VIRGINIA

Census Reports

1790 – 1900

===========

UPDATED FEBRUARY 18, 2024

The early census records of Virginia were destroyed and so the early reports are based on existing tax lists. By 1810, things are okay again.

In the 1790 census, tax records were used to reconstruct this census, which was destroyed by fire.

In the 1800 and 1810 census both males and females are broken into 0-9, 10- 15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over. 1800 was again a reconstructed census.

In the 1820 census males are broken down 0-9, 10-15, 16-18, 19-25, 26-44, 45 and older. Females are divided 0-9, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.

In the 1830 and 1840 census both males and females are listed 0-4, 5-9, 10- 14, 15-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, etc.

From 1850 on ages and states of birth are shown. In 1880 and on, places of birth are listed for the person, their father and their mother.

Although the Southern Putman line came from England to Virginia in 1647, most had spread south and west by or shortly after the Revolution. From 1800 up until the 1900s, there were basically two families that grew and spread out in the Northwestern and Western parts of Virginia.

John Putnam came from Massachusetts after serving in the Revolution. He settled in Bath County.  Bath County is in the middle of the State right on the West Virginia Border. Parts of the family spread out into neighboring Alleghany County and several moved west into West Virginia in the 1850s and 1860s. They settled in Doddridge and Ritchie Counties in the Northwestern part of the state.

The other English line was the Southern Putnam/Putman one that settled in Gloucester County Virginia and moved west. A couple of families passed through from the Carolinas into Kentucky and west, but the family of William Putnam and then Joseph Darnell Putnam settled in Fauquier County in the Northern Neck of Virginia. They later spread into Warren, Shenandoah and other Northern Counties and then by the 1860s into the middle of West Virginia in Gilmer, Braxton and a couple of other Counties.

Early on part of the German Putman family was in Hampshire County, which became part of West Virginia, but they moved to the Mid West by 1800. Later, other groups from the English families from New England and Dutch from New York came into the State.

VIRGINIA 1787-1790 TAX LISTS

DANIEL PUTMAN  Culpeper County

Daniel is a son of Zachariah (II) and Margaret Putman from here. He is found in the 1787 tax list and in the reconstructed 1790 Census. But he is actually in Abbeville County, South Carolina by the 1790 census, as he and Sarah are listed there. They were accepted into the Turkey Creek Baptist Church there on May 14, 1790. At any rate, Daniel was born here in Culpeper or possibly Middlesex County in about 1745. He married Sarah Kendrick here in about 1765, as their eldest child was born here in 1766. Daniel will be in South Carolina until he dies December 31, 1821, or at least that was the date it was recorded. Sarah died before that as she was not mentioned in his court petition. This line goes back Daniel > Zachariah > Zachariah > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas Putnam.

HENRY PUTMAN  Culpeper County

Another of Zach and Margaret's kids is also found in 1787 but for some reason is not listed in 1790 even though he was probably still in the area, I think. He moved to Mason County, Kentucky about 1793, though it may have been a little earlier. They are there for sure by 1798 when they are on the tax rolls. He was born here about 1747, and married Elizabeth Kendrick in the early 1770s. He served with his brother Daniel in the Virginia Militia during the Revolution. Henry will remain in Mason County until his death in 1825. His line is the same as his brother Daniel.

PETER PUTMAN  Hampshire County

Peter is German, probably a son of Philip Jacob Putman of Frederick County, Maryland. He is in a County that will later be included in West Virginia. He is in the 1787 tax list and in 1790. He has a family of twelve (ten children). He was born in Maryland January 12, 1740. He married Mary Good (Goode) who was born in Virginia May 14, 1775. Peter died August 11, 1795. Mary will be with her son Jacob on the farm and will die here November 16, 1815. Most of the rest of the kids will head out to Ross County, Ohio in the early 1800s. See the section on German Putmans and Peter Putman in the West Virginia Section.

PETER PUTMAN, JR.  Hampshire County

He is a son of the above Peter and Mary. His wife is Sophia. He is in the 1787 tax list but is included with his folks in 1790, as that census was based on the 1785 tax list. They will remain here, and in 1820 Sophia will be shown as a widow with her kids.

BENJAMIN PUTNAM  Norfolk County

He is in the 1785 tax list and is listed as being over 45 and alone in Portsmouth, Norfolk County, Virginia in the 1790 census. He is Benjamin Farley Putnam born in Danvers, Massachusetts August 26, 1851. He served as a surgeon in the Revolutionary War. After the War he settled in Savannah, Georgia before 1787 and he remained for the rest of his life. He received a land grant in Chatham County in 1805. He married Ann Sophia Malcolm originally from Washington D.C. She received a widow's land grand in the 1820 lottery along with the kids. He died sometime around 1807-8. Benjamin is listed as number 414 in Eben Putnam's works. This New England line goes back Benjamin (414) > Henry (160) > Eleazer (31) > John (8) > John Putnam (1).

VIRGINIA 1800 CENSUS

In the 1800 and 1810 census both males and females are broken into 0-9, 10- 15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over. 1800 was again a reconstructed census.

JOHN PUTNAM  Accomack County

He is on the Eastern Shore in St. George's Parish. He and his wife are both over 45 and they have one son in the 16-26 age group. This is the only time he is listed. I haven't the foggiest idea who he could be. It is possible that he was the father of Jeremiah Putnam who was born in Virginia and then went to Guilford County, North Carolina where he was a member of the Quaker Church. Jeremiah was born in about 1785 so the child ties right in. John, himself, is possibly the man who came to Philadelphia from England and signed the Oath on September 29, 1753. Who knows?

JOSEPH D. (DARNELL) PUTNAM  Fauquier County

Taken from the 1800 tax list, he is listed as 1 tithable and owns 3 horses. He is Joseph Darnell Putnam, the only son of William Putnam II and Catherine Darnell. His dad died in the Revolution in Virginia about 1777, his mom remarried to John McNeil about 1780. Joseph was born about 1761, he married Sarah Ball here about 1791 or so. They will be here through the 1850 census where he is 88 and she is 81. This line is Southern and the only one to consistently use the original Putnam spelling. The lineage is Joseph > William > William > Thomas > Thomas > Thomas Putnam.

VIRGINIA 1810 CENSUS

In the 1800 and 1810 census both males and females are broken into 0-9, 10- 15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.

JOHN PUTNAM  Bath County

Listing is 11001  31001. He is from Massachusetts, and served in the revolution in New York and then Southern Pennsylvania. He lived in Lancaster County for some six years after the Revolution and then moved to Virginia and married Mary ‘Polly’ Graves in Berkley County September 6, 1790. They moved to the Stewart Creek area of Bath County in the late 1790s. They will be here all their lives. He and his wife, Mary Graves, are both over 45. Listing is 11001 31001. According to Eben Putnam, His name is actually Jeptha John Putnam named after his grandfather. But he initially entered the Army as Jeptha Putnam. At any rate he was born in Sutton, Massachusetts on September 24, 1762. He will die here in Bath April 14, 1837. This line goes back Jeptha (992) > Fuller (391) > Jeptha (158) > Eleazer (31) > John (8) > John Putnam (1).

JOSEPH D. (DARNELL) PUTNAM  Fauquier County

His family is growing. He is over 45 and Sarah Ball under 45. The family listing is 30201 02010. He is the only son of William Putnam II and Catherine Darnell. His dad died in the Revolution in Virginia about 1777, his mom remarried to John McNeil about 1780. Joseph was born about 1761, he married Sarah Ball here about 1791 or so. They will be here through the 1850 census where he is 88 and she is 81. This line is Southern Putman and the only one to consistently use the original Putnam spelling.

ZACHARIAH PITMAN  Fauquier County

Listing is 32001 01010. The spelling is Pitman. He might be a Putman, but don’t think so. The only Zachariah Putman that could be around is Daniel Putman’s son from South Carolina, but he and Winnie have been in Kentucky for about 15 years now. Probably not a Putman, and the Pitman spelling may be correct. I’m listing him just in case.

JACOB PUTMAN  Hampshire County

Jacob is Peter Putman and Mary Goode's eldest son. He is 26-45 and there are two women with him, his wife Rachel Adams must be the one 16-26 and then there is an older woman over 45 who is his mother Mary Goode Putman. His dad died recently and he has taken over the family farm. Listing 00010 00101. Jacob was born here January 12, 1759 and Rachel on May 8, 1776. He will die and is Will proven on August 24, 1835. Rachel will marry Charles Cresap and they are here in 1850. By 1860, Rachel was widowed again and in Washington County, Iowa with her son Jacob Junior. Remember this is a German line.

PETER PUTMAN  Hampshire County

Peter (junior) and his wife Sophia are over 45 with 3 of their kids still at home with the folks. The listing is 11001 01001. His dad has died and he too will die here in the next few years. Sophia will be widowed here in 1820 with one son, and then that’s the last I hear of them.

EMESTUS PUTMAN  Jefferson County

This is Ernestus Putman, son of Arent Putman and Elizabeth DeSpitzer of Schenectady, New York. He was born there October 27, 1776. He is of the Dutch line started by Jan Poutman in New York State. Jefferson County is currently in West Virginia. He married Nancy Becker back in Schenectady, New York April 1, 1797. She died there June 8, 1812. He headed south and married Elizabeth Gray in Shepardstown, Virginia (now in West Virginia) March 24, 1814. They are now both in the 26-45 age group and they have two other males in the same age group. One might be his brother who joined him in Ohio. Not sure here. Listing is 00030 10010. Ernestus will continue out into Ohio and be in Darke County by 1820. He will be there through 1850, and then go with his son Ernestus to Winchester, Randolph County, Indiana in the late 1850s, and die there February 15, 1864. Elizabeth died the following year. This Dutch line goes back Ernestus > Arent (Aaron) Johannes > Johannes (John) > Arent Janse > Johannes Poutman.

JOHN PUTMAN  Kanawha County

Kanawha County is also now in West Virginia. He should be a son of John Putman (Zachariah's son), who stopped and settled in West Virginia when the family was heading west into Kentucky. John married Mary Long in Botetort County, Virginia and this John's neighbors in Kanawha County include several Long families. He and his wife are 26-45 with 3 children. Listing is 10010 11010. I do not find any Putmans in this county again until the 1860s when it officially became West Virginia as the Civil War broke out.  Southern Putman line.

VIRGINIA 1820 CENSUS

In the 1820 census males are broken down 0-9, 10-15, 16-18, 19-25, 26-44, 45 and older. Females are divided 0-9, 10-15, 16-25, 26-44, 45 and over.

FULLER PUTNAM  Bath County

He is listed next to his parents John Putnam and Mary Graves above. His listing is 100100 20110. He is now 25, and Sarah is 26. He was born in 1794-95. He and Sarah are here through 1860 and then died in that decade I guess. The son is John, daughters are Nancy and Mary.

JOSEPH PUTNAM  Fauquier County

By 1860, Rachel was widowed again and in Washington County, Iowa with her son Jacob Junior. German Putman line from Maryland.

WILLIAM PUTMAN  Loudon County

He is alone between 26 and 44. I have no real idea on this guy. There is a note that he is a foreigner not naturalized yet(?). Best bet is this is a dual listing for the William in neighboring Prince William County. The age is right and he may just be here on business or something.

ISAAC PUTNAM  Ohio County

Isaac is from Vermont and living near Wheeling, West Virginia. His listing is 01001 00101. He is Isaac Putnam junior, a son of Isaac Putnam (628) and Polly Chamberlain. He also appears in the 1820 Census of Jefferson County, Ohio, which is just across the river. He married Mary Ann Brawley on March 18, 1817. He will next go to Champaign County, Ohio. Just as a bit of interest, he last turns up in the 1900 Census of Kentucky at age 100 (Born in October 1799). He is in the Logan County, Kentucky, Alms House. Way to go Isaac!!

WILLIAM PUTNAM  Prince William County

He is a son of Joseph Darnell Putnam and Sarah Ball. He was born in Fauquier County about 1793, and he married Pency Gill in 1817. They have two young sons. Listing is 20010 00000, but it is an error as Pency was alive and well at the time. The sons are Joseph William and William Robert. They will be in Warren County soon. They are not indexed in 1830, but Pency will be widowed there in 1840. Southern Putman family.

She will be there in 1920 at age 92.

This is the area Jeremiah Putnam came from before he headed to Guilford County in North Carolina. Perhaps she is a widow of one of his brothers, or just not a Putman at all. Jacob will die in July of 1894 and Mary Ellen in March of 1883. More can be found on this family in the section on IOWA PUTMANS. Then, of interest. Sarah is 33 VA and the children are Julia A. 13 VA, Eli 12 VA, Charles 10 VA, Joseph 8 VA, and Elizabeth 4 VA. ELI PUTMAN  Alleghany County

He is listed as 28 VA and his wife Nancy Griffith, another daughter of Orlando and Lucy Griffith, is 24 VA. Something wrong here as Eli was born in the 1822-1823 time period and should be about 38 and Nancy or Nannie about the same. To make things more confusing, there is also an Eli still shown in Fuller's family roughly the same age. Anyway, Eli and Nancy have Orlando J. 5 VA and John W. 3 VA. Elias Putnam is a son of Fuller and Sarah Putnam from Bath County. They both will die or disappear by 1870.

MARTHA PUTMAN  Alleghany County

She is John and Mary’s daughter age 50 VA. She is living with the family of Thomas Ross (Sr.) who had married her sister Eunice. They were all in Bath County in 1850. Eunice is not in the 1860 census and must have died. Martha will be with the Rosses through 1880. She never married.

The ages are way off from the 1850 plus 10 years. Peggy, shown as Margaret in 1870, never appeared in 1850. Possibly Albert married Peggy. At any rate, we never again hear of Albert Franklin. Eli for some reason has two listings, as he seems to be the one included here. Fuller and Sarah will have died by 1870. New England line.

JOSEPH PUTMAN  Brandywine, Fauquier County

He is now 63 VA and a widower for the second time. At home are Lucy Ann 42 VA, Kitty 26 VA, Noah R. 25 VA (35), Mary Elizabeth 20 VA and Richard 14 VA. NOAH R. PUTMAN  Orlean, Fauquier County

Another of Joseph Putnam and Mary Gill's sons. He is a miller age 32 VA and unmarried. This was taken in August. He is also listed at home in a census taken there in July. Age should be 35 in both cases.

Also with her is her widowed dad, James Gill, age 66 VA. Now, as to the two younger kids. Martin died back in the 1845, and Elizabeth was widowed here in 1850. Rumor and court cases have it that she had an affair with a neighbor, John A. Jackson, and had all the children except Martha with him.

Sarah 17 VA and Mary 15 VA are two more of Bartemous Putman's orphaned kids who died here in 1859. Sarah is living with D. E. and M. J. Maholm family, Mary with William and Lucretia Wooden. Not certain of the connections here, probably good friends.

MARTHA A. PUTMAN  Waterloo, Fauquier County

She is a daughter of Bartemous Putnam and Frances Dulin. Bartemous died in 1859 and Frances must also have died in the mid 1850s as their kids are spread out with several families (see more listings coming up). Martha is shown as 21 VA, Charles 12 VA, Lucy Ann 10 VA and Frances A. (Amanda) 7 VA. They are all Bartemous and Frances Putnam’s kids, and are living with their grandmother Charlotte Dulin 71 VA.

PUTNAMS & PUTMANS  Gilmer County

These are all part of the family of John Putnam and Sophia Creel originally from Fauquier County. Gilmer County will become part of the State of West Virginia when it is formed in 1863. From 1870 on see the West Virginia Censuses to keep track of these folks. They were all farmers. This is a part of the Southern Putman Line.

JOHN PUTNAM  Cox’s mills, Gilmer County

He is 58 VA, and his wife Sophia Creel 50 VA. At home are Maryann 32 VA, Pency 21 VA, Sarah 28 VA, Sophia A.19 VA, Joseph B. 17 VA, John 14 VA, and Amanda F. 10 VA. Sophia was born in Fauquier County on November 2, 1807. It was this family that traveled into Gilmer County in the mid 1840s with the exception of the eldest child, Levi, who remained in the area and took over the original family farm. John died in Gilmer County on December 12, 1862 and Sophia died there on March 3, 1865. It was by then West Virginia. The northern Virginia Colonies had refused to join the Confederate States of America, and West Virginia became a state. This is most likely why they moved this way in the first place. They are both buried in Baldwin, West Virginia.

JAMES PUTMAN  Cox’s Mills, Gilmer County

John and Sophie's son is 31 VA, Lydia E. Cox is 32 VA and they have John Joseph 4 VA and Albert J. 1 VA. He was born in 1830. He was married three times. SAMUEL PUTMAN  Glenville, Gilmer County

More of John's family. He is 22 VA, and his wife Mariah E. Ratcliffe is 17 born in Lewis Co. VA. With them is a Nancy Woods 5 months old. I have no idea how Nancy fits in here. She was a daughter of William Ratliff and Lucretia Wallace. Samuel died in Gilmer County on January 11, 1869. Mariah and the kids were in Pike County, Missouri in the 1880 census. George and Ellis are sons of Peter Putman Junior and Margaret Saunders from Livingston County, New York. They were all there in 1850. They will all return soon to New York. VIRGINIA 1870 CENSUS

SARAH PUTNAM  Clifton, Alleghany County

John's widow is still here at age 43 VA now. Eli (William Eli) is 22 VA, Charles F. 20 VA, Joseph 18 VA, Elizabeth R. 15 VA. Also still there is her sister in law Nancy Putman now age 65 VA. Then there is a John Putman age 14 VA who I think is a son of Eli who has died.

NANCY PUTNAM  Williamsville, Bath County

This listing is some confusion. First we get three unmarried sisters, all daughters of Fuller and Sarah. Nancy is 57 VA, Rachel is 50 VA and Betsy (Elizabeth) is 47 VA. Margaret is 24 VA. Then in the next house, or at least family unit, we get Elizabeth's son (out of wedlock) Charles Francisco Putman age 20 VA and his brand new wife Agnes K. Rowe age 23 VA. There is also Alexander Putman age 21 VA who is the second of Betsy's two sons. Margaret Ross Putnam is the wife of Samuel Putnam, Fuller’s son. She will be single with four kids in Doddridge County, West Virginia in 1880. Then there is Emma Putman listed as being 4 years old born in West Virginia who is Sam and Margaret’s daughter. Fuller's family was a form of hippie commune back in those days, a large and confusing extended family of sorts. But heck, that family was from Sutton, Massachusetts where all the Putnams intermarried and intermarried.

MARTHA PUTMAN  Millboro, Bath County

She is still living with Thomas Ross Junior and his wife Mary Putnam Ross and family and is now 60 years old. She is John and Mary Putnam’s daughter who never married.

ORLANDO J. (JORDAN) PUTMAN  Millboro, Bath County

Eli's son is now also living with the Thomas and Mary Ross brood. His folks died a few years ago. He is now 17 years old. He will be marrying Mary Ann Ross, who is here and a daughter of Thomas Ross and Mary Putnam, here on December 3, 1874. A tad more ‘incest’ of sorts. First Cousins. Also to add more spice, Thomas Ross’s mother was Eunice Putnam who was a daughter of John and Mary Putnam from Bath County.

MARSH PUTNAM  Manchester, Chesterfield County

He is 21 PA. He is a brakeman on the railroad and is boarding with a bunch of others. In the 1850 there was a Marshall P. Mann age 11 in Chester County Pennsylvania. I’ll bet this is who this guy is. He isn’t a Putnam or Putman as far as I can figure.

DRUIT PUTNAM  Fort Monroe, Elizabeth City County

He is a soldier 30 NY. Name is De Witt, fairly common name for New York folks. Here he is in 1870 CA: DEWITT C. PUTMAN  Petaluma Township, Sonoma County.  DeWitt Clinton Putnam is listed as 40 NY, a wagon maker.  His wife, Rebecca Ann Townsend, is 30 MD.  The children are: Charles 10 IL, and George 2 CA. He first appears in Palmyra in 1850 single age 20 living with Alvesta P. Crandall. There is a birth record that Stephen Putnam and his wife Dorcas Smith from Connecticut had a son DeWitt born March 31, 1830. They both died here in the early 1830s so he was raised by some else.

VIOLA PUTNAM  Providence, Fairfax County

She is 23 NY and has a son Augustus C. Putnam 4 VA with her. She is with her parents M. A. and M. A. Commins also from New York. She and her folks were here in Fairfax County in 1860 as well. She was 13 NY and single of course then. She married John Wesley Putnam from Livingston County, New York in the 1864-65 range. He may have been here in the Union Army as that was the time the Civil War was over. Or more likely, his two older brothers George and Ellis Putnam were in Virginia in 1860 working on the railroad in Mecklenburg County. He may have come down to also work on the railroad after the War. John Wesley was a son of Peter Putman and Margaret Saunders from Livingston County, New York. Dutch family. Augustus will be here with his grandparents in 1880 and then be married to Nellie McCreery in Arlington, Alexandria County in 1900 through 1920 and widowed there in 1930 and longer. John Wesley seems to have a new wife Anna by 1875 back inBroome County New York. Dutch folks.

He will marry Mary Ann Saunders April 20, 1881 and they are in Fairfax County in 1900.

He runs a boarding house over the Theater I guess as there are also a bunch of actors and actresses and musicians living here. He married Ellen in Troy, New York on September 1, 1852. They were in Syracuse, New York in the 1860. He was a policeman then. He is a son of David Putman and Ann Vrooman from Montgomery then Onondaga County New York. Dutch family. They will be here in 1900 and he will be the Burlesque Theatre Manager by then. There was this interesting article. The Theater started out in 1852 as a Presbyterian Church and then converted to a bar and theater in the 1870s. It started in 1828 as the First Presbyterian Church on the north side of Franklin above 14th Street. This haven of saints became a harbor for other activities in 1853, when the congregation moved to a new building at 10th and Capitol streets. The large four-story structure with a full basement was re-christened as the Metropolitan Theater and later as the more exotic-sounding Theatre Comique. It was a busy venue that hosted lectures, theater productions and even political conventions. The Metropolitan was ideally situated in the thriving hotel and boardinghouse district on East Franklin, south of Capitol Square, between Governor and 14th streets. Nearby were the well-known Exchange and Ballard hotels. A portion of the site is occupied today by the former B.T. Crump building, now part of a recent renovation effort transforming it into apartments and retail space under the name Shockoe Commons on Main Street Apartment Homes. Kathryn Fuller-Seely, in her Celebrate Richmond Theater, quotes an 1870 advertisement for the Metropolitan. The text emphasizes getting women in to attract men, and the social tenor of the time. This broadside is reminiscent of a shouting corner barker: “Metropolitan/Theatre Comique Now Open For the Season. Houses Packed. Ladies Delighted. ... The Company pronounced to be the best ever In this city. A tremendous Saturday Night Bill. Miss Eloise Clyde, by special request, will sing ‘Wearing of The Gray.’ Miss Belle Graham in new songs and dances. Johnny Brasset in new Negro acts, songs and dances. The performance to conclude with the great moral drama Of Jack Sheppard, introducing a thrilling and startling Hanging scene, a warning to all — an example to none.” The Theatre Comique converted the church’s basement into a barroom. Former Sunday-school rooms became dressing areas for dancing girls, baggy-pants comics and liquor-cask storage. Architectural historian Mary Wingfield Scott sniffed that it was a “questionable variety house.” For a short time, it was managed by Capt. W.W. Putnam, a New York-born boat builder. The old church-turned-joint was demolished in 1882. Putnam wasn’t new to town. He arrived prior to the Civil War and opened “a grog shop” in Rocketts dockyards (near where the Annabel Lee used to anchor). Two of his boats were blown up in the river during the Evacuation Fire of April 1865. The occupation government offered him a compensation patronage job as a captain in the Richmond police force. He was dismissed in 1870 when the federal occupation government ended, but Putnam stayed in town. On the second floor of 923 E. Broad St., he opened a theater he dubbed The Lyric. Five years later he moved into the worn Theatre Comique. By 1879, he’d moved the operation to 1311-13 E. Franklin St. and named it Putnam’s Theater. The site is partly occupied today by the Jefferson state office building. Putnam’s place rollicked as a burlesque house more in the style of vaudeville comics and leggy dancers than the striptease later associated with the term. Putnam hired more actors and acquired a pit orchestra directed by pianist Charles Neisz “from Nevada.” It was a Damon Runyon sort of place, where at all hours cops, cardsharps, novelty performers, journalists — and a few stray politicians — drifted in and out. Memoirist George Rogers noted in the Richmond News Leader in 1956 that the bevy of Putnam girls “solicited business for the bar operated by Putnam on the corner of Governor and Franklin … where drinks were served by white waiters.” By 1900, Putnam’s Theater was in Richmond’s unofficial but actual red-light district. Gambling houses, saloons and brothels crowded the narrow streets and alleys east of Capitol Square into Shockoe Valley. Putnam died in 1905. The place was renamed the Theatre Comique, then briefly, perhaps to recapture old glory, The Lyric. Widow Ellen Putnam, her son Fred, manager Abo Smith and leading man John West ran the business. By then, concerned citizens urged action against the proliferation of vice. Rogers wrote, “The city in 1908 suggested that the venture be discontinued by refusing it a license.”
