodging with a Curry family. She is Florence West and was married to Grover Putman in Athens, Limestone County Alabama in 1930 and then here in 1935. They were married in Giles County Tennessee August 11, 1923 Grover is a son of William George Putman and Mary Lee Hill from Limestone County. Grover was born July 3, 1905 and will die March 12, 1951 according to his tombstone. Guess they have separated for a while and will get divorced in Duval, Florida in 1945. Grover was buried in Athens, Alabama but he died in Berrien County Michigan.

 

GILBERT PUTMAN  Nashville, Davidson County

He is 39 TN, his wife Lydia Mae Powers is 36 AL and they have Mabel Lucille 19 AL, Stella 16 AL, William Hoyt 12 AL, Luther Gilbert Jr. 9 AL, Marie 7 AL, a daughter Dean (probably Diane) 5 AL and Ann 3 TN. Luther Gilbert Putman is a son of William George Putman and Mary Lee Hill from Limestone County Alabama. He was born April 11, 1901 and will die in Ashland City, Tennessee April 15, 1976. He married Lydia in Giles County Tennessee September 6, 1919. They were in Athens, Limestone County in 1930 and here by 1935. Lydia was born in Alabama February 28, 1903 and will die here October 2, 1958.

 

GLADYS PUTMAN  Nashville, Davidson County

She is 23 AL single and is a stenographer living in a YWCA or something with a bunch of other women. She is a daughter of William Richard Putman and Dora Lee Green from Lexington, Lauderdale County Alabama. She was born there and still with her folks there in 1935.

 

JOHN M. PUTNAM  Nashville, Davidson County

He is 60 TN TN TN and a clerk in the Post Office. May Ella Oakley his wife is 57 TN. They have been married 40 years now. His son Woodrow is listed right after him and probably lives in the same house.

 

LEONARD PUTNAM  Nashville, Davidson County

He is 11 TN and listed as an adopted son of Susie Storey 71 TN. Rand found a family Tree that says he is Leonard Alonzo ‘Lon’ Putnam born July 5, 1928 and will die in Franklin County December 18, 1993. Check out the 1930 and found a Frances Putman here with a daughter Frances 2 years old. She is listed as a niece of William Storey. So, she is not a daughter Frances, but a son Francis and related to this Storey family. Lon was a son of Leonard Alonzo Putman and his dad was here in 1820.

 

MELVIN L. (LEE) PUTMAN  Nashville, Davidson County

He is 29 TN, his wife Martha Belle Jameson is 28 KY and they have James L. 9/12 TN. He is manager of an electric shop. He is a son of William Elliston Putman and Lorena Mae Henderson and was born in Nashville April 11, 1911 and will die here February 5, 1991. He married Martha here January 27, 1936. Martha is a daughter of Elmer Claire Jameson and Hattie L. Carneal and was born in Christian County Kentucky December 10, 1911 and will die here in Nashville September 1, 1980. Southern line, Rutherford County North Carolina to Jackson County Alabama and then up here.

She is a Negro 51 TN and widowed with her married daughter and family.

 

ROBERT J. PUTNAM  Nashville, Davidson County

He works for the W.P.A. and is 35 TN, his wife Grace 28 TN, and Charles 9 TN, Gene 5 TN, and James 9/12 TN. Has a second listing as R. J. Putnam 33 TN, Grace 28 AL and same kids all TN. Can’t find him anywhere earlier. Probably a Pulman or Patman or Pitman or maybe Putnan like the listing.

 

STELLA PUTMAN  Nashville, Davidson County

She is a Negro 48 TN with a big family including her father James and sister Lizzie.

 

WILLIAM D. (DAVID) PUTNAM  Nashville, Davidson County

He is a son of William Jabel Putman and Jessie Battle from Williamson County and in Rutherford County before that. He is 56 TN and his second wife Maude Felts 48 TN. His first wife Clara Daisy Sanford died about 1922 and he married Maude about 1925. Kids still at home are William J. 14 TN, Howard A. 10 TN and Sara Ann 7 TN. He was in Williamson County up through 1920. They were here by 1930 and will be in 1950.

 

WOODROW J. (JABEL) PUTNAM  Nashville, Davidson County

He is 36 TN and works on boilers for the power company. His wife Hattie M. Gill is 37 TN and they have John J. 15 TN, Marshall Y. 12 TN and W. J. Jr. 5 TN. He is a son of John Mathew Putnam and Mae Ella Oakley from here. In fact, he lives next to his folks now same as in 1930. Woodrow was born May 11, 1904 and will die here in Nashville in November 1969. The son Marshall Young Putnam was born here Friday January 6, 1928 and will die in Lebanon, Ohio Monday June 13, 2011. He will marry Regina Finney, work on the L & N railroad and be in the 101 Airborne Division in World War II.

 

R. L. (ROBERT E. LEE) PUTMAN  Outside of Nashville, Davidson County

He is 46 TN and his wife Rosie Lee Shaw is 39 TN. He is an electrician probably with his brother William here in town. He is a son of John Putman and his second wife Mary Catherine Rummage. Family came from North Carolina to Jackson County Alabama and then up here in the 1850s. He was born October 10, 1893 in Williamson County Tennessee, and will die here in Nashville August 3, 1952.

 

WILLIAM PUTMAN  Outside of Nashville, Davidson County

He is now 48 TN TN TN and is an electrician with his own business. Lorena Henderson his wife is 45 TN. William Elliston Putman is a son of John Putman and his second wife Mary Catherine Rummage. Family came from North Carolina to Jackson County Alabama and then up here in the 1850s. Will was born June 10, 1890 and will die here in Nashville September 16, 1965. Lorena was born August 15, 1893 and will die here December 13, 1985.

 

JAMES H. (HORACE) PUTMAN  Rural, Davidson County

He is 22 AL and lives with his sister Zora Lee who married Vance Edwards back in Madison County Alabama in July 1930. He is a son of Henry Edward Putman and Belzora Robinson. He was born June 15, 1917 and will die in the Battle of Wake Island in the Pacific May 28, 1944.

 

SAM P. (PINKNEY) PUTMAN  White Bluff, Dickson County

He is 46 TN and finally married. He has been a single up until he married a widow Mrs. Luella Chappell on October 5, 1932. She has a daughter Margaret 9 TN from her first marriage and then they have Audrey Elaine 6 TN and Dave Vance 4 TN. He is a farmer. He is a son of David Vance Putman and his second younger wife Mattie Johnson from here. He was born here November 5, 1893. He was with his widowed mother here in 1910 and 1920, and with his widowed grandmother in 1930. He will die in November 1893.

 

JAS. H. (JAMES HENDERSON) PUTMAN  Freedom Township, Tigrett, Dyer County

He is 58 TN and his wife Minnie Belle Smith is 50 TN. He owns his own farm. He is a son of Henderson Griggs Putman and Flora Alice Lovelace. He was born March 30, 1882 and will die here in October 1963. Minnie is a daughter of William Jessie Smith and Betty Norville and was born April 18, 1891 and will die in Dyersburg in 1946.

 

JAS. S. (JAMES SMITH) PUTMAN  Freedom Township, Tigrett, Dyer County

He is 23 TN, his wife Sarah Elizabeth Pirtle is also 23 TN and they have Jimmie 3 TN. He is a son of James Henderson Putnam and Minnie Belle Smith and still lives in their house and is a sharecropper on their farm. Sara will die in 1978 and he will marry Myrtle Nichols. He was born here August 23, 1916 and will die in Columbia, Maury County Tennessee January 24, 2011. He will become President of the Tennessee Farm Bureau. Their only son, James Lewis Putman will marry Janie Lou Fisher and she is the one that supplied this information.

 

WILL PUTMAN  Freedom Township, Tigrett, Dyer County

William Lovelace Putman is now 52 TN MS TN and a farmer. Callie M. Kee his wife is 51 TN, Mary Estelle 28 TN and William Thomas 18 TN. He was born here March 22, 1888, a son of Henderson Putman and Flora Lovelace. He married Calle September 12, 1909. She was a daughter of Thomas Edward Kee and Hattie Isadora Faulkner and was born in Dyer County October 10, 1888 and will die here in Freedom March 9, 1941. William will die here August 5, 1952. They just had these two children.

 

GEORGE PUTMAN  Dyersburg, Dyer County

He is 30 AL, his wife Opal Sue Hall 25 TN and they have Mattie Lou 8 TN, Clarence R. 5 TN and Wilma 2 TN. He is a carder at a textile mill. He lives next door or possibly with his folks Samuel Putman and Annie Daley and was here with them in Alabama in 1920 and here in 1930. George Rabon Putman was born in Limestone County Alabama March 14, 1909 and will die in Chicago, Illinois in October 1985. Sue was born September 7, 1914 and will die in Chicago May 4, 1980.

 

RICHARD PUTMAN  Dyersburg, Dyer County

He is 40 AL, his wife Nina Florence Pylant is 35 AL and they still have at home George 14 AL, James 13 TN, Marvin 10 TN, and Richard 6 TN. Also here is their daughter Annie 19 AL, her husband Roy King 22 TN with Gladys 3 TN and Peggy 1 TN. Their daughter Minnie Sharp 23 AL is now widowed and back living with them. Richard is yet another son of Sam and Annie. He was missing in 1920 but was here in Tennessee, and was in Limestone County Alabama in 1930 and now back here till he dies in January 1974.

 

SAM PUTMAN  Dyersburg, Dyer County

He is 68 AL AL AL and works in a cotton mill as a janitor. His wife Annie Daly is 67 AL. They have Ezra 33 AL with them and listed as a son. Gotta be an error as they never had a son Ezra. Based on the age this should be their son Earl born in 1905 or Emma born in 1902. He is a son of Samuel Putman and Mary Ann Call from Limestone County Alabama. He was born there in 1869 and was there through the 1920 census. They were here in 1930 and will be till they die. Sam will die here in 1950 and Annie in 1957

He is listed as 39 TN and has a big family. I can’t find him any time earlier and he is listed as being white when everyone else on the page is black. Think a misinterpretation of the original census recording.

He is a farmer 27 TN and his wife Lizzie 37 TN. Like the above listing, but his name really looks like Patman.

 

ELLIS C. (CLAUDE) PUTMAN  Outside Huntland Township, Franklin County

He is 39 TN TN TN and is a stock farmer. His wife Elma Jane ‘Jennie’ Gifford is 45 TN and they have Kenneth A. 15 TN and Larry Gene 11 TN, June 9 TN, Guy 6 TN and Joan 3 TN. Ellis is the eldest son of Forest Putman. He was born October 10, 1900 and will die October 2, 1965. He married Jennie November 19, 1922. She was born in 1890 and will die November 19, 1995 at age 105.

 

FOREST W. (WARREN) PUTMAN  Outside Huntland Township, Franklin County

He is 52 TN AL TN and is a farmer. His wife Nancy Jane Gifford is 50 AL. They have Jesse Erskin a son 15 TN still at home. Forest Warren is a son of Jesse Putman and Amanda Posey from here. He was born here December 2, 1882 and will be here until he dies June 17, 1956. Nancy will die here on January 27, 1943. He was briefly in Alabama in 1920, and then came back here forever.

 

VIRGIL PUTNAM  Outside Huntland Township, Franklin County

He is a carpenter 36 AL, his wife Veronica Kennedy 20 TN and they have Darce 4 TN and Ronnie 3/12/TN. They were married here November 24, 1933. Lemuel Virgil Putman is a son of Forest Warren Putman and Nancy Jane Gifford from here. He was born November 18, 1902.

 

FLOYD M. (MCKINLEY) PUTMAN  Rural District 13, Giles County

He is 42 TN, and is a general farm worker. Cassie Reeves his wife is 40 TN and they have Dimple 18 TN, Mahlon 15 TN, Paul 12 TN, Bobby 9 TN, Harold 6 TN and Johnnie 3 TN. Floyd was born July 27, 1896 and will die in Maury County in February 1966. Cassie was born in 1900 and will die in Columbia, Maury County in 1971. He is a son of Franklin Putman and Arminta Elvira Childers from Bledsoe County

He is 16 OH single, lodging and a waiter in a restaurant. He is a son of Ray Putman and Amanda Childers who were in Bledsoe County in 1920 with Ray’s dad Franklin Putman. He is 57 WI WI WI widowed and still a house carpenter. He is John Thomas Putnam, son of Thomas Edward Putnam and Lillian Cleveland and was born May 12, 1883 in Winneconne, Winnebago County Wisconsin. His folks were there in 1880. He then pops up in 1910 in Jackson County Alabama with a wife Stella from Tennessee. He obviously went into Tennessee in the early 1900s as they had a child born there in 1909. Then he and a second wife Cordelia were here in 1920 and 1930 and he is now still living with Cordelia’s married daughter Ruth Rogers as they were in 1930.

Fannie Wilson Stephenson was the second wife of William Silas Putnam from Calhoun County Alabama. He died January 1, 1916. Burne was born in Calhoun County Alabama April 30, 1910 and will die here in Chattanooga July 1, 1971. I don’t have Mamie’s last name yet, but she was born here in Chattanooga January 13, 1909 and will also die here May 13, 1984.

He is 29 TN and his wife Ruth 28 MO. James Robert Putman is a son of Jess and Dovie Putman here in town. He was born here March 23, 1911 and will die in Corinth, Mississippi in February 1977

 

CLARENCE PUTMAN  Waverly, Humphries County

He is 27 ND Single and lodging. He is a surveyor with the State Highway Department. He is a son of Lafayette Putman and Verdia Summers from Egeland, Towner County North Dakota. He was born there October 6, 1912 and will live in Bristol, Virginia. He will marry Helen Maurine Sutton back in Egeland June 28, 1941. Helen was born there in September 1915 and will die in Bristol July 5, 1989. Clarence will die in Centreville, Virginia August 21, 2000. Little tidbit here. The City of Bristol is half in Tennessee and half in Virginia where the Southern parts of the states meet. When I was a geology student at Yale, I was in that area of the Appalachians at a summer field course run by VPI in 1958. That was in the height of the bootleg days. We were in Saltville, Virginia and on Saturday nights the local moonshine guys parked their trucks all around the downtown area and sold the stuff by holding up bottles and saying how great the kinda clear brown stuff was.

 

FRED PUTNAM  Doe Township, Johnson County

He is 35 NC, his wife Elizabeth A. Arney is 31 TN and they have David 6 TN, a son A. G. 3 TN and Sally 8/12 TN. He is a laborer for the W.P.A. Found a family sheet that gave me Elizabeth’s name but didn’t have Fred’s folks. He says he was in Mitchell County in 1935. That’s in North Carolina. So looked in North Carolina with no luck BUT found him in Unicoi County Tennessee with his folks Augustus Merriman Putman and Julia Ann Miller who were from Mitchell County North Carolina and Fred was born there September 24, 1904 and will die here August 23, 1987.

 

OTHO A. (AZRO) PUTMAN  Fountain City, Knox County

He is 67 TN TN TN and a foreman on the Southern Railroad. Martha Tennessee ‘Tennie’ Dixon his wife is 63 TN. He is a son of William C. Putnam and Jessie Dodge from here. Been here all his life. He was born here October 13, 1872 and will die in a hospital in Knoxville November 8, 1949. His married daughter Iva 30 TN and husband Nathanial Riddick 33 TN are with them. Martha is widowed here by herself in 1950.

WALTER L. (LEE) PUTNAM  Knoxville, Knox County

He is 40 IL and his wife Beatrice 39 KY. He is a clerk in a drug store. They say they were here in 1935. He is Walter Junior, a son of Walter Lee Putnam and his first wife Martha Alice Adams and was born in Champaign, Champaign County Illinois in 1899. His dad remarried and they were in Cassopolis, Cass County Michigan in 1910. In 1920 this Walter was in the Army in Coblenz, Germany. He was married to Beatrice in Hazard, Perry County Kentucky in 1930. His dad was single again in Owensboro, Daviess County Kentucky, and married to Lillie there in 1935 and now in 1940. That would probably be where young Walt met Beatrice. His dad was a son of James and Jane Putnam and was born in 1877 in Vermillion County Indiana and was with them there in 1880. Family was from Vermont before that.

 

ADRIAN PUTNAM  Lawrenceburg, Lawrence County

He is 63 IA, and his wife Bertha Mary Phillips 60 MO. They work at the Lawrenceburg Sanitarium and Hospital. He is a superintendent and she a supervisor of women. In 1920 and 1930 they had similar jobs at the Madison Sanitarium in Davidson County. Adrian Eric Putnam is a son of James Rufus Putnam, and was born in Marion County Iowa and was at home in Pottawattamie County Iowa in 1900. They will move to North Carolina sometime, as he will die in Center Township, Chatham County in 1957 and Bertha in 1960. They are buried in Hank’s Chapel Cemetery in North Carolina. New England family way back when. They are in Chatham County North Carolina in 1950.

 

J. D. (JOHN DEE) PUTMAN  Lawrenceburg, Lawrence County

He is 44 AL, his wife Martha Cora Cole is 43 AL and they now have Miles Lincoln 18 AL, his twin sister Lillian E. 18 AL, Herbert S. 15 AL, Mary Sue 12 AL, a son John Carthal 9 AL, Dennis Resder 5 TN and J. Fred 4 TN. He is a sharecropper, in other words rents his farmland. He is Miles Richard Putman and Susan Jane Sledge's son and was born in Lexington, Lauderdale County Alabama September 30, 1894. The whole family was there in 1930 and here about 1933. Another of his sons, Leroy, is up here too. They are here in 1950.

 

LEROY PUTMAN  Lawrenceburg, Lawrence County

He is a sharecropper 22 AL. His wife Bessie Mae Barnett is 27 TN and they have Paul 1 TN. They were here in 1935. He is a son of John D. Putman and Marsha Cora Cole and was born in Lauderdale County Alabama January 16, 1918 and will die here in Lawrenceburg in April 1985. He married Bessie Mae Barnett October 14, 1936. She was born September 20, 1911 and will die in Lawrenceburg in November 1992. His folks and the rest of the family are up here now as well. They are all here in 1950.

 

TURNER LEE PUTMAN  St. Joseph, Lawrence County

He is 35 AL AL AL and has his own barbershop as he did here in 1930. Verdie Williams his wife is 30 TN and they have Edith 11 TN, Monetta 7 TN, Jimmy 3 TN and Daniel 9/12 TN. They were married here June 11, 1927. He is Turner Lee a son of Andrew Lee Putman and Cora Beulah Richardson from Lauderdale County Alabama. He was born there November 16, 1904 and will die here in January 1969.

 

WILLIAM D. PUTMAN  Westpoint, Lawrence County

He is 40 AL, his wife Bernice Colbert is 34 TN and they now have Elizabeth 18 AL, Effie Mae 14 AL, Jesse Thomas 12 AL, Oleal 9 AL, a son Marse or Manse or maybe Morris 6 AL and Bobbie Lee 3 TN. He is a son of Jesse Thomas Putman and Mary Elizabeth Mathews and was born in Green Hill, Lauderdale County Alabama and will die back there August 5, 1966. He married Bernice December 26, 1920. She was born December 2, 1906 and will die in Lauderdale County April 7, 1892. His dad Jesse is a son of Miles Richard Putman and Susan Jane Sledge from Lauderdale County and then the line goes back to South Carolina. They are in Colbert County Tennessee in 1950.

 

B. (BILLIE) P. PUTMAN  Rural District 3, Lawrence County

He is 44 NC, his wife Ida Estella Roach is 42 NC and they now have Margaret Lois 20 NC, Herman 18 NC, Elise 12 NC, Lucille 10 TN, and Christine 8 TN. Also here is a granddaughter Margaret Putman 1 TN. He is a son of James Alfred Putman and Margaret Jane Owens from Rutherford County North Carolina. James was a son of Thomas Y. Putman and Sarah Jane Robbins from there. They and his widowed mom were here in 1930. He owns his own farm.

 

GUS PUTMAN  Rural Malesus, Madison County

He is 66 TN a farmer, his wife Myrtle Monroe is 48 TN and their son Edward is 21 TN. Also here is her brother Hollis Monroe 33 TN. In 1920 there was a Henry Putman just widowed with a son Walter Edward 16 months old. The age and name fit perfectly. In Myrtle’s death certificate it stated her husband was Henry Putman. This guy is Gus Henry Putman based on Rand Putnam’s info and looks right to me too. Rand found his death record and it says his folks were Nelce Putman and Merry Gardner. Probably Nelson Putman, but no ideas as to who he is. They are here in 1950 though. He uses Henry and she Bertha as first names, but ages are perfect and is them.

 

FRANK V. (VARNER) PUTMAN  Cedar Springs, Marion County

He is 73 TN and his wife Mintie, Ariminta Elvira Childers his wife, 66 TN. They were in Bledsoe County then Sequatchie County in 1910 and here in 1920 and 1930 but say they were back in Bledsoe County in 1935. He is the son of Mary Putman from Bledsoe County and some unknown father.

 

ERNEST PUTMAN  Chapel Hill, Marshal County

He is a tenant farmer 36 AL, his wife Laura May Underwood 34 TN (AL), James 13 TN (AL), Marvin 11 TN (AL), Irvin 5 TN and Billy Allen 2 TN. He is a son of George Putman and Mary Spurlock from Madison County Alabama and then they were all in Sand Springs, Limestone County Alabama in 1930. They are still here in 1950.

 

JAMES M. (MADISON) PUTNAM  Connersville, Marshall County

He is 56 TN and his wife Mary Ethel Davis is 54 TN. Catherine 22 TN and Eugene Hendrix 18 TN are still at home. James is a Methodist Church Minister, and is a son of Miles Richard Putman and Susan Jane Sledge from Lauderdale County Alabama where he was born in November 1883. They were in Wayne County Tennessee in 1910, Giles County in 1920, Sumner County in 1935 and Smith County in 1930. He will die February 18, 1972.

 

GEORGE PUTNAM  Etowah, McMinn County

He is 42 GA and a still a mechanic for the railroad as he was in 1930. Chassie Lee Casteel his wife is 36 TN. They have been married a little over 14 years. George Thomas Putman is a son of John Robert Putman and Annie Swan from Gordon County Georgia. George was born October 18, 1897 and will die here October 1, 1990. Chassie was born September 6, 1902 and will die August 17, 1980 here in McMinn County.

 

T. (THOMAS) FRANK PUTMAN  Rural District 2, McNairy County

He is Thomas Franklin Putman, a son of John Franklin Putman and Martha Lain. Frank is 64 TN, his wife Gethie Smith 56, and two daughters Marie 28 TN and Frankie 22 TN. He has his own farm. He was born in McNairy County October 31, 1882 and will die here January 27, 1951. He married Gethie here June 22, 1906. She is a daughter of William Smith and was born in November 1882 and will die here September 20, 1951.

 

EDDIE B. (BAILEY) PUTNAM  Clarksville, Montgomery County

He is 43 KY and his wife Bessie K. 38 KY. He is a son of George W. Putman and Jennie Oldham and was born December 11, 1895 in Hopkins County Kentucky. He was in Detroit, Michigan in 1920 through 1935. He is now a tobacco grower. He will die here in Clarksville in November 1985.  

 

JAMES PUTNAM  Dayton, Rhea County

He is 24 TN and his wife Marie 25 TN. They were recently married as he was in Nashville in 1935 and she was in Crossville, Cumberland County in 1935. He is an electrician and sells or works on retail electric appliances. She owns a beauty Shoppe. Think his name is James Christie Putnam and he is a son of James Madison Putman and Mary Elizabeth Davis. James the dad is a traveling Methodist minister and was in Wayne County in 1910 and Giles County in 1920 and Smith County in 1930. He was a son of Miles Richard Putman and Susan Jane Sledge from Lauderdale County Alabama. Young James will die in Crossville, Cumberland County August 31, 2002.

 

ERVIN PUTMAN  Murfreesboro, Rutherford County

He is 57 TN, Bernice Jennings his wife 56 TN and they have Margaret 23 TN at home. Also here is a niece Elizabeth Jamison 18 TN. He operates a Cafe with Bernice and Margaret is a high school teacher. Ervin Thomas Putman is a son of John William Putman and Mary ‘Mollie’ Sanford from here. He was born February 12, 1883 and will die here April 2, 1951. Bernice was born March 7, 1884 and will die here in April 1974. They are here in 1950.

 

SANFORD PUTMAN  Murfreesboro, Rutherford County

He is 33 TN, his wife Mary 31 TN and they have Mary Jo 4 TN and James Ervin 1 TN. He is a manager in a printing company. He is a son of the above Ervin Putman and Bernice Jennings.

 

BILL PUTMAN  Rockvale, Rutherford County

He is 61 TN TN TN and is married to Fannie 33 TN. He is a laborer. This is James William Putman a son of John William Putman and Mary ‘’Mollie’ Sanford from here. He was born here February 16, 1879. He was in St. Louis, Missouri in 1920 and then back here in 1930. He will be here now till he dies January 10, 1959. He is buried in Murfreesboro along with his wife Fannie Y. She was born August 13, 1906 and died August 29, 1950.

 

CLAUDE PUTMAN  Memphis, Shelby County

He is a Negro 29 MS and his wife Mamie 34 MS with two kids from her first marriage with a Vaughn guy.

 

BOBBIE PUTMAN  Memphis, Shelby County

She is 7 TN and lives with her mother Katherine 26 TN and second husband Arthur Blurton 4 TN. No ideas on Bobbie’s daddy.

 

WILLIAM C. (CARMACK) PUTNAM  Memphis, Shelby County

He is 29 TN and his wife Margaret A. Prichett is 27 TN and they have William Allen 5 TN and Macqueline Anne 1 TN. He is a truck driver for a meat packing plant. They were in Dyer County in 1935, and will be in 1950. He is a son of Vernon Taylor Putman and Bertha Christine Wallsmith from Gibson County to Morgan County.  He was born in 1908 and will die in 1977.

 

GEORGE PUTNAM  Rural District 9, Sumner County

He is a farmer 23 TN and his wife Lona is also 23 TN. They say they were in Nashville, Davidson County in 1935. He would be the son of Alonzo Putman and Nettie Meadows from Nashville. His dad died there in 1929. This is a line out of Rutherford County North Carolina.

 

CLARENCE PUTNAM  Outside Covington, Tipton County

He is 26 AL and his wife Kathleen is 22 TN and they have Doris Marie 4 TN. He is a frame hand at a cotton mill. He looks to be the son of Samuel Putman and Annie Daly from Limestone County Alabama. He was home there in 1920 then Dyer County Tennessee in 1930. He will still be here in 1950.

 

LOUISE PUTNAM  Erwin, Unicoi County

She is 59 NC and now widowed. She is living with her now widowed daughter Florence Updyke 42 VA. She was here in 1930 as well and Florence was married to A. D. Updyke. Louisa Nowell was married to Milo Lee Putnam here in 1930. He was a son of Druary Alston Putman and Ella Cordellia Irby from Mitchell County North Carolina. 

 

SYLVIA PUTNAM  Rural District 3, Unicoi County

She is 32 TN, and has Viola 15 TN, Benjamin 14 TN, Pauline 12 TN, a son Shelor 9 TN, Evelyn 7 TN, Douglas 4 TN and Buford 2 TN. Sylvia McIntruff is married to James Webster Putnam. They were here in 1930. Webb is up in Michigan now and Julia and the kids will go up there in 1941. Webb will die there in 1967 and Sylvia in 1988.

 

GUS PUTNAM  Rural District 3, Unicoi County

He is now 75 NC and his wife Julia Ann Miller is 72 NC. Augustus Merriman Putman is a son of James Webster Putman and Martha Reed of Mitchell County North Carolina. Gus and Julia will move to Michigan in early August of 1941 and he will die there in Adrian, Michigan on August 16, 1941. Julia will come back here and die January 24, 1946.

 

W. J. (WILLIAM JABEL) PUTNAM  Nolensville, Williamson County

He is 83 TN TN TN and widowed as he was in 1920. He still operates his own grocery store. His son Howard Jabel is 52 TN, his wife Sallie Barnes 48 TN and their daughter Billie 22 TN. Howard probably now runs his dad’s grocery store. He is a son of David Vance Putman and Mary Ann Underwood. He was born February 22, 1957 and will die here in Williamson County January 26, 1942.

 

DAVID J. (JASON) PUTNAM  Rural District 19, Williamson County

He is 20 TN and his wife Louise Young is 21 TN. They live with her parents Sam and Hassie Young. He is a son of William David Putman and Clara Daisy Sanford from here. He was born here May 1, 1920. Folks have been up in Nashville where his mother died about 1922. David was with his father and new stepmother Maude Felts there in 1930. He will die in an automobile accident in Nashville September 22, 1950. He was an automobile mechanic there.
